Read one chapter a week, only one short essay at the end, and 10 reading quizzes. Not difficult to pass, but will need to take readings seriously for an A or B.
Prof. Lee wrote me a personal email to say that I should have an A+ in this class and that I should be proud of my accomplishment. That was pretty awesome. You'll have to work for an A, but there are clear instructions. The journal write-ups are about your arguments, and he does not have to agree with you, as long as you are thoughtful. Recommend!
Lecture vids were no more than three minutes, are outdated, and irrelevant in guiding us through lessons (at the least he summarizes the topic). As the pandemic is out of anyone's control, I wish Lee would veer away from discouraging students in their abilities in succeeding in online learning. Class is designed for avid readers and $$ for books
I had no issues with Lee and his class. Textbook is available for free through library. Reading & lecture quizzes are easy. Chapters are short. Personally, one of the best history courses I have taken. I'm a history major.
He let me redo the final because I had computer issues. Short 1 page journals due weekly. 5 question reading quizzes. 50 questions final exam. 2 page final essay. All writing is open ended. Gives us room to make an argument. Make sure you have the textbook. He wrote it... and it covered all important topics for the class.
Not sure this is an English class or Asian studies. He'll grade you for sentence structure, thesis, etc. Weekly you'll have to do -Read 2 chapters from his book. -1 chapter from him and his friend's book. -Some youtube clips. -5 questions quiz. -Discussion 300 words or more. 5 replies to your classmate -Journal 700 words with 3 MLA citations
Discouraging students or encouraging student to learn in the field. Ready for the comment such "Read the instructions" "You don't read" "Wrong" "Can't recycle materials from the discussion forum"
The worst professor I have had yet. Even if you comply to his guideline, it's never enough because he's so vague and knocks irrational points off. The professor requires that we purchase His textbooks in order to pass. (TWO)
boring class. too many papers.
Before I took his class, I saw these reviews, and I believed this is an easy class. However, I found out that it's a joke. Every week 1 page single-space journal, 1 quiz which you can never review. Read A LOT, 50 pages on average per week and videos. 60% of 500 points to pass the class. Final is an essay in 1 week and 100 questions in 2 hour.
I'm here to confirm that all of the negative reviews were true. On top of that, he also forced students to email "professionally" as well. If you don't, you're in trouble. For example, you can't start your email by asking your question. You have to start with "Hello Professor Lee," and then end the email with "Your student, (name)." Ridiculous!
I came to rate him and god i m glad i m not the only one. I understand this is school and you have to try hard to succeed. But this teacher grades ridiculously harsh like he hates PEOPLE or something. Dont take him
I had the worst semester ever in my entire college experience, never met anyone like him. Other comments are true. He is rude in emails too. I know couple people in that class that received 5/100 and 34/100 for final essays , points are heavily knock off for lack of thesis and missing in text citations. Respectively, i think he needs to do better.
Came here after the reddit post about him. Took his class for credit and wanted to kill myself everyday. He is a little rude too t. I am a junior majoring in English; creative writing. Still can't figure out how I got 15/100 in essay paper.
Really wanted to like him but he was awful. This is my second class with Lee. Took his class before it was alright and I took another with him this semester it was the worst. Other reviews are true. Not sure why he changed
His class will take the lions share of your study time. Only take if you're passionate about the course material and comfortable with constant reading/writing. Barely teaches. 95% of the learning is through A LOT of assigned reading, 100+ pages a week. Very defensive. His quizzes are tough - timed and won't even let you see what you got wrong.
Quizzes are once a week and you only get 10 min to take it. If you get one question wrong you get docked 20%. Essay was 100 points and hes a tough grader. Final was 200 points and you get 2 hours, a lot of trick questions. He gave us extra credit at the end of the semester and it was to donate to his go fund me. I wouldnt take this class again
Prof should re-evaluate why he is teaching and what is the definition of the teacher. tbh you are not more than an F type of Prof with zero inspiration. You recorded your lecture back in the 2000s and audio quality is absolute trash and you make us buy your book with more than $100. I see zero effort from your side but demand our effort?
Professor Lee does not seem to care too much about the course. He gives no effort for this course. there are 10 journals and 10 quizzes with a 2 part final. Journals are easy enough if directions are followed I received perfect scores on all of them, quizzes are full and boring, questions are randomly selected from 100+ questions with 2 attempts..
Honestly one of the worst professors ever. He gives you quizzes which are only one attempt. And he gives you a final that has 100 random questions, and he doesn't prepare you for them at all. By all means if you want an easy F take this class.
final exam is 100 questions from a pool of 500. Tough grader on the written exam which he does not prepare one for. I received a grade of 12/100 which coming from a teacher who also struggles to actually teach anything is quite hilarious in and of itself.
The topics I learned in class were very interesting. I had fun learning more about history that I had not previously known about. What wasn't fun though, was the fact that I don't understand what he looks for in assignments/papers. It's like he expects expert-level responses for everything? For those looking for credit: He's not the one.
The subject itself is interesting, but the prof could definitely improve on his way of teaching and grading. This class is heavily based on HIS OWN book, & there's a journal & quizzes due every week. During finals, he does not provide a clear guideline or study guide on a test that covers the WHOLE class. If you hate yourself, take this class.
The bad reviews are true. The formatting of his online class is easy enough to follow, but his material is outdated and his grading is ridiculous. Unclear on what he wants from papers. I have never had a professor that could care less about the subject and their students. Skip this, you will not learn a thing.
I took this class in winter session. He was very flexible with due dates and made the class low stress. I appreciated it because I had to work. He is thoughtful of students' needs.
The worst professor I have come across in my academic career. Professor Lee should resign if he cares so little about the subject matter he "teaches." Outdated video lectures, outdated material, and out-of-touch from academia. Please do not take this course. Very irrational grading.
I had a difficult semester and Prof. Lee was very flexible with me on due dates and allowed me to submit all my assignments late. I didn't have to drop the course and ended up getting a solid A in this course. You must read and will have to be thoughtful in your weekly writing, but it is not hard. He provides clear instructions and a grade scale.
This class is organized and he sends out weekly reminders which helped me keep on tasks. He's fast to reply to emails. He provides a lot of instructions for the assignments. Textbooks are required for sure. I recommend his class if you are working full time and need flexibility. He's understanding and flexible on late work.
30% out of 100 to pass. It is an easy pass. I recommend taking for Credit No Credit. Totally easy to pass.
No complaints at all. Terrific online class.
he grades on a big curve and makes you work for an A grade, but getting a C is very easy. get the book, you'll need it if you are serious about working for an A. The class is organized, and the instructions for assignments are very detailed.
I'm an AAS major and I have taken 4 classes with Dr. Lee. I got an A in all of them. There are a lot of short 1 page papers and a lot of extra credit. His assignments are not hard, but def need the textbooks to do them well. I recommend his courses to anyone.
Best professor at SFSU. He helped me get into EOP and medical school.
Took an all online class. Be prepared to read. If you don't read, you will simply won't learn anything in the class and will struggle to do the weekly quizzes and journal entries. Grading structure is very easy to follow but the class overall needs improvement.
Prof. Lee is probably one of the worst Asian American Study professor I ever took, really hard grader and really anal about the amount of work you put in. Still will make you feel like you're doing something wrong and won't help correct. Grading material is weird btw.
Worst professor I ever taken, get ready to read and it's a lot of chapters also including lectures. Get ready to write a lot too. Not really helpful at all and not really caring. Good luck to everyone, he's made to make people fail and it doesn't matter amount of the work you put in.
By far the worst Professor I have taken. Tons of reading. Weekly assignments. VERY tough grader. Quizzes are atrocious, 5-10 questions randomly selected from a list of 20 early in the Semester, later turned to 50. Does not give feedback. Not helpful during office hours. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR OR YOU WILL REGRET IT!
There is three more weeks to the semester and I just found out I have enough points to skip the final exam. I can use the remaining three weeks to focus on my major classes. This class was great and the professor is flexible with deadlines. He was understanding and allowed me to submit late work each time I asked. The final grade scale is curved.
IMO, Professor Lee is kind and understanding. He helped me a lot this semester and accommodated all my needs. I highly recommend this course.
Best online class designed and easy A course if you read and do your work.
I just found out I do need to take the final exam for this course because I already passed with a C- for Credit. Best easy pass class I have taken. Do your weekly quizzes and journals, and you'll easily pass. I'm taking another one of Mr. Lee's classes next semester. I hope it is the same structure and style.
25% is a C-. Easy pass. Take it for Credit.
Fully online remote class that was flexible. The class was interesting and had great learning material!
This is the best online course I have taken. Mr. Lee is organized and the class is well curated with interesting topics. I highly recommend this class.
Lots of reading, you will have to spend at least 3-4 hours each week on reading. The readings are not hard to comprehend, it just takes time. Also gives short videos to watch. 10 question quiz and discussion each week, pretty simple. Quizzes aren't that difficult as long as you actually read the assigned chapters. Given two attempts per quiz.
Unrealistic expectations for the amount of reading he assigns. 1 discussion post per week and expects you to respond to 5 posts. Gives no points for that, so why bother? Weekly quizzes and paper. Very tough grader, throws out zeros even if you tried. I have 90 college credits and have never had so much reading in a class. Absolutely ridiculous.
Weekly discussions which equates to no points. Essays were not graded fairly. And a lot of readings.
I have no complaints about this class or this instructor. I took it for Credit and did not do the final exam because I had enough points to pass with Credit from the weekly quizzes and journals. I highly recommend this class. I'm taking another class with this instructor in spring.
He's very persistent, which I like because every reading/video he had was on point and how he set it up was clean and easy to find. This class was relaxed and had a flexible pace.
The professor did a great job at adding videos and readings that tied in greatly with the topic we learned about in class. The quizzes were also straight to the point and the questions were pulled from the readings which made this process quick and effective.
He is very knowledgeable in all the topics we covered. His book was very well-researched and provided tons of information. From the beginning, the instructor was very clear about the course and how it was structured. The course is consistent each unit/week and the professor provided a detailed email each week regarding the timeline for each.
Without this class, I would not have had access to and been encouraged to read and watch all of this informational content. I would still be living my life with little knowledge of the Asian American experience. This course gave me the information I needed to understand what Asian Americans have experienced.
There is weekly homework. Just follow the assignment instructions and you'll do well. There are no surprises, the unit quizzes were all based on readings. I liked how structured this class was. It helped me stay on top of the assignments. The professor is also relaxed with late work. It gave me time to do my engineering senior project.
This class is not easy, but it is also not hard. There's a big curved on the final grade, so easy to get an A. You'll for sure have to read and follow the instructions on the assignments that includes rubrics on what he's looking for. Just do that and you will be good. I'd take his classes again.
Doesn't really give good feedback and you will have to participate in a non-graded weekly discussion ( 1 post and 5 comments).
This course involves a Journal, Quiz, and Discussion, with extensive reading every week. The professor is a harsh grader, offering no feedback, making improvement impossible. I genuinely have no idea why he has such a high score here, this professor is a nightmare. Consider alternatives; this class isn't worth the tears.
Take this class at your own risk. Mr. Lee is a lousy grader that provides quite literally 0 feedback to assignments that have no rubric to work off of. An example assignment may be provided, however, in my experience, I provided all that I deemed necessary (coherent beginning, body, conclusion, and works cited) and still received zeroes. Plural.
Prof. Lee's expertise is evident, but limited feedback on weekly journals and infrequent email responses pose challenges. Thoroughly understand journal requirements from the syllabus to avoid significant point deductions. Improved feedback and communication would enhance the learning experience.
Avoid this professor. - Terrible at communicating through email (only possible form of communication with them) - Grades harshly and provides little to no feedback on what exactly was wrong - Assigns copious amount of reading from their own textbooks (you must purchase 2 textbooks they "wrote") + many more in which I can't fit into this review.
This instructor was not helpful, and his grading is odd. His notes on assignments are lazy at best. For class we had to read very explicit pornography with no warnings about the content . He also set up extra credit in the class for the SFSU self evaluations . This class was a waste of money and I believe he needs to revaluate his career choice.
His grading system is unfair, you get no points for the weekly discussions, firm and terrible grader. Save yourselves from this professor. This class with him is not worth taking at all.
professional gives me a hand clear explanation replies to messages as fast as he could he also invited us to share our ideas every week to discuss our opinions etc. many other reasons why you should absolutely take Prof. Lee's courses
I took him online so idk how he is in person. This course requires 3-4 hours of reading each week. There is a pop quiz. Journal entries that require you to respond to 5 other people which is just ridiculous. This class is meant to be difficult. If you're not a good writer/reader I would avoid this course.
This professor starts with a good communication. But when it came to the final exam, everything became very complicated and difficult to understand. Especially for the final essay, as long as there is a slight deviation from what he thinks, the score of the entire section will be lost. So those who take his class wish themselves well.
the work given wasn't that hard; if anything, it felt repetitive. Every week there was a quiz and paper due. For the quizzes, there were two tries per week, but couldn't learn much of what my mistakes were since the answers would always be muted. The books required for this class were pricey. If you needed clarity, his email responses were vague.
I took this class during winter session so it was accelerated. The workload was okay but there was just so much reading. If you're taking this class in winter or summer prepare to spend 4-5 hours reading each day. There's a quiz after each reading and you get two attempts at each quiz. His textbooks are well written and highly informational.
Really bad professor, does not understand that students have other classes. 1 page no spaced journal is assigned once a week, along with a quiz, and discussion. Too much reading! He needs a reality check. Lectures are outdated. No effort.
Lectures are outdated and assigns an unrealistic amount of readings each week. Feedback and notes aren't helpful, and the quiz content isn't even about the assigned readings, but formation of the textbook. Lee seems out of touch with college students not meeting you where you're at. It's required to spend $60+ on his textbooks which are vital.
I suggest to find another class that can fufill whatever credit you need. Quizzes are based on the text and not the content ("How many endnotes is in XYZ?") or vague questions that can have any answer. Discussions are not graded and 1-page papers per week can be graded pretty harshly/discouraging. Readings are around 3-5 texts per week + videos.
I took this class to fulfill an upper division general ed class. Don't take this class if you're looking to just pass and get credit. A ton of reading / videos each week takes up more time compared to any of my other courses (mind you I am in STEM) and a "journal entry" which is more like a mini paper. Decent course content but way too much work.
This professor was by far the worst professor I have ever had. His slides were so vague so be prepared to read his books. Quizzes are 10 points and does not show the correct answers afterwards. The discussions are required but not graded. He wants you to buy his books in order to actually pass his class. He grades HARSHLY on the short essay.
Avoid this so-called "professor" at all costs. Too much reading, wants you to buy his books, makes discussions worth no points, and grades the final essay way too harshly. Sure, he gives a grading curve where we only need 40% to pass, but he should seriously reconsider his career as a professor if he is that lazy and harsh.
Quizzes (25%) and final exam (75%) in two parts: "short essay" (25%) and multiple choice (50%). The multiple choice gives 50 questions out of 100 past quiz questions. Write the quiz question along with the answer on a doc because there's a chance it comes back to you (correct answers are also hidden). It saved me a from a lot of rereading.
Very harsh grader with absolutely no feedback. He doesn't care about his students and you will learn nothing when taking this course. The weekly quizzes and final are the only things that are graded. for our final essay, if he finds one thing wrong with it, the whole thing is wrong. The average score for our final essay was 37/100.
Weekly discussions that don't get graded, weekly quiz that is only 10 points. You have to spend over $50 dollars to get HIS textbooks. No feedback or anything, lecture is just you reading his textbooks. "short essay" is a 2-3 page single spaced paper that is graded HARSHLY. Got a 21 for not "following rules" when I did everything he commented on.
NEVER TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR. He provides vague directions for assignments and grades harshly. He provides no feedback on assignments and does not care about his students. I took this class to fulfill a GE requirement and didn't expect it to be this stressful. Not sure who hurt this man but I hope he gets help.
WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR'S COURSE! this isn't a "do the work you'll be fine class" it is "no matter how academically driven you are, you WILL FAIL". despite completing every assignment and reading (which I received no helpful feedback on), I ended with a failing grade because the final was VERY harshly graded with no instructions
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! I had an A the ENTIRE semester, and when it came around to the final I received a failing grade. On the weekly journals (1 essay, 1 quiz per week) I ALWAYS received a 10/10 with no feedback. For the final, I got an F on my paper with a ridiculous amount of feedback he never once critiqued in my previous writing.
If you're looking to complete general education courses especially as a STEM major, do not take it with this guy. All the time you have to spend reading could've went to studying for more important classes. If you do take this class, pirate his textbooks so he doesn't get any more money from you guys buying his stupid textbooks.
Worst professor ever give no clear feedback and want you to spend money on his textbook. Class average was like 30 on final essay which does not make sense and although I did everything he ask I got a failing grade. No clear communication whatsoever even other class need this class to fulfill credit but not worth it.
Do NOT take this professor for any class. It is a waste of time. You might do fine for all the tests and journals, but you can still fail if he decides your final essay is bad. He doesn't give good feedback, he doesn't explain things well, and everything taught is out of a required textbook that he didn't even write. Worst professor I have ever had
Professor bad, hates education
Hello Everyone. This professor decided to give half of the class failing grades for the Final essay, (~40/100 was the avg). His reason was a technicality. Even after writing a comprehensive appeal (since my essay clearly met the requirements), prof did not budge. Sending a formal dispute to the department. This professor is unacceptable.
Get ready to be wronged on a whole new level. Materials based on 2 books written by him, exam makes up majority of grade, but know the essay part will be graded unfairly (based on his standards that he doesn't make clear) and he will not hear you out. He is adamant that the prompt was clear, but it wasn't. He also likes to send petty emails.
Get ready to have an A until the last month of the semester. He graded everyones essay strictly with no warnings. Marks points on small things such as wrong spelling or grammar. If your writing sucks don't bother taking this class. He makes it mandatory for you to buy his book. Feedbacks trash and no actual help.
DONT GET THIS PROFESSOR! You do discussions that aren't graded which is a waste of time. He also grades too harsh for the final paper even if you meet his requirements. Can't even reason with him if you think you deserve a better grade. Most of the class ended up failing or barely passing. Don't expect him to care about you or your grade.
DON'T. JUST DON'T TAKE THIS COURSE IF YOU ARE READY TO FAIL.
idk what to say other than that he is an awful professor. he made us buy his textbook and read like 5 chapters out of it. he is an incredibly tough grader and doesn't seem to care that a majority of his class has failed. take a different professor to fulfill your UD requirements.
I was holding a C-B grade for the entire course only for my entire grade to be determined by the final essay which was graded extremely harshly with feedback that provided almost zero help the median grade held by the entire class on the essay was a 35 I have wasted months of my summer break reading this dudes shitty over priced textbooks for a D
Class is fine if you just need the credit and go C/NC because his grading scale was normal except with the C which is from 70-40%, giving people a way to pass. Not a clear grader and makes you buy textbooks he wrote. Unclear instructions, nobody got an A or even a B+. Doesnt let you see what you got wrong on quizzes so you cant study off of it
Terrible prof. Online class consists of reading his book. 70% of your grade comes down to the final exam and essay, and the class average for the essay was 35%. Unless you absolutely have to take this class, avoid this professor at all costs.
Overall decent prof. took him over summer so definitely fast paced. My one qualm is his grading. You cannot see any of the correct answers or even what you got wrong on quizzes and for the final essay he is harsh on grading but not even based off content but by the layout of the essay. You will lose 20+ points just for not having thesis on its own
Avoid this professor if possible. The class is entirely online with a high-stakes final exam and essay that are graded harshly. The textbooks are overpriced and lectures just consist of reading them. Unstuckstudy AI may help with study prep, but this class is an uphill battle.
This online class was fantastic! The flexible schedule allowed me to balance work and study without stress. The instructor was clear and supportive, and the assignments were straightforward. The course was well-structured, making it easy to follow and stay on track. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a manageable, quality learning experience!
This online AAS class was incredible! It provided a deep, insightful look into the histories and contributions of diverse cultural groups. The instructor was engaging, and the material was thought-provoking, connecting history to current social issues. I gained a richer understanding of racial justice and identity. Highly recommended! I got an A.
If you read and do the work, this class is an easy A. Prof. Lee was engaging, and the material was thought-provoking and relevant. I highly recommend this class to anyone interested in learning about Asian American history!
I'm going to be honest. I cheated, and he called me into office hours, told me to stop, and gave me a chance to stay in the class instead of failing me. He said I could either stay or withdraw, but I should not cheat because another professor who is not BIPOC would likely seek punishment. I really appreciated him giving me a chance.
Take this class if you need the US history requirement. It is easy. I didn't read, but still got 10s on the quizzes. The final essay was st8 forward. So far, I'm getting an A.
The textbooks are available at the library for free download. This class is reading based, reading is required. Weekly quizzes. Final essay and exam. No surprised. Well organized. I'm taking it because it fits my schedule. He's not a hard as others are saying. They just don't read most likely.
I had a tough time this semester and fell behind, but Prof. Lee allowed me to make up the work. He was very understanding of my situation and showed a lot of flexibility and care. The class is well-organized, and he allowed redos on some assignments. He's a great professor.
I took this class online during Summer session. The professor is very patient and very helpful. He's also cares about his students and you can tell he wants his students to pass. He sends out emails to remind us about about upcoming due dates. I highly recommend his class. I'm graduating this winter.
Things I liked about this class: Well-organized materials Flexibility with assignments Quick email responses and helpfulness Detailed coverage of Asian American history with images Clear explanations of topics, and consideration of students' schedules and perspectives.
I did enjoy the very educated readings and will say I learned stuff but just because I learned stuff doesnt not reflect my grade at all which is why he is very weak in that category.
The professor was open to various perspectives and had an open line of communication. The strengths of this professor were that they were clear with their instructions. The teaching instructor demonstrates good knowledge and understanding of Southeast Asian American perspectives.
I really liked how the expectations of the class were straightforward and the weekly quizzes were accurate to the readings, videos, and lectures. I also liked how the materials for each chapter was easily accessible and in one place. The book can be downloaded for free from the library.
Last semester, I took AAS 585 with Lee, put in a lot of effort, and earned an A. His expectations were clear. This semester, I'm taking AAS 570 with much less effort since I'm focused on my senior engineering project. I'm taking it for credit, which he emphasized is easy to earn from day one.
The diversity of the content is one of Professor Lee's greatest strengths. It's hard to come across a class that has so much diversity. Another few of his strengths are his organized Canvas and structure of his class, constant communication, and explained details of what each week has to offer.
The class was well-organized, with each week focusing on a specific Asian ethnicity, linking their history to the previous week's topic. Though I never needed help, the instructor sent daily reminders and encouraged students to reach out if confused. He highlighted the challenges of the course at the start. The flexible asynchronous format.
Throughout the semester, I appreciated how organized and understanding Prof. Lee was. His daily reminders on each week's assignments were particularly helpful for a busy student like me. As for the material, I found both textbooks written by Prof. Lee to be outstandingly insightful. I am truly pleased with what I was assigned to read every week.
The course was structured in a way where we were learning about different Asian groups each week. This class was very beneficial and gave me a lot of knowledge about other ethnic groups that I have not had the opportunity to learn about. The course is organized and it was easy to find everything we needed on canvas.
I think that this instructor was very involved and wanted his students to succeed . He made sure to be involved and although he did not have to he always reminded us with a really good structure of what we had to do for the week
Organization and broad knowledge on the subjects. I'd also say that he was very willing to allow us to explore the information from our perspectives as well whilst guiding us. He was also very transparent about whatever you need to know for the class.
The specific strength of the instructor was responsive to emails when needed. Each week consisted of something new and was laid out nicely on Canvas, though the work was hefty on top of other classes, asking for extensions was granted through emails.
The professor excelled with his verbal cues, outgoing personality, and attention to detail, showing a deep understanding of each time period. His use of humor and positive energy made the class enjoyable. The interactive discussions were valuable, allowing me to see diverse perspectives and ensuring future students will have a positive experience.
The readings and videos that were assigned were short enough to learn from without losing too much interest, so content was easily digested and fascinating. He also had very good communication with weekly readings/lecture videos, upcoming due dates, and any relevant topics that students could benefit from knowing about.
Professor makes it clear what we have to do, and doesn't assign so much work that it's overwhleming. It's not too difficult to keep up with this class.
I really like how Canvas was set up. It wasn't messy. It makes it easy to see what needed to be done. I also like that how he provided excatly what you need to be successful in this class.
I think this Professor is well-rounded with his knowledge and the videos/readings provided were able to expand on his units very well. The course set up is well organized to provide a very linear view of history and it makes it easier to see how history is connected.
Instructor allowed students to work on their own time, as long as the assignments were done and submitted before the specified time at the end of the week. Since this course was asynchronous, everything was paced by the student and all the needed material was available for a good amount of time before the due dates.
he is flexible and understanding of this student's circumstances. he is very passionate in his teaching and even though it was an asynchronous course I feel like I learned a lot and connected with the material greatly.
He is quite understanding and allowed for redos on certain assignments that caused confusion with me and many people within my class. Assignment instructions were clear and class material was interesting and retianable. He is very nice
He knows the materials that was taught in class well. Gave us good resources to help our analyzing
As a working mom, juggling family and school is a challenge, but this online Asian American history class has been a blessing! The content is insightful and relevant, and the flexible schedule makes it easier to balance with my degree. I feel more connected to my heritage while making progress—highly recommend!
Professor Lee clearly teaches the history of Asians in Amerca, organizing the material chronologically from the distant past to the present. The amount of homework and reading assigned is also quite reasonable.
Professor Lee is a generous and well-rounded professor who balances flexibility and strictness in his expectations. He provides clear, direct feedback on journal entries, helping students improve. Thanks to his guidance, I went from averaging 6-8 out of 10 to earning full marks on every entry.
Professor Jonathan Lee is renowned for his expertise in Asian American Studies. He organized his class the way to write journals and complete quizes based on weekly readings and videos that can improve students's knowledge regarding Asian American cultures and religions.
Very organized Replies fast to emails. I would say that giving his students detailed feedback is one of his specific strengths. Another is being able to provide good readings and videos relevant to the unit lessons because I was able to utilize a lot of them.
I think that this instructor was very involved and wanted his students to succeed . He made sure to be involved and although he did not have to he always reminded us with a really good structure of what we had to do for the week. He is rather knowledgable about this course based on the content of his textbook.
Communication was done very well. Even as an asynchronous course, it felt really easy to stay caught up to what was new. The quizzes were well done as well. The course was really organized and very helpful. There were always weekly reminders to do the homework.
he's very open-minded about parts of the concepts that make me want to explore more about my cultural identity.
He doesn't care if you have other classes. I asked him for an extension because I was busy with my major classes, and he told me to ask the other professors for an extension. I was upset, but after thinking it over, I realized I had been disrespectful. I later found out that he does give extensions if you have a legitimate reason.
I really appreciated the overall structure of the class. While the reading workload is pretty heavy, it's interesting enough that you want to complete the assignments.
Lectures are able to facilitate learning environments that help students to connect and communicate, and form good learning communities that promote knowledge sharing and collaboration.
The journals and essay were easy to do because the instructions are clear. He tells us exactly what he wants us to do in terms of materials use, number of quotes, and page limit. There is no surprises. If you follow the instructions, you will get a good grade. I got 10s in all the journals and 100 in the short essay.
Professor Lee excels in organization and efficiency. The weekly modules are consistently well-structured, and the information is always clear and easy to understand. Overall, Professor Lee is an excellent instructor.
I liked how the professor was able to provide a variety way of learning. From videos, to articles, as well from the textbook itself. I thought it was really helpful for me to be able to learn from different ways. Finally, make sure you know the racial formation theory well. It is the basis of the final exam.
Good structures within the course The examples he provided really helped me understand the material better. A lot of information from books I asked to redo some quizzes and he allowed it He was understanding and accepted my essay late without penalties You don't need to buy the books. they are free to download from the library
Taking this online Asian American history class was transformative! As a Chinese American woman, I learned so much about the resilience and contributions of our community. The course highlighted stories that were often overlooked, making me feel empowered and proud of my heritage. The lessons were insightful, engaging, and inspiring.
I liked that assignments had clear instructions Clearly defined class structure Required great writing and a lot of interesting topics You can download chapters you need from the textbook for free from the library.
This online Asian American history class was an incredible experience! As a student with a learning disability, I was supported every step of the way. The professor was patient, understanding, and made the content accessible. I felt encouraged and confident throughout the course. The material was engaging and eye-opening.
I really liked how the expectations of the class were straightforward and the weekly quizzes were accurate to the readings, videos, and lectures. He maintained a focus on how each group was racialized throughout the term which helps to develop a lens in which we can identify these moments of racialization throughout history
There is honestly nothing that I liked about this instructor he was so strict and excepted not late work regardless of the reason. I once asked him if I could turn in five assignments that I didn't do because I was sick, and he asked me to withdraw the class because I didn't have doctor's note. I didn't go see a doctor.
This could just be personal but it was very heavy on reading some weeks. I'm a weak reader and my reading comprehension isn't the best. Some of the quiz questions were a bit unclear and sometimes confusing. Some of my favorite texts were from his actual book where I felt those were the most engaging and relatable.
The load of assignments are truly heavy. In my opinion, Writing a journal, completing a quiz, and discussion post weekly is very much as students are not taking his class only. As a full time students, I had a hard time to complete his required assignments weekly. Not my major so I think too much work. Books are free to download.
He gave detailed feedback on assignments and provided feedback before the next assignment is due so feedback can be considered before submitting. He allowed redos on some early assignments so we can get use to it. He's fair and understanding. I took the class for Credit and it was easy to get. Textbooks can be downloaded for free online.
This class was an eye-opening experience. It deepened my understanding of the complexities and contributions of Asian Americans throughout U.S. history. The course was well-structured, with engaging readings and discussions. It challenged my perspective and helped me appreciate the diversity and resilience of this community. Getting credit is easy.
I've known Dr. Lee for two years, taking four of his classes. He's been an unofficial advisor, helping me apply to grad school. His advice was direct and honest, and I'm grateful for it. He wrote recommendation letters for me, leading to my acceptance into three programs with full funding.
He maintained a focus on how each group was racialized throughout the term which helps to develop a lens in which we can identify these moments of racialization throughout history.
Professor Lee has done everything he can for our asynchronous class! I don't think he can do anything beyond what he already does to better his students experiences! There's no need to purchase the books, you can download for free online.
the class overall went smoothly and despite being a fair challenge, I learn a lot about Asian American history.
I've taken 3 classes for Credit with this professor. Same format and expectations in each one. Follow the instructions, get the readings, and do the writing assignments. Very easy to pass. I avoided taking the final exams by doing well on the journals and quizzes. It helped me focus on my other classes. Most readings are downloadable for free.
Grading the assignments promptly, although I understand that having so many students can be difficult. I am appreciative of all the emails he sent and the communication that was sent to us in a timely manner. He did respond within good timing and was very gracious in allowing us to re-submit assignments and give us proper feedback to improve!
I'm taking this class for credit and I already have enough points for credit, so I do not need to do the final exam. I get to focus on my other classes. It is designed to be an easy Credit grade class. Overall, great class and nice instructor. I would take again.
You don't need to read everything. The textbooks are available from the library for free. The class is organized well. Weekly lessons focus on specific ethnic groups. He sends out reminders each week three times to keep us on track.
The specificity of his instructions for the journals and essays is insane. At first, I did not like them, but afterwards, I realized they helped me in my writing because they clearly indicate what I need to do. Follow the instructions, and you will do well.
Understanding. Flexible with the time schedule and extending assignments.
Professor Lee did a fantastic job of keeping up with reminders and explaining all course concepts. The weekly module is properly detailed and announcement reminder are sent on what to expect for the week.
The instructor was extremely understanding, patient and I enjoyed his class SO MUCH.
The professor is very patient and very helpful. He's also cares about his students and you can tell he wants his students to pass. He sends out emails to remind us about about upcoming due dates.
Racialization theory is all you need to know in order to do well in this class. The entire class is based on this theory. The instructor clearly communicated expectations and consistently updated the class on assignments and due dates. They also provided ample materials to ensure a solid understanding of the course.
Very good class. I saw the professor in a Hulu documentary! Out There: Crimes of the Paranormal. He really knows his material and wrote the textbook.
I like how he provided a video and transcripts on his online classes and gets back to our email question really fast, which is very helpful. He makes it very clear that we will not be able to use IA to help on his assignments, so be ready to do the work honestly.
It took me a few weeks to get used to how direct he is, but after a while, I got used to it and appreciated it.
He talked about the history of Asian Americans in great detail so that everyone could fully understand it and also provided some images to illustrate it. Detailed explanations of the different topics for the class, consideration of students' schedules and perspectives.
Fast replier and willingness to help
This materials-free, flexible online class was an amazing experience! The ability to learn at my own pace, access materials anytime, and interact with fellow students made it incredibly convenient. Despite being zero-cost, the content was high-quality and engaging.
The instructor was fantastic! Always flexible and understanding, they allowed extensions whenever needed, ensuring I could keep up with the course despite my busy schedule. Their responsiveness and support created a positive, stress-free learning environment. I truly appreciated their patience and dedication to students' success!
Professor Lee has done everything he can for our asynchronous class! I don't think he can do anything beyond what he already does to better his students' experiences!
He was incredibly flexible with the course and provided clear, thoughtful guidance on what he expected from us. This made it easy to stay on track and feel supported throughout. His approach created an open, positive learning environment that made achieving our goals feel both attainable and rewarding.
As a Hmong student, I found the Southeast Asian American course to be both enlightening and empowering. It gave me a deeper understanding of my heritage and the shared experiences of our community. The course was engaging, thoughtful, and fostered meaningful discussions that helped me connect more with my identity and culture.
He is good at laying out the curriculum clearly, so you can follow along easily online. I took this class for credit no credit, and easily got credit.
Each week consisted of something new and was neatly organized on Canvas. Though the workload was heavy on top of other classes, extensions were granted through email requests.
I really liked how Canvas was organized. It was clean and easy to navigate, clearly showing what needed to be done and providing everything necessary to succeed in the class.
This entire class is about racialization in AA history.
The professor is flexible and allows for late work. Early on, he allowed for redo as we learn how to do the journal assignment. This class is online and very organized.
I wasn't sure what to expect, but this class ended up being more interesting than I thought. The professor was knowledgeable, and I learned a lot about Asian American history and challenges. The discussions were okay, but some parts felt repetitive. Still, it gave me a better understanding of the issues they face today.
A fully online class that is well-designed and has clear expectations. I have no complaints, and I will take an upper-division class with this professor next semester.
Take it for credit no credit. It is very easy to get credit. I didn't have to take the final exam because I already have enough points for credit.
The professor clearly outlines what we need to do and keeps the workload manageable. It's easy to stay on track in this class.
The instructor's strengths included a well-organized course structure, helpful weekly outlines, and clear instructions. Flexible assignment deadlines made managing the workload easier. Lectures were engaging, and the readings were both challenging and interesting. Overall, it was an enjoyable and thought-provoking class!
Despite being a fully online course, the instructors were consistently communicative and ensured that the deadlines were both clear and manageable.
I like that it is an online class that does not force students to engage with others very much. As an introvert, I like everything about this class because it is well organized and routine, so there are no surprises, and the instructor seems to really care about student learning by allowing redos and being flexible with late assignments.
I highly do not recommend Professor Lee. Weekly quizzes accumulate for 100/300 cumulative points upon 30-60+ pages of weekly reading. The remaining 200 points are based on the two-part final where the class average for the Part 1 Final Essay was a 16%. Professor Lee is highly critical and does not care about the success of his students.
I struggled this semester with the writing assignment, but I slowly got better at it. He allowed redos on some of them. I just aced my final essay. Follow the instructions and you will do well. Reading is important. I'm going to take another class with him next semester. I liked the flexibility of how this class was setup.
I worked hard all semester, and I'm happy with my final grade. His instructions are detailed, so make sure to follow them carefully. The expectations are clear, and the class is well-organized. It is also flexible in terms of weekly assignments, which is important for me since I work.
This teacher was unprofessional and unprepared, with disorganized lessons and no effort to engage or support students. Questions were ignored, feedback was nonexistent, and the environment was unwelcoming. It was an extremely frustrating and negative experience overall. I cannot recommend this teacher to anyone.
Do NOT take this course. Had weekly discussions that were not graded and only had weekly quizzes in the grade book that were worth 10 points. Managed to have a B+ the whole semester till his final flunked me. The two part final was worth most of your grade and the mean average was 21/100 and 8/100.
Had 0 assignments to help throughout the course other than non graded discussions. Weekly quizzes were worth 10 points and were the only thing in the grade book other than your final. Tough grader for the final. Most of the class failed with a few passing. DONT
Didn't have office hours for almost a month due to meetings towards the end of the semester. Average for the final was 8/100 and 21/100 with no other grades in other than quizzes. Unprofessional and doesn't give enough material to learn information other than weekly readings of his OWN textbooks.
DON'T take this class, the final is dependent on your grade as there is only weekly quizzes in the grade book that only account for 100/300 points in this class. The average for the final was a 17% and a 8% for the second part with no curve. He also makes you buy his OWN textbooks as those are the only sources allowed to be used.
Don't take this class. Had no materials other than his OWN 2 books you had to buy. Held an 85% the whole semester just for his two part final to bring it down to an F. The average for the final was a 17% with the second part being 8%. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, the other reviews seem to be before the final, just wait and see.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. He only grades based on the scores of weekly quizzes and the two-part final, which majority of the class failed. His grading is harsh and almost impossible to please. If the mean for the final is 12.4 and 9.0 then that should tell you something about the professor. The majority should not be failing.
Unfortunately, my experience with Professor Lee was disappointing. I found his grading of journals to be biased and inconsistent. When I asked for help, his responses were not constructive, leaving me feeling unsupported. Overall, I would not recommend taking his class if you're looking for a positive learning experience.
Awful awful awful! I cannot express that enough. I maintained an A all semester, even got a high grade on the final essay, but the second part of the final is what brought my grade down to a C. The average score for the class was so slow. That speaks to his teaching abilities. He provides no feedback. Do NOT taking any courses with him!
I thought this class was great. I did most of my work on the weekend because I work, so the flexible online format was great. You have to read, and the textbooks can be downloaded for FREE. The essay requests require citations from the book, so using AI will not work. I think maybe that is why some are upset. Just do the work required.
I didn't do well on the first part of the final exam, but I met with him to discuss it, and he explained it to me. The second part of the final exam was basically the same topic but in a short answer format. I got 100/100 and ended up getting a B+. The textbook is a must, and it can be downloaded from the library at no cost. I highly recommend it!
His lectures are insightful and engaging, making even the most complex topics accessible. I regret not fully applying myself to his class, as I now see how much I could have learned. I highly recommend his courses to anyone seeking a deeper understanding of history. Don't use ChatGPT on the finals. It requires details and quotations.
I appreciate how the professor designed the final to prevent cheating. The clear instructions ensured academic integrity and discouraged the use of AI-generated essays. I scored 280/300 and earned an A. I highly recommend this class and will definitely be taking another course with this professor next semester.
I like his teaching style a lot. I'm taking AAS 380 next semester. I'm a single parent and I need online classes and his are the most flexible I have taken. There is a lot of writing and reading, but its interesting. If you follow the instructions, you'll easily get 10/10 on weekly journals. It is pretty much the same with the final. No complaints.
Get ready to read and write a lot of journals and essays. Although there is a lot of writing, he provides constructive comments and allows for some redos. He reviewed drafts of my work until I was able to do the journals correctly. You'll have to read to do well.
You cannot copy from the internet or use AI in this class.
I spent 3-4 hours each week on this class. It is online, asynchronous, and flexible. Required textbooks are a must have, but is available for free from the campus library. I didn't buy them. Quizzes are many based on readings, not lectures. The final exams are heavily based on readings and require specific engagement with readings.
Don't take the class, had an A and actually did good on the second part of the final but the first part showed his incompetent grading. Ended off with a C. His failed books were hard to find for free.. and the chapters consisted of his opinions and standpoints for 1 page then the rest with the actual contents of a bill or act. You WONT learn w Lee.
This class wasn't hard, minimal reading and quizzes but his final failed almost the whole class. Don't know why people are talking about AI as a factor of failing as I took my time to read and used only his materials, grading just sucked. Final instructions were 4 bullet points, then grades based off HIS POV of what radicalization is.
Focus on his lectures and readings. Books are available for free from the library on campus. I like how his instructions are very specific for the essay, which makes it easier for me to do because I just focus on answering the specific questions. Overall, great class and a great instructor. I'm taking an upper division with him next semester.
This online Asian American history class was an eye-opening and empowering experience! As a Hmong American student, I appreciated how the course highlighted diverse voices and stories, including my own community's history. The content was engaging, thought-provoking, and gave me a deeper understanding of the triumphs of Asian Americans.
this class is flexible for someone who works. he'll give you a week in order to complete the reading, quiz and journal. you must read for sure because the writing is based on reading. i'm taking another class again with Lee.
This well-organized online class was perfect for students with work commitments. I appreciated the clear structure and had a very positive experience. The two finals featured the same question—one as a short essay, the other as a short answer. I was on the borderline between B+ and A-, and he bumped me to an A-.
FULLY ONLINE AND FULLY FLEXIBLE. 10 QUIZZES. 1 SHORT ESSAY. 1 SHORT ANSWER FINAL. MUST READ. BOOKS ARE FREE FROM THE LIBRARY.
A lot of short writing assignments and weekly reading quizzes. Overall, the class is structured and organized and the professor is relaxed and flexible about late work with proper notice.
As a first-generation Lao student, this Asian American history class was eye-opening and enriching. The content was diverse and inclusive, covering of many communities, including my own. The engaging lectures, discussions, and resources helped me connect deeply to my heritage. Highly recommend!
The Asian American history class was informative, but the fully online format had its ups and downs. While the lectures were comprehensive and covered key topics, some discussions felt disconnected without face-to-face interaction. The assignments were manageable, but the lack of live engagement made it harder to stay motivated.
I was at city college for three years and took a lot of online classes due to having to work full time. This is one of the best online classes I have taken because it is so flexible with assignments.
A gem. He really cares about student success and went out of his way to help me.
My high school BFF died middle of the semester and I struggled with getting my work done. He was very caring and allowed me to submit late work and even allowed me to have an incomplete to give me time over the break to finish up my finals. I got them done and submitted it last night. He sent me a very supportive message showing that he cares.
I wish there are more online classes like his. They are well designed, organized, and flexible.
Seriously, if you're thinking about appealing your grade, just know you'll be cross-examined and grilled. I really regret doing it.
Professor Lee is an incredibly kind and caring instructor who truly goes above and beyond for his students. His passion for Asian American history is matched only by his genuine desire to help others succeed. He creates a warm, welcoming classroom where every student feels valued and supported. Truly an inspiring teacher! I'm taking another class.
The professor is a true role model, teaching students that success is built on integrity and hard work. Instead of simply punishing cheating, they encourage open dialogue about the value of honesty in academics and life. Through their guidance, students learn that true achievement comes from effort, not shortcuts.
Great class. Great professor. You must read to do well. He's open to different perspectives as long as they engaged with the assigned readings.
I enjoyed the online course. It was well planned and laid out, easy to follow, and the workload (homework, reading, quizzes, discussions, and tests) was just enough.
I was allowed to add late, and he has been helpful in giving me the readings because I don't have the books yet. He seems to be kind and understanding. He assured me that I could catch up even though I missed one of three weeks of the winter session.
y'all are cooked
If you think you can take this class for an easy GE you are wrong. He's a nice professor and his comments explain what you did good on or bad on and not much work but for the essays if your views don't match with his then you are going to get a bad grade. I don't recommend taking this class. Basically you're cooked.
I took this Winter course, one of my best history classes. It had 3 essays, similar in structure. Grading emphasized improvement, doubling scores with each essay for better grades. Scoring 100 on the final exam adjusted my second essay score to 100 too. The course emphasized applying racialization theory for content analysis over memorization.
I got an A, so I have no complaints. I like that he will replace lower test scores with higher ones if we improve. I scored low on the first test and got better and better on the next two, so I ended up with an A. It was not easy. I had to read. Listen to lectures and put in a lot of effort.
DO NOT. I repeat DO NOT take this prof. Worst experience ever, half the class failed all because of a final that was graded unfairly, do not waste your time taking this prof. You will regret it. Students are currently talking to the dean about him and many students have had issues with this prof. He is highly petty and ford not care about students
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF. Worst prof ever, only works for his check does not care for students and will fail you for no reason, students are reporting him to the dean as I type this please don't take his class. -1000/10 experience 0 stars
He uses the classes he teaches as a platform for his views. If you don't agree with him he will fail you. He makes you buy his failed book (which isn't even written by him, its a revised printing with other scholarly works), then makes you cite it to argue for a point that's completely unrelated to the sources.
I took this professor a semester or two ago. He makes you buy a book that he wrote. If you dont read the book extensively and pay attention to EVERY small detail you will not pass with a good grade because he adds trick questions to quizzes by changing a small detail like a stem class when its a GE.
This class isnt hard but i just find it crazy that we have to pay for a 20-50 dollar textbook for only 2 midterms, the discussions we do in class arent really necessary for the textbooks. The only times we needed the textbook was during the 2 Exams... Also the discussions arent graded. If you have the money for it then go ahead but if your broke..
Absolutely don't get this professor if you want to pass. Grades very harshly and unfairly. Doesn't even make sense. Will fail you for no reason. Seems to use his platform to sell his books.
Worst class ever he doesn't grade your essays by how u do but by if u meet what he asks I missed a citation and he deducted my grade 20 points… he's insane I do not recommend, when he makes a mistake about your grade he'll gaslight you and not admit to his mistake. Ego on 1000!
worse professor ever makes you buy his books if you don't agree with him you fail when using other resources he fails you right away even if you are using the material to help you understand
He makes sure to sell his own textbook and makes the essays from it otherwise he will give you an automatic 0 if any outside sources used. Very stubborn does not appropriately respond to emails. Small mistakes are automatic zeros. Makes you work throughout semester for ungraded work.
He wrote the textbook and the only place to purchase it was one website where the book was $100, shipping was $50 and if you wanted it expedited, it was $355. He gave me a low grade on the midterm bc it wasn't inline with his thoughts. Everything else done in the class is ungraded, so there is no way to bring up your grade. Would NOT recommend.
At ALL costs, avoid this professor. Makes you do work that isn't graded but is required and only grades the essays. Class average for essays was abysmal and makes you buy his two books that are extremely similar to each other. Again, avoid this professor. He WILL fail you, it is not worth your time and effort.
Terrible Professor
Teacher is incredibly vague how he wants the essay to be structure so pay very close attention to instructions. There is no clear rubric of how he wants you write despite him being very judgmental. He wants you to buy his latest book and only the latest. Have a slightly different version of his two books? Yeah you get a zero for citing wrong pages.
Only accepts his own opinions as correct; anything that challenges his views will get marked down. No clear grading rubric; the only grades are the essays (most of the class failed). Doesn't give helpful feedback, just unprofessional comments. Feels like you're being judged rather than taught. Avoid if you value open discussion or fair grading.
I got both 93 on my midterms but he gave me 10/100 for my final. He said it's not okay for him to change grade for me but the rubric cannot convince me that I deserve this 10/100 on my final. I met all the requirements I just don't know how did he grade me 10/100. He did not reply emails and I got D+and need to retake this class.
I have never had any issues with getting good grades & I'm failing ! He only grades you on 3 things and if it's not exactly what he wants you're screwed. You have discussions every week that are not only ungraded but you also receive no feedback back to tell you if you are understanding the concepts.he never fully explains anything
While he assigns books he wrote, they are available for free download from the campus library and he lets us know that. I like that he will double the score on the essays if we should improvement. I got a 65 on the first essay and a 95 on the second, so my first essay was changed to a 95 because of improvement. No other professor does this.
The class is well organized, and I understand the workload. The assignments are also easy to understand, and the instructor is a good communicator.
Prof. Lee is very attentive when grading, especially when it comes to his rubric. I like that he allowed us to improve on our mistakes in the essays.
Good instructor
This class was incredible! The teacher was so caring, always made time for me, and created a supportive experience. His passion and engaging lessons brought the material to life. I felt truly seen and inspired—one of the best online learning experiences I've ever had!
This online class is flexible and fits perfectly into my life, and the relaxed pace makes learning enjoyable, not stressful. The content is clear and engaging. Grade is based on three essays. Highly recommend for stress-free learning!
This professor is not supportive and only points out the worse things. Never constructive criticism, only insulting comments. He says he is open to discussion in email but when you email him he is not open minded at all. If you want to buy two textbooks and fail the class regardless if you are good at writing or not then go ahead take the class.
I submitted my final essay earlier, and it has already been graded. All three essays are on the same topic of racialization. The instructions were very detailed, but they helped me with my writing. I'm taking another class with him next fall.
My first class with Prof. Lee. The class is exceptionally well designed, offering a flexible schedule that fits my busy schedule since I work. The course structure supports learning with clear content and assignments. I appreciated the opportunity to be graded on improvement—it truly encouraged growth. I downloaded the book from the campus library.
I'm really impressed by how he holds all students to high standards—it really shows that he believes in our ability to grow and improve.
He's a very supportive professor. I felt supported the entire semester. He allowed me to submit my essays late twice because I had to work.
The instructor is clear and direct, setting expectations early, which really helps set the tone for the course. The course itself is well-organized and easy to navigate, making it a smooth and straightforward learning experience with minimal issues along the way.
Professor Lee is incredibly knowledgeable, as made clear by the two assigned textbooks he wrote.
Asynchronus teaching
This professor was very informed about all aspects of the subject and, through his videos, helped students better understand racialization as a process in history.
Got a good grade, but this class was frustrating. It's easy, but the structure is a mess and the self-written textbook is shallow and cherry-picked. Essays were painful to write because the sources are honestly stupid, and I doubt he reads them—I know someone who submitted theirs at 11 PM and woke up to a graded paper the next morning
The essays were challenging, but nonetheless, the class was well organized, and we knew what to expect.
I liked the detailed structure of the essay assignments. It got a perfect score in this class.
This class is mad chill — everything's laid out clear, so I know what's coming up. The assignments make sense, and the prof knows how to break stuff down easy.
I really liked this class—learned a ton and it honestly gave me a lot to think about. I even found out some stuff about my own culture that I didn't know before, which was super cool.
I'm glad I did not opt for Credit No Credit. I almost did. But he will replace lower scores if you do better, so I ended up with an A.
It's ridiculous that you are only graded by the three essays in this class. The discussions he puts out throughout the weeks are not even graded. If you want to actually write meaningful and engaging work, don't take this class. His essays are limiting in terms of structure—yet if you don't use his specific structure, you get deducted 20 points.
Your grade is based on three essays. He doubles with improvement. All essays are based on racialization concept.
I am not the best writer, so having to write 3 essays is hard. But the instructions and the outline he provides makes it doable. I checked the book out from the library. He graded the essays really fast, so we know are grades in 1-2 days.
I'm graduating, and I'm glad I took this class before graduating. Great class. Great prof. Great material.
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical at first, but this course delivered. The content was solid, and the instructor really knew how to keep things engaging. Everything was well-organized, videos weren't too long, and the essays actually helped me learn.
Best history class ever. I can now confidently and intelligently talk about "race".
I am grateful for the learning and growth I experienced during this semester.
The textbook is available for download at the campus library. The grade is based on three essays that are reading-heavy and rigid in structure. The details helped me write my essay. The focus of the essay is on the analysis of concepts.
I'm Khmer and this class is the first class I have taken that was all about my country and culture. I loved it. The prof was very responsive to emails and graded essays quickly.
The thing that I like most about this professor is that you know exactly what is expected, and all three essays have the same detailed instructions and requirements.
I was tryna juggle six classes and couldn't keep up. He told me I should drop like two or three, so I did. Real talk, that was solid advice. I'm hella not doing that many classes again.
Take it for credit no credit. Pretty easy to get credit.
Two thumbs up! I'm taking another class with Professor Lee next fall, since he told me the structure and design will be the same as this one. I appreciate knowing what's expected in such a detailed and clear way.
I attended office hours almost every week, and it was beneficial, as it prepared me for the three essays. He gives you the answers during office hours. Make sure to read. The required books are available for free at the campus library.
Prof. Lee helped me with my grad application for Saint Mary's College of California and I not only got accepted into their master's program for Marriage and Family Therapy, but I also got some scholarships. I took four classes with Prof. Lee and learned how to become a better academic writer.
This prof is responsive and communicative, providing timely feedback and addressing student questions promptly.
Don't take this professor at all, uses his platform to sell his books to his students. Doesn't care about effort at all. He has specific standards you have to follow in order to pass the class.
Awful teacher, does not want students to succeed. Avoid at all costs, take another GE. Course material is good, but unclear grading policy and lack of graded assignments make this course a heavy burden. Required formatting is unclear and he will fail your assignments if it is not perfect. You also have to buy his textbook for the course.
I took this course during the summer to fulfill graduation credits. He gave me a failing grade on a paper that was thoughtful and compelling, simply because it did not follow his rigid outline. How is one to learn without pushing the boundaries of their class and the material? Extremely disappointing. Never take his class
The interesting material and his accessibility redeems him slightly. But the grading is tough and heavily semantic. It's worth mentioning that I scored significantly higher than the class average, yet still failed due to near impossible grading standards. I'm still here because I'm past the drop deadline. Avoid for the sake of your GPA.
This professor is terrible, I'm not sure how he is still employed at SFSU. He lacks the critical thinking skills to understand the perspective of his students. He claims to have office hours but makes it extremely difficult to schedule time with him. During his office hours, he is quick to put down his students. Whatever you do, do not take this.
No other teacher on this site, for SFSU, has this many reviews... Some of my hardest professors, have 20 ratings total over the span of 4 years, Lee Is the worst Teacher I ever had, and is a stain on the schools ethnic Department, only solice I get is that I know he will end up reading this before he writes a fake positive review on himself.
I would also like to add that if you read many of the positive reviews, you can see that they were copied and pasted from earlier reviews. Been going down the rabbit hole the Admin are aware of Lee as being a problem but they cant do anything because department budget is non existant. Not ethnic studies MJR just wanted to learn but got robbed.
He graded on 3 essays, and that's it, each essay has a vague, unclear rubric which he uses inconsistently to grade. I am still unsure how I was graded so poorly in this course, and he cannot seem to explain. 2-3 page essay using 21-24 of his quotes from his books you have to buy. Not exactly much space left for my work if I gotta cram his quotes.
You have to take three big tests throughout the semester and if you do bad on even just one test, the highest grade you can get is a D. I think this is not a fair assessment especially when he is an extremely hard grader. I am going to have to withdraw from this class to stop it from effecting my GPA. I'm very disappointed of this class.
The worst class I've seen here at SFSU so far. He grades VERY strictly on 3 essays throughout the whole course and there doesn't seem to be another way to get points other than those 3. There were optional discussions but they don't count towards your grade. This course just seems like an excuse for you to buy the required textbooks he wrote.
The worst professor i have ever spoken to.I emailed him asking if he could meet with me for the second midterm to discuss the instructions because i got an F for the first midterm, he said no. He verbally bullied my classmate and said if they report him to the dean, nothing will happen. Not just a horrible professor but a horrible person.
Please avoid at all costs. I'm not usually one to complain as very few teachers truly deserve it, but this is an exception. His essay structure is a trap, you have to repeat precisely his personal opinions or he will fail you. He said very unprofessional things to me and then bragged that even if I tell on him, the department won't do anything.
Lee's course is the worst academic experience I've had at SFSU or any university. Whatever claims of "academic rigor" he hides behind to justify his actions to the University are enabling him to demoralize students. Hope the Dean takes his unprofessional conduct seriously as he seems to enjoy getting away with it. Avoid this pathetic instructor.
Grading is based only on 3 essays. Essays have a strict rubric and harshly deducts points. Requires latest textbook edition. Assigns weekly readings and videos. Has weekly discussions, but worth 0 points. I did bad on the first essay and he encourages students who did poorly to withdraw. No extra credit. Avoid this class!
PLEASE AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COST. He is very unprofessional. Discussions are "mandatory" but is not graded and counts as nothing. Close friend of mine sent a withdrawal request but Lee was offended by was with being said of him and threatened to report what he thinks as a violation of Student Code of Conduct. Save yourself the trouble.
This elective is discouraging. The work isn't hard, but many students fail because the grading feels unfair and unclear. Even when we follow the rubric, we still fail with little feedback. Many good writers fail here, and some students feel personal emotions about what the U.S. did to Cambodia might be affecting grading. We just want fair grading.
If you have any respect for yourself, do not take this class. He gives weekly discussions that he encourages you to do but are not even graded. You're only graded on 3 essays so if you don't do well on one, theres no way to get your grade up in between. His lectures sound so incoherent it's like he doesn't even know what he's talking about himself.
None of your graded assignments matter bc if you write the final essay based on his rubric and he does not agree with you, you Will fail. He failed almost everyone in the class (not joking), and does not like criticism. I don't know why this man is an educator if he refuses to support his students like every single other professor i've had before.
Grading is extremely strict and detail-focused. Even minor citation or formatting issues, such as page numbering, can result in significant point deductions. (citation page numbering -20)
Worst professor I have had at SFSU. 0 empathy toward students & minimal concern for student success. doesn't show support or guidance encourages students to drop the class Weekly discussion posts are required but not graded the entire course grade is based on only three essays- creates unnecessary pressure & does not reflect consistent effort.
Tough Grader, he has a precise grading criteria and if you go outside of his instructions, you'll get an F for the assignment. If you misunderstand the instructions or don't understand the assignment you better ask for clarification before you start writing. He will 100% check that you actually read the entire chapter or handout. LOTS OF HOMEWORK.
