Teaches intro classes on Grad. level
Not the hardest teacher but he is up there. Gives you 70% of the test
Plays favorites.

Arrogant jerk. Has a God complex. I'd like to see him do my job; oh but wait, its in the real world.
Was very hard to follow his class!!
gives you the test befor you take the test. The material was difficult to understand at times, but an easy A if you do as he says.
pretty tough, he is dedicated to teach his students the principles of economy
I have learned more in his class then I have ever learned before. He is by far the best professor I have ever encountered. He is devoted to teaching and knows his stuff. The class is hard but there is nothing unfair about him. He has no favorites.
Very hard class but a great professor. Very willing to help and very enthusiastic about his ECON. Recommend his class but be prepared and don't miss a lecture!! Overall, good class!!
DR. Leightner is the best professor that i have ever had. He teaches the material very well and gives you EVERY bit of information that you need for the tests. You must come to every class and copy his notes word for word from the board to do well.
Best teacher ever! He is very clear about what is going to be on the test. He is also very enthusiastic about ECON. He uses real world examples, which help you understand. You must go to every class or you will be lost.
Leightner is pretty cool, his class isn't easy, but he knows his stuff and wants you to really learn not just memorize. Take him, it's worth it.
Dr. Leightner may not be easy, but he is fair and is truly interested in people becoming educated, not memorizing. He is pretty straight up that his tests are from pre-tests. Take him if you want to learn rather than sit through a memorization exercise.
fun and interesting
This guy can teach. He has many haters out there, but they are people who do not wish to learn anything. He is corny, and bounces off the room, but he will teach you something if you let him. One of the best at ASU. He is not that hard cause he gives you the test before hand. Just study his notes!!!
One of the best teachers at ASU you will learn a lot but you must go to every class. Tests are pretty much given in advance but you have to study a lot to make an A And it's still not guaranteed because you must apply what you learn.
Dr. Leightner is a very good instructor for a beginning ECON class. He clearly has a passion for his work, and the class flows very smoothly. You get a test bank on day 1, so if you fail, it is your own fault. He answers emails quickly and was always available to answer any question I had.
Leightners class was VERY HARD. Everyday was another BORING lecture that lasted the ENTIRE period. He gives you a sample test beforehand, but what most people dont realize is that you MUST MEMORIZE the TEST BANK, (which is 20+ ?'s or more) for each unit test. Dont say i didnt warn you.
HIS CLASS WAS HARD FOR ME! Yes he does teach well, but he is tough! He teaches this way becuase its his profession! He doesn't teach by a text book and his test MAKE you think WAY out the box!
This guy thinks he should be teaching every class on the MBA program. One of the most big-headed professors at ASU. Yes - he does know a lot - but he is so full of himself.
Listen to me!! You will never learn more useful information from another professor at ASU!! Dr. Leighter will teach you everything you need to know, so suck it up, stop complaining that you actually have to study in this class, and learn from him!!!
Awesome professor. Willteach you to think critically. The only professor at ASU who will prepare you for an MBA. His class is a lot of work, but that's why I'm in college, right?
I highly recomend this class. I took the first part of macro with another professor, and it wasn't even in the same ballpark with Leightner.
He is very funny and very interesting. His tests are just very hard though!
Hey man, this guy's class is no joke. It was challenging, but I still remember everything from it. He's a very structured guy, and the rewards for hard work are there. I strongly recommend for the serious student. Whiners need not apply.
He is a great teacher and really knows his stuff!! But it is def not easy! If you aren't willing to study do not take this class!
EXTREMELY HARD TEACHER!! You must study!! Loves his graphs and charts. Very nice but this is not a "Bird Course."

Funny all the ratings essentially say "tough but you learn a lot," as if they were all posted by the same person. This class isn't hard once you realize you only need to memorize the matrix of charts and graphs, but do you learn Economics? NO! He obfuscates the material and takes his professional frustrations out on the class. Avoid this blow hard.
oh my goodness never take this teacher if economics is not your forte. this guy is ridicously hard and so not helpful. avoid taking his class for your own good.
Avoid this man at all costs! You have been warned. I have a MBA from ASU and dropped him first time hoping someone else would come along and ASU hired Bauer. There were 45 in class with avg size normally around 20 or less. Most had failed Leigthner. Ole Jergun basically gave everyone a grade to get folks out of program. This man is horrible
Dont kmnow how i survived. Extremely hard class, no textbooks to help. He is very strict on grades.
Stay away from this guy... he teaches his intro class like its an advanced class. If you dont get his illustrations it frusterates him... If you care anything for your GPA dont take this guy.
Most students should avoid at all costs. I am a dean's list student and I struggled. If you don't have the mind of a math/engineering major, I would not take hime. Good person but he can be pompous and condescending.
his class is friggin hard.. he's not all that helpful and if you're not too familiar with economics, dont take him.. take brauer or brown
This class was tough. Dr Leightner is demanding but he gives you all the test questions the first day of class. You defintely have to put the time in to do well and learn from him. If you take his class, try not to miss any classes and ask a lot of quesitons. I struggled but learned a lot. I am taking his MACRO class next semester. Good Luck.
Don't take this guy, unless you already have a degree in ecinomics, then you may be lucky enough to get a D
Definitely demanding, however you WILL learn how to use and apply the concepts that he teaches. This is by no means an easy "A" but it is by far my favorite class. Most will not prefer this class but if you are curious about economics at all Dr. Leightner will sure make you think about it and challenge you it A LOT.
Great Professor but very tough. Sticks to syllabus, is organized and fair. Taught models and graphs with emphasis on applying to real world. Interested in Asia. Did tell some funny stories. Students must work for grades.
One of the most knowledgable and passionate professors I know. He is the kind of teacher good students love and bad students hate. Be prepared to think analytically, study alot and learn even more. You will definitely get your money's worth. If you are interested in our country's financial crisis, take his Econ 4999.
He is an excellent teacher but sometimes his explanations to questions are lengthy and confusing. You MUST attend class everyday!!!!!!!! you only get 3 misses and then your toast. If you miss 2 then you have to do some confusing report thingy that he says no one has managed to do properly. Make sure to take notes in class and set up a study group!
Definitely have to attend EVERY class and take good notes. Although he "strongly encourages" you to read the text before class, it's not really necessary...IF you have taken good notes. He covers things quickly, so become good friends with someone in the class so you can compare notes and study together. Not your "bird" course.
Dr. Leightner is a very knowledgeable and passionate professor. He teaches to make his students understand what is happening in the world. His lectures are interesting. If you take the time to learn his economic models and graphs, it is an easy class. Daily attendance and note-taking is crucial. He seemed fair in terms of grading.
It is true that this class is tough and requires students to have a passion for learning the material. Dr. Leightner is very intelligent and he explains any question asked to his best ability. He is passionate about the subjects he teaches. Take very good notes and study groups will help a lot.
Professor Leightner is a very hard professor. However, he is very passionate about what he teaches and knows his material very well. Probably one of the best professors I have ever had. Just because he was hard, does not mean he wasnt good.
Extremely challenging class! Dr. Leightner nearly pushed me to my breaking point a few times. Much of this class involves understanding economic models and concepts, then using this knowledge to work through scenarios. This is also how his tests worked as well. I struggled to make a C, but nonetheless, this was a very rewarding and enjoyable class.
Great teacher, not an easy, you have really study hard to pass. If you want an easy "A" do not take his class. He usually mentions everything that will be on his test and quizzes. We had 2 quizzes, 2 tests, and the final. You need to know how to shift the graphs for the tests, worth about 60% of grade.
Dr. Leightner is a very intelligent man and expects a lot for an entry level course. It was very clear to me that other students either clearly understood the material or were totally lost. If you understand the economic models, it's highly interesting! I felt like I learnt a lot and really enjoyed his class!
Learned a lot from Leightner's class. You can either come or not, but missing meant you had to do two more projects than if you came to all of them. It seemed like you either "got it" or you didn't. He was very clear in his expectations and explanations, though, and it really boiled down to whether or not you understood the basics in the end.
Do not take this GPA assassin! Nothing is clearly posted in his syllabus regarding how he grades, it is 100% subjective. Your grade is your grade and it can not be compared to anything else, including an answer key. He says he wants you to learn economics because it is important, but what he really wants to do is prove to you how stupid you are
Dr. Leightner is a very enthusiastic professor who truly wants you to learn the material, however for an entry level course... his expectations are unrealistic. The tests and quizzes are difficult with a strict grader behind it, Read, study, it will be the hardest grade you ever worked for, and you may not pass even then.
Mandatory project if you miss more than two days of class
This class was very challenging, but I enjoyed it. You can NOT miss class. He uses every minute of class time toward his lectures & I didn't find the supplementary material to be very helpful. If you take good lecture, practice your graphs & ask questions then you should be fine. Dr. Leightner has wonderful stories & truly wants students to learn.
I took Dr. Leightner jointly with another professor for a Breaking Boundaries course as required by the Honors Program. He taught the economics portion of the curriculum. As a teacher, he is extremely knowledgeable, enjoys teaching, and knows how to use his gift of storytelling to provide vivid examples of the material. He can be arrogant at times.
Hardest class I have taken so far... but the most I have learned from any class. He is a brilliant man but extremely intimidating. Come to class!!!! Ask questions. Take good notes. Study. You will do fine and learn so much! Worth it! Also learn some info about China before and win brownie points!
Do not miss class!!!!! Very passionate and caring professor. Really wants to make sure you learn. Class seems intimidating at times, but if you take good notes and study, you will be fine. Practice your graphs. I learned a lot in this class.
Hardest class I've taken so far. He tries to get people to do his scavenger hunt, but it's not as easy as it sounds. He spends one day teaching each graph and the graphs are 80% of the tests. He has a passion for the subject and you will learn, but it is not easy by any means.
Great class, Dr. Leightner's lectures make ECON interesting and relevant to you personally. Really enjoyed the class, just follow the class instructions and don't miss class and will be fine. Dr. Leightner tells you EXACTLY what he wants to see in his grading no tricks no surprises just do exactly what he says.
Tough grader, no extra credit, very advanced for a simple macro course....
Everyone is given the same opportunity and tests are graded fairly, although the material is tough to learn, so you need to spend a good bit of time studying.
Dr. Leightner is one of the best professors I've had, although is course is very challenging. Attending class and diligently taking notes is absolutely crucial to doing well. He will do his absolute best to make sure everyone in the room understands a concept before moving on, so don't be afraid to ask a question or five!
I learned more in Dr. Leigthner's class than in any other course throughout my college career. That said, I never missed a class and studied more for his tests and quizzes than any other. The material did not come easily to me. I had to learn every concept. However, I ended up with a 97 in the course but every tear was worth it!
He treats a basic macroeconomics course as if it was a PHD level course. Do not recommend. Takes too many points off for little things on tests and/or assignments.
worst professor ive ever had.. entirely too passionate about economics & talks to us as if were idiots & supposed to automatically know the ins & outs of econ. grades way too hard & Jesus dont be on your phone while hes lecturing he has a fit as if he pays the bill or something. worst class ive ever had glad its over damn
This class was awful. I came to every class, payed attention in class, went to tutoring 3 times a week and make 30s on all 3 tests. The projects take minimum 30 hours of work if you miss more than 2 days. Do not recommend if not required.
I studied hard for this class, went to tutoring and ended up with a C for the semester. DO NOT miss a lecture because you will fail. His tests are difficult and grades extremely hard. I am beyond estatic I finished this class and got it over with. Don't bother buying the text book, you wont use it because he teaches econ different then in the book.
This was my hardest class I have taken in college yet (however I'm just a freshman lol). Dr. Leightner taught me so much more than just basic macroeconomics. He has great lectures with stories that relate to economics and will try to get the class involved. If you want a decent grade in this class, DO THE SCAVENGER HUNT PROJECT! It saved my grade!
Respectfully he knows the material that he is teaching, but he doesn't teach it in a way that people understand. He has a major ego problem and will look down on you if you don't understand the information that is given. This is the second time that I have taken the class and trust me he didn't make the class easier. Honestly take the class online.
impossible class. do not take. way too difficult for a college class
he knows his material very well and he is very passionate about econ! however, he can be condescending if you dont understand the material and it can be discouraging to ask for help. only have 2 quizzes and 3 tests in the whole course. one extra credit assignment and mandatory analysis if you miss 2+ days. book doesnt help either
Challenging class, but he's such a fantastic professor. I would retake his course, and he literally tells you what is on the test, and it's up to you if you study or not.
Dr. Leightner is a very passionate professor. He cant resist to teach you as much as he can. Study hard for this class and you will make a great grade. Not impossible to make an A in this class.
would never take this teacher again, arrogant and does not answer questions well. i'll be taking the class elsewhere
3 tests with 3 quizzes. No makeups, mandatory attendance, if you miss class you fail. Would recommend steering away from this class unless you plan on majoring in economics.
A really great professor who cares about his students and that they actually learn the material. All tests are in person on paper. He creates new tests every term to make sure they are on current affairs. This is a tough class but one of my favorite so far.
Unless majoring in economics, don't take his class. He's very passionate about what he's teaching and will teach everything about macroeconomics, and expect you to remember all of it. You'll have 3 quizzes, 3 tests then a scavenger hunt. All of which is on paper and very harshly graded. Do it exactly how he wants and you pass, if not you fail.
Dr. Leightner is good at what he does but he is a very tough grader. You need to study hard for this class in order to pass. attendance is mandatory and just know his class is really rigorous.
Nice guy but every test feels like a written exam with the only answer being whatever is in his mind at the time.
It is challenging but rewarding. This is not an "easy A" class—you will have to work hard and earn your grade. Here are some tips to help you: Be Prepared to Study Read the Textbook Never Miss Class Do the Scavenger Hunt Project Practice Drawing Graphs Utilize the Embedded Tutor Ask Questions during class and his office hours
Was doing well, but dropped this class because it made me miserable. He has an embedded tutor, but trying to find an available time was impossible since everyone needed help. He's rude & not helpful. Prides himself on having clear criteria but is actually not clear at all. Test answers have to be what he said word for word. Avoid him if possible.
He knows his stuff and requires a lot out of you as a student, but I think if you put in the effort this class is passable. I aimed for a C but ended up passing his class with an A! His lectures were probably the best part about his class, extremely interesting and I learned a lot. Don't miss a class, record his lectures, and study. You will pass.
Many students withdrew from his class. He rushes through lectures, ridicules questions, and makes snarky remarks. He does not consider that for many this is our first exposure to economics. His graphs and board drawings are sloppy and confusing, but you're supposed to follow along or else. Truly the worst professor I've had in my academic journey.
Professor Leightner was a very interesting lecturer. His test though are extremely hard, I would have to study for weeks in advance to even have a shot at a passing grade. If you cannot commit enough time to this course, DO NOT take him. His course is extremely time consuming and was extremely hard to juggle with my other high level courses.
He is very smart and funny. However, he sometimes doesn't make any sense during lectures because he expects you to already know what he's talking about. He sometimes gets annoyed at people asking for clarification. His exams are hard but if you go to tutoring and do the scavenger hunt you'll be fine. He tells you exactly whats on the exam
