Don't take him if you need to take calc b/c you won;t learn anything.
materials (notes, etc..) available online + he actually TEACHES well!
This guy is a great teacher don't bash him if you're just another slacker...tons of extra credit to get and if you are willing you can learn a lot from this guy he is REALLY smart
Nice teacher! Tests are not very hard if you go through the material a lot.
Okay, if you're REALLY good at math and already get it and don't need anyone to teach you, he's great I guess. . . I learned nothing! Also, he spends more time rantng about the US education system than teaching. Too much computer use, and the book SUCKS!
Good teacher...hes not hard at all if you review over his notes. I love the whole computer thing with his teaching! He has a lot of extra credit and that helps if your not that good at math. Don't be lazy or else you will fail, all it takes is some study
You must put a lot of time and effort into studying, he explains the material well, but rants about anything that bothers him about the US education system. I liked that he had lecture notes on disc and online.
Great teacher, a lot of credits to make up for the test. The tools he uses is great, no need for those math tutor. I highly recomended if you are planning to take Pre-calc, calc I & II you must take his classes and I recomend to buy the software.
If you are tired of being a slacker and want to become a student rather than just a school attendant then take his classes. You must be intelligent and a good listener. Not for children! Work required.

This guy IS a great teacher, DON'T BASH HIM if you're just another SLACKER!!!...tons of extra credit to get and if you are willing you can learn a lot from this guy, he is REALLY smart
In Lewin's words,"You have all been victims of abuse...mathematical abuse that is.You truly don't know a thing about math!" What a way to start a class...good motivation there. I haven't learned a thing, and I will get a A. easy, but annoying..
Do not take his class. He doesn't teach from the book at all like other professors. There is nothing about math on his syllabus, it just filled with instructions!
don't take him
Dr. Lewin was an amaizing teacher! I hated math all through highschool and after taking his class, i honestly enjoyed the subject. If you are willing to study you will understand the math and do well in higher classes. He gives tons of extra credit!
Great teacher, review notes and re-write them until you understand and do without looking at them, promise you'll do great! I hated math before I took his class...hard for those that don't like to work and want their tutors to do their job.
He doesn't stay on topic. His syllabus and lectures are full of instructions and opinions on how to live and be a good student which I found rather rude.He does give plenty of opportunities for extra credit. Overall he wasted my time.
Corny guy but in a good way. Makes silly jokes but in a good way. Straight to the point and no text book required. Take dat, take dat, take dat.
Corny but funny jokes. He is a bit hard to learn math from if you're used to reading a text book and memorizing equations. Lewin demands that you actually teach yourself math. It's an easy A as long as you are willing to work for it and you will learn math not formulas. Different teaching style.

HE IS THE WORST CALCULUS TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD! HAS A MAJOR ATTITUDE PROBLEM AND HE THINKS HE IS ALWAYS RIGHT. AND I HAVE HEARD FROM MANY PEOPLE THAT HE IS ****. SO YOUR CHOICE IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A RUDE AND **** TEACHER!
I absolutely do not recommend this teacher! HE IS AWFUL!
Lewin is insane. He knows Calc for sure though.
Here's this thing with Lewin; you love him or hate him. I loved him. No note taking, no books, no homework, extra credit opportunities. He makes pre-calc and calc seem so easy that a 4th grader could learn it. As long as you pay attention in class, the class requires no outside effort. Don't pay attention, you'll fail.
no book, so you have to rely on his "movies". he insists you know nothing about math because all other math teachers are stupid. the tests you have to write exactly how he does, and he insists everyone use this stupid program. very narcicistic. bit annoying really. don't take unless you are good with computers and don't need a book.
eh i dont think you should take this professor unless your a math major.. i failed with Lewin and now im retaking it with ellermayer and its sooo much easier and i understand it better. I actually went to all of the classes, tried to understand where lewin was coming from but didnt. Then again i took it for a summer course. GOOD LUCK WITH LEWIN!
Like was stated before, Proffesor Lewin is either loved or hated. He gives you the option of heqaring the lecture at your own leisure becaue he records all of his classes both visually and audibley. Overall a pretty easy class and the grading cureve is bar none. A=85+ B=70+ C=55+ D=40+ Cheers mate
I absolutely loved Dr. Lewin! Very nice - goes off subject w/ stories, but very funny! dedicated to his students, and encourages everyone to email him w/ problems and he will help you work them; he even gives out his home phone #! All u have to do is show up, pay attention and show ur trying w/ an occasional email. if he sees ur trying ur in!
Take this teacher for precalc, you dont have to buy a book cause he records his lessons on a cd that you watch, very helpful and not attendance policy
Great teacher! Explains every detail. Gives plenty of extra credit. He wants you to succeed.
um.. very horrible prof. he wasn't the best. i was a great great math student and then i tool lewin and failed. definitely do NOT recommend lewin, what so ever.
I could write a 50000 word essay on why Lewin sucks at teaching, but I won't. Just take my word, he F*CK*NG SUCKS.
Hard class. This teacher requires essay answers for a math class!! Also, he counts off if you dont space your work properly and if you write more than one problem across the page. Dont take this prof!
O goodness. AVOID THIS TEACHER. Three tests..one in two months into semester...one two weeks before course ends..then final. Only one extra credit. No book but cd's. Instead of solving problems I had to write paragraphs on how to do math problems. he doesnt care if you fail. AT ALL. I didnt take the final because I was already failing.
Dont take him. He doesnt let you take your own notes, and he expects you to out of the blue learn how to do math in a completly different way than anyone else teaches it. His software isnt mac compatable and isnt even well made, he rambles all class. Grades tests very odd. Dont even bother taking him.
The worst teacher I ever had in my entire life!!! The most difficult part was to listen to this idiot, he is insane, and the worst part he thinks he knows better. If you don't want to waste your time don't take his class. Exam was easy, plenty of problems to choose from, but he makes everything sound so complicated during his classes! I hated him!!
He is the worst teacher (if you even want to call him that) I have ever had in my life. He presents his material as though his students are all math professors. The tests (pre-calc) are in ESSAY FORM! What kind of math professor does that? I would strongly encourage students not to take him ever, even if he's a last resort, avoid him at all costs.
WORST professor i have ever had! It is an easy A but if you need to learn stuff for a calculus class in the future this is not the class for you. Software not compatible with MACs and like previously stated all test must be "gramatically correct" as he says! Terrible class!!
I have never done well in math and considering that Dr. Lewin didn't allow note taking, I figured I was toast this go around as well. But his teaching is wonderful to me, and he's a very fair grader on his tests. He really prepares you for other math classes if you will use the skills he teaches you (ie using grammar to express yourself on tests).
I've taken more than 2 classes w/ Lewin. If you want to understand the material (not just get a grade and get out), this is your professor. He's picky about language, but for good reason. His examples & HW are SO well motivated things read like a story. A professor of this caliber at KSU? If I never took his classes I wouldn't have believed it.
this is the best teacher you are going to have in college. he is the best. he will help you no mater what. he will not just teach you yo do math but to be a better student. all you need is a 85 to get an A in his class.
I have always loved math, I don't doubt Lewin's methods may work for some students, but not for me, and many others I'm sure. Not being able to take notes RUINED my experience AND my grade. I don't need someone telling me how to act, and I certainly shouldn't have to write in grammatically correct sentences to answer my math problems.LEARNED NADA!
He is extremely annoying and unprofessional, the worst math teacher I ever had and I LOVE math. I got A, tests were easy, but I haven't learnt anything. He probably sincerely believes he has a mission and the best methods but he is actually ignorant and worthless as a professor. If some people hate math it's because of teachers like this one.
I thought he was excellent! I guess it's either love or hate with him. I ran into some people on campus that told me they had bad experiences in his classes, and I couldn't believe it. I personally liked his teaching style. He is not one who suffers fools gladly, but he will definitely meet you halfway if you're putting the effort into it.
Dr. Lewin is without a doubt one of the best professors at KSU. His teaching style takes a little getting used to but if you listen and follow instructions you will Ace his class with ease and learn a lot along the way. he really makes math as easy and entertaining as math can get. His passion for the subject is outstanding.
Knowledgeable and caring professor. Had no problem helping me skip calc II. Also, while some students complain about his essay-style tests, I think it is a successful way to integrate calculus with everyday life as much as can be done. Besides, you're college students. If you can't handle reading a few sentences...then you need to give up.
He turned out to be a fair teacher. It takes a while to get used to him but he helps you out alot. He cares about his students and thier understanding of the course. I did bad on all the test in the class because i didnt get him at first but he passed me with an A becuase he allows you to prove yourself on the final
He is a horrible professor, no use of calculators.... and must explain the reasoning behind answers on the test. he is rude and very sarcastic, not a good professor at all!
Prof Lewin knows his stuff and I enjoyed his class. He made math make sense. You need to study the material to make an A. You can score above a 100 on the tests, so there is an oppertunity to bring up you grades. No use of calculators though but he doesnt use numbers you cant easily solve on your own. I would suggest taking him if you enjoy math. H
By far the best math professor I have ever had. He will actually explain what the math means, rather than memorizing formulas. If you actually want to learn something, take Lewin. He is quite funny, if you are able to understand non-American wit (and a bit of sarasm). If you try at all, you will do very well. He makes it very easy for you.
Terrible teacher. Math has always been an easy and interesting subject for me but Lewin made me hate math. He teaches behind a computer the entire time and its hard to learn math from him. Advise: take another teacher
RRRUUUNNNNN!!!! RUN AS FAST AS U CAN!!!!
Can't take notes during class, all I'm gonna say. He definitely knows his stuff, but he is one of the worst professors I've had.
I really enjoyed his class. If you like math, take him!!
Let's just say I would NEVER take a class with him as the professor again.
I have to agree with some people here. Dr.Lewin does make math make sense.
One of the worst college experiences of my life. I would NEVER recommend his style of teaching to anyone. Can't take notes AT ALL, he's a total prima donna and unless you like sitting in front of a computer screen for hours trying to pick important points from his long-winded speeches, bad puns and math jokes he records every lecture, STAY AWAY.
Dr. Lewin teaches math how it should be taught. He teaches you how math works and not to memorize formulas but rather how to derive them. I would take him again in a minute. Come to class, get the cd, and do the problems he assigns and you will make an A. Read his page and his survival guide. Best math teacher I have ever had, he makes math easy
Professor Lewin is a great professor, and unlike other professors I have had.. he can actually teach. I hate the way he grades so carefully (like misusing the equal sign), but you can't really complain if an 85 or higher is considered an A. I would recommend him if you actually want to learn math.
The WORST teacher I have EVER had. This method of teaching is the worst i have ever encountered and I really do not see why he is still allowed to teach at Kennesaw. No help was offered when a student asked, you were simply instructed to "phone" him, which was a strange and not to mention creepy response. RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN!!
I enjoy taking this class I have a better understanding of maths, if you follow his instructions you should do well. This is college and if you expect everything class to be a walk in the park then you are in for a rude awakening. I would take this professor again. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!!!!!
If you think this professor is the "WORST" ever, then you're probably a pretty bad student. He has all the credibility he needs to teach this material by the method he does. The most impacting professor I've come across.
Lewin is a true COLLEGE math professor. I was one of those students who thought it would be a walk in the park since I'm Math-minded; It's not that simple. If you want an A you've got to UNDERSTAND the concepts. His study guide is a replica of the exams and his grading scale is forgiving. I didn't enjoy him at the time, but I learned a Lot.
Professor Lewin is an excellent math teacher. He knows the subject matter and can teach it very well. The only problem is that he is not good at being able to keep his professional opinion separate from his personal opinions.
He is a very different teacher. Many reviews here are lower classes. If you haven't LEARNED math verbatim ie trig functions this class will tear you apart. He has lots of comp programs to help. But unless you are adamant about math or enjoy major studying this class probably is to hard for most.Math Lab Tutors couldn't solve his problems at all.
The man is full of himself. He accuses every other teacher in the world of being inadequate in comparison to himself. Granted, he is a genius, but the man cannot teach. He wouldn't help me unless I visited him at his house. And he failed me because I did not write in complete paragraph/sentence form on a pre-cal midterm. AVOID AT ALL COST!!!!!!!!!!
On a test, I used the pythagorean theorem to justify my findings on the side lengths of a right triangle. I wrote out (in sentence form as requested) my findings, and stated the theorem, a^2 + b^2 = c^2. I then worked through the problem, showing every step. When I received my test back, he had circled the entire problem and wrote, NO SUCH THEOREM!
I would not recommend him, or at least advise you have a fairly light load if you do. You dont really get alot of info out of the lecture most of it comes from re-writing the notes he gives. I would advise those with attention problems to avoid this class. He's not bad but his system is different, and cant be taken lightly, its also not for everyone
There are alot of negative reviews for Dr. Lewin on here, I will say this. You either love him or hate him, for me he was extremely helpful and he is brilliant. He has forgotten more math than most professors know. I love his programs, MYMATHLAB sucks, period. If you sit up front and listen, do what he tells you, and try you will make an A.
I had Dr. Lewin for pre-cal, cal I and cal II. He's an excellent professor. If you want an A, you have to study and make sure you understand the concepts. His philosophy of teaching is different from most professors. He doesn't teach you to memorize the formula, but actually teaches you how to derive it.
I have never had a teacher/professor like him. The material is difficult and you MUST keep up with it after every class. He is fine as a person but only accepts his way of doing things with the material. Impatient when students don't understand material. Extremely smart/knowledgeable, but only likes and responds to his way of thinking.
He is a great professor, but his style is totally different. He has a curve which makes getting a good grade possible, but you have to study the material. There's also no book, there's helpful software instead. I've taken him for Pre-calc & Im taking him for Calc I as well.
The man is ridiculous. His teaching style is atrocious. The way he repeats things constantly drove me to the point of insanity while attending the lectures. He hardly treats you like an equal, always talking down to the students as if we were Elementary school students. Read his web site for his opinion on students and judge for yourself.
It doesn't sound good when a professor disparages his departmental colleagues' teaching styles in front of students. Also, it would stand to reason that if his instructional methodology is so original; he should be tenured faculty at the University of Chicago rather than Kennesaw State. This man wants to be a big fish in a little pond.
I paniced at first at his unusual teaching style (you can't take notes) but it's pretty easy to do well if you show up for the lectures and pay attention. And he is extremely approachable and friendly. He will literally spend all day explaining something to you until you get it. TAKE HIM! Best professor I've ever had!
He is amazing! Don't listen to what some of these people say. They're just upset that you can't be a slacker through the class. If you want to actually learn and understand the math, take him. He will set you up so you do well in every math class after his. If you struggle, he will help you. 85 for an A, 70 for a B!!!
He definitely isn't the right professor for everyone. If you want to do well in his class you must use his software, because there are somethings that are on his software that he doesn't fully go over in class. I would recommend him to a math major or someone who is going to pursue higher math classes like calc 2 and beyond, but not really for ever
This guy is TERRIBLE. If you value your GPA you should RUN AWAY AS FAST AS YOU CAN. He tries to make everyone into a math major by making you explain every single problem. Doesn't matter if you have the right answer; if you don't write a full paragraph you don't get credit. If you have a class with him do yourself a favor and DROP IT IMMEDIATELY.
I loved this class! Prof Lewin does have a very different approach to teaching math however you will understand math better than you ever have before. You do have to attend class and there is some work outside of class. He is helpful if you are having trouble. His grading is beyond reasonable, A=85-100,B=70-85 and his test are very fair!
Man one of the best professor I have ever had. He has the ability to inspire you. He teaches Math in a very different way and will really get you prepared for Calculus. If you study you will do well. According to him you do not have to be a math person to well in his class. Tests are very reasonable and he makes you think.
Great teacher with a sense of humor. His grading system is unique and is very fair. His tests help you LEARN the material without making you memorize a ton of formulas. I would take him again for sure.
response to 12/06/10 posting: He does give credit in accordance to the accuracy and depth in which you explain a test question. I have received plenty of partial credit. You have a choice of material you want to explain on test. I find it quite difficult to get lower than an A. Uses his own approved material. $70 for VCT vs $200 textbook.
He is a great teacher. His grading system makes you able to recieve an A if you do the work. He doesn't give busy work. He also recognizes who works hard. I recieved an A on a test, then got sick & had to have surgery. I missed the final b/c of this & he still gave me an A. I valued his compassion.
Best teacher ever!!! You will learn so much!
Dr. Lewin is amazing! He is so extremely helpful if you ever need anything just run to his office or email him and he will get back to you. All you need is an 85 in the class to get an A. Two tests and final, if you get an A on the final, you get an A in the class. DO YOUR WORK!
If you value your GPA you should avoid him. He REQUIRES you to use scientific notebook for communications, which is extremely tedious if you have no training. your ability to use *his* software is used to assess your knowledge on the subject which will reflect how you are graded on the exams. Try Ellemeyer, Lavel, or go to Ga Tech.
I had him a couple of years back. Had to use his published books, his math programs (learn them too which wasn't easy) & he flunked me on HWK!! I asked for help on ONE Question from another student & HE FLUNKED ME. Didn't even hear me out. I lost all respect for this man.
Very knowledgeable in his teachings. If you study hard his class is passable. However, he does not treat individuals with respect. He thinks he right on everything and if you try to leave early for any reason he will yell at you. He insists that he is in charge and you will do as he says when in his classroom.
Its simple, he is brilliant. He is the only actual professor that I have had. He teaches you not to memorize but to learn and understand. If you actually want to learn and try take him for all maths. Do NOT take him if you want a lay back, lazy class.
I love Dr Lewin. He is the best math prof I have had yet. Like others said, he doesn't want you to memorize, but to understand. He is lenient on the grading scale. Points earned on quizzes are applied to your tests, which can really boost a bad test score. Not an easy class, but not hard. Treat him with a little respect, and he gives it back.
I had no trouble getting an A in his class. My only problem with him was on the day of my 2nd test, my sugar was running low (diabetic), so that affected my performance. He wrote a very sarcastic remark on the last page, implying I wasn't doing the work. On the final, I wrote enough to score 60 points (only needed 15 to get an A).
Dr.Lewin was not the math teacher that I needed. He is very funny but he was just very unclear to me. I had to withdraw from the class because I could not understand what he was saying. I'm sure he is a good teacher it just was not a good match for me.
No Book! Best teacher I have ever had in any major! He really knows his material. 85 is an A in his class. 2 tests one final that's it, but if you make an A on the final you can make an A in the class. His tests have about 80 points on them, but you only need 32 to make a 100 on the test, so you get to choose what you get tested on. Very easy A+++.
I've taken him for Pre-Cal and Calc I. I'm taking him for Calc II Next semester. I refuse to take any other professor. I enjoy his teaching style and grading scale. If you failed, it's because you didn't work on the practice problems! It's so easy to slack off in that class. You'll easily get an A if I keep up with the "HW"
You will get an A if you work on the Exam Preview. He releases the preview a week in advanced. If you failed, it's because you didn't work on the preview. PERIOD. The preview is pretty much copied and pasted onto the exam. He won't surprise you with problems he doesn't detailed solutions for on his VCT software of in lecture take home notes(CD).
I had him for both Precalc and Calc 1. This guy is great! He actually teaches math. Some people have trouble with his tests because they either don't study or they're not good at math. Nobody should complain about this prof. He offers extra credit for every test and his grading scale is great. I mean come on an 85% is an A in his class!
I love this class! He records the lectures and burns them onto a cd that you get after every class. He gives previews to the tests and if you do them you'll do great. He explains the material so you understand it, not just memorization. Definitely worth taking. He has a refreshing style of teaching.
I would go on myedu.com to check out this teacher's grade distribution. Basically 20% of the class will make an A, 20% will make an F, 16% will make a D, and 24% will withdraw. The other 20% is either a B or C. Obviously the people who gave Lewin a good rating got A's and obviously those who didin't probably failed.
He won't let you take notes during class. Basically he'll play favorites. Those who ace his exams he loves you/will help you. Those who don't, he won't even bother with you.Literally it's 50/50 either you get an A or you get an F.It's an awful class with an even worse professor.I would never take him again should have withdrew while I had the chance
I took him for Pre-calc & Calc I. I think he's a great professor. He doesn't teach you useless info, but the principals you'll need for more advanced math. An 85+ is an A. A 70+ is a B. He gives you the opportunity to make a good grade, but you have to work hard. Calculus is not easy, but I'm glad I took him for it.
In this class you will learn the theory behind math rather than how to do it and hear unrelated stories that interrupt the lesson. You will get an A or F depending on whether you spend 20+ hrs listening to his self built program drone on about theory. Classes are mandatory do not take them at night unless you are in desperate need of a nap.
Dr. Lewin has been teaching for 40+ years, so he knows what you need to move forward with more advanced courses. If you are a math major, he is definitely the one to take to prepare you. He does expect precision on tests, but that will prepare you for future classes. If you are just looking for an easy A without much work, you want someone else.
Dr. Lewin is a very good teacher. If I could have class with him again, i would just make sure that I do good in midterms because the final is much harder!
One of the worst teachers ive had. Do not take unless you already have knowlege of the course. He does not let you take notes. He makes you feel dumb if you ask questions. He doesnt use a text book. There are basically 3 grades all from test. This man is too smart for his own good and should be working not teaching. Register with caution!
Do not take unless you already study the material outside of class. He requires very exact information and will dock you for points if you cannot properly explain the problems. He also requires you to use his self-made program to learn from. If you have been doing well taking classes with MyMathLab, avoid this proffessor.
I would NOT recommend him.. He's very strict on how you take in the information and tells you that taking notes in his class isn't allowed. Instead, you have to get a recording of the day's lecture and use that. I love calculus and I have C in his class right now. A lot of proofs instead of examples so tests are hard. This class ruined my semester
Before taking this class, I was scared, as I have heard a lot of mixed reviews about Lewin. But the class itself is not so bad. Just show up, send him stuff weekly, and practice, practice, practice for some of the material. You don't have to do great on all the material, just some. If you show him you are truly trying, you will pass.
Lewin provides you with everything you need. He is willing to help you with any and all questions. Downside is that you have to learn how to use his program, but with a teacher who is there 24/7 to answer questions, who cares? Use him if you want lists of help and the lectures/notes handed to you.
Had him for Real. He's extremely strict about language of proofs, so pay attention. Gives U twice as much points on test than you need so U can pick problems ur comfortable with. Replaces lowest test with final. Extremely eager to help - email at any time of night and he responds quickly. A bit odd, but a very passionate teacher. No textbook.
doesn't allow notes, but records every lecture. super easy. you don't have to be good at math to get an A in this class. lets you make up to 200 points every test. no reason for a single person to fail. occasional quizzes that are used as bonus for the test. his jokes get old, but you're there for the course, not to be entertained.
Very hard to learn for his CD's. The Professor would not let you take notes at all. He could not relate the new learners.
No calculators and not allowed to take notes. He spends 15-20 min ranting about how bad other professors are and great he is. There is no textbook but he uses a program that crashes most of the time. I have a poor background in math but tried very hard until he counted off 15points for a misspelled word.
He comes off as a good philosopher, but not a great math teacher. He rants for most of the class about other professor's teaching methods and wants you to answer a question the same way he would. You can't use calculators, so it kind of sets you up for your next class.
Excellent Teacher and very cool, interesting way of teaching and learning math. Very good teacher to take if you're a science major as he does an excellent job breaking down the process and understanding patterns to help strengthen your basic skills for the more advanced stuff later on.
I had a hard time in his class because he counts questions wrong on the test if they are not answered the way he would answer them. He rants about high school teachers being horrible at math. You cannot use calculators or take notes and homework is not mandatory. If you are already great at math take him, if not, STAY AWAY.
Lewin is the most intelligent professor I've ever had. If you do the homework and not blow the class of you'll do well. He teaches in a way thats unique but extremely beneficial to understanding the origins of important concepts. Even if you're bad at math, the class is manageable. No homework so it's up to you to succeed. Pays off in long-run.
Avoid him if possible. Lewin's course is ridiculous because he doesn't teach math he teaches Lewin math. Unless you answer a question the exact way he would your going to get deducted on every question. And at the end of the semester he pretty much tells you he hardly even looks at your test scores he gives you what he feels you deserve.
I disliked him at the beginning of the semester b/e of his nontraditional teaching style (no textbook, can't take notes, not much graded work), but if you study VMT, watch the DVDs and ask him for help when you ned it you will get an A. ALL test material comes from VMT and lecture. Basically, if you're a real student, take Lewin.
worst math teacher ever. period.
Go over everything he tells you to study. Don't expect to pass, if you study a week before exams. only need 32 out of 60 or 80 points to get an A+ on exam. Tip: It's better to know two chapters very well, than to know a little bit of all the lecture material. Know these two topics very well, proofs/examples, and you'll get an A.
Avoid his if possible. He doesn't allow you to take notes in the class and provides you videos but he spends most of his time talking about other teachers. And on the test unless you answer the way he wants and if he does think you understands the material the way he thinks that you should, then you're going to get deducted on every question.
This professor would rather bad mouth every other teacher than actually cover the lecture material. Often times a days lecture video would be rendered almost useless by anecdotes and tangent stories of little significance (if any) to the course itself. Not a fan.
Stresses that you do not take notes, which can be beneficial to many students. His tests contain questions from the lecture and study guide. His grading is unconventional. He does not really explain why you got a problem wrong. He uses horrendous software for the extra credit assignments. He's worth taking, but know that it isn't easy.
Dude is honestly the worst. He (as mentioned about 30 times) would rather badmouth other professors and their teaching styles than admit that his lectures are hardly even relevant to the course..... avoid if you wanna pass
Absolutely the best professor that I have had! He wants his students to succeed and will help in any way possible. Records his lectures and works off of his own disk program. Thorough teaching method and ample opportunity to do well. Go to class, practice the material (no homework, but don't avoid the work), and you will do well.
Dr. Lewin is a cruel man. He makes you buy VMT, which he developed himself, and every dime goes into his pocket. He will not review materials and he will not allow notes. AVOID. AVOID. AVOID.
Absolutely the best professor that I have had! He wants his students to succeed and will do whatever he can to help. Thorough teaching method with ample opportunity to do well. Go to class, practice the material (no hw, but do not avoid the work), and you will do well. No book, but requires a disk program for mathematical writing.
Professor Lewin is a great teacher!! He provides all the material necessary for you to succeed, you just need to work for it. He makes you understand math and not just memorize formulas. He provides video lectures for each class and the VCT provides more details lectures on each topic. 2 test and one final (no calculator and no notes)
Gets off topic, doesn't allow you to take notes, makes you feel stupid if you ask a question, stubborn, makes you buy a (poorly made) program he made himself, literally only 3 grades the whole semester, and you're basically there just to watch him do problems. Avoid at all costs.
AVOID. Records all of his lectures on CD's, but goes off topic for about 40% of the class, either bad mouthing other math classesteachers or telling stories. Doesn't allow you to take notes in his class, will call you out if he sees you writing. Only 3 grades, two midterms and a final. Grades harshly if you don't answer EXACTLY how he taught it.
The material of this class is not difficult, however it is made horrendous by instructor. AVOID Only 2 exams + final. Can score above A however, unless all answers are "complete grammatical, mathematical English sentences" full credit is not received. Believes "student's notes will never be as good as his". Does not allow any writing in class.
AVOID! I like math, but what he taught was ??? He wants you to be able to write a novel on each subject. But not in your own words, in his. Better not make any mistakes, or write an equals sign without declaring it first. According to him those are UNKNOWN symbols and now the page that you have written out for one question is completely wrong.
I would NOT recommend taking this class over the summer. I ended up with an A but only after weeks of intense, non-stop studying. He is very particular about how he grades and will take off a lot of points for seemingly minor mistakes. He's nice, and help's there if you ask for it, just be prepared to work hard.
Unless you are a Mathematic Major or have a photographic memory, YOU WILL NOT DO WELL. The tests are as they say, you must know how he states every answer WORD FOR WORD or you will not receive credit. I am an all A B student but I did not pass this class. Take someone else unless you want to struggle and have no time for any other class!
The people who say he is hard are the people who don't think he gives homework. You must work for the "A" but if you do the work the test are a piece of cake. Any true university student should take him else stay away.
The "students" giving poor ratings are the ones who did not follow the professor's well laid out program and failed to do the homework. If your maturity level is still in high-school, you will not do well. This is a course for true university students. If you study for the lectures instead of studying for the tests, you will get an A.
He likes to make stupid jokes that take up class time and when he is angry at the class after grading exams, you will hear an hour long lecture about your poor performance. He has to be the most difficult professor I've ever had.
I'm warning you now. Do not take this man. Worst class I've ever taken. Having to take the class again because I got a D in his class... I even had a tutor all semester. GET OUT
He provides all material necessary to pass his class. You will have 2 Test and one final. The final will cover your lowest midterm. He will ramble alot about how other teachers don't know how to teach math. He will provide recordings of each lecture and extra recordings on the cd you will buy. Test are tough! pretty much need to memorize material
worst professor I've ever had. got a D in the class, i even had a tutor that he recommended me to..... still hardheaded professor. i'm warning you do not take lewin. its "lewins math" not calc. I'm currently in another clad 1 and it's 100 percent better.
His expectations are high and he is opinionated. "My way or the highway" kind of guy. I can't say hes a bad professor, but there are better. You shall receive no leniency as far as grading. I did horrible in the class but still came out saying, "He is not that bad".
warning! if you do not believe that you are headed to a career which requires an understanding of calculus (economics, engineering, physics, ect) then do not take this class. It is hard! HOWEVER; professor Lewin is possibly the best teacher of calc in the world. you will leave his class with a mastery of the material that you wont find elsewhere .
I thought I had a clear understanding of his class but my F says otherwise. I incorrectly wrote my answers. I studied and knew them but he just expects "correct grammar" and "complete sentences" and obviously I did that all wrong. Very smart man but unless you can learn verbatim and then regurgitate it DON'T TAKE. He can come off kind of rude.
Professor Lewin has a very peculiar teaching style independent from most other math professors. He uses his own program to teach the material. Study it verbatim. This was THE hardest class I have ever taken, and I would undoubtably take it again. It changed my study habits and outlook on school in general. You will respect and thank him in the end.
Dr Lewin is the best instructor I have had all my life. Every single thing he teaches you in class and writes down, he records and you can access it at any time. No professor ever does that!Calc 2 anywhere is hard, so get over it. I think he does more proof of stuff, great for math majors, however, he somewhat ignore the physics aspect of calculus
I am a 4.0 student and professor Lewin was the worst professor I've ever had. He laughs at you and makes you feel dumb if you ask a question, his tests are impossible and he doesn't care about passing students he cares about teaching the information in a way that will benefit you only if you're a math major. Do not take him. Terrible.
Worst math professor I've ever had. He grades his tests very hard and will count your answer wrong, even if you got it correct, just because you didn't do it "his way". If you want to become an aerospace engineer or something then he's probably good to take but other than that do not take him if you care about your GPA.
The worst professor I have had when it comes to grading. if you misplace an equal sign in your correct test answer, you get no credit. If he cannot read any part of your test answer, you get no credit. His test results are all A's or all F's for this reason. Tests are written on blank paper - no notes calculator allowed. Many failed.
He's one of those teachers that needs to retire. His lecture consists of bad mouthing other math professors or talking about his accomplishments . He doesn't allow you to take notes and wants every test answer to be written out and explained. If you get the right answer but he doesn't like the explanation, then it's wrong. Stay away! Seriously!
Spends most of the lecture badmouthing other professors & students, he never stays on topic because he's constantly making stupid irrelevant jokes that aren't funny, he gives 2 tests and a final, and God forbid you don't include a thesis statement, and a topic sentence for the MATH question, the whole problem is wrong, even if the answer is right.
The first class I ever failed. I love math but I couldn't do this for the life of me. Thought I passed the 1st exam but got a 30 or so. I didn't write my answers in the correct format. He teaches in sequential steps with words, sentences, and phrases. I prefer numbers, hence my failing the exams. No notes allowed and you have to get his software
If you don't have a strong math background, go elsewhere. He's a decent professor who cares about his students success but WILL make you work for it. His method of teaching is far different than any other professor i've encountered, and even after hours of studying, ( quite literally ) I still only made it out alive with a C.
So here is all you need to know. Do not listen to anyone who says he is easy. They do not know what they are talking about. Answer questions with exact format he uses to answer his. Formulas top to bottom with words on side or no credit period. Do not try different format with answering questions or you get 0 points, also he gives no partial credit
Dr Lewin is the BEST professor you will ever have. The people here who give him bad rating are just too lazy to do the work and follow his advice. He provides you with everything you will need to succeed, but you will have to work for it. If you ask for help, he will go out of his way to help you succeed. He is an amazing professor.
Good professor, gives you a layout of the test at least a week before it. Would definitely take him again. Makes you buy a download a program called VCT,which is essentially the textbook, it was very helpful once I figured out how to use it and you have to use it or you'll probably fail.
Dr. Lewin is a great teacher. Shows a lot of tough love, but he definitely wants his students to succeed. Come to class, pay attention, and do as he says, and you will definitely pass. You will have to work for it, but it makes it that much more rewarding.
I took Professor Lewin and enjoyed his class. He had long, informational lectures, but they helped. His homework is listening to his lectures and rewriting the problems. You won't pass without doing this and going through his study guides. I got above a 100% in the class and was exempted from the final. Only need 32 points to get a 100 on his tests
He really is an awful professor. He is very egotistical and he bad-mouths professors, the university, and everything under the sun. He is crazy, and creepy. He said things professors shouldn't say. He doesn't allow note-taking (so you just sit there and listen to him talk in monotone). I think he means well, but it was a bad experience.
He is the best math teacher I've ever had. He makes one learn and enjoy the process of learning. If you go for this class, be ready to work hard and the grade will follow.
One of the hardest professors I have ever taken. He types all of his notes online then expects you to go back through his lecture outside of class. He did not allow us to take notes, not even kidding. If you made the smallest mistakes, you would not get credit on the test. He expects you to know math theory inside and out. Do not take at all costs!
Had a 4.0 before this guys class. Awful teacher, the entire class is determined by 3 tests and all answers must be given in his exact format. You must study non-stop for a solid 2 weeks in order to get a good grade on his tests. Makes everyone use his software and download (roughly) 30 gigabytes of files over the course of the class. No notetaking
If you consider yourself to not be good at math, please hear me out. Professor Lewin is an amazing instructor. He CARES about his students. He will go far and beyond to make sure you understand the material. He will Skype you and work out problems with you when you're stuck. Listen to him, work with him and you will succeed.
I do not recommend taking his class unless you are looking to forward to hearing long stories and good at reciting information the exact same way he writes it. When I took his class I literally got half of one question right out of 70 questions. However currently I'm talking calculus this summer and it's a breeze .Went from 0.5% to 85%(new teacher)
Instead of using a textbook he made us use some $80 outdated program that only works on Windows. He also refused to let us take notes on the lectures and rambles WAY too much. Worst math professor I've ever had
Dr. Lewin teaches the course and requires that you take no notes, just pay attention. All of the lectures are recorded and that in turn becomes the notes for the day. He grades hard, no credit unless correct. This dude is brilliant, one of the most intelligent professors out there. You will work hard, but you will know this material years from now.
Professor Lewin is by far NOT supposed to be a professor. He is an incredibly smart man who should be retired after his long campaign as a mathematician. He posts his lectures online and will NOT allow you to take notes in class. He grades hard and really expects you to KNOW the math. If you put the work in, you will be rewarded. Study out of class
This was definitely one of the strangest classes I've taken so far. Lewin requires you buy and use a software that he created that's very dry. He's redundant and can be a little pretentious but overall does care about his students. I put in hardly any effort and got a high A in this class all you have to do is understand his expectations.
Anyone who talks bad about this professor is lazy. He gives you EVERYTHING! There are no surprises on tests and the quizzes are just extra points, so they can't hurt you. I didn't buy his VCT thing, only used his notes and I got an A. It's also untrue that you can't take notes in class, he just suggests that you not use them to study.
I wouldn't advise taking him UNLESS you have a computer that takes windows, if you have a Mac you are screwed because he uses his own crappy cite and on top of that its not a math class its a class about learning why you are doing the problems and on top of that the test are nothing like what we do in class its all sentences.
A true mathematician. Absolutely brilliant, and very caring teacher. He is so easy to get help from; I've emailed him at 2 in the morning and gotten a quick response to my question. If you study how he tells you to, you will get well over a 100% in the class. Best professor I've ever had.
I went back to school after being out of college for 4 years, and my first class was with Dr. Lewin. I struggled on my first exam and nearly gave up. Dr. Lewin asked me to make an appointment to come see him. He figured out why I was struggling; it was because I had never truly learned how to study math. I finished the quarter with an A.
Amazing teacher, doesn't want you to take notes in class, but be sure to take notes on the video lectures outside of class. He gives really good study guides for the tests and if he sees you're trying he'll try to give you as many points as possible on the test. An excellent professor, he will help you understand calc like no one else.
His grade is made up of 2 exams and a final counts as 2 exam grades and also will replace your lowest exam grade if the final is better. His tests are 64-105 possible points and 32 points is a 100. He teaches VERY in depth about why and how you do problems. Do not study all the material but what you're good at and study it deeply and you'll be fine
Professor Lewin was actually one of the best Professors I've had. I did not regret taking him for Calc I. If you want to truly learn the material, then you will take him. Nothing beats good ole' practicing until you understand it. Homework is not required, however, practicing the homework and mastering the concepts will be your key to success.
Definitely not an easy teacher. If you're taking the course to take a credit steer clear, but if you want to learn "Mathematics" he's probably the best for the depth you have to learn the subjects. His use of technology is peculiar for sure, but otherwise inexpensive I think its 80$ for the software and if you use mac stay away.
While Dr. Lewin clearly has a passion for mathematics, his teaching style is very different from any teacher or professor I've had before. He discourages taking notes in class and instead requires you to use his own software outside of class to take notes. Dr. Lewin is an extremely harsh grader that only accepts answers in phrasing he likes. Avoid!
Straight up Dr Lewin is the worst professor I've ever had. He is painstakingly arrogant and pretentious, to a point where it inhibits learning. He constantly tells nonsensical anecdotes and doesn't allow note taking. He makes you go to class , though he puts his lectures that you have to access through his antiquated and user unfriendly software
Professor Lewin is in my opinion a very good mathematics professor. However, his way of grading is rather harsh to say the least. He is very strict on how you give your answer and is 100% against taking notes during lecture. I would highly advise not taking him if you're simply trying to get credit and are not interested in Math at all.
He in very prideful and often takes up huge chunks of class time to talk about his past accolades or successes. He never responds to emails. He is an extremely tough grader and I would avoid taking his classes. He never posts exam grades even though your entire grade is made of exams. I wish i had more space to go off on this professor.
Great professor, but gotta work pretty hard
By far the hardest grader I have ever had. He gives tons of bonus questions on every test, and one only needs a 55 to get a C in his class. However, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS, I as a math major have had to put in more work for his class than any other class I have ever taken. He looks to take points away on tests for even the smallest mistakes. AVOID.
As someone who has always been really good at math, Professor Lewin is probably the worst professor I've ever had. He does not make any effort to teach the material as he just reads his notes off the screen. He doesn't let you take notes, and he is not interactive with his students. He only goes over the content once, so if you miss it, you miss it
Nice guy but Lewin's class was one of the worst I've ever taken. His philosophy was that a Calc 3 student should have perfect mastery over all prior math classes. Tests were derivations written in paragraph form and graded on grammar and lang. You also have to download his personal software which only works on PC. Does not allow note taking, etc.
If you study, it is easy to get good grades. He is generous in grading.
Very tough grader. He would nitpick my work and tell me that the entire answer was wrong because I used a different sign to indicate that I was multiplying (my answer was correct). Do not take this class.
Lewin is the best math prof at KSU. You will be smart af after his class. These haters just don't like writing coherent English. Just explain your reasoning on your answers. If you do, his grading is VERY generous. A85-100, B70-85.. I ended up with a 130. Final answer doesn't even matter. Its all about your logic. If you want to lvl up, get Lewin
Lewin is nice and wants you to succeed. He will let you resubmit many times and give you the final grade as you correct based on his input. He only has 2 tests plus final, but he gives so many points it's mind boggling. Possible to get 150s on tests and over 200 on the final. Only 55 needed for a C. He requires exact verbiage, so grading is tough.
Dr. Lewin leans a good lad to me. His curves are generous and has a unique English personality. Youll need (need!) Windows or VMware Horizon (iPad/Mac) for lectures. His scoring is really hard, so read feedback to see precisely what he wants. Plus if you stick with him, it may payoff and can even exempt the final! I'm taking him again for Calc III.
You are only graded on 2 midterms and a final (all open note and you have several days to do them, no Lockdown). The quizzes are for extra credit for the exams. He grades on a point scale and adds any points from the quizzes to your tests. Furthermore, an 85 is an A in this class. Provides notes/recordings after each class.
He only gave 2 tests and a final and for the first test, not a single person passed. All tests were closed notes and no calculator. No study guides were provided and when asked what would be specifically on tests 1 and 2 he provided the entire course's content.
I took this in summer so classes were 4 hours long twice a week for 8 weeks. Not the prof's fault, but do know summer courses are 2x longer. Having gotten a 4 on calc BC, he teaches very different math. he's probably 60 and learned math in the 70s. There's 4 tests in total and you need to use words to explain your work to get full credit.
Don't take this professor unless you really like math or are a math major. Grade was determined by 2 of 3 tests ONLY. Unlike other professors here he requires proofs for your answers. Gives next to no feedback on quizzes and tests, lectures are pointless to go through since his online lectures are just better.
If you enjoy the feeling of walking out of class after receiving your exam results with crippling anxiety and depression then this is the professor for you. Happy Holidays.
tests are in-person no notes, no formula sheet, no calculator (at all) If you don't know every trig identity and the entire unit circle by heart, you won't pass. Good teacher if math is part of your identity. If you don't care about math, avoid at all costs. is 80+ years old and spends at least half the lecture time telling irrelevant stories.
He is honestly a pretty good professor he is test heavy but you can pass you just have to make sure u understand and focus on lecture problems. I failed miserably my first test and didn’t do too well on my second but still overall did well. Test are out of like 60 and u need like 32 for a 100.
Don't trust the good reviews. He either made them himself or had his teacher's pet do them. He is by far the worst professor I've ever had. He actively makes his students feel like they're stupid. He even openly brags about yelling at other professors for not agreeing with his teaching methods. Emphasis on the yelling part.
Don't listen to the good reviews. He likely wrote them himself or had his teacher's pets do them. He will call the class stupid and lazy when they struggle with his test. He expects you to write paragraphs explaining the concepts according to his made-up definitions. He even brags about yelling at other professors for not agreeing with his methods.
Professor Lewin only grades off 2 midterms and a final exam. These exams are IMPOSSIBLE if you do not prepare thoroughly. Many people failed the first midterm and our class dropped from 40+ students to a little over 10 students. You will only succeed if you strive for an A+. If you are not willing to sell your soul, do not take.
Horrible professor. He teaches Calc 2 his own way and will not give you any credit if you don't say it exactly his way. Forgot I was taking a math class bc all of our exams are english heavy. Grades are based off only 3 exams extremely hard to even pass his class
I am currently taking him for the summer semester and would not recommend taking him in the summer. At all. His quizzes don't count against you, they are really only intended to be extra credit, but they are difficult. Your homework is to go home and look over the lecture notes and do the practice problems in between classes.
Grade is based off tests only. You have quizzes but counted as extra credit (Except they are HARD). Yells if you try to take notes in class. Excepts you to learn off his own ways and his own HTML horrible textbook. Even if your answer is correct but your wording isn't no points.
Jonathan Lewin is positively awful. I really consider myself a hard working and smart student, but he has made me feel nothing but worthless and idiotic while taking his Calc II class over the summer. He constantly berates, scolds us, and wastes our time. His grading is tougher than i've ever seen. Please avoid taking this class if you can.
I took him for the spring semester, his exams are the exact problems that he goes over in his lectures, you could score so many extra points from his test. He also provides a study guide for every test but for every problem, you have to use words to explain them. If you try this is an easy A tbh
It is really easy if you try to understand rather than memorize stuff. It is easy to skip because he records everything(but you will probably fail if you do), and he gives plenty of extra credit and I ended the classes with about a 117%. The exam reviews were much harder than the exams. He says some very controversial stuff but I find it funny.
If you want to be taught mathematics (ACTUAL MATHEMATICS) not that bs they give you in high school or from other lazy math professors, then take Lewin. That being said, he is a professor for math majors, engineers, or physics majors. The best math professor in the south. Taught by none other than Paul Erdos himself. You won't be disappointed
his knowledge is amazing when it comes to math. HE WILL EXPECT DOCTORATE LEVEL ANSWERS. no boxing answers, no arrows, must be proper English sentences in ur math on tests or no points. HORRIBLE grader. no cheat sheets. no calculators. Must download his softwaressss and read before class. Of my 4 ksu 2202 prof he is the worst.
An extremely annoying and pretentious teacher. Is an extremely tough grader, requires awful software for notes, and wastes so much time on useless and pointless side tangents. Avoid his class at all costs.
Do not take this professor if you just want the grade, this man actually teaches. A very funny guy too, he made all his material (free). He gets on tangents pretty often but is VERY caring. Only graded on 2 tests and the final. There's also quizzes that can only add points to the test (only need 32 points, test offers like 40-50) Do your homework.
Professor Lewin is one of if not the absolute best professors I have had at KSU. He is extremely caring and hilarious and gives students every opportunity to get help and ask questions. He is lecture heavy, his only homework is to review lecture material. He is extremely knowledgeable in math. Take him if you actually want to learn! NO ADDED COSTS!
Professor Lewin is a very enjoyable professor in that he has a very fun sense of humor and makes class very enjoyable. His material is not hard to understand, and his tests only cover a decent portion of the material rather then a large amount. However, be prepared to understand how he wants things written down as he is very harsh on that.
The amount of points available were insane. If you went to the lectures to get the bonus points from quizzes and attempted most questions on the Exams you could get an easy A. Don't have to pay for a book but you have to download ancient software. Overall a pretty enjoyable lecturer but you don't need to go as he posts all lecture videos.
he will come back , just avoid his class and you will be fine , a lot of things do not make sense with this professor , even a missing coma will get you a zero , just terrible
The toughest grader i've ever seen. Don't do it. Has his own software he makes you download for notes but the software is horrible and a pain to download. Will constantly go on tangents that have nothing to do with Calculus and also constantly puts down other professors for not teaching calculus EXACTLY his way. Expects PHD level students.
he's really good at explaining the concepts well but on the tests he expects you to write out the question exactly as he worked it out in the lectures/practice and doesn't give partial credit even if you worked it out correctly and just didn't write out a couple things. There are also3 tests in the class and you aren't allowed to use a calculator.
Amazing professor. Extremely wise and passionate. 350 words won't do him justice, but he really made me excited to learn math. There are only 3 tests but on each one you could gain more than 100% (max was 265% on the final). Also, the tests are very straightforward and not tricky. He doesn't tolerate slackers, explaining the negative reviews.
Do not take this professor. There was 3 exams (including the final) and takes points off if you don't write problems verbatim how he has them in the notes. This course literally felt like a social experiment in which the professor does everything in his power to fail his students. 350 characters is not enough. Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.
Take this professor if you actually want to learn the material and not just breeze through and get the credit for the class. All of the answers in the tests are in the notes. If you don't get an A in the class its because you are lazy. This professor made calc2 a breeze.
Be prepared to study rigorously outside of class. Professor Lewin is also a very tough grader and likes test answers in what he calls a professional manner, meaning you will use sentences to help convey your answers to math problems. He does a good job explaining basic concepts, but you are responsible for expanding and comprehending said concepts.
Prepare to put in the work - this class is no cakewalk. But if you engage with the material and use resources like Unstuck study AI, you'll walk away having genuinely learned a lot. The professor has high standards, but it's worth it.
