very knowledgeable younger gentleman. His insight to classical texts is very extensive and I feel like i've learned a lot so far. Would recommend!
great teacher. funny, engages class, very amusing. tests are very difficult, but he is a reasonable grader with essays.
his test are kinda hard and hes a hard grader but the classes are interesting.attendence is not manditory but if u dont go u have no chance of passing the tests. take the class if u like to read :)
Great and insightful teacher. Take his class on romance novels! He is very helpful and a fair grader. If you like to read and write take the class...4 tests, 3 in-class essays, presentation, and final. Reading intensive class so if you have an interest in the subject you will enjoy the reading material.
if you love to read, take this class!!!the books have good stories, and he engages his students. if you don't go to class don't expect a good grade.tests are easy as long as you take good notes.good notes=good grade. hes also funny and very intelligent
Very helpful, more than fair when grading honors essays which are ridiculously difficult. He tells you exactly whats wrong with your essays so that next time if u fix it u can get an A. He is also available to meet with before a paper is due and he will give u feedback on it
He is a super nice guy and extremely helpful if you ask for it. His discussions aren't the greatest though. And definitely not good looking.
He's VERY helpful. We go over themes and he gives textual details that are very usable on exams and essays. He tells you what he wants in essays so you can get A's. He does grade hard but if you are motivated and want to do well, your literary analysis skills will grow a lot and you'll get the grade you truly deserve. That said, there's no slacking
Dr. Mannering is incredibly helpful and really cares about his students. Out of all the honors profs, I feel that he's a semi-hard grader. He's very intelligent, knows what he is doing, and clarifies and simplifies the jumble of information that is Honors 101 so it is somewhat comprehensible. :] Take any of his classes! I highly recommend him!
We actually DISCUSSED in Honors discussion with Mannering, which is more than some of the Honors profs did; however, this often lead to some looooong awkward pauses. He is constructive for grading papers, but more harsh on the tests. Also, participation counts and he is very fair--you don't even have to talk. Just stay awake and look interested.
Dr. Mannering is one of my favorite professors at Loyola. CLST 272 is super easy with him as all the answers come straight from his lectures. If you show up to class and actively participate there is no way you won't get an A and learn a lot about a really interesting topic!
Funny in small classroom settings and a good lecturer. He's kind of a hard grader, but super easy to talk to outside of class, and he's really helpful when giving you ideas for papers or explaining topics. And he's a Ginger!
Extremely intelligent and knows it (and acts like it). Kind of arrogant, but has a pretty good sense of humor to balance it out. Like others said, extremely reading and class discussion based class. SO GO TO CLASS. Definitely teaches you how to analyze. Enjoyed it though!
Awesome professor, very elegant and proper. He lectures very well and is very witty, but also available to help. 4 easy exams (I studied the night before and got over 100 on all of them). Class is just plot summary (so are exams.) Just read the book and you'll be fine. There's lots of reading, but he is a fair grader and always offers extra credit.
LOVE Mannering! My favorite professor at Loyola so far. He's extremely clear and concise and always ready to answer your questions. Everyone I knew in this class got an A and it's not because it's an easy class, he's just a really great teacher. I'll go out of my way to take him again!
I really enjoyed having him for Honors my first semester. He honestly made me enjoy the class so much more. He was funny, extremely helpful, and made the class interesting. Recommend! Take him!
Knows what he's talking about, and the discussions are helpful. However, his discussion section was more of another lecture, with little discussion. Pay attention in class, or he'll call you out on it.
He's one of the best Honros professors I've ever had. I really like his lectures during discussion, very informative
GARAM MASALA!!
Dr. Mannering is amazing!! He is very clear and knows exactly what he is talking about. Just listen to him and you will get an A. And he's a cute red head
He is one of the best Honors discussion professors! He might seem a little scary at first but he's actually very funny and helpful :)
There are three quizzes and three exams for the different books, the Iliad, Odyssey, and Aenid. You go through each of the books and as long as you pay attention in class you will do well. He is very clear about the books and helps you to understand them.
In this class you just go over the three books. He talks about them during class. You should really pay attention to class because a lot of the stuff is on the exams. The professor is ok. He is really monotone and boring. You will definitely get annoyed with him by the end of the semester
Interesting class and professor is very clear on what is necessary for assignments or exams. Wants to see students improve and helps. Don't fall asleep in class nor skip. Participation counts
Pros: Extremely knowledgeable - from what I heard from others, I feel that he was the best discussion professor; Cons: Mannering says so much that it's hard to distinguish "important" from "T.M.I." If you're not interested in the subject matter, you will be bored and feel lost. It's what you expect for honors, but not necessarily what you want.
It was truly a privilege to take a class with this illustrious, beautiful man. He is Mensa-grade brilliant. He reeks of ivory tower academia, yes, but he is relentlessly charming! Truly a delight. 'Twould be a shame to miss out on this guy. Also, he has gorgeous cheekbones.
My favorite teacher my first year at Loyola. He can seem arrogant, but really he is just incredibly knowledgeable. If you're dumb, you're not going to enjoy a class taught by a man who knows Sophocles inside and out. But if you enjoy this kind of thing as I do, I heartily recommend Mannering. He's also got a subtle, yet wonderful sense of humor.
He's a very intelligent man. At first he seems scary and intimidating but he is incredibly funny and helpful. Gives great essay tips. He's also young, charming, and beautiful :) By far he's the best discussion professor.
This class ended up becoming my favorite class just because of Dr. Mannering. His knowledge of the classics is essential for doing well in this class, and other discussion sections always ended up asking us questions about what Dr. Mannering discussed because it was so useful. You do, however, have to work. Highly recommended! Take this section!
Dr. Mannering is definitely one of my favorite professors this semester. Yes, he can be pompous, but it makes it more entertaining. He is one of the smartest professors I have an I HIGHLY recommend his section.
Professor Mannering is one of my favorite professors at loyola. He is very sophisticated, nice and helpful!!:) There are only three exams and quizzes throughout the course and they are all from the class notes. You will learn a lot from him. Wish I could have taken another clst course with him.
Any advanced Latin class with Dr. Mannering is an amazing experience. He stresses quality over quantity and emphasizes the importance of every word. He is super helpful, nice, and understanding. He's also very witty and clever. There are 3 exams and 3 quizzes. I feel so lucky having taken him for 2 classes- take him, you won't regret it!
Dr. Mannering is intelligent, funny, and great at lecturing. He only assigns about 20-30 lines of Latin every other day, and this leaves a lot of room for discussion of ideas related to the texts in a relaxed atmosphere. I only wish I could have had him in Honors too. I highly recommend him, as he's nearly convinced me to add a Latin major.
Prof Mannering is an excellent professor for new freshmen coming into the honors program, especially those who like a challenge. He's a hard grader on the papers but he's fair and is always happy to answer questions. The one downside is that his discussions are more of a second lecture than an actual discussion.
Takes getting used to, but very fair and helpful.
He's a good teacher, and you honestly learn a lot! 3 quizzes, 3 tests. Make sure you buy the correct copies of the books or else you will struggle. You read the Iliad, The Odyssey, and the Aeneid
This is not easy, don't listen to anyone who says it is. Make sure you read before class that way you understand what he is talking about. If you didn't read prior to class, never make eye contact with him or you'll get called on and embarrassed. READ- it is a lit class. He's kind of arrogant and annoying. This class was a struggle. Don't recommend
Great professor, really interesting and knows how to get his class interested in the subject. It is very important to go to class and to do the reading otherwise your participation grade (15%) will decline greatly.
Dr. Mannering's Rhetoric class is amazing. He is an awesome instructor who clearly knows what he is doing and he is really funny and helpful. Assignments include reading, short writing assignments, in-class essays, and a final paper (NO quizzes or exams)! He also makes the material interesting. Highly recommend.
This class is absolute torture! I don't have one good thing to say about it, besides that i'm finally done with it! Don't miss class because he says stuff that will be on the exams or quizzes that you may have missed while reading. Follow his rules or he'll go out of his way to embrass you. READ! I cant stress that enough. Spare yourselves the pain
The honors program is tough regardless of your professor, but mannering is very clear, always willing to help and will make you a better writer. He is extremely intelligent but helps lead you to the conclusions instead of rambling during discussion. At first the class was overwhelming but once you're used to it, it can be enjoyable.
I took professor Mannering for CLST 271 & 272. He is an amazing professor. He's witty and charming and so incredibly knowledgeable, to the point where it's almost intimidating. Reading isn't all too mandatory if you come to class and take good notes. I haven't bought any books for 271 and haven't gotten below a 95 on the first two exams.
Quizzes and exams are pretty hard and require a lot of writing, and having a VERY good knowledge of characters and plot. You will be given a lot of blank quotes and have to state who said what (pretty hard when you have read 5+ plays). Expects a couple pages written per exam, dont take if you write slow. Must go to class and read for at least a C.
I had Dr. Mannering for HONR D101 and he was great. Many of the other professors are potentially unclear with what they are talking about in their lectures, but Dr. Mannering does a good job at expanding on what they are talking about so you really understand. While he is a tougher grader, it really helped my essays overall.
Dr. Mannering is an excellent choice for an Honors 101 discussion leader. His discussions add to the lectures and are invaluable when preparing for the tests. Though he is a tough grader, he wants to see all his students succeed in this course. Definitely take his section
Despite his intimidating demeanor, Dr. Mannering has an very effective teaching method. He is extremely intelligent and has a unique approach to interpreting the texts. While he is a bit zealous with the red pen, his office hours are very helpful. He genuinely cares about his students and about classical literature. Overall, highly recommended.
Mannering is a good discussion leader for this course. He's a pretty tough paper grader, but is very helpful when writing papers. Definitely take advantage of his office hours the week before a paper to discuss your thesis and he'll give you a lot of help. He also explains the works really well and prepares you for the exam really well. Take him!
Dr. Mannering is an amazing professor. He really loves what he is teaching and is a genius. He is one of the best Honors professors but also is one of the best professors. Go to his office hours and you will learn so much about life in general. He is definitely a hard grader but all honors professors are. You will learn so much from him.
Dr. Mannering is an AMAZING honors professor. If you have the option to take him for discussion, DO IT! There is no other Honors professor that compares to him. Even if you think he is hard on you, you will be grateful for all the time and effort he puts in trying to make you a stronger student.
Dr. Mannering is the smartest professor I have had the pleasure of knowing. He assign 2 quizzes and 2 critical analyses which are critical for points. He often remembers names well, and knows who shows up and who doesn't which reflects in the participation grade. He is an amazing professor, would recommend if you work hard and really want to learn
Incredible lecturer, also really hot. Especially with his glasses.
Might be slightly intimidating, but genuinely cares about his students. Fast paced lecture, but chock full of useful information.
Dr. Mannering makes the class very interesting and ultimately cares about his students. If you're someone who likes to participate in class then I'd recommend taking this course. It takes effort to get a B in this class, but working hard is a good thing and ultimately will make you a better student / human in the future.
Professor Mannering is one of the best professors at Loyola. He is an amazing lecturer and is super passionate. Although he can be sassy at times, he does give good feedback on your papers and does care about his students. I would definitely take his class again!
Dr. Mannering is an amazing professor. If you care about your performance, he will too. You have to exercise effort. Sit in the front and be present in class. The quizzes can be tough as they are pretty specific but if you read and pay attention in class it is do-able. I struggled at the beginning but he knew I cared and I improved my grade.
Honestly, my favorite professor this year. Gives so much good feedback on your papers and really cares about how you do. He puts in a lot of time for his students. Also rather funny. Made class very enjoyable but also informative. Really knows his stuff.
All easy professors are rated good, but if a professor makes you work hard for an A and still rated this good, it should tell you something. If you really want to learn, take him.
Prof Mannering is very passionate about tragedy and other literature. He does assume that you have read all the books assigned, and assumes you know some basic knowledge about greek and roman tragedy. Quizzes were harder than the tests (pulled out specific quotes you have to match to characters). One "project" at the end--acting. Overall, he was ok
Quizzes are quotes from the books, and you have to determine the addresser/addressee. On midterm+final theres 2 parts, where the second part is written essay questions. Which isn't terrible, but the first part is stuff that you have to know from the readings. Pretty sure he hated me since he gave me a C+ when I should have gotten a better grade....
My favorite lecturer of all of honors! Will try to take him again
Best lecturer in honors! I'll definitely take a class with him again.
His lectures are super insightful and interesting yES
Dr. Mannering is a great professor. He's a funny guy and really gets us to think about the text in class. I won't lie, this class is pretty difficult but we never write 5 paragraph essays in this class and his written assignments are always no more than 1 page ! As long as you participate and read you will do well in this class
Amazing professor who really cares and unpacks the hidden significance of everything you read. Write down what he says in class and read as the quiz are exact quotes from the novels. He is a hard, passionate, knowledgable, unbias teacher and is worth it due to his passion and attempt on his part to bring about an "anagoris" in his students.
Mannering really cares about his students. He is always prepared to meet outside of class to go over a thesis and he gives amazing lectures that cover all the topics you'll need. That being said he will NOT give easy A's. He wants you to work and earn your letter grade. He is a tough grader but helps you become a better writer. Really funny too.
One of the best professors I have ever had. He gives amazing lectures on how to interpret literature and makes it easy to understand, papers that are never longer than a page, and tests that are based exactly on his lectures and the material that was covered in class. It's a lot of hard work, but he makes the oldy moldy classics fun!
Don't take this dude. His personality is very condescending, and his tests/quizs are impossible. Essays are fine.
Avoid at all costs. UCLR 110 is suppose to be a really easy class, and he makes it so difficult. I was prioritizing his class over my others due to the amount of information we have to know from each of the books we read. You have to know EVERYTHING from the books or else you'll do terrible in the class.
Dr. Mannering is a great public speaker so his lectures just amazing. Definitely take active notes in his class because he is detail oriented but his exams are very fair. Also he has an English accent, not that it matters. Read the novels rather than sparknotes. Hes accessible outside class but he prepares you well in class. Good recommendation.
I LOVE THIS MAN!! I've had a tough time with english in HS, but Jonathan showed me that I am actually really good at writing and showed me how to love the Classics! He is a tough grader, but for a reason. My writing improved so much because he really knows what he's talking about. TAKE MANNERING FOR HONORS 11/10 RECOMMEND!!
Mannering is an excellent professor who makes you look at epics carefully. If you are an upperclassmen looking for an easy Tier 2 Lit elective, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. There are daily readings that are imperative to do well on the 3 quizzes and 3 written exams for the Iliad, Odyssey, and Aeneid. Take if willing to work for A or to learn a lot.
I took Mannering's romance novels class. We read a total of 7 books, some were very short and the longest one was about 170 pages. He is a great lecturer and really makes you think about the meaning of the text. His exams are somewhat hard but a very doable A. Definitely read the books and take good notes. I truly enjoyed him and recommend him.
Professor Mannering can seem intimidating at first, but I can't stress enough how important it is to see him outside of class regarding papers. He is very helpful, and will guide your thesis to what he is looking for - it is hard to get an A without doing this. He prepares you very well for exams, and somewhat stresses class participation.
I LOVE HIM SO MUCH!!!!!!!
TAKE MANNERING BEST LECTURER! This man is hilarious and so helpful when it comes to writing your Essays. His feedback is very valuable and he truly wants you to succeed. He doesn't require attendance but you definitely don't want miss one of his discussions. Get ready for inside jokes, his impressions of other people, and overall a good time.
Dr. Mannering is a very good professor. He cares a lot about his students and his lectures are all about the books that were read for hw. Because of this, he expects a lot from us and is a tough grader. 2 short writing assignments, a midterm, cumulative final and 2 quizzes. Quizzes are hard because they are character matching with direct quotes.
I genuinely love Mannering. He comes off very intimidating but cares about your understanding of the texts in the scope of the class and in general. The biggest things with him are A) actually read the books and B) go to his office hours! He gives your very constructively criticism that will greatly impact your grade. Hes one of honorss Best.
I picked Mannering for honors discussion at random and it was the best thing I've ever done. He's intimidating at first, but the more you warm up to him, the better he is as a professor. His lectures are super dense and fast-paced but so informative and in discussion he really goes in-depth to answer student questions to the best of his ability.
Take him if you want to feel stupid. He grades like his students go to Harvard, and you MUST know every single detail about every single book you read.
all tests and assignments are cumulative, has very high standards, tests are made up of quotes from the book so you basically have to memorize the book, easy content but he makes the assignments and tests more difficult than needed, nice guy sometimes
Mannering is tough - there's no doubt about that - but not in a bad way. The class was difficult but Mannering clearly explained everything and laid out exactly what he expected of us. I left the class with a much better grip on my grammar skills and a new appreciation for Martial.
Mannering is a great professor. He's entertaining and sarcastic. His class is a lot of fun if you pay attention He literally gives you everything you need for tests and writing assignments IN CLASS! He's funny and makes Greek Mythology entertaining. He made me a better writer and makes you work. DON'T TAKE IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ!!!!!!
Mannering is an amazing professor who is very passionate about what he does. His quizzes are pretty difficult and require you to have a deep understanding of the readings. His exams require deep understanding as well. He is a tough grader on the 2 papers you write. He pushes you to critically think and is very funny. He makes you work for an A.
Mannering was my favorite teachers and I'll definitely miss his class. Dude's hilarious. The class really isn't hard at all if you just do the work and make sure to go to most of the lectures. The first test was a little hard but after that they all follow the same format so you know what to expect. Alot of reading. Good class overall :)
I've actually learned a lot from his class -- though it was difficult at first to comprehend (how to write an essay or how the exam would be like), it taught me a lot of skills that would actually be helpful. I've actually enjoyed the assignments he has given, and he truly cares about his students.
This class was a lot of work and very hard. The lectures help clear up the readings that you MUST do prior to class. Professor Mannering is very condescending and cares a lot about participation. The quizzes are very hard and are made for someone who has read the book multiple times. Exams are easier but are hard to finish in time. Essays are fine.
No idea how his ratings are so high. Mannering brags that his UCLR classes are harder than other professors. His quizzes and exams are ridiculous. If your reading comprehension skills are not a 10, do not take him. I sought help through office hours and he essentially ignored my concerns and questioned my decision of attended Loyola. Do not do it.
His tests are so hard - pay attention to everything he says/writes in class, READ and make sure you take notes. I loved his sense of humor. He made you really work for your grade so don't think you can slack for a day. He knew what he was talking about and I enjoyed class (though I don't think I've had to put so much effort into a class before)
Cares a lot about his students. It was my hardest class of the semester, but I learned a lot and it helped improve my work ethic. Way harder than other UCLR, but Dr. Mannering is very kind and accessible. He really wants you to learn.
This is my second time taking Mannering's class if that says anything. He makes you read about 7 books, the longest being about 300ish pages (done over break). If you don't want to read, don't take it. He makes you a better writer and his lectures are a lot of fun! If you're looking to actually learn, take this class.
He comes off as super pretentious but he's actually pretty goofy. He has high expectations but offers extra office hours when we have papers due. He also looks like Linguini from the Pixar hit Ratatouille.
Dr. Mannering is one of the smartest, funniest professors I have ever had. He is not going to give you an easy A by any means, but the constructive feedback he gives is absolutely amazing. If you actually want to become an all around better student and not just get an easy A, take Mannering for discussion!! Such an amazing guy!!
Dr. Mannering is super smart and funny. He was a little intimidating and first, but once I got used to his personality, classes were really fun! He pushes everyone to learn and dig deeper into what they're reading. He left tons of feedback on the essays that I wrote for him, which really helped me to improve. Overall, an amazing professor!
Dr. Mannering is an amazing professor who really knows how to ensure that students grow by providing them with feedback that is clear and concise. While the class was heavy on reading, it was a course about novels, and I didn't fee; that it was too much for me. Mannering cares about students and is a fantastic professor to take for Classics credit.
Mannering is crazy intelligent. He is very passionate and knows his stuff. Be ready to work and read outside of class. Come prepared and get your work done on time. He respects his students and values the ones that really try. I loved his class and really want to take him again.
This Prof is awful not just as a Prof, but also as a person. During the midst of a personal crisis I didnt perform well on the first exam and he took me aside not once, but twice to tell me to my face that I should quit his course, the program, and that Im not cut out for academia. This man should not be a teacher and will not care for you at all
Mannering is one of the best honors professors @ Loyola. He's an intimidating figure but he really cares about his students and their success. As a lecturer, he goes slow and is very passionate about his topics. As a discussion leader, he's funny, helpful, and incredibly smart. I always enjoy his class and he has really made me a better writer.
Mannering is a great professor and knows his stuff but Jesus christ does he make things harder than they have to be. There are 2 exams, 2 quote quizzes, 2 small essays (2 pgs) and then small add ins for participation. His class is messy as you think you should be graded on analyzing literature but in reality you are just memorizing worthless things
Dr Mannering is so smart and is an incredible teacher. He cares a lot about his students, and isn't half as scary as he might seem when you first meet him. I've learned more in his class than probably any other class in my life. The class is tough but he makes it clear what he expects in our essays and it's a perfectly manageable workload.
Dr. Mannering was my favorite parts about Honors. It is devastating to see that they are letting go of his insightful and funny personality from the IHP. Dr. Mannering truly changed my life for the better. His class made me a better writer and better thinker. His discussion was run very well and, while he sometimes went over time, he was engaging.
I loved Dr. Mannering as a lecturer. He certainly lectures at a collegiate pace, but I think its great that hes the first lecturer for the IHP. His lectures are organized, have a visual, end are easy to follow! Its sad to to see the Honors Program let him go because, in my opinion, he is the best part of honors. I feel bad for future students.
Wouldn't recommend for a tier 1 lit professor. He means well and his lectures are fairly interesting but he expects a lot from his students and the class is time-consuming. in order to do well on quizzes and exams it feels like you practically need to memorize every word of the books
Mannering is a challenge, but in a good way. This is one class you need to take notes in: the quizzes and tests are very specific and he expects a lot from his students. As a person he is pretty cool, and you can get an A if you pay attention and work for it. Not a lot of homework, and he goes over the reading in class.
Mannering is a good professor, BUT DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN EASY A!!!!!!! If I was an English major, I would have enjoyed the class, but I only took the class because it's required. You have to attend every class and read everything if you want a good grade.
He expects a lot out of a 1 level core class. He expects you to basically memorize the books. He's funny and he gives advice when you ask for it, but he can be a bit condescending. Quizzes and exams are difficult for no reason, you have to really pay attention in class, can't skip otherwise you won't know what's going on. Not an easy class.
Mannering is very meticulous in his grading and expects you to be up to speed with the readings. He doesn't take attendance, but if you pay attention and take good notes, you'll be fine. There's 25 discussion posts and several papers. I'm a STEM major so this class was very new for me and I wasn't a huge fan of him at first, but he's a great prof.
Mannering is very serious about his job. At one point in the semester, half my class was failing the level 100 class. He said that he wants our money to go towards something important so he was going to be difficult. Overall, go to class, listen, and do the readings. Quizzes and midterms are very difficult if you didn't listen.
Definitely too much difficulty for a 100 core class. You only are graded on 2 quizzes 2 assignments and 2 exams. You can't really study which is what sucks, you have to really remember what you read and pay close attention to every lecture. I feel like i was putting a good amount of effort in but not doing stellar on the quizzes/exams will tank u.
Easily of the best teachers here at Loyola. 2 exams, 2 quizzes, a recitation, and a final. All extremely similar format with translation, parsing, and scansion. Overall, incredibly caring if you get past the intimidating scholarly exterior. I would recommend Dr. Mannering to anyone ready for a fulfilling challenge and an enriching class experience
Beware, this professor is NOT a nice guy. If you have any questions about assignments, always expect a disrespectful and rude answer in return. If you ask where to find something on the class page, he will sigh very loudly, and call you out for not paying attention in front of the whole class. Very mean!!
Mannering is a rude, arrogant, and disrespectful professor. His mentality in life and towards his students is, he made it and you haven't (even though "making it" has only made him a useless professor in life). Class is complete garbage, graded harshly on only a few things. He does not like nor support the higher ups of him. Overall don't take him!
His UCLR class is more about memorization than actually analyzing literature. Mannering is rude and seems not to care about his students. If you ask a question to clarify you are met with a rude and mocking tone. Half of the class has a C or below and he tries to blame it on us. I have never had a teacher who is so arrogant.
Mannering is one of the few teachers at Loyola that actually cares about what he is teaching. His quizzes are not that hard (no matter what he says) and as long as you study, it's easy to pass. The people who complain about him are just people who don't want to put any effort in class. He has an attitude, but usually, it's funny and not serious.
Save yourself and do not take this class. It is not about understanding the reading but more about memorizing what he says during lectures because his ego needs to be fulfilled. He has no shame in publicly embarrassing and shaming his students. Take UCLR with literally anyyyone else. This professor is a waste of time and not worth it.
This class is 100% for individuals who like to memorize the events and characters of a novel, rather than actually analyze them on a deeper level and utilize critical thinking. He's very condescending and rude, his class is unreasonably difficult (graded by few things), and he doesn't teach you any useful skills. Save yourself the time wasted.
I took the greek and roman lit class, and you have to buy, physically buy, 7 books. He has weekly assignments and you need to be up-to-date with reading because he looks for classroom participation. He's a really hard grader and he can be really stubborn when it comes to the analysis of the books we read. He's fairly nice, just a hard grader.
Mannering is tough but I put the effort in and it payed off. If you take this class be prepared to read a ton; in order to succeed on quizzes you'll likely have to read the text 2-4 times as you literally have to memorize the lines. But, this class made me a much better reader, I gained more knowledge in this class than any others this semester.
Mannering is intimidating at first, but TRUST me he loosens up as the semester goes on. Yes, his quizzes are tough, but if you do the reading it's fine. Remember, it's a literature class, so yes you should expect to read quite a bit. If you show you care and meet with him or talk after class, he'll notice and appriciate it.
He has 2 quizzes that count towards a lot of your grade and that the average grade was an F on, he pulls random quotes from the plays and makes you say who said them. He only has 2 tests that are worth a lot an he is a very tough grader. This is a very hard class to pass unless you want to indepthly read all of the plays and remember the stories.
If I could've taken another teacher I would have. 2 quizzes, 2 exams and 2 in class assignments. quizzes are fill in the blank quotes from 5 books read in class with no word bank. The fact that people dropped an english class is all you need to know. He made remarks about how low our grades were and laughed about it. sad to see a him at loyola
I took Dr. Mannering in the spring of 2022. I don't like English at all but I loved his class. He's funny, engaging and his lectures are incredibly in-depth. I learned to appreciate classics because of him and I learned a lot of Latin! This class is a lot of work, and if you want an easy course this isn't for you.
I took UCLR100C in my first semester as a transfer student at Loyola, and by all accounts, Mannerings was supposed to be the toughest. It was a breeze for me! He might be strict during the first couple of weeks, but he loosens over time. Lectures are engaging, though he rarely uses any presentations. Active notetaking is highly encouraged!
Although it wasn't an easy A, I loved Mannering's class. His quizzes are pretty difficult, but everything else you're graded on is easy as long as you're paying attention during his lectures and following along with the material.
He's a nice guy, not so great of a professor. I hated this class with everything in me. There are tests every week of the material that you learn THAT WEEK. We barely have time to learn.
Oh boy where do I start. This man has the biggest superiority complex. He's incredibly rude when someone asks a question. Expects you to reread the entire book before a quiz. Do yourself a favor and take anyone else.
Mannering is the worst professor I've ever had. He legitimately expects you to memorize every character, every quote, and every event in 6 books he requires to complete quizzes for a 100 level. Lectures the books in his own words. This class has done absolutely nothing for my degree or career path but hurt my timeline for 3 credits. DO NOT TAKE HIM
I had to take the W when I tell you this was the most ridiculous class I have ever taken omg, it was horrible! On a two-part exam (he makes all his exams two parts) for the same material that I read thoroughly, I got a 98, and then the second half got a 50. Do not take this class!
Idk why he has a 5 tbh because he is so boring, cringe, and hard class to pass. He is a nice guy and was caring when I had to drop; but I don't think he understands that we are forced to take this course. He acts as if it's so important and wants us to prioritize his class. Don't take.
This class was difficult for me but made me a better student. If you want an easy A, this isnt the class. There is a lot of reading. Mannering is tough but he loosens up towards the end of the semester was cracking me up in class. Be ready from the beginning and dont expect a walk in the park but dont be afraid to ask for help. I learned alot.
I don't understand the hate. If you want an easy A English class don't take classics-- t's obviously more involved. I really enjoyed the texts and lectures. He's very knowledgeable, a little snarky at times but he's overqualified to teach freshmen and it shows. Quizzes and papers were easy if you pay even a little bit attention. TAKE NOTES!
Mannering is... an interesting guy. I enjoy his lectures, and he's clearly knowledgable and cares about the material. That said, he is unable to give his students help outside of what worked for him or adapt his teaching style to the needs of his students. He's great in the smaller class setting, but you have to stay on his good side at all time.
Professor clearly knows what he's talking about in terms of the course material but is lacking in basic human respect. Never had a professor pull me aside to throw my quiz grade (C) in my face as a "gotcha" moment to say I wasn't taking the class seriously. As a first year in my first semester, he did not even offer support to do better in class.
By far the worst class and worst professor I have ever taken. His class is ridiculously hard for a Core class. Class is 90% based on tests and quizzes which have low averages. He knows students struggle in his class and seems to get a kick out of making our lives difficult. He has an obsession with the epics. DO NOT TAKE!
Do not take this professor unless you love literature or your major is classics. He has lectures that are descriptive but his quizzes and exams are EXTREMELY detailed and hard. For a core class it is not worth the work and all the exams are cumulative. Just do not take him!!
This class is no walk in the park, but using resources like unstuckstudy alongside the textbook and active participation can really help. The professor is tough but loosens up over time.
Tough class be ready to put in the work. The professor is obviously very intelligent in classics so he takes the class seriously even if its a 100 level. Read the books, pay attention to his lectures, take notes, and participate in class you'll do fine and he'll notice you're trying. He notices good work ethic and attendance so show up to class.
I loved Dr. Mannerings class! I have never enjoyed any type of English class in any grade before this one. He gives great feedback on all papers and tests, using his feedback I showed great improvement throughout the semester. His class is very engaging and it's clear he cares about his students. Would highly recommend taking him!
As a STEM major with a full semester schedule, this class was tough. He has quite the character, but he means well by it. The best advice I could give is to be prepared to read and take notes during his lectures, and you'll be just fine. It was a challenge, but I enjoyed it. He is very entertaining and cares about his students.
Don't miss class and note every line/passage he discusses or mentions in class + the vocab, themes, analysis, etc. The exams and quote id quizzes are based on what's covered in lecture and much easier if you have detailed notes and passages to prepare with. NOTES ARE KEY. Challenging but interesting class. Passionate prof, I really like epics now.
mannering is really funny but for a 100 level class, do not recommend. you have to read 6 books, only 2 papers, 2 quizzes, and the midterms. unless youre a classics major, this is a waste of time. quizzes are very difficult. if you dont take notes and skip class, you are screwed.
Literally the worst quiz of my life. Unnecessarily hard and he doesn't feel the need to change the format cause he likes to watch us struggle, in fact, brags about how hard his tests are. I didn't even want to see the exams. Dropped without hesitation. Take Classical Tragedy if you hate yourself.
Dr. Mannering is a phenomenal professor. If you are at all interested in mythology I would recommend taking a class with him. His passion for classics is inspiring. That being said, classics is not easy. Get ready to show up to class and take good notes, but if you can do that and pay attention you should have no problem.
Dr. Mannering is a great professor, but you need to be active and present in the coursework to pass. The most important thing is to GO TO CLASS!!!! Dr. Mannering will point out key lines, plot points, themes, history, and vocab that will appear on quizzes and tests that are vital to your grade.
VERY confused how his rating is so high. 3 quizzes, 2 exams, 1 performance, 2 in-class writing assignments. Quizzes+exams are impossible to do well on. Each quiz is on 4 plays (each 1000+ lines) & expects you to memorize the speaker/addressee/what play. Exams are 4 parts & insanely long for only 50 minutes. He's Squidward come to life. SAVE URSELF!
Lots of tears. Lots of stress. Just don't do it. This class was genuinely harder than any STEM course I've taken.
Dr. Mannering is a great professor! However, while attendance isn't necessary, you will NOT do well if you don't go to class. If you read the plays, go to lecture, and make note of which quotes he talks about—you will do fine. The people who say he's impossible are simply those who didn't go to class and failed as a result (in my opinion at least)
I can not stress enough how Dr. Mannering is one of my favorite professors at Loyola. I took this course for core requirements but it was my favorite class throughout the semester. Super interesting and the way he teaches it will keep you engaged. Two quizzes, a midterm, a final, and one project. Study and you'll be fine! He's a great professor!
Dr. Mannering is an incredible professor, and I highly recommend taking his class for any CLST course. While attendance is not mandatory, GO TO CLASS!!!! All the information you need will be discussed during the lecture. He is very upfront about tests and quizzes, so you will not be left in the dark content-wise. Give the classics a try! :)
I wanted to enjoy this class more-- as it is interesting I wont argue that. However I feel like it is overly ambitious. There is 4 in class writing assignments, 4 exams and multiple books you're expected to have memorized for these exams. There are no slides or study guides. If you're a full time student that just needs UCLR II.. don't take this
this class is insanely hard, while the professor is extremely passionate about his work, the class demands so much. memorization of whole novels, translation of latin and greek, and more are needed in his 50 min exams/writing assignments. the class is interesting, but if you have a heavy workload DONT take this class!
