He's a bitter little imp. He believes that if it wasn't for him this university would give out A's like lollipops. Run!
Lectures run in circles. Makes the most interesting periods in History seem boring.

Don't listen to the other people who posted. While Marwil can be a bit trying at times, he is a satisfactory instructor. He is very lucid and astute, albeit a little too old fashioned for most.
This Prof. belives in grade inflation, so he belives a good grade is a C. So almost everyone gets C+. If you are forced to take this class, take a GSI led discussion section.
Interesting lectures.
He is difficult, but at the same time, I learned a lot from his class. When you talk to him out of class, he's a nice guy.
I enjoyed him enormously. The only problem I had with his class had to do with a GSI and not the prof himself. You will work. He is old-school. I think that's a good thing. I got an A.
At times in this class I felt like I was taking a Literature course, and not a History course. Marwil's lectures were unsatisfactory, and his expectations for tests were unrealistic for a 100 level Course. I got a B.
The worst class I have ever taken
Not only one of the worst professors that I have come into contact with, but also one of the worst human beings. He is a truly vile individual. For your own sake stay away!!!
Very strict grader on tests and papers. Lectures are pretty boring even for a history major like myself. Avoid this professor unless you want your GPA to drop.
Marwil is tough, but challenging. He's a surly individual but as a teacher he does a great job. I took two classes with him and found I learned and remembered a lot from those classes.
People complain about his classes because in order to get a good grade one must actually earn it. I'm not sure what exactly is old-school about that - this university needs more professors like him. This was a great class and I really learned a lot from this man and this course.
Good class, boring lectures. He loves to make you read....tons.
Ungodly grading, take this class pass/fail if you can. Very interesting, good lectures but be ready to read a ton.
An excellent teacher. As others noted, a tough grader, but he takes time to give constructive criticism. Very nice outside the classroom, as well. Knowledgeable, hard-working, always prepared.
Marwil's lectures were extremely boring. He doesn't utilize multimedia in a useful way. My GSI, Marnie Anderson, was awful. She made me feel incompetent. The grading for this class was extremely difficult. There is no guideline for the final exam. Just study everything and be blown away!!
He told me i was clumsy and unitelligible!
Grades way to hard for an entry level class. Smart guy but quite unreasonable and intimidating, especially for a freshman.
This was the best class I have ever taken. Prof. Marwil was extremely demanding, but that is why were at the U of M. I learned so much from this class and it is what pushed me to go into history. Do the readings and go to lecture, and you will do fine.
I enjoyed the class but I think a lot of his assertions have a liberal bias and are flawed. People who complain about workload and tough grading are being whiners
How can you teach 300 years of European hist in 1 semester. This, although claiming to be a historian, is obviously isnt too smart. How can student learn anything about any topic when its only brushed upon and in the most general way possible. Grades too damn hard too. Very intimidating to freshmen
don't ever go to office hours they do not help
The class was interesting and he can actually be a funny guy, but his sense of humor is not for everyone. Lots of reading. Grades very hard.
The class is amazing, ive never had more interesting lectures!

Marwil's lectures were absolutely amazing and thought-provoking. I highly recommend this class, especially to someone who hasn't taken a University history course yet.
Class is very difficult on the grading scale, and reading is definitely on the high end. However, the readings are usually intersting, especially the books chosen for the class. Lectures can be long and tedious, definitely a nap needed for 1 1/2 hours. But still interesting.
Class is very informational and interesting. There is reading on a daily basis but it is managable. Marwil knows his material and expresses this in lectures and during films that he shows. Highly recommended.
marwil knows his subject very well. i highly recommend this class. i feel the reading is managable and interesting. marwil works it into lecture also. 2 outside (hollywood) films required, both entertaining. great use of media sources during lecture. extremely intelligent professor. if you go to lecture and do the readings its an easy A
The class is pretty interesting, although the grading is pretty difficult. Marwil has a lot of interesting ideas and is very intelligent, but even that makes his lectures seem a bit tedious. There is HEAVY reading, most of which is interesting but not always. Don't expect an "A" unless you're a really good writer--it makes up 80% of your grade.
This class was excellent, yes there's a lot of reading, and it is crucial that you know them very well for the tests. He is a tough grader, but you will learn a lot, and its interesting too. He is very intelligent, but the 90 minute lecture can give you headaches. I didn't think much of the movies either, to be honest. The books are excellent.
This class stunk. I hated it and was disappoint, cause I was really looking forward to it.
Marwill is an excellent instructor. Knows what he is talking about. The material is pretty interesting too. The only thing is that the tests, papers are graded really hard.
Marwil is a classic professor whom I will remember fondly for a long time. The class is interesting but it is difficult. I'd still recommend it, but don't expect an A.
Marwil is the man! Some people can't handle the classic lecture style, but I loved it! Try going to his office hours and arguing politics with him sometime...
Marwil grades extremely hard and his lectures tend to be very abstract. His personality is very prickly and he does not try to hide any of his personal beliefs.
You will not learn much about history in this class. A's are practically impossible and B's are rare. I would wait a semester until another professor is teaching this course.
marwil's lectures are long and drawn out, but very interesting. GSI's are extremely helpful. Lots of reading(50-100 pages a night). Good books. Take advantage of the class. B is average-A is impossible.
Lucid, well-informed, even-handed, outspoken, old school, and the list goes on. These adjectives can only begin to describe the character of Prof. Marwil. If you're tired of the long-winded, existential BS 90 percent of the Professors at this school spew forth for an entire semester, take a Marwil class. You'll get your money's worth...
He is very helpful, but sometimes his assignments are unclear. Doesn't strike me as an approachable person.
History197 seminar is not typical seminar. No guarenteed A. Very demanding. I spend more of my time on this class than any other. Marwill will fail students. Papers are common, most recent was to be 10 pages. A lot of reading. Interesting class, but all based on discussion & papers. If you are bad at participating in class do not take this seminar.
Terrible lecturer, very boring, goes on a tangent, has a very american centric viewpoint on everything, i took the course on modern history and instead learned more about american history, heavy reading involved i would discourage you from taking this teacher
really hard grader. feels like no one should get A's. Assignments are vague. Though, classes are interesting and he is really smart, but he knows it. lots of reading, but most of it is interesting.
Professor Marwil is a superhero. He is hysterical and genuinely interested in his subject. You will not get bored.
Prf. Marwil is a fantastic lecturer. He is concise, to-the point and refreshingly objective. As a history major, I would certianly reccomend taking this or any of his classes.
This class was one of the few so far during my academic career at Michigan that I didn't mind going to. Professor Marwil is very wise, and to the point. I learned so much, and he makes me think outside the class. His lecture style is very traditional, and the exams are on the hard side, but TAKE THIS CLASS!!
I spent more time on this 3 credit seminar than I did on any other, larger, more important class. Gets a very decided opinion of your writing right from the start and determines your grade then and there. Lots of writing assignments with little actual help available for your writing. Really interesting class, but frustrating grading policy!
If you're going to enjoy this professor's lectures, then you better not have a short attention span and have plenty of rest. He knows his stuff, but lec's can be boring if you're not awake. Exams are broad and cover a lot of ground, so if you're not an expert in the subject matter yourself, don't expect an A or even a high B.
He grades very hard but I would say that his lectures are more interesting than any other class I have ever taken. One of the few classes that I go to with out any dread at all.
His lectures are dreadfully boring and sometimes I feel like he doesnt really know what he's talking about - but over all a really great professor to interact with outside of class.
Very old-class lecturer. In all, I enjoyed attending his lectures and seeing him at Office hours because of the different perceptions he had about such an interesting topic. Do not expect a great grade though - take it if you enjoy the topic.
He just lectures and shows film clips, no power point or anything, but if you listen he's really interesting
I really enjoyed this class. I appreciated Professor Marwil's ability to actually teach the class something without clear bias and anti-American rhetoric. I feel like I acually learned something, unlike in most other classes at U of M. If you are reading this, thank you Professor Marwil!
this was the first time Marwil taught this class on 9/11. it was interesting but most of the class was based on the opinions of those in the class. it was totally a discussion based class but if you cannot analyze literature you might have issues with the class. Marwil picked his favorites early on and there were 2 essay exams and a paper only
I took this class my second semester senior yr. biggest mistake ever. he taught us nothing and yet expected us to know everything. horrible teaching style and grading. DO NOT take a class with him.
Marwil's lectures were both informative and fascinating. He brought a unique perspective to the topic of war that really made you think. Though the class was challenging (the tests and paper were graded very hard), it was thought-provoking and definitely worth my time.
Obvious the guy is passionate about what he does. Monotone lecturer but what he's saying is really interesting and will help you on the exam. I took the class for fun and was glad I did. However, there's a lot of reading that can be very tedious so be warned. Overall an interesting course if you like European history.
useless person, lives in the 15th century doesnt know whats going on around him, clumsy as hell. doesnt even know CTOOLS and gives an A practically to none and only if you read and write like a historian
Passionate lectures. He is pretty intense/intimidating. He makes you view the world from another way. I enjoyed this class a lot, but I would take it pass fail. Not an easy class by any means unless you write like a historian. The reading load is a bit much (6 books and course pack stuff), but I found the work worth it. Good class overall.
Very helpful outside of class. Some of his lectures are the most interesting topics I've ever learned. Some are necessary for the course and not as interesting. But how many classes do you get to watch scenes from Platoon in? Great class, everyone should take it.
Absolutely loved this class. The lectures are extremely informative and encourage you to challenge your own beliefs about war. I actually preferred not having powerpoint slides during lectures, as I find them distracting - there exists a need to just focus on them and copy everything down instead of listening.
i saw him for history advising and instead of encouraging me to go into this field, he questioned my interest in history and my acceptance into this school. i have no desire to take any other classes with this man.
Strap in and strap up if you're taking a course with Marwil. The man is a superb teacher, but he does not screw around, and he makes that clear from the very beginning. If you can't handle blunt and honest criticism, find another course. If you don't put in the work or attend class you will fail. Try him for advising, he's excellent for that too.
Ok this guy should not be teaching a first-year seminar. For all the other seminars if you show up you get an A, but Marwil will only give you an A if you read and write like a historian (extremely boringly). Hes interesting to listen to definitely, but not really useful pertaining to the papers you have to write. Only take him if your a hist major
If you are taking a Marwil class, you better have time to read every single book you are assigned. He gave us a 5 question pop quiz on a book I didn't have time to read, and he decided it would count for half of a letter grade. You also better be prepared to write essays worthy of a history textbook if you want an A on a paper...good luck
great, intelligent professor, but very blunt and doesn't really care what you think about him. he's there to impart his knowledge and tell you if he thinks you're stupid or not. demands a lot from his students, but since this was a class specifically for history majors, that might not be too suprising
If you have an innocent love for history, please do not take a class with this man. If you are hoping to raise your GPA, please do not take a class with this man. Long-winded, mean, and selfish. He simply does not deserve your tuition money. Look elsewhere.
He is an extremely intelligent and blunt man with a lot of experience. He makes you think very deep and hard and will be the first to tell you if your statement was ridiculous. He is more than willing to help on class topics, but be prepared to receive less than an A if you don't write like a historian. Also, expect a book a week reading load.
First day of class told us no laptops or any electronic devices would be allowed; notes must be on paper- my kind of guy. Lectures are long, but interesting. If you don't like to pay attention, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Lots of reading, 1 paper, 2 exams of essays. Marwil is brilliant.
If you love American History, you should take this class. Marwil is a genius, though he is very blunt. There is a lot of reading, but I found it very interesting. Its a fairly difficult class, but Marwil is a great teacher and if you love history you will enjoy it. Do the readings and go to the lectures and you'll do well
Marwil is incredibly interesting and fun. He isn't easy, so don't take this class if you want a blowoff class, but you will learn A LOT. I have no idea what I'm going to get in his class, but I really don't care because I feel that what he has taught gave me a new appreciation for history and a new perspective on many historical events.
The lectures were very interesting and thought provoking, as well as the GSI led discussions. This is a heavy reading class. Expect at least a few hours of reading per week. This is also a writing intensive class, the midterm and final were both pure essay and there is also one research paper due. It is very difficult to get an A.
This should not be labeled a 200-level class for the amount of reading/writing. Requires at least 6 books plus a 200 pg course pack. Not for someone with slight interest in the subject - you're going to be reading at least a few hours a week. Tough grader who takes himself way too seriously. He'll randomly come to discussion too so be ready for it
Do not take a class taught by Jonathon Marwil! This was probably the worst class I ever took. There was a very heavy reading load every single week. Lecture was extremely boring. Marwil had no powerpoint or lecture aids. It was disorganized and very hard to follow. Discussion GSIs were horrible. Self-proclaimed hardest grader in history department.
This was a very difficult class. There were a lot of readings each week and your grade is only based on four things. The essays are graded very difficultly so don't take this class if you're looking for an easy A. Overall, this was an interesting class.
I took this class as a freshman in the Fall and the workload kicked me in the stomach. He knew a lot about the subject, but seemed slightly aloof when I went to his office hours. He doesn't use PPT, tons of mediocre reading, and your entire grade is based on 2 essay exams, a research paper, and your discussion grade. Take at your own risk.
Great reading selections but poor execution of class. Given no direction toward what to study for his exams. As a history major, I expected to write historical arguments but that was not the case. Most of the class was discussion so issues were raised but never satisfyingly resolved or understood.Grades on his opinion only not strength of argument
Yes, this class was challenging, but it was by far my favorite class I've taken at Michigan. It's important to stay engaged and take good notes during lecture because he doesn't use Powerpoint. Expect a lot of reading, but you really only need to know a few examples for the exams.
STAY FAR, FAR AWAY FROM HISTORY 266. YOU WILL NOT GET AN A. The lectures were great, but his grading is absolute ludicrous. I'm an A to B+ only student, and the grades i received did not mirror this at all. His goal in the class is to 'make you work for it' aka make your life an absolute living hell, even when you are working extremely hard.
Professor Marwil is a brilliant man. His opinions may not be conventional, but they are all extremely informed. I felt honored to be in his presence. This class may have a lot of reading, but if you take the time to do it it will enrich your life and how you see the United States in the world and at home.
This class is honestly downright pathetically organized and will leave even the brightest of students irritable and feeling lost at any given moment. No organization of material, no lecture slides, and office hours are almost useless. My advice: never take any of his classes. You will regret it.
Very interesting and thought provoking class. I cried more than once while watching the documentaries. You don't have to write like a historian, just like a college student. I am not a history major and I really enjoyed this course, though the readings do take a while to get through
Not an easy class but a fantastic class. Marwil is a hard personality for everyone to love. His arguments are interesting, he usually has good GSIs working for him, the readings are interesting. I really enjoyed this class. It will challenge you. He will not hold your hand and yes you have to work for your grade. Welcome to college.
Everyone is correct when they say he grades tough and makes you read, but believe that it is absolutely worth it! His lectures make you look at history in such a new and thought expanding way. Take the class, work hard, and get the most rewarding B+ ever.
Professor Marwil is brilliant and the information he presents is extremely interesting. You better pay attention or you will be lost in this class. He does ramble on at times, but if you stay focused you can get a lot out of this class. There are a lot of readings, but as long as you do most of them you can easily participate in discussion.
There is a ton of reading in this class. Luckily, the final and paper aren't based off of his lectures, so do the reading, and you'll pass.
Probably one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. As an engineer, I needed a humanities class that I could get an easy A in... definitely not the case here. I participated regularly in class and read all of the books assigned, yet I found myself doing terrible on the papers and getting no help during office hours. STEER CLEAR OF THIS CLASS.
Marwil is a very tough grader. The class overall is really interesting and he really makes you work. He says C is average and you have to blow him away to get an A. His exams are essays and he doesn't really give you much guidance and says to study everything (which is a lot). The matieral is good but only take this class if you're willing to work.
If you're willing to put in the effort, you'll do well in the class and learn a whole ton in the process. Marwil knows his subject and gives all sorts of interesting information, though you'll often need to read the textbook to get the "big picture", as he often focuses on smaller details. Be ready to participate in discussion, it was 30% for us!
This class was a lot of work but so worth it. Professor Marwil is an amazing lecturer and picked primary sources that were relevant and interesting. He also loved engaging with students.
The whole class is based off of lectures and readings. Nothing is online. Dr. Marwil's lectures are actually really interesting and engaging. The gsi does all the grading though
Marwil takes pride in being a very tough grader. I took the class because the topic seemed very interesting to me (F'17 was 20th C. American Wars). Marwil is a thought-provoking and well-spoken, albeit rambling, lecturer. I regret not taking it pass/fail. GSI was cool this semester. Discussion section participation 20%, 2 tests + 1 paper 80%
If you dont go to lecture, you miss all the information because he literally posts ZERO content anywhere. Mater of fact, he didnt even have a canvas page this year. Hes a very old school lecturer, no PowerPoints, a little rude.
Personally, I think professor Marwil is a great teacher. He is extremely knowledgable in the subject and inspires his students to look at History in a way that I have never experienced before. There is a lot of reading to do for this class (one course pack plus 3 books) but it is definitely manageable if you put in the time and effort.
I really enjoyed this class, but that's because I like history and think the topic is interesting. Marwil is a cool prof, but if you're not into history/wars don't take the class, it won't be worth your time.
Really enjoyed the class. Lectures and discussions were interesting. A lot reading for a three credit course with a course pack and four books but they were all interesting and relevant to the course. Tests are essay questions that are open-ended and requires knowledge of the readings and lectures. His grading could be a little opaque though.
Unquestionably one of the most knowledgeable professors on campus. Great at facilitating discussion and provoking debate. Old-fashioned, though, in the sense that youre entirely on your own. Doesnt post anything online, vague about requirements for assignments, and a brutal grader. Take if you want to learn something, not if you like your GPA.
Professor Marwil is super old school -- doesn't let you use computers during lecture but honestly I didn't mind. At times the lectures could get boring but for the most part they were interesting and easy to follow (the only thing is, he doesn't use slides or any form of online class page, so if you don't go to class you won't know what's going on)
Professor Marwil demands a lot from his students. If you care about your grade, don't take this course. With that said, the course was incredibly interesting and I learned an insane amount. He is incredibly knowledgeable, and the course material is nuanced and unique.
I was excited to take this class, but Marwil made it so boring and difficult that it kind of ruined it for me. He is very harsh and hard to please with his grading. I think he enjoys making students feel stupid. Wouldnt recommend this class.
I looked forward to taking this class, but Marwil made it extremely difficult. His essay prompts were hard to understand and he was a harsh grader. He often made students feel stupid and was disrespectful during discussions.
It's very clear Professor Marwil knows his stuff. Unfortunately this doesn't translate into him being the best instructor... His course required more readings than most upper-level lit classes at UofM, and grading almost entirely depended on just one essay & two exams. He was very harsh in grading these assignments without being clear/constructive.
Professor Marwil is exemplary. He can be intense, but if you put in the effort, he will respect you. If you can't take criticism, take a different class. But if you want to actually improve your writing, he is the right professor for you.
Probably the worst professor I've had. - Lectures rarely match up with core course material and are instead on his own interests - Required all 25+ students have mics on during zoom - Held class on university-wide wellness day - Gives 1 sentence comments on 4 page essays - Rude/condescending in lecture and office hours Take ANY other class.
Picks on you if you disagree & denies if you point out a (frequent) factual error. Lectures rambling boring & cynical. 3 papers are almost the whole grade; only 1 optional prompt out of 7 was specifically about lecture. No grade system but C is average. Always frowns/grimaces. Discussion w/ GSI excellent, but not related to lecture at all. Avoid.
He is just honestly not that nice and calls out students all the time during class. Grades his papers very hard and is extremely particular despite having very unclear prompts. Avoid.
Professor Marwil gave us three essays in total for this class. He did not use Canvas at all except to put the movies for this film class for us to watch. He did not give any feedback on the papers and all of my classmates have said the same thing. The prompts are wordy and confusing, and he will give you a C or B without any explanation behind it.
Professor Marwil, despite his obvious knowledge and passion for what he teaches, is just not equipped to teach college students: - requires all students to have mic on during Zoom class - doesn't post lectures on Canvas - gives extremely brief and harsh essay feedback without constructive criticism - will often call out/mock students during
I liked him
Get ready to cry. I took this class thinking it would be super cool and interesting, but it was emotionally painful. Essays are graded without any serious criticism, just random comments questioning the word choice. Only likes certain writing styles and will penalize you for using another. Try to avoid taking this class if possible.
This professor should be avoided at all costs. Unclear expectations for essays, and expect biting criticism for deviating. He has berated all of his students at one point or another, and has made racist and sexist comments. His lectures are not at all engaging. He should not be working in education, much less be on your schedule this semester.
The class was graded off of three papers and there was barely any feedback. Attendance was absolutely mandatory. For a discussion based class, he would often cut off students and rudely mock their beliefs. Avoid this professor if possible!
Professor Marwil is old school. He does not use canvas or slides during his classes. For this class, he assigned 3 short readings (100 pages) and most of the instruction came from printed handouts he would bring to class (poems, essays, speech) and films. He is interesting and loves discussion. He does not berate you, he plays the devil's advocate.
I would reccomend you take it, but beware of a few things. He does not use Canvas, so you can't track your grades or assignments as much. He can be a tough grader but his feedback is always "attack the question," for papers. Nothing is cumulative you take 3 papers just to get the grade on your final, but participation helps boost your grade too.
Marwil doesn't do Canvas or online grades, doesn't provide rubrics for essays, and the class is graded on participation and three essays. The average grade is a B, with a couple As and a couple Cs per class. He's a really interesting man and I always found the class engaging though, and I would recommend as long as you're a strong writer.
Worst teacher I've ever had, incredibly boring lectures. Such a shame because I like this subject, yet I dreaded going to class everyday. Harsh grader and when you ask for feedback on writing/succeeding in class he rambles on about a random subject. Avoid at all costs.
Professor Marwil knows what he is talking about, but he is not the best at applying it to his assignments and exams. His feedback is vague and hard to understand, so I had no idea how to study for this class or improve my essays. I would avoid this class if possible because he is a harsh grader and doesn't really respect his students.
He made inappropriate and unprofessional comments all semester. The grade is based on participation and essays. Participation opportunities are not given equally and there was no rubric or explanation for his grading. His comments were often unhelpful or illegible. Asking for clarification resulted in rude responses. DO NOT TAKE
I took two of the courses he offered over twenty five years ago. He is the most memorable professor I had. Twenty five years later, I still think about his lectures. I only offer him the highest praise.
