He taught the fat metabolism portion. He is an excellent professor by all accounts. Very knowledgeable. Excellent at communicating concepts. He is absolutely hilarious, and has the BEST sweaters ever. Having him was a good way to end the course. "Cholestrols not that bad... look at it!"
Knows his stuff and manages to make some dry material pretty interesting. He's a really funny guy and always has a joke.
He's the funniest prof ever! His class quite interesting, and he replies to your e-mails the next day. He's a great prof and I highly recommend him! I like this course more because of him and he explains things well too. His notes are all written so in case you didn't pay attention, you can still read his notes afterwards!
Funny prof! He brought over a million pens to class, and yet there were only a couple that seemed to make him happy! HE'S GOT A NOSE RING, TOO. Makes me laugh...He's the type of person that is very knowledgable, yet you just want to pat him on the head and tell him to simmer. Very good class, overall.
Not a bad prof. He was funny and interesting, but the course was a little dry right in the middle...
Great prof!!! He's clear, he's concise, his notes are almost all you need to complete the learning objectives and succeed in this class. Totally agree with the sweaters comments, Dr. Parrish is really amusing...Squalene..and his squeaky voice. I'd take any Biochemistry class he teaches in the future.
Very kind professor, he clearly enjoys teaching and is respectful of his students; he has his funny moments too. The midterms/final are very tricky at times.
Very enthusiastic prof. Very interesting and incredibly helpful. I would most definitely take his classes again.
he was i gues funny but slightly strange. His notes are complete except lots of the time u have to write notes in class (or on scans in his site which is good) however, he gives more notes than needed but overall, he's pretty good
awesome
He's a little eccentric, but he's an awesome prof. Had him for 200 as well and thought he was superb:). Good notes, easy to understand, very clear, very helpful online & in person.
Enthusiastic if eccentric. Seems to enjoy teaching the class more than students enjoy taking it, which leads to some awkward moments in class as he waits for answers that won't come.
Enthusiastic but presents material in extremely disorganized manner. Literally need to know your material inside out, as his final dropped my mark over 13%. Expectations on what to know are unclear (material does not coincide with lecture objectives) which makes it very difficult to study for his tests. Gives copious amounts of details in notes.
Such a sweet guy, loves biochemistry obviously. The course itself is pure memorization, and tests are tricky. Don't bother reading the textbook, everything you need to know is in the notes. And make sure to do the practice questions...exams, especially the midterm were very similar!
Easy midterm, HARD final. This course is just a whole lot of memorization. Don't leave everything until the night before like I did. Dr. Parrish is a really nice guy and he tries to make biochem interesting, but I didn't like his exams. I didn't like his notes, either.
Awesome prof. Writes out the notes with you, so everything is there. The exams were difficult but not bad, you just need to know the relations between things. He Definitely made the class fun.
Dr. Parrish is a fantastic prof.
make biochemistry 200 class enjoyable and interesting.Like the way he trapped himself with his own wordy explainations.(so cute^0^)Extremely helpful if you e-mail him question.
He's such a wonderful prof! I would likely have hated Biochem if it weren't for him. Very funny, doesn't take himself seriously, and if you sit up close, you can see his nose ring! Lol. But seriously, if you're going to take Bioch200, take it with him!
He was really helpful and very straight forward in his teachings, even if you miss a class, he posts what he wrote in class on webct. Recommend him over any other bioch200 prof.
He posts everything covered in class online and is really helpful when responding to questions students have. However, I'm not a big fan of his notes (powerpoint and written); the powerpoint slides are often just pictures from the text or pictures of random animals. Lots of memorization!
Excellent prof! Highly recommend for Biochem 200. Easy to understand, entertaining, great notes. He posts EVERYTHING on the internet, even notes written in class. The only downside was the midterms were very fair, but the class averages were high (although the class is not on the curve) so he made final hard to balance it out
Def. not as good as Dr. Wright, wished they would have let her teach the whole course. He is way too random and all over the place!! Jumps around and doesn't explain things thoroughly. Also doesn't cover everything you need to know, ie parts of metabolic regulation showed up on the exam that he said we didn't need to know, or jut vaguely mentioned!
He is alright. Although Dr. Wright is way better. He goes very fast, and is random. Hard to keep up with him. Also cutoffs for exams that he says are always false, with several questions manage to sneek into the test without him ever teaching the concepts behind them. He is funny, sometimes, and always has that smile going on...
Yeah agreed, he's a step down from Dr Wright as a lecturer. Kinda confusing. He is however, pretty entertaining, and a nice guy. I really appreciate his prompt and very clearly explained emails/web ct discussion board answers to questions we post though! (Why can't be be that thourough/clear when he's teaching?) On a side note- NOSERING!
I got 96 on the first midterm, with the material having all been taught by Dr Wright. Second midterm, after Dr Parrish started teaching the class, I got 74. And I studied a hell of a lot harder for his because of the fact that you cannot get good notes from him! Uggh. Helpful in person, email & on web ct though which is appreciated.
Dr. Parrish is a truly great man. Ignore the naysayers and Dr. Wright-acolytes. This man will change the way you relate to biology.
I enjoyed his sense of humor. He is a creature, like me! He was my favorite.
Awesome prof. He's very approachable and helpful. He's easy to find outside class and is very humorous. I like bioch because of him and Dr. Wright. He has a casual side to him which make you feel that "no question is a dumb question" =)
He's an awesome prof! He's very helpful, approachable and easy to find outside of class. It's really helpful to study by answering the objectives being that they are somewhat specific. He's very humorous and makes bioch quite enjoyable. His casualness makes it seem like "there's no such thing as a dumb question" =)
he was funny or tries to be. His exams are fair and he does seem nice...
He was nice and funny. Maybe not as clear as i would have liked because he talked while writing down notes but only paraphrased what he said so some details i sometimes missed. he does post overhead notes online though. He's still a good prof
I did not find Dr. Parrish to be as easy to understand and as clear as Dr. Wright, and I wish she had taught the whole course. Overall not bad and the exams were not that bad.
An entertaining and occasionally funny lecturer (the lolrus/bukkit reference made my day). Presents the information in such a way as to make it completely understandable. I learned a ton from him. Is approachable as well. Love the nose ring. :)
Horrible professor. Spends way to much time explaining concepts he does not test and flys through the material he does test. His notes are terrible, but if you go through and answer all the LO from the textbook you will do fine. He is not funny either. Oh and take the nose ring out.
I'm not someone to frequently go to class but I actually made all of his lectures because they didnt bore me to death. I found his notes to flow well together (if your there to listen to the main point of the slide). Tests were fair and not long, and practice questions lead you in the right direction.
Funny and animated when teaching, and very helpful outside of class and on the discussion board. Always seemed very enthusiastic about teaching.
Awesome prof. Kept things interesting and his writing is incredibly clear. He also provides supplementary notes that he posts online in addition from the powerpoints
This being my first Biochem course I was told to expect the worst. I can without a doubt say this was one of my favorite classes in my entire degree. JP is amazing! He knows his stuff, crystal clear notes, exams are clear cut and not ambiguous, his humor will make your day! Choose no other for BIOCH!
Dr Parrish is the best professor I have had in my university career. He is very thorough and explains concepts clearly. He has a great sense of humour and had the whole class laughing out loud at least once every lecture. Studying posted learning objectives prepares you to do great on exams. I highly recommend this professor.
What an awesome prof! He was funny, lively, his notes were excellent. Easily one of the best profs I have ever had.
PLEASE, if you have a choice, take his class. He is everything you could want in a prof. EXCELLENT. I dread having to go back to a lesser prof for my next biochem course. He is the standard against which I will measure all others. Funny, clear and extremely knowledgable. He lectures entirely from his head with his back to the notes. IMPRESSIVE
I adore Parrish. I had him for 200, 330, and next semester for 320. He is very clear, tells you exactly what you need to know for exams (Learning Objectives) and exams are straightforward and not meant to trick you. Answers questions very quickly on eClass/via email. Textbook is not mandatory to get a good grade. Great guy all around!!
Awesome prof! He should be the professor that other professors must model themselves from. He is humorous, organized, knowledgeable, easy to talk to and answers every questions making sure that a student understands what he said. His exams are fair and he tests directly from what he teaches you. I am only taking BIOCH 320 because he is teaching it.
Great prof, funny guy, textbook was not needed, uses iclicker for participation marks. Uses powerpoint slides. Says "Wheeeee" a few times.
Dr. Parrish was probably my best profs yet at U of A. Learning objectives are clearly stated in notes, iClicker questions are helpful and count for participation, lectures are interesting, he is hilarious. SO GOOD.
There isn't enough room to summarize this man's greatness. His notes are all you need, but you'll actually WANT to attend class thanks to JP's wit and charm. It's worth waiting a semester or two just to take bioch with him.
Dr Parrish is amazing. His notes are straightforward and he explains in full detail. I found his exams a bit tricky, so make sure you study hard and attend all the help sessions. Averages are high though. He is charming and witty and a very good professor who knows EXACTLY what he's talking about.
Amazing professor! It isn't a very interesting course but he makes it very enjoyable and has a really good attitude. His printable notes are thorough and clear and his lectures are clear and he makes it light and funny to keep your attention. I would definitely recommend JP!
Hands down the best prof ive had so far,and ive had some great ones, very knowledgeable, good sense of humour, and clear and concise in his explanations, he almost makes me want to change my major...im sure most would agree with my assessment...as an aside the textbook is not required as his lectures give it all
Great prof. He somehow managed to get me interested in biochem! He is very funny, has a great attitude, explains things perfectly, has excellent notes, and if you study well exams are a breeze! Textbook not required. Overall, a very engaging prof that makes what could be a very dry course actually quite interesting. I hope to have him again
Dr. Parrish is one of the best profs I've had. His notes are crystal clear, his lectures are interesting and he makes going to class worth it. He has an amazing personality and doesn't fail to make biochem quite enjoyable. Textbook not needed because his notes are great!
Dr. Parrish is the best prof I've had so far at the U of A. He is very passionate about what he teaches, incredibly knowledgeable, and keeps lectures interesting with his witty humour. Textbook not required, class notes are all you need to do well on the midterms/final (which are very straight forward). Recommended!
Really great professor, entertaining and knowledgeable and eager to help.
Great prof! He wants the class to be interactive so he includes iclicker questions and asks questions to the class. He's nice to approach and answers questions with clarity. the course I did not like because It had allot of memorization and biology. this made it tough for me to get through but at least the prof was entertaining.
Great prof, explains the concepts really well and is really helpful with any questions you may have. Would highly recommend!! At the u of a, though, all the biochem profs are pretty good!
I can only repeat what everyone else says. This guy is awesome! He is super funny, makes biochem interesting, and his exams are super fair. I would highly recommend him.
Dr.Parrish was fantastic! Class was interesting, and he has tons of office hours and is always happy to help! Having 5 quizzes/midterms seemed like a lot, but it helps recall during finals, and the class was a fantastic experience overall!
Tough class, mainly due to the high curve. But Parrish was a great prof just that it was tough to get an A
Great prof. Very clear, explains concepts very thoroughly. Never makes class feel rushed. He also has a great sense of humor which makes class enjoyable. Exams are very fair. He puts on help sessions prior to the exams which is really good of him.
AMAZING prof! I'd really reccomend that you take a class with him if you have the chance. I was worried that the content of this class would be difficult to grasp but this guy explains things so amazingly well. Not a hard class at all as long as you don't cram for exams because it's too much material.
Probably my favourite prof that I have had so far. I'm not really that interested in biochem, but he made class super interesting and was so entertaining. Exams are fair, but I found the final extremely difficult. Hard to get an A in the course though.
Funny guy. Boring Class. He is silly in his own way and tries his best to make it interesting. He posts the notes up so you don't REALLY need to go to class. But if you want to ace it I guess you should.
Most boring of the 300 level biochems. Pretty easy material though.
One of the best profs I've had. Explained concepts crystal clear, just used to textbook to solidify the information. The class isn't hard at all if you have some previous knowledge of biology. Midterms and final are all fair but read carefully. Makes class fun, has a great sense of humour! Definitely take him.
Parrish is great :) He takes his time explaining material and uses really good analogies to make concepts clear. He's funny and managed to make biochem class enjoyable. Exams are difficult and marks are competitive, but just study his notes (and make good notes in class) and ask questions if you have them.
Dr. Parrish is a good prof and majority of the notes are complete. He goes through the material in a lot of detail but focus on the points in the notes. Tests are specific so make sure to know everything to get the A. Helpful during office hours. He is a happy prof.
Great prof! Lectured well and his notes were nicely organized. Also answered board posts and emails promptly. I like the way he distributed the grades in the class (three 15% MTs, 5 online assignments worth 10% in total, 45% final). It's not hard to get a good grade in his class as long as you put in the work.
Awesome prof! Good notes, and explains concepts really well. Iclicker questions were really helpful, and class is mandatory anyways to supplement his notes with what he says. Exams are hard but they are the same through all sections . Would definitely recommend overall!
5% iClicker participation, 35% midterm, 60% final. Exam material based off notes, but textbook helped explain concepts which couldn't be expanded on in class. That being said, Parrish is an amazing prof! He's always enthusiastic and willing to help students. Makes class enjoyable. Final was fair, but marks are high so definitely know your material.
I feel like though hes a pretty good prof, helpful, and tries hard, he really doesn't actually care that much about how his students do. Considering the midterm/final are shared between profs, he does not give his students hints about how or what to study (the other prof did). Bioch was okay but definitely not a course I super enjoyed. HARD MIDTERM
Dr. Parrish was a great prof, he was clear and explained the notes thoroughly. He was very knowledgeable and passionate about biochem which helped. Midterm was very hard, but final was much more manageable. Attendance is mandatory as he explains topics more clearly than the notes, writing in the margins helped. Good prof though, highly recommend.
Dr. Parrish is an awesome professor; he's hilarious and his class is tons of fun. Make sure you show up and take good notes. He explains concepts pretty clearly and knows his stuff. The course itself is challenging so make sure you stay on top of the work. You cannot go wrong if Dr. Parrish is your lecturer!
Biochem 200 is not a fun class! But JP made it so much more enjoyable!! He's so funny, if you need to take the class, take it with him, and you will get the best possible grade!
Pretty straightforwards class, lots of marks I lost were due to reading, so read carefully! Dr. Parrish is pretty clear in class, though not always. He didn't answer my emails very quickly, but his answers were good. Breakdown: 2 20% midterms, 15% assignments, 5% iClicker, 40% final. Overall Dr. Parrish was funny and nice, and a good prof
JP is awesome!!! He genuinely cares and he made attending a 9am class very enjoyable. If you are confused ask questions as this course is very content heavy due to the fact that the final is worth 60% and is multiple choice. His clicker questions and extra help sessions are wonderful! Definitely take him over the others. Also his fashion rocks ;)
Best professor I have ever had hands down. Fantastic-- very passionate about the subject, readily answers emails, and motivated me to take more biochemistry. I have nothing but positive things to say-- the class was interesting, and dr. Parrish was the best!
Dr. Parrish is wonderful! He is very enthusiastic and engaging and he made lectures as enjoyable as he could while still getting through everything. Midterm was awful, lots of people were very pressed for time. The final was better so don't let its worth of 60% scare you! Lots of material to stay on top of but I would definitely recommend JP!
He is by far the best prof I have ever had in my undergrad. He's funny at times and just simple awesome. This course is hard and frustrating at times, but JP made it very enjoyable!! Would take him again anyday.
Amazing prof! He's really funny and has amazing notes! Parrish also give practice questions. The exams are very hard though. You get a midterm and a final, and that's it! Make sure to read VERY carefully and know all the details.
1 Midterm, 1 Final, both a huge chunk of your grade. All the info you need is spoon-fed to you in lectures, but you have to know it back-to-front to APPLY it in the exams. If you do, it'll seem straightforward. Don't waste your time reading the text - you're ONLY tested on lecture material, so study the shat out of his slides and you're golden.
Such an awesome professor! He makes hard topics easier to understand and boring topics of a lot more interesting! His notes were clear but you may want to add some extra side notes to them for your own understanding. Exams were somewhat challenging but fair; he would not add anything onto the exams that were not covered in the notes or lecture.
Dr. Parrish is an AMAZING professor. Took BIOCH 200 with him last semester and am taking BIOCH 320 with him now. He spends a lot of time ensuring everyone understands the concept and comes up with really innovative ways of visualizing difficult material, especially through metaphors. Be prepared for very trickily worded multiple choice questions!
He is a good prof but he is also very boring. Because his voice is so soft it's really easy to drift off in class. The class average was really high in this class so get ready to study!
Dr. Parrish is a solid prof, always answers emails. The material is really difficult and you have to understand a few key concepts for a few problems while memorizing the rest of the information. Exams will show whether or not you understand the material. Some of his slides I wish were more clear, but study his slides and you'll do well.
Took both 200 and 320 with Dr. Parrish. He has a quirky sense of humour that I found enjoyable and a very laid back personality. Tests in 320 were easier than 200 and I would recommend taking 320 if you enjoyed the material in 200. He is very approachable and if you're having trouble with the material - go to his office hours!
Dr. Parrish? Awesome. Biochem 200 Tests? Not awesome. He answers email quickly, willing to meet during office, and is very good at getting across his point during the lectures. However, biochem 200 test are 100% reading comprehension test. They're annoying to write because you have to read things very slowly and carefully to get the answer.
Little quite and boring, not loud and enthusiastic but still good. He explains things pretty thoroughly and replies to emails really fast so thats good. few jokes here and there. as for the course: know your stuff, its not just pure memorization but a lot more understanding and comprehension. by god read carefully on those exams, no joke.
Overall a pretty good prof. Explains concepts well and gives plenty of practice before the midterm and final. The iclicker questions are helpful as well, which is not something I have found in other classes.
I actually enjoyed going to this class even though the content itself isn't my favourite! An excellent prof with mostly engaging lectures. Exams are all multiple choice and a lot of trick questions. Make sure you're very awake when you take his exams because you have to read carefully!
On the day of the final exam, I realized he had a nose piercing and I had not seen that all semester. Other than that, he's a friendly prof enjoyed the lectures
Midterms were fine, the final was definitely a doozy. I've never gotten an A+ with under 87 overall before. That being said, Parrish was pretty clear at delivering his material and you can tell that he genuinely loves his job. Was super prompt at responding to the eclass forum as well! It's a real shame he didn't teach the whole course.
Final (especially the written portion) was ridiculous compared to the midterm. Make sure to do the practice final. It helped me A LOT. He definitely knows his stuff and is always so happy when teaching. He responds quickly to e-mails and questions on the forum. Recommend 100%.
Final was brutal this year. Just do well on the midterms (not too bad) and ride that curve to victory. Curving was VERY generous, with an 87% as an A+. Parrish was amazing, much better than our other co-prof. Truly passionate about his teaching. Many office hours for additional guidance. Quick email responses. Clear explanations. Just great!
Tricky class but great prof! There's a lot of info and consolidated exams, so he does a great job to try and prepare you. Tests are hard, but the curve helps! Do the practice exams and questions, but don't rely on them as your only resource as they will throw everything at you. He's probably one of the best profs at the UofA.
Take this class with him! Dr. Parrish is an excellent professor who is witty, charming and charismatic. He knows his stuff very well and is incredibly helpful during office hours.
I did a lot to study for this course, attending classes for sure, read the textbooks, dig through the class notes and went to the MSG. Employ the strategies for multiple choice questions that way you won't find yourself running out of time on exams. Help sessions before midterm and finals are great as well. i would say above 90 is guaranteed A+
Parrish was a fabulous professor! He was funny, tried his hardest to have answers for every question, and was very helpful when you asked him to break things down more. His notes were extremely detailed and he posted both the original copies and the ones with his notes online. I'm recommending him to everyone who has to take this course.
Quirky but articulate. Parrish's explanation of the concepts were concise and engaging. HOWEVER, he covered a lot of material so lots of memorization! Hard work is essential to success as usual. Final exam's written portion was way too difficult (all applications on new situations), so do well on the two midterms!
Great Prof! Would recommend!
Loved biochem with Dr. Parrish. Honestly the best choice for your biochem 200 professor. Midterm and finals are consolidated but Parrish can teach you the same concepts in such a clear and understandable way.
Dr. Parrish is an excellent teacher with excellent notes. The class has a high work load and requires a lot of memorization. Exams are tricky: lecture, PowerPoint, and practice midterm based. Biggest tip: do the practice midterms!! There are concepts on them not covered in class that are on the actual exam and there repeeat question on the exam.
Best tip: do amazing on his midterms (which is achievable - just lots of memorization but practice midterms are very helpful) because the final will destroy you!! His assignments are super easy and participation marks are based off of iclicker questions. Went into the final with a low A and came out with a high B+ :(
This prof may or may not be my spirit animal. He gets overexcited w silly protein things and pokes fun at our class for not answering his Qs or dropping pens n such lol. Overall, he interacts and has an infectious smile and makes 930 AM protein structure fun. To counteract all stuffy profs there's Dr. P. Beware of his MC, he's a beast. High ave too
An amazing prof who's well spoken, absolutely hilarious and makes biochem interesting. His notes are crystal clear and his exams are extremely fair, if you understand the concepts and how they relate to each other, you'll do great. The assignments are easy, mostly just looking at proteins in databases.
Great dude. I've taken bioch200 and bioch320 with him and I wish I could take more. He's an amazing lecturer who explains things very well so you pick up a lot in class. iclickers keep class engaging; assignments were pretty easy; midterms (2) + final were very fair. No textbook needed.
Honestly a GOD. He explains concepts so clearly and he takes a lot of time to answer questions in office hours and through email. The midterm for this course is pretty easy but the final is a little difficult. Didn't even think it was hard but I think you can definitely do amazing if you study early and not in the last week before the final.
He's a great lecturer and is clearly passionate by the subject. However, I found the midterm challenging due to the fact that it's mostly a matter of reading comprehension. A lot of material is covered during the lectures, however, only a few concepts are actually tested. Studying for the MT, I wasted too much time memorizing :(
I had Dr. Parrish for BIOCH 200, which was a pretty average course. He is an AMAZING lecturer, hands down one of the best I've had in 3 years at the UofA. He is funny, explains concepts clearly, is always accessible for help, and uses lots of iClicker in class to really nail the concepts down. Exams are just tricky multiple choice.
Superb guy, genuinely nice and caring. Readily answers questions with long paragraphs on the online forum and makes lectures interesting. Exams ARE HARD, acute memorization and application are required to answer MCs that have options like "A and C but not B", makes you really doubt your choices unless you know the material inside-out.
Parrish was a great prof. He explains things really well, cares about his students, is very easy going and is always willing to help outside of class. Definitely not the easiest class, but you can do well if you study. Exams are tricky, you need to know the info really well due to the format/difficulty of the mc questions.
Jon is a great prof! This was def one of my fav classes. He teaching is so clear cut + the midterm is really fair (average around 72). The final was a lot harder (average was a lot lower). My recommendation is to do really well on the midterm (95+) and do OK on the final... you'll come out with an A.
Chill Dude
Dr. Parrish is one of the best profs I have had! He truly cares about the material and his students. He wants everyone to do well and is always ready to assist where need be. His clicker questions help you to understand the material rather than memorize it which is useful on exams. The exams are application questions so don't just memorize!
A lot of people seem to like him. Personally I found his explanations hard to follow and lectures to be a little dull. The midterm is especially tough with all the trick questions.
I'm not a big fan of his teaching style. It can be difficult at times to follow what he's saying during class because he sometimes talks too fast. His tests are difficult as they will cover minute details that you might miss if you don't pay attention in class. He's funny and a caring person, just be ready to put in some effort if you want an A.
LOVE THIS GUY!!!! he's such a nice prof and sosososo helpful. I honestly don't get why people say they don't like his teaching style because he is probably one of the best uofa profs. and his notes are all you need to do well on exams, but you have to come to class to take good notes!! overall, would recommend.
Jonathan was an awesome prof! Although the course is relatively challenging, he did his best to prepare us for the exams. He posted lots of practice questions and also based some of the iClicker questions on the exams. Not my favorite course ever, but I would take a lecture with him again!
Dr. Parrish makes a difficult class much more enjoyable. He goes through topics very slowly and is always willing to answer any and all questions. He's a pretty funny guy to boot. Would definitely recommend, don't let my bad grade defer you from him, it would have been worse with anyone else.
I loved how he treated every question with the same level of respect, no matter how obvious the answer might be. He used some of the practice questions word for word on the midterm/final, but balances it out the with the most bs trick questions and questions that make you doubt your entire knowledge of the course...
the course is generally hard but since he talked really quick, it made it much harder. he is a nice guy and all but i would not want to take the class with him again.
Parrish is a good prof. Biochem 200 is a difficult class and he does a good job explaining challenging concepts. He's very kind and shares some really good stories in class. He also makes the average class mark a B instead of the usual B-. Biochem is horrible, but if you have to take it, try to take the class with Dr. Parrish!
Parrish is a solid choice for a prof, however this course is structured to basically be reading comp + biochem so be wary of that! Slides are pretty clear and well-organized! He can explain things kind of slow but he doesn't rush through anything so pick your poison with that.
Amazing and helpful prof. I did not love the course itself, but he made it a lot more bearable. The content got harder after the 1st midterm imo. But the curve is forgiving, an 82% got me an A-.
Dr. Parrish is a solid choice for BIOCH 200, he is very funny and passionate about biochemistry. I'd highly recommend.
Parrish is an amazing prof. The content of the lectures can be boring but his sense of humour makes up for it. He explains concepts very well and is always willing to answer questions in class or on the forum. Tests are tough, they always try to trick you but if you study lots and know the material inside out you will do well.
Best prof Ive ever had. He explains his slides very clearly so youre never confused. Posted practice questions after every topic which were great study tools for midterm and final. Clicker questions were an easy 5%. Midterm was easy but there were lots of trick questions so know your stuff. Class is hard but take it with him and youll do fine.
I highly recommend taking Parrish if given an option. He made 320 a blast and was very helpful if you had any questions. The exams were tough but the material was easy to understand.
I studied everything for the first midterm putting in hours understanding it but I did so bad I wanted to drop the class. His tests are the ones that say "a and c" which means KNOW YOUR STUFF WELL! But I persevered and I did pretty good on the final and second midterm. Assignments are easy and shift online with COVID was smooth BUT PUT IN THE WORK!
Talks way too fast and often loses track of what he was saying mid-sentence, so he makes up a new sentence that makes no sense. Really should have a script if he keeps forgetting what he was saying. Online with him is not recommended as he complicates easy topics. He will explain a concept in 10 sentences when it can be explained in 2 sentences
Although I really enjoyed Dr. Jonathan, the other BIOCH200 class learned things we did not. There are very crucial topics which are tested on and are only discussed in lecture for a mere 10 seconds. My experience was online, your mileage may vary. Knowledge of chemistry is an asset in this course the way swimming is an asset when drowning.
I thought Dr. Parrish did a really good job teaching this course online. I liked that he posted recorded lectures and then once a week would have optional live class for questions. He does a great job at explaining course material in the simplest way possible and makes it clear what you need to know. However his exams can sometimes be a bit tricky
Very caring guy but his exams are quite tricky. He adapted quite well to the online class and I really enjoyed his lectures. Made me genuinely interested in biochemistry.
Dr. Parrish is a great prof. During COVID, there were 3 quizzes (6%, 12%, 12%) the first being a proctor setup. Midterm was 30% and final was 40%. The concepts in the course are not challenging to grasp; however, the exam questions can become reading comp and have many "select all that apply." Still a great course and a fantastic instructor.
I believe that all or most Biochem 200 classes use the same exam and midterms so don't worry about trying to find an easier professor. Dr. Parrish really does care about his students but I found he is hard to convince that an answer on a midterm or exam should be looked over due to ambiguity in the question. Overall, good choice.
Horrible. Midterm questions are ambigious and he doesn't even give you paper for the test and expects you to orient bases and amaino acids in your head
EVERY WORD HE SAYS MAKES SENSE. He makes biochem easy to understand. The class is consolidated so the tests are the same no matter which prof you take. The tests can have some pretty tricky questions, but if you pay attention to his lectures you will do fine.
Dr. Parrish is such a GREAT professor in biochemistry. BIOCH320 itself is a hard course and you are expected to memorize lots of things, but Dr. Parrish really did a good job explaining the complicated terms and mechanisms. Always choose Parrish for BIOCH, or you will regret it.
You need to memorize EVERYTHING to do well in the class. Midterms and Finals are very specific with questions like "both A and C" or "none of the above" or "all of the above" so you need to know you information without second guessing yourself. Definitely recommend doing the practice questions because very similar to exams.
If you want to build a strong foundation in biochem and enjoy it while you're doing it, please take BIOCH 200 with Dr. Parrish! He is an amazing prof. :))
Dr. Parrish was one of the best profs I've had. His lectures were so engaging and I loved coming to class. He made learning the material so easy and not intimidating. He was respectful in class and was always answering questions on the forum. He also paused after each slide in class to see if anyone had questions which I appreciated. 100% recommend
Dr. Parrish is an excellent choice for BIOCH200. His quizzes are open-book and open to collaboration, even though questions are a bit on the tougher side. He makes you work for a good mark, and going to lectures are necessary in order to do well on exams. As long as you're paying attention in class and study a bit on your own time, you'll do fine.
Dr. Parrish's lectures are fantastic and he always makes sure we understand the concepts being taught. Responds to emails extremely quickly as well. However, his tests can be tricky and you must read very carefully if you want to do well. Make sure to do his practice questions since he reuses questions for the actual exam.
Parrish is a really great prof! You have tod understand the content extremely well and do the practice questions. The average is high so it can be tough if you're doing below average. As someone who got a C+, don't underestimate this class. Dont cram like me!
This course is very difficult if you don't have time to memorize and can't engage yourself. I did this course half online and half in-person. It was extremely difficult. If you aren't passing this course and don't know whether to drop it or take the online Sem Quiz, I would highly recommend dropping it and taking it at a later time.
Biochem is hard no matter who your prof is, but Dr. Parrish is exceptionally good at teaching it. Concepts are presented clearly and its really up to you to review and understand them. Midterm and Quiz were brutal though. The participation questions during class are nice if you are having a hard time understanding.
Where to start. Honestly, the actual material (professor aside) is relatively straight forward. Exams are impossible. Notes are dry and bland. You will have to put it in a lot of effort on your own time to do well. Don't take this course with chem 263 because biochem 200 will require you to teach yourself. Do the practice questions and pray.
Olivia rodrigo was right cuz damn it was brutal out here. Exams testing criteria was very unclear and study guides included stuff that was either never taught or requires thought that was not needed in class. Assignments were fine but man was I fighting for my life on the midterms
BIOCH 200 is definitely a challenging course, make sure your foundations are strong and having BIOL 107 under your belt is EXTREMELY helpful. Dr. Parrish makes the course content digestible and easy to understand. He's incredibly funny and very helpful during office hours. Exams can have picky wording so make sure you study everything thoroughly.
Taking this class alongside PHYSL 214 and PMCOL 200 as well as after taking CHEM 265 helped a lot. The little bits of material that overlap make studying for biochem easier and can really help with understanding concepts faster. The quiz felt harder than both exams, but the exams themselves are fair.
Dr. Parrish is hilarious and a great prof! Lectures are engaging, and he goes into a good amount of depth to ensure you understand the concepts. He is also patient and always accessible to answer questions. BIOCH200 can be a challenging class, but there are ample practice questions provided for you.
He is the best!! He cares so much, everything he says makes sense, he stops for questions as much as he can, and answers emails/forums super fast. He is a really good choice for this course.
The course content is not overly challenging, but having a good foundation of biology behind you really helps. The exams were straight forward but you had to know lots of detail and read very carefully. As long as you spend the time studying the course will be fine. The prof is also very helpful and really cares about you understanding.
Dr. Parrish was a decent prof...but the course was the absolute worst. The exams focused a lot on the small details which made them super hard
Solid choice for a prof. Covers the content well and at a good pace, respects the students, and exams aren't too bad if you review your notes. Would recommend!
Dr. Parrish is a great professor for BIOCH 200. The course objectives are clear, he only covers what you need to know for exams, and always thoroughly answers questions both in class and on the forum. The exams are tricky but if you know your stuff you can excel in the course.
Parrish is decent at lecturing and his slides are good. He tends to go a little too quickly over important topics. Provides problem sets but no sample exams (but you can find them on Reddit). He was patient during office hours. Exam questions were an absolute horror. Course delivery was just bad in general, but it's a BIOCH 200 problem.
Parrish is a prof that I wish I had for every class. He is very knowledgeable and takes extra time to explain harder concepts in class. He is also more than willing to have a sit-down appointment to go over the midterm, tough concepts, etc. Overall a wonderful prof with great lectures and a very caring approach to teaching a hard subject.
I really didn't want to like him after finding out we had to use an app that used location data to take attendance for a participation mark. But... I do see why he wants people there. He is an incredibly engaging lecturer and explains things extremely clearly at a good pace. He seemed very invested in our learning and was always accessible for qs
Did not enjoy having a midterm so late at night. He's also not the kindest prof ever, but also not the meanest, just kind of mid. Having a midterm that is 40% and then a final that is 55% isn't fun. I wouldn't urge you to take this class with him, but I also wouldn't urge you not to. Nothing spectacular.
Dr. Parrish is a pretty good prof, he tries to keep lectures interesting with participation questions. Course itself is set up poorly, we had a 40% midterm, 55% final, and 5% participation. Also midterm was really late at night. This class definitely has to be priortized if you want to do well. Good luck to anyone taking it.
Was a really fun class overall. The assignments were a bit annoying to do but they're nice to have if you take the time to go over them. Pay attention in the lectures as best as you can as some of the details he expands on are helpful for exams
Was nervous about biochem but he made the material very approachable. It is still a tough course, lots of material to cover, so make sure to keep up with studying, but the notes were very well done, the lectures were great, and he is quick to respond to questions on the online forum. Will definitely be searching for him for other BIOCH classes.
Biochem is a tough subject but Dr. Parrish makes it bearable and sometimes even enjoyable. He has great analogies to help understanding and lecture slides that are easy to follow along with. He's also very kind and understanding.
Dr. Parrish is a really great prof and explains things in lecture very clearly. He answers emails and questions promptly and is very educated in his field. Epoll questions made the class engaging and I felt as though he wanted his students to do well. Exam questions are very similar to practice problems provided.
Dr. Parrish is an amazing prof, super chill and fun. BIOCH 200 is a very difficult course, with 45% midterm and 50% final, with 5 quizzes for the 5%. You have to attend lectures to do well as the course has so much content and is very unforgiving if you fall behind. Dr. Parrish is great at explaining the topics and making sure we do well!
Extremely outgoing and enthusiastic lecturer. Explains concepts very well, answers any and all questions with great specificity, and just an overall great prof. Go to class as his explanations enhance what the slides may not explicitly be indicating. 45% midterm 5 1% quizzes and 50% final.
Good prof, awful course.
Dr. Parrish is one of the most kindhearted, wholesome profs I've had before. He has an excellent sense of humour and uses funny/creative analogies to explain concepts. His lecture slides are very straightforward and the epoll questions are very helpful. His exam questions are brutal IMO but the curve makes it alright. Wish he taught more courses.
excellent professor but the material is difficult and the exams are very hard
the material is hard, the professor is not. he is very helpful in office hours and very approachable
This course is tough, but Dr. Parrish does a great job explaining and clarifying. His analogies and ePoll questions help develop understanding of the material, and he provides quick and helpful responses to eClass questions. Biggest complaint is with the weighting of assessments (45% midterm and 50% final), but that's probably out of his control.
Dr. Parrish is an amazing professor! He does his best to make complicated concepts easier to understand using lots of analogies and examples and his lectures were always enjoyable and entertaining. He also does a great job of engaging the class using practice epoll questions during lectures. Overall an amazing professor!
The weighting for this class is ridiculous, 45% midterm 50% final and 5 x 1% quizzes. The prof was great, however, as expected the content is hard.
Exam weightings were brutal with tough multiple choice questions. Dr. Parrish did a great job giving analogies to simplify concepts. The class is tough based on how broad the scope of the course is (and the exams), but he does a good job providing you with the info needed to succeed. Know your cycles inside and out - reactants, effectors, etc.
BIOCH200 is a tough course, but Prof. Parrish is great at breaking down complex concepts. His analogies and ePoll questions really help. I also found Unstuck AI useful for study prep. Overall, challenging but manageable with the right resources.
He is dedicated and does a good job explaining the material. He clearly cares about the subject and his students. However, the class is very content-heavy, and with grades based solely on quizzes and exams, it can be tough. Despite the difficulty, he's a nice guy who makes an effort to help students understand the challenging material.
Decent prof overall, but Adrienne Wright is better. After the midterm he started rushing through concepts and explaining very poorly. Also doesn't hint at exam questions at all (adrienne does). If I had to take him again I would, but I'd recommend Adrienne. Exams are the same year to year, & they're fair if you're prepared (but tricky).
Great prof, interesting, easy to understand lectures with good pacing. 40% midterm, 55% final, 5% online quizzes. Exam questions are similar to the in class practice questions (which he posts on e-class in his annotated notes). Lots of practice questions provided.
Dr. Parrish delivers amazing lectures every year, and I am super impressed. He tries his best to have the students engaged in in-class pop quizzes that reflect exam questions fairly well. However, he writes the most difficult and trickiest tests I have ever taken, so beware of that.
Dr. Parrish had amazing lectures that demonstrated his competency in teaching. In-class questions were interactive and fun. I like to say his examinations, however, represent his "dark side", especially considering that the MCQs are very tricky and unrelenting. With experience and attention to detail, students can absolutely succeed in his course.
hes funny and made lecture enjoyable. the only reason this course gets a bad rep because the test is not a regular test, its a reading comprehension test essentially. he does not make the exams, the course coordinator does. this class is extremely doable if you literally just go to class and do minimal studying.
TBH, I struggled with the material, which is on me. I showed up every day, but it just wasn't clicking. I personally found it hard to take notes in the class because he talks fast and gets really quiet near the end of his sentences. I enjoyed his method of 'let me ask you guys a question' with the online epolls. Nothing against him. He's good
Dr. Parrish was an amazing prof. The class itself is difficult, but he did his best to help. He would ask epoll questions throughout the lecture, which kept it engaging and made it easier to remember the material covered!
His lectures were very interesting and he teaches the material well, it's just a really hard class. The tests were really hard and you can tell he expects you to know the material inside and out. Really good teacher though and always available for extra help
Dr. Parrish himself is an amazing lecturer! He was funny, provided lots of epoll questions and analogies to better understand concepts. Unfortunately, the course is pretty difficult (in my opinion), and sometimes it felt like the notes didn't cover exactly what was on the exams.
