Great Anatomy & Physiology Teacher. He makes classes fun and humorous. He offers a good amount of extra credit. If you are passing at the end of the quarter you are not required to take the comprehensive final! If you are not passing, the final replaces 4 lecture exam grades which can really boost your grade. Challenging class nomatter who teaches!
This was his first semester teaching this class, you could tell. He made the class far more difficult than it needed to be. He had his few favorites that were all women he spent the majority of lab time flirting with. They got A's. Funny how that works. His grading was inconsistent and his tests were made to be an ego boost for him I beleive.
This instructor is inconsistent. Visited face to face about an absence, told I could make it up and then he said no I couldn't. Plays favorites with certain girls. Not helpful at all. Tests are hard and misleading. He will talk down to you (ie "Are you stupid?")and argues telling you you're wrong when you're reading from -his- notes. Avoid him!!!!!
I'm not as harsh with him as some- but I'm taking 242 from Brenda mccrakkin- I was able to get a 3.6, but only because i did all the extra credit. I have a much higher grade in brenda's class, with no extra credit. I needed some tutoring with a family member who had biology exp. to get through andy's class.
he didnt teach very well at least were I could understand. his tests were a pain and hard. he didnt clarify a lot what was on the tests.
If you need to take a life science class, and he is the only professor left, do NOT take him. He teaches abstractly and is not direct. Take Sapp, Cole or McCracken
Super tough prof! I found him very easy to work with (maybe because I couldn't stand one of my other profs this quarter.) If I had questions, he was very good about answering them. No problems at all. He even had a sense of humor! That's hard to come by in the bio dept at SCC!
Yes, hardest teacher at SCC, but, his willingness to help and his office hours are impecable!
lots of studying required
Great instructor! It's amazing i actually found a teacher who teaches. Shocking I Know! He is very intelligent and knows what he is talking about. tests are hard could lighten the load a bit. Overall i recommend him if you want to learn and not just pass the class. If you want to just pass take Jade Bost if you like to waste money.
Easiliy the hardest prof. at SCC, but you will be extremely well prepared for future classes. You can't just get by by menorizing definitions you actually have to know the stuff.
Awesome teacher! very helpful makes everything clear! you learn spoo much! his test are very hard so Studying is mandatory! Well worth it!
He is very organized, but makes the tests more difficult than they need to be. Will minus points on the tests without any explaination.
He was very helpful and try to helpful and fairness to all students. He will help you go through this class.I found out he likes to teach!!!
Very thorough teacher, has study guides that are right from the lecture, and tests include half of the study guide questions! You start out with 50% of the answers! You definitely need time to study, be able to go to the school during open lab and don't miss any labs! He is extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and fair. Extra credit options also!
Test doesn't have any multiple choice, all you have to do in writing and explaning. Qwestions were confusing. He had one 5points extra credit to go to SFCC to hear Brest Cancer talk, so if you can't do it you cant get that extra credit. And he had 1 more extra credit(very difficolt), so I didn't bother with it.
Biology 241 and 242 are very hard classes no matter who you have. Schmidt's tests are not multiple choice. I felt that this was actually a plus, because you could get partial credit for just getting the increase, decrease, no change part right. I actually felt like I learned something in his class. I definitely recommend his class!!
Same rating, different class; very organized, knowledgeable and clear. The teacher is not hard, the material is - I've heard the same about A&P everywhere. Tests are written, not MC; short keywords are all that is needed. Put in the time (it is a lot) and you can do it.
Dr. S is a great professor. He takes time to make sure you know where you stand grade wise and what you need to do throughout the quarter to get the grade you want. Tests and material are very difficult but if you put in the time you can get A's. He offers a ton of extra credit opportunities and makes the class entertaining.
Living through my Dr. S experience is by far the most challenging thing I have ever done. He prepared me for nursing school, so far as to know how to work my tail off and STILL not understand a darn thing. He loves to talk about himself and his work... get used to it. SUPER challenging material made harder by his incessant narcissism.
Schmidt is a great teacher and makes himself available to you if you have questions. It's a college anatomy class so no, it's not easy but he gives you the material needed to succeed. He provides study slides for the lab exams and does study questions everyday before lecture starts to ensure you understand the material!
This is the second part of a 3 part series. The first part was tough but was all multiple choice. This is much tougher. He believes (rightfully so) that students must be able to understand AND communicate material. Thus test format is typically 2 sentence technical answers to hypothetical scenarios! If you're serious about learning he is the guy!
Attending class is a must! Dr. S has excellently outlined PowerPoint notes that detail what could be on a test, but there is a LOT of content to cover very quickly, so try and show up, it makes it easier. Labs are typically interesting and can help you grasp things in lecture, even though there are separate tests for the two.
LOVED Dr.s's class, the way he designs exams really forces you to understand the material. His tests are challenging, and they require you to think conceptually using the knowledge you acquire from his lectures. Be sure to take advantage of the study guides, practice exams and extra credit, and try to stay ahead of content. Overall great teacher!!!
Dr. S knows his material for sure but he expects us to know the same material with a snap of a finger. Attendance would normally be required but he talks so fast that after 30 min in lecture your lost. He grades unruly. He will take points off of everything and anything he can. His expectations are unclear and tests us like we are doctors.
Best professor I've ever had. He doesn't make it easy, but he has a lot of office hours and answers emails really fast. Use the study materials, put in the work, and don't be afraid to ask for help and you'll do well. He has a reputation for being hard but it's because he wants his students to really learn the material, not just regurgitate it.
Awesome professor. Course is heavy but he tells you exactly what you need to know for tests. He looks for ways to give you points on tests, not take them away. Always available outside of class and is really easy to get along with. Very respectful and intelligent.
Dr. Schmidt is by far one of the best professors I have had at SCC. He is very quick to answer e-mails, gives clear instructions, and wants each student to succeed. This is a tough class, and he is a tough grader, but you will learn a lot, and find that although Dr. S is tough, he is very nice and helpful, especially if you are willing to work.
Dr. S is a hard, but fair teacher that prides himself in educating his students. Yes, the content load is heavy, but not so much that commitment to the learning process won't see you through. Very accessible outside of class and holds students to a high standard easily achieved. Textbook is more of a guide than necessary.
Dr. S is the best professor I have had at SCC in my 3 years of being a student here. He is very knowledgeable about what he teaches, and expects his students to really know the material. The great thing is, he tells you exactly what to do to in order to succeed. DO THE STUDY GUIDES! They are the key to doing well on the lecture tests. Work hard!
He is the best professor Ive ever had. He really loves teaching and if youre willing to learn then hes willing to teach. Yea his tests are difficult but he has a practice exam for every test and many of the study guide questions are on the exam. Theres no reason not to get an A. Hell sit down with you all day if you need help.
DON'T take this class summer quarter. It's far too much. Over half of the class dropped/ failed out and the median of tests were in the 60's - 70's. I got an A but it was not worth the struggle. I lost weight from not eating and my stress was tangible 24/7 + no sleep / gym. The professor.. good guy but he is definitely pompous about his class.
If you have a choice don't take him. His exams are structured in the most difficult way possible and he is a very harsh grader. There was hours of videos to watch along with hours of lab work to do, so absolutely do not take his class with any other content heavy classes or a full time job.
Do not choose this teacher for a&p he has no textbooks, you are teaching yourself the content from dozens of videos. He is extremely rude, he does not answer your questions about the content but instead makes you feel bad for not knowing the answer. He does not care about his students, first week of school he told me I would fail. But I passed so!
It's hard to keep caught up, got new content before were done with the old. He's actually nice to talk to but he balances his niceness w/ one-sided reasoning for causing us pain, don't bother fighting him. Push yourself past the pain it's the only way. He explains it real well, there's just a lot. If u want to challenge yourself like me just don't.
He told me I wasn't fit for the nursing program week one. He is rude and narcissistic. He literally inundates you with work, and you barely have time to study for a test while also learning new material. He is clear about what he wants, but over half the class dropped because of the way he teaches and how he talks to students. Dont take for A&P.
He is super nice, and he explains homework if you don't understand it. Tests were hard, make sure you really study for them and watch the lectures. Do the study guides, they really help and several of the questions are on the exams. The labs were fun and relevant to the material.
Dr S made a difficult course enjoyable and manageable. He is clear in his expectations, helpful outside of class, and respectful yet lighthearted during labs. He is amazing and I actually wanted to go to class. Although the material is difficult he makes it less overwhelming and is always happy to help if you don't understand something
Do not take this instructor unless you have hours upon hours to sit and watch lecture videos every week. Grades harshly on tests. Makes himself accessible to students outside of class hours but in the middle of the day. He is very well organized and has the class well-laid-out but the amount of material for a quarter system is just insane.
A&P 2 is a hard class. It just is. Andy does an awesome job of making it as fun and interesting as possible. It is still really really hard! However there is just no avoiding that and his organization and clear grading criteria make it as straight forward as possible.
He is nice and very smart but his tests are designed in a way that won't let you get away with cheating or not watching the lectures. Too much lectures videos and LOTS of materials to cover. Lab exams are hard but lecture is HARDEST. Can barely make it to 80 percent grade. Again very nice but tests will make u cry and u will be recorded on tests.
I'm fully convinced this Proff comes in here and upvotes himself. Genuinely the worst teacher at this school. DO NOT believe any positive reviews given on this guy. This class is unnecessarily complex, and the teacher is a narcissist who thinks the way he teaches should be the only way to learn.
Dr Scmidt is okay. He is tough though. be prepared to spend quite a bit of time doing homework and watching hours upon hours of lecture videos. Labs are in person and participation matters. If you are late, he will start taking points off Tests are ridiculously long and he grades tough.
He gives you everything you need to succeed that most teachers don't give you. He gives plenty of opportunities to improve on assignments before turning them in. He seems a little mean at first but he's really just straight forward and wants everyone to not only succeed, but actually know and understand that material.
Andy is great! The course material is TOUGH but he tries to make lectures are fun. The tests are hard and there is a lot of lectures to watch. He is honest. Gives feedback on all assignments/tests. If you are willing to put in the work, he is willing to help. Don't take his class if you don't want to put forth effort to actually learn/want easy A
All the positive reviews are absolutely fake- that's a promise. I've never, in all my years of college, had a professor this tough of a grader. His tests are formatted to be as difficult as possible. Inundates you with so much lecture there's no time to plausibly study for all of it effectively. AP is already hard- he makes it x4 harder.
Would not recommend tests are beyond hard and not fair time wise.
This course is undoubtedly challenging, yet it's well-organized, with Dr. Schmidt's requirements being clear and straightforward. It's advisable not to enroll in too many other courses simultaneously, as this one requires significant time and effort. Additionally, the course offers a great opportunity to improve your time management skills.
This professor moves very quickly and the exams require a lot more attention as they are built to make sure you've learned everything. You will have a large amount of work; I would recommend taking less credits while you have this class. His lectures are great; his delivery keeps you engaged. He's very good about answering your questions quickly.
I was rather surprised by the amount of people saying positive things about this professor and how organized he is. From my time with him I've experienced more confusion from his canvas page and pain from his exams than I've ever had in my learning. Life is much better once you finish the class. 9 exams, everyday assignments & a research project.
The people who complain about this professor have a poor work ethic. Yes, this class is hard but the class is very very organized. His tests are tough because he expects you to answer thoroughly, but he gives you the materials to prepare and succeed. He has thorough study guides, videos on how to study for exams, and is willing to answer questions.
it ok. lot work. lot lecture. lot studying.. too much time study. but rewarding at end. only because no more suffer.
Very high exceptions, some can achieve but I think most are unable to. So much anxiety over the exams. I'm not lazy I'm a hard worker. It does take me longer to remember and understand information. Be ready to sacrifice a lot for this class and still not have your grade reflect your hard work.
He is smart and willing to help students, but gets off on how difficult he makes the class. Tests are too difficult for the time allotted, at least online. It feels like you never get to take a breath during this course, so think hard before signing up for his classes. Class feels unorganized and he won't put in grades for weeks at a time.
Do not take him, he is tough and doesn't make class fun. He also will call you out and makes you feel bad in front of the class. The other professors try to help students and make them feel good and not dumb. He does not give you enough time to finish lab exams. DONT take him.
Don't take his zoom courses, he keeps yapping and repeats himself and goes over the schedule even though it is there for us. He spends time talking and talks about things that are relevant. Students will ask questions and he will spend 30 mins on it. They should do that during office hours, not spending time taking time from us. I could be studying
He wants everything to be perfect, he hates mistakes. He will even tell you and call you out in the course. Test are heavy and for those who have accomadiations please don't take this course. He makes you feel dumb and will tell you in front of the class that you did not get 100 on the exams in the course. Save yourself depression and anxiety
Professor is not the best. tough grader he wants you to go in detail when it comes to exams even though you don't get enough time. 53 mins for 105 questions... what the heck. not worth the stress. take this course where the teacher cares about you and not give you crap. He calls you out in class if you don't do well. Goodluck
The amount of work he gives was equal to a full time job. Literally. I quit my job because I couldn't keep up with anything. He comes off stern (he's actually pretty nice if you stay on his good side and communicate) but this class legit made me change my major because he is the only one who teaches it. Take this class by itself if you need it.
Absolutely amazing professor who knows his stuff! Tests are difficult but he gives you a study guide with 90% of the questions on the test and he will go over them with you. He will also look over labs before you turn them in. You will have to put in the time but if you do you can absolutely be successful. He also gives extra credit (a ton in 242)!
Jonathan was one of my favorite teachers. Even though English is my second language, he was always supportive and quick to answer my questions whenever I needed help. Anatomy is a challenging class, and having a teacher like Jonathan made it much easier to understand.
was the rudest individual I've ever encountered. Friendly to some while being openly disrespectful to others, including me. Despite my thorough preparation, he often criticized me for being unprepared. One day, he publicly claimed I wouldn't succeed, but when I showed him my materials, he had nothing to say. His behavior was truly unacceptable.
Dr. Andy is one of the most caring instructors I've met. I've taken all of my courses online for the past year and a half and this is the first professor I felt connected to. Yes, his class is hard but it's bio 242 it's gonna be hard. To make up for it he gives tons of extra credit and is ALWAYS open to help and wants you too succeed.
Lots of EC. Answers ?'s quickly, & had office hrs where he looks over everything. So much work, but lots of resources. Gave study material. A lot of word for word study questions were on exams. Had an exam almost every week though, 9 in the 3 month quarter. Not great with DAS accommodations for some. Not the worst, but not the best. High standards.
Don't take this professor! Jonathan Schmidt is one of the toughest professors at SCC and takes great pride in it. The class consists out of a ridiculous amount of material including lenghty pre labs (1h+), in-depth study questions, boring lectures, hard labs and tough tests. If you want a good grade, prepare to spend 45+ hours per week (No joke!).
He is a tough teacher, the lecture length is manageable. Take this class by itself if you are able to this class will take all your free time. His test are very detailed, you could memorize everything and still not receive a high grade. He wants you to know everything like you have be studying for years, be aware
Do NOT take BIO 242 with this professor unless you want your entire life to be consumed by stress. He criticizes your work after hours of effort, docks points for tiny mistakes, and even belittles students, claiming they won't succeed. The class ruined my mood, my health, and my sanity. It's NOT worth it!
While teaching a course with heavy homework and much to memorize, this professor is not warm or willing to work with students on an individual basis. He has a lengthy list of rules and regulations for being his student and would like students to learn the pillars of communication and success above understanding Biology. Awful experience.
Definitely a hard class but Dr. Schmidt is great. A lot of dad jokes and explains things clearly. Very responsive and lots of time to meet if needed. No book, everything is tested from the lecture videos and study guides. His testing is more comprehensive, so you really need to be able to explain concepts. Tons of extra credit to cushion tests.
Do not take this class, he makes your life so stressful and awful, so much time is taken up in this class and he is super strict and doesn't have any grace for late work no matter the circumstances. There are so many rules for his lecture exams including wearing sunglasses through the test and showing him your whole room he is awful, DO NOT TAKE.
Jonathan is one of the toughest professors at SCC. He has no mercy and a lack of clear communication. By all means, DO NOT take this class, unless you want to study 40+ hours per week just to get criticized and humiliated in front of the entire class. He also makes you do a urinary lab with your own urine, if your not comfortable with it, 0 points!
He provides study guides that reflect his exams word for word, and hands out a ton of extra credit that will nicely cushion your grade. There is no way you can cheat in this class as he is very strict and tests are proctored, but if you put in the time you can really comprehend the material. Have good time management and dedication to succeed!
Anyone who rates Dr. S. poorly lacks the intelligence to call themselves a college student. He gives you everything you need to learn the material and do well in class. He was great.
He prepares you for every exam with resources, but they are difficult being mostly short response. He takes advantage of online lectures, leaving the content to memorize overwhelming. There are 10 exams including an optional final. Labs I wish were included in the syllabus were the urine lab and blood lab.
He is full of himself. He makes you call him doctor. When you are behind in the class and ask a question from a chapter before, he says “well, you should already be there”. What kind of teacher leaves you behind when it's your first ever time taking A&P and you are clearly asking for help.
Passing this class w a 4.0 is very possible, but you have to be VERY commited. I recommend taking advantage of office hours, he was always available, helped me with anything I needed clarification and would gladly explain anything. The exams are SO hard, they are back to back, almost an exam every week. pulled 9+ all nighters, gives a lot of ec too
Dr. Andy is a nice enough guy, but as a professor, he's not the best. His grading is very exam heavy which sucks because the exams are ridiculously difficult and hard to prepare for due to all the content you need to be learning all the time. Says 50-80% of exam questions “we have seen before” but that's not even close to accurate. More like 10-20%
States that if you want a 2.5 in his class you will have to put in 35 hrs. a week and every point additional take 1 hr. per week of work. He then goes on to tell you to get into nursing school you need a 3.5 so 45 hrs. a week! 5 credit class should be 15 hrs. Uses reflective glasses and mirrors to show your computer screen for exams. So stressed!
I really enjoyed having Dr. Schmidt as a professor and am a little confused by some of the lower ratings. But, I did notice that a lot of students in the class had intellectual difficulty. Many were actually of very low intellectual ability. That's putting it nicely. It's a community college. Not a real university.
DO NO EVER TAKE BIO WITH HIM!!! He made a already stressful class 10 time more stressful, has the weirdest way of "teaching" his course, it almost impossible to pass. Constantly accusing you of cheating when you in fact do not cheat. It lowered my GPA sm, PLEASE be mindful of it and choose wisely!
Worst college experience. He is openly condescending to students and makes them feel less than. He has a big ego and is full of himself. He intends to fail as many students as possible by making his exams different from what he teaches. Stay away from this cluster.
RUN puts some questions you've seen before like about two even tho he says it's more he grades ridiculously hard giving minus one points which adds up don't take him he will ruin ur life he told me id have to retake the class again to get a better grade in the beginning almost like you have to take it twice just to get a C
If you don't have self discipline or have a strong drive, you may feel this class is impossible. If you want it, you can do it, and he'll help you get there. Some feel he's unfair, and I'll agree that the class can be overwhelming, but it's all for the best. I've come out the other side a far better student.
I am a nursing student in a BSN program, and I still feel very fortunate to have learned from him. Nursing school is more challenging and complex than I ever expected, and I'm grateful for the strong foundation he helped me build.
I'm not sure why he has some bad reviews. I think he was great! He gives you lots of opportunities to come to his office hours and help with assignments before he grades them so you can get 100% on them. He gives you buffers with attendance in case you miss, and extra points if you don't miss a class. He also gives you extra credit opportunities.
