This guy was made to teach Eng 1. Only 11 out of 36 ppl stayed because this class takes a lot of time to complete the 5 essays.

A wonderful teacher, very interesting and entertaining style. Expects a lot from students. will have 1 paper, 1 fair sized research paper, and final test all in the last two - three weeks of class. Learned a lot, blood pressure went through the roof.

It was inconceivable to think at first that he was actually a teacher, but he knows what he is talking about if you just see past the crazy man he is. He is a good teacher, but may be a bit too much for those without ADHD. While you do learn how to write papers in his class he does make things entertaining and fun.

Great teacher...has a bit of a crazy streak to him. Very knowledgeable about the subject & if he feels that you try in his class...he will do all that he can to give you options to boost your grade. If you attend class & make the effort, you will get a B or higher.

I took his English 1 and I'm taking 2 now. Plenty of writing assignments to keep you busy. Everything is pretty smoothe except for the research paper. When the librarian comes in, MAKE SURE YOU TALK TO HER or you'll get lost.

He was difficult, I admit, but he really is a fantastic professor. All of the complaints are from people who just want to skate through class, which you can't do in his. But he was very educational while being challenging. You just have to actually put effort into the class. I recommend him.

HARD TEACHER. If you do exactly what he asks and do it flawlessly; you get a c. Class was very had but once you take it you will be a MUCH better writer. Didn't like the guy personaly too much, but he is a good teacher. Helped my writting skills a lot.

I would venture to say that Mr. Schouten is the best professor I have had in my two semesters at Solano. He cares about his students, and has a great sense of humor which makes class enjoyable. His lessons are very interesting. Make use of his office hours to make sure you're giving him the depths he wants in your essays. I strongly recommend him.

He is a good teacher. Schouten does not just let you slip by, he expects you to, well, learn. People say he is confusing in which he can be sometimes, but mostly it is the students who do not take notes or right down guidelines to an essay leading them to receive a c or below and lead them to complain. This is not a skim through class.

A very good teacher who was helpful and answered any questions asked with clarity. However, was a little unorganized. Very fun and involved class with not too high of a workload.

Although Schouten is a lil cooky sometimes, hes pretty clear he wants you to pass. I did everything no one else wanted to do, including:reading Salinger and Covey, the ruberic, ask questions, take notes, do the summaries,essays, attend the class, show up at his office to show you care about your grade, and participation. So I got an A.

If you are expecting to cruise by with a C, expect to get a D. If you come in expecting an easy A, you will WORK for that A. He's a tad disorganized, but his policies and reasons for all his rules and grading is quite fair. Quite difficult unless you work with him during his office, but fun and a VERY good teacher for students who care enough.

He's a good teacher, tries to be clear/helpful. He's a tough grader, but fair. He tells you EXACTLY what he expects, multiple times. I got an 85 on the first paper, just doing what he said. This can be an easy class, but you must show up, read the books, participate, talk to him about your papers, and apply yourself. You'll learn alot from him.

He is a nice teacher. I followed everything he said, like every instructions for the essays. Sit at the front of the class and you will succeed. It will only be effective if you bring the right attitude and motivation with seriousness in his class. Good luck!

You read a lot and write a lot, you also learn a alot. He is packed of imformation and if you ask for help he will give it. Not a class for lazy people.You have to be there and do the work to pass. He makes sure everythings is clear, and explains things repeatedly. If you're a strong writer take him. If you hate or suck at writing dont take him!

He was one of the best teachers that I have ever had. He is very good at explaining, passionate about the subject, and pushes you to do your best. If you just want to be lazy and get an easy A, dont take him. If you want to become a better writer and be pushed to be the best you can be, then what are you waiting for? Take his class!

Professor Schouten is an AMAZING teacher! I have taken him twice 370, then English 1 and love him. He is not easy you have to do the work or as he says "do what is asked" and you will be fine. He has a brilliant mind, and offers many office hours if you need help. I would highly recommend him if you are serious about learning.

I TOOK Schouten for two semesters and I learned a lot from him. not just i class knowledge but practical knowledge. He doesnt use textbooks but you need to fill your printer cuz will print pages of essays...

Schouten is an amazing professor. He taught my Eng 348E and absolutely loved him. His thoughts are brilliant and I enjoyed every second in his class. No text book required!! Always had a great attitude and I would enjoy having him as my professor again.

Professor Schouten is very intelligent and has a good sense of humor, he makes class fun. No textbook purchase required, we create our own textbook with the notes we take. He does all kinds of studies and has created his own system of success for each individual student. Very helpful, very knowledgable, one of the best!

Gets confusing at times. Take thorough notes, and always review them while your memory is fresh! Do not miss a single day of his class. Missed 1 day and when I got back it felt like I missed out 2 weeks. He is wonderful if you prefer to move at an accelerated rate!!

Very good teacher. He has a good and a somewhat sadistic sense of humor. If something is not clear, ask him about it. Go to office hours. He is willing to listen, and if you can convince him that you deserve them, he may give you extra points. If you think you'll need extra credit, ask for it early on. Loved his class. Just DO THE WORK!!!

I took this professor twice once for accelerated English and again for English one. His class is simple if you just do what this man asks and actually put effort. If your constantly late or not in class your going to suffer. I only recommened people to take him if you want a challenge in your writing. He is a great teacher.

A lot of people don't like Schouten but i thought he was a great teacher, he gives you very cut and dry rules/outlines for writing a college level paper, if you have trouble organizing your thoughts and writing them out in a way that captures readers then this class is for you. A lot of analytical reading which was very interesting to me.

I went and spoke with him several times about my essays and he gave amazing one on one advice for future essays. He is not the best teacher in large groups, but wonderful if you catch him outside of class. I noticed that people who took him for the lower level English classes first did really well. Like, A'S on everything well.

You really have to figure out the way he works, and visit him during office hours. He's a nice guy and will offer great feedback one-on-one but his directions and lectures can be difficult to follow. Basically if you're unsure of what to do go to his office and ask him personally.

I took his English 002 class and loved it. However, I did have to work very hard to get an A. I found that his written instructions for papers were not very clear, but GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. He will be so glad you put in that extra effort, and will give very insightful advice. A huge part to passing his class is just finishing the work on time.

You must pay attention, or you will not understand. TAKE NOTES!! He always repeats himself because he wants you to pass. If you do not listen, you will not get the easy grades. If you listen, you will pass with no problem. He's a great teacher and I looked forward to coming to his class every other day. I learned SO much from him and his class.

If you catch him for one on one help he is amazing and will basically outline your paper for you. He is funny and gives fairly easy assignments, if you just do them you essentially pass. Professor Schouten is an amazing teacher. Make sure to take notes, especially when he is giving examples about how he wants your papers written. Follow directions on what he expects from your papers and you will pass. Also participate, even if it's a couple sentences, be on time.

I really love this professor, he makes you really think. Gives thought provoking reading and let's the students run the class in some ways. Not the most clear on what he wants because he lets the students decide what is going to happen

Schouten is very helpful & he always gives very straight forward outlines. I dont understand when people say he isnt clear, everyday he makes a huge point to talk about clarity. Participation is a lot of your grade, you need to talk in class discussions. If you take notes show up on time and do your work youll pass no problem

Professor Schouten is a great. The problem students are having is that they are not prepared for the amount of work given. Being in the class, I noticed that students are not doing the required reading and assignments. That puts the whole class behind because of their lack of commitment. Do the reading, assignments, and participate! Its college!!!

He encourages class discussions and doesn't allow late work, but this was my first class at Solano and he was a great prof. He brought up great topics for discussion and assigned interesting readings. I had him for English 02 and would take his class again.

He's great. Really loves what he does. He has a bad rep because he can be difficult to understand sometimes but he doesn't want anyone to leave the class unclear of what to do. Plus he is very understanding.

I'm not going to lie, he's a great professor. As long as you keep up the good work then, he'll be able to help you out during his office hours. Often times would confuse the class including me based upon assignments explained. Until you need to ask for clarifications. Other than that, he's good at making sure that people communicate with him!

Took him for English 001 and 002. Overall a very good professor once you get used to how he does things. There are quite a few essays that you'll have to write and the instructions will be ambiguous at times. This is because he wants you to take the initiative with the assignments.

IDK what all the bad reports are about. Yeah, he can be a bit scattered but he is the best prof I have had at Solano. Very smart guy. He definitely cares about his students. If you fall behind just talk to him. Stay ahead of due dates!

Mr.Schouten is here for the students. He was a great professor and cared about the students. He was always willing to help out any student who came to him with questions or problems. He let us rewrite essays when they didn't come out to our standards. I recommend taking his class.

His lectures could be a bit confusing sometimes but he's always willing to help. I would say the biggest thing is he's a harsh grader if you don't follow his rubric. I really enjoyed Mr. Schouten and his style of lecture. I thought it was a great class to introduce college collaboration and how to write papers for future classes. The grading is strict, but I believe it is necessary to prepare for more advanced classes in the future. Also, the essays were able to be resubmitted for a better grade.

This class is a continuation of English 1. The same writing format as English 1, but the professor's intention is for student's to explore and be more creative with their writings. I would say that there is less papers to write in this class, but all the essays are able to be resubmitted as well. Also, if apply yourself to have a better experience

I liked that this course was asynchronous, so I was able to study and work at my own pace. There were a lot of assignments, but it was helpful for mastering the material. After his course, I felt more confident in my ability to write professional documents. He was encouraging and supportive of his students' success.

Professor Schouten is truly an inspiring educator. His classes are well-understood and clear, and he is fair in offering extra credit opportunities and extending deadlines for assignments and exercises. I'm genuinely confused by the negative reviews. This is one of the easiest classes you will ever take. If you can not get an A in this class, maybe college is not for you. He gives you plenty of time and feedback on all essays, and is one of the only professors that truly cares about his students. I highly recommend him, and will miss his class!

Amazing professor! I've never been given so much help and attention (especially for an online course) from any professor! He loves to engage with his students, making class actually enjoyable and hilarious! Take him for an easy A and hilarious lectures!

Good guy, As long as you do the work you should be fine. Had to submit my FINAL but was stuck at a train station w/ no wifi, emailed him that I was submitting it late and he told me to submit it once i'm home safe! Lessons were usually pretty interesting as well as the works we would read. Easy gen ed class that i enjoyed more than my core classes

This is my 2nd time taking him because eng1 was so great! If you do the work, stay curious, and treat this class as something valuable you'll do great. If you want to skate by and put in zero effort then there's only really one person to blame. USE his office hours if you're struggling or have personal issues happening. He's so flexible if you ask.

Excellent teacher. This is my second English class with him. If you are not passing this class, it is your fault. He truly cares about his students and wants to see then succeed. There are writing assignments, and he tells exactly what needs to be done. if you are not satisfied with your grade, he will let you do it over.

Very honest and considerate. Sometimes the critiques or advice don't make too much sense, but if you speak to him in person, he'll break it down. If you're outspoken/extraverted and attend class regularly, this is your guy. If not, you'll still be fine, just don't expect an A. Not a huge fan of his grading process, but it's manageable.
