If you need any math course this guy is totally great to take a class from. You will learn a lot, 3x5's are allowed for exams, drops the lowest test, extra credit for homework.... But, best of all this guy can help you understand math instead of memorizing the formulas. very cool.
This teacher is the best
He is sooo much fun, I just started last week and he has made it a fun experience, I actually mentioned to family that if I could have him my entire college life, that I would probably want to become a Math major! He's GREAT!
This teacher is great !! He is a nice young guy and cute too. Vey good teacher !! I just love him !!!!
Confusing, doesn't clearly review for tests.
hard, hard garader. a boaring class. cant explain good because he is not capable of teaching math. his grading is not fair.
John was an awesome teacher. He explained things very well and the tests were cake in the summer session. Offers extra credit and makes HW worth quite a bit. Highly recommend this course.
He is an awesome teacher. He explains things very clearly and helps you to remember the basic concept instead of a bunch of little things. Does not go on until everyone understands. Always available by email and office for help. No notes on tests, no calculators period! You don't need them though. He shows easy way to do it! Highly recommend!
excellent person and excellent teaching style
I actually passes his class. I learned so much in that class, and it was awesome to get a B in his class. Now I'm in Math 100 and miss him teaching.
Unorganized material. Not fully prepared for lecture. Some questions our class had were sometimes left unanswered or left to be answered in the next class meeting.
easy class, great teacher
i like mr. segal. he is a good teacher who explains everything very well. take him if you want to understand what you're doing in math.
john is willing to help you if u ask. he also understands that people have a life, so if you cant make an exam OR 2 he will help you make them up. Yea john.
He is a great teachers, explains everything, test are easy, but need to study for it. GREAT TEACHER if she was teaching MATH-351 I would take it. GOOD LUCK
Mr. Segal was extremely helpful to me in getting through algebra. He is all algebra - no jokes, politics, personal stories, etc., just the stuff you have to learn. He seems very eager to help students succeed and is easy to approach in his office. I highly recommend him if you want an algebra teacher who understands non-math types.
Highly Recommend.Very thorough in his explanation, even at times slow and repetitive. You'll appreciate it for this class though.Very hard, especially the idenities.Gives take home quizzes, and tests are straight forward - No trick questions. He wants to make sure you understand the material and that can be seen in his lectures and his tests.
Nice guy but in our classes experience he has difficulty explaining the tough subjects so he tends to speed through them and go slow on the easy parts. He gets upset when we don't go as fast as the other trig classes are.He did not teach identities well and the class average was below 50% on that test.Through he is a nice guy he can't explain well.
I wish Mr Segal was as great as everyone is saying but I had a hard time learning from him. He is a nice guy but he has a hard time explaingnig Trig on a beginners level- he just puts things on the board and looks at us hoping we get it and when we don't he tries to explain it but he just can't. He also really let the class down with the identities
i like mr. segal! very nice teacher and easy to approach. he also teaches very well. i learned a lot from him. recommended!
Segal is a GREAT teacher! HE provides many examples and will help you understand math problems the book way and the shortcut way. He is also a very funny person and encourages class participation...I definately recommend registering in all his classes.
He is a really good teacher...he explains every thing very slowly. If you have a hard time with math 120 this 123 class is what you probably need. To bad he won't be teaching it this spring....
EVEN A MORON COULD PASS HIS CLASS. He explains well and uses real life examples. COME TO EACH CLASS. DO ALL OF HOMEWORK, BENEFITS A LOT. EXPLAINS ON YOUR LEVEL. AWESOME>AWESOME:)
He is a very good teacher. he explains everything well. he is helpful. It is helpful to do hmwk.
this guy is a little weird (not in a bad way, just a bit clumsy)he let's you drop your lowest test which dramatically helped improve my grade! very helpful during office hours. iver all he is good teacher.
Okay I HAVE to set a few things straight. I have taken professor Segal for Math 120, 334, 370, 400 and I wish that he wasn't waiting until the spring to teach 401. He is an EXCELLENT TEACHER.I had to take math courses over and over again throughout high school, this was the first teacher I had ever had who tries his hardest to make things clear.^_^
Can't Teach
Can't Teach. When someone in the class need help on there work he lags or too lazy to show the person/class what to do
J. SEGAL WASN'T AS GOOD AS EVERYONES SAID. I TOOK HIM FOR MATH 123 AND I ENDED UP DROPPING OUT. HE DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO EXPLAIN PROBLEMS, HE JUST EXPECTS YOU TO GET THEM. VERY NICE GUY THOUGH, JUST NOT A GOOD MATH TEACHER. A LOT OF QUIZZES, AND HARD MIDTERMS I FAILED BOTH, AND I EVEN HAD A TUTOR. HE IS HARDER THAN EVERYONE SAYS.
He is really nice. I can't say he is the best 'cause he the 1st math teacher that I've taken at SCC. He tries to explain as clear as possible, but since he has to cover almost 2 chapter per class, it gets a little confussing. If u like math, it's gonna be EZ.
People are totally exaggerating when they talk about mistakes on the tests. He is a good teacher. He tries to make it so that the entire class is following along, but confused faces and silence discourages him I think. Just do your homework, and come to class most of the time, and you'll be good.
he is a very nice guy but a little strange but it's what keeps you interested i the subject. He makes a lot of mistakes and swears once in a while but it's funny. he is very help and will do what ever it takes for you to understand the problem. i'd take him again
he's a really nice guy. I'm not gonna lie I know he knows the math, but he's not very good at explaining it. I got an A, tests are not that hard, but I've already had calc. If this was my first calc class, I probably would've died. He's so friendly, but just so clumsy and ackward at answering questions...
Extremly nice and very helpful, if you do the work and attend class you will get a good grade.
professor Segal is just great. I had a pretty good time in his class! He is so devoted to his students that he will come on Saturdays just to work on more problems. its true that he is somehow clumsy in his explainnations but once you get used to it, its cool, plus He is a fair grader. i would definitely recommend him
great teacher, devoted to helping students learn just he teaches fast so make sure you take note and use office hours. Quiz almost every week like 4 questions
He is a very honest and straight forward professor. If you don't show up to math classes, you probably will not pass. He is easy to get along with and if you show interest in the class he will do anything he can to help you pass.
He's a very kind& easy to talk to.You can turn in hw later than the deadline(nice).Exams are straightforward from the hw & lecture note.Be aware of last chapter(16).It's hardest chapter i've known in cal series.Everything else is easy.Several quizzes to take home. Not so clear &interesting in explaining."A" is possible.Final is easy.
I advise you pre-take the course before you take his class. He has the power to give a final you've never seen and beyond the course level. I did all my quiz,HW,and study min.6 hrs per day but his final was never seen & unlike HW or quiz. The test/final will be harder above level of your comprehension. Miss 1-problem = down 1 letter grade.
Fairly easy class, he is willing to help, and questions in the test is very similar to the study guide.
I had heard horror stories about other teachers with math300 classes. Prof. Segal always made sure that the whole class understood the concepts.
Even though the course hasn't finished, Segal is a great professor. Cares if his students understands the concepts. Takes time out of his work sched to organize class study sessions. Grades fairly. Gave extra credit quiz. Matches lowest test score with your final test if you do better than your lowest test score. Study guide similar to tests.
He confused me! I didn't like his teaching at all.
He is a very excellent Prof because he is always in his office hours. I am not a smart student in that class, so I ask many questions during his office hours, and he is still willing to help me. He is approachable, and he gave a lot of helpful handouts which we can use to review. If you pay an attention and study hard, you will be good in Math 400.
Hardest working teacher on campus. I took 400 with Segal in the Fall and his class prepared me very well for 401. Tough but fair grader - exams follow the practice tests fairly closely. He puts A LOT of effort and time into helping his students prepare for exams and understand material. Very available in his office hours, even came in on Saturdays.
The review before mine said it wonderfully (05/27/10..."Hardest working teacher on campus...") I will just add a little. Real examples! He doesn't give you the test questions by any means, but he gives examples that show you how to use the concepts learned. UNDERSTAND the given examples and homework and you're set.Don't understand? Study sessions!
Segal's a good teacher. Grades fair on exams but throws lots of curve balls... Amount of homework is INSANE for only 5% of your grade. Expect around 50 to 100 calc questions EVERY WEEK. Takes me 1 full day or 2 nights to do. Had to drop a different class because of this. (couldn't study for it) Take home quiz every week, too...
If you are registered to take Prof Segal's Math 100 class & still have time to get into another class, my advice is to try and get into another class. He seems like a nice teacher but he will fail you in a heart beat. The niceness he puts on is not real.He will hand out a study guide for his exams but nothing on the study guide will be on the exam.
If you are not doing well in this class and you are thinking about dropping this class, drop it! Prof Segal does not cut you any slack when it comes to grading. He's an okay teacher but not as nice as he puts on.
I took Prof. Segal Calculus I and II in 2010. He is a extremely helpful professor since he is always at his office hours. He gave a lot of handouts which can help us to understand the concepts. He also held study sessions on weekend before exams. Total 4 exams 1 final, and some quizzes. He fairly graded our scores. As an ESL student, I prefer him.
Good teacher, sets up review days before exams. Does assign homework but doing homework helps! Good teacher overall
Horrible teacher, hard grader, tons of HW, dropped the class and will take someone different next semester. His study guides have very little on them that are on his tests.
Hard teacher, he teaches material that is not tested on and tests on material that he has briefly covered. He hands out study guides but material on study guide is not on exams. Try not to get into another class if you can. I barely got a "C" in this class and I am an "A" student.
This class was far from easy, I did about 90% of the homework and barely squeaked by on tests. The book is very bad at showing problems step by step. Mr. Segal is extremely helpful, but he teaches in class at one level and the tests are a couple levels higher. Definitely not and easy A
If you are looking to skate through 120 DONT take this class. If you want to LEARN and improve your math skills, I would highly recommend Segal. He is great at breaking down complex concepts in an understandable way, and genuinely wants to teach the student who are trying. But, if you dont put in the effort you will drop or fail, I promise.
I would not recommend taking Prof. Segal. You do not have to attend class though and you can still pass if you pass the exams so I guess that is one good point. He doesn't give you any breaks on passing you as some professors will find a way to pass you if you are sincerely trying to get through a class that you need for your degree.
A funny guy sometimes. Breaks down difficult concepts to help students understand things better. Kind of a slow grader. Always willing to help students and always is around during office hours and tells us ahead of time if plans change. Easy study guide examples but material on tests tend to be more difficult. Uses his hands a lot while talking
If you have a hard time reading chalk boards, then I recommend you dont take his class but he uses handouts so with lectures. He is a helpful teacher, but in my world I had a hard time understanding and had to drop class, because I was behind in homework, but once you do, do the homework it should be alright, just dont be afraid to ask questions.
Awesome guy!
If you ask questions, and attempt to do the work, there is nothing this man will not help you with! He encouraged me to sign up for MESA and now I'm actually excited to take Math 34, which is something I dreaded!!!!
REALLLY GOOD TEACHER!!!
He gives out weekly assignments that have VERY hard problems that take forever to complete, but what's worse is that the assignments comprise of over 17% of your grade, so you pretty much have no choice but to do them, unless u can ace every single exam in a Calculus class...
IF youre looking for that Solid A, you might want to take someone else. This guys tests are too hard. He is a very nice guy, but he is not hesitant to fail you. Cal 2 is already enough, but my advise take someone else!
I took this guy and I can say he's a good teacher but he's tough as nails. The Tests are tough, but all his quiz's are take home and they're all worth one test so that helps if you did bad on a test.
Everyone is complainin about how hard he is.. it's math.. every math course is hard. I took him for calc II, which is considered the hardest college math course, and passed with a B with little effort. If ur good at math, you'll be fine. But make sure u show up to every lecture (he doesn't stick to his syllabus) or else u will miss important info.
Segal has take home quizzes, and some of the problems really take a lot of thinking. So be sure that if you do take his class, you aren't doing the problems the day before. Segal is a very good teacher, and he grades fairly. As recommended for any class, do more problems from the book. Calc 2 was probably one of the harder parts of the calc series.
He has a great way to teach algebra 121. He offers a lab on Fridays, and you just review all the material that we learned in class that following week. he even brought in a math lab tutor to help with the labs. Also, his test are pretty straight forward. no surprises. homework + Review tests! he gives exams reviews; identical to actual exam!
Hes a great professor. Highly reccomend him. He wants you succeed. He is fair. He gives exam reviews that are identical to the actual tests. do the homework, study, and you will do good in the class.
Don't expect to take this class for an easy A. But, honestly, most don't come into linear algebra expecting it to be cake. I learned more from Professor Segal than I've ever learned in any math class. The concepts can be challenging but if you come to class and keep up with the work, you will come out with a wealth of knowledge. Segal is amazing
Outside of class, he is desperate to help you. Cares a lot. However, inside of class: terrible. Lectures just regurgitation of an already unclear textbook on surprisingly hard subject. Doesn't like to be interrupted with questions during lecture. Gets frustrated when the majority of the class devolves into blank staring. Extra effort required.
Great professor! i took 123 with woodmanse and failed his class. Once i took Segal i passed with a B! He makes it so easy to understand. Don't be afraid to ask questions because he will do his best at explaining it in a way that'll work with you. Not an easy class but he made it seem like it was.
Segal gives good lectures. You understand math with him!! Do homework and listen to his lectures. He prepares you for tests very well!!!
For people who are like me that really don't like math, it's probably never going to been an easy A for us. However, this Prof. is good at his job and approachable. I went to many of his office hours for questions about my hw problems and he was friendly and helpful. He lets you turn in hw after you get help on it at office hours
A little awkward and nerdy but quite entertaining. Never gets outright upset at the class, but if you disrespect him it clearly gets under his skin. Overall great guy who's willing to help you out, though he tends to fill the absent-minded-professor stereotype once in a while.
Highly recommend Professor Segal. He is wonderful at what he does, and very understanding too. He does not put anything that he didn't teach yet or covered yet on the exam. Also, if you do need help, you can email or go to his office hours. He is very helpful and very passionate at what he does.
In the movie Mulan says "You don't find a woman like that every dynasty." I just want to say you won't find a teacher like that every dynasty either! Take Professor Segal!!!
Before I take 402, I think it is less difficult than 401. But the truth is not that easy. You have to put some effort in it, especially the section 16, the last one, is the most difficult I think. You need to memorize all the steps and conditions, so that you can work on it perfectly. Professor is great, but you need to learn after class.
Math is not my favorite subject at all.. Prof is willing to give extra help after class also replies to emails quickly. Explains using different methods... if you don't understand text book method or method he taught in class. Quiz's are much similar to review. Good amount but not overwhelming amount of homework.
This dude tries really hard to be a good professor, and he really does want you to pass. He's easily accessible by email and will answer your questions very promptly. He assigns a lot of homework but most of it is optional. His lectures are kind of entertaining. Overall, he's pretty good.
Segal is by far, one of my favorite professors of all time. He really enjoys what he does, and wants to see his students succeed. He's very precise and organized in his lectures and he's willing to go that extra mile for you if he sees you're really trying your best. Show up, ask questions, visit him in office hours, and you should pass his class.
He takes way too long with his lectures and is very poor at explaining things. he always tries to prove why formulas work and its very confusing and never on the test. Every class period i was just waiting for it to be over.
He's so nice that he made me stop being afraid of asking questions in class, goes beyond any professor I've had to help you outside of class, is very good at explaining things, & provides the lecture notes. About 3 times as much hw as Mark Webster. I got an A by going to office hours for every assignment & re-reading the notes before every test.
He does not explain very well and Calc 3 is very difficult anyway. I had to read other books and view videos just to understand what is going in the class. I would not take this prof. again.
Segal's verbal written & verbal instruction is very clear. He makes himself accessible & quickly responds to emails. Printed handouts are provided for each lecture. The homework load is moderate & the study guides are EXACTLY like the exams. He offers partial credit for incorrect answers; grades generously but also fairly. He is patient & caring.
Would take him again because his exam reviews are a helpful tool. Too much hw. Doesnt know the subject well, he fumbles a lot.
For math 100 he was a goo teacher. not strict at all makes sure and takes the time so that all his students are understanding and following his lectures. tries his best to describe and teach tricky lectures in a way that everyone will understand it and gives options to those to choose their homework online or through the book. Would retake again.
I took Calc 3 with him, I loved his lectures. He focuses on the concept of the material before anything else, which I like because it shows how everything ties together. Study the practice exams and chapter review well and you'll get an A no doubt.
Segal is an overall great math professor. He clearly understands what he is teaching and how to break down certain concepts so student should can understand them. His homework becomes a lot if you slack off and Put it off the last minute. Doing his homework is the best way to study for his tests. Hes very willing to help outside of class too.
This man is everything you want in a professor! His lectures are so clear, helpful, and organized. Attend class to not only learn everything you need & to get helpful tricks, but also he does drop after a few absences. He is very very helpful & understanding! Reviews and homeworks are very similar to tests so just do it! 12/10 A+ would take again
Wonderful professor! Approachable, encouraging, funny. Great communicator of math. Really wants students to succeed. Intense summer class for me (not having had math recently), but made bearable by fair exams & clear handouts w/ key concepts, formulas & examples. Went above & beyond, even offering review sessions on top of lecture & office hours.
Hard to follow lectures.
I have taken Segal for both Calc 2 and 3, and would take him for the rest of my math courses if he were teaching them. Like any math course you will have to study and earn your grade but everything expected of you in these courses is reasonable. He definitely tries to make sure everyone in the class understands the material and he truly cares.
He gives your lecture package, and it is coherent. This is what you got: He explains the definition, then do few examples. It is really easy to follow his lecture. Even though he stop taking attendance after 1 or 2 weeks, you should definitely attend the lecture.
I took him for Math 402 several semesters ago but felt it was necessary to come back and give him praise where it's due. I have talked to several people and we all agreed that Prof Segal is one of the best math professors we've ever had. EXTREMELY caring, fair grading, tells you exactly what to expect on exams, and relaxed hw grading.
Prof Segal really cares about his students' success. He always makes sure we understand a certain topic before moving onto the next & is always available 2 help whether it's in his office or @ the Mesa Center. He grades fairly on exams. He has a dry sense of humor. He hands out a worksheet 4 homework that's due the following week. I recommend him.
Probably one of the best professors I've ever had. He really cares about his students and makes the effort to make sure you understand topics before moving onto the next one. He gave handouts for notes everyday which were super useful He doesn't curve, but his tests are straightforward and aren't difficult if you go to class and pay attention.
Professor Segel is very passionate about math and makes sure for students understand the material. Calculus 3 is a very rigorous class but he makes it easy to grasp the concepts. He provides many resources for his homeworks, midterms, and final; So make sure to use it to pass his class. He cares for you knowledge and wants you to pass.
Such a good professor, he really cares about everyone grasping concepts and will ask to make sure everyone understands before he moves on. His tests are straightforward and will not try to trick you. He provides many resources to pass all tests and the final. Homework is not graded but is very similar to the exams so I highly recommend doing it
Professor Segal is very down to Earth and very approachable. His lectures are to the point, and he is very methodical with his approach to certain problems. Sometimes he leaves it up to intuition after he thinks the class has the foundation down. I doubt I'll ever forget "r dr d theta" from his math 402 class. Amazing guy!
Prof. Segal's class is like a ball of string you are constantly trying to untangle. He is not the best communicator of math. Caters to the best in the class. Looks to them if they understand, then leaves the rest behind. Notes are useless.
This course is basically Math 120 but more in depth and calculus concepts . Having a solid ground in algebra is necessary because he will skim through the math problems in lecture pretty fast that youll need to have your full attention on him and the board only. Overall, a caring guy who wants to make sure everyone understands the material.
very nice professor, he make sure we understand, he gives extra credit, i will definitely take him again. The Math teacher.
He put alot of effort into teaching our class despite the online challenge. He taught very well and frequently asks us if we are doing ok. He always sought to hear our thoughts before moving on. His optional Zoom lectures were consistent and a great way to learn DE. He gave a weekly assignment of hand selected problems and 3 exams. Highly recommend
Professor Segal is very flexible, and straight forward with his lecture. Pay Attention to his lecture and do extra practice, you will pass! I take numerous hours to rewatch his lecture and practice. He will give you the tools you need to pass this course and all you had to do is craft works.
This guy right here is a sweetheart. Protect him at all costs. Even though Calc 3 was dummy hard, he made it so much less painful. He is insanely nice, even if he gave me an F I wouldn't complain. He is really understanding, responds to emails and encourages questions. This guy truly deserves respect because he cares for each of his students.
Very hard-working teacher. Wants the best for his students. Calc 2 is a tough class, but he made it enjoyable. Get ready to study a lot, but it is doable. I recommend taking him.
Nice guy, mediocre professor. He is not great with technology which only hurts in such a visual class. He comes up with sayings he repeats that are not helpful for the material. He is a slow and tough grader, but he lectures well and his tests are fair. He responds to emails and enjoys talking and answering questions. Know prerequisite material.
Pretty light amount of homework for a math class and doesn't overdo it, but not graded off completion so do your best to make sure your answers are correct. No quizzes for our class so exams were important. Study and use his practice tests and they aren't too bad. Found his partial credit to be a little weird/inconsistent but overall a good teacher
A very good teacher; he truly wants his students to succeed. He is happy to talk to you outside of class and re-explain things. His grading is simple - exams are set percentages, and HW is the rest of it. His HW is not too long. He does prove formulas a lot in class, but does LOTS of examples rather than proofs when it comes to hard sections.
Not exactly sure why Professor Segal has such a high rating here (at least from a student stand point). He always wants you to be perfect no matter what. There is no wiggle room for extra points so if you do poorly from the beginning or struggle with small details, you will not pass the class. He would be a good tutor, but not a professor/grader.
Very nice guy. Cares a lot, wants you to get the best grade. Always open for questions. Multiple support classes. But as a professor, he goes too fast. Expects you to know the basics. Really wants perfection. Doesn't allow the slightest mistakes for homework. No redos. Lots of homework per week. And 4 exams, plus the final.
Professor Segal is a caring instructor who wants students to succeed. While the course can be challenging, his methodical approach and abundance of practice materials make it manageable. Using tools like unstuck study alongside the textbook and attending office hours goes a long way in this class.
Great lecturerer, very respectable person, but the tests were intense For example, on the final we received a question that he specifically never taught us as it was revealed to us the night before and we had to study on our own for said question. He also never updated our canvas grades so we had to go through eservices to find our final grade.
Cannot heap enough praise onto Professor Segal. Explains the concepts very well and always answers questions. Using the study guides is absolutely the best way to prepare for tests, since a lot of the test questions are VERY similar to study guide. Extremely accessible outside of class and very easy on homework load and difficulty.
Very caring lecturer. Pacing is a bit fast, but super helpful during office hours (I'm not joking). If you are not good at integration in calculus, prepare to be humbled because that's like the entire class. How to succeed in this course: form a study group, attend office hours, do as many practice problems as possible from the textbook.
