His class was interesting but his tests were very hard. Also, the T.A. grades all the papers and she does not take pity on anyone.
The T.A. is merciless, but Sheppard himself is very nice and funny. I found the class very interesting, but then again, I'm a history major.
The teacher is nice, but the T.A. does all the grading, and she is the T.A. from hell... she took off 28 points of my paper because i didnt cite the paper correctly! She doesnt take pity on anyone and is veryyy rude!

Overall the class was easy; only 3 tests (Multiple Choice) with 2 (Gordon Rule Papers). However, the TA was quite harsh with the papers but not entirely unfair. Professor Sheppard's got a good sense of humor and was willing to help if you needed it. I'd recommend this professor to anyone.
Take the class if you can avoid the heartless TA. She grades papers like you're turning in a thesis and taking points off makes her giddy. Tests are pretty easy. You've gotta go to class, though!
Very hard. I do not know what everyone else is talking about.

very very nice and funny guy. if you go to class the tests are easy because all the questions are straight from his lectures.
Mr. Sheppard is a wonderful teacher, however if you ever need a response through email he doesnt respond very well, especially when refering to your grades... I would recommend him to anyone, going to class is strongly recommended though
He's the WORST teacher EVER. Make sure you go to class and write down EVERYTHING he says. the tests dont correlate with the lecture notes at all and you have to write a research paper in which he will take points off even for going over 50-100 words!!! Avoid taking this teacher! I loved history classes before him now i stay far away from them.
Jon Shepperd is a funny, highly intelligent country boy who knows how to teach. His lectures are dense, his tests aren't easy, and the papers take some time... but, all in all, I'm really glad that I had him. Honestly, I had to work harder in this intro AmHist class than in any of my upper-division courses but he made it fun and I learned a lot.
Great teacher, with a great sense of humor. He is making me consider changing my major to history.
His lectures are a bit rough and tiring, you just keep writing the entire time. However he keeps things interesting and he has a great sense of humor. You don't use the book, tests strictly from the notes. If you go to class, it's not that hard.
Very good professor! I recommend going to class, because all of the test material is covered in lecture. The textbook really isn't necessary. Two essays are required based on outside reading. I hadn't enjoyed a history class until this one! I highly recommend it.
Really funny guy. As long as you go to class, take good notes, and study it shouldn't be to hard at all. The papers are kind of hard but not that bad. Class lectures are kind of long and boring but he usually cracks a few jokes during class which are pretty funny. I would definitely recommend him.
Loved the class. Lectures were long, but Mr. Sheppard was very funny and enjoyed teaching, which made the class much more enjoyable! I find his sense of humor very nerdy, but I'd date him. The tests were straight from the lectures, so if you go to class, you should pass easily. There were only two papers and they were pretty interesting.
His power points don't really have notes on them. It's just the key points. You have to fill it all in yourself, which I think is helpful because you are forced to pay attention. This isn't a bad thing because he's absolutely hilarious, gives 5 bonus points and a freebie on the test. Papers are kinda hard, but not terrible. Take the class!
He's really funny and the lectures are interesting, but his TA forgets he's grading papers for a 2000 level class. Never used the book. Definitely go to class.
He would say one thing, and then repeat it as something else. very boring and long class. taking notes is impossible because he talks so fast and rambles! A V O I D
Sheppard knows his stuff and definitely loves the Civil War stuff. Interesting, but a lot notes. I bought the Student Notes at Bills from the last semester and just followed along, so I could just listen to the lecture. May take him for AMH2020.
Great class. Sheppard knows what he's talking about and gets into it. His lectures are enjoyable and he's funny. I really enjoyed it. Didn't use the class text book much but you'll need the other two to write the papers. Two 1500word papers and three tests including the final.
One of the best history teachers at FSU.
Very good teacher, kind of quirky with some of his stories but never the less is good at teaching. Go to class as that is where all the information for the tests will be. Lectures are boring but he tries to keep things interesting.
this is def not an easy class. i suggest going to class every day and take REALLY good notes - his exams are pretty much lecture based. put forth good effort on the papers and study real hard for the exams and you should be fine. His class may seem monotonous but if you're any interested in history you'll love him - he has a good humor
I'm in my 3rd or 4th class with Dr. Sheppard. He's a great teacher who has a ton of information about the subject. Funny, uses alot of 80's movie and videogame refernces, especially Indiana Jones and The Oregon Trail. Highly recommend his class
awesome teacher! follow key terns in lecture and you will do fine on test. He's really easy going and funny. not a history person but he made it fun.
Such a funny guy and his class was super interesting. I decided to continue taking history courses even thought it is not my major. I looked forward to going to class and absolutely loved it!
OK, so this guy is pretty awesome. By far my favorite professor at FSU. Just wrapped up History of the West. Doc Sheppard will inundate you with trivial but really interesting historical facts. Go to class and you will get an A. Attendance is not mandatory BUT the only way to pass is to attend lecture so go. If you can take his class.
One of the best history professors at FSU. Professional, patient, and generous. Papers are a snap as he provides the sources and makes it clear what he expects. Tests are the same, multiple choice with some fill in the blank. The textbook is barely needed. Attend class, take good notes and study, you'll make a fine grade.
OMG HE'S SO AMAZING I'M SO ATTRACTED TO HIM YOU HAVE TO TAKE THIS CLASS FROM HIM YOU WILL LOVE IT SO MUCH OMGGGG.
great teacher! easy class, so understandable!
So easy, I have a 100% in here so far. The tests are so easy. All you have to do is go to class everyday & take great notes. He posts key terms online which is what is covered on the exam. There are 2 in class essays, which he gives you the topic for in advance. The only other writing is 150 word paragraph on the exams. He's really nice & funny!
Great teacher. His lectures are detailed and he definitely keeps you interested. Funny guy and super nice. His tests are straight forward and soo easy, he really helps you prepare for them. Only two in-class essays where the topic is provided in advance. Definitely recommend taking this class and Dr. Sheppard if you can!
Dr. Sheppard's awesome, hes really approachable and funny. The class is fairly easy, he gives good lectures and if you take notes and study some, you'll finish with an A. You rarely ever use the textbook (you could get away with not buying it).
Dr. Sheppard is one of the greatest teachers i have had. He is funny and makes class fun. If you just show up, take notes, and look over them for 20 minutes, you'll get an A. Textbooks weren't used
Great teacher, extremely knowledgeable, very nice guy. Take him if you can.
LOVED this teacher. I hate history but he makes it so fun. By far one of my favorite class. He really cares about his students and walks around talking to students before class. He makes the funniest jokes. 5 quizzes, but you have to go to class to get them. Most of the quizzes are freebies. I would take this class/another class taught by him again
one of the greatest teachers on campus. he really cares about his students and is very approachable. take him if you can.
He is the boss. the class is too easy and he is entertaining. tim tebow sucks
Very easy he is the best history teacher considering i hate history. His tests are really easy multiple chose, fill in the blank with a word bank and an essay question that sometimes he allows you to use your notes. Attendance is good because his pop quizes can be as easy as you just writing you name on a sheet of paper but he does drop to quizes
AWESOME teacher. Has so much enthusiasm for the subject. Great 1980s trivia thrown in for fun. Really cool guy and really knows his stuff!
I like his style of teaching, very clear and very funny. He likes to use sports jokes which kept me interested.2 1500 word essays were tough but tests were multiple choice. Going to class will help.
So far my favorite professor! cracks random and funny jokes throughout the class. two in-class essays, and exams were cake. Lectures were very enjoyable!
GREATEST TEACHER EVER! Super funny and easiest A you can get!
This is one of the easiest A's you will get at FSU. If you attend class and take notes, you will pass. Take this class & professor. You wont regret it!
BEST TEACHER EVER! Although his class is a gordon rule and topic is not very interesting he is a great professor! He cracks jokes all the time and really wants you to succeed. Quizzes are very easy as well as tests. 2 in class essay which you get the prompt way ahead of time. EASY A and a fun teacher! Keep quiet while he lectures and you will be fi
Easy class. He really wants his students to do well. Just take notes and go to class and there should be no problem. Tests are multiple choice and quizzes are both easy and straight foward. for in class essays he tells you the prompt ahead of time. Sometimes a bit boring but you will def do well this class.
Such an easy class. Just 3 tests (no final) and two 1500 essays. Grades pretty easy. Just take notes and study them the day before the test and you're sure to get an A. I love Jonathan!
Probably one of the greatest professors I've had in college. His lectures are so interesting and he is so willing to help you and answer any questions. I have never heard him say he wouldn't repeat something or wouldn't clarify something. Always there for students after class. GREAT PROFESSOR!
Not a lot of work. easy class if you go take notes and study. No stress and keeps it interesting with his funny jokes. TAKE HIM
Go to class take notes and you have an A. If you cant get an A in the class you shouldnt be at FSU. That easy
GREAT CLASS!! Don't take it with anyone else. Go to class take notes and light studying and you should be fine. An A is pretty easy!
Love Dr. Sheppard! He made a really depressing and boring subject funny. Very easy exam formats. 2 exams w/ essays, 2 in class essays, and and final exam w/ no essay. There are also pop quizzes in class that count for 10% of your grade but you won't mind going to his class anyway. He is awesome, easiest class I've taken and funny too.
Great teacher! He made history extremely interesting and enjoyable through presenting his lectures in a fun, easy way. He's pretty funny as well. The tests are very simply formatted and as long as you pay attention and take notes there's no reason NOT to get an A! But don't buy the textbook, it was never used.Definitely take Sheppard, he's the best
Had him for US history as a freshman and I was retarded and never went to class, so I got a C- (maybe the TA's paper grading had an affect)... then senior year I took his FL History class and actually went to class, which resulted in an easy A. He is a funny guy and if you take any notes then you should do very well on the exam. Tim Tebow sucks
Took it over the summer the tests were impossible but the papers were easy. Easier class during the regular school year.
This teacher is amazing!! He deeply cares for each student and tries to get to know each student by name! If you make it an effort to get to talk to him he will remember you and it will be towards your benefit! Essays are easy and the exams are not bad. Just try to get an A on one or two and you'll get an A for sure! Take him!!
i loveee dr.sheppard! such an easy class and he makes the material interesting and funny. i would definitely recommend him to anyone...i wish i could have another class with him!!
I thought Dr. Sheppard was a very nice guy. He is extremely competent and helpful. Also, he is very cute!
What a great professor! I never thought I would like american history as much as I enjoyed his class. The class is not the easiest but he is very clear and Dr. Sheppard is probably the best professor in the history department.
I would highly recommend Dr. Sheppard! He makes the otherwise boring material interesting w his sense of humor. Just make sure to go to class (easy pop quizzes), take decent notes (no dates needed/or minute details)and study an hour before the test, easy A. The essay prompts are easy as well. Hardly an work necessary outside of class.
DR. Sheppard is the man! He is so fun and explains things so that everybody can a) understand him b)enjoy it and most importantly c) prepares you for the test.
Makes class interesting and tests are straight from his notes. He does talk a bit fast sometimes but breaks up information with jokes and side comments. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED especially if you aren't a history person like me. I loved his class!! 2 papers to get the gordon rule credit he goes over alot of what you need for them in class lectures.
Excellent professor. His class is very interesting. Extremely nice and he has a great sense of humor. He will help you with anything. No books are required. You just need to attend every class and take good notes.
History used to be my most dreaded and worst subject. However, AMH was my favorite class this semester. Sheppard made it extremely interesting and fun while also explaining everything very clearly. If you take good notes during class and know all the words on the study guides, you will make A's on the tests. Best teacher I've ever had.
Love this teacher!! I hate history, but he makes his lectures really to the point and interesting. His tests are easy, just look over good notes. Papers are graded by his TA (who is kinda a hard ass), but make sure you have a good thesis, intro/conclusion. In addition, (kind of) have to go to class to get the 5 attendance quiz points.
History of the Am West was an awesome class. I learned so much that was never covered in any intro classes. Wonderful lecturer. He is captivating and quite funny. He cares for his students and after taking a course with Dr. Jones, his tests are a breeze. 2 500wrd book reports that are painless. GREAT professor. I'll try to take him again.
I cant say enough about Dr. Sheppard. He makes history fun. He truly cares about his students. He is very Southern and funny and keeps his own politics out of the class unlike most teachers. Papers are a Breez and dont have to be perfect grammar which is nice. Go to class if you want to get an A but can do well if you dont. Best teacher i have had.
Don't take this class with anyone but Dr. Sheppard!
Great professor with a sense of humor. Lectures are interesting and helps keep you going to class since you can't afford to skip any. 10-12 pg paper wasn't too bad and 2 exams are easy if you attend class and take good notes. Only issue I had was he was slow replying to emails (big deal.)
I took him in my Bryan Hall living learning class. He is a GREAT professor. He is extremely helpful and is pretty funny. He is a really cool guy and is really laid back. I loved this class!!! If you show up and do the work you can definitely get an A! I 100% recommend him
probably one of the best teachers I have ever had at FSU. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH ANYONE BUT HIM. He doesn't try to trick you on any tests. He is very clear in all of his lectures.. and even makes his lessons interesting and really funny. He is a cutie and you won't mind going to the class at all. take this class for sure.
He is an absolutely amazing professor! Lectures are interesting and entertaining. If you attend class you will do fine in the class! Don't take this class with anyone but him!
BEST PROF EVER!!!!! Lectures werent mandatory, but his tests were only based off the notes. His power points dont go into great detail, so take good notes in class. TAs graded the papers pretty hard. The papers are what sent me to a B+ in the class. Lowest test score for me was 94%with just reading thru notes once. Taking this class, best decision
Sheppard is the man. You've lost your mind if you don't take his class..for real.
best teacher i've had in my 4 years. i want to take another history class just so i can have him as a teacher. don't bother taking a history class with anyone else!
Great teacher! Must go to class, his tests revolve around notes taken unless you buy notes from someone. He's a real nice guy. TAs grade papers a little hard but make sure to go to his office hours, he WILL help you with your grade. Talks about history as if it were gossip. Really funny guy!
SUPER FUNNY GUY! I HATE history, but he made the class bearable! I reccomend him! The class was not the easiest because the papers were dull, and history tests are no usually fun, but if you need a gordon rule, it is not too bad.
Best professor I've had so far at FSU. Tests are super up front, no tricky questions. Everything is literally straight from the notes. No need for the textbook. TA's grade pretty tough but they're very willing to help. If you don't go to a TA at least once on each paper, you won't get an A. But he rocks. Manageble class. He's funny. I RECOMMEND him
I loved him as a professor! I love history and there's not many good history teachers out in the world, but he's brilliant. I've changed my minor to history because of him. YOU HAVE TO GO TO CLASS to pass. He lectures and you write down what he says. That's the way his class goes but his lectures are entertaining. I enjoy going to his class at 9am
TAKE THIS TEACHER. He is so nice and is so passionate about the information and really cares about his students learning the info too. I absolutely hate history but I actually enjoyed this class! He often lets you out early and the tests are very east as long as you have been going to class and taking good notes!
This guy is the man. Very engaging and hilarious. I enjoyed going to class thursday nights. He had a term list you could print out and bring to class so it wasn't like you were taking notes blindly. Will randomly tell a story here and there and they are always worth listening to. The kind of guy you wouldn't mind having at your tailgate.
He's a really good professor. If you pay attention, you'll learn a lot and he makes it easy to pay attention. He's very personable and has fair expectations. The test are graded fairly and the term paper is graded beyond fairly. Almost every person in my class got above a 90 on the paper. Next semester will be my 3rd time taking him in 5 semesters.
I adore Dr. Sheppard. He is absolutely hilarious and turned a dry boring subject into something that was interesting and engaging. The tests were based only on the notes for the class because there was no text book, so you have to go to class. Easily my favorite prof at FSU
Awesome professor. Gets along with every student, not to mention that he lectures years of history predominantly from memory. He doesn't take attendance but both semesters I have had him, there was no textbook so your only source of information is the lecture (making attendance kind of mandatory).
tHIS IS ONE OF THE EASIEST HISTORY CLASSES TO TAKE. IM REALLY NOT A HISTORY PERSON BUT HE MADE ME FEEL LIKE I WAS. hE COMPARES EVENT/PEOPLE FROM BACK THEN TO EVENTS/PEOPLE TODAY. hIS LECTURES ARE STRAIGHT FORWARD AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND. THERE IS NO WAY THAT YOU CANT PASS THIS CLASS.
Funny guy. Good class.
