A great guy, the only problem is if you have him for morning classes, he's a bit boring. But, that doesn't mean that he's a helpful professor.

He is very smart and sometimes boring. He talks too much sometimes. But, I really did learn a lot in his class. He is willing to help if you ask for it. make sure to read!!!!

I don't know who the rest of you people think you are, but this is college, and although it may not be Harvard, it's sitll college! I think he did an excellent job presenting the material. In fact, I think my writing has improved because of taking this class. He always has something interesting to say and does not mind other points of view.

This professor has been trashed by others in this posting, and I don't why! He is professional and meticulous, and his rating sheets tell you everything you need to know to become a serious writer of term papers, something we were ill-prepared for in high school. Tough but fair. Harvard class at LCCC prices.

This professor taught me more about professional writing in one semester than I learned in 4 years of high school. He is as tough as he needs to be. I found him extremely cooperative and helpful. His dry sense of humor and impersonations are quite funny :-) While some of the diction may seem overwhelming, I enjoyed many of the assigned readings.

Stellar teacher, stellar class. ;) Mr. Sponsler is always willing to help and is very accessible. His gift for verbal precision and his ready dry wit makes talking to him both in and out of class very enjoyable.

dreaded taking this class because it was not interesting and rather dull. The grading is tough and the work is tedious. He is approachable and helpful when you go to him and ask for help. One thing for sure; you must earn the grade, and there is no such thing in his book as flexible grading.

Think: if you want to learn to think critically, read critically, write critically, and have critical conversations about literature, writing, and life, take Mr S. If not, take someone else. You have to be willing to think and write differently than you have in the past to do well in this course. Really hard course, but worth the work.

Mr. Sponsler is an excellent professor. He knows how to teach and he is very helpful. Also, he is very handsome. His class is amazing.

I have had him before and even though I got a C in his class for ENG 105 I decided to take him again for 106. He is very smart and funny, very helpful, yes he is a tough grader but his class really helped me to develop my writing skills. WORTH THE WORK, class is always interesting. He'll work with you if you have a problem. GREAT PROFESSOR!

One of the best professors I've had. Brilliant with a sharp wit, stimulating and concise lectures, very conscientious and willing to help. My writing improved dramatically in his classes. Challenges students to produce their best work possible, which is what we're in school for, isn't it? Don't take this Ivy-League quality professor for granted!

Challenges you to do your best. I will admit to getting a little frustrated during the semester, but in the end it was worth it. My writing and analysis skills improved greatly because of his class. He is also very willing to help you if you ask.

Jonathan Sponsler is the best English teacher I have ever had, in general. He is a difficult grader, however he is more then willing to work with students if they ask for help, and genuinely want to learn. Don't miss the opportunity to take any of his courses.

Mr. Sponsler is a fantastic teacher. Expects much of you, but come on kids, this is college, not grade school. Stop whining about it being too hard. It's supposed to be. Classes are fun, engaged. If you are going to take Mr. S, I would recommend a higher level course. He doesn't much like teaching Eng105 and 106 since they're mandatory for us.

Dry sense of humor.

Sponsler is the man! Anyone who has anything bad to say about the guy just doesn't appreciate how a true college professor should work. Yeah, his sense of humor is dry, but he is a genuine guy with a good heart and willing to help out struggling students. He knows his class is hard, which is why he goes out of his way to help anyone who asks.

His class is the first class where I have actually had to think about things, and not just regurgitate information. You will work in his class, but that's what you are there for,and his job is to teach you.

I see a lot of complaints. I got a C as a final and I went out and celebrated. He is hard but my final I didn't have to redo. I did spent 40 hours(3 days) on the paper before I turned it in. If you think you can breeze by his course. FORGET IT!!!!! He does give you an example of a perfect paper. I realized I couldn't do it but I tried and passed.

His class is hard, that is not up for debate, he is not an easy "A". He will make you work. Basically he demands that you stretch your mind. Don't expect instant feed back either, he is horrible at grading papers in a timely manner. He really should be teaching at a Major Univ, at the graduate school level though, not a CC.

I'm not going to lie, he's a tough professor who knows what he wants from his students. He gave very constructive criticism to my papers which helped me improve and reach my full potential by the end of the semester. Girls, he's funny and pretty cute which makes class super enjoyable. Overall, I'm glad I had him as a professor.

Wow! I am surprised to see all these negative comments. I am taking him this semester and I enjoy his class. Its hard but this is college, not highschool. Its supposed to be hard. people who think hes full of himself must be really insecure. If you like reading, writing, and thinking, hes a good teacher. If your lazy, forget it.

This guy is awesome! If your looking to improve your writing, he's the prof for you. Hes a strict grader but its worth it if your looking to learn and improve yourself

His jokes are hilarious. He had our class busting up laughing almost every day. Everyone thinks "this is going to be a great semester." However, I cannot stress enough how hard it was. His comments are demeaning. His essay requirements are vague (Unless you are English-minded). Very enjoyable in person, but the online transformation is scary.

This is a very tough professor for the first English to take at LCCC. You can get the feeling that he is talking down upon you sometimes. However, I did learn something from his class when It comes to writing research papers. Sponsler is not a guy to drop but you have to work hard for him and he will help you if he sees that. Respect him.

Really intelligent guy. Class is only difficult if you are not interested or willing to put in your best effort. Funny guy also. Does assign a lot of homework though..

Prof. Spohn's lawyer is the finest professor in all of American colleges and universities. If you have the opportunity to take anyone of his classes do it. Run to advising and sign up.

I personally loved this class and it was my favorite this semester; however, I would only recommend him to other students who already enjoy reading and writing. He's a tough grader, so if English isn't your strong suit, you may struggle in his class. He's hilarious though, and the class discussions were always filled with intelligent conversation.

He had a new grading system this semester. If you wanted and A do the A project, B do the B project, C do the C project, etc. They were passfail assignments. You have to work for the grade you want but it's worth it. We're not in high school anymore people so stop complaining and focus. That's what it takes to get the grade you want.

Dedicated to helping his students improve, he does not give loose compliments, but gives helpful feedback and really makes you think with his writing intensive course. I recommend this course to anyone who shares his love of literature and is able to devote time and effort to his assignments. This was the most rewarding course I have taken.

Expects you to read, think, write, care. If you don't care, you will not even be able to fake it! If you care, you might put too much time in. Lots of group activities, not painful, usually worth it. No group projects. Takes too long to return projects, expects you to keep track of what you have done. Interesting discussions. Learned a lot.

Hands down, best professor I have ever had at LCCC. If you work hard in his class you will be pleased with the outcome. Always do your homework, give yourself time to do the work, put effort into your work, show up for class and participate. He's great.

Eng 106 with JS was tough, but as long as you do the work and follow the specifications you are sure to get a good grade. Be ready to put time in and read. Basically, just go to class and do your work.

I left that class thinking more about things than any other class I've taken. This guy is hilarious, he genuinely cares about his students, and he is a really fair grader. This class is not for the lazy. But put in hard work and dedicate yourself and you will do fine.

Take his class! Don't be afraid about what other reviewers are saying about him. He is really funny and challenges you. This is college. Don't expect A's to just be given to you. Sponsler is like broccoli give 'em a chance!

TAKE HIM. He is going to really help you improve your writing-an essential skill in college. Students who complain about him are lazy or just weak students. He isn't hard but he's not just going to hand you an A, either.

This is what I expected from a professor. Students are so used to being handed everything in high school on a silver plate. This is a quality professor who will improve your skills that you will eventually need in the workforce. I would take him again if I could. He made me a stronger writer and perfected my critical thinking skills.

If you hope to attend grad school then impress Sponsler. No other teacher will push you and set you up for success.

Great prof, especially in upper level courses. Dry sense of humor and loves what he does. Whiners that hated him probably didn't put in the effort. Grow up boys and girls. This is college, not a summer job. You're supposed to work hard, it makes you a better academic.

I took Prof. Sponsler's class in high school and he was the push I needed to become an English major. Granted I was only taking one college-level course, I did well and dedicated a LOT of time to his homework and papers. I became such a better reader and writer in the process & he prepared me for college-level work.

If you have a burning curiosity about what it might have been like to participate in the Bataan Death March during World War II, then by all means register for Sponsler's section of ENG 106. Like they say in the Monty Python sketch: "He was a cruel man ... but fair."

Wonderful professor- very dry but humerus. He assigns a good amount of reading and writing, but it's a WRITING course. He pushes students to their best if they are willing to work for it. He helped me become a much better writer and more analytical reader. For anyone who complains: it's a COLLEGE ENGLISH COURSE. You have to work for it. Sorry. : )

This review is for his ENG 201 World Literature I section from Fall 2016. I still consider him the best professor that I have had so far at LCCC. However, this 200 level class was surprisingly easier than his ENG 106 class which I took the previous semester. He is so busy with his new administration duties and it affects his teaching.

He's funny and sarcastic, and picks a good selection of readings. His grading system is confusing at first, but you essentially pick your own grade. I went for all the A assignments, they're a little challenging, but worth wile. There was a lot of homework, but if you miss an assignment, you can make up for it by participating in class.

Everything is relative. When I took ENG 201, it seemed at times that Sponsler was just over-scheduled. in retrospect, his World Lit I course was far superior to the World Lit II that I am currently taking with another professor. Sponsler's study questions and module projects were substantive and made you read and think critically.

LOTS of reading and a LOTS of questions . Critical thinking and analyzing involved. Time consuming! but I learned more in this class than any other. Teacher communicates, works with you and is happy to help you succeed. If this is your major, definitely take this class if you are looking to gain educational value. Reading about early America.

Sponsler is the man. Easily one of the best and funniest profs I've had. Grading can be tough but not unreasonable. I see a lot of people complaining about the work load, but the bottom line is he's doing a better job preparing students for University than most professors at LCCC.

Sponsler was easily the best professor I took in the English department and one of LCCCs best. He is thorough in his explanations/expectations for assignments, and really prepares you for more rigorous courses you reach in the 300-400 levels. His jokes were hit or miss, but seriously wish I could finish the rest of my English courses with him.

Mr. S is an excellent professor. He can be intimidating, but he genuinely cares about his students. He will not give anyone a grade that they did not earn and he recognizes and respects growth. This is college-there's no reward for effort alone. The only complaint I would give is that he doesn't grade/return assignments in a timely manner.

He can be rude sometimes, is slow to return assignments, and gives very little feedback (depending on who you are, apparently) so your hours of effort might feel like a waste. But he is a genuine guy with a wealth of knowledge and sarcasm. If you like stickers, write well, and actually show up to class, you will enjoy him. He is cool enough indeed.

People who hate him probably never go to class, don't know what sarcasm is, or suck at writing and don't want to improve. If you need his help, ask. If he offends you, say so. Don't expect him to read your mind and then trash him. Don't take him if you lack the time or resources. Only passionate students will survive. He's one of the best here.

This class was very hard and the professor knew that and still made it 100% doable for EVERY student. He was very accessible outside of class and his token policy became my best friend. He was very lenient with everyone and I enjoyed his class and his level of instruction. I took his honors section and received great mentoring from him! Good class!

Sponsler is the best professor at LCCC. His courses are some of the few taught at LCCC that really are college-level courses rather than just something for a 13th and 14th grade extension of K-12 secondary education. You get your money's worth when you take his courses.

He is one of the finest professors at LCCC. I think its a blessing to be his student .

This professor is inspirational

Sponsler was my favorite professor at lccc. I had him for intro to literature and world literature. He teaches you how to use your brain and because of his classes I have become a better student. He may seem tough but it is well worth the invested effort.

Professor Sponsler was one of my favorite professors at LCCC. As someone who teaches literature-based courses, he encourages discussion about interpretation and subject matter well. Grades fairly, easy to communicate with, and amazingly dry humor. In a literature course, you have to read though, so be prepared to do so.

Very wordy especially in his instructions. Wordy is not always better, and sometimes his wordiness made things very confusing. Plus, the homework took HOURS. Grades for big projects take a while to get inputted. It definitely would be a difficult class especially for individuals without a strong basis in reading and writing.

If you can take a different professor, do. However, if you need to take him dont stress. As long as you stay on top of things and make a little extra time to study and complete assignments, you'll be ok!
