He's a young professor, really corny. The information he covers is very basic and it is easy to miss key details that will help you pass the test. Record lectures and take notes based off of them and this will be an easy A. For the final he allows you copy the Q&A from previous test so attend that office hours session and you will be golden.
Professor Steplyk is awesome. I was a little nervous to take him cause of lack of reviews but hes great. If you take notes youll do great and learn so much. His lecture is not boring & I actually enjoy coming to class. On top of it he throws corny and funny jokes, very cool professor! Definitely recommend him!
He's a nice guy but you really have to study to pass, doesn't give a study guide for test and no extra credit.
Dr. Steplyk is a good professor. His lectures are interesting and he is funny. Echo 360 was an option. 3 tests, 3 assignments, one book review. All assignments were easy. Lots of possible points (1000 for my class). The text was not necessary. Overall, I would recommend this professor.
Steplyk is a great professor. His tests compose of around 45 questions with an essay at the end. There are 3 exams and then the final. His final is 50 questions from the first 3 exams and the last 50 are questions from his most recent lectures after the 3rd test. There are textbooks he requires, but I almost rarely used them. There is a book review
His test are pretty easy if you go to lecture and write down what he says. Don't buy the textbook he only ask one question from it on the test. He gave us a 30 point curve at the end of the semester. The essay isn't portion on the test isn't hard but yeah take him
I took Dr. Steplyk in spring 2018. his lectures are all pictures, so take good notes. he gives a book report at the end of the semester which is easy if you try. his final is cumulative, so don't forget your information
Pay attention to the little details of the lectures. He throws curve balls on all exams.
Don't take his class unless you're majoring in History. His lectures are fun and he's a funny guy but his tests and assignments are tough. So if you're some other science or engineering majors like myself, I strongly recommend not to take his class. If you want to know History in detail or majoring in History, you can ignore my comment
I loved having Steplyk as a professor. I wish I could take him again! Very funny and lectures are digestible, which is important because they are what the tests are based on. Don't really have to read the 'textbook' and the few assignments given are fairly easy, but make sure you do well as there are only abound 10 grades entered including tests.
He knows his materials very well. Makes the lecture super interesting and often jokes around here and there. However, the entire semester is composed of 3 tests and a essay that go with each. Multiple choice questions are easy but he grades the essay thoroughly. There are also 3 extra document assignments which is easy. Final exam is composite.
Overall awesome professor. He extends deadlines a lot, very passionate lectures and seems like an extremely nice and understanding man. As long as you pay attention to lectures or you read good notes, you will be prepared for the tests. I think he's judged way to severely on here. I actually might miss taking this class.
Wonderful and engaging teacher and grades very politely. The class is easy if you listen to him during the lectures. Almost everything on the four tests are from lecture. There is a book review paper due towards the end of the semester and a couple document assignments, but the class is an easy A and the teacher himself is incredibly knowledgeable.
Professor Steplyk is a nice guy but a bit tough. His tests consist of 50 multiple choice questions and an essay at the end which are based on lectures. A lot of information is given during his lectures and he puts down questions which he mentions only slightly. Also, an essay shouldn't be on the exam because that brings on bias opinions.
He's amazing, the lecture is full of fun and the tests are easy if you take good notes and study for it. I enjoyed going to his class and listening to the history stories.
He was a great professor that had fun and entertaining lectures. The tests were somewhat difficult but if you pay attention to the lectures and take good notes then you should get a good grade.
I've always hated history but he made lectures interesting & memorable. Tests are completely lecture based, I didn't touch the textbook. Memorize everything he says (dates aren't important) and you'll make A's on every test. Gave an easy extra credit opportunity at the end of the semester that'll boost your grade (additional 3-5% on final grade)
There is a book report that you MUST do that's due at the end of the semester, but start reading ASAP! Attending class will make the exams a lot easier because it's essentially memorization. The professor studies war-tactics so those are his appeals/go-to information for exams! (Also for the book review). Work for your grade!!!!!!
I absolutely loved Dr. Steplyk! He is passionate and always to the point when teaching material. Also outlined key info for exams. Doing the book review was a bit more challenging but nothing more than your basic book report. Just show up to class, take good notes, and watch the recordings of his lectures. History was way less boring with this prof
Dr. Steplyk is a great lecturer and easy grader. I took a 5-week summer course with him and it was by far the least stressful course Ive ever taken. His exams are 100% lecture based unless otherwise noted, so you ideally need perfect attendance. I earned an A and found it easy to do so in his class as there is minimal homework and outside reading.
Steplyk is great, very clearly passionate about history. His lectures are a bit dense with information but they're not too boring. His tests are 100% lecture based (at least for 1301). His exams are half multiple choice, half essay. He's not too tough on the essay part but you should know how to write.
HIGHLY underrated history professor. took his class a whole year ago and its still my favorite by far. its like Tom Hanks is lecturing about american history, and hes so passionate and knowledgeable. as long as you pay attention in lecture, youll do fine on the tests and you dont need to buy the book.
gives fun and engaging lectures. he goes over everything you need for the test and some fun facts that you will probably enjoy having. this is the first class at UTA where I learned something rather than just memorizing facts
Makes history super entertaining. If you pay attention to lectures and don't skip you should be fine. He really knows his stuff and is a really good story teller, which makes remembering things easy.
I had lectures for an hour and a half, honestly, they werent as bad and he did a pretty nice job of telling you what was important and what wasnt. My grade was calculated on 4 tests (including a final I haven't took yet) 3 easy assignments and a long book review. The 3 exams were multiple choice and an essay. The final is a 100 question comprehensi
You don't need to read the online textbook, but he requires us to read McPherson for a book review. The Doc assignments were always about the topic he was about to teach on which made some of them hard, but usually they're easy. He's very understanding & let's you submit online, paper, or email. Makes lots of puns & is passionate about History.
Steplyk is a great professor. As long as you take good notes and study, you will pass the class. His exam material completely comes from the lectures. Therefore, it's recommended you go to class, when you can. He did utilize Echo 360 this semester, which is an option if you can't make it to class.
Dr. Steplyk is such an active teacher! His class was enjoyable and his exams were so direct! I enjoyed his class and would definitely take him again!!!! He is also very understanding and is open to taking another look into your essay if you dont agree with your grade! Good professor and good person!
The best history professor I've ever had. Just an all around great person, he makes history fun and interesting! Tests are super straightforward and easy.
He has a passion for what he teaches and tries to make lectures fun as possible. If you take decent notes on his lectures, test will not be that hard but listening to them is a must. There's a book review but it's okay, just don't try to wait last minute if trying to get a good grade. He's for sure nowhere near the typical boring history professor.
The best history teacher ever. Makes history very easy to understand. He wants you to succeed. There is one book review and three document quizzes. Tests are primarily based on lectures. He provides engaging lectures, so just pay attention and take notes, you will be set.
Professor Steplyk's class is the most interesting class I've ever taken. Since he is a civil war historian he really knows what he is talking about. The book review for this class isn't very hard if you actually read the book. I truly enjoyed his class and I suggest everyone to take him.
Going to lectures and taking good notes will help. Test are somewhat hard but as long as you go,have your notes and study you will be fine. Little details in lectures count. You will write a book review paper.
At first this class seemed super overwhelming to me mainly because of the way it was set up online. I probably would have had an easier time joining synchronous lectures because its a lot of work you do on your own. The untests and essays are pretty easy grades, you just really have to make time for the work and read the textbook.
I signed up to take this in person but it switched to online. Instead of normal tests, in this course you have untests which is like writing your own test. You also complete a signature paper. Overall lots of writing, but thats expected. Also there are a few discussion posts you need to participate in. Overall not too difficult.
Im not super smart but his online class this semester was pretty easy. You do untests which is where you create the tests. If you fallow the rubric and the questions are moderately thought out and hard youll do good. He grades very easy. I got 90+ on all. You also have to write an essay. I just did stuff last minute and got a easy A.
Easiest class ever with an adequate amount of work. As a student who needs to take this class as a preqreq, it's a godsend as to how chill and nice this professor is with grades. Just do your part, follow the rubric, and you'll pass this class without a doubt.
Not a bad professor or class, personally I am not someone who can learn just listening to someone lecture. It would be easier if his note slides had words on them, but he only has pictures and then speaks for the images, then some dates listed as well. He is engaged with his students which good, and he is very passionate about the lessons.
Tests are lecture heavy but are open-note and on canvas, all multiple choice except for the last question which is in essay format, but write 2 to 3 paragraphs, and your good. Doc Assignments are easy too on canvas like everything else, and about 10 questions or less. There's also a book report at the end of the semester. Attendance not mandatory.
Really passionate about history, def knows his stuff. Tests are lecture-heavy, so I recommend going to class sometimes, but it's open-note, so they're not bad. Lectures consist of slides with only pictures in them, he just talks about them and sometimes will show a video related to the topic. Overall really easy class, everything's on canvas.
Super easy class but Dr. Steplyk makes it fun. Super understanding and knowledgeable. Grade based off of 3 tests, essay, 3 super easy assignments, and a final. If you pay attention to lectures, which are engaging, and take basic notes, you'll do fine. Tests were online, lectures were all recorded, due dates extended for like everything. Take him!!!
For this class being a 1000-survey level class, I would say that there is way too much work. There are 4 exams total, and a lot of the content on the exams are direct quotes of what he says in lecture, which are speech heavy. There are not many words on ppts. There is an extensive book review which i thought was unnecessary for a 1000-level class.
Great professor! He's very kind and understanding towards students. The tests are pretty much entirely based on the lectures so you definitely need to attend class or at least watch the recordings. There's an adequate amount of work but overall easy class.
Participation is crucial. If I was able to drop this class, I would have. There's a lot of work to be done just in the first week. The coursework itself isn't hard, it's just A LOT.
his entire exam is straight off of his lectures BUT you have to actually go to class or watch on echo360 cause he doesnt post anything else to help you last minute study. very very lecture heavy. he's okay at best. nice guy just so so boring.
saving y'all some time- his exams are no longer open note since covid is "over." his exams are in person on paper with a scantron.
This professor is very boring and he is a heavy grader. He doesn't give you time or sources to prepare for exams. He was also very cringe. Please take a different professor if possible.
would never take this professor ever again. he graded really hard as someone who cares for my grades, I tried my very best, attended every single lecture took notes, and it still wasn't enough to prepare me for the tests he gave. 1-2 page essays with every test. also the book review was useless. not to mention the man gives an uncomfortable vibe.
Dr. Steplyk is nice. There are primarily only pictures in his PowerPoint, so you need to go to his class or watch Echo360 to understand the exam concepts. We have in-person exams; his exams are not that bad. He allows students to come to his office hours to review old exams and prepare for the final.
I enjoyed his lectures and the way he made history feel fun. I always looked forward to lectures.
Professor Steplyk was great, he always seemed passionate whenever he gave a lecture and it also helped that some other students felt motivated by him as well. I didn't get to know him well but he was always available whenever I needed to message him. Be sure to pay attention to the lectures and don't procrastinate even if there isn't much work.
Attendance isn't mandatory but his exams are very lecture heavy so make sure to take notes. There isn't really a lot of work given but the exams are easy if you study. He is also accessible outside of class and you can come in during his office hours and lets you review your exam to be better prepared for the final.
Exams correlate directly to lectures, one book report, a few assignments. All lectures are posted online but go to class anyways, trust.
Very passionate about history. Classes are structured around lectures, so if you miss, go back and watch the recording. Taking notes is essential to passing exams. 3 exams and a book review. If you pay attention during lectures and take decent notes you should be fine. Not much outside work. There is a free textbook available, but I never used it.
The exams are straight from the lectures. Dr. Steplyk tries his best to emphasize the material that will be on the exam. Going to lecture & rewatching the lectures are crucial for doing well on the exams as it is basically all memorization.
This course was online, so our discussion participation weighed quite a bit on our grade and these were due every 2-3 days. We also had 4 papers spread out through the semester. Overall, not a bad class but just so much work in my opinion lol
Silly guy who is very passionate about history. Tests are literally the lectures word for word. He also records lectures in case you miss a class. Other work like his essay and reading assignments are also super easy, no trick questions to them, and graded easy. You could bomb the final and still get out with an A if you ace the first few tests/HW
The professor was really friendly and engaged the students in the material. Very passionate about history. The TAs provide really good study guides. USE THEM! They helped so much. Also, do your best to not miss class. You will quickly fall behind if you do. Lastly, start the book review as soon as possible, trust. Very straightforward class.
Great prof. Attendence is not mandatory, but everything you'll need to know for exams is through lectures, so if you don't go, you should rewatch through echo360. Taking notes is really important and the study guides help a lot. Gives lots of extra points through extra credit and bringing your own scantron.
Lectures are like long, enjoyable bedtime stories because he's very passionate about history. That being said, his knowledge is so extensive that he does not have a bunch of bullet points and notes on his slides. Therefore, it is super important to listen carefully and write notes.
I loved this professor, his exams are definitely lecture based but attendance is not mandatory so I always watch echo360 if I can't attend. He provides exam reviews that are basically everything that show up on the exam. He is not a harsh grader either. I am taking him again for 1302.
Great and fun lectures, really gets you going and makes history actually fun. Exams were not very hard as long as you study the study guides he gives out. Definitely a good one. Would Def take again.
super nice, no attendance recorded lectures!
Wouldn't take his class again, he gives more opportunities to the students that attend lectures.
Attendance is not required but suggested. Exams have essays in them. Just study the study guides provided and your fine. He like to do impressions.
He's a good professor and I do recommend him but just know that all the test info is in the study guides and all that is from the lectures and the lectures are long (they are recorded). He has 4 exams, 4 short assignments and 1 essay, that's all pretty easy to do. He makes it easy to get an A in the class
Great Professor! Makes history interesting, and work load is not hard. As long as you do good on the 4 tests and the 1 essay your grade will be fine, and you'll learn a lot!
I like this professor very much. I didn't attend every lecture, but he offers video lectures via echo360 on canvas if you miss a class. Not many assignments, just make sure to do the best you can and you will be fine. There is a major essay worth about 25% in this class, so if you cant write well at all, try to look for another professor.
Gives good lectures and gives plenty of resources to succeed, if all you care about is passing you will like this class. However his teaching of history seems plagued by political bias and was never terribly engaging. I didn't really learn anything in this class, and some of the information was straight up false, so take it with a grain of salt.
I'm not going to lie I never attended class. BUT you need to watch the lectures on Echo360 because EVERYTHING on the exams are on Echo360. Take notes, pay attention, and review. It's an easy A. Otherwise, great class and he was humorous.
Great professor and lenient grader, easy to pass because he gives good lectures and test reviews. Lectures are on Echo so attendance isn't required but exams are in person. You will have one essay, three simple module assignments, and he offers extra credit. Low stress class would definitely take him again bc he makes history easy to remember.
Class consists of 3 assignments, 3 tests, and a final exam. All the questions come from the lectures, so it's crucial that you attend or watch the recordings. The tests have an essay portion but they aren't hard to answer. Not fan of history, but I found his lectures engaging. You can tell he loves what he does and his class heavily refelcts that.
All material comes from lectures so either attend or watch the.playbacks. Assignments are sparse n easy, but beware of book report.
A lot of people think his lectures are great but to me they are pretty boring. There are three exams, the final, three document assignments and a book review. The tests are too based off of what he says and there are no notes to read except for the ones you write yourself. If I had the option of changing it I would. His exams are in-person.
Lecture-heavy class consists of 3 assignments,3 exams. Overall, I would take him again. Anyone who rates him low just didn't show up to class. He also adds funny commentary to his lectures, which is why I think he's a good professor. If you skip, you probably won't pass since exams are based on the material he covers in class.
Easy class if you know how to take notes in a lecture and study. Attendance isn't mandatory but still go. Exams and primary based on lectures. Only thing I'd say I didn't like was the book review, other than that great class. Overall he's not bad at all
Good lectures and you can tell he enjoys what he's teaching. Attendance isn't required, but I recommend it as tests are based on it. Assignments aren't heavy, and you'll learn more than you do with homework. I would take him again if I could
Steplyk seems like a great professor, the class is just boring. Slides are bare, meaning you have to focus more on what he says. This also aligns with tests; They match his words more than slides or anything else. He seems very passionate and kind though. 3 exams each include an essay. Just study and it should be fine. Assignments are pretty easy.
Good and engaging lectures that you have the option of watching online or in person. There isn't much writing on the slides themselves, so its important to pay attention to what he says. None of the tests/assignments were difficult, and he makes helpful study guides. Its clear he's very passionate about what he teaches. I recommend his class! :)
His class is pretty chill, feels really fast too. If I'm being honest this class is pretty easy to pass as long as you actually study. He has study guides that really helps for passing the exams, although be aware of the book review it's like the major assignment. Not a lot of homework though. Overall I'm definitely taking this class again :)
Literally on one of the best Profs i've had. super engaging in lectures and exams are super easy as long as you listen to lectures (which are recorded) book review was done last minute and still got an A (graded by TA tho). All exams (except final) are 1/2 writing 1/2 multiple choice but do the review and you'll be fine.
dude was cool didnt have a lot of assignments other than three doc quizzes that were easy and the big book review that you get plenty time on. The test are easy enough if you study his test guides which are helpful.
Honestly, wasn't my favorite class and I usually enjoy history. The professor just read off the slides he did know alot about history though so definitely seemed like a very reliable source, just wished he changed his teaching methods to help students. The TA was a pretty tough grader and I disagree with some of his grades BUT overall a fine class.
