He is very forgiving and he makes it real easy to get a good grade in his class. He gives out extra credit, maybe 6 homework assignments, no final, and the midterm is easy!
He's too lenient and disorganized. You do learn something from the class but not a whole lot. The programming assignments are fairly easy. Midterm and finals are easy. You can get away with an "A" or "B" without learning much.
He is very disorganized. He is more concerned with proofs and not teaching you how to use them. He gives almost no homework. I was pretty lost in his class but somehow managed a B. His grading is easy.
He's pretty irresponsible & lazy. You could probably get an A or B without learning anything.
Easy class if you know how to study from the book. Gets easily frustrated if theres no class participation. On the good side, he gives no hw, grades on a curve early in the semester, and midterms can be retaken. Reviews the section right before we take the quiz also. Its impossible to fail. Don't recommend if maths not your subject.
He teaches very well and eassy to understand and he is very friendly and nice and patient. You can come to his office or computer lab ask him any question, he w explain to you very carefully and make you understand quicly.
The best teacher I ever had. He is very helpfull, willing to help all the time. If Math does not come easy to you. He is the guy to take! You are going to make the class for sure and you will learn a lot. But It is up to YOU, he will not be your MOM. You need to look for help then he will help You. He treats you like an ADULT.
Nice professor, but very easily gives in to student demands. Quizzes and assignments are really easy and all you really need to do is read the book. Tests are almost exactly like the quizzes so not much to study there. Kind of wish we learned more than what the book had though. Overall, nice guy & laid back. Will help outside of class if needed.
Math is not my strongest points when it comes to my studies. I heard horror stories on how Math 55 is hard and alot of work which IT WAS! I needed alot of help and late into the class I needed to make up some work because of low grades. Mr. Traugott was able to take time to help me with what assignments I needed help with and he was also able to l
he is a excellent teacherand i suck at math
I can just say that he is a GREAT instructor. Honestly I would take his class again. HIGHLY recommend him.
You dont need the book. Basically you need the code to access coursecompass. You will do 98% of your work there and then you come to class once a week to do quiz. It is not an easy course but you can do it! Math is my worst subject and he passed me. He is a cool teacher and is always willing to help.
Had him 4 Intro to Game Concepts. Most people dropped, not because of him, but because they were too lazy to do any work and show up(class full of gamers lol). Overall I'd say he's a very helpful teacher, but goes tangent occasionally. He's also very forgiving when it comes to turning work late. Just do your work, he really wants students to pass(:
He is the best math teacher!! he is very friendly...he wants u to pass!!! he helps u out a lot! i had him for summer n being with one teacher everyday for several hours gets tiring! but he is very cool! the BEST teacher!!! His test and hw are easy! the final is open book n notes!!! I recommend him! i would take him again!!!
He is a great teacher!!! Very helpful!!!! He makes things easy, explains them well, and hes always there to help! Since I am really bad at math, I managed to get a B in his class. Despite doing bad on my tests and quizes..I GOT A "B"! So take himmm!!!!!
Great teacher, one of the best i've had at this school and trust me, there are ALOT of horrible teachers here. But traugott is one of the best, clearest, and friendliest ones.
mr jonathan is probably the best instructor i have met in my schooling thus far...
Awful and disorganized!! /if you need a teacher to teach you math, then this is not the teacher for you! He is very lazy, and he seems not to care if you learn or not. I wouldn't recommend him to my dog!!
I could not believe this teacher, he would come to class late, expect you to be there early, and when class was in session he would just play crayons physics in class for 45 min. He was not clear on the course work...BE PERPARED TO TEACHER YOURSELF.
The prior comments say it all!! Be prepared to teach yourself. If you can wait and pick another teacher do it! You won't learn a thing!!!! Lastly, stay away, it is the best advice!
Very disorganized. He seems to wing through his slass. Instead of teaching you, he'll put you in groups and you have to figure it out. He is very lazy, and gets frustrated when there is no class participation in his quasi lectures. You can't have participation if nobody understands the subject matter. You can't make up tests or quizzes. Terrible!
I just dropped the class. I learned nothing and I didn't understand him. I need a teacher to teach me, and it didn't happen here. If you can learn on your own, then you'll be fine, but if you need a teacher to teach you, then this is not the teacher for you.
Decent teacher. Homework was reasonable and if it was too difficult, he had office hours every day except weekends. Expect to rely mainly on your book and to really understand the homework he gives or the tests will really mess up your grades. No excuses, since it's a hybrid course. You have to attend every class or you miss many in-class assignmen
I had gotten all A's in my math classes until now. I really missed a teacher that would teach you, not place you in groups to fend for yourself. I ended up with a C since I had to learn it on my own, and I'm afraid I will have trouble with pre cal since I did not get a good foundation. If you can find a teacher that will work with you.
Teaches essential and makes it interesting. At the time I thought he was teaching me unneeded topic and extra information but this "extra" has come in handy more than once. Very good math teacher - recommended.
Mr. Jonathan Traugott is probably the best instructor I have met in my schooling thus far... He is a decent teacher, Very Helpful, Friendly nature, Homework was reasonable and if it was too difficult, he had office hour to ask questions. I had gotten all A's in my math classes until now. Very good excellent math teacher - recommended.
he is the best teacher ever.he teaches you how to think intuitively.he breaks down all the concepts for you so you can understand it better.he kind of funny too.he is always willing to help and talk to students.
I have him for OO Programming in Java. Pretty cool teacher. Usually assigns a chapter every week. He often pushes back assignment dates. He is not always clear on assignment specifications, but he is also a very lenient grader. His lectures were obviously not planned and usually consisted of him messing around in Java. Very approachable.
This is hands down the best math teacher at Chabot. He is extremely helpful, gives you extra credit points just for attending office hours which is always available to you. He uses Math XL so the textbook really isn't needed. He does all he can to help you pass the class. He use Blackboard so you can keep with your grade. Very much recommended!
I can't stress how great this teacher is. He is always available in the math lab, the final is made up of your old tests. He has a TA, I had him for Math 65 and 55. I wish he was teaching stats. He was so clear, funny, he really cares about his students. We sometimes played math games. He encourages you to ask questions and coming to office hours.
No midterm but test on every chapter.Final.Lectures available online.Helpful and extra credit if he is visited in his office for help. Provides at least 1 practice test.Allows 1 cheat sheet both sides.Takes attendance. If you come to class, do homework (MathXL), do the practice test, you will pass the class.Personable and approachable teacher.
He is a good teacher...just disorganized. Offers a lot of extra credit.Test are somewhat hard.He is there to answer any questions, but seems like he puts the tests together right before class. i didnt do so well in the class but would still highly recommend him
Mr. Traugott was super cool when I had him for this course(Intro to Game Program Concepts)! He really gets involved with work when he can't solve it on the spot. Really awesome and laid back guy! Easy to get over 100% too! A+ teacher!
I could understand why I have such a crappy grade in his class right now. I don't particularly agree with all the negative comments about him that give him all 1's. He's not as bad as they say he is, you just need to be motivated enough to go to his classes since he doesn't take attendance.
You may be tempted to, but dont zone out during class. While it is kind of difficult to pay attention, he does mention things that arent in the textbooks that will be on tests. Tests start off easy, but get harder as the semester continues. Very helpful teacher.
His lectures are disorganized and made up on the spot. Knowing C++ before taking this class will save your life. You can always ask him questions during his office hours and he's fine with helping students and does a superb job of it. The class really isn't that hard if you already know C++ and it's more of a review.
First thing: This class is HARD! Your're going to have to put hours into this class. The homework are questions he specifically chooses. You have to really think about them. You will NED a study buddy in this class. Quizzes and homeworks are somethings online but they're usually harder than in class. You can get an A, but it'll be hard
it's the hardest class in Chabot but the teacher is willing to help every time you go to his office. you can got an 'A' if you show him you work hard for the class by go to his office ask. he is kind and helpful. DON"T BE AFRIAD TO ASK!! well the final is hard but he did curve and give enough extra credit. if you don't study u it is hard to get 'A'
it is a fun class and you will learn a lot about programming in java and a sense of graphic design. it is a easy class. there are many extra credit so you will get out with 'A'. the exam are easy if you study the practice exam. he allow the class to have one to two sheet(s) of note. TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT GOOD GRADE 'A'!!!
Lectures are disorganized and made up on the spot. If this is your first programming class, you must either review C++ and basic concepts or take CSI7 first. Quizzes and tests are very difficult and he did little to prepare us for it. Be prepared to do LOTS of independent study if you want an A.
Due dates are very relaxed(usually at least a few days extra), attendance is not checked. If you ever need help, just ask him and he will explain, lectures are helpful sometimes, but mostly just for assignment helpdates. Most info can be found online or emailed to him. Using the book or internet is crucial. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT, GAVE ME 10% FREE
His online class was easy and simple, but there is a TON of work that take forever to finish. When I take his tests, I open a tab and search for the answer. The answers are all over the internet. If you do your work, and cheat the tests like me, you will get the A
Lenient grader. Traugott is hands down the most "chill" CS professor at Chabot. This was my second time taking this course (withdrew the first time) so the topics were much easier to pick up this time around. He gives out quite a bit of extra credit along the way and the midterm/final weren't difficult, if you pay attention in class you're fine.
Very kind-hearted professor that genuinely cares about his students. If you have any inquiries via e-mail, he responds promptly. He is extremely helpful as long as you are willing to learn.
There is a 2 letter grade curve in this class. If that doesn't indicate a problem, I don't know what does. This teacher gets frustrated when students can't decode his haphazard way of winging the lectures. If you show him that you want to learn, he will almost certainly pass you though. The tests are so difficult that many honors students fail.
Very nice teacher and easy to talk to. Offers a lot of help if needed. The class was pretty easy overall, but the assignments he assigned near the end of the class was tough. I would not recommend taking this class unless if you have completed CS15 or CS20, as he introduces topics from those classes. Very fair grader as well, let's you turn in late
Really cool guy. He basically makes sure students try and learn whereas his grading is pretty flexible.
Terrible class format, cant keep on track, prioritized female students over others, never gave a straight answer, and his tests never even touch the things he's teaching or the practice questions save yourselves time and money by avoiding his class
He is a wonderful teacher.
I took Professor Traugott for CS20 and CS19A and both classes were enjoyable. He live-codes during lecture so you can see how to actually implement various fundamental ideas in CS. The assignments he gives afterwards are relevant and fun and you use the concepts you learned in class. If you do the assignments properly, you will get an A.
I took csci 8 with Jonathan. It was an online class but he helped me through the technical difficulties I had. I fundir-me his class early and I got an A so I would highly recommend him if you are good at Microsoft office and can finish the assignments early. If you are technically handicapped, take his fall class. Summer is for the proficient.
Good professor, you can get by without reading the book. If he sees that his students are struggling he will slow down and offer a good amount of extra credit. Would recommend taking.
Great professor! Genuine about helping students learn. He had notes on Blackboard to refer to and is fair with grading. Discrete math was a difficult topic to grasp, but the professor's explanations made it better
Cool and understanding professor. He has office hours outside of class and sometimes wears a cool hat. Tests and quizzes aren't too hard if you make an effort to understand the material. Recommend this professor
Terrible professor do not take him. He is not the hardest but impossible to get an A on how disorganized he is. WOULD GIVE A BIG FAT ZERO IF POSSIBLE. I regret ever taking this class with him should not have.
One time I missed a lecture and a quiz because of work; he let me take it right when I told him! Grades quizzes with detailed explanation and will let you make mistakes so, you better TRY! HARD! His lectures go into explaining all that will be on the homework and in the textbook chapters with example code and explanations. Pretty cool. Respect him.
STAY AWAY. VERY unorganized, last minute class cancellations. You go to class, the door is locked and everyone is cursing while leaving the aisle. Then, we check our e-mails, he sent a canvas e-mail to everyone 8 minutes ago "open lab only, no class". This happened 4 times. On the last one, turns out he came and did 30 pts quiz for half the class.
He is very chill, I recommend him if you working and studying at the same time. he post the hw for the whole month and you can do it at your own pace, he never cancel class but he makes it optional as open lab, so if you have questions he is there to help you. And the material of the class is quite useful.
Be ready to shell out some extra cash todo homework. Lectures are useless, if lecture wasn't cancelled that day, so just read the book. Like to Chegg your way through life? Then this is the class for you. Its not difficult because the subject is hard its because professor is so vague. Also be ready for pop assignments and labs and a deleted canvas.
Lectures were extremely uninformative, did not seem to care about the class at all, don't even bother emailing him he wont respond, homework and tests were 50 times harder than lecture, and there were SEVERAL last minute class cancellations. Don't bother asking him questions, he is extremely condescending and impatient. Super lazy on grading too.
Probably the worst professor I have ever come across. Did not show up to the zoom lecture for half the classes, only warning the students 30 minutes or an hour before (if we're lucky). Does not grade assignments until the day grades are due at the end of the semester, so you never know what you actually have. I would advise everyone to stay away.
Several last minute class cancels (esp before test days and project due dates), poor at explaining the material, gives us heavy projects and doesn't explain it until one lecture before its due. Doesn't follow his own syllabus. Would've been even more difficult if you don't have prior knowledge of CS. Gave out a decent amount of extra credit.
Covers material poorly in lectures, making them -- in many respects -- useless. You are better off just tuning out during the lectures and reading the book instead. The homework is often so much harder than examples covered in class (and, sometimes, in the book), necessitating secondary or tertiary sources for help (Prof is hard to reach). Avoid!
Professor Traugot is a good professor, he gives the effort to try to help students during class time. We don't get many lectures but rather most classes are just him assigning labs or giving out quizzes. Overall if you just spend your own time studying, you'll be fine. But it's definitely not going to be easy if you're just trying to pass the class
I did all the homework and readings, and I felt unprepared for the quizzes and midterms. He canceled classes; lectures weren't helping the students. You need to have an extreme amount of coding experience before taking his classes. Overall not good.
This class is great if you want to hate CS afterwards. There are quizzes almost every week. He barely gives us lectures and almost never shows up to class .The labs and quizzes are very tough. Avoid him at all costs. If this class is your ONLY chose, be prepared to never have A, and to spend hours on in teaching yourself how to do the material.
After reading all the reviews, I was pretty hesitant at first about taking this class. But I went from knowing little to no C++ to be pretty good at it. A lot of the negative reviews here are from students who are used to cheating their way through or just taking easy classes. Professor Traugott is very happy to help those who want to learn.
So many last minute cancellations, 1 month we only went into class 1-2x & this made us expect to have no class/zoom lecture for rest of the semester. Quizzes almost every week along with a class cancelation, so you would basically have to learn on your own. Practice problems are similar to quizzes, but solutions posted very late (10pm before quiz)
Professor is very friendly and helpful. I always received help when asked and felt very comfortable in class. He explains things very well in a sense that you can easily understand the materials. His lectures were awesome. I've learned a lot from him.
Get ready to do some hard work if you are taking his class. I spent hours on his assignments. I believe he will prepare you well for the higher level courses. He's not a tough grader but you need to do well on the tests to get an A. His lectures are good and the tests are easy if you know the materials.
I think Professor Traugott is awesome! I enjoyed his class. He's very good at explaining the materials. His homework assignments really helped me understand. If you want to learn something and care about learning, I recommend taking him!
He's helpful, acknowledgeable and smart. I had wonderful experience with Professor Traugott. The subject in CS 20 is very hard but he made it easy for you. Follow his lectures closely and spend some time figuring things out on your own then go to his office hours to talk to him, you will do great in his class!
I am taking Professor Traugott's class this summer. He's a wonderful professor. This class is self-paced. It gives me a lot of space to learn the materials on my own schedule. He's very supportive. He gives students extra support with my assignments during his office hours and you can private message him for help on discord.
Professor Traugott is most lenient professor. He's very friendly, really cares about his students learning and it shows. I enjoy his class. A fair mount of assignments but it all helps you learn the material. The materials is very straightforward and well-organized! Will take his class again!
Oh I love how this class gives you a lot of flexibility. If you have already taken CS 14, you won't have any problem with CS 19A. The assignments are on CodeLab. You get unlimited trials for each question. There are quizzes, but it's based on the materials. Overall, this class is very organized and easy. Highly recommended!
Great lectures! The best professor I've ever taken at Chabot. You will learn a lot from him!
Traugott is a very chill professor. His class is fairly easy. He posts lecture recordings and notes. I think it's useful for us to go back to review. He gives practice exams so you know what you need to study for the tests. He's very responsive and replies all my emails and messages. Overall, I think he's pretty good!
This class had a lot of interesting assignments. It was helpful for me to learn the materials. Professor always stays after class to help us. He's the best! He canceled class a few time because his wife was sick. Other than that, he was always on time for class.
Professor Traugott is accessible outside of class and does a good job at communicating.
Highly recommended! Awesome lectures, super helpful during office hours!
Good practice in computer knowledge.
The class is well-paced. He illustrates the content that you will need to learn during the labs. The course is structure in a way where problem-solving is the key to succeeding. Don't be shy to ask, he is more than willing to help if you politely ask for directions or tips to solving a certain task at hand. Note: Quiz will be written so practice.
Awesome professor! Had lots of help from Professor T.
Extremely helpful with lectures and gives plenty of time for homework and quizzes.
Professor is a really good teacher. I would definitely take him again! He cares about his students' learning. I've learned so much from him. He helped me whenever I needed. He is a fair grader. You will get a 0 is you cheat. He catches people who cheats and copies code. People left negative reviews for him because they got caught.
It's very hard to navigate on Canvas. You basically have to teach yourself completely, since it's hard to reach out to the professor for help.
you had to teach yourself everything, we only did the labs in the class which are not enough to pass the quiz or exam, he never gave notes of the reading or anything, basically tells you to read the book, watch a basic video of him explain a problem and thats it,however he is very picky in the quiz when he never provide advice or tips in class
please be on time for office hours. respect our time, we all have our own lives. if you are going to take this professor, just don't hope office hours are going to be much help
In this class, you will have to heavily rely on the textbook to teach you since most of the class time will be spent on doing quizzes and labs, which expect you to know the information needed. He does give a lot of time for you to read and understand the information but doesn't teach it himself. I would recommend this class if you can self-learn
Ahh what a bad instructor, it sucks that Chabot only has a few professors for computer science, he really knows about C++, however, he is not good at teaching, if you could take these classes in another place, I would recommend it or be ready to learn everything from youtube videos and just asking a few questions
Traugott focused on theory but didn't provide enough examples for OOP or data structures. Labs took 95% of class time but were only worth 5% of your grade. He assigned HW that required full code implementation in 2-4 days. The final exam had a question that most people couldn't do only because it was briefly mentioned once. Very disorganized class.
Terrible professor. He's just not that great at teaching and he would sort of expect us to know everything. He's also a bit rude and seems like he's always grumpy. Wish there were other CS professors at Chabot.
Learning is mostly done by reading the textbook. Classes mostly consisted of labs. One good thing is that he presents some theories in visual form, so it's easy to understand. He's also helpful if you ask questions. I do wish that we did more stuff since the workload is pretty low.
Highly recommend you DONT take this class in the summer at all. He gives way too much work. Though its an asynchronous class, he makes 2 MANDATORY OFFICE HOUR VISITS. He doesn't help either, you ask a question, hell say What do you think you should do? 3 labs,2 quizzes, and 40 questions of work PER WEEK. DON'T TAKE He also doesn't respond to emails.
If you are here to learn how to code, this is the wrong class. I signed up for this class with some basic knowledge of coding and am just taking it for the credit to skip it at another school. Extremely confusing instruction; he tells you what to do, not how to do it. If you can take it elsewhere, do it. Dont waste your time and effort with him
Meet up with once a week just to do a lab, good for self learning, homework once a week and mid term and final exam
He don't help you to understand the assignment he just saying do it, and also he will not upload anything on modules, what topics we will cover for the next day. I don't judge him but I will really appreciate if he make changes in his curriculum.
Traugott was a pretty good teacher. He's very experienced in computer science and explains things pretty well, but most of this class is self-taught, his lectures are around 40 mins to an hour and 30 mins sometimes (online on Canvas) and he doesn't announce quizzes a week before or anything he literally told us at 12 am the night before once.
He's smart but class was quite boring, and I didn't feel like I learned much. Most of the time you show up to class, he shows a new concept, then you do a lab/quiz on it. I just really wished that he taught more and that there was more structure to class. One day you could be drawing a picture and the next you could be implementing a whole program.
Professor Traugott's class requires self-learning, but the textbook and Unstuck ai tools can really help. Attend labs and stay engaged - you'll learn a lot. Overall, a rewarding experience if you're willing to put in the work.
Traugott isn't the perfect professor. No one is! But I respect him. He's a good professor. I just wanted to say something fair. If you aren't happy with the class or grade and leave 20 bad reviews on the Professor, you should go talk to him directly, instead of writing unhelpful reviews repeatedly. I believe anyone will make the effort to change.
There were times i forgot i was in the class until the day before lecture. He's cool but I would of liked a bit more teaching. Man i hate to say this but more homework would of been nice. Half the time i didn't know what I was doing because we didn't get enough practice. He's the type to give the basic example and a complex problem to apply to.
Took the course online over the summer. Very easy if you already have very limited experience with programming. Only thing I didn't like was announcing the final a day before - might have just been that its a course adapted for summer.
He is very accessible outside class time. I mean he has 4 office hours a week, in person and/or online. Sometimes, he can't make it to all of them, but hey, life happens. Sometimes, he's late because life happens. His lectures are great though, I thoroughly enjoy the way he teaches. Simple and to the point. There's lots of labs and lots of quizzes.
