Though deeply impressed with himself, is otherwise a top notch prof
Funny, informative prof. Keeps your attention on this rather dry material.
seems like a good father, handsome, tall, intelligent
once he brings his kids in, he's reeled the students in
A good prof, but too into himself. Not so great to speak with one on one.
A great guy and very smart, but can be a strange marker.
Into his stuff, if not always so clear. Pretentious, but he still listens. And he's a cool guy so his class is enjoyable.
An excellent prof. Great public speaker, is able to keep the class interested. Good use of Power Point to present material. Question box is a fabulous idea.
He is the man plain and simple, anyone that says he is pretentious just wants a reason to blame someone for why they don't understand their marks. He is an excellent Professor, one that I wish taught every class
Insensitive and made me feel like a tool.
An interesting class. My only complaint is that he seems to mark harder than most other prof's!
Too many metaphors - this isn't English. Also, what's up with his marking??
Held my attention even though the subject matter could be quite dry at times.
J-RO for life
weird -- no, *random* marking. no correlation between marks and effort.
Rose loves the sound of his own voice. I got a good mark, but I felt like I won a lottery more than anything, very arbitrary marking. Made dull but simple material dull and unclear.
Just a great guy with an amazing political media knowledge set. Some did not appreciate how great the J Rose was, but my best prof of the year
Good personality, but material is very dull and dry.
Quote from TV ... "Kim Campbell was pilliared" ... loved John
Makes things interesting, but the textbook is really boring. Tells the funniest stories about his sons. Awesome Prof!
Great speaker, very charismatic, amazing orator. Makes dull material interesting & has an amazing wealth of knowledge. Very approachable and nice. Genuine nice guy who wants to help you learn.
Rose is a great professor and should have a much higher rating. The course material being boring is not his fault people!!! Rate the prof, not the course!
A very interesting and funny guy, very fair marker
Prof. Rose is a fantastic teacher--one of the most charismatic speakers I've ever heard.
rose seems like a really cool guy, and is extremely smart. but the class is incredibly dull, and he talks as though people already have a background in politics. for an intro class, too much prior knowledge is expected. the class is a 1 hour nap.
Charismatic speaker with enjoyable lectures. Very focused on minor details that aren't always relevant. Tells a lot of stories about his kids. Marking is tough because its arbitrary.
A fine prof, man, and a credit to Queen's Political Studies
Please stick to the textbook.
Rose is great for first year students. Lectures are amazing and the marking of the papers was indeed fair. Took this course in 2002-03 but had to tip my hat to this prof.
Great prof, made the class interesting; finals were fair (read: easy), just as long as you attended class. Wants his students to do well, and his 60/40 arrangement saved my ass! Go talk to this guy after class!
Great guy, witty speaker and always willing to help. Downside, POLS110 sucked. Upside, I'm sure his media class is good.
The best lecturer I've had in university. Don't expect him to stick to the text, but that's what makes it interesting. If you suck it up and do the readings it will be the best class you take.
Very dashing.
He is an excellent prof. I actually look forward to his classes and love his little anecdotes. Hes an incredibly charasmatic and likeable guy.

Rose is the best lecturer I've had at Queens. Very charasmatic, makes the material interesting and fun- plus he's a genious! Definitely my favourite class and favourite professor!
He included personal stories, which made the class really fun and made him seem more approachable. However, he isn't the same one-on-one - he isn't as nice as he seems.
Pols was not my best course in 1st year, but being able to listen to Rose lecture made it all worthwhile. His lectures seem more like smooth presentations, but the material is so clear! If you get a chance, take a Rose course just to have the opportunity to learn with one of the best profs at Queens
Amazing lecturer. He's funny, witty, intelligent and his though he sometimes goes off topic - it makes the lecture interesting and enjoyable. My best professor yet.
Rose is witty and interesting. Im sure he'd be a really cool guy to sit down and chat politics with. However, his lectures seem to completly lack any coherence direction or flow. He constantly tries and fails at Platonic teaching and only results in getting off topic. He gives no guidelines for exam
Rose is a smooth speaker and a sharp dresser. An all around cool guy who goes out of his way to help students. The course, however, was painfully dull.
This course was really enjoyable, thanks to Prof Rose. He made it interesting, and it was great how we always talked about current events. Only complaint is that his marking seemed rather random at times.
A tough marker. Not overly helpful to students outside of the classroom, and arranges class to suit his own personal schedule. Also has serious favourites and makes them obvious.
Waited for 3 yrs to have J Ro in media class. Was worth the wait. Passionate teacher, smart and all round cool guy.
Rose comes off in lecture as a nice guy, but his lectures are terrible, I learned nothing. It feels like I paid $900 to sit in Dunning Auditorium.
John's infectious enthusiasm and genuine interest in political studies contribute to a positive learning environment.
Wow...there is nothing cool at all about Rose. He is a horrible marker, a self absorbed wanna-be scholar and terribly vane. I would not recommend him to anyone, ever. And I am a fool for even wanting to take the class.
Definitely was excited about getting into his mass media class, now regretting it. Insane marker and is clear on who he likes and doesn't (usually depending on if he is smiling while you speak). Not helpful outside of class (just nods at everything while you talk) and thinks he's King of Queen's. Avoid him at all costs, or at least dont kiss ass.
Doesn't really care about undergrads. Make sure you don't ever need any favours from him.

Very funny. Verry interesting and his power point notes made notetaking easy. His 110 bulletin board on the web made it easy to access him as well as other class mates.
Really great professor. Loved his teaching style and thought he was fantastically helpful with problems. Really cute kids too (who he's crazy about) and he was generally just a great guy, especially with 3rd and 4th year students - chill enough that you didn't feel uncomfortable bumping into him on the street, but still authoritative.
Great class, material is easy to understand and very important. Great structure to the year. Will try to get into his 400 level class.
Fun and interesting, but very little will be learned.
so amazing!
Nearly cried when he announced the last lecture of this semester! A great prof who is fun, interesting and sensitive to the needs of students. Cute kid, too!
Dr. Rose is a great lecturer, passionate, entertaining, and very approachable. He taught the course using lots of metaphors, and if you understood them, it made the material very interesting and easy to learn. He put videos of the lectures online which was perfect for studying for the exam.
BEST PROF I HAVE HAD! Very entertaining presenter. Used real-life stories as examples, had plenty of jokes to keep the class casual but informative. He enlightened me on many great subjects. Very approchable. Great assignments that made the course work fun. A++
I don't understand the love for this guy. His lectures were hilarious but I learned ABSOLUTELY nothing. Tough marker too. His exam had almost nothing to do with his lectures.
Best prof I had first year. Extreemly clear, helpful and fair. I will be looking out for future classes of his to take - that good.
Hilarious guy and so smart. If you aren't sure about politics, you will love it after this class!
Great speaker
Hilarious Lectures!
Hilarious, charismatic lectures but hard time combining the reading with the lectures to understand concepts. I had a hard time learning even though I wanted too. I'll look for classes of his to take in the future because he is a great teacher, I just found the curriculum not what I expected - wanted to learn something a little different.
I'll be the sourpuss who goes ahead and says it--this guy is an overrated prof who garners popularity for his very hollow bravado. Yes. He is funny, and his lectures are engaging. But his jokes are often at the expense of ideologies he doesn't agree with. The material we learn is too concept oriented and vague. Wasted term, really.
Strong orator, with classes I enjoyed attending. That said, what we learned in lecture was vague and not particularly relevant.
Really good at keeping the student's interest, and his exam was a lot like the one posted on exam bank. Good prof overall.
Professor Rose was easily my favourite professor in first year. He teaches what one might find a bland and boring topic, and somehow manages to keep the class interested and captivated. His exam was very straightforward and exactly what he outlined previously in class.
very entertaining and engaging lectures, made politics my favourite course of the year, had some friends who really didn't like him though (typically those with strong opposing ideologies)
Favourite prof from first year, hands down.
This Prof is a champion...
Best prof hands down, is extremely entertaining yet still manages to teach the material. Has the ability to make up lectures on the stop in response to world or school events. Thanks a lot Prof. Rose
Such a good prof and overall interesting guy! Favourite prof in first year.
A lot of students enjoy Rose because of his eloquence and knowledge of our generation's interests. However, beneath his confident façade is a teaching style that is mildly convoluted; he often strays from the topic with excessive allusions to current events. While the focus on 'today' is appreciated, Rose sacrifices clarity for showiness and pomp.
Professor Rose is an intelligent and eloquent speaker. He makes a very difficult course easier to grasp, connect to and makes extensions with. He does expect a fair amount from his 1st year students, but that's necessary! It's University. He is also very helpful. I spoke to him in person, and he was very eager to help and guide me. I recommend him!
best prof at queens, very engaging, helpful one-on-one, handsome and intelligent. doesn't hold back on constructive criticism.
The man is a boss.
Made me want to major in Pols. Great way of presenting material making it easy to get a good grade if you pay attention/go to class. Overall great guy.
Great class! Had so much fun! Very engaging lectures!
Meh, I'm just not as in love with as most students are. He's an ok guy, but honestly his lectures are heavy on charisma and showmanship, but contain very litle meaningful, challenging content. I learned very little from his lectures.
my favourite prof by far
The textbook is useful. JRose is a good guy, but he's not the best professor. He doesn't cover enough content in class, and spends too much time asking students for their opinions or going off on tangents instead of covering the necessary material. Things meant to make the class interactive (peer reviews, clickers) also make it worse.
One of my favorite Profs at Queens... You can really tell how much he cares about his students which helped me engage in his lectures. His good looks also helped me focus. However, I hated the textbook, as it made simple concepts complicated. Overall, good course though.
Absolute best prof/teacher/mentor/person I've ever had in my life. Not only is he easy on the eyes, he is hilarious and makes the class so interesting!
Jonathan Rose is the perfect politics prof! He makes material that can be very dry/hard to understand interesting and clear! Lectures are really engaging! Made me decide to major in politics. Exams and assignments are very fair and he is always open to questions/conversation! Follow him on twitter!
Sick prof! His lectures are really engaging, and although the readings are painful to get through, his classes are well worth it. Teaches you how to think on top of what to think, which is really important.
Really interesting!
Best prof ever! Actually made me want to never skip a class.
While Rose was extremely enthusiastic and entertaining to listen to, his lectures lacked clarity. He often took heavy and incredibly ambiguous political concepts such as power and started ranting about them for weeks without references to KEY scholars in the field or realistic examples. He's friendly, but also highly presumptuous and judgmental.
Such a great prof, really cares about students and getting them excited about the subject matter. You'll never want to miss a lecture.
Rose is hands down the best all-around professor I've had at Queen's. He's very knowledgable and is clearly passionate about his field, teaching, and helping students. His lectures are both interesting and fun, and he is the only prof I've had so far that used in-lecture discussion as a way to help everyone learn.
J Rose genuinely cares about his students. POLS110 set the foundations for me to understand more complicated concepts and think critically about them throughout my undergrad. Lectures were always enjoyable and J Rose is totally up on technology - check him out on twitter!
All style, no substance. Doesn't get to the core of the relevant political concepts and instead deflects and goes off in a bunch of different directions. The flashy approach is ultimately a shallow one.
Incredibly over-rated
He is kind of overrated. Overall a really nice guy in class but he only really teaches at face value, not really delving deeper into topics. Most of what he discussed in this course I already knew thanks to Goodyear-Grant's second year Gender and Politics class. The class was easy at least.
All around great prof and makes his lectures and classes interesting. Would definitely recommend
J Rose is a great guy and a great lecturer! You can tell he's really passionate about what he's talking about as he offers a lot of substance. I took his Trump class 2 years ago and he always made sure to keep up to date with new info coming in from the Trump administration. We would go into what was happening as it was happening and it made it fun
J Rose was a great prof. He is clearly very passionate about what he teaches and cares about his students. Really knows his stuff and unlike other poli sci profs he is up to date on more modern political events like youth protests and environmental politics. Overall a solid prof that I would take again.
Jonathan Rose reinvigorated my love for politics. Though it may not have been intentional, he is one of the most inspiring professors I have been taught by. It is clear he loves what he is teaching, and his interactive teaching style kept me attentive in every class. While lectures are by no means mandatory, I'd highly recommend attending.
Going into this class, I expected a lot from Rose and he disappointed. His lectures were incredibly disorganized and half the time I didnt know what was important and what wasnt. His lecture style is not for everybody, and if you miss a lecture you end up missing a ton of information that is left off his slides.
Really good teacher. Super interesting lectures, although sometimes he rambled on for a bit and made them longer than they had to be. The papers in this course were actually quite difficult, but I found that if you worked hard, then you would probably receive a good grade. Quite a few readings, but they're not absolutely necessary to do.
Best prof of my first year, by far
Lectures were well organized and I felt like I learned a lot. One chapter of reading was assigned almost every week and it always related to his lectures. I definitely want to take one of his classes in the future. Papers were not graded too hard.
Very down to earth, always open to questions
Prof Rose is a cool guy, but he assigns a lot of reading for a first year class. Assignments are definitely more than fair.
Overall, Professor Rose is great!!! He gives assignments that are very interesting, and you can tell that he cares about his students. Do not get overwhelmed by the amount of readings, you do not need to read them all or understand them fully to get a good mark.
Made us watch his old recorded lectures instead of doing lectures in person as scheduled. Used the one class a week he left for assorted ramblings that had as much depth as a lap pool. TA's marked harshly and he wouldn't be much help with assignments 'as not to limit our learning'. Impression that he couldn't care less about a first year course.
WE LOVE JONATHON ROSE!!!
Professor Rose is by far the best prof I've ever had at Queens. He's hilarious and so kind and can tell he's very educated and passionate. I took his course in Fall2020 and absolutely loved it. Only downside is you're graded on very few things and the course is quite content-heavy. Have to read quite a bit but isn't bad compared to other courses.
He really knows what he's talking about.
He manages to make every class fun and engaging! Definitely enjoy his lectures
J. Rose is a theatrical prof, he puts on great lectures that somehow captivate yet contain no info. If you put in the work you could get a B+, due to the bell curve down that exists (TAs even admitted this in tutorial). You have to do the readings to do well on essays. Overall boring but good essay topics if you like research.
He's entertaining that's for sure. Runs around with a mic which is prolly his only form of exercise considered how hard he's breathing into it at the end of the lecture lol I believe this course made me a better writer, reader, and critical thinker. Despite it being a GPA deflator, I would 100% take it again.
Love him. Literally no complaints. One of, if not the best prof I have ever had
Rose is engaging, inside and outside the classroom. He cares about his students and demonstrates this through steady-paced teaching, being available for any questions/assistance, and a positive attitude. He is approachable, knowledgeable, and interested in broadening his own scope of information surrounding what we focus on in the POLS department.
J Rose made every lecture engaging for the class and gives great lectures, almost as great as his suits. Bros spiffy 24/7.
Absolute 10/10 professor. Fantastic and engaging lectures, all info is presented in a way that is comprehensible and clear. Encourages participation but doesn't force it. No complaints whatsoever.
J. Rose was amazing. Very engaging and funny, especially when he ran around the lecture hall with the mic. He made me want to major in POLS.
J. Rose is a Queens politics Icon!
I know everyone loves Rose & I believe it's because he's super charismatic - but he's not a great professor. His slides have almost nothing, and when he is lecturing, he goes on tangents - making taking notes/ knowing what you are supposed to learn, quite difficult (It might work for some). Assignments were also not handed back on time :/
Professor Rose is an incredible professor, probably the best I've had the first semester. His lectures can be a little confusing as he jumps back and forth from topic to topic. He always made the lectures engaging and fun to attend. Just make sure that you keep up with the textbook readings, and you'll do fine.
He's award-winning for a reason: an engaging, fluid and funny speaker. He simplifies things in a way that never feels condescending. Overall, it feels like he's everything that a prof should be, but it's a shame he doesn't teach the course for the full year. Also be warned: the TAs use VERY blatant bell-curving, like egregious. Pray for a good one.
Best prof at Queen's!! Hands down this guy is amazing. You gotta take his courses whenever you can. So so engaging
Great lecturer, but the slides that were created were terrible. They are just pictures which he talks over, leaving you with nothing but the notes you've scrambled during lectures throughout the year. Then, with those notes, expected stellar, imaginative, and theme connecting responses on the online exam. Expected a lot, but barely gave anything.
The class is super easy only has one essay outline, one essay and the final which is a take home exam. Jonathan brought the spirit up in lectures, he is amazing when explaining things. If you get a bad TA then that's bad, it's all based on luck if one gives all her students 60s and there's another that gives all her students 90s.
Best Prof. of my life.
Was amazing, by far such a good prof at Queens.
The best prof I have had! You never wanted to miss a lecture.
Professor Rose is a charismatic lecturer who makes politics engaging. His teaching style can be unstructured, but the content is valuable. Combining the textbook, class notes, and tools like Unstuck AI helped me succeed in this course.
TAKE FIRST YEAR POLITICS!!! Professor Rose is definitely one of the harder professors at the university but he is so passionate and educated on the topics of politics that there is no reason you should fall behind. He is also funny lol
Professor Rose's class is a total waste of time. He was consistently weeks behind the course plan, and the majority of the course is taught by and graded by the TAs. There is nearly no benefit to the student in attending Professor Rose's lectures, as most of them are incoherent rants about irrelevant topics that won't be tested. Do not take.
Professor Rose was made for courses like this. Extremely knowledgeable about politics and his lectures promoted debate, intrigue, and even laughter at times. Though his lectures were great, I felt as though they were unstructured and unrelated to course material, especially as his TAs that marked essays always seemed to be on different pages.
Very friendly prof, he is super easy to reach and responds to emails quickly. Tough grader but is very helpful if you reach out to him.
Love J. Rose! One of the best profs at Queens.
I didn't love his class - he often went on tangents that were unrelated to the content and I found his lectures a bit difficult to follow overall. He's extremely charismatic and passionate about what he does, but he also seemed a bit pretentious at times. Lots of readings (almost too much), and I felt the grading criteria a bit harsh.
Best course of first year.
Rose is a top prof at Queen's, very well liked and respected. His lectures are all over the place and nearly impossible to take notes on especially because his slides have a couple words each and he tends to be weeks behind in content but his lectures were always entertaining nonetheless. Very tough grading seems to depend on TA but great prof.
Professor Rose is clearly passionate about his job and his students. He gives amazing lectures, engaging students in the audience, and using more visual slides and language, not "reading off of a slide". I did, however, find that tutorials did not generate much mental stimulation, likely due to both the prompts themselves and the group you're in.
Really engaging lectures and a pretty easy course. You can tell he really cares about what he's teaching as well as the students. Tutorials depended on your TA and how much they engaged with the material. Would reccomend!
I LOVE this prof. He was hilarious and so lighthearted. Told a ton of fun stories to get his points about Poli Sci across. Super nice to talk to on campus as well and has engaging lectures with easy content. 10/10 would recommend.
My fav pols prof at queens; love his lectures and him as a person
I don't get the hype, terrible prof, always over complicates topics, and his TA's grade harshly. If you care about your GPA avoid like the plague.
Great course, as long as you attend lectures!! He will encourage participation which I found it pushed me out of my comfort zone to really understand the course. Definitely one of the hardest courses I have taken so far in terms of application and connecting concepts. However, if you plan to attend law school, this is great prep for the LSAT.
The prof is very charismatic, and made the course material more interesting. However, the way this course was taught, I felt like there was no structure to the foundations of what he wanted us to learn, as there was simply so much info. no study guide for the exam. not my first choice, but take if u work hard. I learned a lot, very interesting.
Overall, this course placed an exceptionally heavy and, at times, excessive workload on students. The pressure for the exam was almost unbearable. Despite my success in the course, the final exam was extremely difficult, as there was little guidance from the instructor on exam preparation, which would have greatly improved the learning experience.
