This professor was amazing. He curved test grades and would also sometimes create study guides for the tests. He really made sure that you did well in the class!
This professor was amazing. He was very enthusiastic. He also curved test grades. He did his best to make sure that everyone could do their best in the class.
A very nice guy overall...class is tough but he did alright getting through the material needed to be covered...does not tell you exactly what will be on the exams but you do need to study a lot to earn a good grade...go to SI sections they are very helpful
Very nice teacher. Boring class. He doesn't write his own test therefore they are very difficult, but he curves them.
This professor was a very nice person, but his tests are very challenging. He is fair though when it comes to curving test grades. I would look for another professor, tests are too hard no matter how much you study.
Best science professor I've ever had! Very nice guy, interesting to listen to, and provides study guides for exams. Exams are fair and he doesn't try to trick you, but you have to be prepared to study a lot! He curves the class at the end of the semester.
Yates is a pretty typical professor: lacks any form of originality, delivers monotonous lectures and guarantees challenging exams; however, he curves fairly and he's approachable.
Great teacher, very concerned about student success, pretty interesting, all notes on computer and available so don't have to take many in class notes, 'clicker quiz' every class worth 3 points a piece...good way to add to your grade, easy to talk to. Wish I could have him next class!
Ah , HEgoes at a very fast pace sometimes and I just cant get it.
Test are extremely hard!!!! Even if you study for them you'll be surprised on the score! SI doesn't help, its better to study by yourself!!! After first test go talk to him to help improve your grade because test are EXTREMELY hard!!!!
This class was very difficult for me!!! I suggest if you don't have to take it for your major don't take it at all. Overall he is nice, lectures are pretty boring though. Oh! and exams were tough.. good part is he curves everything at the end.
This professor was extremely hard. He crams too much information in the exams.
TOugh TEACHER! only uses powerpoint. uses a Mcgraw connectweb which sucks (10Q no retakes), use iclicker, takes FOREVER to grade exams though it's a scantron, never used the book. never finishes all the chapters needed for one exam but will make the topic fit the next exam. Very confusing at times. But is great HELP if you talk to him, looks creepy
Dr. Yates is a very professional, scholarly, and fair professor. His tests are challenging, but his approach to teaching is very accommodating. His Biology 111 course is not easy, but success is definitely achievable.
Yates is funny, but his class is tough. He posts his power points on Moodle before class, and goes over them in class. It is possible to study on your own without attending class, however, I wouldn't suggest it. The tests are difficult, but he curves your final grade fairly.
I really enjoyed this class! i got a 4.0 and i studied everything directly off the power points since that's what the whole exam is based off of. Yates is funny enough to keep you awake at 8 am :)...a lot of studying (of course, its anatomy and physio so theres A LOT of material) but yates is a good professor. I recommend !
This class isn't too bad, read 2 books, one essay exam, one final research paper, two small papers and a powerpoint presentation. I would take more classes with him if I could. Yates is hilarious, I HIGHLY recommend!!!!
Lectures are dry and pretty much same as powerpoint notes, but exams are straightforward and his curve is very generous. Overall great professor and class experience.
Great teacher. The papers you write are super easy because they are mostly your opinion. All you do is read 2 books write one big paper and a couple small ones. Hes a super cool professor and easy grader if you put in the effort. Take him for 495
Has good notes, exams arnt too difficult.
He is a pretty good professor. Iclickers everyday so go to class, his tests are hard but he curves everything fairly. I wish he taught 113. I would take him if you really need to learn the material for future classes...
I didnt pay as much attention in professor yates class as i should have. I didnt step up my game til the end of the semester ad ended with a b-. Look at his powerpoints and do the study guides and you will be fine for the tests. Also Iclickers are used everyday so attendance is mandatory
Decent enough. Probably been teaching for a looong time because he's a bit jaded. It's ALL lectures and slide shows. Don't waste time reading the text. He can be a bit jerkish at times, but can be very helpful if you approach him in the right way.
This professor is very passionate about science. he is helpful and if you pay attention and put the effort in the class you will do well. Nursing students definitely take this guy!! study ppts and you will be successful.
Seriously, I have some serious appreciation for anyone who get a 4.0 in this class, or even a 3.8. His tests are ridiculously hard & half of the questions on them aren't even covered in the lecture or in the book. Definitely wish I would've looked for a different professor while there was still time. He spends more time talking about food than Bio.
Dr. Yates had knowledge & enthusiasm for neurobiology. His self-made exams reinforced key concepts without distracting from them. He had an easy-going demeanor & engaging character. Dr. Yates was very approachable & personable. He was willing to lend assistance where needed, & he delivered on commitments in a truly professional & timely manner.
Yates is a good teacher. His tests are fair, and he enjoys talking about the material but never gets long-winded. I really loved this class. The online quizzes are kind of a butt, but he realizes that and only grades the quizzes on pass or fail. This was my favorite class ever, but I had a prior interest to the subject material.
Try not to take him unless you love bio. His tests are hard and info on them is barely covered in class. Gives daily iclicker quizzes, so you must go to class. Very bad at expalining things and talks to you like you already know the material. Also calls you out and embarrasses you in front of the class if you have to leave early. DON'T TAKE HIM!
Yates is a proper college professor. In my opinion he teaches the class the way I expected a college lecture to be taught. However, that's not really what I wanted. He moves fast and his powerpoints have everything you need, but he likes to spend extensive time explaining topics that aren't on his exams. Kinda frustrating. He's funny though.
It was a real drag coming to class because of the iClickers that are worth 12.5% of your grade. I thought he was an okay professor. Nothing really exceptional about him. He gives no study tools to help you other than his power points and videos that come through the textbook company.
No words can describe how horrible his class was. His exams are ridiculously difficult and include things that aren't covered in his lectures or the book. Apparently I need a masters degree in biology to pass an introductory class. If you value your GPA at all, don't take his class.
Professor Yates really knows his stuff. Although this class is almost impossible to understand at some points. Study everyday! Go to his office hours if you are struggling. iclicker quizzes everyday so come to class. Yates does curve the final grade which helps tremendously!
Great teacher! I loved this course it is exactly as the title says it is. A lot of class discussions, everything was really informative and Yates is awesome at making it cool. You read good books in there and write 2 big essays a few smaller ones. Def recommend
It is a tough class, but Yates made it easier to understand. You definitely get out what you put in. Go to every class!
If you are not majoring in anything science, do not take this class! I am a business major and I was just looking to fulfill my science credit and I had no warning that this class is hard! I never got a good grade on an exam, but I completed every other assignment and ended up getting a 3.0 in the class...so do all of the work!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DO NOT NEED IT. There are easier classes to take if you just need a science gen ed. Professor Yates is not a bad professor the class is just very hard. You do not use the text book at all.
This class is extremely tough but Professor Yates did a pretty OK time at teaching it. All I have to say is that he curves your final grade EXTREMELY well!!!! Thought I was for sure getting a D and ended up with a B!!!
The COURSE is hard, but Yates makes is manageable and he gets your pretty interested in the stuff he is talking about. He curves your grade ALOT which most teachers dont do, i would definitely recommend him!
Dr. Yates is a great guy and awesome teacher. The class itself is pretty easy, you pretty much show up, participate, and write a few papers. It's a very minimal work load, don't worry about it taking time away from more demanding classes. For a 495 prof, Yates is probably one of the best.
I enjoyed having Yates for this class. Lecture consists of going over power points and everything he tests from are in the power points. It won't kill you to skip a few classes, but don't make a habit of it. Yates has a nice grading scale and a good sense of humor. Labs are kind of boring, but oh well. Hard class so study!! I finished with a 3.9
This class covers a ton of information in a wide range of bio topics, and exams are DIFFICULT, but Yates is dedicated to helping his students. He is extremely knowledgeable and approachable, and eager to share anything he thinks will help you to do well. He's the best professor I've had at OU, but beware that this class is TOUGH.
dont buy the textbook- just get the access code from the publisher and save yourself $200. I didn't open the book more than once and got a 3.9 He is a good teacher, with a great sense of humor, there is a lot of information to cover so study the powerpoints and ask questions
I have taken this class so many times it's unreal. This summer was crucial and I took Yates whom I've never had before.I missed so many classes and tested terribly and my grade was curved to a 3.5!! The labs are necessary, but FOR THE LOVE OF GOD TAKE YATES SO YOU CAN BE DONE WITH THIS GOD AWFUL CLASS AND NOT RUIN YOUR GPA!!Don't buy the book, use pp
Class was very hard and teacher was entertaining but very rude and swore a lot. If your taking this for gen ed don't. And he was anti-religious and was very biased with regards to evolution. He made evolution as if it was the most important thing to him and if you question evolution he would criticize you instead of being professional.
Dr. Yates is a great professor. He is there to help you and answer questions. Yes, he gives his opinions but that's what a college class is all about! Still a hard class but if you put in the time, you can def get a good grade..his tests are all from his ppts but you have to know everything! But he is funny and charismatic! Take him!
He cares about students and wants them to do well. BUT you have to do a ton of work outside of class. He flies through the lectures-I read each chapter a couple times to understand the material. There are a LOT of online quizzes + labs that are a large part of your grade-keep up with them. Many of the questions on the quizzes are also on the exams.
Yates is a very nice guy, but his lectures are very boring. I wouldn't waste money buying the book, I never used it. I would recommend him just for the generous curve. There is a lot to know for the tests so be prepared to study. A lot of his test questions come directly from the online post lecture quizzes so study those.
Professor Yates is a cool professor, going into the class I was nervous however, everything that's covered on his exams you DO go over. The power points are helpful, but really utilize connect because a lot of the exams had questions from the site..especially PLQs. I would also recommend reading the chapters before class at least once, really helps
Very good teacher with very good teaching methods. The class wasn't very hard becuase he simplified everything through examples. Very little outside work other than studying required. I would highly suggest him to other students.
Hard class, good professor. Don't buy book. Reread pp's, attend class for iclickr questions, many PLQ questions on exam. GO TO SI!! Do all 3 Labs ASAP so they're out of the way. Quizzes are hard but most questions are google-able. Read his exam questions CAREFULLY! Best BIO prof at OU.
I LOVED YATES. He is soooo funny and makes the class so enjoyable. His tests are 100% fair. If you study, you will do well. Only annoying thing were the iclickers everyday, but the questions were easy. Study the PLQ questions for the exam, most were on there. I would DEFINITELY recommend him, he's AWESOME.
Professor Yates is awesome! If you go to class everyday (he does do iClicker questions), read the book before lectures, and print out his Power Points and pay attention in class, then you will do really well in the class. [You should probably do this for all of your classes though]. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND YATES! He was one of my favorite profs @ OU.
Great guy, makes a hard class understandable! Exams are fair, DON'T BOTHER WITH THE BOOK! study slides, PLQ's, and take notes in class. SI is also helpful. Also has a great final curve, so don't stress!
His lectures are extremely boring. I just did the notes and online homework and barely paid attention in class. He curves a lot which helps. He is funny and can make class interesting at times. I would definitely take another class with him!
Very good professor, fair in grading, study PLQS
the course is a difficult course, but professor Yates is very helpful. If you go to his office hours he very helpful. You do need to work for your grade in the class, he is very clear about what will be on the exam (he makes study guides) and most of his exams are the same as the online quizzes so make sure to study those. He is a awesome
His due dates on the online quizzes vary, and he doesn't offer ways to make it up. He had one lab due at midnight, and the next one due at 12:59pm. He's clueless with his own required online assignments, which malfunction often. He doesn't clearly answer questions during lectures and throws curve-ball questions in his exams. DO NOT TAKE.
Very difficult course to take, lots of reading required. You must read every chapter and understand to pass the class. I never payed attention to his lectures because it was boring but read the book on my own terms, did all the easy necessary work and came to class for clickers. His curve is amazing, received a 3.8. NOT an easy course though.
Very unprofessional , I wouldn't recommend this man , all he is good for is a curve that really isn't all that if you ask me . Tough class, way to difficult than it should be . I clickers everyday and you don't even get to see your last exam . It's like your sol .. Talks about food rather than biology . Save your money & your great mind from hell .
You absolutely HAVE to read the book if you have any wish to pass this class with a good grade. Many people drop the class because they dont bother to put in the effort or go to SI and end up failing mid-semester. He does have a very generous curve but dont let that fool you! You HAVE to study. Some tests are hard, others are easier, it depends.
Extremely fair tests; VERY few integrative questions on his 60 question multiple choice exams, NEVER asks questions beyond promised material. Studying the textbook is vital; 111 class lectures integrate nothing, adding 3 exam questions outside booktest. Attendance questions daily. Highly rigorous and competitive. 94% for 4.0. Cares about students.
I was told that bio 111 was where most pre-nursing students decide to change their major so I was pretty nervous going into this course. Yates pissed me off like no other in the beginning but as far as bio profs at OU go, he's one of the best. If you don't study PLQ's and live in your book, don't expect to do well. I did better than I thought.
Take advantage of his office hours because he will help you ALOT. Go to SI if you have a good instructor for it (because I did not so it was a waste of time). He does attendance based questions at every lecture so do not miss those. Study PLQ's for test and read. This is a difficult class but everyone has potential to pass. You do have to try hard
Great professor, tests are hard. I had to study A LOT. If you study, you will do just fine. I didn't buy the book, because it came online with the access code.
Great professor !!!! make sure you study the PLQ's!!! they are always on the exams! i did mediocre on exams but there was a very generous curve!!!! ended with a 3.8, but if you actually read the book its an easy 4.0! There are iclicker questions so come to class.
Don't take yates is all I gotta say. Be ready to read ALOT. He mades the test extremely tricky.
Dr. Yates is funny and a really nice guy but this is a total self-teach class. The only grades you get are four exams, your lab grades, and the lab APR assignments. He hates teaching anatomy and physiology which definitely shows in his lectures. He skips through the powerpoint slides a lot. Be prepared to teach yourself!
Professor Yates is an awesome guy, makes biology a lot more interesting, has a lot of stories to tell during lecture. Does a great job explaining everything, is very clear on what his exams will be like. His exam questions mostly come from the PLQ that he posts and the reviews he posts with the lectures. Very funny guy, cracks you up with stories!
Don't buy textbook-buy connect access code Study powerpoints everyday and make sure you UNDERSTAND. DONT JUST MEMORIZE. Labs were good-only about 10-15 kids a class. Labs graded on completion. 4 lecture & 3 lab exams. It really wasn't bad, just don't wait last minute to study and you should be ok. TAs teach lab instead of him but they are awesome.
YOU MUST PUT IN WORK FOR THIS CLASS! Exams, online labs, online assignments (PKA), online timed quizzes (PLQ), and iClicker are the 5 things that make up your grade. Labs+online assignments are guaranteed 100% as long as you do them. You cannot get away without reading the book. The material isn't hard. The hard part is too much material. Nice guy!
One thing you must understand about BIO111--it's a filter course. You will get a lot of material in a short period of time. The tests are there to test your understanding of the material, not your rote memorization. Prof Yates breaks everything down with analogies and makes everything easier to understand. Read the book, attend class, pass.
Pretty good Professor! Pay attention to lectures, study the powerpoints and online quizzes well, and do the PKAs, quizzes, online labs, and iclicker questions to do good in this class. Lots of pretty difficult material to study, but totally doable. He's pretty funny too and has stuffed chromosomes he'll show to you at every opportunity.
Hes a great prof. He will sit down and talk with you when ever you are struggling. The material is hard. It takes a lot of studying and concept understanding to do well in this class. He is lecture and lab based. No extra work to receive credit. Keep up, go to class, and study. You'll do fine.
Professor Yates' enthusiasm about science makes coming to class all the more rewarding. It's a difficult subject and requires a substantial effort from the student, but Yates helps as much as he can. He is willing to answer questions, go over exams, or walk you through any confusion. He is very smart, funny, & a quality professor.
He is a great teacher that shows exceptional knowledge in his field and clearly explains the material. He is willing to stop and answer question as frequently as possible. Subject is a little hard but as long as you pay attention in lecture, do homework and study you will be fine.
Lectures seemed much longer than an hour. The tests are lengthy but not too hard a lot of the questions come from the PLQs. Get a study buddy who is on the same level of understanding as you and work through the power points and you will do good.
Expects A LOT from you! I spent more time studying and doing work for this class than I did in my other three classes combined! He doesn't curve anything. He average on all his exams were 65-75%. If you're a nursing student run the other way! He knows what he is talking about, but doesn't realize it's his students first time seeing the material.
tests are difficult. averages 60-70ish%. curve at end helps. nice guy.
Overall really great professor! He knows what he's talking about. His lectures are easy to listen to and he makes them fun to listen to. He often relates concepts to diseases and disorders, and is able to explain the material clearly. He posts study guides and helpful videos too! If you put in the work, there is NO reason to not pass.
Took him for BIO111 as a freshman and taking him for BIO121 as a sophomore! I think he's an awesome professor and he explains things really well. His lectures are long but interesting. Just make you sure you pay attention and ask questions!
Extremely nice professor. Definitely there to help if you're willing to talk to him. Tough course, but all in all, it was an interesting class.
STUDY! This is a professor that knows everything he is talking about like the back of his hand. However, he makes the lectures long and confusing to understand and you don't know what will be on the exams. iClicker's are used so attendance is a MUST. Make sure you look over PLQ's, they are on every exam! VERY tough class, but SI will help a lot!
Professor Yates is a knowledgeable guy, that being said, he tends to go off topic. Additionally, he does not provide a study guide, and his powerpoints do not add up with the exams. Furthermore, Yates did was not very clear what the objectives of the course was. That is all.
Yates is a very knowledge guy about biology but he gets off topic a lot. His tests are hard and sometimes his powerpoints don't match the ones he posts on moodle.
yates is a very smart guy and really knows basically everything about biology however i think he thinks everyone else knows just as much as he does. his tests are very hard coming from someone who studies a lot. he asks very hard and detailed questions on his exams! beware!!
Yates loves to skip through slides on lectures telling you to learn then yourself. The tests are much more in depth than the lectures and a good portion of the things you won't even pick up in the reading (do the reading). Lab exams cover much more than you actually learn in lab so study the whole topic. He's a really nice guy, not the best teacher
He is the best professor for A&P. This class is tough and requires a lot of work and time. I took it in the summer and Dr Yates took his time on every topic, he never rushed and you had plenty of time to understand the material. He doesn't baby you the answers, you have to work hard and study hard and you should be fine.
Ok so yates is the most side tracked professor ever. We currently are 4 chapters behind every other bio class and have to rush through crucial chapters. Granted, he is a funny guy and is a little entertaining but that really doesn't make up for the fact that we are so behind. Just beware of the tangents he goes off on.
He doesn't understand that we are all learning new material right now and he just blows through chapters like they're nothing because we are so behind. He likes to go off on topics that aren't relevant. He also gives us way too much HW. You need to read on your own or you wont pass. This class is definitely a self-taught class.
Dr. Yates is an amazing professor. Exams are straight forward and completely fair. He is also a really funny guy so he makes the class much more interesting which is great. He occasionally gets side tracked though.
I cannot stand this class. I have always done very well in biology. Professor Yates is so far behind where we should be. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND FOR NURSING STUDENTS. He has very tough tests and I feel were missing out on critical chapters that he gets to sidetracked to cover. RIP to my GPA.
I wouldn't take this class as an incoming freshman. My class is over a month behind the other classes so we haven't even learned half of what is going to be on our final exam. Destroying my GPA, but hey, at least we took a whole week of lecture to talk about Zika Virus!
I really enjoyed Yates as a professor, but his lecture was so random and off topic from the chapters we were supposed to be working on. Also his exams were very hard to study for. I took BIO 207 the very first semester he taught it, so that may have had something to do with it. Be ready to teach yourself!
WORST BIO PROFESSOR EVER. Do not take Yates if you need a good GPA as a Pre-Nursing student. Grade is based off of basically 3 tests and the final. He is terrible at explaining everything. Tests are horribly difficult- even when you think you get a chapter you will fail because the questions are so hard! Never updates grades except one time!
He gets very sidetracked during lecture causing everyone to fall behind. Tests are extremely difficult. He uses iClickers. Get ready to teach yourself because the only way of passing this class is by reading the textbook and ignoring him in lecture. DONT TAKE HIM IF YOU DONT HAVE TO!!!!!!
Absolutely Horrible. He may have good intentions of teaching and lectures but his true performance does not reflected that. In the beginning of the semester he was constantly late to his own lecture, which made the class fall behind severely and his "study guides" are a joke. He expects huge amounts of prior knowledge. LISTEN, DO NOT TAKE YATES
In all honesty I was going to leave a heart felt review but I am so offended and aggravated at this point but in all honestly one word to describe this joke of a professor: TRASH
Professor Yates is okay. He knows his stuff very well and you can tell he loves what he teachers, but he often gets side-tracked which caused us to really fall behind. Don't even bother with the study guides, memorize his power point slides and the PLQ questions The material is not hard, there is just a lot of it crammed in each test. Study a lot!
I thought that Professor yates was an awesome teacher. He was very good at giving feedback and really helped me bring my 1.7 to a 3.0! Just make sure you go every lecture, read the chapter before you go to lecture, and STUDY!!!
Yates is a great professor who really wants his students to succeed. His lectures can be a little confusing because he likes to skip slides, so read the textbook religiously. Yates is very knowledgeable on biology so his exams are very detailed and require critical thinking. An understanding of the chapters instead of just memorization is required.
If you had him for Bio 111, and didn't like him, you will LOVE him for Bio 121. He's more passionate about A&P. A lot more personal, a lot more thorough, and a lot more dad jokes. What a dad.
Our class is way behind the other classes. He reads directly off the slides and/or goes on tangents that put us further behind. He plays tricks on the test questions to set you up for failure. He seems like a really good person, but I would never take another one of his classes.
Don't take any class with him. He's rude and don't want his students to pass the class
His exams are pretty tough. Also, he curves them, but not until the end so you have no idea until then and then you can't even see what happened. You just get the GPA. The Lab sucked, you spell one letter wrong and you get the whole question wrong. You get the same points as someone who left the question blank. Final thoughts?: EHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
MEMORIZATION is key for this class , but as far his teaching style it was interesting in class but he does tell you what to pay extra attention to by bolding certain things in lectures especially for the anatomy part , best bet is to go over EVERY pic he list because he choices would surprise you on exams and he doesn't mind throwing trick Q'S IN
I was nervous to take Yates because he didn't have great ratings here, but I love him :) he's one of the funniest profs I've had, and he makes the class really interesting. It's super tough, but that's not his fault. This course is incredibly challenging. Be prepared to dedicate time and do lots and lots of studying, and if you do, you'll be fine:)
Is all over the place. Teaches well but tests are EXTREMELY hard. You take quizzes after every lectures. HARD GRADER
I was beyond nervous taking Prof Yates because of the reviews. Needless to say, Yates is my favorite professor I have come across at OU. While you do need to read and pay attention to in class lecture bc the material is difficult&iClicker points, as long as you feel you have a good understanding of the topics you will be OK. Yates is the BEST
He is a good professor but you have to work a lot. Reading the book is really important because the test questions are complex and you have to completely understand the material. PLQs help you prepare for the test but its information heavy. There are no test replacements/drops. However, he is likely to curve the grades at the end of the semester.
I thought Yates would be a very difficult professor. It takes a little while to get used to his style but once you are used to it, and as long as you put in A LOT of time to study, you will do fine! He provides a lot of resources for students to do good and he is great for asking questions via email and during office hours. Great personality too!
You have to read the textbook, it is EXTREMELY helpful for his finals. He was a pretty good lecturer, there are some things I wish he went into more detail on, however his slides have all of the information, STUDY THEM. I made flashcards and did fine, just have a good study tool besides reading the slides, because that probably won't help you.
Dr. Yates is a very funny professor and he is very passionate about what he teaches. He is a great professor and he always answers questions. His exams are very, very easy if you prepare. A lot of the exam questions come from his PLQ's and the rest of them are pretty straight forward. Highly recommend him.
professor Yates is great. he is tough and gives a wide range of information to study for on test, however he is extremely helpful information wise and approachable. He wants his students to do well and really wants them to know the information. Its a lot of info, but he does his best to explain. Very nice guy. Would recommend to anyone. study A LOT
Dr Yates makes lectures interesting by being such an optimistic character. The class material is difficult but Dr. Yates presents it in a semi pleasing way. I enjoy going to his class.
I was scared to take this class with Yates as my professor. But he really cares about the success of his students and is a super kind guy! He explains things very well in his lectures, but you have to put in a ton of extra time outside of class if you want a good grade. In other words, if you don't want to work a lot, take another professor.
Even though Professor Yates was EXTREMELY NICE and VERY APPROACHABLE, his exams were VERY VERY VERY HARD and the questions on the exams are not just hard but ridiculously lengthy. He, himself, said that he makes the exams harder every year. If I knew this before, he would've been my last choice on the menu.
This class was pretty hard... I thought I was not going to get the grade I did. But biology wasn't my strong suit, it was something that was very new to me and I had to work very hard to receive the grade I did. Dr. Yates did a really good job with explaining the lectures and was really funny.
Dr. Yates was very good for intro to Bio. The material is hard enough as is, but his interesting lectures and large amounts of online homework help to boost your grade. Exams are not easy but if you study the study guides and the lecture slides they're not that bad. Great guy.
He is a very nice/funny guy at the beginning of his lectures, but by the end of his lectures you'll probably be asleep because he is so boring. His tests are just like the online homework so there isn't even a need to go to class except everyday he will randomly have an I-clicker quiz.
Dr. Yates did a phenomenal job teaching this class. Students that complain constantly about him are not putting in enough effort outside of class. This is a college class and has an extremely high workload, the professor cant hold your hand and walk you to a 4.0, you need to work for it. Study off the powerpoints and STUDY THE FIGURES he posts.
don't take his anatomy class unless you've taken it before or in high school! goes way father in depth than needed. read every page in every chapter assigned, because if you ask about the tests he will go to a specific text box on the bottom that no one reads. that being said, go in and make yourself known because he will curve you at the end.
I took Clinical Anatomy with him, you need to pay attention and do the reading but if you do he makes himself very available for extra help! He is my fav college prof by far, (If you're pre-nursing I'd recommend you taking this class by itself in the summer, it'll make it way more manageable!!!)
Get ready for long lectures. He's somewhat effective, but he just reads off of the slides. You get the slides on moodle. There are a lot of small assignments to boost your grade. Very kind and always willing to meet up to discuss your grade. Be ready to teach yourself 95% of the material. It's college, so it's hard, but it's doable.
I took BIO1200 and it was a difficult class with a high workload. It's lecture every class with 2+ iClicker questions, so you have to show up if you want the points. Do all the online assignments and study the PLQ's and PKA's to make sure you know every question for the exams. I definitely could've studied a lot more, my final was my best grade.
Prof. Yates is great! He really wants you to learn. Just show that you care and actually try and you will get the grade that you want. Hes not complicated just wants you to engage in the material. If you need a capstone class for bio I would take him.. he makes a hard class simple and straight forward.
The course itself is difficult and fast-paced but Yates gives fairly good lectures and makes sure you know when things are due. The tests cover a lot of material and you're expected to know a lot but there's plenty of extra credit. Funny guy and is willing to give you extra help
Professor Yates creates a very stressful and tough environment. Exams are not what he explains them to be. They are very difficult. In order to get an A on an exam, a student must read the book, memorize the powerpoint, and somehow know a lot more than what was discussed. A lot of things in the class are very unfair, would not recommend this class.
He's very picky, but overall a super nice and hilarious man.
A&P is hard no matter who you take it with but Yates tried his best to make it better lol. He's very funny & I kinda loved him as a person BUT content is hard and he says to know "blue key words" but then the whole powerpoint is blue.... tests are almost impossible to get A's on even tho you study forever. COVID-19 was only thing that saved me!!
Professor Yates is great! He clearly highlights the areas that you need to study for exams, and he is very accessible outside of class. He clearly explains any concepts you may be struggling with. You definitely have to work for you grade, but it's well worth it in the end. His class will definitely help you with critical thinking in future classes
I haven't got any grades from this class but I still recommend it because the professor is very easy and helpful to work with. Class is extremely meaningful and lots of interactions. He gives good feedbacks and moreover its just two presentation and two essays, which is not bad if you like to read and so research.
I took this class Fall of 2020 and we started out in person and moved to online at the end of the semester. I thoroughly enjoyed his lectures! The hardest part of this class is his tests, but they are doable if you put in the time and study hard. He did end up curving our overall grades at the end of the semester.
Gives too many diagrams that are needed to know for the exams instead of just the ones that will be on it. Material is all over the place, and exam questions are difficult. I went to class every day, took solid notes, and did all the homework and still finished with a c. Would recommend a different professor
Took BIO 2006 with him. Really hard class!! Exams were stressful but not impossible. you gotta read the textbook and slides! yates was a nice guy though, I liked him. Pay attention to his study guide figures he posts.
The tests were so unnecessarily hard. I know anatomy is difficult, but Yates expected a much more in-depth understanding on tests than we could have possibly gained from his lectures. He always ran a week behind the syllabus, but wouldnt adjust the exam schedule. I wouldnt have passed if I hadnt taken anatomy in HS. Nice guy, but bad teacher.
Great guy, but he is NOT suitable to teach A&P. He never specified what physiology we needed to know on exams, so I studied everything. The exams would focus on specifics (exam on 3 neuro chapters and one endocrine was 50% endocrine). I wouldnt suggest this class if you dont know A&P or you dont want to teach yourself. 60% was his exam average.
I took BIO 2006 with Yates and it was not an easy class by any means. His exams are very difficult as he likes to get into the little details. He was pretty understanding of students if they needed accommodations. Wasn't a horrible professor but get ready to work and don't be afraid to ask questions.
I took yates for Anatomy last semester. VERY VERY hard class. Get ready to eat, sleep, breathe anatomy. You have to read the textbook and slides. Also pretty much have to know everything in the book/slides because he wants you to know everything. He is a great guy and truly cares but it was a VERY hard class. Lab exams were easier than lecture exam
Was very easy to work with. Very understanding of mistakes and helped if you needed anything. Responds to emails very timely if email was relevant. Really worked toward everyone doing well in the class.
He is a super caring guy, however, the tests and material are unbearably hard. I would study 20-25 hours a week and still receive bad grades, because lecture material is hardly gone over. Lab exams are written, but way easier than lecture exams. Usually 2 weeks behind schedule and makes test still on time, b/c he crams half the material day before
He was easily approachable. However, when it came to testing, he was very nitty-gritty about details. Like you basically had to know everything about everything in order to do well on his exams. He also crammed material if we were too behind which was definitely a downside because we already had to know so much.
Professor was very good, but his exams were terrible. Covers a lot of material and not very specific on what to study. He was easily approachable and very nice in labs. Lab exams are written and lecture exams were multiple choice. His lab exams were easier than lecture exams. If you take him, be prepared for hard tests and a lot of studying.
Professor Yates is clearly passionate about what he teaches, and can be a very entertaining lecturer depending on your sense of humor. He is easy to talk to and has a great attitude. I took the condensed summer course so it was extremely fast paced but he got us through it. Warning: his exams are HARD. But his assignments can easily boost the grade
Good teacher. Fun lectures. You will work in his class, but he has clear expectations, and he cares a lot about teaching. One of the best teachers I have had at Oakland University. Highly recommend.
Very exam and lecture heavy.
exams are extremely difficult
Dr. Yates is probably one of the best professors I've ever had. His lectures are actually very entertaining and he explains confusing topics very well. He is very understanding if you have any personal issues and is willing to work with you towards your success. He also loves it if you participate in class, be sure to do so!
Does not care about ur grade, not understanding, and lies about material. Exams are extremely difficult and barely correlate with his lectures and materials he gives. Lab exams are written and lecture exams you have 1 hour to answer 110 questions. If you have to take a&p RUN from him.
This class was HARD but Dr Yates is more than willing to help you out 1:1 if needed. He knew me by name, in a class of 60+ students. Yates is hilarious and makes anatomy so interesting. He uses iClicker in class, so you have to attend lectures to get full points. He offers a LOT of extra credit. I 110% recommend him for A&P!
The exams are crazy hard. You'd have to do a lot of studying to get at least a B-. Lab exams are easier but a lot of them had some conceptual questions that are worded the same on the lecture exams. Read the textbook, pay attention to his lectures, and you'll probably end up somewhere around a B. But please study up!
Don't take him. You will not get over a C on his exams. This goes for BIO 1200 and anatomy. He even said himself he wouldn't be able to get an A/B on his own exam from how difficult he makes. Doesn't respond to emails, rude and snappy, and boring lectures. If you needed someone to help you choose a professor, its me. Do not take Professor Yates.
Professor Yates is awesome but a heavy lecture class. Need to read the textbook, draw the pictures from it, make flash cards, etc. For anatomy he goes fast but he's willing to meet one on one or during office hours. He offers extra credit and he said on his own that he makes the tests hard. He does i-cliker and read everything.
Great professor, very enthusiastic about biology and he certainly knows what he's talking about. People like to complain because his class can be difficult, but ultimately if you do the work and listen to what he has to say it's definitely possible to get an A. You can just tell he's passionate about what he teaches and loves what he does.
Professor Yates has some of the most interesting biology-related lectures that I have watched so far. Unfortunately, Professor Yates's exams are quite difficult, requiring extensive studying. I recommend taking his class if you are up for the challenge and your goal is to gain knowledge.
Professor Yates is an amazing biology professor. I highly recommend taking him. The class is obviously difficult but if you put in the time and effort you will do good in his class. His lectures are so interesting and he is clearly very passionate about biology, which was helpful. His exams are hard, but make sure you study the PLQs!! nice guy.
Professor Yates is a good guy, but dear god those exams are hard. There is so much material covered in this class, that if you're not a biology major and just taking this as a required science elective then be aware that there is a LOT of work, the exams are brutal, and attendance is mandatory as he uses this "iClicker" system for every class.
Yates is a very hard teacher to take he talked a lot and his exams were horrible. He let us out late all the time
Truly a great professor, I was very stressed and nervous coming into this class as a freshmen but professor Yates was an incredible professor. Exams are worth 40 percent of your grade which isn't much at all. Offers very many extra credit opportunities, including surveys and has extra credit questions on each exam. I recommend him, he is awesome!
Professor Yates's class was hard, don't get me wrong, but as long as you put in the extra work outside of lectures you will do fine. He was very kind and you can tell he loves what he teaches and is very passionate about it. Lectures were helpful for breaking down the complicated material from the book, so try not to miss class if you can.
Dr. Yates keeps lectures entertaining and you can tell he has a passion for bio, which was refreshing to see. Tests are hard, but he keeps so much of your grade in your control. He did class studies for exams, which really improved my grade. He truly wants to see his students do well and I watched myself improve throughout the semester.
He uses McGraw hill connect for homework assignments and uses slides for lecture but will skip around in the slide and will ramble one side topics unrelated to the slide. Most of the slides would say to just look the information up on your own. Exams used materials from outside lectures.
Professor Yates is great! The class is tough, so be prepared to work hard. If you're looking for an easy grade, choose another class. But if you love biology and studying, it's a fantastic option. Professor Yates is passionate and knowledgeable. Pay attention; he talks a lot, but it's worth it! All Bio lovers should take Yates at least once ^_^
I loved having professor Yates! His class is very lecture heavy but exams were fairly straight forward, if you study and complete the outlines for each chapter you will do just fine in his class. He does do iclicker questions during lecture so showing up to class is crucial. He is a very nice guy and is always available if you are struggling.
I took Dr. Yates for anatomy & physiology and it was the worst class I've ever taken. The exams are very difficult and no amount of studying will get you a passing grade. He constantly refers to himself as "evil" and has admitted that he purposefully makes the class impossible to get an A in. If you have to take A&P stay away from him!!!
Amazing professor, that clearly shows love for Biology. Very engaging lectures, even though you might not feel like going to lecture at 8 am, you will want to wake up for this class. Does not have too difficult exams. If you simply take notes during lecture and do the online assignments you will do just fine. And have fun in the process :)
Professor Yates' class is challenging, but rewarding for biology enthusiasts. His lectures are engaging, though he tends to go off on tangents. Stay focused, use the textbook and resources like Unstuck ai, and you'll do well. Worth the effort!
Lecture heavy but not helpful for exams at all. Anything learned on the lectures and in class will not help on exams, class average on exam 1 was 61% and he said that's "better than expected". So unreasonable with the exam which shapes your whole grade.
I really enjoyed Dr. Yates as a professor. He connected a lot of his real world experience to the material which made it interesting. iClicker points are important, so it helps to attend class. The material is difficult so you have to be prepared to study on your own time, but he provided lots of opportunities for help outside of the class.
Yates was a nice teacher, and you can tell he loves teaching. However, his lectures were hard to follow and the exam questions were more theory based questions rather than what we actually learned on the powerpoints.
Prof. Yates was ok, very hard course and for a 1000 level class maybe should've been a little easier. All my friends in other courses told me they didn't have nearly as much homework. Difficult class, but if you put in the work you can pass. iClicker questions are worth a good chunk of grade so show up. Exams were difficult, class av. was very low!
I loved Yates. The exams are a bit hard however I only studied for the the day before and I passed them all with an A. Just study the PowerPoints and you will do great
Dr. Yates is passionate and helpful, allowing up to 10 quiz mistakes/missed without grade penalties on the in class quizzes done for attendance. Group projects are easy to ace. Homework is time-consuming but rewarding. He gives many possibilities for extra credit if you do your work. Study PLQ and PKA, the concepts on those are directly on test.
Professor Yates is very nice and passionate for what he teaches, but this course is pretty difficult. Make sure too answer all the study guides and pay attention to blue words on the powerpoints. He also uses an online textbook so try to review the PKA's and PLQ's before tests. Also iclickers can be a bit unfair.
I wouldn't take this class. The TA makes the lab exams practically impossible to pass. The pictures are blurry and most of the material will not be gone through before the exam. Expect to teach yourself most of it. For reference, I had a 5 in AP bio and 4.0 in college. Not sure I will pass this course. Mr yates is a nice guy, but not for anatomy.
VERY hard class. don't take him. attendance is mandatory bc of the random iclicker thing he does that counts toward your grade. exams were nearly impossible. our class had an average of a 58% and he said that was higher than expected. he rambles on about stuff unrelated to biology and were often let out late. please take someone else if you can!
He's very passionate about his work and is a great person, however, this class was very difficult. The exams are over 100 questions with only 1 hour to complete, making it difficult to take your time on exams so you feel rushed. He goes over time in lecture, and sometimes doesn't finish the PowerPoint, so you need to teach yourself everything.
His tests were VERY hard and seemed to cover material that wasn't really mentioned much in class. I had a lot of prior experience with neuro courses, so I knew everything prior to this class, but the tests were hard. Our class size was small, so he gave us all A's regardless of performance. Definitely recommend this class if you love neuro.
Professor Yates is a very tough professor however he is very caring and willing to help. His class is hard but if you put in the work you can do well. The exams are very hard and cover a lot of material but he provides many study resources as well as his own availability to answer questions multiple times a week.
This course is very straight forward. His lectures go off the power points and he covers everything BUT all bullets mentioned WILL be on the exam. He highlights the things in blue that you need to know and it is all blue. Very hard to accurately know everything from 5 chapters (for one exam) when 1 chapter its self has ~150 slides each. Tough exams
He offers lots of points to boost your grade for those who GO TO CLASS. This class was super challenging, but he made it worse. He misinformed us several times about what content would be on the exams and it led to lots of frustration and lower exam scores. Despite that, he is a kind person and is happy to answer questions.
Dr. Yates is very kind. He definitely cares about his students. He does iclickers for attendance and participation points. In his lectures he will highlight things in blue that will be on exams (ve
Dr. Yates shows that he cares about his students. He offers lots of extra credit. He will highlight things in blue in his slides that are on the exam. (very helpful) Dr. Yates is one of the best he is also very understanding. He does advise to read the textbook. He does a quicker questions for points and attendance. Take him if you have the chance
First exam average was 60% and it sounded like he was proud of it. Barely any explanation on the slides and you have to look stuff up on your own. Get ready to teach yourself.
Exams are hard and not clear on what to study to be well prepared. iClickers are used in class which helped with your grade. Chill dude, also very accessible outside of class and very helpful. Responds to emails quickly. Not bad for a beginner bio class
Dr Yates is a very nice dude however his exams are horribly written. Average on exams are in the 60s and he is un willing to curve. If you are pre med or taking this class for a high gpa DO NOT take him. He is very approachable but his class is hard. You will need to seek tutoring.
My problem is 100% the labs. It is just so unfair. Lab exams always feature things we have not gone over yet or were briefly mentioned so you have not had time to study it. His TA is also very harsh. I had the right answer but was marked down because it wasnt exactly textbook definition. So disappointed because Yates is otherwise pretty friendly
Professor Yates had a few exams throughout the semester; they were HARD!! They are not impossible, but it took me hours to study the material. The lectures are not very informative, and I did most learning on my own. I would take this class again, but again, it was a lot of teaching myself.
I would never take this class if I knew how it was. The study guides are useless, and nothing on them appears on the exams, which are super wordy and confusing. His lectures don't help because he rambles about random things, making class go way past the end time, so you end up teaching yourself everything. Miserable class.
Attendance was mandatory he used iclickers. Class is very lecture heavy and sometimes boring. It isn't an easy class you do need to study a lot and put in the work. If you go over the slides, especially blue words, PLQ and book you should be good. Extra credit opportunities were given. Do all the homework given those count for most of your grades.
This class was difficult, but Prof Yates tries his best to simplify it. Go to office hours, make a study group with friends, attend SI, and put in that work, take advantage of extra credit, and you will get the grade you deserve! Don't be afraid to ask questions, he is understanding and wants to help
Honestly, it's a lecture heavy class, but the professor tries to make it more manageable. The tests aren't the worst i've seen worst ones, and he even gave our class a higher grade than we would have received otherwise. Whenever I had questions he would immediately help.
Super smart and nice guy and great professor, class is very difficult but if you study every night after class you'll be fine. PLQ questions are often on exams.
