Very good teacher. Very clear and concise. Awesome class discussions. I can't believe I'm saying this about a UVU course, but I thoroughly enjoyed going to westovers class. If you are looking for a class that you'll actually enjoy and learn from, you'll find this class to fit your criteria.
He asked a lot from the students, but unlike other teachers he was very helpful in making sure that they weren't in the dark about assignments and requirements. The class organization was great and guest speakers provided real life knowledge from existing professionals in HR management.
This instructor was very helpful in the fact that he knew what he was teaching, he gave very good, clear instruction, was very timely at grading assignments and getting them back to us. This instructor is very organized and has a lot of energy and great ideas for the class.
Great class. I didn't even know really what HR was before this class and now I can see how important it is to successfully running an organization. He is really tough, but fair and provided lots of help for students, as needed. I would say he expected more out of me in this class than any other college class I have taken. And I learned the most.
Best class I have taken at UVU. I had to work my butt off, but this was the first class where I actually felt like I learned something useful. Westover is super accessible to students and makes class interesting. But he doesn't take crap from students and holds them to high expectations.
Jon is such a good teacher. I wish he taught more classes. There is an actual meaningful purpose behind his assignments, he allows for write-in responses/justifications on his multiple choice exams, and he is so willing to work with students outside of class. Best professor I have had.
Great class. Good overview of HR. Westover knows his stuff and has great class discussions. I actually enjoyed this one.
He has very high standards for our class and I was grateful. It helped me really get into the subject matter and think about it from every angle. I feel the knowledge I gained and the interest in the topic has grown immensely.
I found his student-centered attitude his greatest asset, and his knowledge of how to improve your standing as a job applicant, and things students can do now while in school to do so.
I liked that Jon was more of an open discussion teacher and used that tool to help teach. He also brought examples that would relate to us as students but also making them entertaining.
I really enjoyed the class, even though I thought that i would hate it. The class is demanding, but a lot of fun and very interesting. Jon is one of the best and most organized professors that I have had. He wants everyone to succeed in his class. He cares about being a teacher and takes pride in it.
He is great he uses good examples and is friendly with his students. He genuinely makes you interested in the class. The class made me look at Human Resource in a different way and changes the way I view it.
Good teacher, in class very informational. Discussion groups were easily the best part.
He was very organized and knew what he was talking about on the subject. He was very clear with what he expected out of every student and willing to help if needed.
Jonathan was always well-prepared. His assignments were challenging. His lectures were engaging and interesting. He was easy to get a hold of and quick to respond to questions. He allowed the students to learn from their mistakes on tests and assignments.
He constantly shared info regarding opportunities outside of class (research work, club organizations, assistant positions, etc). He was always showing us that there are ways to go "above and beyond" to further our knowledge and build our resumes. I've never had a professor do that before and I really appreciated it. He is an excellent professor.
I loved having the guest speakers come in to talk about HR issues. That was the highlight of the class. It brought the subject to life. I also loved that he tried to get students involved in extracurricular activities. I think it says a lot when professors try to get students engaged with real life experience. Not enough of that happens at UVU.
I thought it really stuck to the topic of human resources well. It really helped me understand them more because it was very concentrated material. I also really liked the blog posting, I thought he was very helpful and the course for clear.
Jon was a great teacher. His class did expect a lot out of the students, but i feel that I got out of it, what I put in. His outline and schedule worked very well for a learning environment. The assigned readings with the assignment of blogging about your reading really help my reading efficiency and ability to retain information.
Jon was highly motivated for class, always prepared was VERY precise about what he expected and helped the class reach those expectations. I truly learned A LOT and would highly recommend him. He made me stretch myself. I learned new things in this class. An ideal teacher for a University looking to make a difference. Fantastic, fantastic teacher!
The Blogging was tedious, but it helped me stay on top of the subject and stay prepared for class. The course was organized well, and Jon was willing to work with my schedule. Overall, I really enjoyed the class.
Jon was very organized. The criteria are set the first day of class. Provides effective and timely feedback to all questions. Informs students of other opportunities available on campus and tries to keep them involved. Teaches and has the students apply what is being taught. Overall a very organized and good teacher.
Very detailed and knows exactly what he wants, also extremely knowledgeable about HR. Enjoys teaching and is excited about it. Very helpful and willing to help at any time.
Jon really knows his stuff and is very helpful and willing to work with/help students. Putting us into groups and then having us discuss the readings was very helpful and interesting to hear others responses. He pushes harder than any other teacher and requires a lot from his students. I find it helpful and learn a lot more this way.
He was knowledgeable about the subject. He had some interesting ways of teaching with visual aids, video clips, guest speakers, and lectures. He responded very promptly to emails. He always posted everything on blackboard. I like being able to get partial credit on test questions missed if we write a response to it.
I became more interested in Human Resources because of this class. I also liked the visual aids he used and the guest speakers. He was by far the quickest professor I've ever had to give feedback, respond to emails, and genuinely cared. It was a good class and a great instructor.
We're not in freakin grad school or in a Masters program so chill dude.
Good teacher, nice guy. He is a pretty straight forward guy. Lectured every class period, required to blog each class period on readings from text and discussions. Research paper was a little intense, and tests were challenging. Pretty good class, achieving a B isn't too difficult. He was semi-willing to help outside of class. Slightly strict.
I liked Jon as he was very personable. He is very knowledgeable and is open to ideas and suggestions from his students. He varied the way he presented his topics whether by quest speakers or video clips and lectures. Interesting class and good instructor.
The mixed up format was helpful. It wasn't just lecture. The class was broken into other segments like discussions. There was a good variation of presentation methods. The blog was a pain but got me to internalize my reading better. The lecture wasn't verbatim from the text.
This course provide very useful information about HR and I am sure it will help me a lot when I start my career. Also, the instructor prepared very well and encourages students to study hard. I strongly recommend this class to other students.
Really was a well taught and easy to follow class. Only thing I ever had frustrations with was writing the chapter summaries every week though I can see the reasoning behind them. Likely me just being lazy!!
Very informative. Very fair. Good response timing. Also, I liked being put in to groups, it was nice to have people I knew and could get notes from if needed
Excellent teacher. Very clear and knowledgeable on the subject. Always willing to answer questions when asked. Made subject meaningful to our daily life.
He did respond to emails quickly and timely. He does know what he is talking about and that helps when there are questions and when explaining certain subjects. Also, He helped us to discuss our views and be able to see others views.
I realize that its a 3000 class but this isn't the only class and most of us have family and jobs that we have to take up a lot of our time. this class had a lot of work, and constant attention to keep up with a constant flow of work.
I think that there is far too much info and work to be done in this class. Some of the activities, papers and the depth of the information would be better suited for someone who actually wanted to go into Human Resources rather than for people in different majors who are required to take the course and have little interest in actually going into HR
He knows the subject because he has been living it for a long time. It was easy to find his passion about it. He knows exactly what he wants from each student. He is very quick about getting back to any student that may have a question.
Way too much busy work. One of the assignments that bothered me the most is the peer critique assignment. We are in college now. If my peer doesn't know how to write a research paper by now, using proper grammar and such, then that is his or her problem. I shouldn't have to spend time at the end of a busy semester helping them improve their grade.
Felt like there was a lot of busy work, especially with the blog. Could be more lenient on late work. I also had troubles with the test study guides. I felt they could have been more helpful had they been put in a question format so I knew exactly what I needed to know.
Very well organized. The topic is very important to the business world and Professor Westover made it interesting to study and do assignments. Assignments weren't easy but they made me stretch my limits. He held very high standards but was very willing to help outside of class. And he gave very timely feedback.
Don't treat the subject like it has life or death implications, take away the busy work(nightly homework) because there's enough big assignments and tests already.
There is really a lot of work, assignments, papers, readings to do for this class, and students with other classes have a hard time keeping up and completing all of the assigned work. Granted it is an upper level class. Overall he is a very good instructor.
This is not the only class that most people have. At times in my opinion he seems to act like we are in a Masters Human Resource class, and he gets pretty particular. Take it easy on the work load. Great job teaching though...enjoyed it.
It seems like a lot of work for the class. Also, I did not like the late work policy. Most everyone in a night course has a family and works full time, if one or two assignments are turned in within the week I dont feel they should be penalized for being late. But overall I liked the class
The tests were extremely hard. Not everything that was on the test was taught in lectures. Also, there was a ton of reading to do. Some teachers allow students to make assignments up. Be a little more lenient. We have lives and sometimes life gets in the way.
I feel that there are too many writing assignments for this class. Writing a research paper is expected, however, with the other writing assignments I felt like he was working us up to being able to do the research paper. I simply felt that it made the course more time intensive than was necessary.
More in-class activities, guest speakers, and more video clips. I enjoyed The Office clips that started the days conversation. I would try to include more, it gets students interested in the discussion and is helpful of what not to do. Remember that you are teaching HRM not writing composition and focus on HR. Keep being friendly to students.
Do more teaching, you let us do most of the teaching.
Westover is a good guy and was a good teacher. He was a very organized teacher and had pretty clear expectations, but I think he demanded too much of students in his class. We all have busy lives and he treated HR like it was the most important thing ever. He would only allow for late assignments with a grade penalty and no late tests.
I could have cared less about HR, but Westover made it pretty interesting, and I can now see why it is important... he is pretty strict with due dates and such, but always lets us know what the expectations are in advance, so I don't know everyone is complaining about... it is an upper-division college class after all...
Class was tough. Westover has high expectations for student work and holds students to high standards... While I liked him just fine, I felt like he should have been more lenient with grading.
Don't know about the class at this point, but Westover has been really quick to respond to my questions by email.
Man there is lots of stuff required for this class. Discussion topics each chapter, blog posts each week, big assignments. All just very confusing and hard to keep straight.
Tough class, but I love all of the guest speakers and in-class discussions. The first assignment (interview compare/contrast paper) was challenging, but a very good assignment and I learned a lot.
good instructor make the class interesting and you will actual learn a few things
GREAT TEACHER-very smart & structures his class so that u will actually learn from it. Teachers at UVU could learn a lot from him. It's very possible to get an A, but like any class, if u want to get an A it will take time & effort. Test corrections are awesome & all the assignments may seem overwhelming but they really help in the end w/ ur grade
Jon is very helpful and his teaching lectures are easy to follow. He is very hard in his grading but the grade you get will be the one you deserve. He is very fair and is always willing to help.
its amazing that the ones that give you the worst grade teacxh you very little
Course Structure and schedule was followed closely. This made it easy to come prepared each day.
Challenging, but very informative. I learned a lot from this class.
He knows a lot about the subject! He had us do some great things that got us involved in the subject. I like that it wasn't all about passing the test! SUPER GOOD
Great Class and awesome teacher. Made it challenging and fun.
He was always willing to help you in his office. He taught very clearly and was very knowledgeable. he had many guest speakers come and give great lectures.
I really liked the teacher and the class discussions held. A lot of good topics were conversed. I also liked having to do the interview paper.
Very time demanding class. If I could go back I would take this class from a different teacher. I think you would learn the same material and most likely save tons of time.
The teacher is a great guy. Not a good teach is my opinion though. The same tedious assignments due every week over and over again. Very repetitive. Has required more out of class time than any class I have ever taken at UVU. I wish I could have taken this course with a different professor.
Worst class I have taken at UVU. Take from someone else, you will cover the same material and save a lot of time.
This class is really tough, but I have learned a ton about HR. The hybrid class format is challenging (lots of online stuff to do outside of class) but the workload is reasonable since we only meet in class once a week. While there are a zillion repetitive assignments, there are unique ones too, and he is very clear on expectations and is helpful.
Jon has a lot of experience in this area. Also the class was service learning so we had good projects and Jon was able to help with the experience he has. It was a good class.
He really knew the material and was passionate about it. He also required a lot which helped push me and helped me really learn the material.
Dr. Jon visit class in China and have the deep thought and fun activity for our learning. He is very nice man and good teacher.
He responds to emails within a few hours. VERY organized. he goes over everything that is due the next week, never leaves you guessing. He plans everything out on a calendar for you. There are no surprises. He is willing to take the time with students to go over anything they may not understand. Very helpful and easy to work with.
I really enjoyed this class. It was a very informative class and Dr. Westover did a great job at explaining things. I would highly recommend him to anyone. There was a lot of work but it was all helpful to the learning.
This was not a class that I needed for my major but I wanted to take it due to I am a business owner. I felt it was the first class I have taken business wise where the instructor knew what he was talking about. I also felt like the class applied to today's world.
Even though I never have written so much for a course, my writing ability increased tremendously because of the course outline! You can ask my wife!
I have never had a professor give such meaningful and INCREDIBLY quick responses to my homework and assignments. You are such a responsible professor, and I appreciate feeling like my college dollars were well spent. It was a lot of work, but I actually learned a LOT in the class. Thank you Jonathon.
Professor Westover is very knowledgeable. I also think he is respectful, responds to questions right away, and definitely gives feedback about student performance in a timely manner. He is a great teacher, especially for those on the HR track.
This class is super straightforward and low maintenance. The tests are hard but if you read the book and/or pay attention in class they are fine. Westover is knowledgeable and respectful to students. Quick feedback on assignments and you can tell he actually reads what you wrote.
Great class. Lots of writing.
Professor Westover is one of the best instructors I've ever had! He gives great and immediate feedback. Is respectful, willing to work with you and very knowledgeable. Weekly assignments. As long as you read all of the information, you will do great. All open book, open notes. Gives ample time to complete research paper! Would take him again!
Heavy on homework load, but clear on expectations and approachable. Start on homework assignments ahead of time if possible. This is an easy to manage class if you stay on top of the homework assignments. Make sure you make time to read!
Ok class, lots of busy work each week, but not hard. No textbook used. 2 papers and 2 tests. Not hard if you show up and do the homework. Papers will take lots of time.
I took this class for fun and I feel like it wasted my time. I got good grades but the load is ridiculous . This class is introductory, but does not go into enough detail. The assignment expectation seemed to change throughout the semester and feedback was incredibly vague. I could have gotten more information from a hefty google search.
He is an amazing teacher! I took this class as a hybrid and it worked really well with my schedule. His work isn't hard if you take the time to do them. If you listen and follow his instruction you should easily get an A. I will take more classes from him. I would highly recommend, we didn't take any test, we just did the 2 major papers quizzes, hw
Jon is a great professor. I've taken several classes from him. He does expect a lot from his students (which is fair because he teaches upper division classes). He is great at responding to emails and giving good feedback. Although his class is hard, it is SO worth taking. Just be sure to get a good group. This will make your live so much easier!
I am taking the hybrid course. The in class portion can be interesting because he has guest speakers come in every week. But the homework assignments are worthless busy work. You have to write about 1000+ words a week and you are expected to BS those 1000 words because you could get your point across for the assignments in about 150.
Jon is very knowledgable in the HR field. His class consists of a case writing, activity, and quiz each week with reflections every two weeks, and two large projects. He has guest speakers come in every week to talk about the module. The only downside is all the writing you have to do.
Most of your grade is based on the group project you do. You do consulting work with a company to create training programs for humanitarian work. The other material includes case write-ups, quizzes, and reflections.
This class was very time consuming. The bulk of your grade is based on a group project, but you also have weekly coursework. Each week you are required to have a group meeting, read a chapter and take quizzes, a discussion post, and write a paper based on a podcast or case study. He grades harshly on the group projects, but easy grader on the rest
Give feedback and diligent but administration please help this professor know that he is enough. Westover has deep insecurities and is crying out for attention often leveraging minority issues in class just to be heard. Maybe this is why one becomes a teacher in order to get someone -anybody to listen to you? I have known him for 3 years.
The class has a heavy workload, but Professor Westover provides helpful feedback. The group project is the main focus, but the weekly coursework, including quizzes and case studies, is also manageable. Unstuck ai was a great tool for preparing for the quizzes.
