Professor has a pass/fail mentality in a course which is a prerequisite for all econ majors.
He uses the first exam to screen out a lot of students so that either really hard-working / smart students stay in the class. Too much work for too little relevance. He has very good intentions though, and tries really had to help if you go to office hours.
Lectures are way to fast, test and quizzes are irrelevant to the material and given on that days lecture.
He expects you to do a lot of work and the only way to find out how to get the answer to the problem sets is to go to his office hours.
After reading others comments on Kim, I feel pretty sad for him, cuz he is really a hard working professor. Those who got bad grade is simply because they do not study and expect to get an A! His class is not very interesting, coping his notes all the time. If u finished his practice problems, u will do fine in his exams.
I know his classs is not an easy class but he deserves praise for his passion and he is really a nice person too. Students who do not well in his class, they just need to work harder. The tests are really straight forward as long as you work on every problem sets he gives to you. Dont be a loser. It's your fault if you dont do well in his class.
He is very straight forward. Just understand his problem sets and study his examples and you should be fine. Though his tests are hard and the averages are pretty low, he is generous with the curve.
He's tough. But he is always ready to help you attempt to understand and if you work hard, do the problem sets you will get it. You will probably not get the best grades on his tests, but if he thinks you work hard and legitimately are trying, he will give you a good grade. He's very sweet too. Actually one of my favorite professors.
I don't know why the average is always low but actually i did pretty well on every class. He is always willing to help students!
Kim is one of the worst professors I have ever had. He has an accent that is hard to understand, and hammers through lectures, barely stopping to for students to finish writing. He actually laughs at you when you answer a question wrong. Not approachable for office hours and appears not to care about his students at all. He's brilliant, but awful.
Tough, but you learn a lot in his class. Go to class, take good notes, attend his "optional" study sessions and you'll do fine. Despite low test score averages, he gives a huge curve at the end of the semester, so most people do fine.
People should spend more time with this kind of "Asian style" professor. He is all about his students and his class. You will never find another one who always stays at school the weekend before each exam so students can find him if they have questions. It is a hard class though, I wish I could have spent more time on it.
Avoid, avoid, avoid!!!! You're not going to learn anything except how to prove formulas, which is great if you want to get a Phd in Math.
He really cares about his students, and you'll learn a lot through his lengthy problem sets, but I wouldn't take the class again. Not worth the countless hours you have to commit to the class. You'll put in far more time and effort with Kim to get a worse grade than you would with another professor.
Mr. Kim was by far the worst professor I have ever had in my entire academic career. The man cannot speak clear English and refuses to accommodate those who cannot understand his very heavy accent. Additionally, he teaches at a very fast rate and leaves the confused to fend for themselves. Many others have also failed I had to withdraw and transfer
He''s accent is way too strong for me. He loves to give personal speeches at the end of some classes. I don''t feel I''m in college I feel like going back to primary school. He loves to help you but he wounldn''t listen to your thinking but how he thinks. His memory is amazing. He doesn''t take attendance but he knows by heart who comes or not.
Pros: Offers a lot of office hours. Will help you if you try. You will learn a lot. Generous curve. A C will become an A- at the end of the semester. Cons: Super hard. Most of the class is proofs. The tests are hard. Expect to get a D on the tests. Conclusion: DO THE QUIZZES. Go to office hours. Ask for help. He will help you if you ask
This class should never be taken with this professor. He is dreadful. If you were educated in the United States, you most likely will not do well. Applied math majors even struggle. Best advice: Be Korean. Not only is he more helpful to them, but he also is not mean to them. Don't believe the curve; he fabricates the average.
Dr. Kim cares a lot about his students and wants everyone to learn. He wants to see that you work hard. Go to office hours and do the problem sets!! It's very obvious he works hard preparing for lectures and being available for students. A teacher like him deserves a higher rating.
Dr. Kim is incredibly intelligent and thorough. He expects success. However, in no way does that make him a good professor. 3 reasons: About 15 pages daily of fill-in-the-blank notes-- bad for comprehension, the tests are impossible w low averages, and you have to grind homework problems to learn. You don't learn; you memorize. Avoid if possible.
Dr. Kim is truly a genius. However, he expects that his students have the same math-based thinking. Don't take if you are more of a conceptual thinker because he uses proofs and difficult priblem sets to explain concepts. Dr. Kim values persistence and attendance. If you find yourself doing poorly on tests, it is VITALLY important to stay engaged.
Kim is an incredibly difficult teacher. Not only is he hard to understand, the material covered in class is incredibly challenging. In his stats class, be prepared to learn difficult proofs, double integration, complex concepts usually reserved for econometric. On the first test, 13 of class got less than 50%.
I know a lot of people try to avoid him because he's difficult and strict. But, I went to office hours frequently and I can tell he really cared about what his students learned. You'll have to work hard to get an A but it's definitely doable.
LOVE HIM! one of the best professors I've met at Emory. He works so hard!
Most students think his class is hard, but it's no if you work hard. The problems on the exam are almost the same as the ones on the quizzes. Therefore, if you do the problems sets he gives to you, you will get an A! There are about 20 points curve for each exam! Also, he knows everything related to economics, you'll learn a lot beyond textbook.
Kim makes you work for the A. He knows who goes to class and office hours (DO BOTH). Do ALL of the quizzes he hands out. He expects meticulous notation, graph work, etc. He is knowledgeable. Expect a decent amount of math. Proofs aren't too bad if you can keep track of a few variables. Generous curves. (B- curves to an A). Take if you want to learn
Prof Kim is a good guy. Before midterms/final he gives really deep life advice about working hard and learning from your mistakes. His "hw" are take home quizzes but if u go to office hrs he'll explain everything. His tests are basically studying/redoing all the quiz questions& lectures. U fill-in his lecture notes in class, no textbook needed!!
He is the best Economics professor in Emory. He is funny in the class and it is easy. You might regret not taking his class.
I know a lot of people suggest not to take his class. But you really learn a lot in his lectures! His notes are clear and easy to follow and if you use his office hours he is willing to explain everything to you and make sure you understand. He is also a very approachable professor as long as you work hard.
Professor Kim is the best professor I have had at Emory and I am a senior. The workload is minimal, the tests don't require much preparation, and his lectures are collaborative. He is very inspirational and caring, especially if you go to office hours. I would highly recommend econ/b-school students to take his class!
Definitely would take this class again. Took it last semester and thoroughly enjoyed the professor and the class. He is nice and is willing to spend one on one time with you. Will also give you life lessons when you need them the most. Class isn't too hard (got an A without putting too much work in).
He is the best professor in Econ department. I am taking this class right now and it is definitely easy A if you put some effort to learn. Some students sometime argue about the quizzes but they are actually straight forward and helpful for tests.
Professor Kim is no doubt one of the tougher professors at Emory. Although he's undoubtedly very knowledgable of the content, he does a very poor job teaching it in class. He speaks way to fast for anybody to follow and he expects way to much from the students. He is also quite mean too. There's a reason students try to avoid this guy...
He seems to be serious but actually is a nice guy. If you go to his office hour he would be very glad to help. Though it's hard to get high scores since he is a tough grader, he gives a lot of bonus quizzes. If you review his handout carefully it will not be hard to get an A.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. I have never seen a professor who's so rude when students ask question. What's more. His exams are nightmares. He's a terrible professor AND person. I vouch my life for that. Fortunately for those who are taking ECON220 next year, there's another option. Don't take this guy
Seems like a tough class but is actually not. Yes the final exam is unreasonable but with so many bonus points, you can easily get a good grade even if you leave a few questions blank. Overall doable if you constantly put in effort.
worst prof and person
Horrible professor. My only advice is don't take him.
I was concerned when I first read the comments here but he is an easy grader. After so many complaints from students, he provides several extra credit opportunities and curves that makes this class very easy. I would definitely recommend him.
The class was quite frankly a nightmare. Even though we share the same background, I couldnt understand because of his accent and he spoke way too fast. The tests are incredibly difficult and I can assure you that none of the things you have learned in that class will ever be required of you in higher level economics class. Do. Not. Take. Him.
Hardest class I've taken at Emory, and not because I didn't understand the statistics/math. He grades HARSHLY. You must have exact notation, or else you will get little credit. Average on the exams was in the 60's, and there is no curve. Must endure office hours to get extra credit, but he is always so judgey about everything and mean.
This class was my first time I got partial credit for a right answer and a right solution. It turned out Professor Kim forces you to memorize HIS way of solving problems as well as a plethora of formulas (learning both by heart is redundant and time consuming). His classes are crazy hard but are curved wildly. His explanations are inconsistent.
Dr. Kim is actually not that bad. Although his assignments are hard and he himself can be very intimidating in class, he is very kind and helpful during office hours. Overall, he is a nice dude.
He was nice during office hours but he is way too rigid. He doesn't know how to adapt and doesn't realize that we are students with other classes as well. Our lives don't revolve around econ 220. He also doesn't teach he just basically reads off of the slides and will get annoyed easily if you email him too much or ask "dumb" questions.
The worst professor in my Emory experience. Abstracts difficult concepts across hundreds of sheets of paper that you MUST print out to succeed. Adds pressure for pressure's sake. Would be easy to fall asleep or tempting to skip if not for the fact that he will actually fail you just for missing 2+ classes. Horrible accent.
Strict and intimidating, but he's a good guy at heart and wants the best for his students. He wants everything done his way, which is annoying. Tests are difficult and grades are low, but through weekly "bonus quizzes" you can bring your grade up significantly. Need to go to office hours. Hated by many, but you'll learn a ton and appreciate him.
The worst professor I ever had at Emory by a mile. I was struggling with depression when I had him as a professor and I did not attend class 3-4 times in a row. When I returned, this guy singled me out in front of the whole class and shamed me for not attending. Highly recommend you to avoid him and pick a professor with more tact.
I ended up dropping this class for mental health's sake. This person is absolutely unqualified to teach. He may be a great researcher and consultant, but he is absolute nightmare for econ. I graduated 4 years ago and I still regret taking him as a professor due to how terrible he is. I have used 0 concept from his class in real life. ZERO.
I'm a senior, and this is the first time I've ever reviewed a prof. By far the worst I've ever had. Midterms had averages in the mid 60s. He promised some curve at the end of semester, but gave no details. Assigns tests on weekends, not during class time, but never answers email over weekends. Grades with absolutely no consistency. Do not take.
Very Easy. Take his class
Dr. Kim is a fantastic instructor and really wants the best for his students and pushes them to really understand statistics and apply it well. Participating in class and attending office hours is super important. The latter half of the class does have a faster pace and the final exam is substantially more difficult than any midterm.
Can be very intimidating in class (goes quickly), but I've never seen a prof more willing to help students outside of class. Almost always willing to meet at any time, genuinely wants students to succeed. I struggled a lot in this class bc of mental health. Most profs would've given up with how far behind i was, but he helped me get back on track
Attendance is important. If you do miss email him beforehand with your excuse! He rewards perfect attendance greatly. Also, go to his office hours as much as possible. He helps you with the homework, quizzes, and even tests. Two exams and a final that you could submit corrections for up to 80% points back. The corrections need to be precise though.
Jong Kim can come off as strict or intimidating, but I think he is genuinely a nice professor. HW can be difficult, but he is willing to schedule office hours over the weekend. There are pop quizzes and take-home quizzes. He let us do midterm corrections to get partial credit back. The final was curved.
The material is complicated and his handouts are confusing. However he is accessible outside class and will go over the hw with you. Attendance is important, and he occasionally calls on people in class. There are 2mts and a final. The final is hard, but he has a resubmission policy for all tests. As long as u stick to what he wants you'll be good
He seems cannot grasp the keystone: his handouts are so confusing and difficult while spending too much time in class explaining those easy concept, but he is accessible outside the class, holding office hours everyday.
Professor Kim might seem intimidating but he's very enthusiastic about teaching. He was so accessible outside of class and would schedule office hour every day before midterms/finals. His exams were not at all difficult if you just practice with old exams that he provide. He requires you to put in some work tho
I have never met a professor that puts so much effort into helping students like Dr. Kim. He can be intimidating at first but he can become a great mentor if you attend his office hours frequently to ask for help with quizzes and homework. He will reward you greatly if you show hard work as he really wants students to achieve great things in life.
Great prof, he cares about his students and it shows. BUT watch out for exams--he will test you on concepts learned the class before the exam. Said the final(40%) was cumulative, but it was 80% on topics covered in the last 2-3 weeks when no HW(the only practice material you have) was given. However, he is generous with grading, so there's hope.
He doesn't speak English well. He is rude to his students. He reads off stuff from the ppt. DO NOT TAKE HIM OR YOU WILL SUFFER.
Prof. Jong Kim is one of the most caring professors at Emory. He cares a lot about his students's learning, SO accessible outside of class (go to office hours!!!), and encourages them to correct their mistakes. His curriculum is one of the hardest material I ever covered, but you learn a lot about econ. Take this if you're ready to work.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS NO MATTER WHAT
Professor Kim is accessible outside of class and helpful during the daily quizzes (don't ever miss class) his exams are horrible. They're done through Canvas, if your answer is typed different than what it's "supposed" to be, it's marked wrong. Exam questions go beyond in class concepts and are impossible to finish. Take this class at your own risk
Professor Kim is a great professor during lectures. however, his quizzes every class and the sense that you MUST be attending every single class are suffocating. Nevertheless, he gives very very generous curve and, personally speaking, you should be able to pass his class with an A/A- if you just attend all his lectures.
Dr. Kim wants you to learn, and to succeed in the class you need to come to every single class and go to office hours. His lectures are him reading off the slides, he isn't great at answering questions but the saving grace is that he is generous with the final curve because he knows the class is hard.
Super caring professor. Might seem as a harsh person at first, but as long as you show efforts and tenacity, he will like you.
Can be intimidating at first but he has high standards and expectations for how you do your work. He gives lots of extra credit if he likes you and has so much office hours to help you if you're confused. You will have to tolerate his rants a bit but he seems to genuinely want the class to do well.
Perhaps the worst professor you'll come across at Emory. Please by any means avoid this class. He fav0rs certain students, and gives them bonus points in accordance with that. He misleads you about your grade, and is dish0nest. Not to mention some of the controversial things he says in his rants about politics, vaccination, society, and students.
Class material was extensive and tough, but was explained well in lectures and handouts. He's easily accessible and gives tons of extra credit to boost grade. Insists on giving most of the class an A or A- so he'll boost your grade if you come to class and pay attention.
Prof. Kim is a super caring person. His course is not easy at all, but he will reward hard-working students who never miss any class. Lots of office hours, always there to help you & gives sufficient bonus to help you succeed. 100% recommended if you truly want to learn stuffs.
I struggle to understand how Emory university can employ someone like him. This class singlehandedly made me reconsider a major in Economics, even as I am almost done with the requirements. I genuinely believe I left this class with a worse understanding of macroeconomics than I did at the beginning of the semester. I beg you to not take Jong Kim.
Should be fired - hope this helps.
Explains the concepts clearly once you get over his accent. All of the information is in his handouts and tests are based on questions you have seen before and can easily study. Gives lots of extra credit to ensure you get a good grade if you pay attention and attend class.
Thinks he's smart, but really only has his own slides and questions memorized. No empathy for his students: multiple instances where students were berated for being late or asking questions. Exams have no partial credit with answers rounded to the fourth decimal (i.e. if you are off by 0.0001, then you get 0%). Uses class to exert power
I agree with others saying this professor should be fired. The professor frequently interjects personal opinions on current political events during lectures. These opinions inadvertently influence students' perspectives. Teaching style is extremely monotonous—delivered orally in a way that is difficult to follow—which makes it hard to concentrate.
If I had to take him for intro econ, I would've dropped the major altogether because of how badly he teaches. He claims he's "suppressing his idiosyncrasies while teaching," yet constantly pushes his current political opinions, especially in a class that is only about pure economic principles. He also has a very outdated mentality about technology.
Unclear lectures and handouts. 0 points given on assignments if you don't do it exactly the same steps he taught, even if your answer is correct. Lots of office hours. Words can't even do the bad experience justice. Save yourself the headache and avoid for ECON 212.
Somewhat boring but an easy A - he rewards good attendance and gives hw answers during office hours. Lots of opportunities to make up missed points on exams. Goes on political tangents every now and then but covers everything you need to know. Handouts are very organized. You'll know exactly what to expect, Ask questions during office hours
The day Emory fires him will be a wonderful day for our institution. I can not understand how we employ such a Professor. Do yourself a favor and take someone else. I wish I read these reviews before taking a class with him. Wow, was it a regrettable choice. I could write my Economics graduation thesis on how terrible this class is. Steer clear.
Professor Kim tells you exactly what you need to do to succeed in his class on the first day: show up to every class on time, be humble, and have a good attitude. If you do this, you will do well in the class (there's up to 5% discretionary extra credit). Office hours are apparently very helpful, although I didn't go to any and was also fine.
Jong Kim is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul; He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His names sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for Jong Kim art with me.
Easy A. take this class.
Obsesses over solution method and insists that you solve questions exactly how he has done, this shifts the focus of students from seeking adequate understanding of concepts to trying to *appease* Jong Kim. Not a very good listener and constantly interjects students when they make suggestions or ask questions (this discourages class engagement).
