Great teacher, expect to learn a lot. Gives out some EC. One midterm, one final, we had an election assignment (don't know if he'll do that since there won't be elections again for a while), a semi-difficult paper, and 2 quizzes the entire semester. Attendance isn't optional, you don't go to class or you show up late expect to lose some points.
If your major is not political science don't take this guy.He gives out a ton of work. I guess he forgets that all his students have other classes too, not to mention our other non-academic responsibilities. The books he picks are really boring and he takes months to give back test grades and his assignments. Hes very unorganized and unfair in work
Honestly..the best and funniest Prof. I have ever had. Don't get me wrong, the class is challenging, but it also very rewarding Prof. Kil genuinely cares about his students and their comprehension of the material. If you are willing to work hard and are interested in the course material I would highly recommend this teacher.
He is a cool guy. My section was a bunch of slackers. Expect to do work! But B is def. do-able! He has very funny mannerisms and he has an accent that adds to his funniness. And the spit thing is really a little speck of spit-foam that is constantly on his lower lip...a.k.a. sit in the back to stop from staring.
I took Professor Kil's online Political Science 1 class. Only one assignment per week:quiz, discussion or essay (500 words). It's a must to read or at least note important facts in book before taking the quizzes. Some writing skills needed to get full points on essays. Make sure you keep up on your points, if so should be easy to get an A!
I took this class online and did not like this professor. Any time I challenged his grading he wouldn't give me the credit due, using the required textbook. And he did not make the complete assignment directions clear (i.e. create title). I just felt like he was out to get me the whole class.
I took the online class. There's at least two assignments per week. He grades essays very tough. Don't bother challenging. He acknowledged a mistake he made to me, but still denied me the points. But between him and Fahimi, your'e better off with him.
He grades essays harshly and don't bother contesting anything. He doesn't curve anything as my entire class failed the midterm he said we were all bad students. Just study really hard and focus on the book primarily. I pulled a B with some effort.
Avoid Joon Kil if you can. Extremely difficult. No passion in his teaching style.and very rude personality.
I took his night class his first semester, and I really liked him. You need to take notes and study but if you put forth the effort then you will pass the class. He is extremely passionate about what he teaches and I got alot out of his class.
nice guy, but not cut out to teach in my opinion. his lectures are extremely dull and his method of grading work is....odd.
i agree, avoid him. the subject is interesting, but he makes it painfully boring. he's not helpful at all, either.
Professor Kil's Honors class is not for the weak, but I can tell you right that you will be prepared for where ever you transfer. This is a must take class for any political science major! And after all is said and done, you actually feel like you have accomplished something. He is really funny too, he has had a few run-ins with the law. ha ha
Decent teacher. Most questions are taken directly out of study guides, so it's not too rough. The rest are taken out of lecture or notes, but expect 90% of questions to be off the study guide. He will give you the grade you deserve. 1-2 hours of studying a week is more than enough for an A.
Online classes can be boring, but he managed to make it interesting with great discussion questions and essay topics. He is tough on essays so make sure you present clear and well developed arguments. Site the text as much as you can and make sure you answer each question posed. However, the textbook is rather tedious and not always very clear...
Incredibly unclear. He plays favorites. If you MUST take his class, go out to lunch with him. I didn't. My classmates did, & he was more lenient with them. He clearly had a problem with me, although I turned in all of my assignments on time & visited him several times in his office. He's looking for cookie-cutter students. Ran it like an AP class.
Possibly the best professor at this school. Really knowledgeable in this subject. He has taught in UPenn Grad School before so that gives the students some respect and trust about him. not an easy class but really rewarding. MUST TAKE.
Professor is smart, helpful, and patient, but let me warn you if you don't care for the subject then it will be difficult. If you want an A then visit him in office hours and ask questions on unfamiliar topics, he knows this stuff in-depth! IF YOU'RE A POLITICAL SCIENCE MAJOR, TAKE HIM! You will be extremely prepared for any school. TAKE HIM!
he encourages students to take part in discussions and is very passionate. high portion of your grades will be done by policy paper and presentation about current issues. so don't think of studying few hours off of the study guide for an A but be actually into this subject. attendance is mandatory as well.
People that posted negative comments were likely either looking for an easy class or poli sci isnt their cup of tea. Kil is an excellent professor, just very good at what he does for a living. No its not easy but very do-able if you attend and take good notes. Quite simply hes ivy league caliber at a community college price. Take!
Mr. Kil's online class was a bit tough but definetly interesting. Just do the best you possibly can do and he will notice your effort. The experience was great!
PS1 - Political Science 1 (US Government). Personally, politics and US government are the 2 boringest things to talk about, nevertheless to study and learn about. Online class was pretty easy. 1 quiz per week along with a discussion board post. 4 short essays due throughout the summer. I really didnt learn much in this class, mainly due to me.
Professor Kil is so nice. He tells you exactly what to study. I got 100% on both of the quizzes and an A and B on the midterm and final. That being said, I didn't do so well on the essay, C, which brought my grade down a whole letter grade. So, if you are not a very good writer, I don't recommend taking his class. However, take him over Fahimi
Class is super hard. Take only if you can write. If interested in Polysci then take this class because its interesting and discussions are fun. But over all he is hard and the big paper is EXTREMLY hard
GPA Killer. Knows his stuff but very inconsiderate.
He's actually not that bad. Gives you study guides. The essay part on essay doesn't have to be complete sentence; it can be a list. I have no interest in PS, didn't try as hard, been out of school for a long time.. still got a B. If you can't handle him; how are you going to handle the school you x-fer to?
Tough essay grades. Gives direct helpful feedback on essays. However, he did not put forth much effort otherwise in this Summer Political Science class. Seemed like he was on vacation, not helpful.
I took professor Kil for fall and at first I thought it was very hard because he does lectures off PP's and sometimes is unclear. READ THE BOOK. If you read the chapters your going over you will get an A. I got an A on the first essay which was cake. I failed the midterm because I didn't read the book and tried to study from lectures. Very helpful.
His class is neither hard, nor easy. If you read the book and go over his lectures (he posts them on blackboard), then you'll do just fine! However, his essays might be a little challenging. Luckily, he is always willing to help during office hours. He doesn't grade on a curve but he gave us a couple of extra credits. P.S. His lectures are fun! :)
Taking online course, requires one assignment due a week switching from quizzes, discussion boards, and short essays. All of which have been fairly simple and straightforward. Do your work and do a good job and you'll fine. you need you rbook without a doubt, used it every week.
I would not advise taking the online course. Its a hard class with very little instruction. It would take DAYS to get replies to messages. WEEKS to get your grade on essays. When you could reach him via email he was helpful. His essay prompts could of used "key terms" and more examples. Also, felt like essays were just rewritting the chapters.
Tough class but I was ok with it. Effort definitely equals grade. Fairly straightforward format; quiz every other week, discussion and essay in between quiz weeks. Quizes are difficult and require you to really understand the text. Don't slack off so you can skip studying for the final worth 10%. :P If you're self-motivated, take this class.
He's one of the best teachers at IVC. His PS 12 Honors class is tough, but if you come to class prepared and study everyday, you don't have to cram lots of things before the test day. He's helpful especially in doing research.
My favorite teacher at IVC. He's always available to talk, and is extremely caring. Be humble and passionate about learning, and he will always be there for you. If you do not do the work, he will give you what you deserve, no question. Take him if you're committed to your studies. Otherwise, he will not pity you for slacking off.
Really enthusiastic teacher. He really cares about his class and the subject. He gives a lot of examples and encourages you to vote. If you study hard and follow his study guides, you'll do well. I would recommend him.
Excellent professor. He's funny and engaging and he tries to keep the interest up in a relatively boring class. Very easy grader and he doesn't assign many assignments. Easy A if you pay attention and memorize a vocab words.
He's funny at times. He's one of those professors that gets off track and goes off on tangents about his personal experiences, but he makes it okay. The lecture material is easy to understand and the course overall isn't too demanding. We did 2 essays and an election assignment as well as a couple quizzes on top of the midterm & final. Pretty easy!
Took the online class which was pretty easy. 9 quizzes, 1 final test, 4 discussions, and 4 essays (3 of the essays all on information in the book-so book is required). Got a B, with a little more effort could have gotten an A
One of the best professors at IVC, especially when it comes to helpfulness. He is passionate, caring and fair, but his class is also challenging. Do the work and go to his office hours. He is very interested in the individual student. Take his honors classes!
Few exams, weekly quizzes, couple paper, and few discussions. He is a stickler for grading discussion boards and papers. I get A's on JR and SR level classes for writing assignments, and he grades much lower. Not sure what his deal is. Google quiz answers. CA textbook waste of $$ use one week in class. Another wasteful gen ed class.
He is a very great professor. I like his random stories he tells from time to time. It makes class a bit fun. He explains concepts until everyone is on the same page. You do need to study a bit for the tests. You have 2 essays to do, a couple of quizzes, a midterm and a final. Not bad I must say !
Fascinating individual. He has a good Halloween story. That aside, took his class(PS 7) a few years ago...16 weeks in 8, I believe. Eye opening, and I'd lived in China before. It was Georgia v. Russia then, now it's Ukraine :) Very useful for anyone going to Asia (esp post soviet). Splendid outlook. And a map quiz for Eastern Eurpoe? Fun class.
This was a very organized and structured online course. A lot easier than I thought it would be. Gives detailed instructions and I never found myself confused. Homework and a quiz every week. Two papers (about 3 pages each), a few discussions, and a Final. Wish I didn't take the course P/NP because I ended up getting an A… Recommend!
This is one of the most challenging courses that I have ever taken. Structured like a graduate level course. Lectures, 2 tests, and a major research essay (which will make you insane). Prof Kil is a cool guy and has a lot of funny stories to tell. Very straightforward and willing to help IF YOU ASK FOR IT. Grade = Work put in. Tough but cool.
Great professor You will learn a lot if you put in the effort and ask him for help. Definitely recommend taking full advantage of office hours especially for research, he knows a lot and is willing to make sure you can do university level research.
I took this class online. The book was very interesting and well written. Although I enjoyed the material the teacher is a VERY tough essay grader and offers no extra-credit. Overall, I was less than a point from receiving an A in the class, but I ended up with a B. If not an English major and want an A I recommend seeking another teacher.
1 midterm. 1 final. 1 20+ page research paper. No quiz zes. I wouldn't recommend this class though; you'll end up with a W. He has 50% drop rate.
Had to drop and get a W in this class. It wasnt for me. Hes very interesting and can be funny, also gives extremely good feedback on your essay as youre working on it. However its just TOO HARD of a class. Way too much work. I would suggest not taking his class unless youre INTENT on being a PS major.
Granted his class may be challenging, but his lectures are interesting and he's a pretty cool guy. Make sure you study your study guides as his exams are based off of them. You learn a lot from his classes.
He's a really nice teacher. He has all the PPT and lectures online for you to print out or go over. He gets off topic sometimes but in a good way because his stories are always so funny and relevant to topic. The study sheets are very specific and direct. No trick questions. Two essays, an online test every week and two exams: midterm and final.
Professor Kil is a great professor who really knows his stuff. I am considering becoming a political science major just because of how interesting he made the class. Very clear with assignments but mostly independent work overall.
GREAT TEACHER. very helpful and clear in what he expects. One of the best professors I had at IVC. He really seemed to care about the students even though we weren't interacting in person. Always answered emails with very clear, detailed help/advice. Really enjoyed the class
Professor Kil's class is definitely not a walk in the park. He expects a lot from you because he believes in the potential of each person. He's an extremely caring professor and his office hours are always open. His lectures are often accompanied by life stories which are really entertaining. Very simple syllabus though.
Kil was amazing! Super interesting class. You MUST participate and show up to his office hours. As long as you do that and put in some study time, the class is a piece of cake! (Also, do an outline of the test essays and ask him to review them during office hours. That can make a letter-grade difference). Take him!!! Can't recommend the guy enough!
He is the best political science teacher you will find at a community college. That being said, be prepared to study and work for an A. He is the most unbiased teacher I have ever had, he will talk about a new perspective every week as if he believes it is his own.
Easily one of the worst professors i've ever had. He has good notes but goes on tangents half the time. His quizes are very vague and confusing because of how he words them. I turned in an essay a few minutes late and he took 30 points off! I told him that i walk to school and he rudely said "come earlier next time". Doesnt care about the students.
I took PS 12 this spring and received an A. The course was very well structured and organized. The lectures were interesting and easy to follow and Professor Kil's office hours were always open. If you keep up with the readings and study hard for the midterm and final, this class is really a fun class. I learned alot!
Show him that you care by communicating with him and going in frequently to office hours. He explains the tests pretty well and just start the research paper early and pace yourself. Didn't read most of the time and just studied the study guides days before the tests. Just two tests and a huge paper. Ended up getting a high B.
Off that bat, syllabus was intimidating alone. He makes you work for your grade, and prove yourself to care for the class by showing up on time & going to office hrs. Biggest struggle: huge research paper do your best on that assignment as it is a huge part of your grade. As for exams, he gives you a study guide a week before or so.. STUDY HARD
For the online class there is weekly online homework and a quiz due at the end of the week. Two essays and an in-class final. The essay prompts are easy to follow and the topics were relatively easy to write for. Occasionally we had to write a discussion thread that we had to complete before seeing what other classmates wrote. Fairly easy class
Professor Kil is really funny during lecture. He gets sidetracked so much. Content itself is not difficult. Gives study guides for both exams. The 20+ page paper is hell since he is pretty vague about what he wants. Grades all components of paper without rubric so you really have no idea what to expect. I genuinely dislike this guy, terrible!smhh
Don't Take Him at all. He is one of the worst professors that I have ever had in IVC. 1) He is rude. 2) He gives very bad grades on essays and discussion. 3) He doesn't answer the emails. 4) He isn't flexible at all and he thinks he is a professor in Harvard not in community college.
Pretty easy online class. Have to pay for an online government website to do homework. One assignment and one quiz each week. Then 2 essays. Mandatory on-campus final which was rather difficult, but as long as you do the work each week you should end with a good grade.
This is my advice to whoever wants to take his class: Don't take his class because he is one of the worst professors in IVC.
His class is unreasonably difficult. He makes all of his honor students write a 20 page research paper. You have to meet up with him 6 times outside of class to discuss this paper yet he never gave me good advice. He would usually just say things like "You need to dig deeper." He also takes off points for random things like using bullet points.
Very tough grader especially with essays. Does not give a clear grading rubric and his comments on your work are less than helpful. Does not have a lot of empathy when things come up in your personal life (like an emergency illness for which you have a Dr note for) and gives no extensions. I will never take a class with him again.
Take this class online! It is a breeze... Don't buy the second handbook for the class that the professor wrote either. Did not use it once and still passed the class easily. Save your $25
Weekly homework is reading one chapter from the textbook, completing one quiz, and doing an easy assignment on Connect. Also, he assigns two essays over certain chapters in the text. He is a tough grader so be prepared to read and write extra hard for these essays. There is a mandatory in class final. 50 MC questions and five short essay questions.
He is absolutely relentless when it comes to grading. Overall I felt that my essays had the requisite amount of words (exceeding min requirement) and substance, but I still received a mediocre grade in his class due to his merciless grading policy. He is the most ruthless grader I've ever seen in school. I passed with a C. 75%.
Worked so hard just to pass. McGraw hill was fine, his Final and papers are the hard. Spent days on papers to receive a B and C. The final was cumulative and the study guide was useless except for short essay portion. Treats this class as if its an honors upper division course. I am a 3.5 student w/ 90 units. Happy to be done! Nice guy and cares
Pretty standard online class. Makes you buy the e-book access, has 2 essays, and 1 in person final. The e-book homework assignments and quizzes are easy to get A's on. Unless you are good at writing essays, I wouldn't recommend taking this class as he grades them hard with no rubric. I got a B and A on the two essays. Final is easy if you study.
Great Professor! he won't hand you your grade, you have to earn it. He gives clear feedback if you ask and lectures are informative.
Tough but great teacher that will get you to research, study and think critically.
If Political Science is not your major then I would not suggest taking this class. He is very strict on attendance and will take off points if you miss more than one class. He has very specific things he wants in the essays/tests, but he doesn't explain them well. It's almost as if he doesn't understand this class is required for most students.
Warning, do not take this class, if you major is not relative to this course. He is absolutely relentless when it comes to grading, he designs your essays with cold water. The worst instructor I've ever had in my life. Global Study1
Did not like this professor at all. He was not very understanding and is very picky when it comes to writing essays. Very tough grader, really harsh. It feels like you can never meet his expectations for an essay. I felt as if I deserved a better grade for the essays. I would definitely not take a class with this professor. I wish I never did.
if you care about your grade and you are truly passionate about politcal science as your major then DO NOT TAKE HIM. this guy is absolutely useless. His major must be babysitter cause that is how he will act. he is disrespectful. marks points off your grade if you do not show up to class and he copy pastes his quizes from quizlet. he is lazy.
done on learn smart. He gives you minimum 2 assignments each week where you answer MC questions, they can be lengthy, 15 question quizzes which are also MC. There are 2 essays the first I got A and the second 55/100 because I only did half, still have an A. In class final, study guide is not that helpful so hoping for the best there, gives EC
His lectures follow a basic pattern and he uploads outlines online which really help organizes your notes. Kil is intense though, a weekly quiz based on the textbook, a midterm and a final, strict about attendance. But he gives really thorough study guides so study and you'll be fine. Also he really enjoys when students come to his office hours.
As others have said, he is a ridiculously difficult grader despite only providing vague directions at best. As a Poly Sci major, Im disappointed that he is the head of the department and that I will most likely have to take another class with him. The material is actually very interesting, but his grading is just ridiculous.
I took two honors classes with Kil before transferring to UCLA. I credit him for teaching me how to research and write at the college level. He was honestly one of the best professors I encountered in my entire undergrad education. If you want to learn to write, go to his office hours and put in some effort. He will prepare you for transferring.
Intelligent, intellectual, and funny. However, you must be interested in political science to love his lectures. Also, if you have any questions or concerns (transferring to universities, political questions, etc) he will be available in his office to answer your questions. He has helped many students getting into ivy league schools. I love this man
Asked us to write an essay on our opinion then said my opinion was too extreme and gave me a D. Grades very harshly.
Should have read the other ratings before signing up for this dude. I'm not very mentally stable, so going to class is hard. He made us write an essay (and i worked harder on it than any essay ever), but without a rubric, all he did was give me negative feedback and a low C. I'm very saddened by this professor's grading skills.
Prof. Kil is a sadistic grader who will not think twice about giving what should be an easy point assignment a D for making a single mistake. I entered the class thinking that the RMP reviews were from students who didn't try hard enough. I was wrong. You will quickly learn that you are not the exception. He acts as though this is your only class.
For an online class he is pretty good.
Online class is easy make sure you read and take the quiz at the end of every chapter. There is no midterm (at least when taking online). There are two essays and the information is taken from the text book. Final is easy if you study the guide (will provide 2 weeks before) multiple choice and 5 short essay answers. Will take again if I had too...
He is very supportive and pushes students to their highest potential. Admittedly, there were moments I was frustrated with the research paper but he pushes you in the right direction during office hours. He pushed me to do research conferences and to think about future career plans. He is not for those looking for easy A's. Favorite prof at IVC
Excellent professor. Really makes you work for it, but it's very satisfying to get good scores. Grade is basically directly proportional to office hour visits. Get to know him and he'll really help you out. Assignments are hard, but go to his office, discuss it ahead of time and you're fine. Research paper wasn't all that bad - office hours help.
I think students just want professors to pass them and if they don't they rate them bad. He is tough but that's because he is the department head for a reason. He knows his stuff, gives good examples. if you're in class you will learn the material. I was horribly sick spring semester 2019, and he understood while other professors just didn't care.
I already dropped his H class. This class is non H yet is harder than any H class I've ever taken (other than his. Relentless grader. Has premade criteria that he won't tell you that you must follow 100% to get an ok grade. Half the class is taught at office hours. Only ppl who like him religiously go to office hours. Worst prof EVER! Take Sahani!
Professor Kil isn't for everyone, but for political science majors I would definitely recommend him. Put the time in, take yourself seriously and you'll get a good grade.
This guy is an attendance Nazi and not a good instructor. he does not have a clear grading criteria and if your opinion contradicts his then prepare to fail. Careful if you're brown that d bag kept glaring at me for absolutely no reason and when I confronted him about it after class he just smirked and walked away.
Professor Kil's Honors classes require significant effort and commitment. One has to complete a 20-page research paper that consists of 28% of the final grade. He is a tough grader but his feedbacks are valuable. It is admirable of him to maintain a high academic bar while having to risk receiving low ratings. Take advantage of his office hours.
Grading is a mess in this class. The professor said he will take three weeks to grade the final exam, which is in 2020, right now it is 2019... Another thing is the essay grading. I did everything I needed but still got a low B because he added things i should have spoken about that were not on the prompt. Messy grader for sure, do not recommend.
I was terrified of Kil on the first day of the semester, but I put in the work by going to office hours and always staying ahead. So don't look at any of these bad ratings. Kil is 1 of my fav teachers of all time. He structures his classes so that when his students transfer, there isn't a huge jump in difficulty. His class is hard, not impossible.
Best teacher at IVC hands down. If you plan on transferring to a top university like Cal or UCLA and you are a poli sci major, you should be taking his honors classes. Best decision I ever made. His classes are one of the things that has made IVC worth it. While he's a tough grader, he provides you with everything you need to know.
Best teacher at IVC. While he may be a tough grader, he provides you with everything you will need for the tests. He is easily accessible outside of class and has made the transition to online learning a lot easier. Best teacher at IVC and if you're hesitant about taking his class, you won't regret it.
The class wasn't too bad but Professor Kil is unclear about his expectations on writing assignments/essays and a pretty tough grader. The quizzes are a tad difficult but passable. Overall, not a bad dude though.
Joon Kil is the worst professor I've had at IVC. I would avoid at all costs, This is the only withdrawal I've ever had. Joon Kil is a relentless grader, even if you study the textbook for his tests, he will find something to mark points off from lectures from his personal criteria for ridiculous reasons. Also gets very political and rambles.
The class was the usual work wise but his teaching methods are not the best. Got away with only using the textbook and evaded every lecture. Just read and study the textbook and youll be alright. Tough grader on the essays but if you put in the effort, then hell give you an above-average grade. Choose wisely.
If you put in the work , you'll get a good grade. The class was 8 weeks, asynchronus, and used the online textbook program to complete practice quizzes and assignments. There were 2 essays, 3 discussions, and a final exam. If you need a decent Gov class for credit I reccomend his 8 weeks course. He seems like a nice guy, and grades fairly.
Never have I maintained an A all semester only to take the final and be dropped to a C in any class. Not saying hes partial but I will say its odd to be marked down for conservative opinions. If you care about your grade and actually plan on trying to get a good grade, dont take this professor for the life of you.
Started out as a very easy-class but progressively got worse and worse. Will not change any dates or provide extensions especially when you need them. Final only had a single reminder which could not be taken another time and did not accommodate. Had a high grade the whole semester to be dropped to a D at the end for the final. Would not recommend.
Professor is Kil is the best! Yes, he is the hardest professor in the IVC, but you will really learn. He is teaching the actual class such as international relations, comparative politics, American government along with teaching how to do research, how to write a research paper. If you don't want work to work DON'T TAKE HIM! He is for hardworkers.
Hes ok as an online professor. You can get by this class without viewing the posted lectures and only using the textbook. The homework is probably the biggest pain in the class, but is manageable in the long run. Be warned though that the textbook is VERY long and is difficult to find answers for.
If you make any mistake, big or small, your grade will suffer. It is also quite hard to get into Professor Kils good graces, with him raising his voice over students since they asked a lot of questions. Another very important part of Prof. Kils class is that he will try his best to trick you, so make sure you read the fine print on everything.
I was a little scared to take his honors class at first but I am glad that I did because he offers helpful feedback. His lectures are long and the research paper is hard if you don't keep up with deadlines, but an A is attainable if you consider if feedback and follow his structure.
Note how all the honors kids are rating him very highly. To be fair he isn’t for everyone but he’s absolutely amazing if you are interested in academic research and if you want to continue in poli sci. If you show initiative he will meet you every step of the way and no one will prepare you better for University level research.
Hee is definitely very stern but he has clear expectations. I got pretty good grades on the papers and just made sure to do all the homework’s and readings. Not the most empathetic professor, but the class is doable. One thing is that he has a specific date and time for the final, and it can only be taken at that time. No exceptions.
Professor Kil can very tough when it comes to the final exam and essay! No open notes and there is a protocol. But his quizzes are very easy. I feel like Professor Kil graded the essay very fairly because he wants you to write how you really feel about the topic! not just writing to get the points or trying to be in the middle ground.
For an asynchronous class the task is pretty clear up until the final. Discussion posts seem to be graded equally regardless of opinion/political leaning and the mc is hit or miss. It is worth being self-sufficient, as surface level questions may or may not be answered sufficiently and his response may or may not have undertones of condescension
My class was in person he would mainly go over his lectures and current events. He usually never has time to finish his lecture so expects you to finish the notes on your own time. Also, he makes people participate for a participation grade. Overall his class can be a bit challenging and does require a bit of effort for a good grade.
Run away from his class I don't know how much he expects from his student. So hard to get A Never take his class again
A really tough teacher. If you love the subject you will like him. But other than that he is tough. Not an easy class. He is very qualified for what he talks but he talks a lot and with online work I did not like it. I would have appreciated in-person a lot more but too be fair his health is affected which is understandable.
2 Essays, 16 Quiz, 1 Final worth 300 points. He is an EXTREMELY tough grader and during his live zooms he will cut you off when you try to ask him something or speak in general. Proctored final. Be prepared to actually study and put the time in for your final and the essays where my class had an average of 42/100 on. Good luck!
It's not that I did not like the professor. The class is pretty straight forward and the class material is not too hard to understand. I didn't enjoy the frequent tests and quizzes or how the essay questions are structured. The biggest problem I had with the class was how boring it is.
This professor tricks you into thinking it will be smooth sailing. Then he gives you this big test to fail everybody. Oh my god, I never met a professor who is sick enough to trick all of his students. It is almost impossible to get good grades in this class!
homework was hefty when given but was fine since homework was pretty rare + it was all discussion posts. There's 1 extra credit at the end of the semester. Only 2 essays, though each test has an essay portion and there are only 2 tests. The final was chill bc he let us have a cheat sheet (1 full page, front and back). He posted all lectures too.
Professor Kil is the best professor I have had in IVC. I highly recommend his classes, especially his honors courses. I suggest you print out the given outlines for each lecture, take notes on them, and go to his office hours. Also, do the readings weekly and participate in his classes. He is a very knowledgeable and respectful person.
Honestly the class is fine except it's very boring and the tests and assignments take a lot of time. Prof Kil is very knowledgeable but is very boring and tone deaf. His lectures are long and barley skim over the test material. Essay prompts are vague, then he gives a harsh grade saying I didn't follow the prompt. The final is crazy hard.
Not good at having a straightforward Canvas, you have to dig around in the grades to find assignments. I missed an essay because of that. Other than that, super average and honestly preferred online course style.
I won't deny that this Professor is hard, but students who claim he does not care about you are simply blaming for their own problems. Prof Kil is the most caring professor I've ever seen. He's the most helpful professor I've ever met at IVC; his class will prepare you the most out of all classes at IVC, for upper division courses. Take him!!
This PS1 online class is given to you basically, you just must follow directions very clearly. If you get behind on reading and lectures, you will do poorly on the paper and the final exam. Professor Kil is very very clear in his directions so make sure you follow everything and you will easily succeed.
Very good but hotshot professor. Definitely needs to reduce the ego
As long as you watch the weekly lectures and read the textbook every week, you will be fine. Very few assignments, but he is a tough grader. He is very particular with what he likes so make sure to apply it when he gives you a correction and you will end with an A.
honestly the class was pretty easy there was only one test and one paper and the other assignments were from the textbook or were discussion boards. What he did grade was kinda harsh but as long as you follow the instructions to the letter its easy. you need to read the book and watch the lectures tho because everything is from both
The class content itself is not hard, you just need to make sure that the terms he put on your study guide is in your notes or the textbook since exams come from those 2 places. The course paper was very hard, I went to office hours every week but he gives you great feedback for your paper. Would recommend for those who want to challenge themselves
He's honestly funny. He cares about his students and wants them to succeed. His tests only require you to define terms from class and answer 1 FRQ (all on the study guides). You get a full cheatsheet front and back for the final. The research paper was the hardest part, don't procrastinate and go to his office hours early. He gets booked fast.
Really enjoyed this class and the professor. Productive lectures, easy grading (as long as you do your part). Would recommend to anyone needing credits, or interested in government. He grades a little strict, but he tells you everything you need to know before hand, so its valid.
Horrible professor. He is very well educated however he is not good at teaching at all. The format of the class is extremely difficult, he has extremely high expectation of the student without teaching them. He is also very disrespectful and he has favorites with his students.
Professor Kil has high standards from his students. Pro tip: For anything FRQ, he likes a mix of quantity and quality so be thorough. Be sure to read his directions and follow it to a tee! The class consists of Smartbook lessons/quizzes, 4 discussions, a Course Paper, and a proctored Final Exam. Overall, I enjoyed the class and format.
To be honest. His lectures were so boring and not in depth. He would mention things and not go into depth which was frustrating because the lectures at the end was just a overview of the readings and not explaining or going in depth about the reading or the topic. overall very confusing professor to take. tough grader too
As long as you follow all his instructions completely on discussions you should receive full credit! For course papers you HAVE to follow all instructions mindfully because he grades accurately, some may say it is "tough grading."His feedback for grading is pretty valid. Do the study guide(s) given and you should ace the test. I have 0 complaints.
Prof Kil has high standards, but staying on top of the readings and lectures will pay off. The assignments can be tough, but unstuck AI helped me prep efficiently. Overall, a rewarding class.
On skibidi, this professor was tuff. He be mad fanum taxing on grades. Even tho little work to do (one big essay two exams) he be fanum taxing on those , being very particular and mad geeked on grading. Very scary dude, just look at the name, he be mad fanum on lecture too but on god u can deaf out lecture and read the textbook. Grading crazy.
Hes honestly alright. His tests were worded so weird that it confuses you. If you have the option for a different professor, take the other professor bc kil is not that great.
His course consists of around 200 multiple-choice questions in weekly assignments and quizzes. The final is worth 30%, Course paper 20% of your grade. You need to give answers around what the course teaches rather than the truth, as he will ding you for this. Many questions have two right answers, but only one is correct. I would not take him.
THE MEANEST PROFESSOR I had a funeral all day, that same day was the final I was hving technical difficulties FOR 2 HOURS and I had video proof of all of it when I finally got it fixed it was 10 minutes till my exam and I couldn't take it. So he made me take it with a 60 point deduction!!! For something I could not control!
I took him 3 times—14H Sp23, 12H F23, 1H F24. Things might've changed since I had him, but I recommend him bc he DOES prepare you for academia after CC. He cares about your progress and wants you to succeed; my research papers significantly improved each time I took him, and he acknowledged my growth. Tough grader, but just communicate during OH
Would never recommend. He could care less about you. All I can say is terrible.
Professor kil was very clear about course expectations, which made it easy to stay on track. He provided detailed feedback that genuinely helped me improve academically. There was midterm, final, one essay assignment, and quizzes after each chapter. If you're genuinely interested in the subject and stay on top of the work, you'll do fine.
This course is dry, with strict grading and a heavy reading load. Quizzes and discussions account for 50% of the grade, papers account for 20% (I have never seen a perfect score), and the final exam accounts for 30% (half of which comes from writing questions). Translation tools are prohibited, which is quite challenging for beginners in English.
prof is chill and available for help. very strict grader, reread rubric a lot. strict late policy, no extra credit. don't think he smiles. this class had a $84 class code required :(. a lot of grade based on manual work, one paper which was pretty easy, test was incredibly easy just do the reading and skim the lecture outlines to succeed.
literally horrible. decides on a few favorite students and glaze them the whole semester. makes you feel dumb when you try to participate. horrible do not take him
Honestly not a bad class covers a lot of modern topics as well, so it's somewhat interesting to learn about. Do your best on the course paper as well as the final exam combined, they are worth 50% of your grade but for the course paper he grades off a strict rubric. Offers 2% increase with extra credit. You can get an A if you just do the work.
The professor is not accommodating, not even for mental health purposes. His lectures were super long and not helpful in the process of studying for the final exam. He gives out 2-3 quizzes per/week (assigns homework on holidays). In his lectures, he just reads off bullet points without explaining. Gives vague and unclear instructions.
