Jordan's course was so much fun! He brings in a to of great guest speakers that relate so much to the course. Would love to take him again!
He is a wonderful speaker, super comfortable in front of the class. The readings are minimal, and there is little to no outside work. Extremely career oriented, gives a clear understanding of what it is like to be a planner. An easy class.
This class takes you through the history of planning and how it came to be and also includes application and reflection of what you have learned.
Doesn't enjoy usual "death by powerpoint" lecture structure. Mixes things up. Great stories.
He's a laid back professor who takes student input very seriously. He basically designed the course around the input that we gave him. His lectures are clear and easy to understand, there is very little homework, and he brings in a lot of guest speakers to relate the course content to the real world. I would highly recommend him.
This course covers basics. Material is not in depth, easy to comprehend. James moves at a decent pace with surface level information. Book readings are on the syllabus. However, lecture discusses more in depth what is in the reading. Reading was not required for me to pass the class. Gave us the option to choose our final.
Jordan James is a fantastic professor with a lot of energy. He is approachable and explains things in terms that can be understood by any student regardless of their past experience or background. He can be reached easily in and out of class, and is willing to help with issues from his own class, other courses, and personal life.
A very unique personality and approach from Prof James helped make the course fun and informative. The grading and assignment structure really led to a balanced work load, with high knowledge retention.
Jordan is a great professor! Hes very personable and open. He knows what hes talking about! Classes usually included some lecture and then an activity to solidify concepts. A short writing assignment was assigned every couple of weeks and tests arent scary! Would definitely recommend.
If you need this class, or need some filler credits, this class with Jordan is perfect. The material covered is useful in just about any field and Jordan has an awesome varied teaching style. Never gets boring.
His lectures are very engaging, creative, and informative. He uses the book as a back-base for the lectures. He brings outside presenters into the class, which helped get others perspective's on planning. Really nice guy. He also lets the class decide how we wanted to go with our final. (ex: test, paper, presentation) and we took a vote.
Jordan has a wonderful, unique way of projecting intense, detailed information clearly and in an unbiased way. In the beginning of the course he dove into exercises to help us learn about ourselves in interesting "fast" paced activity. this led to reaffirmation within my own self helping grow confidence to take on the material for the course.
Overall, Jordan brings a very unique teaching strategy that I've only really seen one other time in my school experience. He regards students as colleagues, not as underlings. He brings a really interesting blend of cultural and professional perspective into the classroom, which enriches the class significantly. I really enjoyed taking his class.
This class was great and very refreshingly multimodal and engaging. He uses lecture, discussion, guest speakers, reading, videos, group work and individual assignments.
Well organized and clear material. Very professional and caring professor. Would definitely take again.
Jordan may be known in future years as one of the best professors to teach at UNM or whichever university he teaches at after completing his PHD in learning sciences. I find that many university professors care more about their research than about teaching itself. Teaching is a vocation, something best done for the passion Jordan exemplifies.
CRP-165 with Professor James was a great experience. I came into the department knowing nothing about community and regional planning. However, with the help of Professor James that changed. Classes are fun and interactive and consist mainly of discussions and group activity.
The instractor is so good. His lecture is really clearly and he is so kind.
Course activities were engaging, thoughtful, creative and fun. The textbook chosen was reader friendly. Content provided in lectures was of great value and informative. Plays music while students work on projects. Best introduction course I've taken.
just an awesome professor and maybe even a great future mentor when it comes to our field of study. great person to talk to when your down. he will meet you outside of class with a cup of coffee and you can chat about what ever. overall 20/10 rating. amazing!
It was interesting how we used class projects that led up to the final. I think it is important to have lessons in class that reflect what will be on tests. Overall the engagement is good.
He was very knowledgeable about the topics and allows you to explore your own interests. Very good dynamic and activities to understand the concepts
Jordan is an amazing professor. His class is easy because you actually learn, making it easy to apply yourself to any assignments. His lectures are engaging and interesting, which is rare. He truly cares about his students and is willing to meet outside of office hours. He is a great person with an incredible personality. I admire his passion.
Professor James teaches class in a way that helps us actually learn and not just memorize things. He structures the class in a way that reduces stress on students and emphasizes big picture thinking and putting our knowledge into practice.
He will work with you if you are having problems. However, this is a really easy class just as long as you do the work.
This Class was very informative and I felt like I Learned a lot about planning with minimal outside stress.
I took CRP165 with Dr. James in fall 2018. There were many interesting guest speakers, interesting lectures and activities throughout the course which made it interesting and easy to engage with. You should expect to show up to the class ready to participate in group activities. I'm looking forward to taking more classes from him in the future.
Awesome class activities and guest speakers. Group Projects work well with the information throughout the class. Unique!
Great instructor ! Learned a lot and great lectures and peer activities.
Jordan's class is very straight-forward. If you show up, you will pass. It's all about motivation in this class. Jordan doesn't grade hard. just make sure to turn in your work the day it's due. There are only 6 discussion post ( and peer review) and a midterm and final (usual small and easy)
Great class! Students get to decide their final.
Jordan's teaching style, knowledge of the field, and general respect for his students make spending time in his class enjoyable, plus you'll learn a lot. Definitely recommend!
Really good at giving helpful feedback, really fun group projects, engaging lectures
Jordan is very articulate and gives great lectures. He is very approachable and his overall knowledge in this field of study gives the opportunity to receive great feedback and advice from him.
Great professor. Cool guy. Really engaging lectures.
Great class overall, I feel like I got tons of crucial information during the entirety of the course.
Very open and great at not creating controversy which unfortunately happens a lot at colleges. Overall, really grear and no issues whatsoever.
Really rad guy. Hes very personable and approachable. Always a clear lecture, I never left these lectures confused. Hes a really genuine guy and I really enjoyed his teaching style. He teaches other CRP courses as well if you are interested in having a class with him again.
Lots of interesting ideas he introduces to you
Jordan was really engaging in his lectures. He is also very approachable for anything regarding the class. The structure of his class is untraditional, meaning there aren't any exams, however, I still learned quite a bit through his method of instruction.
Really good lecturer. Some info was a bit out there but overall enjoyable class.
Allows group work and lectures are loud and clear
I've taken two classes with Jordan and he's awesome. Super engaging lectures, connects ideas in unique ways that really make you think. Textbook isn't super necessary - you get all the information you need from the lectures. All grades are based on personal reflections ie what in class strikes you the most and how does it connect to your own life?
Jordan is a great professor. He introduces real life problems in the class. It's an easy A if you do the discussion board and reflection. His homeworks are mostly discussion based or presenting your opinions, so it shouldn't be that difficult. And mostly he is friendly. He will understand your problems if you share it to him.
You will have a lecture every day, however, there will be fun activities after class. This class also gives you design experience and hands-on experience with city planning.
The best thing about this class was that he let us choose both our midterm and our final instead of assigning us a generic essay like most professors do.
I did read from the book for this class because I had bought it already but the reading is not required. The lectures are well-planned and informative. This is a great class for introduction to community planning and I think you should take it. An easy A if you can submit weekly online assignmnets.
I chose this class based on his ratings on this website and wasn't disappointed. As an upper level student, it was a seemingly elementry course but I was so grateful to have it break up my work load. He is rad. Relatable, down to earth, cares about his students, and has been in our very shoes. Take him friends :)
Prof Jordan is a good guy, great lectures, not a difficult class. A decent amount of writing is required but, its all non-academic so it won't kill you.
If you go to class and do the assignments his courses are enjoyable experience that you will actually learn from.
Professor James was great. He was really engaging and made the class easy to pass while still helping students to learn a lot. 10/10 would recommend.
Jordan is one of the most special and thorough teachers I have ever had, when it comes to teaching style and his encouragement of discussion based discovery.
Love this class! this the best urban planning class I even take in the school of UNM.
Wants everyone to succeed in course. Would take again.
Jordan James was a fantastic intro level professor to Community and Regional Plannning. Despite coming from different walks of life, myself and other students were able to engage with cirriculum. No one felt embarrassed to speak up and answer questions; a rare enviornment to experience even at University level. Great 100 course if you get a chance.
Great professor. You can tell he doesn't follow the norms of what an educator is. He listens and lets the class decide what we will do. Has lectures but doesn't rely on tests and quizzes. He uses real world activities to teach. Gives great feedback and very accessible. Would definitely recommend to other students and hope to have him again.
He's a really good guy. He's clearly very intelligent yet has no ego about it. He genuinely cares about the class and is very passionate about teaching. He adjusts to your issues making it easier for you to get things done. Very relaxed demeanor. Attendance isn't mandatory but his lectures are actually great.
Jordan usually has PowerPoints ready to go every morning and often he'll have an activity that is related to the content after the presentations. He encourages collaborative work. He is very good at getting his point across. He cares more that you actually learn something rather than memorizing nonsense. Jordan is also very approachable professor.
Dr. James was a great teacher. Is teaching style is very non-conventional and he applies his lectures to the real world which makes it very educational. Lots of in class activities which were thoughtfully put together. And there is also lots of group work. Over all fun and unique class!
Great professor, course is very straight forward regarding assignments and deadlines. Lectures are interesting and I feel like I learned a lot of practical information that I will apply to my future career. Easy to get an A as long as you show up to lectures and do the assignments.
Dr. James is a great professor. His lectures were solid. Although attendance is not mandatory, i would recommend showing up to class because his lectures were entertaining, educational, and crucial for the papers. There are multiple short papers throughout the semester, but they are mostly reflections so you will learn a lot from writing them.
It was my second course with Dr. J and I wish I could take a third. He allows the freedom for his students to learn about topics related to his class but that are of interest to you. This allows for a much more effective project-based learning and obtainment of your research. Doo eeet. Don't think twice, register for his class, it will fill up.
I enjoyed Jordan's Graduate Teaching course. His approach allows you to identify the unique challenges that you face as a TA. His assignments aren't overbearing and invite you to foster your own identity of how you want to educate students. He is very well spoken, chill, and easily accessible outside of class if you need to bounce ideas off of him.
Great class and teacher, I look forward to taking courses from Dr. J.
Dr. J is a very helpful professor. He tailors his lectures and projects for everyone. By that I mean he is concerned with the way students learn. He is a very hard worker and responds to emails very quickly. He is very forgiving but expects you to do your part.
He is so awesome! Makes all of the lectures super engaging
Professor J is an amazing lecturer, who knows how to synthesize course material in an interesting and engaging way. He presents concepts of thought that really make you question the world around you in a new way. Supper clear expectations, always responds to emails, midterm and final are tailored in creative ways, and uploads lectures to YouTube.
Jordan is a very engaged instructor and you can tell he puts a lot of effort into this course. Even though it is a 100 level class, I learned a lot while not getting overloaded with work. Got detailed feedback on every single assignment and he doesn't dock points for silly things. I am taking him next semester too. 11/10 recommend!
He is very understanding of people's situations. Just communicate with him and he will work with you. He makes you think outside the box and lets you pick topics you are passionate about for projects. Starts working towards projects at the beginning of the semester for homework so you don't need to stress towards the end.
This professor is amazing. Kind, unique, respectful, and young. You will want to go to his class.
given the strange circumstances of this semester due to covid it is hard to fully determine how I feel. I would say he seems to care about teaching and his lectures are much easier to listen to than many other Professors.
Very warm welcoming and outgoing. He makes his lessons interesting by allowing us to apply our knowledge in group activities. Even with COVID, he kept class in person which was nice because he kept the vibe of normalcy as best as he could.
Professor James is one of the best professors I've had at UNM. I always looked forward to his class and his slide presentation.
I loved this class, Jordan James is one of my favorite professors, his classes are fun and intriguing. You are going to learn a lot and get a lot out of it. Great teaching style, would definitely take this class again.
I really enjoyed this class this semester. It was relevant to my real life and he planned it SO well. I really admired how he structured the class and organized his lectures; its genuinely amazing. He is also really flexible to meet outside of class, and is good at responding. I cant recommend him enough
Awesome and easy class. Very knowledgeable and makes a comfortable environment to speak about issues of the world without feeling like you're wrong. You're individual experience of the word through your own eyes matters and your opinion and thoughts matter.
Very understanding if you talk to him. Professor James is very knowledgeable and his lecture are super interactive and current.
He is an amazing lecturer. You can tell he's done a lot of lectures. He also invites guest speakers which is very helpful so you can see various perspectives in the planning field. I highly recommend you take this class!
Very very chill professor, but also an expert in his field with a lot of valuable insight and knowledge to provide. Would recommend if you are a planning student!
Hey was a really good lecturer, and always made class engaging. There were typically 1-2 assignments a week, so as long as you stay on top of it, his class is pretty easy to pass. I totally recommend this class, even for an elective because it is interesting throughout the entire semester.
Very understanding professor, cares for his students and the well being of them over stressing them about work. Is very willing to help his students out as best as he can.
Good professor and very knowledgable about planning in general. Easy class but can be overwhelming when you're taking other ones on top of this one.
Don't sleep on this professor. If you are at all interested in planning or maybe just need a course to figure out what you want to do, take these classes! These courses really get you thinking about our world and how you can express yourself within it. Just overall a great professor and not very difficult to get a good grade. Just show up.
Professor O' James was a great entry point for me as a freshman. This was my first planning class and my interest was piqued solely because of the interactive lecture style. The material was conveyed in a way that is very easy to understand, and I loved the idea of personalizing your assignments based on what your interests were.
Jordan is a great professor. He taught the topics very well and the assignments coincided with the lecture material smoothly as well
Professor Jordan James is an excellent educator. He conveys the class in a clear way. His feedback and material for the class are very understandable and easygoing. The material was highly educational. Really enjoyed the class.
This course is one of the first courses I have taken in college that taught information that is applicable to modern society. It is not like sitting in a math class or history class that teaches you information that you retain and forget the next day. The professor is engaging, helpful, and understanding of his students and helps guide you.
His 165 class is very engaging, it is a little lecture heavy but the lectures are interesting and there are some really cool activities mixed in. There are quite a few small assignments throughout the course so beware. He also brings in planning related guests so if you are considering going into planning this class presents a lot of options
Prof Jordan James makes sure to include real-world into his lectures making it so much easier to understand the lecture material. His class is well designed and it is easy to keep up with the assignments.
Jordan James is by far the best professor I have had in college so far. His classes are designed to work with students. He does this by allowing students to design their finals as well as using past assignments to work up to bigger assignments. He is very clear with his expectations. I have enjoyed taking his classes.
He is truly a great professor that actually cares about his craft.
This course and this professor were very good. The class was easy overall, but it was always interesting and informative. He managed to touch on many different subjects without any feeling incomplete. The class offers a lot of freedom, and he often asks students what specifically they would like to learn about and students design their own final.
Very good lectures and easy to follow. However, the class was too easy. Wish there was more done to challenge us.
I highly recommend Jordan! You can tell he knows his stuff and because of this he is a very good lecturer. He actively seeks feedback and he applies this feedback to the course to make it better.
Jordan is a really cool guy, he keeps classes fun and interesting and brings in guest lectures to talk about their experience in the planning field which helps get you excited about a career in planning I highly recommend taking him.
Jordan is an excellent professor and does well at connecting ideas and themes from lectures into his assingments.
By far the easiest class I have taken. Not only was it easy but I did learn a lot from it. More than my other classes. Jordan is very clear on his work and what he expects from assignments. If you have the opportunity to take ANY of his classes do it.
Prof James does a great job with his lectures and the way he relates the information to modern and current society makes the teachings very easy to understand. His grading criteria is very clear, and it is easy to keep track of his assignments because of the way he has structured the course. Take his class to learn new and exciting topics.
Amazing teacher and great teaching styles
Jordan is a personable professor. His classes aren't that challenging and you can tell that he has sympathy for students. He tries really hard to engage with the class and makes lectures about student's experience.
I really liked the structure of the class. I think it was very helpful with the examples and presentations. The objectives of the curse were clear and highly educational. He was very respectful of the time, which I really appreciate.
Great professor, cares for students and has interesting lectures.
This course gives you an insight to the elements of planning and the different areas that planning has. This course is very design heavy but drawing is not the primary focus. If you want to learn how planning is used throughout society this course is a must. The professor gives great lectures that are engaging and relative to the real world.
He is super chill and willing to make time for you. Assignments are easy and you'll get a 100 if you meet all the criteria and turn it in on time.
This is a good professor, I liked his class. He does take half off for late work, which is a frustratingly large amount, but if you get the work in he is an easy grader. You should be guaranteed and A if you try.
He is engaging, smart, and makes complex materials understandable and relatable. Highly recommend!!
This Professor is relaxed and is easy to talk to and get help from. He made the class fun and therefore I was able to learn really well. This specific class had a lot of drawing and planning papers which is fun because you can express your ideas physically and with colors!
he is an amazing teacher. lets you show who you are on homework and in class.
Best professor of all time. All of his courses are super fun and informative. Thank you professor!
Professor Jordan is hands down my recommendation if you are interested planning. He care tremendously about retention and the success of his students. I have learned an ample amount about sustainability and planning in just one short semester. You will not regret taking a class with him.
Extremely clear rubrics for assignments that make succeeding and getting 100%s easy to achieve. Dr. James is kind and knowledgeable about content and current situations in the community. Readings for this class were provided through Canvas - did not have to purchase a textbook for this class. Attendance not mandatory but you will love going.
Decent lessons overall. He is pretty easy going however, he does make bold claims occasionally when grading. Took half of the points on my final project, and claimed that my final project proposal was self-plagiarism as I had used the same statement as my mid-term project proposal. Be wary of his ego.
imo one of the best professor's in UNM's planning department! i'm jealous of the undergrads that get to take multiple classes with him :c you'll learn alot! assignments aren't hard (per say) but they're thought provoking and so you do have to try! james is super knowledgeable and genuinely a cool guy! definitely take one of his classes if you can!
This was a great class with a great professor. There is a project at the end of the course but the professor does an amazing job at making sure that you are prepared and help you along the way.
I would like you guys to pay attention to things you don't like so you can change it
Assignments are mostly feedback based
He is lenient, but coursework will pile up if you let it.
Interesting class, great material. Homework is consistent, but not hard. Great professor, cares lots about his students and our thoughts on the class.
Very flexible and gives you the power to control the class.
Students are consulted for the topics discussed in class and the setup of the assignments and he takes your feedback seriously.
Professor James in CRP 181 gives lots of small homework assignments but is patient with late work and incredibly engaging in lecture.
This professor is open on his grading criteria meaning he is not that strict. He gives very clear instructions and examples of his expectations of assignments and makes them fun at times too. He is very open to student feedback and is willing to alter the class just for his students and future students.
He's great with actually helping us understand the content. An easy class that gets us thinking without being too difficult to not wanna come in. I actually look forward to all his classes.
He is willing to work with you if you put in the effort
Great professor lectures are interesting class is engaging with the lectures. Gives great feedback and every lecturer has to do with the assignment we have .
This is the second class I've taken with James and I don't regret it at all. The class is really easy and the content is interesting. The only downside is that the assignments are weekly and they start to feel redundant over time. Besides that, he's still a great professor.
Professor James is really great. I took his Social Issues in Urban & Regional Development class this semester. Definitely do the homework and go to class (or email him if you can't) he takes surprise attendance and if you aren't present, you lose extra credit points. This class was a great intro to planning, definitely take it if you're interested!
Jordan was a great instructor who tried to encourage open discussion from students throughout the entire class. Assignments were refreshing in a way I haven't received from a class before. All assignments are open ended with structure, and you can often fulfill assignments however you'd like so long as it's somewhat related to course material.
Great professor who genuinely loves what they do! Class is structured in a way to encourage participation and feedback.
Professor James is great and overall I did enjoy taking his class, lectures were fairly enjoyable, however please note that any late work will automatically be reduced 50%, but If you keep up on assignments you should be totally fine ! I would definitely take one of his classes again.
One big thing about this course is that you are able to suggest what you want to learn about during the semester. There are multiple instances where he is open to suggestions as most of the content and classwork was created because of previous students. He is open to taking feedback and becoming better.
There was a handful of weekly assignments, however, they were never too hard. Always engaged students and the assignments built up to help us with the final project to present what we've learned over the course. Professor is always ready to help and is clear In instruction.
This professor is awesome, actually enjoyed this guy's class.
I enjoyed the class. I had trouble keeping up for personal reasons, but the class was good.
I took CRP536. Easy grades. Understands students. Doesn't always give the most support or feedback but it's a breath of fresh air compared to other professors. Cares about adapting to the needs of the class.
This professor is great - very engaging and open to student feedback. The workload is manageable, and tools like Unstuck AI really help with study prep. Definitely worth taking this class.
Great Job!
Teacher is excellent in their ability to teach complex topics while also remaining down to earth and easy to talk to. They helped me a number of times including answering text messages outside of class hours. They are sometimes slow to grade, but grading feels balanced on the amount of work you put into it.
Jordan O. James and his Visualization Tools for Planners course have been great at not only learning new digital visual skills but also building on our knowledge. He ties the lecture topics to planning (your career) as well as life.
Professor Jordan James was a good instructor who delivered clear lectures and provided helpful feedback that supported my success. The course included a fair amount of homework, and we were expected to complete assignments each week, which helped reinforce the material.
He is really a good and helpful professor. He teaches everything from scratch and helps you to understand throughout the process. His assignments are interesting and motivating to do. He really cares about the student. Hope i get every professor like him.
