Our first exam average was terrible. The test is worth half of your final grade. This course requires lockdown browser and webcam. If something goes wrong with a connection she will give you a zero on the exam. She has no useful guidance on how to prepare for this exam. She is very arrogant and evil. If you care about your grade STAY AWAY!!
Dr. Lyerly is awesome! Yes, she is strict. Yes, she assigns a TON of homework but RMII is a writing intensive course for the Psych department so what do you expect? Great professor and really cares about us. You can tell she loves what she does. Def the professor to take if you love psychology.
The test makes up the majority of your grade 58 percent. The test is extremely difficult. I would stay away from this professor. I think it's an ego trip because failing students does not seem productive for her job or for the university. The comments about her being a good instructor are fake and you will see for yourself if you take her course.
She is a good professor, her lectures are interesting. This was a hybrid class so the tests were online with webcam. Tests were hard, you need to read the textbook to do good on the tests. Lots of assignments per week but super easy and didn't take long.
Professor Lyerly is fine. The work load is definitely manageable. You'll have to work for an A but it's more than doable. I'd take again.
This class is not an easy A. If you want a decent grade you'll have to put in the effort. With that being said, there are 3 exams (one being the final) 2 have essay portions and there are weekly quizzes and packback posts. READ the textbook and review the powerpoint slides and you should be good to go!
hybrid half online half in person class, for a general ed course she really makes you do the most for no reason. We had to buy 4 separate things for this class like an access code, a video monitor on our computer for exams, and other things. she watches u virtually take the exam and the questions on it are some she never goes over. don't take her
Be prepared to read a lot and if you do the online portion, you have to attend the face to face lecture since you will be graded for attendance using poll everywhere. You have to do the modules and pack back every week to get graded.
I took this class online, so I never actually met her. I have never taken such an impossible course in my life. I fell behind very early and I studied constantly and still failed and scored low on the tests with no real help from her or TA's. Whats most disappointing is that I was so excited for this class but this made me want to cry.
Hybrid class. Reading from textbook and assignment taught more than lectures did. Would recommend doing the reading before hand because the poll everywhere questions tend to be about the material you are GOING to learn, not what you HAVE learned. Just be respectful and she's got not issues with you
This class is probably the hardest class I have taken but Dr. Lyerly was very nice. She always responded to my emails pretty quickly.
Horrible class. Horrible prof. Tests are basically impossible and yes you do have to use Respondus Lockdown Browser. Cried my way through the whole semester. I always get straight As and the only way for me to get an A in the class is if the class does her class evaluation and we get extra credit. Good luck kids! But if you can, TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!!
She is the WORST. Seriously don't take this class. She uses lockdown browser for everything and is so strict and doesn't take mental illness into accountability. You're struggling with COVID? Too bad she won't care. The coursework was not hard, but if youre reading this Dr. Lyerly, I hope no student takes you. They'd be lucky. STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had to take this class for my major, and it was pretty difficult. I found that it didn't matter how much I would study, the tests would still throw me off. However, if you do all the other assignments you can still manage a B in the class even if you do bad on the exams.
Dr. Lyerly was nice at first, but some of her lectures weren't very helpful.
Brain and behavior is a hard class, especially if you have no background in biology. I think Dr. Lyerly provided many resources for the class, but in the online format, you have to be very self-motivated to get an A. Lockdown browser used for all exams, make sure to take the practice quizzes a billion times, and answer the questions in the book.
Dr. Lyerly was an okay teacher. Her first test was good for the most part but after that it all went downhill. Practice quizzes and study guide do not help at all after the first test which sucks bc you really dont know what you have to study for. Definitely read the book, hella long but READ IT, only way youll do good on her tests!
Professor Lyerly as a person is great but as an asynchronous class teacher, very hard. No matter how much preparation you do for the exams, making above an 80 is near impossible. Really have no idea where most of the information on the exams comes from. Get ready to read a ton in the textbook and spend many many hours on lectures.
Probably the hardest class I have taken so far. The tests are impossible to get an A on. No matter how hard I studied I was still left struggling on every exam. Definitely do not recommend. Her lectures are hard to sit through because they are so monotoned and she does not seem interested in the material plus they do not help with the exams.
2104 is a writing course, so be ready to write! Dr. Lyerly is very good at giving feedback and she is very clear about what she wants in the assignments, as long as you are following the rubric you won't have a problem. I also liked that even though it is an online course, she genuinely tries to connect with her students and the class is enjoyable.
Without a doubt I have never seen a more awful teacher. This class should not be taken online or taught at all for that matter. She gives zeros to people that dont deserve it do not take this class save your money bruh
I do not know if it is because this class was online or me, but I would not want to take her again. I would have chosen a different professor, and I should have looked at the ratings before signing up for this class.
U will have to work ur butt off to pass this class, not even joking. Right now I'm spending most of my summer days reading the textbook for this class because it's the only helpful thing. Tests require respondus, the lectures are not helpful and monotone, so ur better off reading. U can drop the lowest test grade, but honestly don't even take this.
DO NOT take her for this course if you want a grade better than a C. This was the hardest course i've ever taken. Had nothing to do with having to use respondus browser, almost all of the study material she provides are not what is on the actual exams. Ridiculously hard, take a different professor if you can.
This class is hard, but not because of Dr. Lyerly. You have to study to understand the material. Make sure you read your textbook, take notes, watch her lectures, and take the practice quizzes. There were four exams, and she dropped your lowest one. There was also an opportunity for extra credit. I really did love this class and learned a lot.
The worst professor I have ever had. Regardless if you were cheating or not, if she feels you did not follow her ridiculous "guidelines" you will be given a 0 on your exams. That alone tells me there is barely any trust in student abilities and it was so frustrating when honest students get grades that do not show their hard work. Do not take her!
She will help you but this class is so hard. Reading the textbook is a must if you want to do well in this course just so you know. Very test and homework heavy and the tests are very hard.
I would never recommend Dr. Lyerly to my worst enemy. She expects you to read about three hours of material that is never discussed later. Do not take this class for an easy gen ed class because it is anything but that.
AWFUL!! I don't know if brain and behavior is just the world's hardest class or she's just a bad professor. She does not teach at all and it relies heavily on tests. You could do every single assignment but if you do bad on the tests then you're going to do bad in the class. There's study sessions before each exam with the TAs, but it doesn't help.
She is awful and does not care about her students. She is quite literally the worst educator I have ever had the displeasure of being a student of. She made me want to drop out. She does not even teach either. A lot of reading and the exams are not a good reflection of people's understanding of the subject.
Please do not take this class.Uses lockdown browser got flagged for eye movement, got a 0 for an exam. I read all these reviews and this was my only choice to take this class, if you are just taking this for credit, find something else ( Dr. Peach is amazing highly recommend her ). Lyerly lectures are extremely boring and not very interactive.
Do not take this for an easy gen ed course, the opposite. It's like she wants everyone to fail with her very boring and painful lectures that are not useful at all. All that reading and studying textbooks don't help. Attendance is mandatory using. (hybrid course). No one should take this class with her pls find a better teacher who cares about you.
Her lectures were pretty boring, she never really explained things, just sort of read the slides. Most of the quizzes were frustrating because they didn't contain many questions about what we were supposed to read. So it was like we read these 40+ page long chapters each week only to be tested on minute details that were barely mentioned.
shes okay. super strict about tests, and would give u zero if you violate her rules. (online respondus) i really enjoyed the learning part. Lecture is basically the same thing as the text book. I would take her again, just not my first choice, mid.
When I plug in my charger into a wall outlet am depressed when I am not shocked to death.
Oh man.. you HAVE to study VERY hard in this class. Make sure you study every little detail because it will come up as a question! Even if you think it wont it definitely will. You must be able to take amazing notes as well. Definitely do not recommend. If shes the only professor with open seats just wait til next semester for a different one.
Brain & Behavior was the only psych class I have ever hated. Said to be a "time commitment" but cuts into time for other classes. Passionless lectures, TONS of reading, tedious homework & Packbacks add up to a part-time job. Exams are on tiny details across chapters worth of tiny details. I changed my major instead of having to do this class again.
This class's workload is equivalent to a part time job. I have a 4.0 and an associates degree under my belt, so it's not like I'm not used to putting in work...however, this course is borderline impossible to succeed in if you have any other classes, a family, a job, or interests outside of watching her monotone lectures.
Please please PLEASE do not take her class
Tests were just difficult and not too much on what we learn in class. Also hard to keep track because the curriculum has a ton of information crammed in
She's completely irrational when it comes to exams. She has failed more people on them than passed them for reasons that students cannot control. She was very rude and does not care about her students. She fails as many as she can. DO NOT TAKE HER. Completely unprofessional and should not be a professor at all.
Your entire grade is based on the exams. The homework assigned was so textbook heavy, at least 120 pages weekly. They had mini quizzes that barely mattered, but every exam was curved because no student could score above a 60. Her extra credit assignment isn't clear and she gives no other opportunities for extra points.
Tough grader. Everyone but 2 or 3 people in the class got a C or higher grade. No one got an A.
This class requires a lot of reading every week. Psychology is not my major, however, a lot of the material has to do with anatomy and things like that. Be prepared to take lots of notes and pay attention to little details in the book. Do not fall behind in studying. She has an extra credit opportunity.
not a class to take if you dont like reading a lot (i dont.) this is not a class where you can skim the material or take light notes. some of the questions on exams are so obscure. just take clear notes.
I would not recommend taking her at all unless you are willing to ruin your mental health. The amount of reading you need to do from the textbook is insane. Exams are the biggest part of the grade. The notes we take in the lecture barely even help and she basically just reads off the slides and even the littlest thing in the textbook matters.
Material is difficult. Prof and TAs don't care if you learn it. No help at all. Classmates were better support. Tests were 3-4 chapters each. Questions were on minute details, so if you have a photographic memory - you're in luck. I wish I could avoid her but psyc profs at UNCC are hard to come by apparently and I'll have to suffer again.
Class is an information overload. The exams have the tiniest details that are not part of broad important topics of each chapter. the lectures do not go in depth at all so they aren't of much help. her cheating policy is unfair. no review sessions for exams. cumulative final.
She is very nice and i did well in her class, but it was very hard. PAY ATTENTION DURING LECTURES AND READINGS! READ EVERY DETAIL! She expects you to know every detail of the textbook and the study guides honestly have not helped much. I would make your own study guides for her class. Try to take another professor if possible.
Expects you to read upwards of six chapters of the textbook a week, each of which could take upwards of an hour to read. The homework is easy but only makes up for 60% of your grade while the exams focus on the tiniest details of the textbook and random metaphors of the lectures rather than the broader topics.
If you care about your GPA, you should either NOT choose this professor OR you must be ready to read for hours on end, just to be tested on the smallest details in the textbook. I honestly couldn't even study for these exams due to the absolute UNPREPARATION for the questions. Rules for the exams are ridiculous, so if your wifi goes out, 0 for you.
She is nice but incredibly strict. Attendance is mandatory and the tests are very specific and difficult. A lot of reading.
don't take this class
dont take it
Talks to much, doesn't help her students, wants you to fail
The first thing she said on the first day of class is that we needed to study 9 hours a week if we wanted to pass her class. Shes not a good teacher the test are super specific, and the lectures are just general information. So if you don't read the textbooks your screwed for the test. Shes not a good professor.
She is very hard to reach, and very strict. Very hard course with a lotttt of reading. She is also very strict with test policies and will not hesitate to give you a 0.
This prof should not teach a mandatory class for psych majors. Class is exam heavy. There are 4 exams + an optional final. While she does drop the lowest exam grade, the testing policy is ridiculous. Many students get at least one 0 b/c of respondus lockdown browser or wifi disconnecting. Not worth the stress and the INSANE amount of weekly reading
took the online course. no lectures. complex topics. extremely difficult exams. Grade is based on: Quizzes and tests 29% Packback (reflections) 15% Exams 55%
Dr. Lyerly has very strict policies for her course, but she is also very thorough and organized. Psychology, in general, is a difficult course filled with a great deal of content, so be prepared to actively do the readings and study. I did well in the course and learned a lot, but it is extremely important to apply yourself to be successful.
I was really scared going into this class because of the reviews but I actually liked this class. Grading is a little weird but if you just do the work you'll get a decent grade. I will say to study for the exams and pay attention during the lectures because some information from those will show up on the exams.
The study guides NEVER match up to the exams bc the TAs make them despite having not seen the exams. The practice questions in the textbook do not help either and neither do the learning curves. Exams are worth a HUGE portion of the grade and are extremely specific and difficult. If you are not ready to study hard, avoid this class.
Could quite literally be the worst professor at UNCC. Study guides for tests were zero help. Lectures consisted of her reading from a PowerPoint. Was accused of cheating on a test, emailed her proof that I didn't with the security camera footage from my room, and she ghosted me. Copped a zero on a test that I genuinely did well on. Avoid her!
I do not recommend this professor AT ALL!!! she has a very, very strict testing/grading criteria. She doesn't care if you pass or fail, tests don't relate to reviews at all, class itself is easy but she makes it almost impossible to pass her class.
there is lots of homework, however it does really help boost your grade. She is very strict in testing, but if you follow her guidelines in not hard. She doesn't cover everything on the test in lecture, so make sure you read the textbook so you dont miss anything.
It's a fine class. There's a bunch of assignments that can overwhelm you. Which would be reading from the textbook having 2-4 quiz assignments on that chapter and then having a discussion board on the content in that chapter each week. Also every couple weeks there's an exam that goes extremely in depth into the topic covered in those modules.
For a Psych teacher, she doesn't care about mental health. The tests doesn't cover anything we learn from the study guides. She has a very strict grading system and she will not hesitate to give you a zero on the exam. Then after she gives you a zero she just disappears without giving you an explanation.
To my dismay, I had to take a course offered by Jordan Lyerly this past semester. She is the most impractical "professional" I have encountered at UNC Charlotte. This is a woman who takes her job way too seriously, yet is idle when it comes to helping students succeed.
Expanding on my preceding review, every exam is curved but the final. I don't care what it says in the syllabus --(nobody reads that) when you curve every exam across the span of a semester, you're setting a precedent that you'll do the same on the final. You'd think a doctorate would teach you that, Jordan.
Lastly, Jordan Lyerly has shown virtually no ability to use discretion. She is so "by the book" I'm convinced she's forgotten that she is the one who makes the rules! This will fizzle out with age and experience, it's just unfortunate so many of us have to deal with this now. Maybe in 30 yrs she will become a serviceable prof. For now, steer clear!
Honestly this class sounds scarier than it really is. Do your assignments and you will be fine. If you are interested in psychology it shouldn't be any trouble.
This is easily the worst class I have taken at UNCC. The tests are ridiculously hard and she ends up having to curve every test. The TAs make the study guides which are unreliable and not very helpful. Be ready to teach yourself this course.
Overly difficult course. For an introductory neuroanatomy & neurophysiology course, there is way too much detail to memorize. Expect to read the entire textbook chapter and take thorough notes. Exams 1 and 2 were fairly easy but 3, 4 & final had the most minutely detailed questions. Videos are just her reading word for word the PPT. Regret taking!
Even in a car crash. You will still be graded, with a failing grade. No empathy.
Lectures are identical to what you have to read in the textbook, but attendance is mandatory. Not very understanding or flexible on grading policy. Assignments are identical from week to week, and somewhat long but Tests are challenging and application-based. Just do the hw and go to class and you'll be fine
This class is not easy. To do good on the exams you need to read each chapter throughly and take your own notes. Just reading the slides will not cut it. Tests are very detailed and difficult. Study as if everything will be on the tests even if they are not listed on the study guide.
Incredibly strict when it comes to tests. Every little detail said in a lecture was on each test. Easy homework assignment. She is so strict and even kicked people out of class for speaking once. Take another Professors class.
For an "intro" course that dictates whether or not you continue as a psych major/minor, she is unbelievably difficult. There is not a single justification as to why she should be the primary professor for this course.
A very strict professor. She was my first psyc professor and made me question if I wanted to stick to my major or not. Read through all texts and courses very well and be there for attendance it is required for your grade. Plus she mentions random things that are later mentioned on the test. So pay attention or get a different professor!!
this was the worst professor i have ever encountered. she curved the first 2 exams then decided not to curve the final exam for no reason at all. and the final exam is optional, her ta SUCKED, they kept canceled PAL, they went over stuff that not even included. SHE DOES NOT CARE about ur personal life. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS
This is the WORST professor I ever had. I took anatomy and physiology and it was EASIER than this course. Her tests are ridiculously difficult and irrelevant to what we learn. She is not consistent in curving and I honestly don't even think it correlates to average which SHE REFUSES TO DISPLAY because they are so low. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
Embarrassment to the department and to the university. You will have to teach yourself, her lectures are boring and useless. She does not prepare you for the exam; barely anyone passes. She will not work with you for even an emergency. She operates in the gray area when it comes to university code of conduct. Avoid her like the plague.
Makes it very hard in an easy class to get a good grade even when you go the extra mile taking notes.
Waste of time. This was a hybrid class: everything is taught online. No tests or exams, and nothing is stopping you from using google for A's on quizzes. Take this class for a free gen-ed. Don't expect to retain anything. Exams are 200 wrd “reflections” where you just trauma dump for an easy A as long as you define a word from the last topic.
Dr. Lyerly was not bad-- maybe because I had her online. I don't know why everyone is complaining. The class is easy to get an A in if you just do your work. Im ngl, I devote about 5-7 diligent hours a week to this course and I have a straight A. Everything is open note, just do the lectures and refer to notes and turn in all assignments. Easy
This class is on the study of the brain and she has us write reflections about how we can apply what we 'learned' in class to our lives. The paper allowed a max of 300 words I misread the instructions and accidentally wrote more. She gave me a 0 which dropped my grade from an 86 to a 75 so I emailed her but she didn't care and still gave the 0.
Worst ever. This why teachers don't get paid well. Its because of professors like Dr. Lyerly. This isn't a class where you learn things. She doesn't care at all lmao. All of our assignments are graded by an AI. Packback is the worst educational platform ever. Don't take psychology from Lyerly. You wont learn anything. She shouldn't teach.
She is HORRENDOUS with a capital H. All she does for an hour and fifteen minutes is yap about the slides she's presenting. She doesn't care about ANY of her students as she never responds to emails. She has no exciting variety to her class as Packback assignments and Unit Reflections decide this class...
We did not have any exams, instead doing reflection papers that are graded fairly. There's lots of opportunities for easy grades, as there's learning curves due every week that are basically participation grades for studying. Lowest scores except reflection papers are dropped. Super easy! Lot of homework but none of it difficult.
She is the antithesis of what an educator should be—cold, rigid, & lacking empathy. Her "no exceptions" rule dismisses students' real-life struggles, offering no compassion for crises or emergencies. It's baffling how someone so disconnected from the essence of psychology is trusted to teach it. She see's you as nothing more than a faceless number.
This professor is a disgrace to teaching and psychology. Cold, unfeeling, and devoid of empathy, she treats students as faceless numbers. Crises mean nothing—her rigid "no exceptions" rule ensures zero compassion for real-life emergencies. It's baffling how someone so heartless and disconnected from psychology is trusted to shape students' minds!!!
I was thoroughly disappointed with my experience in the course I took with Dr. Lyerly. It was made apparent from the first day of class that she was more interested in maintaining "integrity" of the course by imposing bizarrely strict rules (which actually hindered the quality of education) than actually ensuring effective learning was achieved.
Unsure what everyones issue is with Lyerly. Everything is online, she's extremely chill. If you can't follow directions on the unit reflections, it seems like a skill issue not Lyerly issue. You do teach yourself the whole course, you get what you put into the course. If you cheat your whole way, you'll pass and not retain anything-- your choice...
Honestly, at first I really did not like her. Our first class, she stated so many strict rules and I was dreading this class. As it went on, it really wasn't that bad, you just have to complete your work on time and it's not like it's hard questions. With the polleverywhere questions in class, she was not very lenient if your internet is not workin
I have mixed feelings about her. The online class was easy (no tests/exams, easy quizzes). You are graded on reflection papers instead. If she has a rubric, FOLLOW IT. She will give you a 0 for the smallest thing. She is not forgiving about assignments. Just do exactly what she says and you will be fine. I barely studied for this class and got a B.
I did not like her grading system. Three reflection papers determined your grade more than any other assignment. After taking diligent notes on the readings (which were interesting) I did well on the quizzes. However, I'm sure most people cheated on them. I'm grateful for the online format, but I wish the professor used different methods.
Work would be due at 5 pm and no extensions what-so-ever. The only thing she graded herself were Unit Reflections that you have a whole month to do. Harsh grader on those, I recommend following the rubric exactly how she said and you should be fine. You mostly rely on PollEverywhere for a grade boost, so go to class everyday and on time.
The only reason I scraped by in this class is because im
The only reason I scraped by in this class with a B- is because I'm on Ritalin and studied day in and day out. After a plethora of screaming, crying, hair pulling head bashing mental breakdowns, I still averaged 60s on the exams. I don't even blame the TA's for being unhelpful, they were working with SCRAPS.
She teaches psychology well, but her grading system needs some work. Her class has no final exam, but she assigns unit reflection papers that needs a specific criteria to get a good grade. Participation is also necessary to pass the class.
Took online. Very easy class just do the work on time and don't procrastinate. Assignment criteria is very clear. No tests, just 200-300 word unit reflections that are super easy. If you do the work how she wants it, its an easy class
I can't believe she has such low ratings! Dr. Lyerly is very caring and checked in multiple times throughout the semester. This class is HARD. Quizzes are open note/open book, and I felt she was fair with her grading. The first writing assignment I didn't feel the instructions were very clear, and feedback could have been better.
I don't know why she has low grading but she is so easy with homework and quizzes. It's an easy A with her and never found it difficult. You do have to read but it's a few pages and no finals or midterms only reflection paper. She has TA's that helps a lot. Totally recommend
Dr. Lyerly is unwilling to work with you on anything. I had to email her multiple times because of mistakes in rubric grading and feedback. I only managed a B because of how hard I had to work for this class. I had a lot of extenuating circumstances and disabilities that she refused to work with me on. Disappointed by the quality of this course.
Psych 1101 was the easiest class I've taken in my life. Most of the people complaining about Dr. Lyerly have poor time management skills. The other psych classes might be different, but the only way to fail 1101 is if you forget to do the work or are just lazy. The Unit reflections can be tricky. I did well, but if you're unsure go to office hours.
This was an incredibly easy class. I was very nervous before taking her class because of the previous reviews on here but I was pleasantly surprised. She's a fair grader and gives good feedback; also, she has a VERY strict late work policy. But as long as you stay on top of the work and don't get lazy, you shouldn't get anything less than an A+.
The strictest and least supportive professor I've ever had. Grading feels inconsistent with the rubric, feedback is minimal, and asking questions often feels unwelcome. The class material is fine, but the environment she creates is discouraging. I won't even recommend my worst enemy to take her class.
Absolutely not necessary to attend her lectures. Everything was online and all that was done in the lecture was reinforce the material learned online, but there were no tests or a final, so there was no point in remembering anything you learned. Just get all the online work done and you can forget about this class for the rest of your week.
Extremely strict with deadlines and won't offer extra credit or curves, so you have to stay perfect the whole semester. Honestly, she often came across as rude and dismissive in my experience, which made communicating with her pretty frustrating.
Very strict with grading policy. She can be kind of passive aggressive, especially through email. I would say she is an organized professor but could ease up on the grading policy for sure.
Honestly, she wasn't as bad as the reviews make her seem. She makes her grading criteria and expectations for the class very clear in the syllabus so idk why so many people complain about that. All of her assignments can be done online and all in one day as well. Very easy class!
