Super, super enthusiastic about her subject matter. She's new to teaching, so she's still figuring out her style. But since she is recently out of school, she can still relate to her students. Very accessible and truly wants her students to succeed. If I can swing it, I will take another of her classes.
Jordan is not only an expert at her subject, but great at teaching it. I took phonetics because I needed it for my major, but she made it interesting. Her class is challenging, but her expectations are clear, there is no empty busy work and you will learn tons. She is also very available for questions and such (super quick to respond to emails)
She is very passionate about linguistics and very encouraging. New to teaching, open to suggestions, easy to talk to, answers student's questions. Although her Phonetics class is a lot of work, it's do-able and the way she grades helps. For example, the tests are worth a ton of points so there are other ways to make up for a bad test grade.
Jordan is one of the most compassionate professors I've had. She wants to help her students succeed and offers extra credit throughout the course. As long as you ask for help, she'll go out of her way to give it to you. I highly recommend taking this course with her. She's also pretty funny and fun.
Good teacher - will be great once she gets her style and curriculum dialed in. Lots of fun and never boring.
The availability for extra help was amazing. Hard tests, but a resonable grader. Potential for greatness here, I highly reccomend.
Very helpful teacher. Always ALWAYS available for help. Email response at the longest was 2hrs during normal waking hours. At office hours, great teacher, loves what she does, funny, insightful. Texts choice was good. Directly answered all questions, and placed review materials on Blackboard. Highly recommend her.
You won't find a bad comment about Jordan. No one works harder to be a good teacher, and it shows. She is always available for help, and is always helpful. Extra credit is available if you need it. The only excuse for getting less than an A in her classes is lack of time, effort or willingness. She provides everything else you need.
Jordan is fantastic! She has a real sense of humor and her interest in phonology is contagious, even early in the morning! Do take advantage of office hours and email in her class; you will likely need extra help/clarification, and she is very willing to provide these if you make the effort! I would highly recommend Jordan.
Jordan aka Brewski :) is such a great teacher. I would recommend taking any class that she teaches even if it's not your primary interest. She is always super excited to be in class and it makes you excited to be there. She is also extremely helpful if you have any questions. Everyone loves her!
Jordan is so much fun. I kinda did horrible one one of the tests because I stopped paying attention in class, but I still did fine in the class. She makes learning so fun, even with all the people in the class. I definitely recommend her!
I am a huge fan of this Prof. She's fantastic! Her lectures were interesting and engaging and she has a great sense of humor. Its a difficult subject but she is always open, if not eager, to answer questions and she does her best to make it as fun as possible. Take her!
Teaching Phonetics is somewhat elementary for her and I feel that she's overqualified, but that doesn't take away from her teaching one bit. That is to say that her lectures aren't overly convoluted nor too simple. Attendance is a must, though.
I didn't like this teacher much. She puts on this front of incredible awkwardness which I feel is some weird act and isn't very professional. A lot of students seemed to like it but it was just in the wrong domain. I felt like I couldn't talk to her easily because she speaks in a stilted distracted fashion. The class basically rehashes the text.
BREWSKIE ROCKS! She is one of the best proffs at wwu! Know linguistics, especially phonetic stuff like the back of her hand. She is way overqualified to be teaching intro and basic phonetic classes in my opinion, but she loves it. Her lectures are hilarious and involving. Be ready to work hard and love it :) highly recommend
What a wonderful professor! I am not a fan of this subject, but Jordan makes it interesting. She is very helpful and makes sure that everyone in class at least has an idea about what's going on. Two thumbs up!
Brewer is kick ass to say the least. She (unknowingly) made me want to go into linguistics! Take any class from Jordan! You wont regret it.
Very enthusiastic about linguistic. Fun & relaxed teaching style. Doesn't use the book directly much, but it's a good thing to have. She makes a tough subject fun & interesting.
Jordan is seriously great. She's really accommidating and really just wants to help her students. Don't buy the text book because she doesn't use it. I had no interest in anything linguistic-y but she made it really fun. Go to class because its really helpful for homework which can be difficult without class notes.
I took both phonetics and semantics with Jordan and she is easily my favorite teacher I've ever had. Semantics especially was fairly difficult and work intensive, but so, so interesting. She didn't use the textbook at all in phonetics, but daily in semantics. She has a fantastic sense of humor and is a wonderful lecturer. Take her if you can.
Jordan is a fantastic professor. She is clear and very interested in the subjects she teaches. Her assignments are fun and helpful and incredibly relevant. Her tests are a bit difficult but if you study, attend class everyday and do all the homework you will do well. I found this subject to be very challenging but Jordan made it fun.
Jordan has a serious talent for teaching Syntax. The course material was very challenging and I don't know if I would have done as well as I did with another instructor. Go to class every time as she sometimes gives unannounced quizzes and do all the homework that is assigned. It helps to solidify the concepts.
Jordan tries to be interesting and upbeat. I'm just not a fan of affected enthusiasm.
I had Jordan for both my Syntax and Phonetic class, and I'm not going to lie. She's fantastic! By far my favorite professor I've met here at WWU! Her tests are hard, but by making them hard she ensures that you completely understand the material. Just attend class, pay attention and take notes. You'll be fine! Great Class!
She is good at teaching the material, but I think she is very inconsiderate for her tests. It's all essay questions, and that is okay. But she doesn't give people enough time to write things down. It's confusing if this class is supposed to test on how fast we can write, or how much we learned. Also, she was not easy to reach throughout quarter
It's odd that I find such a good ratings about her because a lot of people didn't like the way she taught. Also, if you are an international student, don't take her. She is really unfriendly and do not have empathy to those who are not native speakers.
Brewer is a fantastic teacher, is VERY passionate about linguistics and knows her stuff.HOWEVER,she teaches undergraduate classes as if they are graduate school classes.I don't think she remembers how hard it was when SHE was an undergrad. Don't get me wrong, i'm not afraid of hard work, I worked my butt off in this class, she is just very strict.
She cancels class A LOT, so make sure you check your email before heading to class.
She is very helpful if you go to her with questions. I have not found her classes to be too terribly difficult myself, and unlike what another mentioned she does not actually cancel often. This quarter she cancelled due to illlness and weather, and gave notice in plenty of time to check your email before you leave for class.
Jordan did a really good job summing up Linguistics as a whole in just about nine weeks. She gives out a study guide for her tests, as long as you really study from the guide you'll be fine. Concerning papers, just make sure to address everything she puts on the assignment, and edit what she suggests you edit, do that & you'll receive a good grade.
Jordan by far had the funniest lectures I have ever had in college. I was not particularly interested in the subject though. If you plan to take this class for a GUR I would recommend Ling 201 instead but if you are just looking for a good teacher she is amazing. She grades hard and is really into group work but its not incredibly time consuming.
Lectures are easy to follow Not much homework They are very nice and funny and will remember you if you introduce yourself.
I love Jordan. I've taken her for semantics, phonetics, and a 402. Lectures, homework, readings, discussions are super on point. She's the toughest grader I've ever had, but it always feels fair. Especially for papers, Cs are ok and As are near perfect. If you work hard you can pull off a good grade though. Take a class with her if at all possible.
Even though this class was at 8 a.m., I was always excited to attend class. Lectures are engaging and clear. Expect daily HW and occasional random pop quizzes. HW and group assignments (online) are worth a lot so do all of them. Exams were long and challenging - most of my class almost failed the 1st one. Always willing to help. Learned lots.
Dr. Sandoval is fantastic professor who often weaves humor into her lectures. Unlike most large GUR class professors, she calls upon the class to provide answers or discuss the material (making the course more engaging). It is vital that you put adequate preparation into each exam (taking good notes, using the textbook).
Jordan is an amazing teacher! The class is SUPER interesting and she is always available for extra help and replies to emails very quickly. Thoroughly enjoyed her teaching style and would definitely take another class from her.
If you're interested in Linguistics, you have to take Jordan. She's absolutely incredible, brilliant, and her lectures are so much fun to attend. I hated having a class at 8:30am, but she made it worth waking up early.
Jordan was such a comedic professor and I always loved going to her class. She is passionate about what she teaches and really knows her stuff. She makes the information very interesting, but is a tough grader when it comes to the exams. I recommend reading the book and paying attention. I learned a lot, and would recommend her to anyone!
I took this class just to fill up my schedule but about halfway through the quarter decided to major in Linguistics. Jordan is an amazing professor, and made it worth having a class at 8:30am.
Jordan is one of the best teachers I've had at Western. She is super passionate and you can really tell she loves the subject. All tests/quizzes are online and she encourages you to work with others.
Jordan has hands-down been my favorite professor at western! Linguistics was a subject I knew little to nothing about and she managed to make it super interesting. The tests are pretty tough so I suggest partnering up with someone in the class (Jordan's super chill and will let you do that).
An incredible woman and educator.
Awesome class, awesome professor. Take it with her if you can. She's funny, passionate, and everything you'd ask for in an educator. Tests are easy and material is interesting. Highly recommend!
I took this class for elective credits and being a more math minded person I didn't particularly like this class. She does not have powerpoints. She just talks in class and while the lectures can be interesting, she rarely writes on the board so it's hard to write everything down. The tests are all online but sometimes were subjective and confusing
I love Jordan! I've taken 3 classes with her (LING201, 204, and 311) and hope to take more before I graduate! She is excited about Linguistics and makes her lectures interactive and interesting. She keeps it casual but don't expect her to hand you an A, you do have to work for it.
Jordan is honestly a great person, but I didn't prefer her teaching style personally. Even though I did well on all the small quizzes and homework assignments, tests do not mirror what we practice in class. You have to be good at applying what you've learned efficiently on her tests, as she is not an easy grader. I'd take her as a last resort.
I can't say enough good things about Jordan. She has a fun personality and her lectures are really entertaining. Worth getting up early for. She's extremely intelligent but down to Earth. Her classes aren't easy, but she teaches in a logical way that's easy to follow and far from boring. Linguistics majors, take phonetics/phonology with Jordan!
Use the textbooks and come to class. Tests are TOUGH but she was a fair grader and helped out if everyone in class did poorly. Fun and engaging lectures
Amazing lecturer who is able to keep a lecture of nearly 200 students actively engaged. You will laugh and learn a lot. Great textbook accompanies the class, too. All tests are open book and you can work with classmates, but I still felt like I fell behind when I missed class. Make sure to buddy up to get notes for those inevitable days!
Really tough exams but if you go to class it should help. Don't skip.
Don't miss class!!! It's not mandatory but you will fall behind and quick. She encourages students to work together on exams and quizzes. They're both open book but like I said, if you miss class and only do the reading you probably won't get anything higher than a C. Other than that she a good professor who does well at engaging her students.
Honestly, she says lectures are necessary to pass the class but they're not. Everything is in the book if you don't want to go. She is a great lecturer though, if you'd rather go and not read the book. Do the discussion posts.
Jordan is a really fun teacher! She grades hard, but that's only because she really cares about how you will do in her class and she wants you to succeed in the future. There was a large group project in my class, but she walks you through the whole thing, which made the stress go way down. I recommend!
Jordan is great! Her lectures are super engaging and she is very passionate about what she teaches! Her grading policy is very clear and everything is scheduled so it is hard to forget about something that is due. Attendance isn't mandatory but the majority of her lecture content is what you will find on tests, so show up to class. TAKE JORDAN!!
She is a great teacher and we have a great time in class during lectures. The homework is easy but it's all online (except for a partner essay) so make sure you give yourself reminders. The test is online so get with a group of classmates and create a superbrain. Other than that its a nice laid back class to take and see if you like the subject.
WOW! Jordan is absolutely amazing. She really knows her stuff. Weekly quiz, bi-weekly discussion post, three tests, and one paper. Easy to get As on everything. The tests are online, open-book, and she opens up the classroom so you can take them with other students. Highly, highly recommend this class.
Jordan is an amazing professor. It is obvious that she truly cares about her students, even in a lecture class. Pay attention in class, and there's no reason you shouldn't pass.
Painful class, but she's an excellent professor. DONT miss class, you will fall behind... but she doesn't take attendance sooo you'll be tempted. Hard ass so don't try and make up excuses, she'll know. Still.... I do love her classes and I always admire her knowledge in her field.
Class is a lot of lecture but she does it in an engaging and interesting way. She is clearly really passionate about the subject and does a great job of teaching it. There was a large group paper that we worked on the entire quarter, but she sets mini deadlines that keep you on track and make things manageable. Overall, a great prof!
Makes a boring subject interesting! All of her tests are online multiple choice and encourages you to work in a group on them. Don't skip class and skim the readings and it's an easy A.
One of my favorite professors I've had, sometimes explains concepts before saying what they are which was weird, but she makes the class super interesting and engaging. Class is largely discussion-based and guided by her or a very class-involved lecture so be sure to go even though she doesn't take attendance.
I was ready to be bored, but Professor Sandoval's lectures were super interesting and she was very animated in class. She was always willing to talk to students before and after class and was incredibly nice.
You don't need to show up to her classes to pass, but she gives amazing lectures. She made linguistics actually pretty interesting. She's funny, nice, and makes things fun. All of her tests were multiple choice online, so you can easily cheese the tests and get A's without much effort. Seriously recommend taking for a GUR - go to class!
She was pretty nice, hard to connect over Zoom though. I would take her again.
This class is open book on tests, which is really nice. But if you miss class, you will not get the info you need to do well. Lectures can get kind of boring, but I admire how passionate and funny Sandoval is. She connects with students well, and makes great impressions.
Jordan is one of the best professors I have ever had. She is so funny and cares about linguistics so much and her class structure is so organized. She gives us a quiz every week and then there are 3-5 big tests throughout the quarter. There is extra credit opportunity and she replies to emails super fast. I definitely recommend.
I took two classes with Jordan, LING 204 and LING 311. 204 was fine, but 311 was the hardest class I ever took at WWU. I got my first ever C and lost my honors standing for graduation. She took 3+ days to respond to my emails and grades based on proficiency of skill demonstration, so even if you complete the homework you might not get credit for it
Jordan is SO passionate about Phonetics and Linguistics. Which is great, But, it makes it really intimidating to ask her questions, especially since she doesn't really know how to parse down her explanations to be more simple and digestible. Her grading is based in how well she thinks you understand the material, which has pros and cons too
No complaints about Dr. Sandoval's class. Fairly light workload, easygoing class discussions, and a quarter-long research project presented at the end. Even when I turned in a weekly response which I knew wasn't my best work, I still got 100% on it, so she grades leniently. Very easy to talk to as well.
Professor Sandoval is enthusiastic and knowledgeable. However, that does not mean the way they teach is helpful. The lectures are all over the place and you don't have time to take notes. The exams are NOT on material covered in class or in the textbook. Even if you study 20hrs each week outside of class, it is not enough. Would not take again.
She makes lectures interesting but only talks about very simple things. There are no slides so it is hard to take notes as her lectures are very unorganized. There is a lot of reading and I never felt prepared for exams even after hours of studying.
Your grade will not reflect the insane amount of effort required for this class. reading is required but no opportunities to show you've done it. Extremely tough grader and non-sympathetic to emergencies. hardest ling class, poor teaching, and organization. Often moves too fast and you are graded on like six things leaving NO room for error.
Jordan was a super engaged and excited professor!! This was the class I looked forward to every week. The weekly quizzes are open note and you have 2 opportunities to take it. The exams are not open note, they rely on in-class-lecture information as well as information from the unit's chapters. Would recommend, I want to major in Linguistics now.
Pro: This professor is eager and highly educated. Cons: The content of the exams (60% of grade) has very little to do with the textbook or the lectures in class. You'll have to memorize exact definitions, and research things briefly mentioned in class to get a high grade. Her lectures jump everywhere, making it extremely difficult to take notes.
Professor Sandoval is an amazing professor who genuinely cares about her students. She explains the content very well and you can tell that she is passionate and educated about what she is teaching.
Extremely knowledgeable and very good at explaining concepts. The structure of the course felt a bit disorganized and deadlines/assignments/expectations were not always communicated well. They expect a lot from you and you will have to work to do well; this is the hardest linguistics course I've taken at Western.
I was surprised to see Jordan have such a good rating on here. She is nice and passionate about what she teaches but makes it impossible to take notes. She doesn't use slides and talks insanely fast which makes it really hard to keep up with what she is saying. At the beginning of the quarter she said the textbook was optional, and that was a lie.
Overlap between lectures and textbook is small. Exams are quite difficult and memorization heavy on concepts that may not have had much emphasis on either textbook or lectures. However, Jordan is very amiable and passionate about linguistics and you will learn a lot. Still, this class is difficult for a GUR; regular studying is required to succeed.
Jordan is an incredibly passionate teacher who cares a lot about her subject and is great at explaining difficult concepts. This was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken, and I'm happy to hear that starting next year this subject is being split in two. You need to be dedicated and not turn in any shoddy work, lots of effort is crucial.
very enthusiastic which makes lectures more bearable but hard to take notes as theres no slides and lectures are very unorganized. Exams were initially hard as questions were over complicated and many trick questions. Overall very nice and caring and when students complained about the exams she changed up the final to address our complaints
The enthusiasm Jordan brought to class was amazing and you could tell they were really passionate about the subject, but the way lectures were structured made it difficult to take notes, and exams really threw you a curveball. I took this for a GUR, and I acknowledge it's a 200 level class but even then my head was spinning sometimes after classes.
She was a great. I really struggled with this class but she was excellent in terms of answering questions and explaining things. I wish I hadn't had classes during all her office hours because the few times I was able to meet with her, her help was invaluable in understanding the material. My only critique is she doesn't always answer email.
Really good lectures. Dr. Sandoval obviously loves linguistics and is extremely compelling as a lecturer. Their speech is clear and full of vim, they make eye contact, move around, crack jokes... even when they're tired, you can still feel them caring about linguistics. You will have an easier time if you think you're pretty good at taking tests.
quizzes eve
Quizzes every Friday based on the lectures that are impossible to take notes for. Doesn't use slides/just talks at you the whole class while you scramble to find something to write down. 75% of grade is based on quizzes/tests that are in class/not open note. Only professor that made me genuinely consider dropping out of the class.
Sandoval was very passionate about their subject, and I found the course material in general to be super interesting. Sandoval was very approachable and accessible to students.
I have taken multiple courses with Jordan and have noticed some patterns. She is very passionate about the subject and is a knowledgeable and kind person. As a professor, however, I have some issues. She does not answer emails, and missing class even once tends to snowball because of the way assignments are given and turned in.
Superb. I fell in love with Linguistics. Don't know how to improve the class. Like putting a jigsaw puzzle together, it was so satisfying figuring things out! Participate in class and you will have an awesome time.
Jordan was great! They absolutely loved teaching this class and really cared about us passing. They were always easy to get in contact with and the smaller class allowed for more activity and questions about the topic. It was very reading heavy, but the text book is provided through a PDF which rocked! Overall a great class, would recommend!
