Great prof. Difficult course, but he makes expectations clear and is available for consultation and clarification. Lectures were interesting and funny.
Although this prof is well-spoken, shows a keen interest in the material, and appears highly intelligent, his ability to teach is limited by his apparent refusal to convey everyday information in everyday terms. Although this may be an asset in the world of academia (everyone's an expert), it's a major barrier for those of us learning new concepts.
Probably one of the most condescendingly arrogant 'professors' (not even a real one a PHD candidate!) I ever met. Not only are his assignments unclear so are his due dates on top of that he makes the students suffer for his ambiguity and lack of direction. Then when we voice our concerns he is so unhelpful and mean. Advice: go back to the lab.
Quite simply put, I had no idea what he was talking about. Maybe if he slowed down and didn't cram 10 hours worth of words into 3..but I doubt it. I couldn't understand the quiz questions. I am here to learn, not to be shown how much more you know than me!!!
All of what he says is on the slides making his lectures INCREDIBLY boring. He speaks like he thinks we're experts on the subject already and his due dates...mine as well not have any he only changes them every day! More organization is definitely needed. He does not know how to teach.
I come to school to learn, not to be made to feel inferior, which is how Jordan made myself and others feel. His use of long and complex words, no doubt to show his intellect, added more confusion to an already hard and condensed course. Quizzes were a joke, often wrong answers and hard to understand. There are far better Psych profs at Carleton
Jordan is a nice enough fellow but a poor teacher. He goes on and on about things better suited to a course in Cog, Psych (his specialist area) rather than try to make research methods clear. I started out taking Psyc 2001 with him but ended up being so confused,I dropped it. Will take it with another prof in the fall.
I don't know what these other raters are talking about (I think it's just one guy using different IP addresses). Jordan was amazing! Loved the class!
I don't know what these other raters are talking about - I think it's just one guy using different IP addresses. Jordan was amazing! Loved the class!
Awesome Prof! Great class!
Jordan is a horrid professor. He spends too much time talking about his own interests rather than the course content. I had a hard time knowing what to study and what was actually relevant to the course. He goes on about random topics relevant to cognition when it was a research methods class. It is very hard to understand course related topics.
He is a great man, and very helpful, but not a good prof.
Jordan is an amazing professor.
Professor was useless. Content presented in class was disorganized and did not relate to content in text. Treated the class like his own little experiment. More interested in presenting himself as hip and intelligent than teaching the course material.
He is a nice person but he doesn't know how to teach. His questions are very confusing.
Great prof, really helped me understand course content. Quite accessible, helped outside of class whenever it was needed. Interesting guy and whip smart. Class is recommended.
Good guy in person, funny and talkative. He gives out really hard quizzes each week (of summer at least). He talks well, his vocab is good. Sometimes his vocab is TOO good. Do sona studies for easy bonus marks.
He's a tough professor. He makes the material seem so hard. His questions are confusing. He is rich in vocabulary, so he uses different words every time. If you go see him during office hours, he will try to help, but sometimes you can get even more confused. For his midterms and final exam, study ahead of time and prepare yourself.
Although this prof is well-spoken, shows a keen interest in the material, and appears highly intelligent, his ability to teach is extremely poor by his apparent refusal to convey everyday information in everyday terms. It's a second year course for gods sake. Be prepared to learn the majority of the material on your own and God help you.
Terrible professor! You have to learn the material on your own because he doesn't teach it well. It Research Method 2001 but I felt like I was in Introduction to Statistics 2002!
Jordan was a really unapproachable professor; Aggressive, unclear and distant. I wasn't sure what I was being taught half the time. Lectures were not consumable due to his choice of complex words to explain simple topics. The pretentiousness was through the roof and made it hard to learn. Ego strokes. If you can, choose a different professor.
Does anyone know what this prof is actually testing on? His lectures and the books seem to cover 2 completely different topics
I honestly feel like this is the worst teacher i've had throughout my whole school life. His slides contain WAY to much info and he talks way too fast. Not even sure what stuff I need to take in for tests and what stuff is just his rambling. His lectures hardly relate to the textbook... I would drop this if I could
Lectures and textbook seem unrelated. Quizzes are tough.
worst prof! gives out hard quizzes and assignments
I don't get what people are saying on here, he was not the best prof but he was well spoken and his lectures were relavent to the quizzes. The online quizzes were somewhat difficult but the other assignments were pretty much step by step and an easy mark booster. If you are an A student there is no reason why this course should be any different.
His style of teaching is different from others but in a good way IMO. It wasn't an easy class but I'd take it again. He goes above and beyond to inspire you, to really relay the info on you. He's also very funny and his slides are usually filled w/ jokes. Yes his vocab is good but not so much that you can't understand. He's a cool prof/dude overall
This class is awful, the prof was great. He really tried to drill in things that just wouldn't makes sence, not his fault the course stunk :p material was overwhelming. Handed out bonus grades though.
Jordan, This was an amazing course. Don't give up the fight. #quizzeskickedmyass #justsupervisorthings #sadtimes #hashtag #JOR-DAANNNNNN #nnnOOooOOooOOooOoooooooo oui oui oui 11/10 would take the class again. CAT-ASTROPHY AVERTED
Jordan is an encyclopedia of interesting info. He can talk at length and not repeat himself, and continue to make relevant and interesting points. He's jovial, and easy to talk to and get along with. Solid professor, and good to chat with.
Teacher uses words no one understands, structure of the course is very confusing. Not clear on testable material. Class material seems completely different from course reading. Talks to much, to fast. Quiz questions, test questions, assignments are very confusing. Overall, class is very confusing with no need for it to be.
Jordan taught me one thing: Positive Mental Attitude. I was getting dumpstered this semester, and this class was not an easy one. I went to his office hours and talked about how to better prepare for the quizzes. He strongly recommended "reading & reflecting" on the readings. There is a lot of material in lectures, so "sitting on it" won't work. GL
He's teaching you things that will be very useful in later classes, but are overwhelming to know at the time.
Took this prof for 2100, was chill, lecture style incorporated some laughs and is for the student able to be a student. That means read text show up to class participate a bit.
His lectures are interesting but I found myself relying on the textbook. I get the sense that the lectures are more of a discussion of the course material rather than instruction so be sure to read the textbook beforehand. The final paper was really interesting but the instructions were a little unclear. Overall though, I think he's a good prof.
This was the type of course where I felt completely lost during the first half of the semester, but by reading the textbook and continuing to attend and participate in lectures, it all came together during the second half. Jordan is an entertaining prof (lots of memes!), but he'll make you work for your grades. It'll be worth the effort though :)
Talks way to fast. Very smart person. Horrible teacher.
He's interesting to listen to and good at explaining concepts, plus he seems like a cool guy. Only problem I found is that he isn't to empathetic in one-to-one interactions / helpful beyond the classroom. He also is a tough marker, so be prepared to think you perfectly understand the material and then still somehow not do so well.
You can tell he's very knowledgeable about what he's teaching but he just doesn't know how to teach it. His quizzes are brutal even though they are online and open book. The final exam was short but also brutal. I feel like he makes it more complicated than it needs to be. He drops your lowest quiz though which is nice.
His is a fine lecturer, but he includes too much info so the main point gets lost so I always felt confused. The quizzes are tough because the MC options are all so similar to each other. The exam was just as difficult as the quizzes, he even reused some questions (so review them for the exam!) Take this class with a different prof if possible
All I can say is... Physics envy. I have no idea why there was so much jargon used. He came off as a Charlatan. This is genuinely a very easy course and because of this, you get a theatrical show to try to convince you it is not. I took this course twice.. first with Jordan, second time with a different prof. Grades : C- to B+. Skip him if you can.
One of the best profs I've ever had at Carleton. I enjoyed his fast paced lecturing style alot, and learned more in this course than any other. But, I did poorly on the first half of the quizes, he seems to make them in a way that even if you could write an essay on the topic, you'd still have only a 50% chance of getting it right.
Don't take it with this prof if you can avoid it. Trust.
He speaks and goes through things way too fast and makes them unneccesarily difficult, especially his quizes which he has answers that are all too similar and material that he never mentioned in class. If you want clarification and speak to him one-to-one, he is a complete dlck and useless. He doesn't seem to care how you do.
The class would have been so interesting if it weren't for his poor teaching style. He went through lectures quickly and got off track, so making notes on what was important was hard. His quizzes were very difficult too. The hardest professor I have ever had and he isn't very approachable when you have questions. Very intimidating.
Overly complicates things and makes things way more difficult then they need to be. He really talks down to you and is not helpful if you have any questions. Definetly the worst prof ive had in my 3/4 years at Carleton, enough for me to come rate a prof here for the first time. AVOID AT ALL COST.
Make sure you read the textbook before coming to class, or you'll be confused. He loves going on tangents that are super irrelevant from the lecture material. (Hating MD's, Loves memes and cats etc.) His online quizzes were fair. Exam was pretty hard. He does do a grade shift. (Boosted my exam mark 18 percent no lie.)
Needlessly overcomplicates simple material. The quizes are difficult which I will not complain about but at times include material that was not mentioned in class or within any of the slides. The worst thing of this professor is that he is terrible with one-to-one. I always feel as though he is speaking down to me and does not ever seem to care.
Take a different course if you're looking to get a letter grade and you're a lazy student (be honest with yourself); take this course and put the effort in to understand if you are interested in cognitive psychology. He expects you to get a real education and learn the material, not just memorize key concepts. Use his office hours!
Had a good time taking his classes
Love the memes and cat references! Jordan is super knowledgeable. You need to be ready to do a lot of reading and reflecting. He comes off a little pompous but after talking to him a little he is really a sweet guy and cares a lot about his students, if they want to learn.
Makes even the simplest material overcomplicated, friend of mine took the exact same course with a different professor and her material (slides, quizzes, ect) were so simple and easy to understand. Jordan Schoenherr's quizzes are extremely hard for how easy the material is, and does a poor job of explaining course content, often going off topic.
For the fact that I'm in 4th year taking a 2nd year class, this class is way too difficult. Everyone told me how easy social psych is so I took it, huge regret. Jordan makes things extremely over complicated and makes no sense explaining simple assignment instructions. He is rude in his email responses when asking for clarification. Avoid his class
Overexaggerates simple concepts, also overcomplicates concepts.
I agree that Jordan has a tendency to overcomplicate concepts, but he facilitated the most comprehensive learning of a subject than any other class I've taken. It's hard work, but it's all relevant, and everything's designed to encourage student engagement with the material so that you'll remember it for a long time to come. Very well designed.
The word salient is now part of my permanent lexicon. It's tough, can be annoying but he is a good teacher as long as you try to keep up.
Jordan makes concepts overly complicated. I'm in my 4th year and I found this 2nd year course way too difficult. He isn't very clear when trying to explain the concepts so I found the textbook to be an absolute necessity. Online quizzes were hard but at least they're open book. I would take social psych with another prof if possible.
He can be more verbose than what is necessary during lectures, that is where the textbook reading came in handy, to make things less complicated. Overall I think he's fair and tough. His exams are hard, but if you pay attention to the grading on his assignments you can make up the marks. He did give bonus 10% on an assignment, so I'll take it.
If you can't explain something simply, you don't know it well enough. Hi, Jordan. Honestly, this isn't quantum physics. The need to make people think this is a rigorous major leads to this rating on this website. I retook 2001 and got an A- with another prof while only a C+ from Jordan. Honestly ridiculous. Big verbose vocabulary made you remote.
This guy is here to convince you that he's smart and that his profession deserves credibility. The amount of times he has insulted medical doctors or scientists, honestly so exhausting. His lectures are dry and he emphasizes abstract concepts through oddly chosen words. I feel like he's not worth my six hundred dollars. Skip if you can.
Nice enough guy but not a very good professor. Tends to bog down his lectures and slideshows with so much jargon and background information that you can't really find the main ideas. Basically gave up studying for the exam because there was just too much to study and almost none of it seemed important. At least the class was fairly easy.
He doesn't post the lecture slides before class and writes a lot on them. He also adds a lot of side info while talking about each slide and talks fast, so its really difficult to get everything on the slide down and what he is adding. If you take it I would suggest getting the textbook and getting VOD to be able to pause and write what he says.
If any of the following apply to you: DO NOT take a class with this prof. 1) Rely on late marks ever - 0 if it's not in on time without a doctor's note. 2) Enjoy clear concise definitions of any of the concepts. 3) Just don't take his class. I'm in 4th year and have never gotten anything below a B... This class/prof is hard af. Don't do it.
Jordan's lectures are very content heavy, I had VOD so it was easier because I could pause and write things down, but it is a lot to take in. The book does help a lot but a lot of reading. The Outline/Abstract assignment and essay are incredibly confusing and specific. Open book quizzes saved the mark. He seems like a nice guy but comes off pompous
There is no doubt that this class is difficult, however, Jordan is not the one to blame. He is very helpful and knowledgable. His lectures can be heavy but as long as you get the main concept you're fine - very interesting course. His essay assignment is an easy A if you follow the marking scheme.
Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about what he is teaching. He is not here to give you an A if you are looking for an easy course. However, he genuinely cares about your success if you actually put effort into studying and asking questions.
My father passed away while I took Jordans social psych course and he would not give me more than a five day extension for a midterm paper. Hes really one of the worst professors Ive had and he is really unempathetic. Id be shocked if he had a pulse.
I would not take this Social Psychology class again. The marking is unfair and little useful feedback is given. The final exam was not representative of the material learned in class, nor the material from the textbook. The written assignment was frankly a dumb assignment, and the expectations were unclear, yet marking was harsh.
Although hes a funny and entertaining guy this class was very confusing and he's not big on answering your questions. I found that his emails back were sassy and kind of rude.
I think Jordan is a nice guy, my friend passed away while taking this course and he was nice about it and gave me extensions. However, his material literally makes no sense. I've never gotten below an A in any university class, except for this one. The material is so overcomplicated for what it actually is, and the assignments are so precise.
Jordan is the worst professor I have had at university. Dulling lectures, makes his student feel like they won't have a good job unless they get a PhD and has the most difficult final exam I have ever written. Horrible professor DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES.
Jordan seems to be a nice guy, but this doesn't make him a good prof. I found that Jordan's class was needlessly harder than it needed to be for the content covered. His online quizzes were hard and his final exam was brutal. Jordan will overcomplicate simple concepts which makes the material harder to understand. Don't take his class if you can.
Jordan is an amazing Prof. I have taken two courses with him and I have enjoy them, hence you need to go to class and read the book. he will challenge you and make sure you understand concepts and theories. His assignments are clear and helpful for the future, specially if you are aiming for a masters. Jordan approachable and friendly.
He makes the content so much more confusing than it needs to be. I think there was a lack of communication between him and his TAs because grading was always different from TA to TA. He also has a tendency to be smug and condescending to students who ask questions. He's not the worst, but he makes an already difficult class much harder.
Really active and fun. Hard grader Make sure you understand. Read and pay attention in class
This prof makes simple material seem more complicated than it needs to be. He uses a lot of jargon. The written assignment was confusing, and the bi-weekly quizzes are extremely difficult-- he sometimes uses material that is not in the lecture slides or book, but something he may have mention briefly during the lecture. Only take if mandatory.
hard course with unclear objectives, but a great prof
The assignment was confusing and extremely contradictory in it's expectations. The TAs were as clueless as we were. I would not take a course with him again, or recommend him to my peers. He needs to reevaluate his assignment expectations and adapt because not doing so is pure ignorance in his faults or arrogance in an inability to change
He over complicates the information and always used physics examples to explain simple concepts. His quizzes are hard and some of the questions he asks you about some analogy he made in passing. The exam was 50 multiple choice questions worth 51% of our grade (cumulative). The assignment instructions were flawed and unclear. Also typos in slides.
I am an A student and still found this course difficult. The 1 assignment we had was unclear and even TA's were struggling to give us help. The final exam was cumulative (worth 40%) so he said questions would be more general when in fact they were the opposite. Too much content in lectures, it became difficult to keep up.
He should not be teaching 2nd year psychology course. His instructions for assignments are so complicated that even my TA had issues with understanding them. His final exam review was pointless and the exam was bad. I would not recommend taking his class. He talks about burn out among students, but his method of teaching does not help the cause.
He expects you to deeply understand, not just memorize. He is good at asking the right questions to make you think about how to understand the material but isn't patient enough to give you the space to "get there" while he's waiting for an answer. Regardless, one of the only actual Educators I have ever had the pleasure of being taught by.
I don't know what is it but its very hard to follow his lectures and most of the time I don't know what he is talking about. I don't experince this with other perofessors. Maybe his English is much stronger than mine but I don't know. He is extremely knowledgable and smart.
Nice guy, but I haven't learned much yet. His slides have a lot of examples and few concepts, but you have to know the examples. Quizzes don't really test students on the concepts of the course, but rather ask very specific questions about irrelevant details to see if students are carefully watching the lectures and reading the textbook.
Decent prof, though many of the quizzes were a bit much as they tested such specific information which oftentimes wasn't covered in the week's material. Intentional compassionate grading on the prof's part, as well as very clear and easy-to-follow application assignments, are what saved my success in the course as well as my rating on this site.
Great professor! His quizzes are mostly based on textbook readings
Pretty good professor overall! Super passionate about psych! His lectures can get very long (over 2h sometimes), but he's a funny guy so it's not too painful. Quizzes are pretty hard and I definitely recommend watching the lectures to get a good score on them. His exam was worth 56%!! Questions on the exam were MUCH easier than the quizzes though.
Great prof, his lectures are long but understandable. Biweekly quizzes are based mainly on textbook readings, and the exam is 56%, but all of the quizzes and exam are multiple choice questions. He is accessible outside of class and gives an extra credit essay on psychology. The quizzes are quite hard but if you read thoroughly you'll be fine
Jordan emphasizes compassionate grading so hoping hell choose to bell curve this course. Weekly quizzes are specific and answers are nowhere to be found in the slides or textbook, so pray that you wrote down the right phrase during lecture. The instructions for the paper are unclear and vague, but marking is rigorous and unforgiving.
Very confusing and vague instructions for the paper. 10 point deductions per extra page (seems a tad extreme).
RUNNNNNNNNNNNN he takes off marks for the dumbest things like i mean for capitalizing. no matter how much work you put into it, it will just never be satisfactory for him. do you know what it feels like to work on a paper for a week straight and still get 55/100. it's truly painful. don't bloody do it to yourself. he is too demanding!!!!!
You could spend days and days perfecting your paper and it wouldn't matter. Hardest second-year class to ever take, strictly because of this prof! TAs take off marks for the dumbest things!! And when you complain about your grade to either TAs or prof, they would never change it. Avoid this class at all costs if you want to maintain a good GPA!
His lectures can be pretty long but they're well done and interesting. He really keeps up to date with recent studies and events. His assignments are straightforward and the grading isn't harsh. His quizzes are pretty difficult though with vague questions. He organized and always posts the lectures. You can tell he cares about his students.
Class was always enjoyable and he actively tries to engage students. He is constantly dropping explicit hints in lectures on how to do well on written assignments pretty much from day 1. Quizzes are on textbook & lectures- a bit tough, but write down his comments when he specifically links material to assignments & it's easy to do well in my OP.
Please for your own sake do not miss lectures. Profs voice is incredibly monotone and super boring to be honest but watching his recorded lectures is even worse. Super nice guy tho, very accommodating. Gave plenty of opportunities to do well in the course. The final tho??? Super super super hard, you would have to have an insane grasp on thecontent
If I could give this man a 0 I would the assignments made no sense and when I asked the TA for help she told me to figure it out and was no help this is the worst class I have ever taken and for my degree is mandatory. AVOID AT ALL COSTS AND HIS TA'S ARE JUST AS BAD!!!!!!! SAVE YOURSELF!!!
Course is terribly designed and organized. Over 500 slides of online material at midterm!!! Material needs a complete overhaul. Assignment direction is not clear. TAs are confused. I am now using YouTube as an alternative method to calculate research design requirements. Take this required course at another university and transfer credit.
This course is very disorganized. Even after reviewing the syllabus, test and assignment dates are not clear and spontaneously appear. His feedback is not helpful and hurtful in some cases.
AVOID AVOID AVOID. His quizzes are MADE to confuse and honestly just wrong half the time. His attitude? Not kind or understanding at all. He frankly is kind of condescending. He is the literal worst prof I have ever had. Would give him a 0 or even a negative number of stars if I could, because 1 star is too kind for this man.
This course is a bizarre mashup of research theory and bizarre stat info. It has been created in an extremely incoherent manner. The course syllabus doesn't even provide clear dates or direction for quizzes & assignments. Trust me, it's NOT YOU!
Quizzes were super hard, but technically open book. Assignments were not explained well. If you haven't used excel before you're gonna struggle.
This is, without exaggeration, the worst teacher I've ever had. The assignments were so confusing that even the TA admitted they had no idea what the teacher meant. The instructions were unclear, and figuring out what was expected felt like a puzzle with missing pieces. The quizzes are no different and incredibly difficult. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
This course is incredibly disengaging. His slides are stuck in 2008 and his assignment instructions are NOT clear. The quizzes seem easy until you get your grade back and the class also does so badly on the assignments that he started adding bonus marks. This course could have been much more enjoyable with a different professor
Assumes a lot pre-existing knowledge and uses advanced vocabulary, does not provide practice questions or clarify what is on the tests. Interesting assignments but instructions are unclear, take this class with another professor if you want to do well.
I think prof. Jordan did a good job conveying lots of material. Lectures are boring but easy to follow, quiz questions come from lectures and the textbook and the assignments involve a creative mind - but once you have an idea on where to start they're not too bad.
Take this course with literally any other prof!! Assignments are incredibly confusing and instructions were unclear to the point that the TA's could not help. The quizzes and exam are built to be misleading and impossible to prepare for. Lots of technical difficulties that he blames on students, despite everyone having the same problem.
I was super excited to take this course… The lectures drag on forever and are very disengaging. The quizzes are AWFUL and never posted on time, you think you did well until you get your grade back. The assignments are so unclear the TAs don't even know what's happening. Not looking forward to the 30 question exam worth 30%.
This class was a mess. Due dates in the syllabus were confusing. Assignment instructions were vague and spread across an instruction document, lectures, and video instructions. The exam was cumulative with 50 questions and was worth 51%. If possible, take this class with another prof, it isn't worth the stress and confusion.
With no exaggeration, do not take this class unless you hate yourself
There are so many things to say that I will simply say this: I filed a formal complaint. It's really bad
Evil is an understatement to what this man is. Please I beg you for your own mental help don't take this course. The amount of times that this man made me cry and question my own intelligence because he wasn't to teach like I'm a PHD holder is actually insane. Plus the TAs were practically useless, -100000 experience :-( .
Class contained: 3 quizzes worth 10%, an assignment worth 15% and another worth 20%, short presentation (5%), peer review (2%) and a final (28%) Quizzes were purposefully made to be difficult, don't just memorize terms and concepts from the materials, you quite literally need to become an expert in order to do well. Final was curved heavily.
Jordan is a solid prof who knows his stuff when it comes to psychology. His lectures can be dense sometimes. he expects you to think for yourself and stay engaged, but you need to ask questions. If you're interested in the material, you'll get a lot out of his class. but don't take this class if your looking for an easy grade.
