Bummed because I really loved this class, until I found out he will use his syllabus to manipulate and power trip regarding assignments. Changed the requirements for a project the DAY it was due and his reasoning was "because I can" lost my respect. Other than that, it was an enjoyable class. Super disappointed.
Great teacher that cares about his students and willing to help to his best of his ability. Great role model and I wish we had more professors like him that make lectures more fun and interesting. extra credit is offered and take notes. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE!!! "Never Lose Faith & Always Fight ON"!
Professor Ramirez is passionate about chdv and very understanding. Lectures were not posted on moodle, but he allows you to take pictures of the slides if you ask. Don't procrastinate on the case study! Textbook wasn't a requirement bc it was no longer sold when I took the course lol. Grading is clear. HIGHLY recommend, 10/10.
Professor Ramirez was a great professor. you definitely have to read but he will help you the way through.
I respected Professor Ramirez a lot because he was honestly always there to help his students. Most of the time he made your brain work in circles because his strategy is to make you think. It kills but I'm so glad he did because now I am very knowledgeable about this course. Was always a great feeling coming to his class. Thank you Prof, R. 10/10
hard. never again. his guidelines to the midterm and journals are a puzzle. I worked so hard on my midterm only to be failed. he is a tough grader. also a very manipulative professor.
Makes you think, if you don't like to think on your own GOOD LUCK! Talk about critical thinking level in a personal manner, he's that! Grades are tough, but this isn't HS!
DONT TAKE this professors class! He is so mean with grades for paper. He has rubric but he will not give you grades on the basis of rubric. He said he doesnt care what you work for your paper, he would like give you grades he want. Also he is not respect. This class is not hard. But if you want to get B or A from this professor. Good Luck.
This professor is passionate about what he is teaching so the lectures are usually very well thought out. When it comes to assignments and grading he is usually very strict and there is little opportunity to redeem yourself. In my course he didn't accept late work and would fail you if every assignment wasn't turned even if it was just one.
I took Professor Ramirez at ELAC for CD 02. He is such a inspirational professor who will realize your full potential. Every time I leave his class, Im not only motivated to continue my education as an educator but Im inspired to do more and to be better. I highly recommend taking one of his classes.
This course was my first CD class and let me start by saying I enjoyed taking it. Professor Ramirez is someone who actually cares in the future of his students. Hes willing to help out whenever one asks him. Every time I would go to his class, I felt very inspired and motivated. His class felt very therapeutic. I would take another of his classes.
Professor Ramirez was truly an inspiration for those who are majoring in Child development. He does require 6 typed papers, a midterm, final and is very accessible outside of class. He is willing to help every student pass if you communicate with him. I would recommend this course with THIS professor because you will learn and is knowledgeable.
This class was probably the best I have had since I started attending college. It was a Saturday 8 am class, and I was regretting it just based on the time, but Professor Ramirez made it very worth it! I cried in the first class, that's how engaged I was with the lectures and the stories. I recommend taking this course with him, he will make it fun
amazing professor. I enjoyed taking classes with him, he was truly inspirational and is very passionate about his work. He gives a lot of examples and would go through something again if someone does not understand it. He may seem scary at first but he really isnt. Communicate with him if there is any misunderstandings. TAKE HIM, YOU WONT REGRET IT
I understand the positive feedback because the lectures are fine, however this professor does not care if students pass or not. he does not have clear grading criteria. if you want a chance at passing and getting a good grade, I recommend taking another class. he should have rubrics and go by them, but he doesn't.
Yes hes passionate but hes so conceited!!! He thinks everything should go his way or its wrong. Hes not clear with instructions and doesnt communicate back in a timely manner. He doesnt care if students pass or fail. If you want to pass a class this one isnt it. Take it with someone else!!!
He is such an amazing professor. Cares about students and is passionate about is life and reflects in his lectures. I would definitely take this professor again.
Interesting lectures, grading rubrics and criteria are not clear. He does not provide feedback even if you ask, makes it difficult for students to pass due to his high expectations. Expect: Weekly journals, lectures, and discussions with a post/comment to another peer. 1 Midterm, Group Research presentation, and Final
He is a really bad teacher he expects far to much from students he is also very manipulative, he has good lectures but he does not help his students, he is a very bad teacher please do not take him
The textbook is online. The lectures are great. Requires discussions, reflective journals, midterm, a group research project, and a final. He is very caring but sometimes won't get to you on time. Just make sure you cite your papers right so you won't get a bad grade on your journals.
TOUGH GRADER FOR SURE! Personally he is good but not as a professor. He makes it seemed as he cares but when you ask questions his replies are vague and redirects you to the "grading criteria" or syllabus. DEDUCTS POINTS FOR EVERYTHING and his grading policy is ABSURD; ONE missing assignment leads to an automat Fail or Incomplete--makes 0 sense.
This professor takes so long to reply to emails and when he does he does not answer your questions. He is very picky when it comes to assignments and wants it his way or nothing. Dont expect to get extra credit because he makes you work for it or you wont get any. Overall, this class was interesting but tough at times.
Overall he's a good professor just kind of vague with certain assignments. He replies to emails in a fair amount of time but can seem a bit standoffish. Not bad but clarification would've helped greatly!
This professor makes me wish every csula professor was like him. . Although he can be a tough grader, u get the grades you deserve. The reflective journals due every saturday can be a pain in the butt, but easy once you get the hang of it. Overall, so wonderful, he shares personal stories that make u connect with him and find passion over chdv. AWE
Professor Ramirez is awesome! His class lectures are always very engaging and really promote discussion. He is flexible and willing to help you along the way, simply ask. On that note, he is also very forward and has his expectations and standards set from the beginning. He offers opportunities to ask for help and if you are struggling, again ask!
Professor Ramirez is overall a great professor. The work is definitely not easy, but it is manageable. The lectures are great, and he gives great advice on becoming an educator.
Professor Ramirez is the best. He's the GOAT. He will help you and he is very understanding especially if you are going through something. He will be there for you and he will motivate you. He doesn't want his students failing and will go out of his way to help you. There should be more professors like him on campus.
Honestly, the professor is a HARD grader. Participation matters, so be ready; if not, he won't help you and refer you back to class. It's really annoying because he acts like he's on your side, but he really won't help you and won't respond to emails if you don't participate in class.
Prof. Ramirez is an amazing teacher. People complaining that he's a tough grader are just mad bc they didn't follow the clearly explained rubric. Weekly discussion, 6 Journal papers, 1 group project. Only 2 tests (1 midterm, 1 final). Extra credit avail. for those who haven't missed assignments. Emails within 24 hrs. Do the work and you will pass.
Im not a CHDV major but the content of what I learned was good. The professor himself is nice, cool and collective but he does seriously grade hard! There is a rubric but people still be getting dinged on points for not following it and the professor will not budge much regarding grades, so pay attention. I will not take another class w him.
Everyone complaining that Professor Ramirez is a hard grader, he has to be if you are taking one of his 4000 level courses (Upper division). He has to grade hard for 4000's. Professor Ramirez explains and shows you in class how to format papers and how get an A in his class. 10/10 Professor already took 2 classes with him and I'm not a CHDV major.
Professor Ramirez is the BEST! Show up to class, engage yourself and follow his instructions & you will pass. He only grades you on what he asks of you so should be no problem if you can read. If you need help on his requirements he gladly goes over them, sometimes even without you even asking. 10/10 recommend (hes a Giants fan tho) LOL
He is straightforward yet tricky . He taught you a lot of the concepts and his own experiences, which is great, but he will be so hard on basically everything, he tends to make everything a challenge, which could be really hard for those who are not mentally strong. Interesting experience, but won't take his course again cuz he is for real.
He is the best professor that I have ever taken! I attended every scheduled class time and really the class was easy. I started off the semester not liking him, because he can appear arrogant. This is because he makes you think and questions you. BUT he grew on me and ultimately will be a professor I will never forget.
he is not a good teacher, and he does not care for his students, he will grade very hard, and his lectures can get very boring. My class had to report him to the dean because of this, highly do not recommend him unless you like to cry :)
Professor Ramirez is hands down one of my favorite professors at Csula. He's passionate and is clear about what he wants in his assignments. He's there to help, so don't be afraid to ask for it. Yes, he's a harsh grader, but that shouldn't be a problem if you communicate with him and listen to lectures. Don't be afraid to challenge yourself!
One of the best professors at Cal State LA. There are weekly discussions and weekly quizzes. VERY EASY! 1 Midterm RJ and 1 Final RJ and a group project. Our weekly meetings were very interesting. People who complain about his grading are those who don't pay attention or don't attend class. He is extremely clear on his expectations.
His lectures were dope, I love them! He was a tough grader but as long as you follow his rubric you should be fine. This was probably one of the best courses I have had! :)
You have to read to understand the discussion boards, and quizzes. You have a group project. Is very direct when it comes to how he wants the assignments done but helps you a lot. Very chill and funny. Takes the time to help you.
He failed me on the 1st assignment which was a discussion to introduce ourselves. He said he failed me because I didn't respond to a student in 5 sentences..I did 4.Therefore I wasn't allowed to do any extra credit for his class unless he said so.Then he told the class that students text him about grades and it frustrates him..he was referring to me
Hmmm...I do not think he is a tough grader as everyone says he is. He just wants you to think critically about the assignments -- a skill that is very much needed in life. If you show up to his class, read the class material, participate in discussions, do the two journals (which are one page at max btw), and group project then you should be fine.
midterm and final are a one page reflection paper of topics covered throughout the semester. There are 6 quizzes(answers found on quizlet). one group project (8 people in one group) which is important to pass. APA format is important and will cost you points. This class is very easy just keep up with your group project.
Not the best professor! In small words, he'll fail you if don't follow his directions. Really tough grader! Doesn't really care about his students and he also doesn't accommodate students needs from the OSD department. Please take my advice, don't take his class if you're taking more than 3 classes a semester.
This POS has no empathy towards his students. He emails you during the weekend + weekdays and never leaves you alone. No tact whatsoever. He also gives out 0's on midterms sparingly if you write a little over 2 pages, you'll get one! Even if your paper is perfect. Also, there is NO WAY you can ever miss his class. You will get a 0! Good Luck!
The absolute worst professor I have ever had to take for an elective upper GE requirement. He has no idea how to plan assignments and that leaves students unclear about his grading criteria. VERY PICKY, will hand out ZERO's as if nothing, condescendingly sends "hope everyone is doing well" emails everyday while handing out F's. Get fired
Ive never had such a bad experience with a teacher. He does not care about his students. Gives low grades for little mistakes & awful feedback. NOTHING WILL SATISFY HIM! His grading is not clear like everyone says. Offers EC but won't let you do it?? He is ABSURD & makes 0 sense. Save yourself the trouble, tears & stress 0/10.
Read the rubric to avoid point deductions. Understanding APA style is crucial in his class. If you need clarification with assignments, ask for support! He responds quickly. Practice critical thinking skills and dedicate time to the project! Lastly, if he says write 1 page, write only one page. This should be a no-brainer.
He was not a good professor at all. If you would make one little mistake, especially on midterms he would give you a 0 for the whole assignment and not even grade it.
The professor tends to trauma dump and talk about his ex wife through various class sessions. He is a tough grader and deducts points for almost everything, but hardly explains what he's looking for in the student's work until after. Rather than making each class his personal therapy session, it would benefit students if he thoroughly explained.
The class is very involved. You have to use books for a lot of the assignments and the quizzes. The stories that the professor tells are funny.
Stay FAR away from this professor , he grades insanely poorly with little to no feedback. His communication is horrible and his expectations are through the roof. This professor does not deserve to teach the way he treats his students. He always swears he is some type of profit giving you a bunch of mediocre quotes that he writes up. DO NOT TAKE
I would avoid him. He is not necessarily an awful teacher, but he treats the classroom like his therapy sessions and talks about his divorce way too much. The final should be about his life, maybe then I would have gotten an A because that's all he talked about in class. Mr. Ramirez really needs a hug and a good cry (if u know, u know)
I have never had such an awful experience with a professor than with this guy. He provided no support and failed to communicate and respond. The class discussions and quizzes were easy, however the group project he assigned for the semester was a disaster and he failed to provide a clear rubric of what he expected. 0/0 I do not recommend.
His material is good, it was touching , interesting and educative however his grading sucks. This is an elective and collaboration in the course should be appreciated, I would NOT take him again.
He is NOT very knowledgeable, he is NOT a good grader and Not willing to rectify technical errors with quizzes and test. He is NOT approachable and Not welcoming of disabled students. HUGE group project for an online class worth too many points for an online group project and material is super convoluted.
I liked! Thought provoking course material. Friendly & responsive to emails. Finals/Midterm grading is specific, but fair, ask for clarification if needed. Projects/Essay tad nuanced, but I enjoy a challenge and an opportunity for critical thinking & so I found them rewarding. Cool guy, very progressive, and caring advocate for societal change.
Do not worry about the textbook! The class discussion was impeccable, demonstrating the skill and knowledge Professor Ramirez imparts. Be aware of the midterm; it's crucial, so get on it before the deadline. There is a group project. It's hard depending on other people, so don't leave it to the last minute.
Being a student for professor Ramirez was a great pleasure and happy i've token class with him even tho the class was online and was not virtual i would always stop by his office hours and get the help i needed he's a great person and really understanding i would take his class again.
Professor Ramirez's class layout was confusing at first, but I got the hang of it as the semester went on. His class consists of quizzes, discussions, and an Observation Portfolio. I suggest reaching out to this professor when you are confused, he is willing to set up a Zoom meeting to clear any confusion.
Prof. Ramirez is tough! He's tough but fair, and his only goal is for each student to truly understand the subject matter. He's personable and kind. He brings you into the lecture. Participate and take the class seriously and you will be fine.
Professor Ramirez is one of the many lecturers at Cal State LA. He is a very caring professor and is always on top of things, which makes this class both exciting to learn from and enjoyable to complete the homework. He provides you with feedback promptly and is a clear explainer. He is one of my favorite professors, and I would retake him.
Replied quick to my questions/concerns when I emailed him. Really enjoyed the class over the summer.
I took this course for the summer session with Professor Ramirez. It is structured well, one week to do assignments, and easy to understand. He is great to communicate with; the times I contacted him, he answered my emails in less than 24 hrs. Great professor, and I would take this course, or any other class, with him.
I honestly recommend this professor if you're planning to take child development courses. He's an easy grader, and gives clear instructions of what is needed. He's also provides feedback and advice for future assignments.
Professor Ramirez, was a great professor to work with. He helps you a lot on assignments that you are confused about. He can be a tough grader on bigger assignments but will tell you exactly what you did wrong and help with the next one. About 2-4 assignments weekly with 2 bigger exams. Overall very helpful and I feel that I actually learned.
At first, I was worried about Professor Ramirez because of his ratings, but after taking his class, I found he's actually a great professor. He's willing to help and works with your schedule if you ask. He's a tough grader on journals, but his feedback helps you think critically. He's clear about expectations and the rubric.
I had a good experience taking this course with Prof. Ramirez. He was supportive and responded to any questions via Canvas in a timely manner. He communicated weekly and explained what is expected for each assignment. The assignments included discussions and two reflective journals which were straight forward. I recommend this taking this class.
I had Professor Ramirez for a short summer course. He has good and quick communication via email. The textbook was provided, which was awesome! Every week, we participated in 1-2 discussions and a quiz. There is a midterm and a final exam. For this summer course, we were required to submit 2 reflection journals. Ultimately, it was a great class.
10/10 would def. recommend. COMMUNICATION IS KEY! He really wants to see his students succeed so make sure to communicate when falling behind. He downloads the readings so we don't have to buy the book (loved that) and lectures/videos/discussions are very interactive and simple to get through. Overall a great course. Stick it out and you'll pass!
Kind and friendly but grades harsh
He grades hard and has a weird set up for his canvas. Very understanding though
Professor is hard grader but gives exact guidelines to what he is asking for. Just make sure to attend info session for assignment to get more details on his grading for these assignments.
The professor is a tough grader but gives good feedback and is clear on his expectations. Make sure to attend the info sessions for the written reports as this will help you.
Semsester consisted of weekly assignments and quizzes. Semester long group project. Midterm and final. Workload was doable, if you need help he makes himself available to meet via zoom. As long as you communicate and do your work you should receive a passing grade.
CON: his announcements are very long. I'd rather have the announcements be broken down into categories. I've tried going back to check a few things and it's time consuming. PRO: is that he replies to his emails and messages quickly. He is an AMAZING professor, he will go out of his way to help you, guide you and make sure you understand.
The workload was fairly well, the only tough part was the group project. I find it difficult since it is online and everyone works on different schedules. Overall, he makes it easy to reach out for help and meet with him to receive feedback. He also provides us with opportunities to make up work and earn extra credit which I find very helpful.
Overall great professor there are weekly discussions, readings, quizzes, midterm, final exam, and a semester long group project. As someone who had many other classes with lots of assignments at the same time as taking this one it was a lot of work which is why it was hard for me to be on top of this class and hard to pass but definitely doable.
It was my favorite class of the semester! Super interesting and interactive. Professor Ramirez is a really cool professor and is always willing to help you out, would recommend taking his course.
this professor can be a thought grader just need to be attend class and work on group project.
Professor Ramirez gave clear expectations on the first day,so one earns the grade one works for! The module setup is easy to follow. The lectures tended to be more conversational, so I found it helpful to review the slides as I read the chapters. I appreciated the prompt responses to emails, informational Q&A sessions & Zoom meetings for feedback
Professor Ramirez is very understandable. The workload was fairly well. I do not think his class is tough, you just have to plan of head of time to get work done before due date. Weekly discussions, readings and quizzes. I really recommend attending class to be able to get a good understanding for the group projects.
Professor Ramirez's teaching style is not the traditional reading off of slides kind. He encourages a lively class environment where students can share their ideas and opinions regarding the course content. He is available to support you with any questions you may have and is always checking his messages through canvas. Moderate/heavy work load.
Professor makes lecture topics understandable. His lectures can also be relatable specially if you are a 1st gen student - so be ready to self-reflect. He's a tough grader on the essay & group project, but also provides A LOT of feedback. Don't be afraid to reach out for help he's always willing to support you as long as you're putting the effort.
Professor Ramirez gives us lecture during class. Every Weekly for discussions and quiz. Putting into eight people for a group project.
Professor Ramirez has facilitated in making my third year experience one that was manageable and informative as I was provided with a space where my grade became secondary to me actually being receptive to the information. Very understanding and fair and provides support and resources for students seeking extra credit opportunities.
I enjoyed taking his class. The final is a group project. Tough grader but if you follow directions you should be fine. He is very helpful and responds to emails fairly quickly.
This class is easy but easy as well to fall behind. We do quizzes every week based on the chapter as well as discussion posts. We have two big assignments, one being an short essay and a group project. The short essay hits your grade really hard if you mess but he lets resubmit it. The group project it is important you contact your group ASAP.
The materials learned were on a heavy topic, but overall, very interesting. The discussion posts were very straightforward, although on some of the bigger assignments, grading was a bit tougher, and the instructions were at times contradictory, which made them confusing to follow. Overall, I really enjoyed taking this course with this professor
Overall good professor. He managed to invoke some humor in his lectures and also connect well with students. He uses some life experiences in the lectures sometimes to make his point clear and help his students understand. The one thing UI wasn't really a fan of was our reflective journal assignment. Pretty deep class, but fun overall.
The course consists of weekly discussions, 1 essay, 2 exams, and a major group project. I suggest starting the GP as early as possible. However, he is a great professor. You can tell that he wants all his students to succeed. Gives great lectures & advice. Tough grader, but supportive if you need help. Overall, I enjoyed taking the course.
This course was very stressful, he is a tough grader but is available for office hours or during class for any questions, he's very helpful. All you have to do is follow the instructions LITERALLY. Overall I'm happy I took this course because I learned a lot about very serious topics and found myself reflecting from a lot of the course material.
Professor is very good with providing support and guidance, very helpful. He is a tough grader when it came to completing a reflective journal assignment. There is a group project due towards the end of the semester. Overall I enjoyed taking this class and learning more about the course.
It's a mix of videos, reading, and papers. The professor is very supportive; he offers a lot of feedback and makes time to meet you. I only found one challenge: there are a lot of check-ins that he sends, I found it difficult at times to go back and look for a certain message. Overall, it's a great class; he truly cares for his students.
This professor was very honest and clear when he taught information about child abuse, violence, and how it affects people.
The professor was truly inspirational. The lectures were clear, organized, and very helpful. The group project was an effective way to learn about different types of maltreatment. Overall, this was an amazing class taught by an amazing professor, and I really appreciated the experience.
Professor Jorge is honestly a good professor. I think he does his job well and actually cares about his students. My main issue is just the mandatory canvas chat for groupwork, us students prefer other ways to communicate and canvas just honestly sucks. Also the workload can get a little tedious, but for this class it's expected, just be prepared.
Most of the work done on this online class was straightforward just tough grader with last minute insight on “what he wants”. My grade suffered the consequences lol.
I would never wish this class experience I had on my worst enemy. This professor will not hesitate to break your confidence in your writing skills. Goes on early vacations at the last 2 weeks of class. This class will traumatize you as it gave me major ptsd.
