one of the worst teachers ever. his deep accent makes it hard to understand him. he gives us homework for topics he didnt even teach us. very unmotivated.
One of Worst professor. He never teach in class. His test is hard too.Never take him or you will just waste your money.
His accents cracks me up. this is goooooood!
Whatever you do don't take this guy!!! My experience has been awful. The guy knows his suject, but is one of those who does not know how to teach. Makes you feel bad when you ask questions or help. Just take someone else and you will save yourself from being humiliated.
A very hard class, not because of the subject becuase of the teacher. Don't ask questions or for extra help because he won't give it to you, he'll just make you feel bad for asking.
He is the worst teacher I have had in my life. You are better off teaching yourself then trying to learn from him. He doesnt even know what he is doing. He also makes you feel horrible about yourself and is a HUGE liar. Tells you attendance doesnt matter to him, LIAR!!! Threatens to kick people out.
Hands down the worst teacher I have ever had.
If there is one word I could use to describe this guy it would be: Dick.
Took him around 1997. He motivates you by making you feel like an idiot when you know yourself that you are an idiot for not preparing for class. Looking back on it, he gets you where you need to be with your math skills. Years later you still remember what he tought you. Trust me. Thanks Mr. S.
Was hard, but he still made an effort. very quick though. You have to know math from front to back. has a very good personality though. Is he related to count dracula??
He's a good teacher and knows what he's teaching. Anyone who knows some math and studies enough can probably do well. For those who expect to pass without going to class (even if attendance isn't mandatory like in most college courses), are delirous. Has an accent which is kind of hard to understand sometimes but I've heard worse.
Definitely a very hard class, and I dont know if you could get an easier teacher, but he was a tough one. I got an A, but I think it's because he curved all the grades at the end. If you get him, just be good, and he'll take care of you.
tough class
knows his**** but cant teach it
I took this class with him as a repeat to get a better grade. Not for nothing, if this was my first time around I would of failed...he KNOWS his stuff, he's just not very good at explaining things...and not for nothing...he sounds like "The Count&quo
Not a teacher you can have if you're starting from scratch. You keep up with what he's teaching, he's not so bad. Most people don't know this guy has like 5 degrees from schools all over the world and has lead teams of proffesors from Harvard in research... Might explain why he's impatient with students. Lots of knowledge, little patience.
Hard as hell. I warn you not to take him.
he really knows his stuff but he goes thru it soo quick... also a pretty tough grader...
If you're late to class, he locks the door on you! I kid you not. He's sorta nasty, and unless you've taken Algebra before, I suggest you not take him. He's not very good at teaching...and he isn't very helpful either. If you get him, transfer or something...

Had him in the late 90s. I think I barely passed his class. A very smart man who knows his subject, but a poor teacher. I never had a problem with him, but wouldn't say I liked the guy either. Unless you are a math wiz or really like math, avoid his classes.
hard to understand through his accent. and if you need help get really freindly with someone of the math tutors. most of my classmates and i droped the class. i did all the homework and he wasn't right for me. try williams or garlic.
AWESOME guy. explains everithing, teaches so good!! But you have to study, it's not the kind of class where you can lay back. Overall he is an easy professor only if you do the homework
WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER MET!!!! Took him over the summer while the world cup was going on, repeatedly left class to go watch while we just sat there. When asked to go over homework problems he said we didnt pay him enough to do our homework and refused. I think over 75% of class failed!!! WRETCHED MAN!!! I got a B plus in calc 2 C minus for him
we would spend 40 minutes on a problem, and he would just drone on and on about stupid****..then when it was over he'd say "but that's not really important"....so unclear. i'm a math major, and this man made me want to run away as far as i could from that subject
Great teacher. If you are looking for an easy A ,dont take him. He will make you work on your own many times <--great way to learn! If you want to learn anything take him. The class was hard but if you do the homework problems, you will be fine.
Worst math professor I've ever had. Drew symbols on the board... umm.. okay, what did they mean? That would be helpful... He knows what he is talking about; however, the man simply cannot teach.
He is probably the worst professor on the face of the earth.. DO NOT TAKE HIM! I always wizzed by in math classes.. but with him things are so complicated and forget about asking fo help because he will blatantly tell you that you are stupid.
Took him online-Don't take him if your looking for a easy class. He gives you 1-2 hw assignments every month 60-70 problems, but if you don't work on them every week, you will fall behind! Every month theres a test-which are impossible!Very hard. I failed, then took the same class with another teacher and got a A.
Great teacher. Always works in student's favor. Gives chapter reviews! Highly recommended.
He is an awful teacher. I've never been that into math but still wasn't that had. I had him for College Algebra and it was a nightmare. He wouldn't say anything he'd just write on the board and if you asked him what he was doing he would mock you and say "What?! You don't know this!"
tests were the basic stuff, not too many world problems, but it was pretty boring in the class lol. one time, he spent 45mins to explain ONE question, and told us it wouldn't be in the test after he solved it...(wth)
Even though his tests are hard, he works in the student's favor. You can either do the problems on or offline, online is better because he can see who is working on what and who needs a bit more help. I think he is a good teacher.
He is very tough;however, if u do ur homework and listen to the class. u wont have any problem
Took his online College Algebra class and it is VERY difficult. The homework is easy but the tests are close to impossible. He was very understanding though, and extremely generous with my final grade. I recommend this class IN PERSON and not online, unless you really feel like working your butt off for a decent grade!
Excellent teacher, easy tests just do the work and you'll get an A. I would highly recommend this professor especially for upper level maths!!!!
Do NOT take any of his online courses. I can't rate him as an in class professor because I didn't have that experience but, his tests online were unrelated to the homework. I studied the homework and none of it was on the exams. As a result, I failed because the material was new to me. This class ruined my 3.975 GPA. I would not recommend him.
I WOULD NOT recommend taking this teacher for math. He has an accent which is a little hard to understand. He's not very helpful and could go over one thing for 15 minutes. He goes off topic and talks about nonsense. He mocks students and will stop the whole class to call someone out. i DO NOT recommend taking him AT ALL
He was a horrible teacher. He sat behind his desk the whole time & you had to teach yourself. this was a remedial class and we all clearly needed help and he doesnt do anything. He said if you dont pass his final, you fail the class. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS! DON'T!!!
horrible teacher. made you feel really dumb. would pick on students and basically call us dumb infront of everyone. don't take his class. He doesn't even teach. he sat behind his desk while we had to teach ourselves the work on the computer
I took this as an on-line class. If you read the book, did the practice problems and understood them, the rest was straightforward. When I needed help understanding some of the concepts, Prof. Sarmiento was extremely helpful in explaining the material.
Mr. Sarmiento is one of the finest and knowledgeable professors at CMM. He is straightforward, open-minded and funny. Had a few good laughs in his class.. If you need help just ask he will help you. If a student does not ask for help, he should not blame the teacher for not passing..
Hard class overall but he is a very smart professor. Although he was sometimes hard to understand he knew what he was talking about. As long as you refer to the text and do your homework it is manageable. All of his tests were fair and if you ask questions he is very helpful! I would take him again.
Avoid! I took him for Calc I and soon regretted it. Downright mean and callous. I clandestinely recorded class one day just to be able to play how bad it was for others. Mathematicians are often aloof but this guy was terrible.
He is an amazing mathematician, ! If you want to understand math and learn it well, Prof Sarmiento is the best choice. He is extremely helpful to all who seek help..
Very very very smart man. Almost too smart. I took him for Calculus 1 over the summer. I think maybe 3 of us actually passed the class. He was straight with us - put in a serious effort or you will fail. Those of us that made calculus 1 our lives for that month made it out with a passing grade, the rest complained that he was a "bad professor".
One of the best math professors I've ever had. He explains the material with detail and clarity. If you do the work and pay attention in class, you'll do fine. Some may think he's pompous, but nobody is perfect. He does his job and he does it well.
Just plain rude. This guy is all about making his students look like idiots. It's very clear he knows the material but lacks to understand that your still learning it. Throws temper tantrums if you attempt to use the bathroom. Overall very knowledgeable but needs work on tact. You WILL earn your grade in this class.
Good teacher.
Took Statistics online over the winterim semester. Never found math easy, but was able to pull A's and B's in high school. However I found this class near impossible. Homework took multiple hours per night, tests were very difficult. Email replies were pretty condescending. Just take this class in person, preferably with another professor.
Took college algebra in summer. You will need to work your butt off in this class. I was going away the week of the final which you have to go to the school. He let me take it before which was very nice. You have to teach yourself the material and the hw takes up a lot of time.
Put on your big-girl panties, because this isn't a professor that will coddle you. I took differential equations over the spring with a nice professor who taught off of a powerpoint. I retook it over the summer with Sarmiento. Less pleasant, but a far better teacher. Do your homework, and roll with his dark humor.
Some students swear by him, but his style wasn't for me. I went from getting As in Calc I and II to struggling to pass. Lessons are entirely theoretical and difficult to follow. Hates giving practical examples. Tests are impossible to study for because he offers no review or guidance. Our final had four questions, two of which were abstract proofs.
Definitely don't recommend for Engineering students or others who will be applying Calc to their careers. Refuses to give concrete examples when asked by students and is just rude about it. Loves to give "guess what I'm thinking" problems on tests. No review before exams.
I have graduated now with a BA, and this guy is in my top 2 or 3 worst professors. Totally cold, bordering on sadistic. I like math but tend to be more of a qualitative thinker, and this guy made this course hell and seemed to enjoy it. TERRIBLE teacher. Knows math and acts as gatekeeper, but DOES NOT TEACH in the sense of helping you understand.
He never does examples when students ask and won't really answer your questions. rude and some examples don't make sense. we ask for other ways of examples to be shown and ignores you.
Stats online. Didn't teach at all, the book and online module did. Actually never even graded a write-in question on one of my tests. Just understand the study plan & homework questions in the module, the same questions are on the test with different numbers. If you get the problems down you'll get a good grade. Don't count on the prof to help much
Be warned potential student! Without a doubt the worst professor I have ever had in all my life. Grading was solely on tests, which were not consistent with what we learned in class, and the tests were not leniently graded. Partial credit is not given, so watch your math (especially since you can't use calculators!) Be warned! Don't take his class!
Horrible professor. He does not go in detail when explaining problems. He gives us definitions of problems and very little examples to work off. If you do the review worksheet he gives you and understand it, you'll do fine on tests. Worst of all, he insults almost all the students when they ask questions. My entire class stopped asking him Q's.
Hands down one of the most unhelpful professors I've ever had. I was optimistic at the start of the semester, but soon afterwards I realized this was going to be an extremely difficult class. He was really rude towards his students and treated us like we we're stupid every time we asked a question. If you can avoid it, DON'T take his classes!
There's no doubt this professor is knowledgeable on his subject, but when it comes to actually teaching it he's a lost cause. No practice problems are given during class. I taught myself statistics by doing the online homework; hours of it. Repeats himself too much about things that are irrelevant. Probably the worst teacher I've ever had.
honestly the worst professor I've ever had. I strongly recommend not going anywhere near his class. I had to rely on the online homework to learn and pass the class.
One of the worst experiences in a classroom I have ever experienced. I knew I was in trouble when he said "The american education system is terrible and that they give the answers to tests. I expect half of you to fail, because thats the way it should be." I do know we are called Harvard on the Hill but he thinks we are are Harvard... I dropped it
realy rude
Just run..... trust me. This guy cant speak English and is incorrect in his examples half the time. The only reason I passed was because I already knew the material
Gives a lousy review before exams. Makes you feel scared to ask questions because he'll make fun of your question.
You have to go to class to learn the way he does the work so you can get full credit on the test. He doesn't explain anything very well. He will make fun of you if he thinks that your question is a "dumb" question. He adds questions on the test that he didn't go over in class. The homework is harder than in class. If you end up with him, good luck!
So much class work, assignments are weekly and there is A LOT of them. Plus the class is pretty difficult. Would NOT take again.
I don't go to CCM, but I wanted to take this class to lighten my load come fall semester. By far the rudest, most inconsiderate professor I have ever had. He couldn't care less if you learn the material or not, and he is the least friendly person to communicate with. It takes him too long to respond to emails, which is important in an online class.
Very arrogant and difficult to understand. He doesn't like it when students show work as he thinks it looks cluttered and disorganized. Would not recommend
I thought he was a really great professor. If you want to learn, he's the best at explaining concepts and logically making your way to an answer; it's a lot better than mere memorization!
I thought he was an amazing professor and would definitely take him again. Brilliant man, and excellent at teaching concepts.. He may seem a little difficult, but his exams are literally just like his study guides
Worst professor i have ever taken. His HW consists of 5 problems, but each problem has 21 steps to it. And if you've ever used Mymathlab, you realize how much this sucks. Not only that, but he picks the most tedious problems for HW. Very frustrating professor, clearly no passion for teaching, it's just a paycheck, and all around bad person.
His "teaching" consisted of him telling you to finish all the assignments and exams by their due dates. If you're taking the online course be prepared to teach yourself the entire course as the "teacher" doesn't even attempt to involve himself past sending an occasional email letting you know a test is due that day. Expect no leniency whatsoever.
Absolutely terrible. He is rude and disrespectful toward students. I got in a car accident before class and told my friend to tell him, he shrugged it off and said nothing to me when I managed to make it to class just 5 minutes late because I was worried about what he would think. He is an unfair grader. He is not accessible outside of class.
As bad as it gets
Worst class ive taken so far
PROS: practice exams are the same as in class ones just with diff numbers, really nice guy if you're a good student, explains the (COOL) reasoning behind concepts CONS: MyMathLab is a nightmare, doesn't teach very well, not overly lenient with partial credit RANDOM TIDBIT: I envy his graphing skills so much! He is an extraordinary artist!!
I had him for Calc I and Calc II and he was great. He is very lenient with his grading and if you do the reviews that he hands out and ask questions when you don't understand you'll pass his class. MyMathLab can be a bit difficult but just use SymboLab for questions you don't understand and bring it up to him he can almost always clear things up.
Not the best at giving lectures or help, since class was very repetitive/boring and not engaging. Homework was all on MyStatLab and the assignments were annoying to do if you did not understand (help was not clear). I learned most of the content myself since in-class lectures weren't very clear.
He is a nice guy, but very very boring. 10 minutes into his class and I could feel myself falling asleep. He grades a singular thing by himself (otherwise just uses the pearson grade that the computer gives you) just to add points so if u don't do it, it probably won't hurt. He doesn't interact with the class but is lenient with homework deadlines.
He has a heavy accent that will take some getting used to. He often went off on random mathematical tangents. All grading is done online, all tests even the final were on blackboard, multiple choice questions which meant no partial credit. He was lenient on the homework due dates, but it was obvious he was just there for the check.
He cares more about students understanding the logic rather than memorizing formulas. I will not take him if you aren't interested in the logic of math. If you have love and curiosity towards the subject, prof Sarmiento is the way to go. His tests are parallel to those on homework. Doesn't do examples when teaching the material, he does them later.
He's very nice, and his passion for the mathematics is apparent, but his over-usage of My-Lab Statistics makes the class so unbearable. Be prepared to wrestle with a computer program for the majority of the semester.
I highly recommend that if you are not good in math or struggle with math, not to take him. I put hard hours in and got tutor and still didn't understand the concepts. He told us that this math isn't rocket science so you should understand it. I would only take him if you are good at math.
Goes on long tangents about phone addiction and attendance and seems extremely dismissive of anyone who's in this class for a reason other than pursuing future mathematics. Unless you're planning to get a math / engineering degree I can't recommend this professor.
7/10 professor in my opinion. He definitely knows how to teach; Calc 3 is a tough class, so it is hard to pass regardless of professor. He definitely did a great job with visuals, which are extremely important in Calc 3. My only complain is his attitude outside class. It almost seems like his enthusiasm abruptly ends the moment class is dismissed.
-doesnt take anything into consideration -grades are final -late work = 0 -doesnt explain -
AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS. The school is letting this guy tank students GPAs by continuing to let him teach here. I would've had a 3.8 gpa this semester, but his class tanked that down to a 3.1. You're graded primarily off of 4 tests. This class is very lecture heavy as that is all that every class is(besides for test days). Lectures are hard.
Calc 3 is HARD no matter what. Sarmiento made the class bearable with his lectures. The class wasn't perfect by any means; the homework took a LOT of time and the material is hard to master. His saving grace is the fact that he tells you what kind of questions you'll find on the exams the day prior, pay attention to those questions specifically
Good for people who need to understand why something works in order to understand the content, but often goes on unrelated side tangents. You are only graded on five things (four exams and homework, graded on accuracy), and need to visit him during office hours to see what you did wrong on your exams.
Im not terrible at math but im not the best. Taking his class was my worst mistake. His lectures consist of him just doing the problem without interaction and god forbid you struggle or ask a question because he will ridicule you for it. HeGoes on random tangents about random topics. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
This is my second semester taking his class, and he is much better for Calculus II than Calculus I. He still grades on only four exams and the online homework, but he goes on far fewer unrelated tangents and it feels like he respects the students in his class far more once you're beyond the "prerequisite math" classes. Also, he grades very fast.
He did not teach me a single thing all year. His lectures consist of him solving the problems with zero class participation. Everything I learned was from online lectures and the textbook. The homework is very difficult and takes a long time. He shows up simply to collect a paycheck. I would avoid taking this professor at all costs.
Great professor, he understands topics at a much deeper level than any other professor and will explain. His lectures are just him solving problems, but if you follow along he explains exactly what he does, making it easy to understand. He gives optional reviews based on test questions and grades on an understanding of content rather than answers.
The professor is passionate about math, but the heavy reliance on MyLab makes the class a bit tedious. Lectures can be dry, so self-studying with the textbook and resources like Unstuck AI is key to success.
I understand the professor appreciates the topic, but he puts no effort into making sure you understand the material. One day he will rush through 3 units and just start talking about how this generation doesn't appreciate math like he did. He's just here to collect a paycheck. 100% have to use outside sources to teach yourself the material.
Honestly changed the way I see math and made it a lot more understandable, gave us a retake on the midterm everyone bombed, he likes personifying math during his lectures, which makes them enjoyable to sit in even if you don't understand anything at first.
Prof. Sarmiento is such a kind and caring professor, and he is always willing to meet with students outside of class. However, his exams were challenging and often contained problems unlike the ones done in class. I struggled in his class due to my heavy workload; but I think if you dedicate enough time, you will do really well with him!
Very kind and caring professor. Very helpful outside of class when I went to him to review my test results. Gave a retake because our class did horribly. You absolutely have to study outside of class in order to pass. Emphasis on absolutely have to. Goes over the foundation of what he's teaching and you kind of have to cover the gaps on your own.
