He's a really nice guy who loves to add little anecdotes into his lectures. His accent took a little time to get used to but it's not a problem after two weeks in. He has a totally open door policy and actually seems interested in learning who you are and what your learning needs are. Recommended!
You can tell that he has a passion for learning and truly cares about his students. He always tries to integrate useful analogies to spice up the class a little, though it doesn't always work. Either way, he's a great person and for an 8AM class he kept me awake. I would definitely take another one of his classes!
He always tries to answer every question you have. And you can just go to his office without making any appointment. He is always there when he has no lab or lecture. He loves teaching. And he is also kind of funny.
He is very approachable outside of class and tries his best to answer questions during his lectures. Chem 121 itself is a course that is somewhat confusing at times, but he tries to make it more interactive with demonstrations. Good prof overall.
He is an amazing lab director!!
He really cares for the students. His teaching methods are superb and an overall great teacher
He truly helps his students in office hours and is really keen on answering questions. He's really approachable and smiles often. He truly cares about teaching (had us fill a feedback form asking how his teaching is and how to improve) He uses demonstrations a lot and that helps makes class more exciting. He is an engaging prof. Recommended!
I love his analogies during class! I found them super great for understanding the material. Would totally recommend going to his office hours too, he's super friendly and helpful and dedicated to the students. Though there may be long line for him, he's worth the wait.
A dedicated prof that is always willing to help his students. Makes you want to throw in 110% into the course/lab work too. Office hours are the best hours. Also, chilli pepper well deserved.
Amazing, inspirational and extremely helpful. Chem 121 is generally considered to be challenging once you get to quantum mechanics and that was true but he will essentially relecture and go over everything in great detail over and over in his office hours. What a beauty.
Really helpful and it is totally worth it to come to office hours! Lectures were fun and engaging, i would definitely recommend him to anyone taking Chem 121!
I really enjoy his classes. He explain the knowledge very clearly, and the notes are good. If you have any question, he is always there to help
Really, really wants you to pass! Great guy, great lab. Highly recommend doing the photometer group, even though it's a looooooooooooooot of work, it's worth getting to work with Nunez and helps you get a very deep understanding of spectroscopy. Your lab notebook is your bible.
Was very available to students who needed extra help. Was clear about what you were required to know and had reasonable tests.
I didn't have a strong foundation in chemistry when I left highschool, but that didn't hold me down. Dr. Nunez's lectures were very engaging and clear. Even if some materials were review from high school, he'd always explained it better. Both midterms and final were fair, if you could do the worksheet questions you will be prepared.
Professor Nunez, alongside Addison, provide an amazingly concise and clear lesson plan for an incredibly diverse amount of material. Take Chemistry 11, Chemistry 12, and a little bit more and squish it into one classthat's what chem 154 was, but through lectures alone they made everything understandable. Professor Nunez himself is also super nice.
Great lab director, very flexible with rescheduling labs too! Be warned of the long lab reports, and lots of pre-labs, keep up with the material!!!
He is amazing! If you go to office hours, he will literally spend hours talking to you. If you have a chance to take this course with him DO IT. Dr. Nunez is superb and is really passionate about the material and teaching his students!
Dr. Nunez is the reason I love UBC and chemistry - he is such a good person and he is there to make you passionate about chemistry. He respects students, and they respect him back! I would honestly pay for him to be my prof again!!
Dr Nunez was my favourite prof this semester. Everything was okay until the final. THE FINAL WAS DEATH
Amazing prof who cares about the students. He teaches the material well and is easy to understand. If you are confused, he will explain everything at office hours.
Nice prof. Quite easy to understand.
By far the lab portion was the hardest things ever. He helped by held lab report writing sessions for students and office hours. I actually had a health issue come up during the semester and this guy was so genuinely compassionate it inspired me. He told me my health was first priority and I felt so safe around him. (unlike other profs...)
LOVED HIS LECTURES! Your typical A+ grade prof, crystal clear, funny, etc. Prepares you so well for the midterms + final. To get an A+, all you have to do is go to his lectures, regularly check Piazza, and WORK THROUGH ALL CHIRP PROBLEMS!! One of my favourite profs so far!! Wish I could take another class w/ him. :(15
Phenomenal individual, lab director, professor, and mentor. Willing to help and very approachable!! Will be hunting those upper year courses he teaches.
Lectures were engaging and funny. I never dozed off during his classes. However, he lacks the ability to pinpoint the most common newbie mistakes made by students when understanding tough Chem concepts for the first time (trust me, there are some common mistakes made by almost all students.) Thus, it can be hard to grasp some new concepts sometimes
He was clear in his lectures and really cared about making sure his students did well
Fantastic Prof who takes the time to get to know his students, despite having so many. His lectures are entertaining and make me look forward to coming to class!
He's easily my favourite professor, provides clear explanations and goes out of his way to get to know students, hilarious and just all around awesome guy!
Nunez is by far the best teacher. Because he is hilarious and passionate his lectures are engaging. Take his class!
Awesome prof but this class took up too much time. We had pre-reading assignments, written assignments, and a poster presentation at the end of the term. Make sure you attend his office hours if you don't understand the lectures.
Best classes ever. Always wait for this class during my entire week cause this is where I truly enjoy learning as he makes learning great and easy.
Great lecturer! Captures student attention with engaging voice and jokes every now and again. Cares for students and seems energetic and approachable on the time. Makes me interested in chemistry!
A real gem of a man. The lab component of the course has a huge work-load but Nunez is there every step of the way. He makes everything clear and is really funny.
He's one of the ideal profs. He makes learning interesting. The demos in class are really cool. Love him!
Prof Nunez is great. Lectures were very clear and he is very passionate in teaching. Pay attention in class and do your assignments and you'll pass.
A great prof and a good dude. He's great at projecting his voice and explains things very well for the most part. Material is pretty easy, but the tests are a bit harder. You can tell he really wants you to succeed. Would love to take his class again, but you'll never catch me doing chem again lol.
He was so funny and honestly the best professor ive had so far. He came up to me and asked my name on the second day and remembered it until the very last day and really got to know a good chunk of people in his class just in lectures in a class of 400. amazing teacher
Projects his voice well, material wasn't too bad and he explains it well whilst making it interesting. Midterm was the easiest thing ever, final was pretty difficult. Lab component was annoying but it's not his choice. Study really hard for the final .
Dr. Nunez is an awesome professor. His tests are reasonably hard but if you review his workbook problems, you will do well. His lectures are properly paced and he explains in detail. He is nice and often offers candy to students. Although I do not like chemistry, I like his lectures.
The best prof I've had in university so far. Expectations are clear and content is presented well. Very entertaining and obviously cares about his students. Hope to have him again someday.
Don't know if it is just this year, but the last few chapters he just shoved through them. Could not understand a single thing he said. I don't know if it is just because of the competitiveness, but our marks are graded very tough. He is a professor to be feared because he is so brilliant yet intimidating.
Dr. Nunez was a great prof. Took his chem 121 class over the summer, and while the lectures were very content heavy, he found ways to make lecture fun and engaging. he is very open to providing feedback, and hes always available in office hours to answer whatever questions you have. Hes a great guy, and I totally recommend taking his class.
Dr. Nunez was AMAZING this semester. Despite the fact that online classes can sometimes be a drag, he did everything in his power to make the classes engaging and informative. Also, props to him for being super organized with his class structure.
Dr. Nunez is great! I had him for lab in 211 and decided to take 327 because of it. He cares so much about his students and works really hard to encourage learning while still expecting a high level of comprehension. 327 is definitely a difficult class but his enthusiasm makes the content really interesting.
Nunez is such a great prof, I really enjoy his lectures. Funny guy and goes over the textbook/workbook in a way that helps my understanding of the material. Lots of homework which is not that good, but it helps.
Outstanding Professor. Truly committed to student success.
Dr. Nunez is such a great prof! His lectures are in-depth and him being funny makes them engaging. He assigns a lot of homework and has pretty tough quizzes (not worth much but still). Nunez cares about his students, and I definitely had fun attending his lectures.
Dr. Nunez is the best! I went to his office hours and he is so helpful! In class, he tends to talk really fast (in my opinion), so it might be a good idea to preview the ChiRP. His quizzes are based on the problems in the ChiRP, so if you study you will be fine. He really cares about his students and helps us to find the study method that works.
A real gem to the first years. Awesome human and prof. explains concepts sooo nicely and is accessible outside of class. his office hours are very helpful and he hosts them for several hours before exams. His quizzes were a bit tough as compared to other lecturer's and were timed as well. So if you don't do good on timed quizzes don't take him.
Absolutely a fantastic prof. Holds quizzes that are tougher than other profs' who are teaching 121, but the time restraint and level of difficulty make studying for the midterms and final much easier. Very accommodating teaching style. Go to his office hours!! He will explain concepts thoroughly and try his best to help you understand.
He is an amazing professor, I had some technical difficulties with the online first midterm and he was very kind and understanding, I ended up getting an A on that exam because of him. The quizzes are a bit difficult but adequately prepare you for the exams. The only issue I had was that he skipped/ rushed some sections that were heavily tested.
Dr. Nunez is super engaging and you can tell her really cares for his class. Definitely recommend for first year chemistry
Dr. Nunez was an amazing prof and you could tell that he cared a lot about the success of his students. He made his expectations very clear and I enjoyed the way he explained concepts in his lectures.
The class was just so much enjoyable. Dr Nunez is the best everyone. Take his classes and attend all of them! His quizzes are a great way to test your knowledge.
absolutely goated. Not even in his lecture but I would skip mine just to attend his. super caring and incredible at making complex things easy to understand.
Dr Nunez is by far one of the nicest and helpful professors, who is willing to take the time to help students through email and office hours prevail in his class.
Dr. Nunez is an amazing and caring prof. I found him a bit intimidating at first, but it later became clear that he is one of those nice but strict profs. The lectures were clear and enjoyable, and he always made sure to spend a bit more time on confusing topics. His quizzes were fair if you studied, and great practice for exams.
I was struggling in this class for the first month because of my prof, so I started to attend Dr Nunez's lectures and everything immediately made sense. He makes use of his body and any props he can get his hands on to make the content more digestible. He went out of his way to help me by sending extra work and "adopting" me into the section:)
One of the best prof I've ever met. I just saw him last Thursday. He asked me how I'm doing in Chem 123. He's as good as my high school Phys teacher. My high school phys teacher went to TED talk. Dr. Nunez is willingly to talk about sth beyond the scope of the class. MO theory very good. Everyone should take. Life unsuccess if not taking his class.
The labs that we have are not very well connected with the 211 lecture. This professor really likes oral exams and even oral lab reports. If you are not verbally capable, he is not willing to give you the option of turning in a paper copy of the report but insists that if you cannot express it verbally, you do not comprehend the material.
The best professor at UBC that I've had so far! I don't know how he did it, but he managed to learn everyone's names in our lecture group, which was probably around 200 people. He's a great professor, and I would definitely recommend taking his classes.
He loves chemistry and teaching. Every single gesture and analogy he makes is purposefully designed for students to have a better understanding rather than just reading the textbook. He makes difficult quizzes, which seem intimidating to me and many other first-year students, but I think these quizzes prepared me to be less stress for the final.
Professor Nunez was absolutely amazing! His expertise in his field is unparalleled, but he doesn't make you feel dumb or ridiculous for not knowing basic chemistry concepts. His office hours are great fun too, and his lectures make sense. Only thing, his questions for exams/quizzes are hard, so be prepared and do a lot of concept based questions.
Love Nunez and his ta jiayu. They are so good together. Minor problem was the quizzes, brutal but final was easy enough. Class average was an A- which is super high. It is significantly more work than 121 and harder too so if you don't want that then definitely take 121. On the plus side, no midterms in 141 but quizzes are worth a lot more.
Nunez is an amazing prof. You can tell he truly cares about teaching and getting students interested in chem. Quizes were brutal, but by the final exam you can do well. The lab component was really cool as you get to work at a higher level than 121.
Literally best professor ever. His class was truly inspiring given I hated chem before I took 141. His passion for teaching is indescribable, and although tough, he cares for each of his students. The quizzes were quite difficult, but overall an amazing course and lab component! 100% recommend. Also, 141>>>>>121.
Dr. Nunez is absolutely amazing! His lectures are engaging and I loved being in his class. The 5 quizzes are brutal though but at least there's no midterms! but he's the best take his class
Not gonna lie, the course was quite challenging, but Dr Nunez made it so worth all the extra work than 121. The lectures were great, he taught them incredibly and you can tell he really does love teaching, and he really cared about every individual student's experience in the course.
Dr. Nunez is incredible! His lectures are always engaging and his labs are always fun. He is always available outside of class and more than welcoming for extra questions. His quizzes are HARD you don't really know defeat until you have taken quiz 4
He explains complex topics like quantum mechanics, VBT, MOT, and conjugation through body language, models, and analogies that make the topics both fun and easier to understand. He does a great job in explaining questions on piazza, encouraging students to think deeper regarding the topics studied in class. A real inspiration, would take again.
I've never had more fun in a class (and lab) and it's all thanks to Dr. Núñez :D. The 5 quizzes throughout the term were challenging but very clearly showed me where my deficiencies were so I could confront them "head-on" (#sigma). He was always available for students to ask questions and answered them with so much clarity! Take CHEM 141!!
Dr. Nunez delivers very clear and engaging lectures, making difficult concepts seem easier to understand. The quizzes throughout the term are challenging, especially because each one is cumulative, however, Dr. Nunez made all of the extra work very worth it. The 141 labs were also much more interesting than the 121 labs. CHEM 141 > CHEM 121!
Doesn't post answer keys to homework and tells you to go to office hours to check answers (very inefficient). You'll be lucky to get 1 question in at his office hours because of the sheer amount of people there. Fast paced quizzes with emphasis on time pressure. Accent hard to understand sometimes. Great prof, but course could be more organized.
Amazing prof! Classes always felt short because the lectures were always interesting and concepts were explained really well. Instead of having 2 midterms, we had to do 5 cumulative quizzes which was a little hard to keep up with at times, but it helped me prepare for finals. You do more labs than Chem121 but they are a lot more fun.
Genuinely could say so much about this guy. He is AMAZING! He teaches extremely well and incorporates demos and uses his body as a diagram when he can. Super accessible outside of class and will MAKE you understand. Genuinely cares about students and wants them to succeed. His quizzes are hard but I found them to be much more helpful than midterms.
amazing guy and genuinely loves his students. make sure to study well for quizzes
Definitely have to put in the work for this class but it's so much more worth it than 121. Dr. Nunez is obviously passionate about his work, cares about all his students, and puts in the work to make sure you succeed if that's what you aim for. Super helpful lectures and I 1000% recommend going to the office hours - it makes a difference!
If you are deciding between CHEM 121 and 141, take 141!!! Dr. Nunez made it so worth it. He gives engaging lectures, is accessible, and clearly cares about his students. Class expectations and organization was super clear. While the quizzes were initially difficult, they helped prepare me for the final and I actually retained the material.
Prof. Nunez is one of the most incredible teachers I have ever had! He managed to learn pretty much everyones name within our lecture, and also remembered details about us. It is beyond evident how much he cares about making chemistry fun and made himself accessible (even outside of office hours) to support students. Tough material, but rewarding.
Passionate Prof!!! The labs were so fun! Wish he could have teach CHEM123 :(
Lectures were fast-paced and engaging, and you can tell he's passionate. But NOTHING prepares you for the quizzes. Despite studying thoroughly, I still failed the first two, and his only advice was ‘know the material.' Little support from him or the TAs. Wouldn't recommend CHEM 141 if you need extra academic help.
He is a great lecturer, classes are very fast-paced but take advantage of office hours and you'll be fine! He knows everyone's name and makes a genuine effort to know everyone. Even though the quizzes were initially very difficult you will improve! Know oxidation states and ESPECIALLY equations of wavefunction orbitals, 141 >>> 121 any day!
Dr. Nunez is hands down one of the best professors I've had. Although this course was definitely challenging and you definitely had to put in tons of work, the lectures were engaging, and he's very accessible at office hours. There are cumulative quizzes but overall I'd say this course greatly prepares you for labs and the final exam more than 121.
You need to put much more work in effort than those in 121 but it is so worth it because he is the best professor ever and teaches so well. I am gonna miss this class. Truly amazing. The quizzes were really hard with averages in the 60s however, the final exam grade will show if this course was worth it or not.
This prof was definitely the best I had all term. I am a first year student and had him for 141, which is a single section where he is the lab and lecture prof. He did his very best to make the learning environment welcoming and fun. He knows close to all of his students by name and makes an effort to personally engage with them and be helpful.
This was a very demanding class. Huge jump from high school chemistry to here in terms of difficulty and time spent studying. However, I would absolutely recommend it. Prof Nunez cares deeply about his students & tries his hardest to make sure we're succeeding. Labs were FANTASTIC! If you're interested in a Chem degree, take 141 w Prof Nunez trust
Amazing professor, very passionate, and knows everyone's name and actively engages personally with his students. Tests are quite tough but rewarding (prepares for final). Made me want to switch major to chemistry so that says a lot. This course definitely prepares you more than CHEM121 and I recommend it. Lectures are fast paced, revision is needed!
Dr. Nunez is an excellent and enthusiastic professor. The transition from high school to this course's workload was challenging, but absolutely worth it. I gained so many study habits that will prepare me well for future classes. Quizzes are tough but prepare you well for the final. The labs are amazing!! 141 >> 121
Probably the best prof I can have for first year. He's very dedicated in teaching and chemistry, you can just tell by his lectures and labs. He actively engages students to reflect and genuinely cares if we understood the concepts. I would say getting an A/above requires lots of work, but among all courses this term I gained most out of this one.
Dr Nunez pushes us to succeed with encouraging messages after every quiz debrief, both when we do well and poorly. Lectures are fast paced- sometimes hard to absorb info right away but recorded so it's easy to go back and review. Labs are phenomenal! Was 141 challenging? Of course. Would I recommend? Absolutely. Great 1st impression of ubc chem!
I really enjoyed being in Professor Núñez class. He made the content digestible and entertaining though in class quizzes were quite difficult. He really cares about students and actively works to know everyones name and get to know them. I definitely recommend taking his class.
He knows all of his students by name, holds very frequent office hours, will meet with you independently to offer support, etc. CHEM141 is definitely harder than CHEM121. He expects a deeper level of understanding and application. The quizzes are hard, but prepare you better for the final than CHEM121 midterms. The kindest prof, I highly recommend!
