Doesn't know the topic nearly as well as he should.

He's really easy on grading. Really nice professor.
He is a really helpful and nice teacher. His class is overall pretty easy, with the exception of his homework grader being a pretty harsh grader. However, the final is about 50 times harder than his midterms, so you are not prepared for the material on it. I would recommend him, but be prepared for a very hard final exam.
Jose is a really great teacher. He's willing to help you understand the concepts if you're confused or if you go an ask. He's a fair grader and understandable. I recommend him.
Jose really cares about his students. He tries to make sure everyone understands the material as he teaches it in class and he also has office hours. He helped me with many homework problems in office hours which solidified my understanding of the material. His assessments are fair except for the final which he did not write. I would recommend him.
Jose is a really helpful and nice teacher. Very passionate about the course material and even writes the whole class detailed notes after each class. His lecture is very fun but he doesn't require attendance.
Jose is great. You can tell he's very passionate about the subject and about his students. His tests are clear and easy, and he posts all his notes online after the class. He'll give you extra time for help if you need it. You know you got a good professor when you're actually sad after the last class.
I drop in pretty much any time I want to ask questions for PDE. He knows every thing about PDE(Partial Differential Equations) and Sobolev type inequalities. The best part is that he could still answer my questions when i took the grad version. Great guy. Very Smart. Very Helpful. And very Caring. And he is able to make
I really liked him as a person, but the lectures were just too unclear, the tests too frequent and the content too difficult for me to like the class. There is homework and a quiz every week, and he frequently got stuck on the questions he asked us in lecture. But he was always willing to help you with homework, and was really cheerful at 8am!
Beyond the worst professor especially for a beginner who hates math. Beware!! He does not believe in curves. Does not care if you fail or not. Exams are really tough. Nice person but if you want to save your grade then don't take. I regret taking math patterns.
Jose is a great person, but his lectures do not correspond to the homework. He literally tries to trick you on the homework, which is counter-intuitive in my opinion. Even the tutoring that I sought was futile; they agreed that the questions were far too complicated for Algebra & Pre-Calc. Quizzes are weekly and the final is nothing like the hw.
Lecture material is so simple, however the homework is much harder. Textbook is not needed. Every week, there is a written HW due in your recitation along with a quiz every week in recitation. WebAssign homework is due Saturday. Lectures are boring, and half the class doesn't even go since he puts the slides up online. He is kinda lazy.
He is a terrible lecturer and does not prepare any of his students properly for midterms or finals. The class average is extremely low and he really doesn't seem to care.
Not terrible, not ideal, great guy! If you don't love math, don't take. If you do, then he's a lovely choice. Go to office hours/tutoring to make sense of any confusing lectures, but they are MUCH easier than HW. No worries if you don't go to lectures, it's all posted online after. Quizzes and written HW due every week. Big curves on midterms.
He gives a lot of homework and quizzes every week in rec. He wasn't really helpful in any of the lectures, probably would have failed if it weren't for my TA. I hated this class, and I have taken pre calc again so the frustration was real.
Took Algebra&Calc as a prerequisite for Economics. Diaz is the nicest guy in the world, but if math is not intuitive to you then take this as a pass fail. You can pass the class, but getting an A or B if you're bad at math is unrealistic with how the course is designed. You need to memorize the unit circle and forget about using calculators.
Professor Jose is an extremely nice guy. On the first day of class, he legitimately tells you that you don't have to come to lectures, as long as you do your work. He teaches really well and posts his lectures afterwards. Work can be hard but he is always reachable outside of class. I haven't gone to a single lecture, but with his help, I did well.
Jose is a nice guy, strange, but nice. No one attends lectures however as the material is fairly simple and he posts them online anyways. If you haven't taken math in a while you'll definitely find the homework hard as it is much harder than what he teaches in lecture. Drops lowest quizzes and hws which helps though.
He is an amazing professor. Definitely go to him if you want to actually study math.
Very fair grader. lots of homework.
Does errors while teaching(in MFE1), Has to go back and solve again, So much homework. Weekly Quiz, Weekly Quiz, Weekly Webassign(online HW), Weekly written Homework, Written Homework are are on an entirely different tangent. He teaches nowhere close to what he asks, Deducts points for using methods not yet taught,2 midterms, 1 final
Had I not taken Calc BC in high school I prob wouldn't get an A in his MFE 1. Even with previous knowledge of calc the midterms were still extremely difficult. Making one or two careless mistakes gives you B+ at best. Not the best lecturer either; in fact, students in my recitation often asked our brilliant TA to teach the course instead of him.
He's an easy to-go professor.
Jose cannot do arithmetic; we had to constantly call him out on basic errors in his example problems. He also skims over new and harder concepts in favor of going through the whole process of simplification that we already know how to do. He's a nice guy and is willing to help, but if I hadn't already taken AP Calc AB, I'd be screwed.
He is not really clear on his lectures and make a lot of mistakes in his notes. His tests are fair though.
He acts like he is strict and doesn't care about the student's grades, but he cares a lot and is available to help during office hours, explain concepts in ways that are easy to understand and makes sure that everyone understands, friendly, and super funny. It was a very fun class to be in.
Homeworks- take a while, but are fine Quizzes and Exams- Exams questions are well designed, quiz questions are slightly more iffy. Exams and Quizzes tend to be long Teaching- Fairly straightforward and decent at teaching. Grading-Maybe easy curve, but wouldn't know-was on high end of curve Summary- Best teacher in math so far out of 6 profs
He explains a lot at the lectures and spends 2-3 classes on reviewing sheets for every test. Remember to go lecture !!!!!
Jose taught my class at NYU Tandon during the fall semester (fall 2018). He clearly doesn't know how NYU Tandon's Math department operates, never comes in with prepared questions, and explains content in the class wrong multiple times. I never like to share my opinion on professors, but I went out of my way to make a review since he was so terrible
His lecture is terrible. He is enthusiastic but he doesn't know what's on the exam and he couldn't solve some of the problems that is included in the test materials. If you know the test materials you can take his class and just don't come at all cuz he doesn't care. If you wish to learn, don't take his class because you won't learn anything.
Won't curve the class, and says if the whole class fails it's not his fault. Don't request a regrade because he wont even bother giving you back points, he'll just doc you more because you're wasting his time. Says he wont give credit for attendance but will discount you if you skip class. If you don't do the problem the way he wants, minus points
If I didn't take Calc BC in HS I would have been screwed. Yes, I did well; but the truth is Jose isn't good at explaining things clearly. He is a decently nice guy and has a passion for math, but his grading criteria is all messed up where if you get one MC wrong A- automatically and it's a downward spiral from there. Very hard to learn don't take.
One of the most aggravating classes I've taken. He speeds through lectures, refuses to take questions most of the time, and loves to give impossible questions for homework even though he would never test us on them. He'll give you the answers during office hours but if he doesn't know, go online and get Chegg/Slader.
One of the worst experiences I've had with math. I've always heard Discrete Math was a tough course, but this man made it impossible. Ridiculous homework problems, hard tests, and horrendous grading requirements. If you're stuck with this man I suggest dropping the course and taking it during a semester where literally anyone else is teaching.
Jose is... not good at all. His lectures are unorganized, hard to follow, and not very good. Yes, the class is hard, but Jose makes it so much harder. Just for perspective, the average grade on the final this semester was a 27%. I would absolutely avoid taking this class if possible. If not, talk to Yuhong. She's the best. Discrete Math is boring.
Do not take
His exams are HELL. Just, do not take this class with him. Steer very clear! He makes an already challenging classe waaaaay more difficult than it needs to be, and it sometimes feels as though he almost enjoys making students suffer. Even the other profs teaching agree his methods are almost unethical. 6 EXAMS for this single class. Horrible.
Jose does know his stuff, but he zooms through the class and there really isn't any time for questions during class. Homework is a whole leap away from the lectures. Exams are just as tricky, feels like I'm playing a mind game while taking them. I suggest reading the textbook like it's a religion, memorizing the definitions and the proof templates.
Jose was a very personable guy and he always brought enthusiasm to every lecture. He takes the time to explain concepts. The class itself is difficult but Jose makes it as easy as possible. The pace is pretty fast, so if you don't work quickly then it will feel a little hectic. Overall, great guy. He also refers to himself in third person a lot lol
The content after the first exam is somewhat difficult, but Prof. Diaz-Alban's lectures helped. However a lot of homework for the course (Web Assign and written HW), which I personally thought was a lot. I hope they make written HW (which is helpful, I''ll admit) more than 5% if they're gonna give us that many questions.
Great professor. Tough, but very smart and has a cute dog
has issues with basic algebra, and his practice problems are ass. he makes the tests, but he put stuff we barely went over. his explanations of class material are ass too. just watch youtube lectures instead (prof leonard), will save u so much time
I would highly recommend you find another math professor. I had him at Baruch College, not NYU. Anyway, he doesn't really explain much and in order to pass you have to teach yourself the lessons, but with the examples on the 25 question+ assignments given either weekly or biweekly (usually there will be two per assignment period.) Overall, no.
I almost didn't take his class because of the comments I read here, but Jose proved them wrong. He is very clear in his lectures, answers questions during class, and is well-paced. His exams were not the easiest, but they are very doable if you keep up with the homework and read the textbook prior. I loved his energy, outfits, and way of teaching.
Jose is a solid option. His class was a lot of work, masses of HW, and many exams, but he is a good lecturer. His notes are succinct and published after every class, which was extremely helpful. Just an overall good option if you don't mind the workload.
A good professor but sometimes didn't cover all the material that was on the exams, and focused on other concepts instead.
Very nice Professor! He gives great examples when teaching concepts. He is willing to answer questions after class and by email. Follow him and you will be fine.
CVLA might be easy for math students, but it can be a challenge for students studying engineering. However, as long as you follow the lectures and take time to digest every homework problem then everything will be fine. Outside the classroom, Jose is a really caring person and willing to offer you useful advices.
I don't understand these 1-star reviews at all. Jose was a great professor for LADE and I definitely recommend. His lectures were thorough and examples were extremely helpful. in-class reviews were also really beneficial- he took the entire time to answer any questions/concerns, which he also made time for in most other lectures for a few minutes.
amazing professor, passionate and energetic with his teaching, incorporates humor, accessible outside of class, provides a very welcoming environment, many in-class examples for practice, exceptional empathy and patience, provides a friendly learning environment, making learning from him truly an enjoyable experience
Professor Diaz Alban is a funny teacher who has entertaining lectures. He holds frequent office hours. Always gives good practice questions and gives a break halfway through class each time. Does not always take attendance. Sometimes his lectures get confusing but he will always clear it up if you ask questions during class
Don't rly agree with the negative ratings here. If u make an effort to understand his lectures and engage yourself his classes are nicer than the average sleeper math lecture. Very friendly professor and does his best to relate to his students.
I took Professor Jose at Baruch not NYU. He is a really good and friendly professor, always makes sure everyone understands his lessons. Definitely would recommend him!
The most passionate prof I have ever met! really detailed teaching, will take again.
Took MA-UY 140/MA-UY 3044 in summer. The lecture is medium-paced. If you know a bit about linear algebra, the pace might be a bit slow for you. Very clear explanation on how to solve various type of problems under each topic of linear algebra. Medium quiz. Nice note. Professor picked the exam problems and graded it. Professor knows linear algebra.
his lectures are probably the most engaging ones that I have ever experienced. at 8 am, it is very hard to be as energized as him. on top of his energy, his lecture style is also very beginner friendly to people with 0 experience with linalg and mid at math. if you go to his office hours, he tells you so much about how to approach each problem.
Amazing professor for linear algebra differential equations. I personally found his class better than van wagenen's because he takes his time explaining each problem and responds to questions to make sure we know what we need for the homework and exams. As long as you pay attention in class and go to office hours if you need help, you'll do fine.
Most passionate prof I've had!
Professor Diaz-Alban is the most passionate prof I have ever met! I feel so lucky to have him teaching my Linear Algebra! He explains thing so clearly and so easy to understand!
Very good lectures with onenote that update live and are accessible, so you don't have to take your own notes, just focus on understanding. Teaches everything well and exams are similar to the homeworks, which are very reasonable in time and difficulty. Attendance counts but not very strict. If you put in a normal amount of work an A is very doable
His older poor rating feel outdated. Had him for 2114 (Calc 3) and 2034 (LADE). He was great and his lectures were clear and really helpful. I don't think he specifically makes different exams from other profs but they were all pretty easy and straight forward. The only thing is, he will not respond to my emails even if he looks at them.
Really good professor, teaching style is more around learning while practicing problems instead of reading slides. Helpful review sessions before exams and very accessible.
Great professor who goes through problems thoroughly. Does review sessions before each exam that are helpful. Has a lot of energy that can be overwhelming at times. Sometimes he over-explains and under-explains concepts. Only downfall is that he sometimes forgets to define key concepts which makes content hard to follow sometimes. Overall good prof
Overall, he's a very good professor. He wasn't the one who made the exams so he sometimes emphasized the wrong things in class. Concepts may seem abstract at first but he explains them pretty well. His notes are very neat (uses Onenote). Very passionate and really wants everyone to understand and knows where and how students usually make mistakes.
He is absolutely one of the best profs in math department! His lecture is very logically and amazing! Homework is not much and the tests are very easy.
He really cares about how the students are doing. He gets to know everyone in class and check each one's progress on in-class exercises.
Nice professor!!!!!!!
My favorite math professor does a lot of in-class practice problems and walks around to identify common mistakes, helping us correct them. His notes are incredibly clear, and he's easy to understand. He's also very kind and encourages students as they start to grasp the material. You should definitely take his class if you have the chance!
His lectures felt so organized, if you lock in during class you don't really need to study besides before exams. Man is a character and a half but it lowkey made the class better. Also he almost always walks around to look at your work but I found it really helpful.
Just great! Take him!
I took Linear Algebra with him and he was great at explaining concepts. His exams are also really straight forward.
Great professor! He really passionate about his class!! He is really responsible and patient, class are easy to understand. Great Professor!!!! CHOOSE HIM!
Very good professor. As long as you attend class, you'll learn a lot. The professor is really attentive.
he is so nice and office hours are extremely useful. doesn't throw any curveballs on the test and even copies previous questions on the final. take him for linear
Very friendly and approachable professor. Has a very straightforward and intuitive way of learning that links concepts together and explains the complexities of each topic easily. Only reason I didn't get an A was because I forgot an important formula. With good studying you'll be fine. He does make occasional grading mistakes, but is quick to fix.
Awesome professor, super energetic and enthusiastic. Lectures are engaging and easy to follow, and he makes a point of learning everyone's name too. Walks around in class to check your work on practice problems. Accessible outside of class and genuinely cares about students. Tests are super reasonable as well. Take linear with him, he's great.
He's a great lecturer, great overall. My only gripe with him is this one section of his tests that's short answer, where you lose all the points if you're even slightly wrong. I stg I bombed that section every time.
Teaches content clearly. Able to go into details for a more conceptual understanding if needed. He also grades quizzes and exams kind of lightly.
Excellent professor. He explains concepts clearly and is willing to stay behind to clarify trickier questions, or if needed, will begin a class by explaining his answer for tough questions.
Extremely engaging, I was so locked in per lecture. Very conducive learning environment, very organized notes. Such a funny guy too. If anything, he just goes straight to the lesson and doesn't really contextualize things well so it might be a plunge in the water every lecture (but after the first 5 minutes of wtf is going on, you're golden).
Very good lectures. Funny guy. Very kind, but more accessible in person than over email. He does tend to work backwards, which can be confusing, but you'll get used to it. He makes a point of learning all names which is super sweet.
Great lectures, interesting guy. HW had some weird numbers at times but for the most part were good practice and not terribly long. tests had no curve balls, very straightforward
Unsure why professor does not have a 4+ rating... Prof Jose is one of the sweetest professor I know at NYU. He explains stuff clearly and when you are unsure, he makes sure that you can get the help. His teaching style is pretty neat, it reminds me like Prof Cereste's teaching style in some sort, so if you like Cereste, then you'll like Jose!
Professor Diaz-Alban is a very caring professor. From day one, he was putting in the work to try to remember everyone's names. Lectures are pretty engaging. Sometimes he can teach a new concept backwards by showing solutions first and then explaining how he got there, but besides that, his class and exams are fairly straightforward.
I took this class over the summer and out of all the professors who teach the intro math classes, he is by far the best. His lectures are great and cover everything you need to know for the test. If you're decently good at math, you probably wont need to do a lot of outside work. If not, OH are great too.
