Amazing professor! Super funny. The best lab professor I've ever had. As long as you go the lab, you should be good. Bonus: He's super cute- a puerto rican (aye aye)
Great Professor!! He is funny, caring, helpful, and you will have no prolem as long as you do your homework. He really makes the labs fun and worth going to. Would definitely take him again!
Great lab professor! He's very helpful and really funny. He makes the labs fun. Do the labs and ask him any questions, he's willing to help you. Show up to the labs and follow the rules and you'll have a good time.
I would not have wanted any other lab instructor than Jose. He is hilarious and has a very sassy personality and great sense of humor.
Jose is the best. He's really funny and sassy (he teaches Zumba classes and has his ear pierced). He'll help you if you ask for it. He provides clear instructions in lab. You can understand what he's saying. I wouldn't have wanted to take lab with anyone else. He only teaches 8 am labs usually, but it's worth it I promise.
jose is THE man. chm 147 isn't necessarily hard, but the labs can be annoying and it requires a bit of outside work w/ lab reports and pre-lab assignments. however jose made this class a lot better. he's hilarious and explains the labs very clearly. he also answers every one of my million questions every class period. highly recommend!!
Jose is the best lab instructor I have ever had. He is so helpful and breaks the material down for you because he wants you to learn it! All of his help also helps you in the lecture. He is one of the nicest human beings I have ever met. TAKE HIM!!!!!
Jose. My boy. He was great just show up to lab and listen when he explains the experiment at the beginning and if you need help throughout he is very accessible. Post labs are hard but that the class not the profs fault.
Jose is the best. He's always willing to help and answers any questions you have. Labs are difficult in general but he made the class less stressful.
Jose is a real bro, he made an 8am bearable and even somewhat enjoyable. There was a mix-up on my lab practical and he cleared it up no problem. He isn't afraid to make fun of you for stupid mistakes and it makes his class great to be in. Would definitely recommend if you can get into his class.
JOSE IS THE MAN! Had him for CHM1470 lab and when he picked up a 1580 lab for next semester I switched right into it. Helps with any questions you have and has a great sense of humor, especially when you make a dumb mistake. Great at explaining the lab. Only class I've looked forward to my whole time here. Take him whenever possible-you wont regret
Awesome. Tough chem 2 lab over the summer. He made it enjoyable and interesting. Take him if youre looking for lab credit. Fair grader
Good professor, made a 3 hour lab bearable. All labs and reports are done with your group and he always answered questions. A few quizzes throughout, some harder than others but didn't affect your grade too much. Communication was a little off with when to be in class some days but overall best lab professor so far. Mostly had help from TA's.
Jose was amazing. He observes everything so if your lab partner doesn't show up, he'll know and will support you throughout the process. He gives extra points here and there, but will also subtract points for messiness in your area or having to be reminded about your goggles so just be careful. Hes incredibly helpful and super nice. 10/10 recommend
I had Jose for my 8 am lab for Chem 1470. If you email him, he responds fairly quickly. He will answer any question you have, even if you feel dumb for asking him. He provides really good lab explanation/walk through before the start of the lab. Show up, do your work, and you will pass with a 4.0. It's a hard to fail class. Highly recommend!
Jose is an awesome lab professor. Made my organic lab bearable with his great sense of humor. If you have questions about why he docked points on your lab report don't be afraid to ask, he will look over everything with you and isn't afraid to give points back if he feels he made a mistake! Great guy. Take his lab.
Jose is amazing! He makes lab fun and he is super chill!! Anytime the graders made us lose points for stupid stuff he would give us points back, you just have to ask. Definitely recommend!
JOSE. IS. THE. BEST. !!!!!!! please, please take him. you will not regret it at all :)))
GOAT, always willing to help and crack jokes during the lab. Very chill laid back professor that forms a connection with all of the students.
He is the best!! I agree with all the positive reviews take him!!!
Very nice and caring professor. SCI1000 is an insanely easy class and he knows that students are there to get an A. He is very flexible with due dates and there is little-to-no homework in the class. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a good/caring professor.
Very understanding of student mistakes. Good instructor.
By far the best lab professor I've ever taken!! He's funny&likes to jokes around with students&made lab fun and enjoyable. He's ready to help you when you need it& was fair with grading. One thing he's strict about is wearing goggles so make sure you keep them on and go outside to wipe them if they fog up. Labs were posted on Moodle just print them
Absolute fav lab instructor, very nice and easy to talk to and is always ready to help when you have any questions. He explains the lab step by step before the experiment and the labs instructions also have step by step instructions. (You dont buy it, its on Moodle)& you work in a group and turn one report in and hes an easy grader. TAKE HIM!!!!!!
Great Professor. He made labs fun, efficient and understandable. Guidelines and expectations for lab reports are very clearly laid out and grading is very fair. Would definitely take again!
Love love love Jose. I had him for chem 2 lab and Orgo lab. He's a great professor. Hilarious and makes lab enjoyable and is always happy to help. Super fair grader I would def take him again.
Best professor ever, I would retake it 100 times if I could, he's funny and very helpful when needed.
Esteves is the best professor I have ever had. He is funny and understanding and really wants you to do well. Take this class, you will not regret it!
Jose was my first lab professor and I had the best time ever. I always looked forward going to lab and I usually got out fast. Easy A if you put in the work. Jose is funny, energetic, and a fair grader. Also, I was nervous during my first lab practical and he brought over my stuffed pusheen that was in the cubby :.) . Awesome professor.
AMAZING! He's super helpful, straightforward, and hilarious. he made lab easy and fun. not stressful at all! goes through the lab step by step beforehand and tells us the quickest and most efficient way to get everything done.
He is the best and very good looking.. I wish I was a bit older for him. :)
Professor Jose is a great guy:) due to COVID-19, the lab was moved online. Although it was a difficult transition, the class was made simple by him. The only downfall is he is sometimes difficult to catch by email, but honestly its most likely because he had tons of students emailing him at once due to the pandemic. overall great guy! :)
best professor at oakland without a doubt always looks out for his students and is super nice!!!
Jose is the best lab instructor I have ever had, He is a really funny and nice guy! He made the transition online (bc COVID) a lot easier. He was a bit hard to get into contact with during the, Pandemic, but he was an amazing prof and I was always looking forward to Lab Day! Take Jose!
Easily the best lab professor there is. I wish he taught lecture too. Always made lab sessions fun and brought such positive energy to the class. 10/10 would recommend
Gives astronomical amount of work with little time. Lets you turn in Labs and then tells you what needed to be done and how to do it after, thus giving you a bad grade that wasn't your fault because he never told you. Absolutely hands down the worst professor I've had yet.
He may be a great teacher in person but he is horrible for online chemistry. The worst part is that he is very difficult to communicate with. He also only responds to emails during the week at his convenience and often doesn't respond at all. Also, it is not possible to contact him any way other than email. Be ready to cry and work 24/7.
He was by far my favorite professor at Oakland University. I would highly recommend taking him for Chemistry Lab. He forms great interpersonal connects, easy to get along with, humorous, joy to be with, and will give you great feedback. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Take your time and enjoy working in the lab! Grateful for all of his support!
This chem lab class was super easy and Jose really helped every student succeed. Great guy, really funny and very supportive of students. It wasn't difficult to do the work in this lab but you did have to prepare your lab notebook in order to be successful.
The class has a lot of work for being 1 credit, but it is manageable. Lab every week, plus pre lab assignments (videos, worksheets, quiz), and post lab work (took quite a few hours to get everything done). Jose is very helpful and is available outside of class for help. Go to office hours and make a connection with him!
Loved him! Chemistry is tough, but hes fun and makes it bearable. The material itself is doable, but can be tough at times. The course was online/in-person because of COVID. This class was very particular! Always keep the syllabus handy! Only issue: he doesnt always make directions clear until the day of lab. If youre confused, email him ASAP!
He is very bad at getting back to emails. He is pretty unorganized and material for labs are posted very last minute. He is helpful during in person labs but creates a very high stress environment. Some explanation is given for most virtual labs but sometimes leaves you completely on your own.
Even though he is terrible at giving back grades and replying to emails in a timely fashion and some of the instructions are unclear, the lab was as laid back as a lab can be. You do your thing and just go. Plus, half of the labs were online which was a plus. Also, you don't get to keep your labs and he doesn't send a graded version of it on moodle
This was a hybrid for me due to covid. I don't recommend taking labs in any remote form. If you must, he is not bad, but he was very disorganized. Clear expectations were not established. Some online activities were posted in the wrong place or late and he doesn't respond to emails much. But he's nice, and gave us a lot of extra points to help.
Jose is seriously the best!! I had him for CHM 1 and 2 lab and absolutely loved him. He is not a morning person so be aware of that. Don't be afraid to joke with him! create a connection with him he's great. His labs are easy and chm2 is even better bc its group labs. keep up with dates bc he's unorganized but he is really helpful and grades easy.
ALL labs are ran the same just diff professors. Same weekly labs/work and syllabus for all. I would choose Jose over and over and over. I really hate labs but he's super helpful on anything u don't understand. he made it bearable. I just hope to find him available for orgo lab.
Jose is a real gem of a professor. He explains the labs very clearly, and is very non-threatening and helpful if you do not grasp the concepts right away. Very caring and has a great sense of humor. Labs are the same across the board, so it really comes down to the prof, and Jose is truly one of the greats. Highly rec being in his class!
Extremely unorganized. Never responds to emails. We had to get a band of people to email him the same question to get just one response. Difficult exams, but did change the grading in the end out of 700pts instead of 800. This actually brought my grade up from a low B to an A. Overall, wouldn't take again because of poor communication.
Professor Esteves is by far the best lab professor at Oakland University. He is very helpful during labs and grades fairly. Make sure to take any chemistry lab with professor Esteves.
I hated going to Lab but I looked forward to seeing Jose, make sure you choose a good group. I do agree communication is poor, he rarely emails you back even if your life depended on it but the class is doable, instructions unclear at times but doable. I loved speaking with him, extremely patient and kind with everyone, willing to help anyone.
This guy was great. Made labs extremely clear to perform and was incredibly understanding and compassionate. Take lab with him if you can, definitely the most fair and worthwhile lab prof.
This professor deserves the highest rate of all. He is the BEST professor at OU. He is very nice, funny, helpful, and caring professor. He helps you a lot if you get stuck and he never gets mad or angry at you. Truely, he is amazing.
He is very helpful in the lab and if you come prepared he will help you when you have confusion. He is very enjoyable as an instructor and makes the expectations for the class very clear. He is the best instructor I have had in OUs chemistry department.
I feel as though he's a great professor, but CHM 1040's lab did not really match up with what we learned in lecture throughout the semester. This might not be his fault, but the faculty definitely need to communicate better with one another. Overall, he was an easy grader, I never felt like I was cheated.
Professor Esteves is a nice guy and is usually pretty clear with his lectures. I had him for chem lab. He has office hours every week, but he is kind of hard to get ahold of through email. Posts relevant material and I feel like this class helped me understand chemistry better overall.
He's always there to help when you're confused on what to do. He's also really funny, so it made lab bearable. He does answer emails, but you have to state what class you're in so he knows what you're asking about.
Jose is a very bad professor. I do not recommend this class. He doesn't grade the papers himself, and every paper is graded completely different, does not respond to emails and opens and closes assignments on days we do not have class (thanksgiving day and fall break). He is very unprofessional if he even responds to your email and very unhelpful.
This is my second time taking chem to get a better grade and it was SO much better this semester. He helps prepare for the exams and really works with the students in order for everyone to succeed. Make sure you pay attention in class and go to SI if offered. If you pay attention you will do good on exams and well in the class.
Sometimes I was convinced he just liked to talk. Out of the 3 days a week that we had class, one of those days was completely taken up by going back over information- not more in depth, just saying what was on the slides again. I'm glad there was an SI section to go along with this class because he doesn't explain things well the first time around
Organic lab was different than any previous labs, and heavily focused on topics learned in the Organic II lecture. The lab was well-prepared and reports have clear guidelines to follow. Prof. Jose is a great instructor that's very approachable and provides demos at the start of each lab.
Wonderfully taught lab!
Hands down the best chemistry lab professor at Oakland University. If you're planning on taking a lab at OU, TAKE HIM!!!
Professor Esteves is the best lab professor you can take at OU. He is super calm and chill and doesn't hesitate to help you whenever you get stuck during lab. He's always there to answer your questions whenever you get lost. Highly recommend taking him if you have to take chem lab at OU.
If you have to take any chemistry lab make sure you choose Jose! He helps so much in lab if you are having a hard time, so don't be afraid to ask questions. There is a lot of group work in this lab and team assessments, so make sure you participate during experiments and help with the post-lab work.
Decent professor. He seemed nice and helps in the labs. You will have to work hard for your grade though. This is not an easy class. The experiments are long and if you mess up, you will have to redo parts of them. Make sure you get a good group because the labs are split up between you and your group. Quizzes/ prelabs were also somewhat difficult.
He's a very great professor!
This man is genuinely God's gift to the Chemistry department. I recommend taking every single class he teaches. I promise everyone not to listen to those who rate him poorly, they were just too incompetent for genuinely one of the best professors I have ever met in my life.
Great professor! He made a lab I was not interested in the slightest actually bearable.
The labs are easy and he is accessible to help during class if you need it. Reports are also simple: essentially just putting all the papers together - he doesn't make you type up formal reports. He often outlines how to make your graphs in the procedure. Very guided! Jose is a lot of fun and very respectful too! It's not hard to do well.
This was my second lab with Jose and he's great. Orgo is a pain for most, but don't be afraid of the lab! Reports are simple and straightforward (unlike Gen Chem labs). He and the TA were very helpful and the lab was sometimes even fun (surprising, I know). Pay attention to the format for reports, and to your experiment, and you'll be just fine.
I loved Jose, not only was he passionate about the material he allowed students to problem, solve and learn how to work well with others. The only real work you have to do outside of this class is the pre-lab and the post lab. It would also be beneficial brushing up on lecture notes. Overall, this is great Professor to take chemistry with!
Really cares about his students and their learning
Always helps when you need it. Nice guy.
He was great, not much work outside of class. Very helpful in the lab.
Jose is pretty nice and will help. The class itself is not too difficult as long as you do the pre-lab things and lectures. He grades the lab reports kind of harshly, but lets you look over them so that you can do better on the next lab reports. Be careful when cleaning the equipment, I broke 2 items while in this lab and you have to pay for them!
Great professor!
Professor Esteves-Villanueva was very kind and helpful but an extremely tough grader, especially since it was a new class and many people were not familiar with the material.
Jose is overall a very funny, and helpful guy when it came to the labs. He never made me feel dumb by asking questions BUT he is a very tough grader. Our moodle grades were a bit messy, I don't even know what is getting graded. If you have any questions make sure to ask when you see him, he is not good at responding to emails.
You will be working with a lab partner for the whole semester, so choose wisely!!! You learn so much being hands-on, like I came in every week having no idea how to do the experiment, but then I learn as I'm doing it. Lab reports were a little annoying, and I'm still not too sure how I kept getting high marks. Nice and endearing professor!!
Amazing professor and person. Labs were sometimes difficult but he was there to help. Really enjoyed him but the class was difficult.
This class is easily the highlight of my freshman year. The professor made an attempt to know everyone's name and was genuinely fun to be around. The ONLY negative thing I can say about the professor is his lack of will to respond to emails if the ones sent to him are indirect and that we were graded on group work (there was little individual work)
Very nice guy, me and my group got to know him before our lab ended, I would definitely take him again if I was given the opportunity. Kind of a tough grader but he will never make you feel dumb or stupid by asking questions, again I really recommend people to take his labs truly a great professor.
Jose is a great professor during lab. Always there to help and didn't make you feel stupid about it (and believe me, I asked a LOT of questions). Only thing is he doesn't always respond to emails but otherwise very approachable. Overall, this lab was way better than the gen chem labs and actually somewhat fun.
Jose was really good. However, he was quite harsh on grading sometimes, especially when it comes to sig figs. As long as you double check your lab reports and try your best, you will do well. It seems that he curves the ones that people don't do great on, which is nice. He is very nice and doesn't mind explaining things to students. Recommend him!
Awesome professor. The labs are super straight forward and explains things in full detail before we did anything. Hes a hilarious and super helpful guy. Even if you don't understand something after he explained it, he will still come by and help if needed. Definitely recommend
An outstanding professor with excellent teaching! Treats everyone with kindness and helps all students equally, best choice is registering any chem lab with him! - Wasabi
Funny, very understanding, and helpful! He explained everything before the lab and wasn't mean to us if we made mistakes. I am just very sad I wasn't able to retake him for chem 2 lab. Take him if you can!
AMAZING NO DOUBT IN MY MIND LOVE YOU JOSE
He was good and everything was easy. However he has a lot of ridiculous rules for turning in labs. For example he makes you turn it in online and in his mailbox because he "doesn't know which one he wants to grade it from", you can only use pens, if you scribble too much, you need to get a new paper and if you use white out, its an automatic zero.
If you want a great lab professor you can't go wrong with Jose. He is hilarious and does truly care about his job and his students. Labs can be tough but with Jose directions were clear cut and it was honestly pretty easy to do well as long as you were paying attention. Highly recommend.
An amazing professor! It was a breath of fresh air to have him as a Chem Lab Professor, as he obviously knows what he is doing and is willing to help if you ask for it. As long as you listen and follow the thorough and straightforward instructions, you will do very well in this class.
prof jose was really nice to my group, so i have a great experience with him. when we were doing one of the experiments wrong, he nudged us in the right direction. i only had trouble hearing him because i was in the back of the lab.
Professor Jose is AMAZING. I 10/10 recommend taking him for any course you can. He is great at replying to emails. I truly enjoyed being in his class and his lectures were amazing. He is the sweetest human and is willing to give feedback. Chem 2 is a hard course so put in the time, go to lectures and youll do great.
Best chem professor I've had at OU, no question. He explains things very clearly, gives good feedback, very understanding. I despised chemistry with a passion before, but this class gave me a slight change of heart. As long as you do the bare minimum of showing up, doing the lab reports, study a day or two before the final, an A should be easy.
JOSEEEE is one of the best professors at Oakland ever. His class was challenging because it was in the summer, but if you come into it ready to learn and locked in, you will be fine. Your whole grade is just exam and quiz-based. Make sure to come to the lecture, because there is no homework and he doesn't post the annotated notes. Take him plz!
Great professor again! The lab is fun, and he makes it very engaging! This was taken in the summer, so you usually have two reports every week, and it gets to be a lot, but if you have a good group, you will be fine.
Chem 2 during the summer was intense but Jose made it bearable. Going to all the lectures and reading the book helped a lot. Your grade is dependent on exams and quizzes, but he is very fair with scaling exams and grading them. If you can, take this class with him without hesitation.
Professor Jose was great. Chem 2 is hard but going to lectures and asking questions made it very engaging. I learned a lot from Jose and he is great at giving feedback when needed. I recommend anyone to take chem 2 with Jose.
Jose is amazing, he makes lab so fun. I would 100% take his lab again. He is a fair grader and doesn't make you feel bad for making mistakes which is bound to happen in chem lab. Places a big emphasis on safety and doesn't overcomplicate the material.
Chem department at oakland is awful, but this professor is absolutely amazing. He is very easy going and I genuinely enjoyed going to lab. He also has a bit of humor which I found funny, but some people were a bit sensitive. I am sad he wasn't available for chem 2 next semester, but would love to have him for all the chem classes I need to take.
Great professor, very funny. lowk devious making u do math in pen but wtv. would absolutely recommend.
Jose was an amazing professor probably my favorite one, he made funny jokes, and was overall very helpful. Not a harsh grader at all.
This professor is awesome! He is a funny and laid-back guy but has expectations for the class. Get your work done, follow lab instructions and rules, etc. He is very helpful when you need the extra help. 100% will be taking orgo lab with him if I can.
There is no better professor at OU than him. He truly cares for his students and really wants you to understand the material and help you improve. If I could take him again, I would. He tries to make the lab fun instead of stressful. As long as you do your work, show up, KNOW YOUR SIG FIGS AND UNITS, you will have an easy A in the class.
I literally love Jose. He actually made me enjoy Gen Chem 1 Lab. KNOW YOUR SIG FIGS PLEASE! Its known that the chemistry department at Oakland is horrible, but as long as you put in some effort in this class, your gonna get an easy A. Just make sure to do the team assesments after each lab, and you will get easy 5 points for each one,
