Know-it-all prof., very boring, tries but fails to make jokes. Chemistry is interesting; this guy makes it boring.
Man is very difficult to understand, very demanding, most students in his class were failing. wants you to know stuff when you have not taken before. 70/80 people in the class were failing; the average on tests was always failing about a 57...tells you something about him. We were always in the LAC.
Agree completely with everyone else. I will end up making an A, but after a few sleepless nights and many hours at the LAC. I hope Chem 2 isnt as bad as Chem 1 was. His lectures and notes help none on tests. nothing does. Do not take for org. lab either. STAY AWAY!!!
this teacher makes chemistry seem a lot harder than it actually is. i had to rely solely on what i remembered from high school in everything i did. it was very difficult.
Very picky on lab reports, expects the class to know what he knows, and ultra difficult tests and quizzes. Reading the handouts alone WILL NOT even get you 1/4 of the questions right.
As a person, he's a very nice man. As a teacher, he was a little hard to comprehend. His tests were far too complicated compared to the notes and lectures that he gave during class.
His class is pretty hard, but who said college was easy. I did however learn a lot and you could say he's a challenging professor. He helps students out a lot towards the end especially if he sees you struggling but working hard.
I had a lab with this professor. Though he is very strict and doesn't tolerate stupidity, Dr. Gutierrez is helpful when it comes to understanding material whether it be on the midterm, final, or post lab questions. Recommended if you like a challenge...if not, go with Chen!
He is hard to understand in class and even when you go to him for help he is hard to understand one on one. He seems to make the subject harder than it really is. I got a B on the first test and I am hoping to survive the semester.
Unclear and hard to understand. Not specific instructions on assignments, but very picky on the grading assignments.
kool teach
he's aright but not good enough to recommend
very cool teach
Class is fun,you have to study there is no way around it, if you want a breeze through class this isn't it. His objective is to get you to learn, if you have trouble understanding something go to his office and ask he's always helpful and it'll clear things up. :)
he is a great prof and teaches for chem majors not for those wanting an easy grade, and for those that are chem majors he is the best looking prof in the department. Very easy on the eyes
It is embarrassing to see college students pretending they're in high school. It is true that Dr. G. is really demanding. However, he does everything he can to help students get the best grade they deserve. If you want an easy grade, stay away. If you want to learn, Dr. G's class is the perfect place to be. You'll have to work hard, though.
organic with dr. gutierrez is difficult but take him if you really want to learn the material word to the wise, be on time and be prepared especially if you plan to take him for the lab as well
Notes were really useful and class was fun and informative at the same time. He gives tricky exams but overall, it was a great class
his temper gets the best of him. he intimidates his students. his class is overall a bad experience. his tests are somewhat odd. he should not teach. he does not have the patience for it.
Students complain that he is mean. That's probably the students who think they're still in high school and that a professor should allow them to pretend that it's OK to disturb the class. If you want to learn, go ahead and take his class. If what you're looking for is an easy grade, then take Macossay. An added bonus, he's hot!
Expect to work hard. Going to his office really makes a difference. He really helps those who take the class seriously. Expect to be called upon if he catches you doing stuff not related to class. Good guy overall
Very bad attitude and very hard to understand. He is rude and he doesnt care about you questions or concerns.. Unorganized and overall a waste of energy to attend his class. STAY AWAY FROM THIS GUY!!!
He is a good professor, and if you go to him for help he will ehlp you. He wants you to pass, but you need to study and do the review. Get the book "Organic Chemistry as a second Language" it helps.
Difficult class you have ti study hard. No book necessary but it helps. Study his notes from his powerpoint and his old tests. Read the notes before class so you actually understand what he's talking about.
i took this professor for the organic lab and he was very confusing. He expects you to know and understand the material. Hard grader with the pre and post labs. and for the midterm the highest grade was a 74. He did curve but overall tricky, hard, unorganized.
Great professor. Of course he expects you to know and understand the material! After all, that's why we're in college. Dr. Gutierrez really makes you think about the subject, do not expect to memorize only. It takes a lot of work but it's totally worth it, especially if you're taking the MCAT or decide to pursue grad school.
This professor is demanding but it actually helped me get to a level of excellence I didn't think I was capable of. I think that the people who complain the most are failing or not even attending his class. He certainly understands his subject and gives real life examples in class. Expect to work hard but also expect a lot of help from him.
Excellent professor overall. Masters the subject well and explains them clearly. Applies lessons to novel research purposes so that keeps me interested. While working for a global company, I was able to apply the lessons he taught. May seem intimidating but actually very approachable and helpful. Org Chem 2nd Language helps in this class.

Oh geez, some people told me NOT to take this guy and I was signing up for organic ,and he was the only teacher left! They were SO right, I don't learn ANYTHING in his class. Everything I learned was from the SI sessions, the SI leader teachers better than him! I studied like crazy and end up failing the 1st exam! He said it only had 2 hard Q...
He is a true professor. It's hard to find such quality teaching like Dr. Gutierrez'. He was not easy to understand because he treats students as being "intelligent." He expects students to be prepared for lectures and doesn't baby you, for those who like being lazy. Great professor, I highly recommend for those who plan on taking PCAT, MCAT..etc
At times, it may seem like he attempts to trick students, but it's far from the truth. Some of his questions on exams and quizzes come straight from examples in class. Make sure to take plenty of notes when he lectures and don't simply rely on his power points. Ask questions in class. Once most students drop he'll help everyone that stayed do well!
The ONLY, and I repeat ONLY, organic chemistry professor at UTPA that does not teach by memorization. Period. I was disappointed that I wasn't able to take him for organic II. If you've learned or will learn organic by memorizing, you won't stand a chance on the MCAT/PCAT. So take him and pay close attention. If you do, you'll come out of there actually understanding organic as opposed to simply having some reactions memorized.
I disagree with the reviews below and feel they were written by a single angry student hell-bent on destroying Dr. Gutierrez's reputation. This was one of the hardest earned Bs I've ever received, but I LEARNED. His notes are clear; SI sessions and the LAC are extremely helpful. YOU have to put in the effort to get the grade, this isn't HS anymore.
Do not take this professor if youre lazy or think that a good professor should treat you like you are not able to think on your own. People looking for an easy grade should also avoid him. He makes you think and is quite demanding but the overall experience is totally worth it. He is extremely smart and not a bad looking felow either
Highly recommended for pre-health profession students
Dr. Gutierrez is as cute as a chicken nugget and cooler than the other side of the pillow. He is also the best Organic Professor at the UTPA. He is the best, Dr. Gutierrez FTW!!!!
I think that each Organic Professor the UTPA has their strengths and weaknesses but speaking about Dr. Gutierrez I must say his strength is preparing you for the MCAT or PCAT. His course is hard, but lets face it Organic Chemistry is very hard. If you think it is easy you had a terrible professor. Dr. Gutierrez is good and cares about students.
Dr Gutierrez-Gonzalez isn't such an easy professor. But lectures are awesome. He rights everything on paper on overhead which makes it easy to learn since he goes step by step. Never like Org Chem but want to take Org Chem II w/ him!
Great professor. The class is difficult, but I'm actually learning rather than just memorizing for the tests. His lectures are interesting and you don't really need the book as he writes all of his own notes. Attendance is not mandatory, but it helps because he'll go over problems in class. Definitely take this class if you want to actually learn.
Best OrganicII Proffesor ever!! He teaches everything you need to successfuly passs your MCAT or PCAT. Hes very handsome and funny which makes it very easy to pay attention to him. He is VERY helpfull and is available for any questions you have. His tests are very short half written questions and half multiple choice. I highly reccomend him.
Took it during the summer with him, and he is a brilliant teacher for Organic Chemistry. He doesn't cover the whole scope of organic but just what you need for your MCAT. If you succeed in his class others that had different organic teachers will think your a genius! He makes a topic that must be self taught fun and so much easier! TAKE HIM!!!!!!!
Amazing professor. His course is very interesting. You need to study for exams but it's not anything he hasn't gone over. Going to class is highly recommended. He drops the lowest exam. I recommend him. I didn't take him for organic 1 so my first exam wasn't so great but I made it up on the final. Watch his tegrity videos! They are good reviews.
has to be one of the most attractive professors on campus! I really enjoyed his class, having come from a different organic 1 professor I was a really worried but it was totally worth it. SI sessions really help alot. He has been one of the best professors that I have taken! Do the work and study and you can get an A, no book required.
This man is the best professor to take for organic chemistry. He gives so many opportunities for one to succeed. He posts his lectures, notes, practice exams, and allows the use of models during exams. Incredible professor, I'm glad I took him. I think I'll take him for ochem2.
Dr. Gutierrez is an AMAZING professor! He is always willing to give his students all the resources they need to get the best grade possible! His lectures are never dull! Plus he's always available during office hours to answer any questions. I highly recommend him! You won't be disappointed:)
He is a great professor! He gives you all the necessary materials needed to ensure you pass. Just study the reviews and do the exercises and you will most likely do well in this course. His tests are tough so study hard and attend any SI sessions or him personally. He is always willing to help.
His lectures are clear and he answers every question you ask, even if you've asked more than once already. He throws in a joke or two which makes time go by faster. Always willing to help.
Mr. Gutierrez is a great teacher. The subject he teaches is difficult, but he explains the subject very well. The class is not easy, but getting an A is possible if you study and ask questions. I feel so lucky to have had a great teacher for a tough subject!
AMAZING PROFESSOR. ATTENDANCE IS NOT MANDATORY BUT IF YOU GO TO CLASS AND PAY ATTENTION HE EXPLAINS REALLY WELL AND TELLS YOU EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW TO PASS THE CLASS. YOU'LL ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND THE MATERIAL RATHER THAN MEMORIZE IT. HE PUTS EVERY CLASS ON TEGRITY, WATCH THE VIDEOS AND YOU SHOULD BE FINE.
Dr. Gutierrez is a really good professor. He teaches organic chemistry very very well and gives you EVERY opportunity to do well. Although he does this, the biggest deciding factor on what you will get in the class is how much work you put into it. If you want to do well, WATCHING TEGRITY CLASSES IS A MUST, GO TO LECTURES, & DO PRACTICE PROBLEMS.
Quizzes and Exam reviews are very elementary, but for the actual Exams, it's on a whole different level. Really tough! Advice, View Tegrity videos before coming to class so that you'll understand what he's talking about, Work on Exam reviews along after each lecture and Always pay attention & really listen to the little key points he mentions
He was a great help throughout the semester. However, he punished all the sections and closed the tegrity recordings for one student cheating. I felt this was an unfair move to pull the week before finals, yet I understand why he did it. Study his materials and look up work sheets. You really have to work for an A.
Probably the best professor at the university, good teaching method, explains material well. Drops lowest grade, 4 exams, quizzes, te gritty recordings and practice exams.
He is a great professor. But for me he was not clear at all I was lost the whole time and that is not like me. I learned more ochem from chem 1 than with him. I found his tests extremely difficult they were nothing like his printed notes or lectures. If you need more in depth explanations and slower pace find someone else.
The people who are salty about how bad they did weren't well prepared. That's it. All you need is an 88 (2301) or an 85(2302) to get an A. He won't ask anything he didn't go over in class. He posts notes at the end of the week, so I just payed attention to what he was saying and showed up having preread. I got a 97 and 95 on O Chem 1+2. Just prep.
Honestly, just go to class and do the practice tests.
Other students love him, but I'll be more than happy to never see him again. I get all A's and with him I did exceptionally horrible. I worked for my grade but his teaching style was very difficult for me to adapt to. His accent isn't that Bad but there were words that I would spend hours trying to reveal. Take him if you are naturally good at chem
Great professor really nice, I understood mostly everything throughout the class. His tests are difficult, but nothing impossible. I ended up with a B, but thats my fault. I could have and should jave prepared better.
he is a great professor he was very understanding honestly make time and go to his office he explains it over and over if u need it !!!! DONT BE SCARED if you need the mcat this is the proffesor to take!!!!!!!
He is intimidating but if you show him you care about your grade you will do fine. Don't be afraid to ask questions, he might make a face when you do but it isn't because he thinks the question is dumb it's because that's just his face lol. I would definitely take him again. He breaks down the material so you can understand.
Dr. G is a great professor. He is very straightforward with what to expect, everything he lectures is the material you need to know to ace the exam. Its not that hard and you will learn if you put in the time. His grading scale is flexible and is always in favor of the students. His exams aren't hard and he always there for his students.
He is a good teacher, but you certainly HAVE to read before class. He expects you to know everything he is lecturing., so he goes like really fast. I got lost!! His tests are really hard, he drops the lowest. Final is NOT mandatory. If you want to learn he is your professor, if you want easy A he is not!!
People who say he's hard are just lazy & don't work hard enough to get the grade they want. My advice, pay really close attention in class, take only important notes& write the rest of the class notes that he posts on BB at the end of the week. Make sure you take time to understand everything. GO TO SI! Such an amazing professor, very knowledgeable
Another useful tip! He does take fast notes in class so don't write EVERYTHING because he does upload the class notes on BB. If you do try to write all the notes during class, you'll just be focusing on trying to write everything down and not actually paying attention to what he's saying. That's why I suggest to write down only important key notes
Dr. G is awesome !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pay close attention to his LECTURES, POWERPOINTS, and the Tegrity videos that he post online and you should be fine. It is definitely possible to get an A in his class but you have to work for it. Just like for anything you want in life. I only got a B because I procrastinated and studied the night before
Dr. Gutierrez is an AWESOME professor. He moves really fast, but you will learn from his class. He uploads tegrity videos of his lectures and is always available to meet outside of class if you're unclear about anything. There are four exams, but your lowest exam grade will be dropped. No quizzes or homework.
One of the worst professors i have ever taken. Speedy lecturer and messy writer. He doesnt care if the class is keeping up or not. His exams are nothing like what he teaches or like his practice exams. They are way way harder. Even after some of us spoke to him about this, he didnt care! I used to love chemistry before i took him. AVOID THIS PROF!!
He drops an exam, but you need to study, but his tests are mainly focused on his lectures both online and offline, and I want you all to remember, HE IS NOT TRYING TO TRICK YOU! It may seem like it, but he's not. He's actually trying to give points, he also may seem scary, but he's not. Just study and practice and I am damn sure you will get an A.
Gives 4 exams & drops the lowest one. The final isn't comprehsive and doesn't read off powerpoints. Instead, he actually teaches the class using molecular models, writing notes, and by giving problem examples. Don't focus on writing the notes in class though. He posts his notes online along with his tegrity video lectures which are also helpful.
4 Exams, drops the lowest one. If you're satisfied with your grade after the 3rd exam, there's no need to take the final. The class itself is not hard, it just requires practice , like any other applied science course. He's really helpful and if for some reason you feel like he's going too fast, he post his tegrity videos on blackboard.
Dr. Gutierrez is a really intelligent professor. However, his notes are all over the place, and he does not really know how to explain difficult concepts and often lectures at a fast pace. You had to know and really have studied the material before coming to class to understand the material. One of the hardest and frustrating classes I've taken.
Do not take him! over more than half of the class got F's! His notes are all over the place. If you are not into chemistry you will have a hard time with him.
I was excited for this course, but now I am incredibly glad that it is finally over. Nothing against him, he is brilliant. I don't know how else to say this, but I probably wouldn't take another one of his classes. Course grade is 3 exams, grading policy is helpful. There is no supplemental material. In my opinion, he wasn't the best at explaining.
Lecture Heavy, Test Heavy. Brilliant prof, professional, not very compassionate or sympathetic. Textbook not mandatory, but recommended. Get ready to WORK. 3 exams + Final, lowest of all 4 dropped (or test out of final if happy w first 3 exams. Each exam 22 Qs (2 for extra credit). Sequence of notes understandable, but messy writing.
Tegrity lectures from 2015 (old). Want current examples? go to class. Otherwise material/principle almostsame. Book recd, but he doesnt use it or PPT! Read EVERY chapte, pics/details helped me a lot; NOT for tests. No trick Qs per se, more like exceptions to the rule/principle. HW/practice quizzes 20-50% of exam. Rest of exam? GOOD LUCK :(
HW, green little book, & quizzes for practice, not graded. They KIND OF helped, but they were easier compared to difficulty of exam. Exams are about 25% theory, 75% chemical / molecular compound / math / example solving. Comprehensive final less than 50 questions. Doesnt slow down his pace, so KEEP UP/GET IT THE 1ST TIME or drop class or fail.
You get exactly what you put in, this class wasn't meant to be easy, so actually dedicating more than the day before the test to study is crucial. Every aspect of the lecture is straight forward and fast-paced, so unless you make an effort to speak out during class on parts you do not understand, or visit his office hours, you will fall behind.
Dr. Gutierrez is an awesome professor. He is very clear cut about what he expects in class. He gives Tegrity lectures from 2015 that supplement the lectures he gives in class. Taking OCHEM is already a given - you WILL need to study and the grade wont be given to you. 4 tests, lowest dropped. I dropped ochem once and this time I got the A.
Dr. Gutierrez is a tough professor. He goes through he lectures so quick, and then on exam day he has like an extra day where he reviews, but no one understands him in the lessons, so no one knows what questions to ask. His tests are not easy but manageable if YOU LISTEN TO THE RECORDINGS! Do his quizzes that he puts up and you might just pass.
horrible class just do not take him, take another professor or do not take it at all.
Regarding his hybrid classes, 95% of the material comes from his videos recorded from 2014-2019. You meet once a week and expect you to have seen all videos regarding the lesson over the course of the previous week. No mandatory HW, there are quizzes (webcam), and the tests are very similar to HW, use that to your advantage. 4 tests, lowest is 10%.
Lectures are poorly recorded, if you go to class he still moves way too quickly and expects you to know everything from the recordings. First exam average was below 40, and when he curved everyone still failed. Unless you are a chemistry major/studying for MCAT, do not take his class for credit. - Student who has A's in all other chemistry classes.
1) Almost never gives extra credit, 2) A bit rude, 3) talks really fast, 4) only gives 8 quizzes (1.875% of the grade), with 3 exams (25%) and the lowest scored exam (10%), 5) No final or mid term, 6) Gives practice exercises that are NOTHING like the quizzes or exams, & 7) most of the class drop out halfway through the semester. I failed BAD!
Hes a good teacher, I was able to follow along with his lectures, and his pre-recorded lecture videos and notes. I felt like I was learning a lot, and even through the exercises, I was having a breeze. The hardest part of this class is the quizzes and tests. The questions are written to be tricky, the devil is always in the details. Study, or fail
He is a greatly condescending professor who teaches extremely fast and truly makes you suffer through this course. I relied very heavily on Chad's Prep and Khan Academy's resources to pass this course. I'm not sure how many other professors teach ochem 2 but if you're able to take another Professor, DO IT!
This professor was extremely difficult. The only grades for this course were the 4 exams and quizzes. This was extremely hard to pick up because there were no homework assignments to balance it out or even practice on the subject. I would not take this professor again
Gives lecture as if he's giving a discourse to professionals instead of students hearing the content for the first time. When questions are asked in class, he is very condescending and responds along the lines of "I already covered that" instead of clarifying. Grades come from 4 exams and a 10 pg paper. Didn't learn a thing.
Going into his course I felt completely confident in my chem skills, but did horribly on two of my exams. I dedicated an immense amount of time studying to pick my average back up to at least a B. Somehow I managed an A just he provides plenty of opportunities to raise your grade.
Warning There is no homework for practice, and you have to watch videos he uploads from years ago. He has exercises and slides but I feel his notes are all over the place. His exams and quizzes are way harder than the exercises and his videos. I went to tutoring and office hours and didn't see myself progressing in his way of teaching.
No hate to the professor, he's extremely knowledgeable in chem but I had such difficulty with this class your grade is based on 4 exams and a couple quizzes. nothing else... He teaches like its a refresher, and doesnt really explain anything, just writes it all out. take him if you know chem already, i usually get A/B grades, i just couldnt do it.
4 exams and 8 quizzes, lowest exam/quiz is dropped. Attendance not mandatory, if you go you MUST participate. Only provides low quality videos/worksheets. Practice exams were posted and used during exam, but the exams had different materials/more difficult. Tutoring is provided, but is ex-student of professor. He has HIGH expectations, do NOT take!
Challenging course, but Prof. Gutierrez provides plenty of opportunities to improve your grade. Recorded lectures and unstuck AI helped me stay on top of the material. Not easy, but doable with dedication.
He was very interactive during lab but his midterm and final were very difficult. Questions were worded made you second guess yourself. take him if you want to be challenged but if you want a good grade don't take him. not easy.
Attendance is extra-credit; however, I would still show up as he goes over important material that's not featured in the lecture videos. Dr. Gutierrez is an efficient professor as you must learn the reactions, not only through rote memorization, but more so application. You're doing it right if you think you haven't studied enough on test day.
A Lab course. Pre-Lab quizzes and post-Lab quizzes are due before the next class. A mid-term and a Final are worth 30% of your grade. Questions on post-lab and tests are worded to make you second-guess yourself if you did not heavily study or pay attention. No extra credit, not sure about curving grades. In the lab, super interactive, will help.
do not recommend at all lol. no homework, no extra credit, and tests are 85% of your grade.....Barely teaches in class, and relies on YOU to watch some long boring videos at home instead. Explains material as if its common sense or already known and doesn't bother explaining. No phones/laptops allowed in class. Doesn't allow make-up exams as well.
I wasn't even supposed to have this professor as my Orgo2Lab instructor but something happened and he had to sub in. I will forever be grateful that I had him only for lab and not for the actual lecture. He said that we don't get a study guide for our tests because we should already know what will be on them. Never take this professor if not needed
Dr. Gutierrez will make you work for your grade as he only has quizzes and exams, no homework, no curve or extra credit beyond attendance. He is more traditional compared to many other professors, and his teaching style reflects that. If you have to, be mentally prepared to study, attend office hours, and seek tutoring.
I prefer studying for exams and quizzes than having homework and assignments because it forces you to actually learn. Looking at his study guides was the biggest help. 15% quizzes and 75% exams. Drops lowest quiz grade and lowest exam grade becomes 10% of the 75%
