Martin's approach to teaching is different, but effective. You won't do well if you don't pay attention, do the HW, and study. If you do, passing is a breeze.

He is a great professor and definetly wants his students to learn. He does not tolerate any kind of lazy student, therefore he won't be kind to you if he sees that you are not trying. Overall a quality professor.

great teacher. he speaks spanish completely in his classes which is a big help. i learned a lot in his class. if you study hard on the tests, you will do fine. i really enjoyed his class, it can just be a lot of work.

He's so much fun, the most fun Spanish teacher I've ever had. Not easy, but as long as you do the homework you'll get things just fine. Mostly, he makes things not boring and it's easier to learn that way. I reccomend him if u want to really learn.

A very good teacher and i was happy to have him. He expects you to study so he won't let you get away with slacking off. I actually learned more about grammer in this class then i did in any of my highschool classes. He has a weird sense of humor but i liked him a lot. Be prepared to be 'put on the spot' so be sure to study those verbs!!!

Great teacher. You actually learn. Do the homework, it is not busy work it definitely helps. Really wants you to understand the material. Go to class. You miss one day and you are screwed. No text book, so take notes. Take his class if you want to learn. Keep up with the material, there is no way you will not pass

Martin was a very cool teacher. Very funny and if you don't understand, he will come over and try to help you. DO NOT MISS ONE DAY OF CLASS. You miss any lectures, you're pretty much screwed the rest of the semester. I missed about 3 and failed because I was behind. If motivated, than this is Spanish class that I recommend.

Great teacher, there should be more teachers like him at COC. However, I did not agree with the history part of the class. I did not think it would be required in the class.. since its a language class. but there will be history questions on the mid term and the final... as well as the quizzes. so if you take this class, study the history!

I just finished his Spanish 101 class. I earned an A in the class. He challenges students to strive for success. He told everyone to study 8 hours a week in oder to do well, which I did and it was worth it. If you are willing to put in the work, you will do fine, those who hate him just didn't do the work necessary for a COLLEGE 4 unit course.

ok, the previous ratings are not true...well, to some degree. For me, the professor was helpful in that he set up office hours for me to have practice spanish speaking sessions one on one. His quizzes and exams are only multiple choice and 2 oral exams. I found His website with printouts be more helpful than having a textbook. Saved me mucho dinero

Prof Martin was AWESOME! He is really energetic and engaging. He pretends to be mean during his oral exams, but then grades them easy. Pay attention/study and you'll get a good grade. Also, be on time or you might MISS a quiz.

As far as some of these other comments about his personality...I thought he was hysterical! I always enjoyed going to class because of his jokes and conversations. And I found him to be really accommodating and compassionate. Compared to some of the other bad Spanish teachers at COC, he's great.

He is a great man and a great professor. He shakes up the blase educational system we are so accustomed to. If you want the easy A, don't take him. If you want to experience quality education, take him. If only there were more teachers like him. He's not easy, but who said life is supposed to be. He shows you how to be academically tough.

In the beginning of the semester I thought didnt like this class. I came to realize that in order to really learn Spanish Prof. Martin has to be strict. If you attend the classes, study, do your homework and take the quizzes you should do fine in this class. It is hard work but the end justifies the means.

If you're looking for an easy 'A', DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! However, if you want to learn Spanish, this is the class for you. If you can put in the effort for this class the payoff will be well worth it. He is one of the best professors I've had during my time at COC, but also one of the hardest. ¡Más difícil, más mejor!

Average Teacher. Does explain thoroughly but do not expect to cruise through this class. If you are a lazy student who isn't serious, leave the space for someone who is trying to learn. You will do fine as long as you study the vocab (flash cards are graded, usually 20-40 per class) & grammar. There is 1-3 pages homework due each class, simple.

Overall a good, funny interesting teacher. He explains materials well. Make sure you do all your homework and are there on time to complete test, every week! Weekly test are very important. Not an easy A class, but you'll learn a lot!!! Enjoy!!! (:

He is a really nice guy and helpful. Some times he just cross the line telling the history of things, but is is just a minor thing. He won't fail you miss more than twice, you just need email him and let him know you are not a flake. Mostly ppl who wrote bad things here are lazy and do not study. So I would really recommend him.

He means what he says at the beginning of the semester. If you keep up with the work, study hard, you will learn Spanish. If you think you don't have to put in the time he recommends (2 hours per lecture hour), don't take the class. He is very interesting and takes time to give you history/culture of Spanish speaking countries.

Students who want an easy class don't like this teacher because he expects them to do real work, but he is REALLY good and he cares. He is funny too. Take him if you want to learn, but look elsewhere if you are not willing to work hard. That's the honest truth.

Great class and great instructor for those willing to put in the time required to learn a foreign language. No big tests worth a lot of points, only weekly quizzes. It's more testing, but there's less to study for each test and if you don't do well on a quiz, it does not have a huge impact on your grade. It helped me to stay on top of things.

Enjoyed him for Span 101, took 102 and enjoyed even more. Must do the homework and study in order to succeed in the class, but if you do, you will find yourself more comfortable with speaking and writing Spanish. You really learn in this class. He also makes it interesting with videos and stories about Spanish speaking countries and their culture.

Great class. I like the practice sample practice exams that provide you with a study guide according to your specific results. Funny instructor. Makes comments on cultural and historic stuff that makes the class more interesting. He shows videos about traditions, art, and places of interest too.

I had problems getting to school a few times during the semester because my car kept breaking down. Once, I even missed a test because of it. Professor Martin took the time to find out what was happening with me, helped me catch up, and even let me make up the test I missed.

I got a bad grade for my homework but just do your homework and itll be easier for you in the tests! Your final is on paper and a interview so make sure you ask for help for pronouncing !

Took this class as a native Spanish speaker and learned so much. This was my first online course and don't have any complaints. Dr. Martin is very accessible, gives great feedback and answers all of your questions. There was weekly assignment's and reading to do but all due by midnight Sunday. If you want to improve your Spanish, take this class!

He was by far one of the best professors I've ever had at COC. He is very patient and takes the time to really get to know his students. The class was a lot of fun and the coursework wasn't that difficult as long as you take the time to study and practice signing outside of class. Spanish is tough! He has a good lecture laid out. I would have preferred for HW to be due one day a week but instead of Wednesdays and Fridays. Other then that the class was good. Textbook is online. No extra credit.

Spanish is definitely a tough language to learn! Professor Martin however explains and clears everything thoroughly! His lectures are very explanatory, straight forward, and he always emphasizes the importance of studying and practice! Even being in the back I was always pulled forward with his love for Spanish and the history, it's never a bore!

I took Span for Heritage speakers online. Dr Martin is FANTASTIC. There is A LOT of homework but it's not difficult. I work full time so having reminders and a great calendar helped although I did forget to turn in an assignment that I did too far in advance. He is very kind, very knowledgeable, and a very fair grader.

One of the best teachers on this campus. Doctor Martin is super funny, teaches you beyond Spanish, and loves what he does. I'm not a big fan of Spanish, but I would take his class again because he makes learning fun. At first it was really difficult, because we had 15hrs of hw but after that, there's rarely any.

While the homework is very long, it is all online. Additionally, the exams are all online so they are not difficult. He cares that you participate and try, but by doing the homework, you will get an A. Amazing teacher, highly recommend.

I took this course in the Spring semester of 2020 and I'm so glad I did. I only had a basic knowledge of the language, but still learned so much from this class. I felt more confident with my speaking and writing within a matter of a few weeks. This class is manageable online, but be prepared to read, write, and speak your Spanish. Great professor!
