I ended up in this class because the one I wanted to sign up for was full. I'm glad it was. Something about this professor that stands out. I had to earn my grade, but I learned a lot I can actually use. He's all about you learning, not just being another class. He is also willing to help when you need it. Take this class!
I really liked this class! I had no idea what to expect but I learned so much. He really tries hard to make sure you understand the material. He cares about his students and wants them to grow in the process. I have no regrets. Too bad he doesn't teach other classes I can take, I would in an instant!
I really enjoyed his theories class. The material was at times difficult but he really cared that everyone had a good understanding about what was being taught before we moved on. His tests are fair... you definitely have to study but gives plenty of extra credit opportunities. Such a nice guy and funny too! You won't be disappointed!
He's a cool guy and very understanding, if you do the prep guides and some studying for his tests you will do just fine. He's very open to helping.
Professor Martinez is definitely well educated in his field and he brings a touch of philosophy to the psychology class. the text he uses along with his teaching methods really make the material easier to grasp. He uses great examples and you can tell he genuinely cares about how his students are performing. He is there for anything you may need.
He is one of the few umass professors that actually knows what he is talking about. He does go on a few tangents mostly about food and burgers, but he really gets the class going. His tests are wordy but he gives a study guide and lets you correct one of them. If you put in the effort and try to learn you will learn.
love this guy!! great teacher, funny and very passionate about his field, behavioral analysis specifically. truly cares about teaching. i'm taking theories of learning with him next semester. he vehemently hates the textbook, but study what he tells you to and you'll be be fine. few tests+homework. final is not cumulative. recommended!
Awesome professor. I would highly recommend him to any student who is interested in learning and behavior or psychology in general. Tests aren't just to test your memory in his class, he really wants his students to understand the material. Very easy to talk to and not boring at all. Prep guides you discuss in groups & 10 EASY quizzes
He is one of the best professors I have had yet. The material is dense but he is so good about explaining it in a relatable way. He's nice, very eager to help if you have any problems or questions. Do the homework and show up for class and you'll be fine. His tests aren't too bad, usually has an essay question which he sends a week in advance.
He tends to go off sometimes on tangents which distracts from the class material, but he compensates for it by making his exams completely fair and only on the things you did actually review in class. He gives you test essays ahead of time which he'll give you feedback on if you email him your response early enough. Super helpful and caring.
Amazing professor. He has issues sticking to the syllabus, but in the end he makes sure you learn something worthwhile from his class. I found the class pretty easy, there weren't many assignments and all you had to do to get a good grade on midterms was read sections of the text based on a study guide
By far one of the best professor I've ever had. He really cares about his students and will do anything he can to make sure everyone understands the material. He didn't just stand up there and lecture, he made the material interesting by using hilarious real life examples to catch your attention. I would take another class with him in a heartbeat.
Professor Martinez is one of the best professors I have had. He is extremely passionate about the work he is doing and down to earth. He really makes you think in his class, which is wonderful. I cannot stress how highly I recommend him.
Great professor, you will learn in his class for sure. He goes of topic sometimes but he always makes lectures fun, spends the first 15-20min showing you funny videos on youtube. Tests are hard, you will NEED to study. 3 exams. Occasional hw that he does not collect - you just go over the hw in groups and sign a paper at the end for credit.
I loved this class. Jose REALLY loves what he teaches and its super obvious. He cares about his students and really wants to help you understand. He can come on a bit head strong and he goes off on random tangents sometimes but its part of the charm of what you're learning in the class. I would take this class again 100 times over!
I took Into to Psych Honors Section. Jose is a very funny guy but his class is a bit unstructured. He goes off topic a lot but in a sense, it's just to make you learn the concept more. He's a great teacher with a lot of knowledge and you will come out knowing something. Show up to class, powerpoints won't help, exams are impossible w/out studying.
An amazing professor with a lot to offer. His focus isn't about cramming information down your throat, but making sure that you understand and are able to apply the material. Very dedicated to his field and the research behind it. Definitely a good choice of a class. Also, knows some really good food spots. Ask him about the cow tongues.
You know what they say, right? The best psychologist in the world is found inside of you. In this class you will be asked to step back a little and look at the world around you. It is an easy A though, but this is not your regular pysic class. The experience, knowledge and appreciation to psychology its what makes up for the grade. You will learn.
Professor Martinez is an unbelievably hilarious ,intelligent and passionate instructor! Unlike most professors who go by the book for their teachings, his unique approach to the subject, paired with insight and dedication will leave you with a deeper appreciation for psychology.
Jose is a certified gangster of psychology, I once saw him slay a dragon. But in all seriousness he is one of the best professors I have ever had. I did manage to get a D his class the first time, but that was entirely my own fault. And despite that I came out of it knowing far more about my own life. If I could take him every semester I would.
Prof. Martinez is the best professor I ever had. One of the most influential teachers they really inspired me to take up applied behavior analysis. He geniunly cares about his students and really cares about them learning something, I wish there was more like him, he cares about us learning something that we could apply to our everyday lives.
offers the passion and caring for his students to promote growth and progression in your career. He provides behavioral knowledge to teach you the values of scientific psychology. Overall he is a fantastic role model as to what other professors should strive to be, and as a result should inspire you to be the best student you can be.
He's a very nice guy. Somewhat political in his lectures (read as very) but he really wants all his students to take something away from his class.
Jose is a wonderful professor that really cares about your well-being and success not just as a student but as a person. His class isn't easy per say in that you do have to work for your grade, but he makes guidelines clear. Book is a MUST! More important than grades, you will learn to be open to different ideas, an invaluable insight.
Jose is one of the greatest professors I have ever had. Attendance is not taken, but he notices who comes to class and who doesn't, and will sometimes give you quiz credit just for showing up. Super inspirational guy, and connects the lessons to current events.
Prof. Martinez makes the class very enjoyable. He is clear on what he is expects. Homework is not consistent but you will need the textbook for the homework. Exams are easy if you pay attention and do the homework. You need to study just not for tons of hours. He also provides extra credit with the exams and during class.
Professor Martinez is the BEST! He truly cares for the students. He wants you to learn and cares for your grade. Quizzes and exams are easy, as long as you read the material and attend class. I took 2 classes with him and I would definitely taking him again if I could. Simply amazing!
I've had the pleasure of taking Dr. Martinez for 2 classes as a Gen Ed and I have taken a LOT away from his courses. Overall, he is a good lecturer and talks about relevant events before starting class. The material overall is not too hard (need book) but attending the lectures and being engaged in class will almost guarantee you a good grade.
One of the best professors I have had the pleasure of coming across for my theories of learning class. Truly inspirational and works with you if you show a passion for the field.
Great professor. Makes class very fun and can tell he's very passionate. The class is not an easy class, especially if you don't keep up with the reading or the work. Would take class with him again!
I loved this class. Took a class with Jose before and decided to take another one. Good decision on my part. I love everything that Jose has to teach and he is so passionate about everything that he says. It is fascinating material and honestly think that he's influenced my future career with his lectures. Would take any day!
Professor Martinez is articulate and intelligent, cares about all of his students on an individual and honest level, and inspires passion in those he teaches for learning and for changing the world around him. One of the most excellent, captiviting, educational, and entertaining classes Ive ever taken. Beyond phenomenal.
professor Martinez was one of the best professor I have ever had. His lectures are very entertaining and engaging. His class was fun and I actually enjoyed going to every class. Hes caring and very personable and wants all his students to do well. Easy A if you show you care and pay attention. Take him if you have the chance you wont regret it.
He is an amazing professor. I laughed so much in his class! He is so down to earth. He is a fair grader and gives you as much credit as he can it ensure you get a good grade. He tries to relate what he is teaching to real life for you so even if you don't like the topic you can take something away from his class. I would recommend him to anyone.
World-class guy, wonderful professor. His class is super engaging and very frequently uses the material to pertain to important life and character lessons. I was recommended by a psych major to take this as a non-psych major and learned a tremendous amount. The book is important as he can transform class into stimulating debates. Highly recommend
Jose is one of the best professors I've had. Hilarious, brilliant, fun. His lectures are dynamic and engaging. You will learn a ton from this guy if you pay attention, attend all lectures and do the reading. Also, if you really attend to the messages he puts in his lectures, you might get more out his class than you ever imagined getting.
This was my first psych class after transferring. I didn' really know much about psychology all i knew is that I loved it. This class is something I wont forget taking and might have pointed me in a behavioral concentration. The professor is a stand up guy that is filled with passion for his subject. And is always there for any student who needs it
Really glad I took this class before leaving UML. Jose is passionate about his teaching and uses a unique teaching style to make his students see things from a different perspective. His lectures are insightful and he tries really hard to make discussions worthwhile. Just show up to class every day, use his study guides to study & youll do fine.
Joses an amazing professor and I am truly going to miss him, I definitely learned a lot from him. Be ready to do the work he assigns because it isnt a lot but it is very important if you want to pass the tests. Jose cares a lot about his students and he def wants the best for the future of psychologists in tomorrows society. I highly recommend!
I'm going to miss his class. He is an inspirational professor who actually cares about how we learn and what we learn.
This professor was so life changing and eye opening to everything. After this class I was able to help myself through self issues and took so much valuable information from this course. Everyone should take his class because you will actually take something of value when it is over. I never worried about my grade and just got to enjoy learning.
Jose is an awesome professor who really cares about your learning. He's a really smart and funny guy who is easy to talk to and ask questions. His class wasn't too hard, there was only two graded exams plus the final, and the homework wasn't graded but really helps you with the exams if you do it. If you take a psych class, take it with Jose!
Jose is absolutely my favorite professor at UML. His behavior class is always interesting and has played a huge role in my decision to pursue behavior analysis as a career. He is a very fair grader who does not give out a lot of assignments and always sends out topic lists for exams. He is a truly great person and I can't recommend him enough.
This class was overall boring, but it was manageable. He is a very caring professor, and it is important to him that he teaches you many things. He is very lecture heavy and it can be tiring, but of you do the work you will get a good grade
Jose is a great guy. He can be political sometimes but he's very respectful of opposing views and encourages speaking your mind. He takes the material seriously. If you have a bias against B.F. Skinner, prepare to reconsider. His lectures are compelling and the grading is fair. If you read the textbook and participate, you'll likely get an A.
Jose was an amazing teacher! He has such a caring heart about his students and the topics he teaches in class. The tests are difficult but as long as you study the material he provides, it is not bad. He really cares about his student's success and I would recommend him to anybody. And you'll never be bored during lectures!
Professor Martinez was a standout Professor during an otherwise detached and institutionalized semester. He repeatedly brings thought-provoking and slow burning topics to the table for discussion that keep you thinking way after class is over. Get the textbook. Pay attention. And show up to class. Truly a breath of fresh air.
A good man and passionate teacher. If there is an injustice in the world he feels you should be concerned about, Dr Martinez will tell you. He is passionate about the world the the role you play in it and how Behavioral Psych can help you approach it. Professor Martinez WILL notice if you are not in class regularly and it WILL affect your grade.
Jose's class has been my absolute favorite thus far at UML. He is SO funny and flexible with his class. I learned so much about behavior psychology, and he is truly passionate about the subject. His only homeworks are book Q's, and each question is important- he never gives busy work. I wish every professor was like Jose, and I'll miss his class!
He is very lively! The class is very entertaining and he keeps you intrigued. Participation and communication is important to him. I really loved him!
Literally super hilarious, and laid back. Pretty clear what is expected every week, his exams are a little heavy, but I definitely recommend them.
I cannot overstate how much Prof. Martinez has changed my life. He's funny, intelligent, and super passionate about what he does. I enjoyed every minute of my classes with him - they really should be the standard psychology students are held to, but anyone can benefit from his perspective. We need more behavior analysts in the world like him.
Jose is easily one of the greatest professors I've ever had. Farthest thing from "just another lecture class". He'll make you laugh hard & think hard, and incorporates so many life lessons into his lectures. Definitely one of those professors whose class experience is one you'll carry with you!!
Put's me to sleep, voice very calm, needs to start a podcast. So funny. Not political at all. Needs to learn more music theory. Wished this class never ended. Literally, like if all my classes were just theories of learning over and over.
Professor Jose is an amazing instructor! He always made the class meaningful no matter the topic. He has great taste in music and a real gem to be around. Make sure to show up to class ready to learn lessons that you will remember for years to come. Awesome Professor and wonderful human being!
TAKE HIM. His lectures are amazing and informative. He occasionally shows videos. which might seem pointless at times, but they have a meaning TRUST ME. you read, do prep guides, discuss them in class, and turn in feedback forms on confusing stuff or how he can improve. Very accommodating! Expect group conversations and maybe a paper and quizzes!
Jose is a really good person. He cares very much about his students and people in general. He is very lecture heavy and goes off on a lot of tangents but they are usually interesting ones. Over all I saw take his class if you want an interpersonal professor and dont mind getting off track. There is also a good amount of HW, but its not hard.
Im so tired of recommending Joses classes to psych majors and anyone else who will listen to me. His behavioral courses radically redirected my career path and my perspective of what psychology could be as a science. Jose is an incredible person and professor who will nurture your educational growth with humor and passion. Please dont miss out!
This man is incredible! Talk about his inspirational lectures. You will learn so much from him. Highly recommend taking ALL of his classes if you can, get ready to really learn.
I am amazed to see all these outstanding reviews because I completely disagree. He was the most unorganized professor I have ever had. We had to email him every single week begging to post our homework and he would post it at 11:30 the night before it is due. I did not receive a single grade the entire semester. he is extremely political
Loved this class! Learned a lot about human behavior. He did change the syllabus so we wouldn't worry so much about grades and would concentrate on learning. He was fair in his teaching and encouraged us to reach out if needed. He is very accommodating and understanding and cares a lot about using psychology to help. Thank you Jose!
Professor Martinez is a great professor and you can tell he cares deeply about his students! He is very knowledgeable on behavioral psychology and has some very interesting life stories. He wants all of his students to succeed and is very understanding if you need to submit work late. Attendance is not mandatory, however it is encouraged!!
Professor Martinez is a great professor. He really cares about behavioral psychology and cares about teaching his students. His classes may not be mandatory but they are recommended and worth going to. He accepts late work so getting a good grade isnt hard. He makes class interesting with fun videos and stories. Highly recommend his classes!
Clearly that one person who left the bad review did not listen to his inspirational messages that he gave out about todays society. Everything is behavior. And this man knows it all. His lectures are insightful and he goes into behaviorism regardless of the topic. He truly and deeply cares about his students and listens to each students stories
His messages were more than any student could ever ask for in a typical lecture. He truly cares about all of his students and makes every lecture worth attending with what he has to say and present. Stay on top of your prep guides and study for exams regularly, and also be open with everything he has to say in class and don't distract yourself.
Jose is very caring of his students. He's funny but also passionate about his work. I highly recommend Professor Martinezs Theories of Learning class even if youre not a Psychology major!
He has a hard time responding to emails but is more than willing to chat before or after class. The exams are easy if you do the homework you will pass. He offers a lot of support and is very understanding. His lectures are long but interesting. He keeps you engaged.
Your life to be changed. Weekly hw's called prep guides. Tests are multiple choice with 1 OR. Material is alot to understand but if you pay attention in class he makes u understand. NO GRADES ON BB. You wont know your grade so good luck. He loves this class. There is a free PDF of the textbook if you look it up. Hard to reach on email
I understand he cares about his students and desires the best for them, and he is pretty chill and funny outside of his teaching. However, this class is mainly you teaching yourself the material in the best way you can otherwise you might not be up to speed in the class. Participation and attendance matters to him so do not miss a class.
Jose is nice and funny, but he isn't as accessible after classes. I've emailed him a couple times throughout the semester about different things and have never gotten a response back. His lectures are confusing and he goes off topic, so in order to be ready for exams you have to teach yourself everything in the textbook.
This class is very easy if you do your homework and come to class. The homework are prep guides and you need the book, there is a free online pdf version. The Professor is very understanding and is passionate about the class. Attendance is mandatory and the tests are easy if you do your homework and pay attention to lecture.
Sure, Jose is a nice guy but his kindness doesn't make up for the time he uses in class to rant about politics and his "difficult" life. His lectures are often off topic, meaning that you have to teach yourself the material. If you need to reach out to him outside of class, good luck. He is rarely accessible.
Professor Martinez did a great job at making the content understandable. The content itself is pretty boring to me, but I really appreciated Prof Martinez's efforts to making the class as enjoyable as he can. Pretty lecture heavy with prep guides to do for each chapter. Overall a solid professor!
Professor Jose's class has been amazing and impacted my life immensely. He is an amazing professor whose lectures are captivating due to his comedic personality, but also I really enjoy the material. Yes he doesn't respond to email very often, but it's simple to talk to him after class and he takes responsibility if he didn't see/respond to it.
Initially I was not a fan of Jose or Theories of Learning. After keeping an open mind it helped me appreciate the material and the ideas he was trying to convey. The material overall is very boring, but Jose really helped it all come full circle and applied to the real world. Kind and funny guy, easy class.
Jose is the best professor I have ever had. He helped me remember why I chose psychology to be my major in the first place. His lectures are all very meaningful, and he forces you to push boundaries and think outside of the box. He is caring, thoughtful, kind, and really funny! Give him a chance, the material can be hard, but you won't regret it.
Jose is a great guy who truly cares about his students. As far as the class went, the syllabus did not reflect the class and most of the lectures were just him discussing one point for 40 minutes. Weekly homework helped more with learning than class discussions and all the exams were very easy (basically common sense). Show up and you'll get an A.
He doesn't just want you to pass, he wants you to be able to use the information to change your own life. Lectures are mind blowing. You get a glimpse of society. Sometimes it can be a disheartening topic, but you leave feeling inspired to help make society better. Come with an open mind and you'll learn a lot.
Hands down the best psychology professor at UML. All professors in the psych department can learn a great deal from this man. Very intelligent and very passionate. I left every lecture amazed.
Great professor! His class definitely left a mark on my college experience. It made me think differently about psychology in general and was one of my most interesting classes. He cares deeply about the world outside the classroom and is very genuine. Read the textbook!
Great teacher, very caring person, and offers a lot of insight on the fundamentals of life (learning, adapting, and survival) but talks A LOT!
He is so funny. His lectures could lowkey be confusing but overall an easy class. Weekly homeworks using textbook. He is very nice take it.
Actually really funny and makes lectures enjoyable! Classes consists of lectures and assignments consist of textbook reading and questions due basically every class, which you sometimes discuss in groups. Pretty easy class as long as you follow along and do your homework.
Jose is a very compassionate instructor. He is very passionate and familiar with the course content and it shows. Completely disregard the syllabus, as there are multiple major assignments in there that were never actually assigned. In practice, the class is graded by exams (not difficult if you did the reading), chapter homework, and attendance.
Words can't express how much I love this prof! He's passionate about educating students. He's hilarious, lectures are intriguing, and material I learned is the reason I GOT A JOB! So entertaining and eye opening. This course impacted many areas of my life.Attendance isn't recorded consistently, but just attend and put some effort in you'll pass.
Best prof I've taken. We had 4 in class, paper exams. Every class a prep guide was due, which takes a WHILE, but important to learning. Doesn't take consistent attendance- ATTEND, what you learn is SO worth it. ONE CRITIQUE, I wish his syllabus was more accurate and clear. As long as you do the reading and listen to the lecture, you can't fail.
Amazing professor, worth the time and effort to take this course seriously.
Professor Martinez is one of the few professors in which you believe they CARE about your learning and what you take from his class. He emphasizes the importance of attendance, not for an attendance grade, but to take the most out of his class. He talks a lot though- but better him than some robotic teacher reading slides word for word.
Weirdest, funniest, coolest professor ever. Would take every class he offers. Crazy smart.
Great professor who really knows the material and cares about his students. Attendance isn't mandatory but expected. If you miss class, homework due that day won't be graded. 4 exams including the final, no papers. Kind, fair, and wants everyone to succeed. Take him, you'll learn something! He could do a better job with responding to emails.
This class has changed the trajectory of my learning and impacted me beyond academia. The professor teaches the topics in many different ways so everyone can understand, applying it to real life situations beyond the school setting. Classes are interesting and focused on communication during class, as well as a homework sheet that sums the content.
I took prof. Martinez's class last fall (2024) and I understand why he isn't everyone's favorite professor, but he truly is one of my favorites. He is knowledgeable, patient, and great to talk to in and outside of class. Highly recommend taking his course(s).
Inspired by the power of Thor, I highly recommend this fantastic class. You'll learn a lot and expand your mind. Though it requires significant reading, the textbook is engaging and has helpful examples. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I strongly suggest you go—you won't regret it. The professor is hilarious and quirky, adding to the experience.
