THE WORST!!! HANG YOURSELF BEFORE TAKING THIS FOOL!! NO HELP, NO REVIEW FOR THE TESTS, RUDE, FILLIN THE BLANK ON THE TESTS NO MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS.. WHAT A MORON!!
If you want to pass this class, DO NOT TAKE ORTA. He's awful! He only gives two exams (midterm and final) and a paper. When I took this class, the highest grade was a 63(out of 100). NO ONE PASSED.Save yourself since it was too late for us.
horrible professor. Does *nothing* to help his students. I have a great g.p.a. and now because of this class it will suffer!! iwas SUPPOSED to graduate this semester and now i will have to stay i more semester to retake this class!!!!! ughu!
Very wise and knows a lot. Easy A for those who like to learn. If you just want to pass the class don't take him, you'll do him a favor. Doesn't like multiple choise because he wants you to learn. Gives extra credit, extra work to help grades and very helpful if you SHOW desire to learn.
i couldn't have hated this class more, the entire class had to go to the dean's office to complain, we went about 4 times, and now i have to take it over, never offers advice, rude and sarcastic jerk
Good teacher and fair tests. Various extra credits and the guy answers any question you ask. He is really good.
Very good professor. A little accent but very clear. Fear exams and very easy going. Nice person and knows a lot.
Really good professor. Knows beyond what he teaches. Takes his time to answer any question. Good exams and easy going. Flexible but just. Good experience.
Very nice guy with a bit of an accent. Enjoys bringing examples to class and he really knows his stuff. Problem is....you NEVER know what will be on the test. Basically: he tells you to read chapers 1-3 and will have 5, 6, or 7 questions on the entire test. Solution? Memorize the ENTIRE chapers 0_o
Very good professor for those who want to learn. He answers any questions, doesn't care about homework or attendance, easy going but you have to study. Easy exams but no reviews, no multiple choice so if you don't want to learn, you won't pass.
this is the worst teacher!! you spend your time in class doing nothing but writting notes..he talks so low you cant even hear him. your grade depends on 3 test..which are only 10 questions BUT you have 50 pages of notes to study from. he gives no reviews so you basically have to learn every word on your notes. almost impossible to pass!
This guy is pretty awesome. He is definitely a good teacher and he knows ALL ABOUT astronomy. He has an accent but he speaks English very well, if you have trouble hearing, sit in the front like I do. MAKE SURE TO TAKE NOTES but everything is pretty much covered in the Voyages book.
Really knows his stuff, very easy class to pass if you listen and take an interest, otherwse don't bother.
Wonderful teacher. Very funny. I stayed home the last couple weeks and studied out of the book. You have to study, but its not hard.
Good teacher he knows alot about the subject matter. All he teaches from is his power points. You will get a good grade if you just copy his notes and skim through the book, study, and do the extra credit. The test are about 8 questions. Not multiple choice but read and respond. If you do all that you shouyld be able to answer the questions.
Great teacher who knows EVERYTHING astronomical. Very funny as well. Simply put: if you slack off you will fail this class. BUT if you work really hard and study a lot for the 3 tests you will be fine. Very few grades, so each one counts a lot but they are definitely doable. Study a lot, enjoy this class and get your A.
This guy is HORRIBLE!!! Do not take him! EVER!! You can't understand half the things he says b/c he speaks extremely fast & low. He teaches looking to the floor at ALL times. There's alot b/s to remember for the test which he gives no reviews for. Do not waste your time!!!!
So I was really interested in taking astronomy before I took this class, and now I'm glad I did. You'll think your grade is low, but he does some weird mathematical equation that ends up giving you a good grade. Take notes, study in a group, ask him questions. Do the 2 observations!! Sit close, because he hates using the microphone.
He takes attendance for the sake of it, but you don't have to go unless you want to take the note. The notes are exactly what is on the test(power point all semster. Even if you don't study, you can make up an answer in the test and he'll give you credit for it!! EASY EASY EASY!make sure you do the observations! Very nice professor, and funny .=)
It's an ok class he knows what he's talking about and the tests are fill in questions and strictly on major topics good professor funny too
He is a very good professor becausde he knows a lot about Astronomy and it's history but sometimes he talks so fast that you may get lost on some of the things he teaches. Everyday is note-taking from his power point presentations but it's pretty basic and easy stuff! take him as a professor!
Class is a powerpoint presentation. Just write down what's on the slides and you will never have to open the text book. Your grade is based on a class average, so if everyone has a 75% grade in class, that will be an A. He knows his astronomy.
This teacher REALLY KNOWS what he's talking about! That is refreshing to have! Boring class, but who cares, just write down all the notes, study them for tests (he grades very fairly) and there's a MEGA curve @ the end of the yr with ur final grade! I am not a science person, I got an A for the 1st time in my life! it's worth it! & he's a nice guy!
HIS LECTURES ARE KINDA OF BORING. JUST TAKE NOTES AND DONT BE ABSENT. STUDY FROM THE NOTES AND THE BOOK AND YOU'LL DO GREAT!
Dr. Orta is a great professor. His exams are not hard at all. As a matter of fact, the homework questions tend to be harder than the actual exam. It's an easy course if you apply yourself and actually read the book.
ANYHOW!!! Don't take him!!! He's not so clear although he seems to know his stuff. You will have to hit the book really hard if you wanna pass the class. Funny noises and weird looking will keep you awake during the class.
Great Professor. If you are intrigued by genius, take this class. I recommend that you do not try and write down everything he says. Stick to the Obvious lessons. He will subtly emphasis the things that are on the test. Exams are laughibly easy if you just pay attention and dont overstudy. Funny too.
Awesome professor. He knows what he is talking about. Don't buy the book! Study from the notes he gives on all the power point slides. He doesn't care about attendance but the tests are based on his notes. I loved it I was super interested in the class.
GREAT PROFESSOR!! the class is awesome and he is very knowledgeable about the subject. he is pretty interesting and his tests are not that hard at all, just study and you ill do well.... plus he replaces the final with your worst test grade...
This guy was just boring i took the 1st test and the first thing i did as soon as i saw my grade was drop and get another class. You study off the notes he gives you but he is so mono-tone and the notes he gives you are a ton for just an 8 question test.
He's devoted to what he loves, and anyone interested in learning about Astronomy will have no problem with this class and pass. He can get boring, so just take down the notes and study them yourself, really easy stuff. Attendance seemed to be, sign in for some people and leave, so I'm not sure on that. Likes to say "thisastuff" a lot. ;)
This teacher was horrible i didnt learn a thing and its boring... dont get me wrong hes a nice guy but really i like to learn when im in school and i didn't learn anything.. the class was disappointing because the whole first part of the class you talk about philosophers and he expects you to know a lot already, dont take him if you want to learn
Astronomy's interesting, period. I loved his class cuz you can tell he LOVES what he's doing. He has an office & U can visit him if U like. I took his class and never studied. Notes aren't mandatory, no HW, & U have to write up a few observations papers about celestial objects. Easy & interesting class. Nice guy. Recommend it! Grades on a curve.
Easy class. Yes, he can be monotonous but just copy the notes and show up to every class and you'll do fine! Plus don't even buy the book if you plan to be in class everyday.
you should hang yourself before considering taking him.the class started out full and left with 5 of us. only one student pass the class.very thick accent and when he can't find a word he tells you that stuff. horrible teacher
I took him over the summer. First we had Trelles, then him. He is more helpful than Trelles and definitively nicer. The class by itself is very hard, but he made the material easier to understand than Trelles did. Quiz every week, drop the lowest. Three tests in total, no final. If you study a lot and work hard you should get a good grade.
Class is slack, simply show up and take notes, tests based on notes. 4 tests, drops lowest, avrg out of 3 plus 2 observations (about astronomy events or talks). tests are short answer, no multiple choice. he talks fast and has an accent, but as long as u write down his ppt notes, u'll be fine. book's not necessary except when u miss a day. got an A
This guy is horrible.he's probably the worst teacher i have ever had.it shouldnt even have the right to teach a class.all you do is take notes every single class from a powerpoint. he talks and he doesnt even look at you.plus his accent is so bad you cant understand what hes saying half the time.Your probably better off teaching yourself.
I didnt learn anything from this class, really... or at least anything useful. He can be hard to understand if you sit in the back, but if you care enough to sit up front, its not so bad. His tests arent easy to study for because there is so much area he covers between tests but the questions themselves are pretty simple. He's pretty helpful
Hes passionate, creative, and makes the subject even more interesting than it is. He talks fast and has an accent but not a bad one. Honestly one of if not thee best teacher I have had in MDC but if you're stupid or a slacker dont take this class you wont pass (you know who you are)
I think hes sexy! ( ; but class is boringggg! He gets excited when hes about to say something "funny" that you barely understand him.. and the observations..WACK! He talks wayyyy too fast! I haven't learned much in this class! -.-
First day of class: "Oh my god, I do not understand this man!" About two weeks into it, you get used to his accent. He only has 3 tests, but to be honest, THEY ARE NOT THAT BAD. I really overestimated the tests, but study! You don't need to buy the book. Just take notes of all his power points. Put your works cited on the power point project!
I TELL YOU NOT..AND YOU ARE STILL GONNA TAKE HIM. YOU WON'T LEARN ANYTHING FROM HIM AND WILL NOT PASS THE CLASS.
Prof. Orta is one of the best professors I have ever had. This guy knows his stuff! If you need clarification on anything, you can ask. He's real nice and patient. He's fantastic! :D I recommend the optional lab if you're really interested in astronomy. You don't need the book for this course, but go to every class and take thorough notes.
Really ...but really BAD..BAd!!! teaching
Interesting class!!!! You just have to take notes, pay attention and that's it. Got an A!!!!! =) Learned a lot.
Professor Orta is a very good professor. He is very helpful if you need any help. His tests seem a bit challenging, but not impossible to pass. There are 2 observation papers that you must do, as well as a project on a planet. I really learned a lot I'm glad I took this class. Take it!!! It's interesting :)
Not gonna lie his class is HARD alot of reading and alot of Astronoical equations but He is very helpful, and very concerned with your success I took him twice had to drop him the first time becasue I got called up to go to Iraq but he remembered who I was and he helped me with any issues I had plus if you do the two observations its a gurantee
great professor. lectures were insightful-very knowledgeable in his area. can tell this guy is a real scientist-physics mostly and some chemistry for sure. class was mostly note-taking and 95% of test material comes from lecture notes. book is good-don't really need it to pass with a good grade. i got an "a" or "b" (positive) without final exam
Orta is a bit on the quirky side, per say, but I loved that. Just show up to class, take notes, and just pay attention. Do the observations in advance so you wont have to worry about them close to the due date. Sit close to the front of the class, and if you can, take the lab, it helps form a relationship.
Really good professor. Talks a lot and uses every last second of class. Really easy if you go and pay attention to his power points. I never read the book I only studied from his power points and passed with an A.
Yes he talks very fast and has an accent, but its over the stuff that is either not important or stuff that you should have already known. His class is a bit challenging but that's the point of learning, if you do the homework and ask questions in class or during office hours he is very helpful. Compared to other teachers a lenient grader.
Professor Orta is a bit hard to understand and moves VERY fast, but he is brilliant with physics. Be sure to not miss a single class and do ALL of the study guides and you should be able to keep up just fine. He is very friendly and is grades very fairly. I will be taking PHY2049 with him as well.
Brilliant man. Loves astronomy and is very kind and patient. Talks very fast. His tests are very simple, that could be a good or bad thing depending on what you're used too.
Accent never bothered me but he does talk a little fast. Nice guy and knows his stuff; his lectures were pretty clear. A little quirky. Grades fairly... study and you'll do well.
Only recommended for those who know the material or are willing to find their own study material. This professor is a great person but he will fly through the material and leave the class mostly clueless. I took 2048, got an A, but knew the material. Now taking 2049 is a pain because its hard to learn with him.
Does not care about attendance, but you MUST STUDY. Tests are challenging but not impossible, he always curves them. Must do two observations of the sky. Drops your lowest test grade as well. He is so intelligent, really knows his stuff. Recommended if you enjoy astronomy and wish to actually LEARN, but don't take this class if you're lazy!
Very nice person. Not a very clear to understand professor. I had to teach myself most of the course.
He knows his material very well, but his way to teach it to students isn't very effective. Took him for 2048 and 2049, and they were tough courses. You gotta dedicate your time into self-study. He went through material very quickly, so paying extra attention was required during the class. He is the only professor that teaches 2048 & 2049 at Kendall
Amazing professor! He explains the material extremely well, gives you lots of practice problems and is willing to answer any question you may have in class or during his office hours. You don't need a textbook for his class. His tests & quizzes are super simple and he grades really fairly. Highly recommended!
great professor.
this guy is very confusing, he talks so fast like if someone were pointing a gun at his head to talk, on top of that his tone of voice is so monotone which makes you lose interest and get distracted easily. His teaching is boring and too fast paced. It sucks because he's the only professor teaching physics 2048 and 2049 in Kendall campus
Honestly worst professor ever. Does not care for your progress, talks too fast, has an accent and there is no review for exams at all. He was behind, taught a chapter the day before the final, REALLY? Just avoid him if you must. Half the class failed or passed with D-C's.
Funny, quirky guy and very smart. Has a strong accent & talks very fast so you have to pay attention. He does not do a review for exams and only asks 5 questions, so study level is high & stressful. He was extremely behind in the syllabus. He doesn't use the book & doesn't care about attendance.
Professor Orta is passionate about the subject he teaches, he is patient during office hours and will help you out with any questions you have. Physics is not an easy subject to teach so you must put the time in the book and his class notes. As an access student, I highly recommend him. He went out of his way and did what he could to accommodate.
DON'T MISS A CLASS! He goes pretty quick and covers a lot in one session. If you have a question, he wants you to know the stuff, so he'll answer. See him after class, he'll help, email him, he'll respond. You have to study and do some work, but you'll learn. He provides a list of what to study for each test, don't miss, and STUDY!
I had NEVER failed a class before in my whole life. His explanations are confusing, makes the subject look even harder than what it already is,talks fast and extremely low, if physics is not your thing or you don't like it(like me)then stay away from this guy, you would have to know how to teach on your own in order to pass this class.
This is what you need to know: He gives either a quiz or a test every week. There is no textbook but all of the questions from homework are from a textbook. GET IT. So you have some text to study from. He's not easy but the curve is good.
Nice and very knowledgeable guy. Easy class if you do the homework ( all of it). His tests and quizzes are based on homework and some of the examples he gives in class, review those before taking the test. GET THE TEXTBOOK HE USES, it will help you a lot!!
Nice person and professor, the material can be confusing and tedious to learn since it requires a decent level of math and time for practice. He is very quick at explaining, but he helps you if ask him. It is not an easy class so you need to put a lot of your time, you need to do the hw and maybe read some stuff from the book.
This is the first class I drop. He talks really low and when he does problems on the board they are really confusing. He expects you to know what he is doing and doesn't explain how he got the answer. Sometimes he starts to talk so fast its like he wants to beat his own record on how fast you can finish a sentence. Avoid if physics is hard for you.
Talks really fast so you have to sit in the front. hard homework, hard tests, hard course. but, he is really considerate when grading. LONG LECTURES.
Very confusing. Talks unnecessarily fast. Eccentric. 10 quizzes and 4 test, so every week you either have a quiz or test. Class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, he likes teaching something completely new on Tues and put it on an exam the next lecture. Tests are hard as hell, you'll have to study the book, guide & class problems to get an A. Fair grader
very Good professor, way better than Gibert in Wolfson. he gives a lot of examples which help you pass the course and cares about students. He talks fast but everybody can understand.
No homework, just 3 tests and 2 papers on astronomical observations. His tests are only 5 questions and fill in the blankshort answer. They are difficult because he covers so much material and the test is so short and detailed. Not impossible by any means to pass, but if you want the A you'll have to study a lot and pay attention in class.
This class is extremely HARD. I do not take a course load and still struggle with this class even though I study for it all week, weekends, holidays, and more than 5 hours per day! This is your only option in Kendall, so if you can, take it somewhere else.
Doesn't like people to talk over him, he's great professor, even sometimes funny. Great big smile, but he cares about attendance so don't skip!
This professor has a somewhat heavy accent, sometimes is difficult to understand him and speaks pretty fast. The book helps to understand him better. There was 3 tests which he curves if the class went bad and 2 observations. Overall its an easy A if it wasn't for his 5 detailed fill in the blank test question when covering a bunch of chapters.
Prof. Orta is a good professor overall. He gives a lot of examples in class, so you have some reference to do the assigned homework. Physics is hard for me, so I had to study around 4 days a week. I took it with 5 more classes and got an A, so yeah... it's not impossible! He talks so fast, oh boy! You get used to it though. I'd recommend him.
Funny guy but low voice and kind of awkward. Not an easy class and he won't make it any easier. Try to find someone else. No textbook so nothing to study from and his homework doesn't always reflect the test. Homework not graded...
This is the worst professor I've ever had. Very bad explenations. Very heavy accent and speaks very fast. It is very hard to understand this professor. His tests are not multiple choice. You have to memorize a lot of difficult content. He lectures new content a class before the test and there is no review. I would never ever recomed this professor
Professor Orta doesn't know how to teach. He has no methodology. He probably knows his stuff but he doesn't know how to lecture it to students. He goes through PowerPoint, and students have to copy very fast the material that he is showing while he is explaining. Students won't know what he is about or what are they writing about. Awful professor
Orta is not a good professor. First, his english is not good and second, he likes to speak very very fast. Do yourself a favor, take another professor that explain the material good and clear and that care about the students. He is one of those professor that likes to show the students how hard physics is. I wouldn't take him and I pass with A ok.
I expected more proof and interesting theoretical work. In general, the class was very mechanic and a little boring. You basically had to memorize a bunch of formulas and plug in the correct values from the problem. All in all, the professor is very kind and he will help you.
Professor Orta is a bit fast at times, but not to the point were its detrimental. He explains each chapter by deriving the formulas and working out examples from the textbook. I highly recommend that you get the textbook that he uses; all of the homework problems come from it. His tests and quizzes are based off the homework, so I suggest you do it
He is super awesome and funny! Tests are a bit hard, but don't over think them. He puts the basic stuff on the test. Overall, pretty cool guy.
Worst teacher ever! Don't take
Fastest speaking professor ever. Did not understand one word he said all semester. Don't go to the zoo for the log observation because SCAS hasn't showed up in months according to zoo administration. How to pass the class: read every chapter thoroughly and pay extreme attention to what he's trying to say/teach. No homework just 3 tests/1 final
Speaks VERY quickly but I got used to it. However, I can't say the same for some of my students. Tests are hard in the sense that they are 5-question tests only, but speaking from experience, you can do fairly well if you study from the Power-Points (take as much notes as you can). Before doing the obser. logs, SPEAK WITH HIM about how and where.
In my opinion, he is the best Physics professor at MDC. After he introduces the theory he gives plenty of solved problems. He is very straight forward and he knows for sure his stuff. He does curve the grades. I took him during spring and I am gonna take him again for PHY 2049. Do you wanna learn? take him. You wanna an easy A? Take someone else.
do not take him for astronomy. This is the worst teacher I've ever had. he gives 6 questions on 7 chapters (tells you to study everythng) gives no study guide, no examples of what questions will be on the test and doesn't give out his powerpoints. He made it impossible to pass class. he is just funny, his class sucks and so does his lectures,
He isn't a bad professor but his lectures aren't very clear. His tests are very hard. If you are good with physics and study 24/7 you will be fine. But his class is difficult and he teaches very fast. He is a nice guy and funny also. But, if physics isn't you best subject don't take him.
He goes over power point slides. You only get 4 tests and he drops the lowest grade. All tests are 6 questions and you pick 5. You don't have to go to class, but if you don't, you'll be lost. Tests are on like 5-6 chapters and you need to memorize notes & book. Super hard class and he's hard to understand. He talks fast!
Guys. :( He talks way to fast, he gives 4 tests each with 6 Questions based on about 4 chapters at a time. He comes to class late every day in a rush. He is disorganized. He doesn't give any reviews or study guides which is disrespectful for me. He doesn't ask how we are doing and if there is anything he could do to help us... you feel hopeless.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER! WHO THE HECK GIVES 5 QUESTIONS TEST ON LIKE 9 CHAPTERS OF MATERIAL AND NO REVIEW! IVE COMPLAINED SO MANY TIMES TO THE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT AND HE SPEAKS SO FAST ITS IMPOSSIBLE TO UNDERSTAND A WORD HE SAYS! HE DOESNT TELL YOU IF YOUR PASSING OR FAILING WHICH IS RIDICULOUS
Let me start by saying he has been the only problematic professor I've had while studying at MDC and I graduate this summer. You turn in assignments and he takes forever to grade it. I submitted a complaint to the department chair about his terrible work ethic because he refuses to grade my work. If you love yourself and your sanity, don't do it.
Prof. Orta was a very funny professor. However, I did not learn too many things from taking his class. It's very hard to understand him, his accent is very heavy and he speaks with a very low tone. His class consists of 3 tests. They are all 6 questions only. He does curve the grades though, depending on the average grade and the highest grade.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER!He speaks way too fast, also his accent is very heavy. He doesnt care if you understand what he said, he will keep on going. The textbook ISBN code on the syllabus is incorrect... His Power Points presentation have 100+ slides and when I asked him to send it to my email he told me that I have to copy everything. HORRIBLE!
He is tough for no reasons. He uses an outdated textbook that is useless, his lectures are useless, and he is not very helpful. He is hard to hear or understand even though he makes excuses for it. If you can avoid taking him, do it all costs. Unless it does not affect your GPA because it is not easy to get an A at all!
I did not find his accent to be hard to understand at all. However, he does speak very fast and so low that it feels like he's whispering at times and that's an issue. He is a very lenient grader so high grades are not that hard to get if your work hard and do a l l assigned problems. Not an easy A by any means but he's not the worst Prof. either
He has a strong accent so I do recommend sitting up front to understand what his saying. As for tests, at first it may seem intimidating because there are only 5 written questions based on like 6 or 7 diff. chapters. However, the Qs are so generic that if you dont focus on little detail you'll be fine. If you ask he will help. Honestly great class.
hands down the worst professor I've ever had at dade. I don't mind teachers with accents cause everyone has an accent in miami but he talks so fast u literally can't understand a single thing he says. his tests are 5 questions each and they are all fill in and super hard. no matter how much u study u wont get higher than a 60. please dont take this
Class is easy because you dont do anything but listen to him lecture and write down his PowerPoint notes. BUT test are hard! 3 tests with 5 questions on each test. Written answers. Final is optional/makes up lowest test grade. So study the notes and read the chapters to better understand! DONT STUDY LAST MINUTE. Lots of information to remember.
His tests dont really follow his lectures/PowerPoints, so you better read up and make sure you are confident about the material. He talks extremely fast and also very low so try to sit up front. It was very clear that the entire class had trouble with his class. Grade is based on 4-5 tests and two astronomical observational logs.
A quiz every week, but he's a very fair grader. Do the questions he assigns and review the examples to guarantee the A
speaks low, has an accent, he teaches from the examples and problems out of the book. Some of the quiz and test questions come from book, some don't. written quizzes and tests must show work. Question come from the chapter not necessarily a specific topic, 1 question a chapter, 15 mins a question. No review. Book can be helpful, sometimes its not.
He does speak low and fast. Some of the questions of the tests pertain to the PowerPoints. He says to turn in at least two observation logs but if you want to do more you can. He has three exams (third exam will replace the lowest grade. Be prepared to read and take you're own notes. There's no study guide!
Honestly I think he's an amazing professor. Sure he talks fast but everything he says is important. Maybe everyone is complaining because he takes his teaching seriously and they just want an easy A cause its Miami Dade. I took him for PHY2048 and I'm gonna take him for PHY2049. He's pretty funny too.
Dont take this professor!!
Amazing professor if you want to learn. Its not hard to get the A since there is a curve depending on how everybody is doing. However you do have 10 quizzes and 4 test, you do get to drop one from each at the end, so no slacking on studying. If you want a good foundation on physics, he is your guy, for an easy A get someone else.
Pros: His tests are based off of his lectures so you'll never see a problem that wasn't taught in class. He gives partial credit and his grading scale is clear. You have a lot of chances to raise your grade. He lets you bring a formula sheet. Cons: He talks pretty fast and low so i suggest you sit at the front of the class.
Orta is very smart and is a bit cold in class but when you go to his office he does a 180 and will help you no matter what, just ask until you understand don't be intimidated! Super funny and teaches very well. I suggest reading the book and doing some probs before class. 1 quiz a week 4 tests with stuff from homework or lecture. Makes you learn!
Truly one of the best professors at MDC... I am retaking PHY2049 now with Prof. Orta and I feel like I enjoy Physics again. My previous professor would assume you'd read the chapter prior to coming to class, so he would cut a lot of corners and think of examples on the spot. THIS professor explains every detail, and uses the problems from the book
Speaks very low, so I would recommend sitting up front. Very nice person in and out of class. 4 Exams and 6 quizzes with the lowest of each being dropped. Gives practice problems out of the textbook that should prepare you for the exams, and grades based on a curve. Overall a good experience.
He covers every topic that is on tests (can't say the same thing about my previous physics professors). I recommend buying the hardcover book. Its old but very concise and he lectures based off it. He does many examples, too, but ultimately you must do the HW to pass the quizzes and exams. His tests and quizzes are fair and gives partial credit.
This professor was not the best at all. Speaks incredibly low, gets bothered when asked to speak louder, 4 tests, gives no test review nor study guide. Doesnt answer your exact question and answers sarcastically. No homework or extra credit whatsoever. Tests are not specific and are confusing. Does not care at all.
Professor Orta should honestly not be allowed to teach. While he is very knowledgeable in the subject, his lectures are barely understandable, he murmurs most of it. There is a quiz every week and additional tests. He does not answer questions clearly, most of his answers are sarcastic. Had to rely on my own methods to get a good grade in the class
Listen, study, learn, and pass. If English is not your first language be aware he speaks really fast but every of his sentences its full of content and knowledge. Take note and read the chapters before you show up. He is considerate and very respectful.
Great teacher, He speaks REALLY low and FAST, so you may want to sit in the front row, however he is a nice dedicated professor. He will answer if you are not afraid to ask (and get moked sometimes... in a good way). His lectures are amaizing if you care to hear them. Took another professor for 2049 and I regreted it all the semester, He's the best
Do not take him if you want to learn!! I passed with an "A" but would never take him again.
I took this class during COVID as a blended course, unfortunately he just reads straight from his powerpoints, barely answers any questions & talks like he doesn't want to be there teaching. He is very sarcastic and usually doesn't understand your question. I'm dropping his class due to being forced to attend in person and he not being very helpful
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!! I get that doing online class isn't fun, but he makes it more miserable than it already is! He shows no interest in the class, gets annoyed when you ask him a question, and there are no study guides, homework assignments, or notes to help you study for the tests. Just 4 tests and that's it. Waste of time!!!
He does not teach. As simple as that. You will sit through a 2 hour lecture just copying all the problems he does, and trust me he does a lot of them very quickly. Not only are those 2 hours completely dreadful but you also will not understand anything he is saying because he goes extremely fast and does not explain.
Do not take his class!!! One of the worst professors I have ever worked with. His lectures are long and you barely understand him. He "teaches" off of a powerpoint and barely makes any sense. There is ONLY 4 grades for the class in TOTAL. Those grades are the 4 chapter tests, which he doesn't give study guides or reviews. He is NOT a good professor
No homework. No optional assignment. yea sounds great. But you only have four test. And the lowest grade drops. So each test is effectively 33% of your grade. No extra credit and no office hours. Almost forgot don't expect you know you grade on the previous exam until after you've taken the second. So you really have 0 bench mark of your progress
If you're thinking of taking AST1002 with Prof. Orta, consider another professor first. He would make fun of students' questions and disregarded our need for a study guide or practice assignments. There are only 4 tests and many long uninterrupted lectures that are hard to understand. Don't get this teacher. You will most likely regret it.
The worst professor ever. I was so exited to start this class and the professor ruined it. At first it sounds like an easy class because there is no homework and only 4 tests, however his lectures are boring and monotone. He does not give study guides! Half of my class dropped it, including myself.
Orta is a solid choice for lab. Speaks very low and fast but is not a harsh grader for lab. Final grade is based on the average of all your lab reports. There is an optional final as well.
He speaks extremely low and very fast, you literally cannot understand. He bases your grade on just a few tests and they are not easy. No study guides. You basically learn from the book ONLY. I stopped going to class because i couldnt hear him, so i just took the tests after reading. He also doesnt give you the result of your exam until WEEKS later
This is the first professor I ever had that made me enjoy physics, and more importantly: I actually understood. I took this class in my country, and I had a really hard time understanding. He does talk very low, and fast, and do lots of exercises in class. But he explains every single idea to get the answer. Also, he enjoys student participation.
He is terrible at grading his tests in a reasonable time frame. Mind you, his tests are online on respondus which means they are already graded and it took him over a month to grade one of our tests.
Never answers emails. Extremely inaccessible. He is not worth taking for lab or lecture
He lectures, you take notes. 4 tests, drop the lowest score. Thats it. No other grading criteria. He's hilarious. He goes deep with the source material. This is what a normal college course is like. No hand holding. For me I took 3 tests, got an A and got to miss the last 1/4 of class. Do not take him if you want to be babied. no attendance grade
It was a tough class but the guy is pretty funny and you can tell he likes the subject he teaches, tests were tough but fair and he dropped the lowest score by the end of the semester.
Hes very smart and cool. Dont skip class, he test on everything he teaches in class. Grade is based on exams only (including final). Final replaces lowest grade. Homework is just for practice (highly recommend to do.) textbook not mandatory, but needed if you want to do homework problems. Exams are tough but doable.
I can't understand the professor behind his mask. Many hours waste in class without being able to understand most of what he was saying. He is a cool person but he didn't teach me a single thing during the whole course. I study with the book and youtube. The Lab professor was the one teaching how to solve the class problems. Class Grade F and Lab B
Jose Orta has an accent, if you can not handle that do not take this lab. His lab is simple, do the experiment, write a lab report off your collected data and follow the format he gives you and you'll have at least a 90 or above every report. Final is Optional, but can be handy.
Get ready to read and learn on your own. His lectures consist of short 5 minute explanations followed by almost two hours of straight problems from the book. If you self-study and then use the class as practice, you can get an A.
This professors class is heavily lecture-based and test-based. There is no homework, and you have to pass 3 out of the 5 exams in order to pass. The final is optional. Lectures are hard to follow and he doesn't share the power point, where all of the test questions come out of. He is hard to understand since he mumbles. Hard to grasp the material.
Professor Orta is a solid professor to take in Physics. His lectures are sometimes a little fast and long-winded, but the examples are always valuable and relevant, as well as being clear. The class has 4 tests and an optional final, but the lowest test grade is dropped. The homework, while optional, serves as the only exam review and must be done.
To get an A: must go to class, take notes, and then DO the problems he mentions in the book even HARD ONES. test questions are super super similar to in class problems and never as hard as book prblms. Ask questions on problems you get wrong and he explains. No makeup tests if sick, no extra credit, no homework just 4-5 exams and one is dropped.
The lectures are intense in content. Your final grade will be the average of your 3 highest scores out of 4. He curves the letter grade based on the class performance. There is an extra credit assignment worth 10% of your grade. The tests are 20 questions each on topics from the PowerPoints. He's an amazing professor. He makes the class really easy
Has an accent and speaks very softly. Lectures, though not mandatory, are him just going over textbook problems. No homework, only recommended exercises which serve as the only resource to how the exams will be since he doesn't provide past exams/reviews. Your entire grade is based on the average of 4 exams, with the lowest score being dropped.
I took AST1002 for Spring 2024 and I thought it was a lot of fun. It's a pretty interactive class so it's best to be present. He does have a textbook but I passed without it. no midterm optional final 4 mandatory quizzes seemed tough at first but he's pretty cool and gave 10 points extra credit to our overall grade (75% to an 85% for example).
One of the worst professors I have ever had so far and that is saying something considering ive had a lot of bad teachers. This guy genuinely wants to see you fail and if youre looking for a good teacher then do Not take this class . Terrible teacher.
Lectures can be intense, but the grading is straightforward - 3 out of 4 exams, with optional final and extra credit. unstuck AI was a big help for reviewing PowerPoints before tests. Overall, a fair class if you put in the work.
Talks very low, have to review on physics 1 and calculus beforehand because he will not explain anything that you learned in previous classes, not lenient or helpful to students and never answers emails.
Prof orta is a fairly decent prof. Just do what he says. He has a very strong accent and talks very fast and gets hard to understand, so for the most part you rely on the instructions and your group peers. Do all your lab reports and get a decent grade on every single one and you'll pass. Final is optional.
Nice guy: he can be grouchy and impatient but he's also friendly: you just need thicker skin and the right attitude. His exams aren't easy but he's quite generous with the grading. He curves grades and gives any partial credit he can. Most people in the class failed cuz they didnt study. Dont skip class, his exams are based mostly on his lecture
Funny guy! Lectures are fast paced (good) & mandatory student participation is rare. Be prepared to take notes constantly Your only source of practice is the textbook's problems, so you will need to keep track of your own learning. Your grade rests entirely on several tests. If you are studious, it's a fine class. Don't let yourself fall behind.
He's a terrible teacher; he does not teach anything. Everything he does s write the problems from the book on the board for three months. He expects you to learn by osmosis. Imagine sending your kids to school and the teacher starts writing calculus problems on the board but does not explain what anything means. You will not learn a thing with him.
He doesn't talk, just whispers, and speaks at 2.5x the speed of any YouTube lecture. The class was completely dreadful. DO NOT take any class with this professor if you want to learn.
If you value your sanity, don't take a class with this professor. The lectures are meaningless, and you won't learn a thing because he is only writing what is in the book. None of those problems will be on the quiz. The quizzes are 2 questions - 30 min, 80% procedure, and 20% final result. Those questions come from a list of exercises on Canvas.
Worst professor ever.
He does not teach anything and do not care about the students. AI can replace this guy because the only thing that he does is write the book on the board. It's an empty suit.
This professor is atrocious and condescending. If you ask a question, he humiliates you in front of the class, and that's the reason nobody asks anything. It's the first time someone has made me hate school.
- Talks fast, quiet, and with an accent - Each test is only 1 question. Is NOT clear on which section of the chapter the question will be based on. This is the most difficult and frustrating aspect of this class - bans personal calculators, hands out + No homework + No attendance grade + Curved every test + Extra credit survey quiz on the first day
I did not like his lectures very much. He speaks fast & quietly w/ an accent. He also went off topic sometimes. There was an extra credit quiz the first day. I recommend doing practice questions from the book; the tests are very similar. His curve on the tests was generous! Our entire grade was based on four tests, with the lowest being dropped.
Dr. Orta's lab class is pretty good. He has a document in Canvas explaining how to write lab reports. If you follow that, you should do well. While he has an accent, the written lab instructions are very clear. You shouldn't have a problem if you follow them closely. Despite what others have said here, the final was NOT optional for my class.
he is awful. you'll never know your grade. he doesn't care about his student; he talks very fast and very low. if you can avoid it, do it. Seriously please don't take any of his classes, change campus if you have to.
if you don't have a religion, get one and pray, you will need it for this class
