Great teacher, one of the best I've had so far. Cares about your progress. Sometimes a bit quick in the lesson although he will stop and reexplain if you ask.
He's a great guy but his class can become confusing, rushes a lot after teaching slow for a while and the pace can keep changing. Grading is confusing you never really know what to expect. Quizzes almost everyday
Honestly a pretty hard teacher. He's nice but grades hard. I'd recommend taking Nguyen or Garcia over him. Lots of hw and concept quizzes every day that are 50%of your grade
Prof Rico is a teacher who really cares about student success. He avails himself to his students and is very attentive to those who are struggling. Overall, his lectures are very clear and he doesn't only teach the math concept; he teaches you how the math is applied in the real world. He uses MyMathLab so no need to buy the textbook.
Rico is a pretty good teacher; he knows what he teaches. Plus he gives you extra time for quizzes. his quizzes are easy, and he also gives you three chances for each quiz so that yu can make up for the bad ones. He also gives a lot of extra credit.
he's an awesome teacher
he is one of the best math teachers I have
Professor Rico is an amazing teacher. The class is not tough if you put the time and effort into it. Make sure you do the practice. You will know the material by the end of the semester.
Prof. Rico is a really great teacher. He teaches a bit fast but he'll always help you out when you're lost. He really makes sure you understand the topic. The quizzes aren't hard at all and you'll definitely pass his class as long as you do your part.
Rico is a nice guy. He gives good feedback plus he goes to every single student to ask if they have a problem .
He really cares about how well we do and whether or not we understand whats he's teaching. He encourages his students to see him during his office hours if we have questions. And he gives quite a bit of extra credit. You should definitely take his class.
Professor Rico is hands down the best math teacher I've ever had. He is so passionate about teaching and honestly wants to make sure you understand the material and pass the class. If you don't get an A in this class, it's definitely your fault. He is always available to help and lets you retake quizzes. I would 100% recommend taking Mr. Rico
BEST MATH PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD. He'll dedicate plenty of time to you if you don't know something after class. He's a fair grader and structures his class for your success. Allows retakes for the quizzes, great teacher
He is an amazing teacher! Quizzes are 50% of your grade and are about every day to every orther day, but, can be retaken as many times as you want. You can always go to his office hours and welcomes questions during his class. Also as a tip he grades easier if you participate. If I was able to take him for everyone of my math classes I would.
I took him fall 2016, Rico is probably one of my favorite professors here at Ohlone. He makes the class easy to follow and is extremely open minded to his student's concerns. He grades easily/reasonably and with the concept quizzes(you can retake them), you really get to learn the material. He is always opened to talking about anything. Easy A
Professor Rico is the best Math Teacher I have ever taken. He is very easy to reach outside of class, and will usually respond to emails within the day. He does go fast and homework is very important, but I feel like it is still manageable. Also you can retake quizzes an unlimited amount of time, which is really helpful.
My class was Rico's first time teaching stats, so he can only get better. This class is 3+ hours long, so try not to get distracted or else nothing will make sense. He would also give us about 5-7 days to finish each homework assignment, but each one was 15-50 questions that are usually multi step. Regardless, I still recommend him.
He is a really tough grader on the tests and the exams are all pretty hard. He also assigns a lot of homework through MyMathLab. It's a tough class overall, the material is tough, so be prepared to be going to the Math Lab for help whenever possible. I think he is a really tough professor!!!!
He's absolutely adorable and charming! And he is so enthusiastic about teaching. IF you take him, always ask questions and take advantage of his Office Hours.
Professor Rico is a amazing teacher. He explains very well and is very understanding towards his students. The quizzes are called concept assessments and you can retake them as much as you want. On the midterm he let my class re take one page from the test to receive more points. When I signed up for classes I was so excited that he teaches stats!!
Prof Rico is very intelligent and friendly. He is willing to help students outside of class. He explains every concept thoroughly and with passion, which makes his lectures easy to follow along. I love that he can explain difficult things in a simple way. Attend class and take notes. HW is crucial. Took him for 2 classes, and would take him again.
Great professor his door is always open just make sure you stay on top of the study guide!!!
Professor Rico doesn't assign us homework. He gives us practice problems to do, but it's optional. He made the MyMathLab extra credit, because we were overwhelmed by it and it made our grade drop. We usually have mini quiz everyday. He reviewed the materials with us before taking them. He also let us to retake them. He is an easy grader.
This dude made me love math again. I'd take him for every math course if I could! The homework and quizzes are meant to be enriching, not punishing. Only a few questions per day and they're a negligible portion of your grade. The quizzes, however, are a heavy portion of your grade BUT YOU CAN RETAKE ANY TIME. I actually learn in this class!
Professor Rico is one of the best math professor I have had at Ohlone. His lectures are very easy to follow and interesting. Also, he cares a lot about his students, if his students are struggling, he will go out of his way to help them. I totally recommend him for not only Stats but for Algebra 2 as well!
Explains each and everything in best way Good professor
Professor Rico is one of the best teachers you can ever have. He is super nice and cares so much about his students! He has office hours almost everyday and he always wants to help you if you dont understand something. Not very much homework, but make sure you do it all and study for tests and itll be an easy A.
Great experience taking this class with him
Good professor I ever seen in my life
One of the best math courses I've ever taken. Not only does he give amazing lectures, but his grading policy is very generous. Homework makes up 5% of your overall grade, while periodic quizzes make up 50%. That may seem like a lot, but you can retake them as many times as you need. Ultimately, if you put in the work, you'll definitely get an A.
He definitely knows his stuff when it comes to math. He also wants to see his students succeed and I don't think I've had a teacher do what he had done for me, to help me pass knowing I should've invested more time into showing up. He gives daily hw which is pretty clear and gives quizzes once in a while.
Prof Rico is amazing. He makes sure that his students understand the concepts that are being taught and his quiz/exams are based from what we do in class w/ his worksheets. Show up, ask questions, do the practice/homework, and you'll easily pass. Definitely the easiest A I received in college and he was such a joy to be around.
Professor Rico is one of the best professors on this campus. He makes sure every student is able to pass. His lectures are completely understandable; he works really hard to help all his students. Professor Rico has a smile on his face no matter if his day has been good or bad. He was always available before and after class; always willing to help!
Prof Rico genuinely cares about you and your grade. 10/10 recommend
BEST MATH TEACHER AT OHLONE. He genuinely cares about students and wants everyone to learn and pass. He lets you retake quizes and the practice tests are very similar to the exams. He doesnt move on with lecture until he is sure that everyone understood the problem. I wish he taught trig, Id take him if I could. Definitely register to his classes
I am taking him again for 152! What can I say? Professor Rico is AMAZING. Come to class ready to participate and engage in the lectures. He is someone that truly cares about his students well being, he understands that life exists outside of his classroom.
Professor rico is such a nice and helpful professor! I've always been really bad at math, but professor rico teaches the subject really well and he's always willing to help! If you're hardeorking you'll get an A! 100% reccomend
Professor Rico is a true GEM. I need to take TRIG next year, but I wish he taught TRIG. He actually cares about his students. I will end up with a B, because I slacked off. Jose Rico is the greatest math professor I have ever had.
Math has always been my worst subject, I haven't gotten an A in math since middle school but Professor Rico is really just amazing. He's so helpful and caring and really wants you to succeed. Very understanding and he makes math seem so easy, this is coming from someone who HATES math. I can easily say Rico is one of the best teachers I've had.
One of the best if not the best math instructor I have ever had. Explains how to do things in multiple ways to ensure the most understand it. Creates problems specifically to help you learn the material better for homework instead of assigning a bunch of random problems from the text. Had free resources for students to use instead of bought books.
Huge emphasis in working in groups. Requires $115 dollar textbook/online program. Goes very slowly. We only made it halfway through the text book. As long as you show up to every class and do all the homework on time, it should be an easy A.
Rico is a kind and caring professor. This is my second time taking him. I've always have been good in math, however, I could have easily gotten over 100% in his class if I did all his homework. If your a math major I would probably avoid him as you can learn from others. If you are going for GPA and pre-req I would highly recommend him.
He is very caring and has plenty of office hours. You can always ask him for help. You don't have to attend class and you get infinite retries on the quizzes. He gives very little homework and a good amount of extra credit. Although, he can be a bit slow-paced if you already know the material. No textbook was purchased.
Professor Rico is understanding and wants you to pass his class. Participate, it helps him gauge the classes understanding. He teaches simply, sometimes you might get lost, but speak up and he will help you. Group quizzes were given. There is homework everyday, do it, you won't regret it in the end. Study the study guides for quizzes and exams.
Professor Rico was one of my favorites at Ohlone. Very passionate about students really understanding and doing well in the class. Explains things well, and is happy if come in during office hours. Lots of what I learned in his class was important in my business classes after I transferred to a CSU and it really stuck in my brain.
Really enjoyed taking this class! In my other statistics class, I wasn't doing too well, but in this one it's easy to receive help & ask questions without feeling judged. He lays out the material, explaining it well (will even make videos on how to do certain things), & letting you know what he expects. Great teacher! Stats makes more sense now.
Amazing professor, super caring about his students. Textbook is free (open source), course primarily revolves around project-based learning - reports and projects are the main graded assignments. Again, and I can't understate this, probably one of the nicest and most caring professors at Ohlone. Truly a gem.
Rico is such a kind, patient and helpful professor! Normal difficulty for a 5 unit course, but no midterms or exams, instead you will work through a software and turn in weekly reports. At the end of the year, those reports are submitted to become your final exam. ABSOLUTELY TAKE PROF RICO! ASKS LOTS OF QUESTIONS! HE KNOWS HIS STUFF!!
Professor Rico is honestly one of the best professors at Ohlone. His class was fun and a breeze to get through. He makes sure every student understands and is on the same page as him. I loved his class and would recommend it to anyone.
Remote and in person class might have different syllabuses. For his remote class, a few projects and weekly assignments need to be submitted. No quizzes or tests. Can get a good grade if directions are followed, carefully read over each lesson, and submit assignments and projects on time. He is very approachable and caring about students.
Professor Rico was a real gem! I really enjoyed Math 159 with him. No quizzes or tests, just a few PowerPoint presentations to make sure you understand the concept. He was so caring and his class was a lot of fun. High recommend.
EASY A! professor rico WANTS you to succeed. quizzes have so many opportunities for retake. no tests. classes are chill - lots of friendly conversation. i had over a 100% at the end. he is always available for office hours by appointment - u can even send him ur assignments to check before you submitting. SUPER easy "final". great class - take him!
He's hands down the best professor at ohlone. he allowed retakes for all his test, helps you with homework, takes the time to make sure each student understands. gives study guides before each test, he cares about us as people too! take him, you wont regret it.
SO understanding and WANTS you to succeed. Classes are chill and easygoing. Allows many retakes for quizzes. Strong emphasis on working in groups. EASY GRADER. Textbook was online + free! Not math-heavy. Lectures are extremely helpful, but if you still don't understand, he will help you, so ask questions. He values your learning over grades.
Very understanding professor. He really wants students to succeed, he offers many different retakes for quizzes to make up for a score. The grade is mostly made up of readings, quizzes, projects. Offers excellent feedback I totally recommend Prof. Rico.
Jose Rico is a really easy-going professor. He cares more about learning than grades. He allows retakes for quizzes, and almost always gives full score for assignments if he sees your effort in it. His class isn't super structured; more of a go-with-the-flow professor. You'll definitely learn a lot though. Good teacher, great person.
Professor Rico is the best teacher ever. He doesn't assign lots of homework or work in general. He actually cares about you learning the information instead of just throwing information at you. Gives multiple quiz retakes, will help you in class and outside of class, and is a really nice guy. Would definitely recommend, he makes stats easy.
Prof Rico is a very nice guy who cares more about his students learning than just memorizing things and spitting them on a paper. He gives plenty of retakes for quizzes and has a final project instead of a test. His class is pretty easy and the homework is simple. It's not a very math-heavy class and mostly deals with graphs and software.
No tests, just easy straightforward quizzes that he gives you practice quizzes for. He really makes sure to flesh out concepts so it's easy for someone like me who hates math to understand. TBH this stats class was more analysis than anything which was good. Easy grader and it's obvious he cares for his students. Take his class for credit!
I am terrible at math but professor Rico made this course easy & enjoyable! Seriously if you are looking for a Math 159 (intro to stats) class take prof Rico!!! Classwork was easy, we never really had h.w (besides one final project). When it came to the final project Rico was super helpful and gave us in class work days for any questions we had!!
Professor Jose Rico is a really nice guy, he's such a caring person. I love his learning concept about statistics and make mathematics easy to understand! :). He would also willing to help his students to get better grades, for example he was always gave his students many opportunities to make up the grades and make sure his students understand.
Best professor ever! Very considerate and cares about his students. You can really tell that he is passionate about his job. Material is fairly easy. There were a few group projects and he allows retakes on quizzes. I encourage everyone to join his class!
he was one of the nicest professors I have ever had! really cares about his students, you use a textbook but he always provides a free link to use it between assignments. I really recommend this teacher. His class gets full quick so be aware plenty of people end up on the waitlist if you do not register quick enough.
Prof. Rico is great. He has a lot going on atm but he still shows care for his students and the subject. He does ramble which takes up class time, so try to attend his weekly study sessions if you need it. 3 online quizzes (with cheat sheet), online modules, 1 written final (w/o cheat sheet). Would recommend!
Super caring prof! Is flexible with assignment deadlines as long as you communicate with him. He uses a free online textbook and is always providing supplemental videos and readings for those who need extra help. Lots of group projects (mainly statistical analysis given a prompt). Very easy lectures and assignments. Definitely recommend!
This guy is THE BEST. Math-156 with Prof Rico was so eye opening, it was very hands on and not like your average math class. In Math-156 we worked on solving patterns, creating our own patterns & more but you really just have to take this class for yourself to see how amazing it is!! Prof Rico is so caring and really wants his students to succeed.
Rico had a very relaxed teaching style which meant he would get sidetracked or not get through his lesson at some times. But he was very good at explaining the concepts and it was obvious he had his best intentions at heart. He offered to work with you if you got a bad grade on a quiz or test and wanted to make it up, and he accepted late work.
Professor Rico cares about whether his students are able to learn in his class and is always available for when you need extra help with assignments as well as quizzes. Lets you retake anything and accepts late work without deduction. Affective teaching style would definitely take more classes from him.
Professor Rico was a great professor. Prof Rico is really understanding and WANTS you to pass/ understand the material. Late work is accepted and full credit is still given. Overall, Rico was a great professor to take if you want a kind, caring prof. Also, make sure to pay attention and you'll be good because if you slack off you may get lost.
Mr Rico is a super good professor! Choose him and you will get a good grade!
Highly recommend Professor Rico. All class material you need is online and he is willing to answer any questions you have about it. If you need to retake quizzes he gives you opportunities to do so and even lets you turn in work late for full credit.
allows quiz retakes, goes over homework in class, responds to emails quickly and clear expectations.
Great Professor, quiz retakes for full credit , accepts late assignments for full credit, kinda picky on quizzes and assignments but will give you great feedback. take the class.
Prof Rico is the BEST math professor you could take at this college. Like others have said, he allows multiple quiz retakes, homework can be turned in late for full credit, and he doesn't have boring lectures but rather does his best to make class fun. It's clear he's passionate about the subject, and I promise always asking questions is rewarding.
His class is fun and interesting. You won't be scared of math in his class. You need to work closely with your partner/classmates and it could be painful if your partner doesn't contribute. There is text, it is not very hard or very easy, and you still need to work to get an A.
Prof Rico is really nice. There is one homework each week, a quiz per chapter. You get to retake the quiz as many times as you want. He's lenient with attendance and late work. He's laid out the course so it can be as easy as possible for the students. All of the class is based on using software which he explains how to use very clearly.
- made statistics less scary! - definitely an easy grader, i got multiple zeroes but still passed the class with an A - final exam was optional - very cool guy overall, would take this class again
The best professor. Take this class immediately. He's an excellent professor. He explains everything very well and grades accordingly. For all the LP's you can work with a partner except the final and personal project. I failed stat in high school bc of how hard it was but got an A in this class because of his way of teaching and helping. He cares.
There are literally no tests, 60% of your grade is based off quizzes that you can retake infinite amount of times, that he will literally walk you through and help you understand. He's such a caring prof and really just wants his students to learn. I didn't do any HW after the first month of school and still had an A. 10/10 prof
Jose Rico was one of the best professors I have ever seen. I took him for Statistics for SP of 2025. I am no math geek and I probably suck at math, but this professor made Statistics feel so much more manageable and fun to learn than I originally thought. Very easy A, just do good on checkpoints, worth 60% of grade, can redo them unlimited times.
i took statistics in fall 2024 with one professor and was the worst very hard for me but this one was the best much easier also got b but was rounded he was the best and he is the best to take take him for math not tracy vu, also I took Jose Rico for spring 2025 for math.
I strongly recommend professor Rico. He allows re-takes on checkpoints. He wants you to pass his class. Here is a quote from him "I don't like it when people drop my class". He said this because he really cares about his students learning and success. I have took statistics three times. The first two times I dropped. I got an A. This says a lot
It was pretty easy the first 3/4 of the class. It got difficult during hypothesis testing, bootstrapping , and art of stat.
89.8%. I only needed 3 points more to get an A
Left me 1 point shy of an A😭😭
I'm very bad at math, but still got an A because of this fantastic professor. He gives a lot of quizzes which can be retaken an infinite amount of times until you get an A. Professor Rico is very understanding and truly wants students to pass. The final is optional and can boost your grade a lot. If you put in the effort, you can easily pass.
