Awesome prof. Very funny, intelligent, and challenging. Shows some crazy films. The best dude.
Jose is a great professor. Very funny, intelligent, and helpful. The only problem I have is that sometimes it is hard paying attention because he isn't exactly hard on the eyes. Okay, who am I kidding?.......he is Hot! Love the class Jose.
cool guy, cool clothes, fast car, responsible for the production of the film 1000 coursepack, seems to have a quality of teaching surpasing that of any other professor i have ever had in my 20 year career as a university student!
Good teacher with a cool accent! Keep it up Jose!
How can you not like him? Total package for a professor; smart, funny, makes excellent use of the materials, fair marker, lots of feedback and keeps class's attention every time out.
Did not enjoy his class at all, ended up dropping it, poor and alenating course material, the class size dropped in half! Had a difficult time with anything other then gender issues inreation to the films
Jose is so funny! The class is kinda boring and the movies a little gross, but he's a cool prof.
I found this to be a tough course, but Jose made it enjoyable for sure. And he's got that perfect note-taking speed, as in, he'll pause after important stuff so you can write it down. I wish he would have picked films that were easier to rent for essays.
Romantic comedy is all we watch, need i say more.
keep it up PEPE!!!!!!!, awesome films badass lectures, all must take his class
if every movie we saw after christmas wasn't pertaining to the extreme forms of liberalism, then perhaps in our discussion groups there would be more discussion, without holding back due to offending personal beliefs
Jose is awesome!! He is bar none the coolest prof I have had this year. His choice in films was amazing, totally different than most I would normally watch. He has opened my eyes to a whole new film world. Thanx Jose!!!
I loved taking film this year. Jose did choose some crazy movies, but they were interesting and helped broaden our horizons. Jose is an interesting and entertaining prof who doesnt show us mainstream crap. Take his class for sure.
It was either Jose's film class orPhysics... I chose film, Physics might have been better... oh well at least we laughed alot...
An amazing class, for 2 reasons; 1)jose's sexy spanish accent and his facial hair 2)some of the best films I've ever seen (evening show, sex and lucia). Once you take a class with Jose your hooked for life, and loving it:)
The class was fun, The films ranged from mainstream to totaly F#cked up. Jose was funny in class or boring as hell, no middle ground with this guy. I wish he had some sort of re-screening of films we saw in class.
Took 1st year class when I was in 4th year. WORST PROF EVER. His lectures are unsturctured and do NOT reflect the material in the assignments or exams. His language barrier came into play when writing the exam. He also went over the class time often.
OMG I love Jose! Film 1000 is one of the most fun classes, and his accent adds a touch of madcap humour to the class. Wonderful screenings and extremely helpful in the face of adversity. VERY approachable. Love him!
terrible....enough said, needed a translator
He's an awesome prof. Yes he has an accent and it sometimes got in the way of things but overall he is a passionate, understanding, and extremly experienced professor.
he is very hard to understand, also he has some obsession with showing spanish films, it sucks because they are boring. His lectures are also really dry and boring
I can't lie, I'm starting to hate this class. If he says EH one more time, I might SCREAM
The worst prof I have ever had. I lost 900 bucks to that "Waste of My Time" CLass and also 6 months of my time. If you have him switch, he is not worth the pain.

Bahahaha Sanchez is so real and down to earth it's awesome! He's very enthusiastic which helps a lot (took course over the summer, which ran 4 hours a class twice a week... needed his enthusiasm to stay alive in his class). films run from NUTS to very good. he's fair. and a killer accent ;)
I have to disagree with my uninformed self-entitled white-boy xenophobes. Prof Sanchez does his best to open our minds to the different perspectives and possibilities that cinema can offer. Too bad for the stunted idiots who never rose beyond the social and intellectual capacity of daycare.
His accent is a little hard to get past, his screenings are okay, and sometimes he makes some pretty unnecessary comments (once in a while he tries too hard to be funny), but overall he is hilarious and better than a lot of the other profs.
Sometimes he is obsessed with Homosexuality and Queer theory. I found the guy who replaced for that one day, to be way better than Jose, he was much more interesting. Yeah he likes movies, but so what! Prof's must make the students have the same passion as he does!
jose's the man. his accent is at times tough to understand but always funny. the films were really good (minus a few borderline gay**** forgein films)...but he was super nice and funny.
He was a horrible prof. I don't know how the university hires someone who barely speaks english! Because he was gay he felt everyone else should understand his "gayness", even though it was a film class! Overall he was awful. I would never take him again!
Ignore the previous idiotic, homophobic posting. Yes, he has an accent, but he is perfectly understandable to anyone who is not mentally challenged. Yes, he shows a few films with homosexuals; is a professor who only shows straight films pushing his heterosexuality on us?
Amazing
The people who are critical of Jose on the basis of his accent or sexuality or both are obviously descendants of either a rural isolated enviroment or a primitive oppressed faction of the world. He's a amazing prof... PERIOD...
I really enjoyed this class. Jose did a great job and made the lectures both fun and educational. Great sense of humour and ability to engage the class. I highly recommend taking his class.
Very nice guy, very funny, made class enjoyable.
Hes very hard to understand sometimes, not just his accent, but his explainations are very vague the majority of the time. His fillm selection is questionable as well. Nonetheless, the class was somewhat enjoyable, and if you want to take film you can't really go wrong with this guy. I did however hear that the other class watch better films.
People need to get over the accent. Consider it something you need to get used to in college with profs. Jose is a great proff. He is fair and he is very good at making the content clear. He also tells you what he expects of you and is always around for help and is very organized. I enjoy his anticdotes in class as well. I highly reccomend him.
I really enjoyed this class. Especially since he tries so hard to engage the class and keep the mood fun and happy. He does show some pretty lame movies, but what film class doesn't. That's what film studies is all about! His accent is funny, and so are his jokes. I highly recommend him! Great Prof.
Sanchez has a sense of humor which is nice to see. Guys honestly, accent = NOT THAT BAD! His pop quizes were kind of annoying, but help you keep up with the readings(which is why he does them)so it really pays off in the long run(a couple of articles to read per week instead of a novel's worth of articles to read pre-exam) Two words: "SALON KITTY!"

funny guy!
Could be worse...like Choi.
Very hard for a 1st year. Hard even for a 4th year. Way too much work. Pop quizes/readings weekly, essays, presentations and 3 exams. He is condescending to his students and he tries to be funny. Way too much work-too much time-even when trying hard, hard to do well.
Great course, great teacher. He is fairly clear with concepts, despite the heavy accent. The quizzes were really easy 1-question quizzes. I can't believe people complain about such things.
10% of midterm was on an impossible question, extrememly hard prof to impress

I think he's hilarious. at least he tries to make it entertaining.
Professor Sanchez is sexy and hot and funny. His accent is charming. He is very helpful and understanding. I would love to have another class with him. I wish other professors are like him.
Dr sanchez is very knowledgeable and it is very pleasant to listen him talking. he is full of information and make it simple for everybody. I would recomment his class to all my friends.
This man is a golden god. Here's the thing, if you go talk to him he actually looks you in the eye and genuinely wants you to understand, dont be afraid, he tries to scare off the 1st years but if you make it through he is wonderful and an absolutely wonderful film professor. funny too!
Hilarious and interesting. Also very intelligent...a great prof for sure.
On midterm he had a question worth 10% which was purposely on there for everybody to fail (the director of cimenatography of one of the movies, totally random unknown fact anybody would know). Final essay was not clear enough on what it was supose to be since somehow only got 50%, as did many people I know. THIS IS NOT A BIRD CLASS. Beware!
Aside from the curious selection of mostly off-colour films, this course is bearable. Jose is amusing though slightly peculiar while students mostly interact with TAs who are generally somewhat intelligent. Tough final exam.
He is incredibly smart and especially aware, both in his course and as a person in general. His personality is too good to miss, making fun of his own course material and his accent at times, which really kept me motivated. He can take the most boring material and make it interesting. The material is a bit tricky, and he is a hard maker, but worth i
The best film prof at Carleton hands down. Sexy, smart and funny. A great class
Really great!
Jose is a great prof and he brings the material to your level. Everytime you knock at his door he is always there for you no matter what. He is very knowledgeable and competent. The best prof ever. Do you think I'm in love with him?
This man will change the way you look at film and at life! Interesting, smart, and understanding. Truly a key figure in the Carleton film school.
I have kept my minor in Film at Carleton solely to take courses with this Prof. He's an extremely intelligent man, and a gifted professor. Highly recommended!
He makes his lectures really funny and amusing. I enjoy attending his class
Great prof. Very good at explaining the material so that it is easily understandable but still encourages more in-depth thought. Very good lecturer as well.
I found Jose's class informative and entertaining...I never missed a lecture. Don't take this class expecting it to be a bird course, though, it's hard work.
Very engaging and entertaining lecturer. Those weekly quizzes were tough and his questions were extremely specific.
I loved this class so much I've decided to change my minor from history to film. Looked forward to every single lecture, didn't even feel like skipping once! Amazing prof, entertaining, accessible and he has awesome T.As. If you get the chance take his course for sure! NOT A BIRD COURSE but it is sooo worth the hard work! Keep it up Jose!
I agree that he has a sense of humor, and he does try and make classes interesting, however I also have to say that his quiz questions are extremely specific and sometimes impossible to answer. He does not respond to emails and assigns uneccessary amounts of reading. I honestly think he is one of our worst professors.
The nasaly Spanish accent is quite grating, and the man is a certifiable creeper...but compassionate and at least tries to be entertaining.
In general, he is one of the best professors I've had. To me, what defines a good professor is.. 1. keeping your attention for the longest time possible (in his case 2 hours, which broke a record thus far) 2. Assigning some mandatory work to keep you updated with the course.. his quizes might be a little tough, but it's worth it..
Inpossibly difficult. Very entertaining lectures and lots of note-taking. Essay topics often follow abstract ideas. Great film choices, but heavy workload.
Found the class extremely interesting but marking was WAY too hard! He would be very vague in class on definitions and concepts but very specific on the midterms and exam. Hard to fill in the blanks when you were never told what was in them!
Great teacher! This class was really interesting and was easy to get a great mark! If you show up you'll do really good, if you don't it will be reflected in your mark.
Great prof! His class is mind blowing! I'm in love with film studies because of him! Great lecture! My favorite prof of all time! You rock Jose! Love you!
Hilarious man. Intense and heavily theoretical readings/concepts, but we weren't really tested at all on them. 3 short papers and one big paper and no exams! His class was a pleasure to attend and I would take another one of his classes any day!
Has a hard time getting away from bringing in gender and sexuality issues into materials that are not suited to those readings. Also several spelling and grammar mistakes on the syllabus. Insisted in the first few classes that notes are not important because he posts the lectures but then gets mad that no one is taking notes
Fantastic prof. Tough but fair in terms of grading and rewards effort. Keeps a laid-back feeling in the classroom and encourages discussion, wants you to interact with the material in your own way. Every Film student should take a class with him.
Such a hilarious teacher, full of jokes and is very very passionate about film. Films were hit and miss some good some bad but overall a fun class. Workload was pretty easy and exams weren't too hard.
Excellent prof. Hilarious and easy to listen to. Must attend lectures to understand the slides, but can watch the movies at a later date. 1 hr lecture, 2 hr movies. DO NOT TAKE IT AT 8:30, YOU WILL NOT STAY AWAKE DURING MOVIES
Jose is a chill guy, he's also a big fan of Michael Bay and Julia Roberts
Took it as an easy elective, ended up screwing my GPA hardcore.
Honestly the best prof I have had, very interesting lectures, inspired me to go from taking this as an elective to making film part of my degree. Speaks clearly and gives interesting assignments.
Hilarious & he has great taste in movies as well as being so knowledgeable about them - I loved all but 1 of the films shown this year (Gus Van Sant's Psycho, but José admitted it was a bad film). He makes the info very clear-cut and 2 of 3 tests he gave us were easy (the middle one was brutal). I got to write my term paper on Wes Anderson, too! :D
Definitely very knowledgeable about film and a talented lecturer. The class wasn't for me, but if you're interested in the material and willing to put in a decent amount of work, you will pass. His class is not meant to be an easy elective, but if you take it you will learn quite a bit.
One of the few Profs I actually respected & liked. Class was extremely enjoyable and you really did learn a lot. He's a really passionate Prof who also cares about his students, but absolutely does not spoon-feed. He wants you to work hard and do well and he genuinely cares. He tries to seem intimidating, but if you need an extension, he'll give it
Glad 2 b a Film 1000's student
This guy is the reason I changed my major to film. Seriously one of the best lecturers I've had. Hilarious, knowledgeable, and his passion for the material is obvious and infectious. I only wish he taught MORE classes at Carleton! He loves people who participate, so speak up in classes. Also, be ready for a lot of Julia Roberts jokes. GREAT guy!
Jose's lectures were 3 hours long. 1 hour lecture followed by 2 hour movie. His lectures were straight forward, was constantly cracking jokes, passionate and everything he talked about made sense in regards to the contents of Film. The only issue were regarding the T.A.'s who all marked quite differently from one another, but Jose himself is great!
By far worst class I've ever taken. Incredibly disorganized, no clear directions on assignment requirements, with no feedback on what you did wrong. Assignments take forever to be marked and returned, if returned at all. Do not recommend.
Funny guy. Assignments and tests were a bit tougher than expected, but an enjoyable class overall.
I dropped this class after the first semester. Jose was only there part of the time and read directly from the slides with little elaboration. You need to watch the movies, and he also assumes that students do the many readings- which are boring- as you are expected to be knowledgable and analytical about the films.
I never missed a class
I'm in for Electrical Engineering and took this course because it looked easy. Not only did Jose make it seem easy, he made it a lot of fun. He really cares about his students, and, rather than simply "lecture", he teaches. He's also been known to sneak up and wish you good luck, should he find you hastily reading Film notes an hour before an exam.
Sanchez is a great prof. Very funny, and keeps the lectures interesting. Even if the film we watched wasn't that great, the lecture was worth it. The guy cares about his students. Few tips: Note down the theories mentioned in the lectures (they always show up on tests), and be respectful during the lectures
Easily the worst professor I've had at Carleton. Lectures are boring and empty, assignments extremely vague, and the grading inconsistent. It really just seems as though Mr. Sanchez does not care at all about teaching, and I feel like it would be good for everyone involved if he retired. Do yourself a favor and don't take his class.
I did well in this class but I am not impressed with Sanchez at all. If you want an accessible prof dont take his class. I emailed him and the TA 4 days before the final exam was due with questions regarding the exam. I received a reply 3 days after the due date and he even called me by the wrong name in the email. Lectures are boring too
Just Don't Take His Class Please!
I haven't had him for 4 years but my time was memorable I had to come back to review him. He is way too funny to be a professor. If you love movies he makes lots of great references. The only way you wouldn't love him is if you didn't love movies.
