class is hard. he is nuts. boring, his grading suck. he lectures in the lab for crying out loud.
Stay away!! Is not good at explaining things, is arrogant and sarcastic as all hell !!!
He is an awesome stats teacher because he explains things very well and throughly, but he's a self-proclaimed ****. He is a nazi when it comes to grading. I dislike him because he penalize you for not following the rules. "YOU MUST FOLLOW THE RULES". Attendence is mandatory and he won't let you out early. :*(
Some of the comments below make absolutely no sense. First, college is not supposed to be easy. Second, since stats is in lab, where else is he going to lecture? Third, if the instructions explicitly specify to follow instructions, what's the problem? We're supposed to follow instructions anyway, even if they are not explicitly stated.
If you show up to class, turn in the assignments on time, pay attention in class you'll pass the class. He's straightforward about his method of grading, and explains the material step by step. It may take more effort then other classes, but what do you expect from a stats class?
He's not a difficult professor at all. By far, the best math prof I've had here. As long as you attend his class, and study the material, you'll be alright. He also does his best to ensure that his students pass his class by offering lots of extra credit. I received a B, but I'm sure it could have been an A had I studied like I should have.
Awesome kinda of hard so u hve to really study gives lots of x.c. do all ur hw study for finals and hes very approachable just the way he tlks is kinda smug but if u ignor it then he's really clear about what he wants.
Professor Tabares is amazing. I came into the class expecting a boring class about statistics and yet I received a fulfilling and interesting experience. Statistics was actually fun and Jose made it enjoyable and understandable. Truly one of my favorite classes. You just need to put in your own effort and time to study. It IS college after all.
Your grade depends on how much effort and time you put in the class. He is just there to profess and makes the class and concept enjoyable w/ his humor. Offers extra credit so take advantage of it! 1st day of class he acts like a meanie but it is just an act though. Quizzes almost every other day to make sure you read/learned the lesson.
He really taught the subject well. Statistics is a hard and boring subject anyways. If it's a major requirement, take him for the stats! Attendence is mandatory.
He is very funny! May seem mean but is not at all. I don;t like math but he taught it extremely well. He is funny and makes us laugh so the class isn't too boring. 3 Tests, and final. Quiz every other day. Read book to get quiz right. Offers extra credit after each test. Do it! I recommend you take him.
He's not the best, but he is a good professor overall. Attendance, homework is mandatory. May seem a little intimidating, but he helps you to the best of his ability. He's not my favorite, but he's the true meaning of a hard-working professor.
jose is an amazing teacher. He comes off as mean but he really is just trying to discipline us to not only make us better students but better people. If you study then you will succeed. Definitely recommend if you want to learn the material and are willing to put in the effort
He's one of the best teachers had so far at csulb. Just read the book and come to class! You'll do great on all of his exams and quizzes. There's really no reason you can fail his class unless you're jus purely lazy! Anywho, i highly recommend him for SOC 250!
Tabares does come off mean but he really tries to help you. His lecture and powerpoints are really helpful. Do his hw, it really helps you for the exams. We have quizzes each time we cover a chapter but as long as you read, you'll be fine. Overall, class is easy if you do your work and study and the material really isn't hard.
Dr. Tabares is tough but real. There is a quiz every time a chapter has been finished so make sure to read the book. He teaches the class well and you will learn more than math. He is willing to go beyond the classroom to make sure you understand. Take him if you want to get you basics in stats down.
Good teacher, but he is really rude & thinks he knows everything. Don't get me wrong he is smart but he brags on & on & on... Read chapters & read test questions you can go to him for help if you need. Also might have to debate with him a little. Even though he is a good teacher he is FREAKING RUDE, if you don't mind that, take him and good luck.
Vey nice professor. He gives u 1pt fir showing up to class every meetingthere is a chapter quiz every week worth 10pts each. Homework worth 2 pts each, and he does check ur hw! So make sure its done! midterms 50 pts each and final is 60 pts. He is always available durung office hours and not scary! Textbook is mandatory.
He is very good at teaching stats. He is willing to help don't be afraid to visit him in office hours. Read the chapters he quizzes you on them. Do the hw its easy points.
Jose is so helpful and is a great teacher! He makes statistics interesting and easy. There are quizzes for every chapter so make sure you read, takes attendance, and tests are straightforward. He is very funny and down to earth. He is not rude at all, he just wants to get people engaged and interact with his students.
He can come off as a bit condescending and a bit intimidating, but he truly cares about his students. He does everything he can to push his students.
Awesome, hilarious guy with a lot of good stories but this class was HARD. He's very available to help and tries to make everything clear but he's very rigorous in the amount of readings and assignments. Tests are multi-faceted and difficult. I guess if you want to be a stats god it's worth it but if you just want to pass look elsewhere.
I do agree that he is quite condescending. He does not allow you to use equation sheet on the test and expects you to know everything in short amount of time. Unless you have strong interest in statistics, I would not recommend him.
I'm glad I had him as a prof. I found the class to be interesting bc he makes it engaging by relating the content with things we are familiar with. He is funny and is not rude at all. Statistics is challenging; your grade depends on you to review the chapters and how much effort YOU are willing to put. He does everything necessary to help!
Tabares is a professor to take if you want to change your learning habits. Jose tells you everything you need to know to be successful in the course. No tricks- just really trying to guide you well. Not to mention he knows about every random topic and is pretty funny!
Class was alright, easy pass. You have to work harder to get an A but you can practically do nothing to study and still pass. Jose was by far my least prof. His comments are condescending. Acts like he's the smartest person to walk on this earth. Makes you feel like crap. His way or the highway. Ruined my day to be in that class. Hated him 100%.
I don't blame him, I blame this class. It requires a lot of work and is not an easy subject to begin with. He is always available to help in office hours, USE IT. Group research paper blows but it is manageable. Read the text, go to class, pay attention and you will pass. I learned SO MUCH.
Tabares is awesome but the class sucks. He makes himself VERY available, so if you don't pass it's because you didn't put in the work. He posts all powerpoints and notes and will answer all your questions. Only criticism: you can't choose your group members, so you might get stuck with crappy people who do little and piggyback off your work .
He is condescending often times. Because of that, he hardly admit his mistakes during lectures or on quizzes. If you detect any mistakes on the quiz, "YOU" have to let him know.
Dr. Tabares is one of those professors that goes above and beyond to make sure his students succeed. He tells you what you have to do and as a college student it is your responsibility to succeed or not. Not an Easy A because the subject matter, but if you don't pass it is your fault-not his. Funny as well and has done cool research!
He is really specific on what he you could do to pass his class with a good grade. He is really helpful when you do not understand something. Really dedicates time to help you with anything you are having trouble with. Never get bored in his class because he makes lectures instructing and is really fun. As loon as you go to class and try you pass.
He was very full of himself which could get annoying. He is a good at explaining concepts and answered any questions students would have which was really good but the really dumb thing is that we had reading quizzes........... in a math class??????
A professor that actually teaches how to solve a problem. Solves problems in class, gives tutorials. Memorize all the formulas and you'll be good to go. def would take again, HIGHLY RECOMMEND
He is always accessible during office hours & wants to see participation. Can be slightly sarcastic but he's funny. He made the 2 hours of math (a subject I have always dreaded) fly by. Prepare to read. Quizzes are text specific, he quizzes on how how well you read. You dont have to be a good test take to pass, just show up and do the homework
Listen- for all people needing a stats class, I HIGHLY recommend Jose. He is very clear on the class requirements, and on the first day, he literally broke down how to do the bare minimum and pass with a C. He is a really funny guy who loves sarcasm. The class material isn't very hard at all, and if you pay attention, you will surely get a B or up
Dr. Tabares is a great Stats professor. He is always available during office hours, and is gladly to help with anything you need. Makes his lectures interesting and fly by. Breaks down material very careful for a clear understanding. The material isn't hard at all as long as you pay attention. Would definitely recommend.
Really breaks down the lecture information. Has a course packet that is required. It has all the notes you need to write on, homework assignments, and study guides. Exams are exactly like lecture and homework problems. Textbook is required and is pretty funny. 3 exams, 17 quizzes but 3 lowest are dropped, and a final. Willing to help students.
Jose is such a good professor. Starts off the course by telling you what you need to pass the class with at least a C. Always available during office hours and will help you out in whatever you need. HE IS NOT CONDESCENDING JUST SARCASTIC AND FUNNY. Easy A if you do all homework, do good on the quizzes and always show up. I recommend!
Professor Tabares is a good guy, wants to help all his students as much as possible even when students aren't enthusiastic about it. There's homework, reading, and an online quiz with every chapter but it honestly helps to understand the concepts but what he's really great with are his lectures. One exam every four chapters, four exams total.
Tabares's class moves fast, if you don't get the previous chapter, you will fall behind. Participate as much as possible, as all points make a difference in your final grade especially attendance and quizzes. For extra help, use the sources from the end of each chapter of the textbook and notes to fully understand concept. Good luck and have fun!
Professor Tabares really cares about his students and is willing to help. He teaches each chapter in detail and gives lot of examples for students to understand. He tries his best to be enthusiastic even if his students are not. I definitely recommend taking him if you want to get better in statistics and challenging yourself.
Just. Take. This. Class. You will not regret it. i promise.
He puts you in the spot everyday. I could not concentrate because I felt intimidated all the time. Was not the only one who felt that way. Do NOT take if you are shy. Forces you to go to office hours for points. He gives you reading quizzes every chapter that is 10%. Homework is 15% attendance 10% test 45% final 20%.
If you are shy this class is not for you. He put everyone on blast all the time. One time I came in late and he stopped the lecture to wait for me to sit down. He makes you go to his office hours. He does not care to hurt anyone's feelings or put them in an awkward situation. I was nervous to sit in his class and could not concentrate because of it
He cares about his students. He gives you 2-3 opportunities to get extra credit. He gives quizzes for every chapter and there are so easy, just read. if you have lecture before lab is better because most of the time he gives out the answer during lecture. He tries his best to be enthusiastic. I definitely recommend taking his class.
it is ridiculous that in a math class you have to read ALOT! There is 10Q quizzes for every chapter. There is homework for every chapter. You must go to his office hours to prove that u have read the syllabus. He provide e.c for every test and u must turn it in his office hours. First test easy the rest hard. Final Is worth the most.
Class is straightforward. His handcrafted notes make each chapter easier to understand and ensures that each one of his students understands the material before moving on. Your grade depends almost entirely on the unit tests, but if you attend the lectures and study, you're good. Makes math for us arithmetically inept liberal arts folk enjoyable.
Easily one of my favourite professors! He puts a lot of time and effort into his lectures and notes, plus he actually cares if his students to pass. The class is definitely passible as long as you read and come to class. Professor Tabares is always available during office hours and easy to approach and ask for help.
Claims he won't treat you like you're in highschool yet treats you like you're in HS. A lot of tedious work. Homework and quizzes for every chapter and those are a big portion of your grade. Do the HW and test are easy. It's an easy A if you put in the work for it
Prof. Tabares is a very wise person. He truly cares about his students! He is very good at explaining mathematical concepts. I would highly recommend taking him!
Took him a few semesters ago, at the time this class was stressful for me because I have always struggled with numbers, However, as much as he pushes you and may demand a lot he truly does care and is passionate about what he does, he has a gift for teaching he knows exactly how to break everything down. Work hard, ask for help, and READ. Take him!
I took Professor Tabares this semester and I can honestly say he has a gift for teaching! He is good at explaining things and teaches in a way students will understand. Professor Tabares is very professional, responsible, and funny. He uses class time wisely and you learn a lot! I will truly miss his class.
Professor Tabares genuinely cares about you passing. There are quizzes and homework after every chapter and 3 unit test. You need to go to class to pass, but his class is honestly not that hard if you show up. I thought this class would suck since I took it at 8 AM, but it was totally worth taking.
He is wise and very knowledgeable in his field. HE IS THERE TO HELP, ask for it. Everyone complaining about being put on the spot, please grow up. This is college, he asks for answers and if you don't know, it's your fault. Late? Your fault. Put in the work. Could have gotten an A, but I slacked a little,my fault. Overall great teacher! Also funny
Professor Tabares makes statistics a piece of cake the way he dummy downs the material. He takes attendance, homework for every chapter as well as quizzes, and four tests including the final. The hardest part in my opinion was memorizing all the formulas since he doesn't give it to you on tests. Funny guy but class sometimes felt like high school.
Take his class/. He is so funny. He makes statistics so easy to learn.
Impossible to sit in this class and feel good about yourself. Worst professor ive had to this day.. by far. Makes horrible comments and singles you out daily. Work load is heavy and gives possibly the worst instructions possible. Makes you go to office hours to turn in a sheet of paper and is impossible to schedule with him. Dont take him! Ever!!
this guy is really funny, makes class enjoyable & doesn't fail to be a great teacher, he makes statistics as easy as possible to learn & I would take him again w/ no doubt. he is a genius & knows what he's talking about, not an easy A but definitely not impossible, anyone can get an A if they really try and listen to what he says. take him forsure
He's is willing to help you pass his class. You HAVE to read the book. There's a quiz for every new chapter and the exams are almost alike as the guides he provides you but you have to make sure you understand the concepts otherwise the test will be hell. Your grade depends on 3 exams, a final, quizzes, attendance and homework assignments.
Quizzes every class but if you bs the reading and look over the notes you can do well on them. Make sure you show up, do all homework, and do well on quizzes and you'll pass bc. exams aren't a big % of your grade. He's nice until you disagree with him and then he needs tone right but otherwise he's a decent teacher.
He totally wants you you to pass this class!
Jose can be funny, but I personally didn't feel that his lectures were that enjoyable. His lectures are very long and sometimes super confusing or unclear. He is also very sarcastic, so you have to have somewhat tough skin. If you're looking for an easy A, this class isn't it, but still obtainable. Do the reading and PAY ATTENTION to the lectures.
Overall I do not like his attitude. During this pandemic and online learning he makes lecture seem longer. He requires to have your mic and camera on, which is an issue for some. He makes too many unnecessary jokes in class, and over explains simple things. I did not understand most of his lecture, as I relied more on the book, and yt for exams.
Honestly one of the easier classes I had this semester. The lectures were very long and you have to leave your camera on. But overall this class was very easy to pass. He gives you a study guide before each test that really helps with the exams and will take the time to meet with you outside of class if you need extra help.
The professor was excessive, he would lecture beyond what was necessary and go extreme in some stuff. He often ranted or went off-topic. The sarcasm was unnecessary. I dreaded going to this class because of his lectures and him. He had this snobby attitude about everything and said something like everyone would fail and I would still get paid.
His class is passable, however you will have to teach yourself a lot because he tends to go on long tangents, about anything other than math. His lectures are tedious, be prepared to be called on at random. He does give study guides that are very similar to the test so thats a plus. Attendance is mandatory as he does give attendance points.
You need to have your camera on or else he would pick on you. He is not very understanding of technical difficulties. If you have bad connection, he makes you feel terrible about it. He wants participation but if you ask a question, he makes you feel stupid and doesn't answer it. Very unproductive lectures and goes on super confusing tangents.
Joses class was not only unbearable, but it was 2 hours and 20 minutes long just so he could go on multiple 20 minute random tangents. He made participation very uncomfortable and would directly call you out on appearance, background, facial expressions, or if you don't laugh at his jokes(which were usually inappropriate, boastful, or offensive).
He gives good feedback on homework but he likes to take up all two hours and a half of class time (sometimes even more) because he talks about random things and over-explains everything (which just makes the lesson more confusing). He makes you feel dumb when you answer something wrong. He is also very sarcastic and calls people out for no reason.
Terrible. So terrible im not even going to take up time writing how terrible. Just don't take his class. Worst teacher I have ever had in all my years of schooling, literally don't understand how he still has a job. He loves to tell you how smart he is too, which is genuinely funny.
This class was honestly not as bad as I thought. Prof Tabares is really funny and caring! Don't let these other reviews scare you trust me, as a person who sucks at math, he takes you through everything step by step to make sure you understand everything. drops your 3 lowest quiz grades, gives out hw answers, and gives study guides for each exam.
He will actually help you understand the chapter. He takes his time and explains it in different ways so you can understand. Take advantage of his office hours, super helpful. I don't want to rant, but he also has a nasty personality (imo). He will belittle you and make you feel dumb. He will always remind you that he is "smarter" than you.
Quizzes every chapter, almost one every class except for the chapters he spends more time on. Four exams, no cumulative final. Written part of the exams are easy, multiple choice is based on the book. He walks around when we do practice problems and will question why you are doing something wrong or if you are lost. Dislike his personality/ego.
He is extremely sarcastic to the point that he will literally make you question everything. Makes inappropriate jokes. He is accessible outside of class and is way nicer during his office hours. Quiz after every chapter (we did one chapter per class) and an exam every four chapters. Be careful with his multiple-choice questions!
Super sarcastic but knows his stuff!! He's very knowledgable about stats and his lecturing goes in depth to the concepts so show up to class. This class is not the easiest so make sure your reading chapters before class and doing the study guides, putting in effort, and asking for help. You have quizzes after every chapter that he finishes.
The anecdotes in class make stats enjoyable and the professor cares. Show up to class if you want to pass. Super easy if you pay attention and reads the chapters before class (chapters are short)
If you read the book, the class is really easy. He's one of those sarcastic professors that joke around in class (may be perceived as rude), but he really is a sweet guy if you reach out & ask for help. Do the reviews and homework, because it is literally the exam..like the same questions. If you can take his sense of humor, you're fine!
He's a really good professor, I'm not the best at math, but he genuinely wanted us to understand his course. He can be perceived as rude but honestly just don't take things to heart. As long as you stay on top of his work and pay attention throughout the class, you should be okay. I suggest creating a study group to make things easier.
Lecture heavy quiz every class. Pay attention and you'll be good.
I'm lowk stupid but his class was relatively easy. Read the book (or at least skim it) and study the formulas before exams and you'll pass. He will put you on the spot sometimes, so get ready to laugh his jokes off. He can be pretty lenient sometimes, he let me get full credit for hw that was 2 weeks late even tho i didnt have a doctors note
as a quiet psych major, tabares made class fun and interesting. don't let other reviews scare you, he is a nice guy with a good heart who just wants to help you understand math and make you laugh in the process. workload wasn't bad, but go to class! just participate in class or just shout out an answer. i enjoyed his class a lot :)
Okay so I had him fall semester and he was kind of rude but don't let that scare you because after some time he was pretty fun especially the cat videos he gave and as a person who struggles with math he was really good at explaining.
His jokes definitely aren't for everyone. He lectures very well and makes stats an easy class, but he does tend to yap for a majority of the class. He can get in your personal space or kind of pick on you to joke around and if you aren't comfortable with that, probably don't take this class. Otherwise, his class is an easy A.
take this professor! You need to put in the effort to learn but if you try and participate in class you will pass with an A. He cares for everybody to pass and to learn about the material. He makes a lot of jokes and yapps a lot in class but other than that he is funny and kind, I like all his jokes that he makes. I would take him again if I can.
you have to put in the work in to get an A. prof is chill and funny, as a shy person I enjoy the class. 3rd exam was the easiest. we have 10 question quizzes after every chapter but they're easy if you read the book. hw is easy as well. as someone who hates math, I like this class. I have an A for now, but i still need to do the final exam.. :(
I enjoyed this class a lot! He is very intimidating the first two weeks but then chills out later. Very funny & likes to talk, but is great at teaching. Takes attendance everyday & you get points for it - make sure you come prepared. Read ch. before class, goes over it in lecture and then take a short quiz everyday. put in work and you'll be fine
dr. tabares was okay. he was funny yes, but honestly he can be a little out of pocket sometimes which can make you uncomfortable. his exams are half written and half multiple choice. if multiple choice isn't your strong suit, i would suggest not taking this class because there are quizzes every week.
Bro was actually so funny and a decent teacher. You can tell he cares about his students and wants you to succeed, and he tries to motivate you and participate. Honestly, he made math bearable, as someone who hates math and is not good at it. I got a D on every exam except the final and still got a B- in the end. The course itself made me cry a lot
His intimidating vibe goes away the longer it goes in the semester. Jose is hilarious, kind, but does assign homework regularly. Homework does help out in practicing for the test, though you have to memorize the majority of the formulas. If you want an easy GE, it might not be the one, but if you really want to learn and excel, he's there to help.
He is funny and engaging he tries his best to get you to enjoy his class. There are daily quizzes and the exams are half multiple half problems. It's important you study lots of the vocab for the exams along with formulas. and read the required readings before class. He's organized but he can be mean and exams are hard I almost failed
He's a good professor. Had his class on Fall of 2024 I just forgot to rate him lol but he's a good teacher, very honest and sometimes can sound rude but it's just the way he demonstrates that it's just all about trying. I do recommend for you to read the chapter assigned they will definitely help a lot in the quizzes. Just put in the work!
Two quizzes a week, homework heavy, and attendance matters. Very great as a professor, but there was no reason to be stressing so much for this class. If you want to take statistics, take it with someone less degrading and more understanding.
The course is all cumulates to into a final paper that about 20 pages, he tries to be funny engaging but at times can come off as arrogant. He is not very tech savy most of the assignments need to be turned in person. He wasn't my favorite professor, I learned a lot from his course.
Jose is an interesting fella for sure, he has a habit of dragging his lectures to be unnecessarily long, and he does this by complaining about random things and telling stories that have nothing to do with the class. He comes off as super passive aggressive sometimes and makes people not want to participate in his class.
Jose might be an intimidating and driven man, but he has it where it counts. I for one have never seen a teacher head bang to Maroon five whilst impersonating a werewolf, but Jose shatters that stigma. Born to be a gender studies major, forced to be a psych major - Jose doesn't just teach, he enacts. Just know when he says stand up, you STAND tf up
he's definitely something. his class is easy to learn if you try. he is such a great professor which is so sad because he's so mean. he goes off topic and drags the class out. daily quizzes and lots of reading. his notes are very helpful, and he wants participation above all. he's definitely interesting.
listened to him talk for over 2 hours straight twice a week and he never failed to remind us how smart and rich he was. giant ego, but he knows what hes talking about and is a decent teacher. he will make you feel stupid when asking questions yet complains no one asks for help. workload is a bit but if you lock in a decent grade is achievable
Good at teaching and funny. However stressful at times because of how much reading and homework we have. Find classes sometimes waste of time, boring, and useless because of how much he rants about useless stuff. But knows how to keep class entertained.
Jose makes it super easy to learn STATS, he makes class engaging and easy to understand. There are quizzes at the end of each chapter, but don't get freaked out by them, it's easy if you pay attention and understand the lecture! I would recommend taking this course, he cares about his students and is passionate about teaching.
Not nearly as bad as people make him out to be. If you do what he says, you'll do good; the class is really straightforward. Tends to yap a lot but it's not that bad. He knows his stuff (and he's not afraid to let you know that every lecture) and he designs the class to make it really easy to pass (or even get an A). He's funny sometimes.
Makes inappropriate remarks in class and relates it to made up studies. He will never let you forget he is smarter than you. Do not take this class unless you want the homework and studying to consume you for the entire semester. If you ask for questions in class be prepared to be belittled and degraded for not already knowing the answer.
He I hard but he makes it very possible to pass the class. I was initially intimidated by him but he is actually a very caring professor that wants his students to learn.
