SOUNDS LIKE RICKY RICARDO..offers no help but is very nice in labs..nice but dont take this class..
Whatever, I had the highest grade in the class and I still walked out with an A-. Lame.
Was one of the most difficult professors I had
I would have to say that Vites' Chem class is probably one of my least favorite classes that I have ever taken. His lectures were very unclear and he offered very little in the way of help to his students. Also his grading scale was very messed up and most students ended up with lower grades than they expected.
Helpful but disorganized. Lectures unfocused.
He sucks at teaching. Its hard to hear what he is saying because he is studering. He makes you do group activites 2 minutes left in class. Also he arrives late for tests
not helpful, grading was comfusing, test were ridiculous
Very helpful (with some crazy systems and assigments). Very willing to make you understand. Unfortunately, he is very confusing. If you like organization (with deadlines and schedules), i suggest taking someone else.
Yeah this guy is pretty much one of the worst professors i have had. Pretty much all the teachers in the chem department suck, it is not just him. He is very unclear, but a bunch of crazy assignments and a relatively easy test format make this class very doable with a little study time.
I really liked him, every time I had a question, he answered it very, very thoroughly, almost to the point where it was too much. He really helped me understand many concepts. The only thing that was kind of crappy was that we had to have completed, corrected pre-labs before attending class, if not we couldn't participate.
Very smart, knows his stuff, but easily distracted. Overall, a kind and understanding teacher who showed an over-and-beyond level of concern for his students.
Teaching and tests are ok but he's horrifically disorganized. Uses multiple websites with no instruction. Has idiotic mandatory daily evaluations which he then ignores. Can't get through a problem in class without screwing it up. A horrible class overall. I pretty much hate this guy.
The evaluations ARE read and he replies to all of them. easy points! I never looked at the book but sometimes online in wiley plus. i thought he wasn't so bad until a difficult chapter and then got frustrated. he has one method of teaching and that is all. doesn't reply to emails. not the greatest prof but better than kolopajlo, avoid kolopajlo!
He is a relatively good prof for lab. Prepared and knowledgeable. Helpful when you ask him a question and you dont expect him to do the work for you. The lab GA's are a joke. You cant understand them at all and the girl couldnt help at all, she will tell you to do the wrong thing and it will screw up the whole experiment.
he isnt that great at teaching in class but go see him one on one and he is a LOT better and clears stuff up! have him in lab and he is a lot of fun in lab. if you joke around he will do it with you, very nice. HARD CLASS THOUGH!! GRADING IS ON A CURVE WHICH IS AWESOME. my gpa went down with him but i still like him!
He was very disorganized, but very nice and also willing to help. I did not understand the way that he teaches, and his tests were sooo ROUGH!
Real nice old guy. Smart, too, but just can't seem to get the information out to the class in a understandable fashion. Not a language problem, just a teaching issue. Goes too fast sometimes too (uses pre-made slides.)
I feel Vites is a knowledgeable teacher but has a horrible teaching approach. When he uses his slides, there are mistakes. Also, he won't display all the the steps in solving with equations and he pulls numbers out of no where. Homework is expected to be completed before he even covers it and he doesn't go over the homework. AVOID TAKING!
Dont expect to understand anything that this guy says. Prior chemistry knowledge is a must if you want to pass this course. He is very knowledgeable on this subject but tends to over think the questions asked in class.
He definitely seems to know what he's doing but he is god awful at explaining anything. He just puts slides up and briefly explains them. Definitely don't suggest unless you are really good at chemistry before entering. I learned a lot more from the book and looking around on the internet than in his lectures.
One of worst 3 profs I've had. 4 out of 6 of my group changed majors b/c of him. I almost did. Gave work, didn't grade it on time so people lost points later in semester b/c no feedback. Terrible lectures. Just a horrible horrible teacher. Shouldn't be allowed to teach beginning students b/c he turns people off science. 2nd worst prof in chem dept.
Without the TAs this class would have been much harder. The pre-lab lectures are extremely dry, but helpful. I would recommend Chem 115/116 to non-science majors, but you're going to have to work at the labs.
Not helpful in the lab with techniques and had very high expectations of lab reports. And inconsistent in grading throughout the semester.
Work load was inappropriate. Uses forum site which is not helpful to learning. Has serious problems with English and is reflected sometimes in grading. Uses online tests which are near impossible to pass. Gets hung up on minor points and technology issues. PowerPoint slides were helpful though. Books were useless. Reads from slides almost verbatim.
DO NOT TAKE. I love Chemistry and I am perfectly willing to do all the work involved to pass. There was NO clear timeline for work due, NO rubrick and peer grading of h/w, and we were on h/w for Chp 15 while in class we were on Ch 11. I need to understand chem and he was horrible. The Book they chose had the wrong answers in the back as well! AVOID
I had a really hard time in this class. He lectures on basic Chem concepts, but his tests are all math problems that you wouldn't be able to do without a lot of practice, and which he expects you to teach yourself how to do from the book. He also expects his students to have memorized chemical nomenclature, which is kinda ridiculous for 117.
Very nice and helpful teacher, but a lot of work (discussion board posts, book reading, work out problems). You will learn a lot though!
He's not really a good lab instructor. I came late to lab 1 minute and i lost 5 points out of 20 because he said i was late. Really, one minute? Obviously doesn't care about student's success. He speaks in a monotone voice so very boring and hard to pay attention. Pick someone else for lab. You might run late a couple seconds and lose 5 points.
This guy never answers emails or comments in class. Lab report are not returned until the end of the semester. This is really a teach-it-to-yourself-or your're-screwed class.
Will mark down points for any reason he feels like ie incorrect capitalization in homework's and everyone in your group will lose points. DO NOT take this teacher he will bring your GPA down.
The way that he taught the class was not of great quality. He never clearly answered questions that we had and the things things that he barely mentioned in class were the things that were on the test. I am taking my final tomorrow and I have yet to receive my last test back. He takes his time grading everything and he is never prepared.
His grading is very harsh. If you do not write your answer down step by step, you will not receive any points because he will claim that you copied out of the ck of the book, even if it is as simple as 2+2. He does not return tests in a timely fashion. He also tries to get us to start in class assignments with about 10 minutes left for class.
He is not a good instructor in any way. He wouldn't respond to emails, even when i asked if he received it, he would say yes but then didn't explain why he didn't respond. He never gives very clear instructions. He doesn't review for tests even when we ask. If the class didn't answer a question correct he would criticize us. Avoid him at all cost!
Can't teach, or at least not well. He sends you to Khan academy and gives you assignments without explaining them and just expects you to know it and understand it. His due dates are off and the class just doesn't flow.
I attend every class and barely know what is going on. His lectures barely touch on the criteria that he expects us to understand for both homework and tests. He assigns mass amounts of assignments including but not limited to, worksheets, online assignments, and online quizzes. The structure of class is completely unorganized. Wouldn't recommend.
Terrible teacher, goes off topic, not helpful at all.
Possibly the worst Chemistry professor ever. Never gave clear instructions, never lectured. Vites expects students to understand chemistry by watching Khan Academy videos and reading the book, he never explains topics in class except for the last 2 chapters. I also had a hard time understanding him due to his accent. Stay away by all means!
Wow, wish I would have did some research before getting into this mess. This was one of the worst classes I've taken thus far. He will not work with the students. There was no SI for the course. No study sessions. Study guides did not prepare for the exam. Participation & attendance count. Didn't curve either exam after have a 65% average twice!
this class was mandatory for my major and I considered changing majors or taking it at another school. AWFUL professor. they need to find a new professor for this course. don't ruin your gpa over this guy. he is not there for your success.
He wastes so much time doing pointless things before a lectures. He spent an entire class trying to figure out how the projection screen works, gave us the history of a baker's dozen and didn't even get to the lesson needed for the day. On top of all that, he is dyslexic and can't do basic math without being corrected. Don't take a class with him!
His lectures are unclear and what he teaches you is never on the test. He does not provide any help for the tests and grades the homework he gives you very harshly. I got 2 points out of 10 taken off because my computer turned my homework submission 90 degrees. You have to teach yourself the material from the internet or straight from the book.
Great guy, but overall horrible course. Homework almost everyday and very unclear with what material to study for exams. Takes forever to grade assignments and very behind in coursework. Would not recommend this class with a full course load because it's very unorganized
IF YOU VALUE YOUR EDUCATION DROP THIS CLASS. This professor is a sorry excuse for a teacher, and has made me strongly consider transferring. The average on tests is 50% and you will not get an A on anything. 0/0 WOULD RECOMMEND THIS PROF. If I could rate him lower than an E I would. DO NOT DO THIS TO YOURSELF.
Horrible teacher 0/10 no need to rate again. Will always be horrible.
He is really generous professor. Always helpful and ready to answer questions.
During discussions he will have us copy and paste a table mostly for pre and post lab boards. My tables "do not look as he wishes" because they are outlined with dots and "Hard to read" compared to others who's tables are solid lines. He consistently marks me down for this. It is unfair because my computer won't allow it to look different. NOT rec.
Do not take a class with this professor. Dr. Vites is a kind, caring, mellow person but cannot teach nor engage his students for the life of him. You won't do well on his exams because he doesn't prepare you for them. Homework and extra credit can boost your grade but he doesn't record them until the end of the semester.
He changed the grading standard w/o tell students because we were doing too well in his class. I had taken class before (credits didn't transfer) so it should have been easy and it was at first, but I began finishing labs early so he added questions at the end if we finished early, but when I asked to leave he didn't inform me. Lost half of points.
The final is due tomorrow and half of the assignments still haven't been graded. How am I supposed to study properly without knowing what I have done wrong and right throughout the semester?
I am currently taking CHEM 116. Our class has one other professor. We had our first exam today and the other professor showed up but Dr. Vites did not. He later emailed us telling us he had other educational obligations and said we would do his part the next class. If you want a professor that teaches don't take him.
Slideshows are picture based so it is difficult to use them for studying. Study Guide was not an accurate representation of what was on the test. Write down what he says to take good notes which is difficult because of his accent (understandably uncontrollable). He forgot to come to class on a test day. Good guy, but his teaching could use work.
Dr. Vites is not a bad guy. But he does not care much about his class. We had an exam the other day to which he did not even show up. None of my homework from the first month of class is graded, including the exam. In his labs, he will have you do things which he does not teach us and you have to have to wait for him to do the work for you.
Terrible teacher in his class now, just terrible at his teaching methods. Sometimes hard to understand because of his accent. Sometimes seems to be unsure of what he is saying or teaching. Terrible Terrible, this class is weird as well, talk about the universe then next day talking about the brain. This class disgusts me!
I had Vites for my lab (CHEM 116) and for my lecture (CHEM 111). Having him as a professor was incredibly frustrating. He was late to class on exam day 4 different times. In class his lectures rarely related to what was covered on the exam and he would give very poor and vague instructions for assignments. Nice enough guy, but I wouldn't recommend.
Dr. Vites is a very kind man. I really enjoyed him as a person. However, he is remarkably boring to listen to. His tests often focus on information that isn't included in his lectures and are buried deep in the notes of the power point. He makes alright study guides, but all to often key information is skimped or left out.
Terrible. Absolutely terrible. Doesn't know what he is talking about. I found the textbook where he plagiarized the slides that he reads off verbatim. Doesn't grade anything ever (despite numerous promises to do so). Doesn't open exams on time or has them set to the wrong year so you can't take them. Often has wrong answers marked right online.
Hes always late to class and he never discusses what he wants done and whats due and he assigns homework and forgets that he assigned it. And when you dont do it he gives you a day to make it all up and if you dont your grade drops down to an F
His class isn't completely hard but it is difficult. After about two weeks into the class I wanted to change my major from chemistry to biology. He didn't start actually teaching the material until the last half of the year. I wouldn't recommend him to my enemy. He started using ALEKS and it don't even go with the lectures. Just don't do it.
Instructor doesn't answer students questions. Many students would ask questions but he would avoid the question. He focuses on studying topics that are not on the tests and focuses on group work that has no effect on the topics learned in the course. Be prepared to teach yourself.
Instructor doesnt lecture or teach class. Homework does not apply to problems presented in class and material on tests is pulled out of thin air. A nice guy but truly should not be teaching chemistry.
Worst chemistry lab professor I have ever had. Isnt helpful at all. I was very respectful to him, but he was very rude to me in return. He says one thing in class, but then changes it later. I dont recommend his lab at all, unless you want to be threatened by zeros for a grade.
This man is a great chemist, but not professor. He is very strict, unorganized and would not hesitate to give you a 0 or work alone if your 5 minutes late. He also very rude.
you Must complete the prelab and get ALL answers correct or you will not be allowed to participate in the actual lab resulting in a zero. Hes a scientist not a professor.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS MAN! I had him for chem lab and I regret it. The TA's were amazing and thankfully they were the ones who graded the labs and helped us throughout the lab. But Dr. Vites' 1 hour lecture before every single lab at 8am was unnecessary and because of that I took the hit and skipped the last 3 labs. The class itself is easy
Good lord this is the worst professor I've ever had. It's like he doesn't care about his job at all. The man legit stands in front of the class and mumbles for an hour and 15 mins reading verbatim from the slides. His homework is god awful from a book that has nothing to do with the lectures. No clue how Eastern allows him to collect a paycheck
CSIE isn't a particularly difficult class but if you don't do the reading/show up to class you will fail. Vites clearly has a passion for the content but he lacks teaching ability. There are pop quizzes every class (although they aren't very surprising at this point). The TA is great and does the grading. I, however, would never recommend the class
Vites is not the best lecturer. But if you ask for help, he will accommodate. It takes effort outside of class to make up for the fact that the lectures arent helpful. However, attending class is necessary to know what he expects. reading the book and watching videos online are the only things working even if basic concepts of chemistry are easy.
If you dont read the book, youll be super confused because his lectures are bad. He goes fast and not in depth to really explain. You also have to buy Aleks. Its a homework program, I think, that he assigns.
We never knew what was going on in class. The class was about being organized but he was not. ):
He is kind and understanding.
Get ready to teach yourself. Dont get me wrong, vites is super nice, but he cannot teach! This class was very unorganized and I feel like we did not learn anything at all after each class. First hour was spent doing worksheets in groups and vites didnt show up until after that. SI was basically in charge of everything.
Dr. Vites seems very kind and is always willing to answer questions. However, he is just not a good lecturer. His lectures are not clear and do not go into the level of detail required for the exams. I've actually considered skipping class and reading the book instead because I find the book much clearer and more helpful.
Dr. Vites was not a good professor at all, but he was definitely understanding and helped me to pass this class. He lectures but nobody understands what he is saying. HW is very hard!! Make sure to do good on the ALEX hw/pie chart. That devastates your grade if you dont get 100s on each hw. He is also terrible at responding to emails. Good luck
One of the worst professors Ive had. Lectures as if hes talking to himself and is not very clear. #struggling
I took the Chem118 lab during COVID-19 The TAs were helpful. Him, not so much. Also, we were simply going through the motions of the lab rather than learning anything from it.
If I had to pick two words to describe this professor they'd be lazy and useless. Lazy because all he does is give online work that he doesn't have to grade. If he has to go out of his way for you in any way, he won't. Useless because his lectures don't help and they're normally covering stuff from previous homework. You'll google everything.
Do not take his class! I would go into class understanding something and leave confused. Dr. Vites goes on and on about things that don't apply to our lab, and we would always be stressed about finishing the lab in time. Seems like a nice guy, but wow he is a terrible teacher--he just makes things way more difficult than they need to be.
In this class , labs are to be turned in when class ends (ex-3:50) I turned in a lab at 3:53 and received no credit and when I didnt answer 2 questions on another lab instead of getting some points i also received no credit. He isnt exactly the type to want to help you to succeed.
Dr. Vites cares very little about his students. Especially as halfway through the semester, he stopped accepting late work. You had to turn it in by the end of the lab or receive a zero. The grading was done by the GA, and they were very kind. It's tough with a teacher like this, but with COVID-19 and him not caring, SUPER BAD.
he's pretty nice, but can't function w/ online classes (zooms). only gives to end of class to submit work, even if the lab ran long. wouldn't recommend, but not awful, i guess. one of the GA's was more of a teacher and understanding than he was. i suggest making friends in the class, they help a lot!
ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. Would not retake any classes with this professor if my life depended on it. lectures were very scattered and did not know what he was doing. We did online classes due to the pandemic and he was not cooperative with students. The only reason I did well in this class was because I taught it to myself. Tests also every other week!
Professor vites is quite literally the worst professor at EMU. I took him for Chem 118 lab and he is very inconsiderate, doesnt care about his students, and takes TWO SECONDS TO EXPLAIN the lab before leaving you on your own having to turn in the lab at the end of class. He made me HATE a subject I thought I loved. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!
the worst teacher Ive ever had. Unclear, unfair, has no idea what is going on yet expects you to know. Made me hate chemistry.
I was planning on doing environment chemistry until this class. I would have had to take him two more times after this class and that's a big NOPE! He is easily the worst professor I have ever had. He is extremely unorganized and honestly very rude to his students. You will have to teach yourself and you will be consumed by tests and homework.
Professor Vites is caring, sure, and he's a good person, sure. But he is NOT a good professor. Doesn't put in grades until the last week.
Made the lab procedures work during the pandemic and I had fun in the lab. It was just the grading of lab reports, the TA's were looking for 100% right and some minor mistakes made my grade go down.
Very inconsiderate. I learned more from the TAs than the professor. Must show up to class, does not give extensions for labs even if they are a minute late. Is almost impossible to reach out to him, takes about 1 business week to respond to an email. Show up to lab and know the material PRIOR to doing the excitement and youll be in good shape.
Vites seems like a very nice guy, but be prepared to do hours and hours of homework (due every Wednesday AND Sunday) and if thats not enough, he holds exams every other week on SATURDAYS which have content different from the homework, lectures, and textbook. Hes bad at communicating and you will have to teach yourself everything.
