smart guy but hard to listen to in a lecture, he makes you think and looks for answers from the class and requires class discussions when writing papers and as someone who isn't the best writer I feel uncomfortable, he gives good feedback if you ask for it but I hate even asking cause im uncomfortable in my writing and he isn't super approachable
I think he is very helpful when it comes to getting feedback on your essays. If you ask him a question, he is very hands on and will always help you on whatever you need help with. He is very easy to talk to. He wants people to engage with the lecture and class discussions. Essays are reasonably graded as well.
One of the most approachable professors you'll ever have. He encourages being engaged in class as well as participation. He is really hands on and very helpful for tasks like essays and other papers. Would highly recommend!
Joseph Altnether is very difficult. He will never give you a straight yes or no answer. He will most definitely make you work for it. Altnether is a bit condescending at times, has favorites, and lecture heavy. Don't take him if English is not your strong suit.
His class is kind of boring. However, he makes his criteria very clear. He provides many resources for the few essays we write. I highly recommend him if you want a chill English class
Professor Altnether is such a great professor! Although his class is not the most interesting, He engages well with the students and does a lot of group discussions. He is very helpful when you go to his office hours and very understanding when it comes to your essays when you seek help!
I really enjoyed this class. He was very engaged in his class and is very helpful in giving feedback and asking questions. He really wants his students to succeed. He's also very caring and helps students any way he can.
I loved having Professor Altnether for my first semester of college. If you send him your rough drafts he's always happy to give helpful comments that basically guarantee you a good grade for final drafts! Although he posts the powerpoint online he does take in class participation. Honestly it's an easy A, take him :)
Mr. Altnether is very understanding of his students expesually when it comes to this that you cannot control. If you do not understand something he takes the time to explain it to you, he is very caring about your grade but make sure to put forth the effort that you want to be received back. Ask questions in his class because it will help clarify!
Altnether is a great professor. He really cares about his students and tries his best to make sure they are successful in his class. His grading criteria is very clear, there is no confusion as to what he is looking for in the essays. He is very involved with each students writing process. It is super easy to pass this class!
Professor Altogether is the best professor I had a GCU. He genuinely cares about his students and is EXTREMELY helpful! I would say definitely attend his class or you will miss important information, I went to every lecture and enjoyed all of it. He makes sure everyone understands the essays and will check in w/every students paper. TAKE HIS CLASS!
TAKE HIM FOR ENGLISH 106!! at first, he might look intimidating but he isn't! he is very caring and will help you to get an A, he knows what he wants in an essay and will tell you what you need to fix clearly. I loved this class and he was very nice!
Professor Altnether was definitely not my favorite professor. Very lecture heavy and pretty boring class. Can be a little confusing on grading. Also told me I could not do a certain topic but let other students do the topic I asked to do. He can also be condescending and is not approachable. Would recommend a different professor for ENG106
I really liked this professor. He understood mental health concerns and provided me an extension when I really needed one. He was very professional about teaching, clearly loves his work. I enjoyed his class, as well as the essay topics. If you have social anxiety, may not be the best class as he does make you speak up a lot, but otherwise, A+ :)
Hands down the best English teacher I've ever had. He cares a lot for his students and he takes the time to go through and help us all out. If you fail/failed his class it's because of you. He does a lot to help us pass, you just have to show up and do your work. He also almost always gives us time to do our work before class ends.
Professor Altnether is a very good teacher. He is quite funny and easy to listen to. Classes are very laid back and he is not at all strict about technology use. Class usually involves lecture slides and group discussion but I never found it too boring. He always gives you feedback on your papers before you submit your final draft.
Professor Altnether is an okay professor. He has very lecture heavy classes, and he teaches things very different than other English teachers I have had. I felt very stressed in this class because the work wasn't very clear. Although attendance isn't mandatory, he teaches things different in person than what the online curriculum says.
easy class, went probably a total of 5 times all semester and passed with an a. as long as you do the discussion questions, and briefly go over his lecture slides youre golden. a majority of the classes that i missed was due to family/mental health issues. he was very understanding and emphatic and gave me the chance to makeup work. recommended.
Professor Altnether is very knowledgable and and cares about his students. I highly recommend taking him for English.
I barely went to class due to mental health and still ended up passing this class with a higher grade then expected. Everything we do in class is fairly easy and honestly fun. He is super helpful as long as you make the efforts to ask for help. Great professor for this class.
honestly nothing you get in this class is going to perfect, he always has something to make a comment on. wasn't that hard of a class, just do the DQ and look through the lecture slides.
Although his class is very lecture heavy, I enjoyed his class and his teaching style. He is very approachable and you can tell he truly wants his students to succeed. Develop a good relationship with him and he will do anything he can to get you the grade you want. I really recommend taking his class!!
Altnether is a great teacher all around. He encourages independent thinking in the classroom and challenges individuals to come up with the best ideas possible without being belittling or condescending. Overall, I really appreciated the time I spent in Altnethers class, he was a great conversationalist and is an absolutely brilliant individual.
Altheneter's class is easy but he really makes you think. He helped me become a better writer as he gave great feedback. When I wrote an essay about Hawaii and explained how it's correctly spelled as Hawai'i, he automatically changed how he spelled it. That meant a lot to me as it shows how much he cares about his students' culture
Such a great professor. Super easy and nice. Able to work with you, just talk to him.
Professor Altnether makes English as engaging as one could. He is super caring and nice, but he will call you out in class to answer questions but you can answer with a group usually. I kind of hated that but it did keep me engaged and he also explained everything really well. Class usually last an hour and 20-30 minutes.
Professor Altnether is a great teacher. He comes into class always ready and happy to talk with the students. During lectures, there were group discussions to help students engage and work through the content. He gives great feedback and time for students to ask questions during and after the lectures. I would highly recommend his class.
I had Professor Altnether as my English 106 Professor freshman year. Amazing Professor, very caring and understanding. Always gave good feedback as well as provided clear grading criteria. I learned a lot in his class. I highly recommend taking his classes!
Professor Altnether is honestly one of the best professors Ive ever had. He made the grading criteria so incredibly clear and made sure you had all necessary tools and information for an A+ paper. The class is based off of 3 main essays and he spend a lot of time helping you prep for these essays. Honestly 10/10 professor he is so amazing.
He reads through lecture slides very fast and skips over important stuff. Three big essays in total and they will make or break your grade. Almost no assignments so do well on the ones you have. Do the homework he assigns in the announcements because it will be participation for the next class.
Professor Altnether is funny but also serious. You do three total essays that make up the bulk of your grade, but he explains them well. Participation matters very much and he makes you wait until the end of class to find out. Overall the class was easy and he was pretty good.
3 main essays he covers, talks super fast sometimes clarifies instructions , participation matters
Joseph Altnether is a great teacher, he cares about all of his students and gives great feedback. He may come off as rude but he truly cares about learning the materiel. He is an easy grader and a very understanding professor if you reach out to him.
Cool guy!
He just doesn't really know how to teach. He expects us to understand what he wants without explaining it which leads to a lot of gray area on essays and assignments. He's also a really tough grader so you end up getting marked down on things that he never explained. I would pick a different professor if you have the choice.
He clearly has vast expertise in his field, but his very serious tone and content-heavy teaching style might be a bit startling for new students. It works for some, it didn't quite for me. Nevertheless, he isn't a bad instructor. He simply expects strict adherence to potentially unclear or unecessarily complicated guidelines.
I haven't seen anyone else mention this yet, but here are two things you HAVE to know about this man. First, he has a really dry sense of humor. As someone who shares that, I found him really fun to banter with in the front row after finishing a classmate discussion earlier. But if you don't understand dry humor, you will probably think he's rude.
he likes to argue a lot. You could be right, wrong, it does not matter. He will argue with you no matter what.
A good teacher individually, he offers good feedback and will help you when you are struggling. For the class as a whole, he spends half your time lecturing on unnecessary information, argues, and disagrees with any student feedback or opinions, and has extremely high expectations for an incoming freshman class. I would not take again.
Lowkey a fun teacher. It is interesting to see how good he knows about english and his knowledge of college writing. Always gives useful feedback and eventhough he is a tough grader, he always gives you a rational explanation and is open to help you improve.
Eng 106 is much more difficult than Eng 105, but as long as you go to class, refer to the slides when writing papers, and just give effort in general, you should be fine. He talks kinda fast in his lectures, but if you approach him 1 on 1, he'll give you great feedback and explanations on what's going on
Great professor overall will take his class again any day.
W mans very funny easy class. put me on alot of music. If your complaining get better at english smh.
Professor Altnether wants you to succeed if he sees that you are giving your all. Work with him during office hours and meet his expectations and he will respect you. He is difficult to hear so make sure you sit in the front of the class, plus he grades attendance at the end of class and has everyone line up to write their name on a piece of paper.
Great professor! He has a fun sense of humor and is very engaging with the class. He gives great feedback on essays and is always super helpful and open in discussions. It's pretty lecture heavy but the notes are never bad and gives ton of in class work time on essays.
Graded on old outdated APA guidelines, lectures weren't clear, and he didn't provide good outlines for papers.
The only assignments in this class revolved around the 3 main essays, the instructions are clear enough. The classes however are really boring and hard not to skip.
He gave a clear criteria of what he wants in your papers. There were 3 total so make sure you do well on them. Be so familiar with APA format and make sure to show up to class! Overall, great professor and very knowledgable. If you do what he asks you will succeed.
The class was easy but for some reason, he liked to take off points on assignments that were based on completion. Spoke very softly in a loud classroom. Some funny jokes but mostly sarcastic. Easy class but he was definitely not a light grader.
He is very funny and will make relationships with his students if you go to his office hours and participate in class. His grading criteria are very clear so you always know exactly what to expect. He gives amazing feedback on the rough draft so you can do your best when you submit the final draft.
Prof. Altnether is one the best professors I have had at GCU. He may be a little intimidating at first but once you get to know him he is very kind. If you talk to him he will be very helpful and he is also very funny. Very lecture heavy but the lectures are very important to pay attention to for essays. Would take him again!
Altnether overall was a pretty good professor. I personally never understood anything he would give advice about because I am a more hands on and visual learner but he gives good advice on how to do your essay and what should be changed. The AI's graded harder than him in my opinion.
I love Altnether, he grades ok and it can be hard to approach him at first but for me, my laptop broke about halfway through the semester and when i talked to him he gave me an extension until i got a replacement.
He is very particular with his grading and the format of papers but other than that he was fine. He sometimes docks points on assignments that were supposed to just be for completion. He's lenient on due dates if you message him. I barely went to class and still got a B+. Make at least one friend in the class for peer reviews.
He was a bit intimidating at first but once you meet with him 1 on 1 he will give you clear instructions on what he wants to see on your papers. Did not like him much but I did learn a lot on how to format my papers and how to write good essays especially as I started out as a new freshman.
Lectures a lot and takes time doing unnecessary tasks. For essays he has a lot of expectations which seem unreasonable.
Will work with you and help in any way he can. Won't just give you credit but will go out of his way to give you the tools you need. Set me up for success in future courses.
Joe is very funny but some students read that as being rude and disrespectful to the students, but most of the time it was all in good fun. The IA he used was truly awful but I dont think thats his fault. His grading is interesting and pretty serious but it was fine. I would take his course again
He purposely tries to trick students with assignments by putting the wrong due dates in halo to see if you were listening or present in class, and I think this reflects his whole teaching style. He is strict, short, and has a weird humor that is usually offensive . He seems "out to get" his students and overall just isn't a supportive professor.
Best teacher Ive had! He is kind and understanding if you need help with something or may miss a class due to certain occasions. I would 100% recommend everyone to take him!
He was useless. He never helped with any essays, he always expected you to know and come up with everything on your own. He also yaps about how much participation is important, so if you take him, you literally have to be in class every single lecture. He's disrespectful and thinks he's funny.
The best teacher you will ever have if you pay attention in class
One of the worst professors I have had so far. I took English I with a different teacher, and it was way easier than this. He seems to hate his job and gets annoyed very easily by the students. This class is pretty easy, but he makes it way harder than it needs to be. Do not take his class.
This teacher is unprofessional and includes his opinion against your topics, so there is a bias in his responses. He is not kind or respectful to his students. He asks opinion-based questions and then provides a negative response in conjunction with whatever opinion the student provides in front of the class. Complains about participation.
This professor only seems to care about participation and gets upset with students easily. Feedback on papers is not clear and grades mostly on opinion. I have not learned anything while being in class, and most lectures are based on why participation is important, but does not clearly explain what is actually important for assignments.
His course is quite easy, but he is insufferable. He will find every way to bring you down and use his opinions in every situation. He will ask you a question to make fun of how you answered. His ego is actually insane.
This professor is so rude and cold toward his students. He gets mad when no one raises hands to participate, and then when you do, he makes fun of your opinion and shuts you down in every possible way. This man only thinks his opinion is right. There were times where his "lecturing" was simply just him yelling at the students. Would not reccommend.
He's an interesting professor. His humor is okay and I didn't really mind it. It was hard to tell whether or not he was going to like your work or not because it seemed somewhat based off his opinion and I really don't think I learned too much. He can be understanding though when you have good reason. Overall, the class was alright.
Altnether was an amazing professor. However, do be expected to participate in class. His teaching style is heavily reliant on the questions you have to help you succeed. If you do participate the class is incredibly easy. Definitely my favorite professor from GCU I've had so far.
This is my first review and honestly I would never take this class again. He is disrespectful and does get mad when no one wants to participate. He made us do a pop quiz because we did not participate and got mad when we were packing to leave even though he was done with his lecture.
He has been an amazing professor! I wish I had him my first semester. He grades fairly, helps throughout and on every little detail of your essays, asks questions and always is wanting to improve. He cares about his students very much (told me to go sleep instead of being at his class because I was working so long). Highly recommend!
He is an amazing professor, I am someone who doesn't like to participate but after taking his class I felt more comfortable, he doesn't judge what you have to say. He respectfully shares his opinions and is open to hear other peoples point of view. He cares about his students and wants to them to do good in his class. I would take his class again.
He is honestly great!! I go to office hours for extra help and he is so helpful. He is intentional about developing relationships with students who care, and is willing to invest and go the extra mile. He is also funny if you listen cloesly. As long as you put a little effort in you will do exceptionally
Lots of needless busy work, extremely blunt or rude, disappointed if we couldn't answer a question, disappointed if we asked a question, redundant lectures that should not have taken up the entire class every single time, and useless information. Also, group punishment. One person talks, the entire class is blamed for no reason.
I think that he is a great teacher if you actually put effort in if you don't he could care less but all you gotta do is give effort and he will help you through it wouldn't have made it through this class if it wasn't for him being my teacher.
He does not like to see his students fail. Amazing professor.
Explains everything well.
Was very helpful and wants to see students succeed. I forgot to turn in my paper and I emailed asking if I could submit it late and he was gracious enough to let me turn it in. I also really liked the IAs in his class as well
Great teacher and really funny! He's clear, direct, and purposeful in what he teaches. Make sure to attend lectures because only during class will he explain how to complete the essays and homework (barely assigns any), and it's the only way to earn participation points. Pay attention, and whatever you do, don't use AI :)
Attendance matters, go to office hours for help on essays and this will help you get a better grade. Ask any questions you think of! He is super easy and this class was worth it.
Sarcastic and fun classes. Gives DQ's for most paragraphs for every essay to make sure you are on track and know what to fix. Quick lectures and slides with clear information. Only missed 2 classes because it was engaging and fun to go to.
Graders were hard with grading and he talked a lot but good teacher
I actually took both of my English classes with Altnether two semesters in a row. I would recommend him to anyone. It is hard to understand and acclimate compared to high school English, but once you understand and FOLLOW THE OUTLINE you will succeed. He and his graders provide clear feedback as well.
Simply put, this man is the goat. If you show up to class and participate I think it is impossible to not enjoy the class. He has a very dry sense of humor, but once you realize he is joking, he will crack you up. Overall best ENG teacher.
Very social helps student learn through group work
He doesn't just read from a powerpoint or textbook, funny, sarcastic, offers good feedback. I wouldn't say that attendance is mandatory, but it's super helpful. I recommend him over any other English profs. He is a bit of a tough grader, but with his feedback it tends to balance out because he tells you exactly what you need and it's easy to fix.
He's a pretty good instructor he just extends the class longer than it really should be. His directions for the essays are pretty clear, but once a handful of people don't follow them he lectures the entire class about it. What he plans for the day/week is changed constantly so that's why showing up is so helpful because you'll be pretty lost.
bad at giving feeback and will personally attack you
if you liked him you probably got on his good side which is not many people. grades harsh but gives you no reason as to why. always changes what the assignment criteria is supposed to be turned in, like it may say "final draft due" but then you go to class and he says just submit a paragraph so you would stress about getting it done.
Not a big fan of the structure of class, but Professor Altnether was good. Provides good feedback and is helpful when one-on-one with students. Tends to speed run the lectures and gets annoyed with no participation/questions. Likes to have workshop days where if you leave early, the whole class will lose participation points.
The teacher is caring, funny, and approachable. He provides models to guide your essay writing, which makes the class feel manageable. Even though attendance isn't mandatory, it's better to show up so you can get accurate instructions, since the online ones are often inaccurate. If you have him, KEEP or TAKE him.
Professor Altnether is great. He makes writing enjoyable, encourages participation, and grades super clearly. Sitting up front helped me engage, and if you get to know his humor, he'll make you laugh every class. Show up to class to get the actual instruction because it's usually different online. Essay models and outlines are helpful 👍
I recommend Professor Altnether to anyone! In each essay, he was very clear about his grading criteria! He made his classroom environment very fun, always starting class with an icebreaker question and making a joke or two. He was very approachable and always wanted to help students improve on their essays.
