Good teacher! class is a little scary at first and seems hard, but gets easier over the semester. Tests are easy, paper is very hard but overall a pretty good class!
Very unorganized. Extremely confusing about what he wants. Smart man I'll give him that, but wow very unclear. I would not take him again if I where paid. Not a professor I recommend.
So did NOT like this class! I thought it was going to be fun and interesting but it was boring and he is very unorganized. There is no textbook which is nice but everything is on eReserves so when he changes the reading schedule, it can get pretty confusing. He grades somewhat easy on tests and papers but the final paper is 15 pages long! ugggh
No textbook, that's a plus. Attendance is MANDATORY. He is smart and funny I will say that. You have a Midterm and Final, 2 Small Papers, 1 group project and 1 BIG paper. Material is dull and the final paper is 15 pages and he grades really tough on it. Very unclear on due dates as well as everything else he expects.
Nice guy but not a good teacher. This class is supposed to be interesting and fun but he doesn't know how to make it that way.He is very unclear and wordy in his lectures, and there is an enormous amount of readings, this class is not a core comm class but it sure feels that way with the work load. I would not take this professor again for any class
Really passionate about what he teaches. He can be wordy at times but he is always willing to talk and asks for your opinion often. Work is reasonable, students are just lazier than ever now. I would recommend him for any Comm class you want to learn somethhing
Lots of work for little points, which will make students work harder. Professor is smart and nice and gives out test questions before the actual exam so students can prep.
Prof. Anderson is an amazing teacher I cannot understand why people would say such bad things about him. He is always wiling to discuss concepts you do not understand and pushes you to be a better Comm major. You will learn and appreciate about rhetorical crit and gender theory is you take his class. Wonderful person.
Prof Anderson is an incredibly insightful person. I had him for both Comm 439 (got an A) and Comm 301 (Looking like a B). He is a little on the difficult side but if you are a comm major he really pushes you to THINK! He has ways of making you think outside of the box...I like that. His personality is hilarious!
He took over from Katie Gibson mid way through the semester in a large lecture class. His powerpoints/lectures are very boring but he is not the horrible Prof many have described him to be. He is very helpful, knowledgeable, makes you think, posted a good study guide for the final and is generally just a nice guy.
TOOK OVER FOR GIBSON, AND WANTED US TO DISECT HIS STYLE OF TEACHING RIGHT AWAY AFTER WE WERE USED TO GIBSONS STYLE.NOT VERY CLEAR, MORE OF A PHILOSPHER THAN A COMMUNICATIONS TEACHERS. WANTS YOU TO CONCEPTUALIZE UNCLEAR IDEAS. NICE GUY
I had Pro. Anderson after he took over Pro. Gibson's class. At first I did not like him but in the end he didn't seem too bad. His lectures were somewhat boring and the final was really hard but he added a huge curve to the final which helped a lot of us out.
This guy is not a good professor. He plays favorites which is probably why a select few like him. There have been several complaints about him to the department. Its only a matter of time until he figures out a more efficient way of teaching or he'll get relieved from teaching here. Good luck to him and his new baby
Oh man this guy knows this material! He gave me tips on how to write the hard CRITICISM paper! Overall the class was difficult but fun at the same time. I would have him again for Comm 301, but I'm graduating by then end of the Fall 2010. Take him for Comm 301 while you can!
Intelligent, friendly and always willing to help. His expectations are clear and he will prepare you to become a rhetorical critic. Teaches you how to think in critical critically and examine the world with a new terministic screen. Would take him again for another class. One of the best professors CSULB has to offer.
no comment.
Good Professor. Very clear. go to class and do your speeches, study a little for finals. Easy A or B
One of the most intelligent and insightful teachers at csulb. Not the easiest class but he is willing to help you every step of the way.Go to class and participate and you will get a good grade.
Absolutely loved taking Anderson's class. My eyes are open to a million new things I learned in his Gender Comm class. I am taking another class with him next semester also. Very insightful on Gender, willing to help with anything.
He was awesome. He is extremely helpful. You have to work for your grade, he has a quiz pretty often but as long as you pay attention in class and do the readings you you will get an A. Don't slack off on the paper and do as many revisions as you can!
This teacher was indeed helpful, however, if you are looking for a class on public speaking, look elsewhere. He seemed to mix philosophy along with socio-economics. While I did work hard and got a decent grade, I wish he would have focused more on teaching how to look like you are giving a good speech, and less on economic analysis.
If you like organized, straightforward classes and want to know exactly what is expected of you, look elsewhere. Extremely disorganized, always missing class, low point total which makes getting an A virtually impossible. Grades harshly on papers. An A student most of the time and will be scraping by with a low C
Nice guy. Horrible professor! Do not take class with him! Im a fairly good student w/a 3.8GPA & but looks like I'll end up w/a D in class. He gave us an essay one week before finals to be due on final day. He is always canceling class & that's great, but not when he doesn't go over missed material & average class score on every exam is approx 60%
Professor Anderson was awesome! Allows two absences, except on speech days. Textbook is not really used in class, but is needed to study for quizzes and tests. 3 exams, few quizzes, 5 speeches, and he gives extra credit!!! Is always there to help so it is up to you whether or not you take advantage of it. Great class!
Anderson is a good person, but a terrible professor. He canceled class at least 3 or more times per month and rarely lectured on course material but still expected you to know things for the test. On multiple occasions I would have an appointment for his office hours and he would cancel. I would not take his class again.
I really loved Joe. He is so nice and intelligent! He genuinely cares about what the students take away from his class and the material was interesting. Has a few writing assignments that you need to attend class for but they're pretty easy. Tests are HARD! Read read read! Get a communal study guide going and you should be fine. Go to lecture.
Professor Anderson will make you work for your grade. He truly cares about the students. He is very passionate about what he teaches. There are four test that are the biggest factor in your grade. If you have any questions he will answer them. Hes a fair grade. I would recommend taking Comm 300 with Anderson.
One of my harder classes. He gives quizzes almost every week so make sure you study. The rhetoric paper is probably the hardest part. He also cancels class a lot, but I personally didn't mind (8 a.m. class)... He is definitely helpful when you talk to him
I dont why people give Professor Anderson bad ratings. Anderson is a good professor. You do have to put in the work to get a good grade in his class. Anderson cares about his students. In Comm 301 he gives you the whole semester to work on your paper. Anderson is very passionate about what he teaches.
Professor Anderson helped me really understand the study of rhetoric. You will have to work for your grade in this class. Anderson post power points notes online which is very helpful. In comm 301 the tricky part of the class is the 10-15 page paper. Anderson gave me really good feedback on my paper. I earned a B in the class.
Good professor! Really makes you feel comfortable to speak, even if you do poorly. Grades tough on speeches but exams are ridiculously easy. Textbook use only for exams. Canceled classes often. Funny guy & passionate about public speaking. I hate public speaking but I did really well thanks to the comfy atmosphere of the class.
Do the work, and follow his instructions (for the speeches, create your personal outline from his). You will receive your A. He is all about structure.
Dr. Anderson is the best professor for Comm 301. Make sure you stay on top of your 10-15 page paper that is due during finals week. Their is a a final and mid term, paper proposal, Paper presentation, reading quizzes for both group presentations and the class readings. The workload is reasonable. Also cares about his students success.
Professor Anderson was one of those instructors that didn't have respect for his students. Much of the time if you questioned him on anything he will respond back with a childish attitude. His exams are easy if you study for them. His prompts for the speeches are nice, fun,and can be sometimes interesting. Overall, if you handle sass you'll survive
Professor Anderson is one of the best professor I have had at CSULB. This man really helped me understand rhetoric theory. Dr. Anderson knows his stuff. You will have to a paper for his class which is due at the end of the semester. Anderson wants you to pass. Make sure you get feedback from him on your paper.
I don't know why he has bad reviews. He is amazing. 4 speech (easy if you make an outline), 3 exams (common sense), and group presentation and final. Reasonable with his workload. I WAS SCARED of public speaking but i slowly got over it taking this class. It helped me grow. Honestly, take this class. He's very nice and helps you if you need it.
Pretty straightforward class. 3 individual speeches, and 1 group presentation. Follow the sample outlines he posts and you'll do just fine. Attendance is required every speech day, even if you are not speaking. The exams are not that difficult, a lot of the information is covered through lectures so the textbook isn't really needed. Good luck!
Four major speeches, but one is a group project. Three exams, you will pass as long as you study the textbook and the lecture notes, which he posts online. He lectures well and is pretty friendly. He's a great choice.
Prof Anderson is great. 4 major speeches, 1 group project, and 3 exams. If you want to get an A, go to his office hours to practice your speech. He gives you great feedback on what you need to do before you present in class. His exams aren't difficult if you read the textbook and the powerpoints he posted on BeachBoard. Great choice to have.
Class is canceled a lot, take that how you want it. Textbook he assigns can be found as a pdf online. There is a lot of work, but that is expected for any 301 class, it's not just him loading you with course work. Group project. He is very smart, and if you have the chance for some convo with him, you'll see that.
Read all presentation papers he posts to bb, he will quiz each one for 5 points, even the group you're in. 13-15 pg. Research artifact critique due at end.
Professor Anderson, is a horrible choice. He is nice but grading is unclear. He always made an excuse to cancel class when there was no speeches yet expected you to know everything without teaching it. Take someone else for this class he is a very hard grader on speeches. Very hard to find him for office hours.
He's a very nice guy however, I had to teach myself everything. We haven't had a single lecture since the 2nd week of the semester. He posts on bb last minute. He acts like he taught you what you need to know but in reality you teach yourself from is (very few) ppts and from the book. Doesnt always post necessary stuff on BB.
Anderson is a great professor and COMM 130 itself is a pretty easy class. You have three exams and 5 major speeches but he gives you plenty of time to prepare for them. The way his class is structured is great, you will never be in his class for more than 45 minutes (unless its an exam day) and he is accessible outside of class too.
I had a love-hate relationship with Prof. Anderson... as other have mentioned hes not horrible but hes not very good either. The class consisted of 5 major speeches, 2 exams that were easy if you studied and a final group presentation. Honestly if you follow the STRUCTURE, of the outline that he provides youll be fine. Also madtory attendence!!
Professor Anderson is an okay professor. Not hard, not easy. Grading was out of attendance, 2 debates, 3 tests, a paper, and 2 minor assignments. Class was also just okay, not boring, but not interesting either. His syllabus needs some real organization help.
He is a nice person but he isnt really clear when it comes to test because you will never really have a actual lecture in this class. Since being in this class I've had two lectures since the first day of school all we have been doing were speeches. He doesnt teach you how to do speeches you just do them. If your great at BS take this course.
He is a cool person, but we could have had more fun with this class. He makes us do tests on concepts we barely discussed in class. He doesn't rlly teach students on how to do their speeches and instead he just puts up rubrics and example speeches on beach board. My friends had a different comm prof and theyre not even having a final, BUT WE DO. :(
Joe was an okay professor for comm 130. Not hard but not easy either. The class consists of 5 speeches(the last one is a little difficult but manageable), and a final group presentation. Only 2 exams which are online and open notes. He doesn't really lecture that much and you really don't need the book. Really nice dude and gives feedback and help.
I was wary taking this class with a teacher who wasn't an "easy A" because of my fear of public speaking.. But Anderson is the most understanding professor I've had thus far. I didn't have a close student-teacher relationship with him, nor does he probably know my name but he will still be one of my favorite professors.
Good Prof
Can honestly say Professor Anderson was a good choice for COMM130. Gave clear directions and good feed back on speeches. Technically not an easy A, but if you put in the effort youll get it. Would recommend
Professor Anderson was such a great Professor, you actually learn in his class he is always willing you help you with your speeches. His office hours are so helpful, and he is always willing you you give you feedback. If you have trouble with anything he is great at explaining what he wants for his assignments. Attendance is important for speeches.
Anderson is by far my favorite professor this semester. He is so clear on what he wants on assignments and is more than willing to help you if you need it! He genuinely cares about his students and it is very evident. I always feel bad when people don't show their camera in his class (zoom) because you can tell he really wants to talk to us :)
The class consisted of 5 speeches and 12 quizzes. Some speeches were harder than others, but overall, this class will be fairly easy if you manage your time well. If you need help, the prof. will definitely help you during office hours.
He is one of the best professors I've taken so far in terms of email responsiveness, clarity in direction and grading, conciseness, kindness, and teaching. This will be the easiest 3 units of your life if you just do the work as instructed. He is very straightforward and wants you to do well. I cannot comprehend how anyone else rated him below a 5.
Mostly graded on 4 speeches and several quizzes. Only a few classes were mandatory to attend and he was very flexible and helpful throughout the process of making the speeches. The last two make up about half of the grade though, so it's pretty stressful, but expected in a com class ig. Super sweet prof, I'd definitely take him again!
Awesome!! Not a hard grader and understands online is scary for public speaking. Reach out and go to office hours for help. Attendance is only required for half-semester, then it's scheduled by groups. I and my sister took him and liked him. He has quizzes that are 5 pts. each but not hard. Mid and final are open notes. Would definitely take him ag
love love love. Took prof Anderson as a freshman and he was one of my favorites so far. He was so understanding that people are shy. It was online so he didn't expect us to memorize the speeches but it was overall such an amazing class. The speeches were so easy. The easiest class I've had. If you take this class, TAKE HIM!!!!
If you do the speeches and quizzes the class is pretty easy and self-explanatory.
All the previous reviews that gave him a 4 or 5 is definitely lying to you. Professor Anderson was an alright teacher, if this class is offered in person don't take it. He is a hard grader and even though he may seem nice, he judges every single movement you do when you present and never reminds anyone about the quizzes or homework. Save yourself.
Prof. Anderson is nice and shares great information and shares different perspectives to a topic you share. He didn't share lots of written feedback and he understands that people range with public speaking. No need to memorize the speech cause he lets you read off your script. If there was a textbook, never used it so no need for it in my opinion
His class is very easy if you do good on your speeches, and even then his grading is in a way so you can still lose some points and do good as he has very very easy quizzes and speech analysis which are online that allow you to make up the missing points. He is very engaging and gives helpful feedback and what needs work and what went well.
This class was alright, his grading was kinda tough but he's very nice and understanding. In others classes I've heard you have to memorize ur whole speech but in this class you can read off your notes. You don't have to attend every class just when you present and another day for peer reviews.
super tough grader for public speaking
Tough grader honestly but class is not difficult. He is clear and straightforward.
His class consists of speeches, quizzes, and analysis essays. The speeches are very time-consuming and take a lot of effort to write and prepare for. He is a harsh grader for the speeches, and his feedback forms are illegible. He never once gave a lecture or taught us how to give speeches. You won't learn anything from this class.
If you're a good writer, then you will be fine in this class even if you're not the best speaker. His quiz and exam questions are confusing at times, and he is not an easy grader. Still, though, as long as you actually try in your speeches, you will find yourself improving over time.
This class was somewhat easy. I will say, be prepared to research and speak in front of your classmates almost every week. Try not to procrastinate on making the speech or the speech analysis (esp this) his quizzes are not very clear at all which was frustrating near the end of the year. I thought he was decently nice and a pretty fair grader imo.
He doesn't do any lectures. You get assigned a day to speak and a day to peer review and only have to come those days (ex. for a Mon/Wed class you only have to come every Monday). He grades speeches harder than expected and quizzes are based on online notes (that he doesn't go over).
he was way too harsh of a grader, like this is a speaking class not a writing class. he was too opinionated on speeches, graded off of his thoughts not on the rubric and how well we followed it. never recommend this teacher. communications is supposed to be easy, but i found this class harder and more time consuming than my math and science classes
He is a tough grader, and grades on opinion and content of speeches rather than delivery of speeches. Doesn't really care about how you give your speech, but he will nit pick the facts you include and make harsh comments towards your topics. No rounding grades and not very clear with how he wants the speeches done
He's a great professor. As long as he sees you're trying, he'll be willing to compromise. He is a tough grader if I'm being honest, as he will mark points off your presentation if you turn the page on your notebook and it's too loud, but take that tip as a grain of salt. He is an awesome professor and as long as you try your best, you'll do well.
GRADES ON OPINION NOT OFF OF RUBRIC
He is very chill about grading. He goes more based on effort rather than expecting you to have great public speaking skills. It's 4 groups and attendance is based on which group you are in. It was surprisingly not a bad class, and as someone with social anxiety, I would take it again.
Professor Anderson was overall a nice guy and his class was not super hard. His class consists of quizzes, 4 major speeches, and an online final exam. DO NOT FORGET TO DO THE QUIZZES. He is a pretty tough grader on the speeches and does not really grade you on your delivery for public speaking more on the content of your speech.
nice guy but a REALLY tough grader. doesn't lecture at all which is so odd!!! expects you to already know how to be a good speaker and jumps right into presentations. makes you read off of slides on your own time and take quizzes on canvas. he gives makeup days & attendance is only mandatory when it is your assigned group's week for presentations.
Honestly he wasn't terrible but definitely did not learn anything. His feedback was nit as helpful as I would've liked it to be. Doesn't lecture after the first class and has very poor communication about when and how things should be done. Overall a whatever class and easy to get a good grade.
I enjoyed this class, but I think that for people who have no public speaking experience it is hard to succeed. His class relies on 6 speeches and students are just expected to improve naturally through his grading notes, he does not actually teach anything about public speaking or how to improve. He does provide many extra credit opportunities.
not a very hard class. after the first few weeks you only have to show up once a week. super understanding and well spoken, doesnt grade crazy hard and cares about current issues. super nice super cool teacher
Love this professor! He makes his expectations clear from the beginning, and after the first month, attendance isn't mandatory. There is one speech every couple of weeks (six in total!), one short open-note quiz every week, and some speech analyses sprinkled throughout (five total!). Although he is a tough grader, his feedback is very thorough.
Beginning of the semester is pretty light because the speech topics are based on your interests but end of semester he for some reason gets strict on grading. He also just expects you to know how to structure speeches and leaves the teaching to you, he does not go over any material in class. All of class is just presenting.
