very helpful no problems taking time out of his day to help me out in his office. Very impressed by his professionalism, and willingness to assist you in any problem.
Can I just say this is the hottest prof ryerson has!! Very knowledgable, helpful, professional!!! So passionate about geo!! :) If you can take him!! You'll learn a lot
Very good professor! Very helpful, very passionate about what he is teaching. Includes a lot of real life examples in class. Very good at teaching and keeping class involved, asks a lot of questions and moves around a lot. Very fair. Only thing I could complain about him is, that he is a Lazio fan :P Forza Roma....oh and Canadian Tire..LOL
This is my first ever rate my prof post: I took the time because this guy shows us students that we too can be in acedemia and we don't have to be 100 years old. This dude has charm, inteelegent and really shows passion in his work. Well planned out lessons and great discussions. Don't let his age and good looks fool you, he has a lot of knowledge.
Joe Aversa is a great prof. The best Ryerson has to offer. When lecturing, you can see his passion in geography. Class is never dull and a engaging class environment. Joe is very helpful and wants his students to succeed. Joe is very knowledgeable about the industry and tells great stories in class. Don't think twice about taking his class, ENROLL
he is one of the best profs ryerson has ! he is extremely helpful and if you have to get something clarified he is always there. the course is straight forward so it is easy to do well. would definitely take another one of his courses !
By far the best prof Ryerson has! Very cool guy and is very passionate about the course. He always keeps everyone interested and is a lot of fun for a prof. He is a fair marker as well.
Easy going, very helpful, he takes time to answer your questions. He makes the course interesting.
Marks fairly hard on the SA section of his tests. You can write a lot but if he does not see EXACTLY what he wants to see then you will get extremely low marks on the question. Okay lecturer but horrible tests.
Aversa would get impatient if asked to explain something in different way or multiple times. Almost all students got the same Q wrong, instead of reflecting on his teaching skills, he called us 'lazy', and asked 'why didn't you get something so simple?'. To him, being right was more important than being a good professor. Deeply regret taking it.
He's a good professor as far as teaching and lectures are concerned. But he and his TA's are EXTREMELY tough graders!! The TAs especially do sloppy marking and cut marks for things that are CLEARLY PRESENT in your assignment. Feedback is the worst, with blank comments! Tests are very long and tough! Prof. is unapproachable and very curt on emails.
Probably the best professor I have ever had. He clearly cares about his students. I highly suggest taking a course with him.
Joe is awesome. He might seem really intimidating the first time you meet him but he's so nice and super easy to talk to. He wants his students to understand the material and do well, and he makes himself available during office hours and over email for questions. The course material was boring but he's a good guy and more chill than you'd think
Joe will challenge you and force you to see your mistakes, but he is a fair marker and really cares about students. Easy A if you do the work, no exam
Easy going professor that you can see eye-to-eye with. Does a great job tying his work experience into the lecture even if it is tangent to the actual course material. This class has benefits to showing up, as there are some things in lecture slides that best have additional explanation. Textbook not required for workshops but definitely for exam.
Grading scheme made no sense. Seemed like his grading was heavily biased based on attendance. Wouldn't teach things on the exams, would often get sidetracked and would talk about current events for 1/3 of the class. Terribly prideful guy.
Best prof at Ryerson.
Joe is a great Geography prof, however, DO NOT show up late. He doesn't put up with tardiness or excuses. Assignments were more than fair and the term test wasn't too hard. Will go to the ends of the Earth to make sure you understand the material/workshops. Engaging and enthusiastic in lectures. Very professional in his field, would take again
Gets side tracked so easily during his lectures. Whatever he talks about in class will be on the test and the final is all written. Fair marker tho. Doesnt post anything online except for the slides. Not the worst prof, but avoid if you can and try to find a better prof.
I hate this prof. Try to avoid him. The midterm is 60 mc questions. He graded the written assignment harshly, and the final is difficult. the Final has a short answer, long answer, and longer essay questions. You have to give examples he mentioned in class to get the full mark. Barely learn anything from him.
This guy is amazing. Very caring and passionate about the topic area
Try to avoid him at all cost! He just talked about sports during class all the time. I barely learned stuff from him. Final is cumulative all written questions or long essay questions. If you can just try to find another prof but him.
Joe is very passionate about the course and he's a fair marker. His midterm and final exam were extremely straightforward. If you spend 2 hours studying the slides before the exam, you'll do fine. He tends to talk a lot about sports, life, etc., but the examples are usually related to the course content so that was not a problem for me.
Amazing! take this course
Joe is super down to earth and understanding, but wont just give you the answers. He really wants his students to learn and succeed and is approachable during and outside of class to work with you on the problems you face. Hes also extremely understanding, but only if youre a solid student. He doesnt mess around with those that dont show up.
Great prof. Very approachable if you need extra help or clarification of anything. His feedback is useful and he makes you want to attend his lectures. You can tell he's passionate about what he teaching. Definitely recommend.
Very cool prof. He's very passionate about the subject. Only bad thing I have to say about him is that you can't read any of his feedback because his writing is horrible, so Joe, please fix your writing.
Attending the lectures is important as most of what he says will be on the test and not on the PowerPoint. He is actually pretty cool and funny and I actually enjoyed most of his lectures. His marking, on the other hand, is pretty tough and makes you work for your grade.
Great professor, took GEO151 and GEO719 with Joe, A- both. Put in work and you will be rewarded. GEO151 might be more challenging for unprepared first years. Tests and paper are fair.
Great professor, took GEO151 and GEO719 with Joe, A- both. Put in work and you will be rewarded. GEO719 teaches ArcGIS through a guide. Must attend weekly workshops and be comfortable learning in a limited time-frame.
First Geo course I've taken at Rye and overall Professor Aversa made it very enjoyable. No textbook and you're graded on a midterm and final that are about 50 MC questions each, plus a written report. Overall not a stressful course that you can definitely get by on just the Powerpoint slides, but actually going to class is worth it if you want an A
Very passionate about geography and GIS, you can tell he loves the topic and knows what hes talking about. He makes the lectures interesting by engaging a lot but he does go off topic very easily, especially with sports. He always throws in a couple questions on the test about a random thing he said in class that doesnt seem important.
Although his tests were multiple choice they were still very difficult. A lot of the questions were based on the information he said in class so attendance is mandatory if you want to get a decent mark.
Joe is great! I learned so much from him. He is interesting and engaging during lectures. He is very passionate and knowledgeable on retail mgmt and can be funny. Weekly participation & workshops online which were a pain because you only had 12 hours to complete and took long. No final exam. If you put in the effort you will do well in this course
Great prof!
Joe is amazing. Very engaging lectures. Best professor I have had thus far.
Not a reliable person, unorganized.
Joe is the best. Really cares about his students. If you put the effort in you will get an A.
I really liked Joe as a Prof in general. He's a really funny and engaging person and there was never a dull class. Course work was fair. Attend the classes, do not skip out on a nice engaging prof out of all the other dull ones we have.
Tough Grader,
Joe is a phenomenal speaker and knows what he's teaching well. The only minor negative is that he can often go on tangents which are related to the course; however, most of the analogies will be sports-related, and if you're not a fan of sports, be ready to ask clarification questions. Oh, also the software for the ERP assignment was the worst.
Joe is the best. Always willing to help and made himself availble whenever I asked.
:( :( :( :( :( meanie
He's not nice
Professor Aversa is unprofessional, rude, and excessively focused on attendance. He regularly ridicules students in front of their peers to assert his power, creating a toxic atmosphere. Rather than fostering a supportive learning environment, he belittles students. I strongly recommend avoiding his class at all costs.
Joe cares about students. Classes are never dull.
Best course in the MBA program.
unnecessarily harsh and unfair at times. creates an uncomfortable environment.
Called out a student for being late. Commuters beware!
This professor is strict about punctuality. In university, students are paying for their education, so being late should be our responsibility, not something to be publicly called out for. It felt like high school micromanagement than a university class. Attendance should be more flexible especially since many students have jobs and long commutes.
participation matters beware commuters
he's boring
If you get the chance to take a class with Professor Aversa, do it! Definitely one of the best professors I've had!
I love this class.
Gives extensions without asking.
Joe is really funny. His lectures are very fun. The class has 2 tests and 2 assignments. Grading seems fair.
Best class!
Joe is great prof. Take his class if you can.
I don't understand why everyone has such harsh opinions on him, the difference between the negative reviews and the actual in-class experience is so different. Yes, participation matters, but Joe puts so much effort into his lectures and provides actual dialogue, he doesn't just read off the slides but actually makes it engaging and entertaining.
While he may try to make the lectures engaging, many students feel that the participation expectations are excessive and create unnecessary pressure. Just because a professor puts in effort doesn't mean the teaching approach works for everyone; learning preferences and classroom environments affect students differently.
hes the best shoutout joe
Joe is my favorite. The engagements are worth 10%, and you only have to show up to 10 classes to get perfect.
Prof Joes classes are the best.
Overall Joe is great. Lectures can drag on at times.
Joe makes the class entertaining. Great storyteller.
He's nice and passionate about teaching, but the TAs are harsh markers and the assignments which were supposed to be gpa saver turned into sth even harder than the midterm itself due to the criteria and grading ?!
Professor Joe was a great lecturer. Class was never boring.
the assignments which were supposed to be mark boosters were marked hard. also i dont like the fact that participation is a thing that this prof relys HEAVILY on. he also talks bad about students from previous years. he wont say names or anything, but he spends a majority of class time talking about sports or past experiences. like move on
This class was great. Joe teaches with passion. Best prof I have had.
Fantastic!!!
I really enjoyed Joe's class.
Lectures are never dull. Joe keeps the classroom fun and interactive.
Take this class if you can. Joe's lectures are so much fun.
My favorite class I took in the MBA program. Joe brought in a lot of industry people. Very valuable class.
Love him. Class was my favorite.
Joe is a cool guy. Great course!
Attendance matters but the classes were good.
the assignments were graded a little harshly but besides that the class was okay
The class was straightforward. A bit heavy on participation but nothing too crazy.
Very easy A.
His lectures are amazing. So entertaining.
His classes are so much fun. Really good lectures.
TMU needs more Professors like this.
The funniest Prof ever, I had him mandatory 3-6 pm, and I didn't even mind. Engage with him and you won't regret it
I wish I had more opportunities to have Joe as my professor, he is amazing. He made the 8am (8:30) classes bearable. His exams are extremely fair and he encourages you to study using the textbook provided. Would recommend getting the textbook, it makes the exams easy.
now the prof himself is great, but since it rlly doesnt matter what happens in lecture because the course is textbook heavy this review is on the textbook. The textbook is basically 104 dollars you paid to mansplain what I already knew when i was 10. i dont need a chapter to explain that customer returns means a customer returned a product.
Such a good prof. He makes class engaging and fun and even starts at 8:30 instead of 8. He suggests the textbook to do well but u can pass without it if u wanna save money
