My man here is the best. A little hard to understand with his accent, and he kind of skips around during lectures, but he is a great guy and will try to help you as best as he can.
Prof. Awino is knowledgeable and highly respected in class due to the way he responds to each student needs. He accompanies every concept he explains by a sample exercise problem and then involves the class by inviting one of us willing to come forward to lead the rest in finding a solution. Active participation in class is something he values.
He doesn't care if you're learning or not all that matters to him is getting through all of the subject material. Get ready to teach yourself chemistry.
He's hard to understand, and rushes through the material to get it all done in time. Barely goes over examples in class. Lots of homework, quizzes and tests are hard. Basically you'll need to teach yourself chemistry, the lectures are pretty useless but they are mandatory. Switch professors if you get him. He is a good person and friendly though.
during pop quizzes, he walks around and helps with problem solving. Also encourages people to work in groups
Literally anytime someone asks him a question he makes someone else in the class answer it. Most of the time nobody knows, so lots of time is wasted. He doesn't think you can be successful unless you work in groups, even if you prefer to work alone. If you get a question wrong on tophat or dont understand a concept he tries to make you feel stupid.
He wants students to answer questions and problems which doesn't work well in a large lecture hall. I wish he would teach material in his lectures instead of expecting us to have read the chapter in the book before class. Overall, if you can teach yourself chemistry and do the end of chapter problems in the textbook, you can pass this class.
The course itself is tough and Prof. Awino makes it even harder by expecting us to read ahead of time and solve online homework assignments. However, the hint provided for every question is helpful. Its also easy to make up any lost points through extra credit which he provides almost on every weekly quiz.
As long as you do the work on your own and understand general chemistry you'll do well in his class. His accent is a little hard to understand most of the time, but you'll get used to it over the semester. Make sure you ask questions and do all the homework and TopHat questions!
Awino isn't the best at lecturing but he is very caring about his students and wants us all do well in the class. He is always willing to answer questions and he is willing to help us get an A in the class.
Does a good job of modifying class to fit student needs, not the best lecturer / explaining difficult topics.
You can tell Awino cares a lot about his students and he wants you all to succeed. Although his lecture aren't the best, if you go to class and answer the top hats he literally gives you the answer. We told him our recitation quizzes were too challenging so he made them easier (not to mention the quiz questions came right from the book).
Awino is nice, he has an accent but it's usually not hard to understand him. What he teaches is hard to understand sometimes because he doesn't thoroughly explain. Lectures are helpful and he takes attendance through TopHat. Overall, it was okay. Better than some of the other chemistry professors I've heard.
Dr. Awino is a very sweet and caring professor. He does have a heavy accent, which can make it hard to understand him sometimes, but you will adapt. Overall, the class can get hard and overwhelming, but if you look over the slides he posts online and form a study group, you will be fine. Don't fall behind!!
Awino is a very caring person but he is not the best lecturer. Personally chemistry is not my strong suit and I ended up dropping but this was not his fault. The assigned homework is a lot but it really helps to understand and practice the material. The recitation quizzes were difficult. Even from the front I could never read his handwriting.
Awino was a great professor. Tests were somewhat tough but if you study well enough you will do fine. Most exam questions come from tophat questions, recitation quizzes or in class examples. There is online homework assigned that isn't too difficult. Some exams were curved based on average scores. Exam's are 400 of the 600 points available in class
Dr. Awino was a great professor and made lecture enjoyable with his quirky sense of humor. His tests were not too difficult and I was able to get a good grade by attending class and some SI sessions. I would say he is a rather easy grader and would highly recommend him.
Dr. Awino did a great job teaching the material. The recitation quizzes were easy, and many exam questions are covered in class. He is also very friendly when grading them. Hand-writing is not an issue, and his accent is not thick, and it is easy to understand what he is saying.
Awino is a little hard to understand because of his accent. I did not feel like we covered important topics thoroughly in class. Online textbook isn't really needed, but does have good practice problems. Lots of quizzes for the course and you have the option to retake a test to get a better grade. Awino also curves certain tests.
Professor Awino is very helpful and accessible outside class hours. He took time to teach me chemistry. We met at least once every two weeks in his office where he taught me how to intepret and understand chemistry concepts. I am very proud that it paid off at the end of the semester.
He's a bit hard to understand in lectures, especially from the back, and goes a bit fast in lectures. However, he covers almost everything you need to know in them and lets you know what you need to memorize/practice. Had 5 total exams with one being optional. Exams were multiple choice heavy with some short answer.
The lecture for this class wasn't very helpful to me. A lot of the information covered in class was straight out of the book. The first test was stupid easy, the second was impossible, and the third was actually sensibly written. He gives the impression that he still has a lot to learn about teaching.
Dr. Awino is a kind and caring person. He tries to get everyone involved in the lectures (even though the class is the hardest thing ever) and is supportive and polite if (when) you get the answer wrong in class. He's super busy though, so if you need extra help get a tutor. Good professor, super hard class.
Awino is unqualified to teach Organic Chem 2. While I DID WELL in the class, he does not have the ability or knowledge to explain the concepts and proficiently teach this subject. You must show up to class for top hat, he does posts slides, but clicks through them with lacking explanations. Therefore use the book it is good, and teach yourself.
Chem is a difficult class, and Awino was difficult to understand, which led to increased difficulty in the class. I sometimes felt like Awino wasn't even sure what he was supposed to be teaching.
Prof. Awino provides well organized notes. He expects you to read them before coming to class. Overall a nice professor and made the course a lot easier than I thought before I started this class. Beware of pop quizzes that are directly from what is discussed in class.
Awino is such a nice guy and a good professor. Ochem 2 is definitely not easy, and he knew that. He did his best to make the class manageable, and you could tell that he genuinely cared about his students.
Dr. Awino is a good professor who expects a lot from his students. It definitely helps to read the book in my opinion, as his lectures are basically supplemental material from the book. He expects a lot from his students in class and expects you to remember your CHEM 331. His tests aren't ridiculously hard, the class just takes a lot of work.
Awino presents information he doesn't teach it. Be prepared to have to re-go through his slides and teach yourself. I would recommend reading the textbook and studying with others. He is very bad at explaining any questions you may have and is impossible to meet with outside of class.
Took this class in the summer and Prof. Awino did all his notes on the board (although he also posted a handout on Canvas after the chapter was completed). He explained the concepts really well. The course is hard with lots of material to cover. By attending Prof. Awinos lectures, I was able to understand the synthesis in a better way.
Dr. Awino is an awesome prof. This is my second time taking OChem, I got a C+ the first time and finished with a 98% with Awino. His test questions are straight out of lecture and from the chapter packets he posts online. If you review his chapter outlines and lecture material you're golden. He is very approachable and willing to help!
Very responsive to questions that you may have, always available for questions. Sometimes, he won't give you an answer to your question because he wants you to figure it out yourself. That can be frustrating. But would recommend for o chem.
Solves relevant problems during lectures, appreciates class participation by offering generous extra credit, and provides good notes that are easy to follow.
Never take Dr. Awino. Accent is very thick, understandable but handwriting is also difficult. Is very condescending & laughs at students when asking ?'s. Lectures are repetitive and whole chapter never covered. Doesn't allow makeup tests which other professor does -UNFAIR. Stupid hard recitation quizzes. Would NEVER recommend.
He curves the grades and means well for his students.
Poor teacher, hard to understand, doesnt have students best interest in mind, doesnt cover all needed material- switch your section while you can
Hard to understand, unclear grading scale and useless office hours. He claims he won't change your grade in the interest of "consistency" yet you can have the same answer as your neighbor and get 50% less credit. Do not go to his office hours he will try his hardest to belittle you for not having a Master's in Chemistry and perfect understanding.
I was really scared of organic chemistry before enrolling into this class. I however liked the way Professor Awino presented the material in class by solving problems on the board.
If you have little to no chemistry knowledge, this is not the teacher for you. There were many occasions where the information he provided was wrong, but corrected on the test. Very confusing. Did not learn anything useful.
Prof. Awino is the best teacher I have had for organic chemistry. He explains the concepts in a way that is easy to understand.
Gives good advise on how to study organic chemistry
Professor Awino is great. I'm currently taking chem 331 as a summer class and he genuinely cares about his students. He does confuse himself in class sometimes. He does have an accent, but it was still easy to understand and did not hinder my learning. He makes fair tests and grades super fast. Really nice guy, will always help if you ask.
Awino holds review sessions before the exam that are really, really helpful. He is a good teacher, but I also read the textbook and did a lot of practice problems.
Had him for CHEM 177 as well. Not very friendly in one-on-one conversations. Is not accommodating, so don't be sick on the day of a test.
Friendly, open minded, and easy to approach.
Lectures are easy to understand
Contracted the course for Honors. He is friendly and inspiring.
Good lecture notes, solves many problems in class.
Absolute comedian. Mad man. Cracks up at his own terrible dad jokes. Local legend. Truly deserving of the full 5 stars.
Great professor! thick accent, hard to understand at first but you'll adapt! uses McGraw Hill Connect for homework assignments, extra credit for answering questions in class, tophat for points. solves many problems in class, lectures are highly useful. night exams but he attends and sometimes helps answer questions! hard class, but he's very nice
He teaches you the basic things during lecture and then gives recitation quizzes that are a lot harder. Then on the tests there are questions that literally could be either one or its about something he skimmed over. Recommend going to SI sessions and getting a tutor. He likes to confuse you on tests so be prepared. Not a good experience for me.
Best professor Ive had for a science course, tests are fair and all multiple choice. Youre lucky if you get Awino instead of another Professor because it will make your life so much easier
Chemistry is just hard in general and it does not make it better when you cannot really understand your professor. He tries to make it understanding, but he flies through the slides like he is racing and many of us our lost on the last slide. Exams are pretty hard but SI sessions and practicing previous exams saved my butt. You have to work hard
The class overall was very simple, there wasn't much homework and all of the exams were multiple choice. However, Dr. Awino isn't a very great professor, he doesn't do a great job at explaining the complex topics in class. He will also skip over things which come back later to be very important.
Here's how to do well in Awino's chem332: Go to class mainly for tophat. Use the slides he uses and memorize them. That's it. Make flashcards of all the rxns on the slides and study study study. Don't trust notes taken in class because he messes up too much during class for them to be trusted. Trust the slides. They're just from the text anyways
Chemistry is traditionally a pretty difficult concept to grasp, especially if the last time you took a chemistry course was in high school. Awino is kinda difficult to understand, and he doesn't really explain difficult concepts well, so it is very easy to get lost. Tests weren't too hard if you go to the SI exam reviews but prepare to study.
Tests are all multiple choice with plenty of extra credit given throughout the semester. Awino has got some cringy chemist and dad jokes but makes the classes enjoyable. Randomly plays short videos before class like AFV, fail compilations, and Mickey Mouse clubhouse once! Class wasnt too difficult but requires effort. Not a lot of homework either.
If you are a student who struggles with Chemistry, this professor may not be for you. Awino is very knowledgeable about what he teaches, however he is not effective in teaching it to others. It has nothing to do with his accent, just his teaching style. Try to attend every lecture, in case he throws in a random online quiz. Do every assignment.
Thick accent but you will get used to it - he is very knowledgable and works out lots of practice problems in class. Gives extra credit for answering questions during class. Tophat is for accuracy!! tests are difficult but he works through examples in class, posts slides, and really wants you to succeed. hard class, won't lie about that!
I stopped listening to his lectures after the first two weeks. He makes mistakes on problems and I get confused - instead I watched YouTube chem videos (highly recommend). He is a kind and caring prof, but I didn't click with his teaching style. Always go to class, he sporadically does TopHat quizzes.
He is not very good at teaching. He often explains the easier concepts and speeds through the difficult ones. Sometimes it seemed like he didn't know what he was talking about. Lecture was only useful for tophat. SI and previous exams were the most useful for exams.
Awino is a really great guy, hes kind, but he just isnt a great teacher. He moves through lecture really slowly and it causes you to fall behind where you should be at. There were a couple weeks where the content of lab was ahead of what had been taught in lecture because he moves slow and messes up example problems in lecture
WHO IN THE WORLD HAS 60% OF AN OCHEM PAPER ON TOPHAT???? HIM.
His lecture notes are easy to follow.
Professor Awino made sure the course was clear and fully functioning when we switched from face-to-face to the online course delivery during COVID-19.
Tests are difficult but go of the mill for ochem. You could do much worse. With work doing well is possible.
Awino is a far better person than he is a teacher. It may just be due to a busy life, but 177 lectures seemed to be jumbled with incorrect answers and tended to be cut short by the class time. Don't switch out of his 177 if ya have him (he is very kind and will cut down tests on missed content) but do be wary that it may be more work on your end.
Dr. Awino is pretty hard to understand as it is, but online with his poor internet makes it basically impossible. He also does not directly answer questions, but he'll tell you where to look. If you don't find the answer after looking where he tells you I wouldn't be surprised. Thank God this class was open notes and open Google when I took it.
Chemistry is hard but Professor Awino is a genuinely nice person. His slides are well organized and easy to follow. Attending his virtual lecture sessions and reviewing his previous exams helped me do better.
After coming from chem 331 with Winter, Awino made 332 a walk in the park. The exams were all very straightforward. As long as you look at his lectures and review old exams you will end with an A. Each exam had extra credit on it, which made it easy to get a good grade in the class.
Chem 331 with Awino was one of the worst experiences I have had with college so far. He does seem like a kind person, but he is not a great teacher. He never seems to have a lesson plan and teaches the most simple and basic problems. Once you get to the tests you feel like something completely different. I wish I could write more. So frustrating!
I took 331 with Winter and HATED IT. Awino was much better at teaching. Make flashcards of the reagents from the slides and you'll be able to do 70% of the test easily. Sporadic tophat, exams are pretty straightforward for ochem 2. If you didn't do great in 331 don't worry you don't use any of that info and tests are less tricky. No adaptives!
Was not a good professor. Tests were very difficult and averages were below 50%. Lectures did not help and barely went off the PowerPoint. Exam reviews would go over one thing and the actual exam would be completely different.
Dr. Awino isn't a great lecturer and exams are very hard. Exam review sessions with the TA were usually more helpful. Homework could be excessively long toward the end of the semester. If you didn't take any sort of advanced chemistry classes in high school, good luck.
Awino is one of the worst professors I have ever had. My friend died and I wanted to go to her visitation which was at the same time as one of the exams. He told me that I should've notified him sooner.... sorry I couldn't plan when my friend died. He basically talked in circles at lecture; at 1/2 semester, I joined Winter's Canvas course.
Don't get me wrong he is a nice guy, but an awful teacher. People complain about not being able to understand him but if you focus you can make out what he is saying. However, he often doesn't explain what he is doing or doesn't explain things very well, so you are left confused. My TA helped tons so hope for a good TA and you should be fine.
Average to good professor. In 177 lectures aren't mandatory, but they're good to go to. The only lecture I had trouble with was one about sigma and pi bonds, usually he's good at walking through example problems and explaining concepts. It can be difficult to understand him at times though, his microphone setup often had problems. Not much homework
Dr. Awino stuggled to explain problems in a way the was easy to understand and if you aren't paying close attention during the lecture, it's easy to get lost, especially when he is working out problems. If you are someone who likes to write out all their notes, I would suggest writing the skeleton notes out before class.
He seems nice (ish), but he is genuinely terrible at teaching the material. He will not teach, he just reads the slides and circles a lot of things and then is shocked when everyone does terrible on exams. He is also incredibly hard to understand and lectures were ABSOLUTELY miserable. Save yourself a semester of pain and take a different prof.
Nice man, not so good prof. I recommend either having previous AP Chemistry experience or taking with another prof. He would circle things on his slideshows so much that not only could you not see what he was circling but, he also wouldn't explain the topics. Hopefully, your recitation TA is good at explaining the topics or you might struggle.
Dr. Awino may not be the best lecturer in the world, but he does want his students to succeed. The exams weren't very difficult as were very similar to the practice exams in canvas, which helped to know what material would be on exams. He offers extra credit, curves grades(an A was above 91% and an F was below 45%) and bumps grades up.
Chemistry is anything but easy here at Iowa State especially the ACS final that Dr. Awino gives at the end. His extra credit saved me and allowed me to end with a decent grade but this class definitely challenged me. Although Dr. Awino knows his stuff, his accent makes him hard to understand at times and his lectures were hard to follow.
I had to take multiple courses with Professor Awino and wished I had never had to take a class with him. His accent is very hard to understand, and I'm pretty sure he doesn't know what he is talking about half the time. When people asked questions, he would talk in circles and contradict himself, leaving everyone much more confused.
I had Dr. Awino previously for CHEM 177 and he was not my favorite, so I was unsure of how CHEM 331 would be with him. However, Awino is much more passionate about organic chemistry and it shows in his teaching. He has a thorough understanding of the material and wants to see his students succeed. Great professor for CHEM 331!
