pretty easy lecture classes

He does not like female students. He is not very supportive of female graduate students. I would not recommend him to anybody!
Pretty good class. Overall not too hard.
great Porfessor
easy to work with, very willing to work with students who need accomodations
Knows his stuff, but needs to lose the attitude. If he loosened up a bit it would make for a much more interesting class.
a tough teacher who is very helpful if you are someone who is willing to put in the work. I benefitted greatly from having taken his classes
He's a great professor who is very concerned about the performance of his students. Despite some opinions, he is not a difficult professor (his work on the other hand...). And as a female grad student, I have to say that he doesn't treat me any differently than he does male students.
takes a wonderful subject and ruins it but screwing you on the exams
He is an awful teacher who should be fired!!
Way too much reading. Tests are too detail oriented. Stressed out beyond belief right now studying for his stupid exam.
The class is really not that hard unless you're expecting a free ride, which is the impression I get from most people at VCU. He expects a lot and (gasp) has standards for the work of his students and I recommend him to anyone with any scholarly goals.
I took his Nazi Germany Film class 2 years ago and still consider him one of the best professors I've had- I learned quite a bit in his class, he was passionate about the subject and his cIass was well-organized and thorough. He has high standards and is a hard grader on exams. I agree with the female grad student that he is not gender biased.
Awful teacher! I can see that he might be good for upper level classes but for a 100 level class he was awful. He went on and on about the same thing and kept us over time. He gives Essay tests and no real grading scale for them. I ended up withdrawing from this class because I changed my major and did not need it and it would pull down my 3.5 gpa
took his Nazi film class--i was not looking forward to it much, but i ended up loving it. it is not an easy A but if you are there to watch the films and read the text, you'll do fine. he's a great guy and willing to answer questions. yes he is a little long-winded, but its because he really loves the subject matter. good class, great teacher.
Fantastic teacher. I enjoyed his class immensely, and he was very passionate about his subject. He made history very interesting. His grading is not easy and he had very high standards, but not impossible. I got an A in the class by studying his lecture notes really well. The textbook is only used for in class pop quizzes, not for tests.
Bendersky knows European history and philosophy like the back of his hand. Very smart guy, a bit difficult but in a challenging way. On the downside he is a bit stiff and has a serious phobia of technology. His handouts are typewritten(!) Don't expect to get any emails back form him, I doubt he even has a cell phone.
Has a really strange way of talking, almost as if he's running out of breath at the end of every sentence. Attendance is not mandatory, but he does pop quizzes every once in a while. He's not the easiest teacher in the world, but definitely easier than some of the others I've had in the past. Can be extremely boring. He writes the outline of th
His class is very very boring. I find myself daydreaming and writing down the time every minute crossing it off as each minute passes. He can be nice sometimes. His tests are not easy in the least bit probably because he is boring so i cant pay attention. i would not recommend him. im sorry.
Bendersky is a good guy and I like him, but his exams are killer and it is extremely vital to attend class everyday.
had him for graduate level classes; passionate about his subject, demanding, and at first a bit intimidating; However, I got more out of his Weimar Germany and WWII classes than any other classes
Bendersky was GREAT - very unusual b/c he teaches social movmements throughout history, but at the exam he gave me a C- whereas I'd previously had all A's and come to class every day so I ended up getting a C, even though I worked really hard ALL YEAR.
Had him for the Holocaust class. Half test is based on the book. Difficult tests, with many essays in a short amount of time. Big paper due at the end. Very fair grader. Knows his stuff and does an excellent job of putting all the pieces together. I have had him for 2 classes, and he is an very good teacher. Expect to work hard for your grade.
Great professor. I took Europe in Age of Total War...not a class I was looking forward to. He's extremely well versed in his subject and his sense of humor and willingness to converse with the class made it that much more interesting.
I absolutely loved his Total War class. It is vital to attend every class and take notes, but his lectures are methodical and very clear. Multiple essay tests, reading the books is a must, and the paper isn't too stressful. He's a great professor who knows what he is talking about very, very well. You have to WORK to get a good grade, but I loved i
His lectures make up the test, so you must be in class!! He is extremely helpful if yoiu attend his office hours. Make sure you read the book as well, because it will make it easier to follow his lectures. I ended up with a B in this class
One of the best professors I've ever had. Do not expect to get an easy A, but easy A's, after all, do not properly educate students. Attendance is a must, but lectures are great. Unless you are completely intellectually apathetic, you'll get a lot out of this class.
I have taken multiple classes with this professor and every time it has been a huge mistake. He doesn't take attendance, but his exam are based on his lectures. And good luck getting anything out of them because he is constantly changing his train of thought. And has no specific way of grading, its totally random. Horrible professor in general
This guy is a "classic" professor. Not the type I'm used to at VCU. I ove him for it. Very intellectual, very clear, and well spoken. And I've never had a lecture thats as easy to follow, and take concise informative notes on. The textbook is useful, but not necessary, and the novels he assigns are fantastic. Must be read. Not too hard overall.
I honestly do not understand how anyone can get an A in this class, im not a history major so for anyone who is not a history major, DONT EVER take this class. If you do not listen to his every word your going to get a D or F on the test.GOOD LUCK with this guy.
I took his Holocaust class. He's in my top three favorite professors and I am not a history major. As somebody else mentioned, the way he outlines his lectures is very helpful. If you have a lap-top, bring it.
Good teacher, he lectures quick and gets a little frustrated when you can't keep up. The tests are hard, and he grades things very strange, do the readings. pop quizzes will get you if you don't go to class. He seems really nice though, I would take another class with him, I would have just been more diligent with my readings
Ive had Bendersky for HIST 102, 331 & 332. For anyone that speaks ill of him, dont listen. They're probably the same people who dont do readings or attend class. You're in college, grow up! It's supposed to be hard and make you think. He gives outlines so you can follow lectures. Go to class and do readings. He's always willing to help. Take him!
He is the best source of German culture pre and post WWII that you can find. His teaching style forces you to think. When you are finished with the class you actually feel smarter. Take the class only if you like to challenge yourself. The class leaves you well prepared for grad school.
For those who want an easy A, he is not the teacher for you. For those who want to actually LEARN about WWII Europe or the Holocaust, take him! Yea his tests are difficult, but it's college, it's not all going to be easy. He is probably the most knowledgeable academic in his field. One of my favorite professors at VCU!
Extremely difficult, unfair, condescending, arrogant, disrespectful to students in answering questions. Very harsh grader on tests; I studied 8 and 1/2 hours for an exam and got a D-. If you don't complete an entire 16 pg. blue book, expect nothing above a D. He doesn't tell students what to study and expects them to memorize 300+ pages.
Bendersky is by far my favorite professor. He assigns quite a lot of reading and quite a lot of writing BUT THIS IS COLLEGE AND WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE DOING THOSE THINGS. Bendersky is passionate about what he teaches and his lectures are not just thorough but also incredibly interesting. Take him if you, too, are passionate about history!!!!
This class was tough! Although there is no 'real' attendance policy, you must attend class every time or you will miss a very important lecture. All exams are essay based on previous lectures. To do well on the exam you have to pretty much write down everything he says.
Dr. Bendersky is a genius. He's a lovable guy who makes every topic very interesting. He also happens to be one of the foremost scholars on German philosophy in the US. Yes, you have to do work, but what did you expect coming to college?! If you work hard and take good notes you will get an A like me. I seriously love this man!!! Great guy!!
Hardest class I've taken, but probably because it was a summer session, three hours/day for three weeks. Totally worth it. Bendersky is a fantastic man and a genius. His book is a great read on Nazi Germany and his lectures follow the reading from the night before. If you take this class, JUST READ. Don't put it off! All essay exams.
Prof Bendersky was fantastic! I will say this is the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. But this guy knows his German history. I feel like I learned a ton. READ READ READ. Keep up with it or it will pile up and be impossible. 75% of tests are essays on the major points of the reading. I worked my tail off and managed an A.
Dr. Bendersky is awesome. Amazing lecturer. His tests aren't hard if you go to class and at least skim the readings. He grades fairly and there is nothing tricky about his tests. 3 test class with no cumulative exam.
Dr. Bendersky is a genius and a great lecturer. All essay/short answer exams. He says they are based on lectures and not the textbook, which is only true to an extent. No cumulative exam. I read only so often, and only went to class half the time and got A's on the exams. Pre-write your essays - he gives you a study guide. I highly recommend him!
If you are at VCU, history major or not, take a class with this man! He is knowledgeable of his subject to a degree higher than many can achieve in a lifetime; a true scholar. You will have to work very hard and attend nearly every class but it is worth it. I learned many invaluable things, and he really expanded my critical thinking ability.
Professor Bendersky is a fantastic teacher, and definitely no-nonsense. The occasional dry joke here or there, but you're there to learn first and foremost, and you do learn! Tests are challenging but not impossible if you do the reading and pay attention. Mix of his lectures and the textbooks.
I loved this professor, but he expects a lot out of his students. Very difficult class, but very rewarding.
All tests are essay questions, he gives pop quizzes frequently on book readings. I personally thought he was rude and graded quite hard on the exams. He deff knows his stuff but he is not an easy professor, esp if you have no interest in the subject.
Bendersky can be tricky. Attendance not mandatory, but he does give pop quizzes so I was too afraid to miss. They are all multiple choice. The tests are based on the lecture material and are all essays. He graded them harder than expected. No homework assignments or extra credit. He definitely knows what he's talking about.
The only negative I found is that Dr. Bendersky teaches from a strongly atheist perspective, which I found to be a little bothersome. Like most kids my age, I don't know if I believe in God, but it's not something a professor should try to persuade one way or the other.
His class is very hard but very interesting. His tests are very hard because you have to connect the lecture material to each of the books you read which is sometimes difficult to do since they are not the best written books. However he is very helpful and understanding of a student's problems and will work with you as long as you show interest.
this guy is a nutjob, i listened to the first day of class and realized he was going to be "that guy" and dropped it. i strongly recommend you avoid him if you don't want to listen to pretentious crap.
Charismatic speaker; invites open discussion; certainly knows his stuff. What made me drop this class is that every word out of his mouth is: "religion is stupid. ppl who believe in it are stupid. let's all worship at the altar of science and reason!" This is a classroom, not a pulpit!!!
You HAVE TO COME TO CLASS. If you miss a class, you need to get the notes from someone else. Take very detailed notes. You'll use your textbook every night. He does give pop quizzes! His tests are in essay form and very straightforward and he gives you a list of potential questions. Very good professor.
Bendersky is 100% old-school. He's strict but his lectures are absolutely crystal clear and you leave class feeling you LEARNED something. Exams are all essay and as long as you attend every class, take notes, and do the (relatively little) reading you'll do well. His dry humor and anti-jokes are also rather endearing.
If you were thinking that this is a typical history class, it definitely isn't. Bendersky is more concerned with teaching you the perspective of the citizens of a particular time period. He is also very big into philosophy. It wasn't exactly my cup of tea, but I learned a lot. PARTICIPATE IN THE GROUP DISCUSSIONS! He might curve your grade!
Prof Bedersky have a dark sense of humor and he cracks me up all the time. Yes, he's an old fashioned prof, so expect lengthy lectures without much visual stimulation, but pay attention and you're going to learn a ton. Exams or quizzes aren't easy, but they're manageable, come on guys, you come to college to learn, so LEARN.
While Dr. Bendersky knows his stuff he is not for new students. His essay test, while passable, are given during class time and graded harshly for grammar too. Attendance checked with pop quizzes from readings that are hard to decipher from syllabus. Typical old history professor, who would rather be teaching his German studies classes.
Dr. Bendersky is an interesting character, but in a good way. Very quirky, but also hilarious. His lectures definitely get boring but basically everything for the essay tests come from them. Several quizzes based on reading. You definitely have to prepare and stay on top of it to do well, but he and his TA's will help anyone who asks.
I really do not recommend this class. Bendersky teaches it like its a philosophy class instead of a straightforward history class. It seems almost everyone in this class struggles. The quizzes he gives are very hard. I did the reading, took notes and studied for the quizzes and I still got poor grades. He is hard to understand and boring.
He is a really great professor that I want to take more classes with. He can be very funny if you interact with him before class.
Dr. Bendersky is an interesting person, but a tough professor. This intro course is definitely a "welcome to college" course that requires a lot of time and attention in order to do well in. Most people were fighting to get a B. Very subjective grading on exams which are all essays. Attendance is taken by random pop quizzes. Form a study group!!
I love this man! His tests are all essay questions which i loved because im not very good with multiple choice. He gives very helpful study guides. If you really go over the study guides before the test you will be fine! His lectures are interesting, but if you miss one make sure to get notes from someone! Not an easy A, but a great class.
Professor Bendersky is a great orator. His understanding of history goes beyond sequential dates Exams are essays, and quizzes are to make sure you've done your reading. He doesn't want you to memorize facts and names, he is more interested that u understand the era + its most important advances. Looks at history in a way none of my past profs has
I learned a lot in Mr. Bendersky's class. However, this class is pretty hard. He gives assigned readings and quizzes on them. The quizzes are really specific which makes them hard. His tests are based on his lectures so if you don't go to class then you won't pass. He is a great teacher, but his quizzes and test a rough. BUT he gives study guides!
Dr. Benderksy is a nice guy and means well... but his class is really difficult. You will use the Perry textbook but only for reading quizzes, given every 2-3 weeks. His tests consist of a few essay prompts which are 100% based on his lectures, which are long and continuous. I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone who dislikes lectures!
This professor is very hard!!!! I do not recommend this class to anyone. His grading is inconsistent, his quiz's are very tedious, and the readings take FOREVER. His grading makes no sense. All tests are essay based and they have to be very detailed and long to even try and get a C. Great guy, learned a lot but he is tough.
Professor Bendersky does not teach this class as a 100-level. I had taken all 300+ level classes this past semester, and yet he was my hardest class. The pop quizzes are very specific and his lecture material is unclear of what you need to understand about a topic. he does not give extra credit and he grades on a doctoral student level.
If you come to class and take college level notes this class is not difficult to do well in. The professor provides you with study guides before each test. If you use these and prepare for the essays ahead, you can absolutely get an A. He really knows his stuff! Not an easy class, but you will learn a ton!
He's nice enough but he's an incredibly hard grader. Getting a B on a test is hard enough, an A is nearly impossible. He talks way too fast in a dull tone that makes it difficult to even stay awake, let alone retain information. He's also impossible to contact for help.
This man is way too munch for 101 level. He is a tough grader, rude and prejudice. He really made me hate History. If you care about your GPA then stay away from.
It's obvious Dr. Bendersky knows the material, but his lectures made me dread going to class (although my interest in the world wars is minimal at best so that also played a part). His tests are ridiculously difficult--you MUST read the books and attend lectures to pass the class. If you don't do these, you will get a low grade.
Very monotonous and boring his lectures didn't have any visual component to them and it was just him speaking to the class the old-fashioned way which was not helpful at all. Chapter tests are multiple choice and you can easily do well on those if you read, but exams are all long open-ended questions that you have to handwrite. Avoid him if you can
He is painfully boring. It's clear he knows history, but he just does not try to engage you, and often expects the worst of the class as a whole/talks to the class like we're middle schoolers (perhaps warranted in some cases). Maybe his upper-levels are worthwhile, but in this class it seems only a small diligent few can stand to pay attention.
Dr. Bendersky is the best professor I have had of either of the universities which I have attended. I have taken 3 or 4 classes with him, both lecture style and seminar. He is extremely well informed, conducts regular research, writes excellent books on German history, and works as a publishing editor. I recommend him to all history students.
Bendersky can be a tough grader, he tends to mumble in class, and you'll need to read. But you can tell he really cares about the subjects he teaches on. Just pay attention to lecture outlines and do the reading and you'll be fine. If you are actually interested in learning and not just getting an easy A, I definitely recommend taking his class.
Class will be easy if you come and take detailed notes!! If you skip, then sorry pal you're over!!! Participation is important if you want extra credit points. Definitely a hard course for 101 level.
This class is HARD. He gives all of his lectures by just speaking, and he doesnt post anything on blackboard. In order to even pass, you MUST take excellent notes and have a clear understanding of everything he lectures on. However, Dr. Bendersky is extremely sweet and understanding and I did learn a lot from his class. He just makes you work!
Dr. Bendersky is a consummate professional in his field. However, he is an EXTREMELY tough grader and I fought to the death to muster a B. He does not believe in using the writing center for help refining your skills and will criticize you for doing so. He's very old school and will lecture for the entire class every day minus exam days.
Professor Bendersky is very passionate and knowledgeable about what he teaches. He's a fair grader and his class helped me improve my essay prep skills. As long as you stay on top of the readings and attend class, you should be able to do well. He's also a very genuine person and is willing to help you as long as you show the drive to work.
He is a hard professor for a 100 level class. He grades on 3 essay tests and 5+ reading quizzes. For reading quizzes, he assigns a 20+ page reading with 10 random specific questions, so they are hard to prepare for. For exams, he gives 13+ possible essay prompts and picks 3 that you have to write full page essays and define certain terms.
Bendersky is very passionate about what he teaches and it shows! Multiple reading quizzes and exams are based on his lecture so take good notes! He is quite funny and loves to hear what his students have to say. He is a German writer so his grading on exams is quite tough. Overall, he is an excellent professor he knows what he is talking about.
Professor Bendersky is a nice man with a clear knowledge of the subject the way he teaches an intro class is awful. Grade is based on quizzes and 3 tests. The tests are all essay based and you need to write word for word what he said during the lectures so notes are very important. You need to put in A LOT of effort to get a decent grade.
Definitely knows what he's talking about. Tough grader, pays very very close attention to detail and what you say in class. Grades are few - Perry quizzes are 10 questions each and that is the majority of the grade. So miss 1 - already at a 90%. Overall, learned A TON. Not an easy A though.
Dr. Bendersky is a great lecturer and super knowledgeable. He assigns great books and can answer most any question. He assigned 1 out of class paper, and had 3 in class exams. Each exam featured a Identification section that was narrow selection-wise, and one long essay on a theme in the book he assigned. You have to quote him and the book.
Does not post notes online. Worst TA ever. The test is written only and the study guide only gets you so far. No help or SI was given. He talks, and doesn't do powerpoints or writes notes.
Professor Bendersky is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he is teaching but I would never take him again. Your grade consists of only 3 tests and a 10-12 page paper and he does not give good feedback on his tests. Very hard. Take good detailed notes and hope for the best.
Really harsh grader and not helpful with feedback. You only get 4 assignments all semester and he doesn't do anything online. He just lectures the whole time, no powerpoint or anything. By far the hardest class I've ever taken. Seriously would not recommend.
I took Professor Bendersky's HIST 101 class. He is a knowledgeable professor and you can tell he enjoys teaching and wants his students to succeed. With that being said, however, this class was harder than my upper level classes. You must come to every class to take extensive, handwritten notes. He doesn't post lectures online and grades harshly.
Dr. Bendersky is really passionate about teaching, however its really hard to succeed in his class, he posts NOTHING online so if you miss a lecture, you miss the day completely. Youre basically graded on 3 essay based tests, which makes it hard to pass also because hes an author. He means well but the class is hard, and the material. Solid 5/10
I truly respect him as an instructor. Passionate & EXTREMELY knowledgeable. Had him for both a 100 & 300 class. I'm a history major so I enjoyed the depth of the course, but DON'T TAKE HIM IF YOU'RE NOT A HISTORY MAJOR. His class will take up WAY too much time, he is a really tough grader, & if you don't care about history it'll be an awful class.
Extremely tough grader. Did not provide good feedback on any assignments. Would frequently receive "??" or "expand" or "explore" on my exams. Refused to discuss the exams in the next class period or after the exam. He's a kind man in class, but cannot explain material at all.
a difficult professor, especially if you are not a history major. HOWEVER,it is one of the most rewarding classes. I have taken 4 just because I love him as a prof In his classes I learned more than I did in any other class and appreciate his love for learning.
I had missing information on an essay and the midterm exam from a class that I missed due to a concussion. I communicated my concussion to him with a doctor's note from VCU student health. At the time he seemed helpful but I later received a 0% on both assignments despite going to him for help, which forced me to withdraw after the midterm.
I had to withdraw from this class because his textbooks alone cost 160 DOLLARS to get. Because they're so outdated the bookstore didn't have them. He talks for about 3 hours every lecture and then expects you to take copious amounts of notes on a 3 hour long film. Not very understanding about missing class for legitimate reasons. DO NOT TAKE
Would not recommend this professor, if you miss anything in the lecture you are basically screwed as there's no way to get any notes besides a classmate. Tests are also difficult as if you miss a class, you have no way of getting the notes that may or may miss information that could be used on the tests. Do take this class with any other professor
This man does not teach, you enter class, sit down and he yaps for the full lecture. The only grades he inserts in canvas are tests and quizzes. If you like history and like learning on your own, you may appreciate this class. If you came to college to learn from your professor and not by yourself, DO NOT TAKE THIS MANS CLASSES.
He does not use Canvas for posting grades, announcements, syllabus or anything in that matter. His lectures consists of him speaking. There is no PowerPoint or module posted. His class requires a lot of reading and his exams are tough. It is basically just 10 essay questions on his lectures and the books that he asks you to read.
Dr. Bendersky's classes can be challenging to some, if they don't read the required readings and pay attention to his lectures. I am not the most passionate about school, but Dr. Bendersky was able to get me very interested about his course material. His class on the Holocaust was amazing, if you are a history major please take this class!
ima be as respectful as I can, but just don't take this professors class in any circumstance. He just talks with no powerpoint and the lecture outline just sitting on the projector in the background, thats it. He NEVER uses canvas, not even for grades (our only grades are 3 exams) so we just had to wait for midterms to see what we got. avoid pls.
He's traditional in the sense that lectures consist of him talking with no PowerPoint and you taking notes, and the only grades being physical exams and a submitted paper. HOWEVER, as a non-major taking this as an elective in my last semester simple because I am really interest in war history, I kinda really loved the class.
Don't just expect to float through the class. Speaking as someone who tries to weasel their way out of doing the readings, do not weasel your way out of the readings. His class on the Holocaust was the best class I have ever taken. Started with a D, started doing the readings and finished with a high B. You will learn a lot and feel rewarded!
He is a really quiet talker so it was hard to hear him even when I was sitting in the front and was also kind of a boring class. Attendance is mandatory but he has you check off and do Attendance yourself with a piece of paper that is passed around so you can just check off whatever class you miss.
