No homework or writing assignments except for the projects that you are working on. He challenges you to a certain point. Very good teacher!
Great teacher. 2d design is certainly not an easy "A" class but he makes worth taking. The entire grade is based on about 5 projects with a little attendence factored in. He walks around all period giving advice/chatting. Great guy.
he was very helpful. gives great advice. makes you challenge your mind a little but it's worth it. was an easy A for me.
fun class, great teacher!!!! very helpful and nice!!! have fun with this class!
Very laid back teacher, he walks around the class giving advice, talks to everybody and his grading is very fair. He makes the class interesting and pushes you to do the best possible.
i wasn't expecting to get an easy A in this class..cuz i got B on all four of my projects, but the last project made my grade one level up...it wasn't even a great project but thoughtful i guess...so as long as u have some construcitve ideas and you will get a fair grade...excellent teacher
i had a blast in this class. mr. biel pushes you to your limits and expands your mind. heres some pointers: neatness counts!, erase all smudge marks, use a ruler and tape for EVERYTHING! awesome teacher!!

Hands down the best Art teacher I've had.
he really helped me out he was a cool guy
Great teacher, great class. He was very helpful and encouraging, made you feel good about your work. I learned a lot in this class and was sad to leave. It's easy to get an A if you pay attention and put all you have into your projects. Highly recommended.
this guy is amazing.
joe is so much fun! i love him
Joe is an amazing art teacher and he does his best to help every single one of his students and pushes them to see what they are capable of.
I highly recommend him as a 2d teacher. you will learn a lot. He doesnt put you down and his critiques are very helpfull.
JB is ****ing tight, i love his class, design is awesome, i really really love it. I kind of want to become a teacher of it or something i think it would be incredible. Gah.
O RLY? he's "tight!"...but the class itself is boring.he makes you think but most of his demos are pointless. i think some students majoring in art shouldn't be required to take beginning drawing and painting, 2d and 3d design, those classes are a waste of money. fullerton just wants money and make students waste theit time.i have better hsti to do
I'm bummed I can't take Joe for another class! He's an amazing instructor (and great artist in his own right). Very open and expects you to drive yourself to do better, rather than pressure you to. Great criticism; very constructive and helpful, guiding and insightful. SO friendly! Hands down, absolutely recommended. I would vote 6 if I could.
Best Teacher I ever had in Art.
Very sexy and nice. Not too dificult but there for encouragement and inspiration. I loved him.
It's been two years since i've taken his class and i can still go to him for help with art. He's extremely critical when it comes to details but it's all part of how he pushes you to be better. I learned so much and will continue to use that knowledge throughout.
hottest man alive
Absolutely one of the best teachers ever. He is energetic, bright, and always bringing something new to the class. Easy going, but definately at the top of his game right now. Techniques and methods learned here are easily adapted to later art classes, making it worthwhile to get a great foundations course from someone like Joe.
Joe is a really nice guy. There are only a few projects, but he's not a very hard grader, so as long as you do the work, show up a couple times, and talk to him A LOT it's an easy A.
Joe's extremely passionate about art and it oozes through his teaching. He's always positive and always holding a cup of coffee to keep awake. LOL. When it comes down to it, he's honest and opinionated. Definately knows what he's talking about, because he's also successful in the art business.
He's a Great Guy. He's very friendly and approachable. If you just go to class as expected, he will often let you leave to work on projects elsewhere. Many of us stayed anyway because he had a very relaxed atmosphere and was always accessible. Once he knows you, running into him is just like seeing any of your other buddies on campus!
I love him..its the class i look forward to all week
The most enthusiastic professor I've ever had. By far, one of the most knowledgeable and effective teachers that I've had the pleasure to take. Well worth rearranging a schedule to be able to take him!
one of the best i've ever had. super knowledgeable
One of the best professors I have had. Very well educated, super clear assignments and extremely helpful... Even with other art expertise not related to his class. It was such a joy to have taken Art 103 with Joe. Very understanding and friendly.
Probably the best art teacher I've ever had in my life. He gives lots of feedback, lots of suggestions to help you improve not only your technique but also your design. I definitely recommend taking him. Biel is the best!
Joe is a fun and interesting professor! He gave a lot of feedback and was available for help on the art projects. He's really nice and understanding. I recommend him! Ask for a lot of feedback and you'll be fine.
He's fair, intelligent, helpful, knowlegable, friendly, professional, etc... He's the all-around BEST professor I've ever had the pleasure of encountering. If you don't take his class it's your loss. He's that good.
Nice guy, gives constructive feedbacks and shows you examples of good and bad projects.
Really great teacher by far my favorite this semester. Gives u use of creativity. he gives u feedback without telling u what to do. all around great teacher. HIGHLY reccomended :D
Awesome professor! His class is really cool and he's a great guy. There are 4 projects, all of which you can redo at any time for a whole new grade! You will be surprised with how good your work comes out. He's extremely approachable and by far the most helpful teacher I've ever had. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Great teacher!!!! its really easy to get an A , I just had a lot of personal problems. Hes an amazing guy and really helps you. Gives you plenty of time to do artwork and gives great advice! If you have the chance to take him do!! Hopefully I can work with him again!
Super laid-back and easy teacher. I was too advanced for the class, but I still enjoyed it.
Joe is the man. He makes students want to learn, and he is extremely passionate about his work. If you have the opportunity, take his critique class, it's fantastic.
First off he doesn't believe in books & grading. Doesn't take attendance, let you leave early sometimes. It's one-to-one critique. Therefore, it's up to YOU to do your best work, ask him questions & attend every class to participate his lectures. He's always there to help you!!
One of my first art teachers this year as a freshman and he's really great. Extremely helpful, outgoing - projects are really straightforward and practical and really help you improve your work. I highly HIGHLY recommend him.
He is extremely chill and helpful when needed. You can always redo to get a better grade. Straightforward. great teacher!
I'm not sure what the guy below me is talkin about. Yes, you can look at Biel's reviews and students DO respect him. Why else would he have such a good grade on here? He's helpful, chill, and let's you leave if you want. Awesome guy and teacher! If you want a chill professor who's leniant on attendance, this is it!
Took 2D design with Biel. Great class. Not strict on attendance AT ALL, which means how much effort you put into your projects is up to you. He is very helpful. All projects allow you to use your creatiity, he gives you guidelines to projects instead of rules. TAKE HIM.
Great instructor. Interesting assignments. Thoughtful & helpful critique. wish I had taking him instead of Forkan or Cho. He incouraged me with my painting techniques & concepts unlike the other two. He's a nice guy too
Biel was the most understanding professor I have ever had. Many times have I had to leave in the middle of class due to work or illness or a random emergency and he said it was all good and let me go. He is really easy to talk to and approach! I highly recommend him to anyone!
Very easy and interesting class. A lot of basic information, but displayed well through small lectures and demonstrations. Projects were fun and we were given plenty of in-class and homework time to do them. Pretty easy grader and very chill teacher to talk to. A lot of the time I went to class for about 30 minutes and then we could leave.
Incredible instructor. Class has low workload, but teaches a wealth of information that helps in other classes.
Joseph Biel is a great teacher. He gives a lot of advice and helpful feedback. The class is really laid back, he's not strict on attendance, and he always gives you extra time to do the projects. Joe was always very clear on instructions, and he never hesitated to repeat them again for you. I highly recommend him if you want an easy A!
Great teacher, nice guy, and really helpful. I highly recommend taking this class. Small workload and less pricey with materials (cheap brands work) compared to other art classes (you generally spend a lot [hundreds] on art supplies). He gives you plenty of time with due dates. You don't have to go to class on workshop days but I recommend you do.
On the weekends, I couldn't wait for Monday to arrive so that I could come to this class. That is all.
Tells you fastest techniques to finish projects. This is a "studio" class so it is all project based, classes consist of work time (and explanations/brief lecture at the beginning of projects). He will help if you're stuck and loves to answer your questions. Attendance required 1st few classes. The 2 paint projects are time consuming, expect that
No textbook needed. Joe is the best professor ever! He can tell if you're working hard or winging his class so just pay attention and work. He gives advice and gives suggestions for you to try when you work. If you're stuck, hes there for you. He's really understanding if you have a legitimate reason to be absent or need to leave early
My favorite instructor so far. No complaints. Helpful, funny, and professional. All his students love him and he will gladly help those in a jam with projects. With that being said, participation in his classes matter, and he will grade according to the effort you put in. Best believe you better not flake or slack off!
Joe is a fantastic teacher who is truly enthusiastic about what he does. He respects your artistic skill level yet pushes you to do better. Attendance isn't mandatory, but for the amount of work he gives in each project you might as well show up. If you finish early he doesn't mind if you leave/don't show, just tell him what's up.
My only regret this semester is that I didn't take 2d design with him. He's amazing. Please, take as many class as possible with him. Please!!!
AMAZING instructor. He understands that life happens but also pushes you to do your best&do things that you may not be comfortable doing as an artist. Gives feedback but isn't harshly critical which is AMAZING. Never makes you feel bad about what you're doing, is a genuinely sweet and funny guy, &gives you some good sized projects but enough time.
He's a great person in general and also takes time to talk with you if you need help. He won't remember your name, but will remember you, your projects, etc. He's also an art adviser which is great.
Joel is the man! Great professor who teaches you how to draw better and improve on your art. I took him for summer and was looking forward to coming class. Take him during the fall or spring so you can see your art work improve over time rather than 5 weeks. Overall recommend him :D
Definitely one of my favorite teachers this semester. He is always really engaged with students and seems genuinely interested in how everybody is doing both with art and in life. I also feel like I've learned a lot, though his explanations of the projects are a little lengthy. It is a little frustrating that you can't check your grades.
Hands down one of my favorite teachers! This class consists of a few big projects, but class time is devoted to working on these projects, and he gives excellent feedback. I loved this class as it pushed me as an artist, but allowed me to develop my creativity in my own individual way. He is truly an inspiring professor and just a pleasant person.
Amazing teacher. Provides helpful feedback. One of the nicest people ever. I was always excited to attend this class. He gives lots of time to work on projects in class, which really helped me. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!
Joe is one of the coolest professors I had this semester. The class consisted of three projects and a final. He gives you a BUNCH of time during class to work on it, so don't waste it. He always explains the projects and what he's looking for when grading. He also gives really good feedback. I absolutely loved his class.
Prof Biel is an amazing teacher. he understands that you have other classes and a life outside your education. His assignments are limited and easy to understand. If you are unhappy with your submissions, you can resubmit your work with corrections for a better grade. He gives great feedback and grades you on your progress. Would def. take again!
Saw good reviews about him and thought "they must be over exaggerating how great he is" but nope! He's super cool and super considerate towards his students' busy schedules which was probably the best thing about him. The projects can be a bit tedious but they're still fun and he gives you good feedback, and he allows you to redo it if necessary.
the nicest professor to date. no joke. My art is garbage yet this man thinks it's good (trying to make me feel better lul). He tries his best to give the best feedback for ur work. Would 100% take his class again.
Professor Biel is one of the professors I've had! He's very encouraging and gives great feedback on your artwork. I would definitely recommend him. He gives us a lot of time to do our sketches and projects in class and even extended the due dates because he saw us still struggling to finish in time. Thanks for the amazing semester!
Best Professor Ive ever had. 4 projects and 1 sketch book project. Fair grading. Very knowledgeable and very thoughtful. He understands that you have a life outside class just tell him whats going on if you cant make it to class. Im a Business major student but i never felt left out in his class. Absolutely enjoying. Would take again.
Joe is such a great professor! I really enjoyed his class. He gives really good feedback on your work. I loved how class time was used for working on the projects. If you have the chance to take Joe's class, do it!!!!
Joe is what every art professor should aspire to be. He makes sure to get involved with the whole class, catering to each student's individual needs. He is clear and straightforward with his instructions, honest, and kind all at the same time. He gives great feedback -- you can really see improvement in your work after taking a class with him.
Professor Biel is an amazing professor. He explains things in a clear manner and does lots of demonstrations to ensure we understand techniques. He engages a lot with the class and makes everyone feel included. He encourages us to be unique in our art work and to interact with each other for feedback. I would choose him again and 100% recommend!
This was his first semester for online class and it was very easy. For 2D Design we just made memes every week but you dont even turn them in, you only turn in redos. He just wants to help everyone improve and gives good feedback. If you dont wanna make memes, chose a different teacher, but it is pretty easy and there arent any restrictions.
Professor Biel is the most chill, understanding, and easygoing professor I've ever had. While the class was online, I think the same would still apply in an in person setting. He gives good feedback in a way that doesn't make you feel like crap about your work. Take him, you won't regret it if you're looking for an easy class and awesome professor.
Honestly the most down-to-earth professor. He really cares for students in his class even if they aren't art students he still gives good feedback. He shows much interest in students even if they don't his class anymore and offers help to confused students about anything. Would def recommend taking his class!
Joe's a really easy going professor. We had full freedom as to what we could submit for our assignments. Most of his classes are lab days, but I liked showing up to just sit there and draw. He gives helpful feedback and is fun to be around, but he doesn't really respond to his emails. There were a couple lectures, but I really enjoyed them.
He is very lenient when it comes to your work. He demands certain criteria while letting students experiment without limits. He gives out great critique that actually helps you improve your piece. There were a few lectures and they were really great and introduces students to new artists. He gives you a lot of time for each piece. Makes class fun!
Even though we only had a few lectures, they were really interesting and beneficial for us since they can be applicable to our practice. Has lab weeks to work on homework at home, so you do not have to be in class. Sometimes gives late notice if class will be online or in-person so may be tricky for commuters. Great feedback and a great teacher!
He is just amazing period. and sooo creative, cares and listens if you need help in art, life, etc. I hope he has the best life ever. made my stressful semester easier with his class. take him now
Great prof, long but simple lectures (which aren't mandatory), and approachable. Total of four assignments, including the final.
If you want an easy professor for the course, take him! He is a silly guy and he cares about your wellbeing. He only requires 3 assignments of artwork redos and 1 final zine. He extends his deadlines and lets you submit literally anything. Just be aware that you will not get traditional teachings and that he will overshare about his personal life.
I loved the material that he exposed us to, it was always interesting to look at different artists, and is pretty expertise at many different materials (you can probably ask for help on anything and he could absolutely teach you about it) 10/10 but I wish the class was more social with the professor cause we missed out on drawing a tattoo for him:(
Joe Biel is like if CSUF professors were good. He is so awesomeness and slayiful :D
He truly cares about art and helping students. Take him if you actually want to improve your skills and make interesting projects. Many students in my class skipped the entire semester, and didn't bother putting in much effort. Joe is worth your time! He'll typically dismiss early and have personal lab days anyways, please don't just skip.
TAKE THE CLASS! He truly cared for the students and the class was really fun and easy! I would strongly recommend taking this professor, attendance is not required as most of the class meetings were online.
Loved him! So down to earth and invested in everyone's art styles. Always willing to discuss and provide insight on our projects. Didn't take attendance and often on lab days we would all just work on our projects on our own time. I would recommend actually going in though because we did learn great information.
Super laid back teacher and supported any ideas that you could bring to the table. You're graded by three different projects throughout the semester and you get to experience different kinds of design elements through his lectures in between doing your projects. Attendance wasn't mandatory most of the time but I'd still recommend going! Take him!
Professor Biel is amazinggg!!!!
While Professor Biel is a caring professor, the amount of times he was late to class/or outright moved class to zoom sucked. He gives great feedback, wants to see his students succeed, but my time was wasted more often than not because of his lack of punctuality. 3 projects, Class NEVER goes the full time, so do not build your schedule around it
This course was so fun and a really great option if you need to fulfill an art credit. Professor Biel was awesome and a really great teacher for this class. Attendance isn't mandatory - while working on projects you can do it at home, no required materials for the course, and super fun/interesting project prompts. I would recommend this class!
Amazing professor. The type of art professor who cared and lifted you up rather than only tearing you down. Expressed creative expressions rather than focusing too much on technicalities. He definitely ignited my motivation to do art again.
This teacher is seriously amazing. The way he thinks about art is like so fascinating. He nice and kind and makes you feel welcome. He has three big projects and that's it. Class isn't mandatory after he explain the projects. He likes to give students time to work on the projects he assigns. He wants everyone to do their very best.
Definitely knows what he's talking about, but he has no respect for the class time or students time. He will show up 20 minutes late with no prior warning, constantly, changes in-person classes to zoom. He doesn't teach technical skills that the class description describes. Avoid if you are looking for strict curriculum and skill-building.
