Hard tests, hard lectures, hard teacher. If you can go to the SAC and get his old tests I would highly recommend it. They are practically the same with different numbers. GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL!
Hard professor. Hard homework. Hard exams. Bad TA - knew nothing. Unhelpful, almost to the point of being rude. Don't take his class!
The class is fine...the TA is probably the worst at the school. He is extremely helpful if you go to his office hours, and the class overall is clear, even if the homework and exams are difficult
BONIN IS AWFUL AND BORING
This man ruined my life!! I paid so much money for nothing! I got a horrible TA and a calc teacher with no personality. Mr. Bonin never helped me and was intimidating as all hell! Never take this class!
This guy sucks. He is extremely boring, so after countless days of falling asleep in class, I just quit going. He comes across as being very rude and uncaring about his students.
Bonin is very calculus-oriented and has no personality. He's very helpful with the homework (which is very hard) if you go to his office hours. TA sucked!!! You should do okay in this class if you've taken calculus before.
His final was extremely hard, I barely passed it although I remained an A- average until the final. TA ken helped me a lot.
What a terrible teacher! He doesn't speak clearly, mumbles, doesn't care whether we understand or not. TA was not helpful at all. Make friends in your class who will be able to help you too. I'm grateful I took calc before, if you haven't, you're dead
Terrible. Not allowed to use calculator. Not helpful. Assigns homework due on test days. Tests are painful. I'm a math whiz and i fail his tests.
CAPTAIN **** IS REAL HAAAARD, I CHEATED LIKE SIN AND STILL FAILED. KEN CHOTA THE TA IS A GANGSTA FO SHO, OG FO SHO, ALTHOUGH HE SMELLED REAL BAD. HE ALWAYS WORE A HIP STYLISH SHIRT WITH THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM ON IT, HE WAS THE BEST
Professor Bonin's lectures were EXTREMELY boring, painfully so actually. I came into the class with an interest in math and left with a very sour opinion on the subject. The homework was brutal and the tests fatal. HW due on exams.
Worst teacher ever. Don't ever take one of his classes, you'll regret it.
worst class and worst teacher ever, don't go into this class even if you like math. Find another teacher or you'll regret it. Not only is he a really hard grader but he is unclear as well as mean and patronizing to his students.
Bonin is as close to a heartless human being as I have ever encountered. He simply does not care about the success of his students; one exam went unscaled with a 55 average. The final is absurd. Freshmen: it is worth changing your whole schedule around to avoid this guy.
TERRIBLE teacher. Does not care about any students or their grades. is not clear. extremely hard exams. does not curve. has no personality. I took AP calc in highschool and got an A but still got a C in this class. DO NOT get stuck with this guy.
this guy ****ing sucks. hes horrible. DO NOT TAKE HIM
Do not ever take this class. I took AB Calculus in high school and had no problem getting an A. However, after working my nass off in his class I got a C. He sucks at life and will place no mercy on your soul. Work you schedule around him, for the love of God.
GO TO THE SA AND GET BONIN'S OLD TESTS. HE NEVER CHANGES THEM SO YOU WILL DO WELL IF YOU STUDY THE BASIC CONCEPTS ON HIS OLD EXAMS. go to his office hours to get help on the homework and he'll like you and eventually just give you the answers. he has no personality and gives you too much math info
This class was so hard. I worked so hard and still ended up with a C. He just expects you to love math as much as he does and wants you to understand the hardest types of each problem. Take at your own risk.
This is the best teacher I have had at GW. I have taken two courses with him and my goal is to take every one that he teaches. His passion for math gets you really into the material. He is SO helpful if you go talk to him and he is just a great guy, really cares if the students learn. If you are taking high level maths, do so with bonin, he rules!
Worst teacher i have ever had. I have taken all three clac classes and calc 1 with him was by far the hardest. My tutor struggled with some of his homework problems. Seriously avoid at all costs. I repete do not take this class under the pain of an F
Not only do I love Bonin, but I am in love with him. Take any class he teaches. He is the best teacher you will ever have.
This guy is great. Very Clear and Very helpful. Wants his students to get an A. Great teacher, not a great class but a good teacher.
THE WORST TEACHER EVER....homework is generally there to boost your grade, but it only brings it down. avoid class at all costs
Gods Truth: Unless you are a math wiz, you WILL get a C or below in this class. I had to take 2 calc classes from him. Despite my killing myself, I got a D in the first course and an F in the second. The man speaks in monotone, and refuses to explan things in plain english. He REALLY is the WORST professor at GW. You've been warned.
Makes the class interesting, seems to really enjoy what he's teaching. Very helpful so ask questions during office hours. Grades pretty fairly, though on tests you may be surprised on lack of partial credit for some. No curve really.
i used to love math before i had this guy. i used to have good grades in math before this guy. he doesn't even try to make class interesting, when people ask questions he smirks & moves on, & he's just not helpful in general. & don't count on any help from his ta either. avoid this professor at all costs.
Bonin is without a doubt the best teacher at GW. Anyone who begs to differ is clearly inferior to his level of intelligence. Bonin is doing everyone at GW a favor just by teaching here, he should be at MIT. If you have a problem with him you should really drop out now and go start flippin those burgers- say it w/ me "would you like fries w/ that"
Check it out, if you are taking math 20 you aren't good at math, you never were and you never will be. No matter what prof you had you would still get a C or below. Every math prof on this site gets a bad review by calc kids. This is the best prof at GW no question, but only take him if you actually want to learn something.
ok heres what u do to pass/get a good grade. (1)get the review sheet he gives you at the beginning and start doing the problems as you learn the subject.very impor.. MEMORIZE THE THEORETICAL PROBLEMS COS THEY'RE EXACTLY THE SAME. 20% of exams are them. ie 2 questions.(2) show up to class and take notes. make sure your notes arent all over the place
I took calc in high school and loved it, and learned all of the basic priniples before i got to college-now i hate it. Bonin is great if you're in a class for mathematitions, not if you're trying to fill your credits. He teaches proofs-which is pointless for calculus. He's a really nice guy, but shouldn't be teaching this class- don't take it
Although in the recitation the problems that have to be done each week are helpful, the lectures are very boring. He explains easily what has to be done. If you get sick or have a problem however he will not give you a make up so plan the drop the class if something comes up!
very excellent class. no expensive textbook because the notes are all online. interesting subject and he knows a lot about it, but it is not for someone who knows little about math.
hes a real jerk, he never answers your emails, and he is the most boring human being ever, thanks to him and his totally monotone voice i get to take clac again, seriously, dont ever take him, no one understands whats going on and the TA's are no help at all because english is like their 3rd language.
Yes he is somewhat hard but if you do the review sheets you are guaranteed at least a C. The theoretical questions are taken directly from the review sheet. Attendance is a must and he does have an annoying voice but he is helpful and enjoys questions. I would recommend his class as an alternative to real calc.
Bonin is so boring. I consistently fell asleep every class. The homework was pretty hard and due every week. The TA was of no help whatsoever. Please avoid.
Bonin is THE BEST profesor at GW! He is absolutely fantastic. He is incredibly clear and organized. I learned so much in this class and it was my first experience in doing proofs. Obviously, Calc kids won't like him because they don't like math. Bonin is brilliant!!! He deserves more credit.
He clearly knows what he is talking about and is the best math teacher I have had at this school! He is not an easy grader, though, so you have to put forth effort. Best part...no book!
Unfortunately, Bonin is the best of the worst. All of the calc teachers are awful, this includes Bonin. He organizes his class in the strangest way so you always learn so much new material that isn't until the NEXT exam. There are 2 midterms, 2 final, and homeworks due EVERY Friday. This class will put you to sleep.
Bonin is a good teacher. You don't have to go to class, but you will miss out on his proofs which are on all three exams. Bonin gives all of the practice, homework, recitation and review problems, and proofs that will be on the exams at the begining of the semester which is nice to have. Optimization and Related Rates are had
Good professor. Sometimes a little boring when it comes to proving stuff but otherwise clear and very helpful. Has graded homework every week and 3 exams, which aren't too easy but aren't terrible either. His TA was hell though so discussion was simply useless
Worst teacher I ever had. Do not take his class.
so incredibly boring, has a monotone voice and goes way to fast. avoid him
Bonin is willing to help any student who reaches out and asks for it. His exams are extremely similar to the review sheets he hands out at the end of a unit, so it is easy to get an A with some studying and review. Most students who complained in my class simply didn't do the practice problems he gave out.
Very boring lecturer. The class average on the first test was a 50 (that is not hyperbole, the average was a 50 out of 100).
He makes the material extremely clear. You really can't miss a class, because the material he covers each class is relevant for the tests. Go to office hours. I don't know what people are expecting from a Calc class, but I'd never taken Calc and 1220 was an easy A and 1221 was a little harder but manageable. Complainers aren't putting in the time.
He is a boring teacher- who knows exactly what he is talking about. He goes through the material really quickly and expects his students to do all of the work that he assigns. I think it is really helpful to do the discussion problems, because he goes over them thoroughly the next lecture. The TA is stupid but helps with the homework.
Bonin is an excellent professor. He posts all materials (syllabus, homework, exam reviews) for the semester at the beginning so nothing should come as a surprise. He's an effective communicator and is always available in class and out for questions. I can't speak for calc but in the upper level maths he seems genuinely excited about the sub. matter
Yea he's kind of a boring lecturer with a very monotone voice but he's a really good professor. Explains things very well and with clarity. If you have questions he always explains them no matter what. Very helpful during office hours and by email. The TA is absolutely awful though so just don't go to the recitation sections. They don't help anyway
If you don't have to take a class with Bonin, don't. He knows what he's talking about and he articulates it effectively, he's just really boring. If you care, you can pass, but he expects a lot of his students. A lot of homework, a lot of practice problems. Really requires commitment in order to pass. Very difficult class, only take if you have to.
Good guy. Speaks with a monotone but is clear and will review when needed. Gives lots of xtra credit. as long as you put in the effort (this is a lot for Calculus) you will do fine
This is the worst teacher I have ever had. To pass this class with even a C you need to add 10 additional hours a week to studying. If you have a 12-credit semester, go for it. Otherwise do NOT take this class.
Professor Bonin is the worst professor at GW. He is extremely strict and has a terrible academic policy. I was ill and he would not accept my homework even though I had a note from a medical specialist (not just student health). He is rude and does not care about his students whatsoever. Do not take this class if you do not have to. WORST decision.
One of the best teachers I've ever had! The homework is hard, but if you see him during his office hours, he is extremely helpful. His tests are much easier than the homework and almost everyone got A's or B's on them. I learned more in this class than in any other class I've taken. If you want to learn a lot, I highly recommend Professor Bonin!
He was very clear and answered all of my questions very clearly. The recitations were also very helpful. He went out of his way to make three separate grading schemes involving the homework and exams, and would choose the scheme that gave a student the highest score possible individually.
He's very nice and wants you to learn and actually cares for his students. BUT as a professor his class is just plain hard. His explanations aren't always clear and his tests are difficult because the problems are generally harder than the ones you've gone over. If you love math with a great passion, take it, if not, don't bring your GPA down.
He epitomizes the typical GW math professor. Brilliant man brought in to do research who has to teach some classes. He teaches from the theoretical perspective, which was difficult. You can probably get expect a B or better if you spend 2-5hrs outside of class studying weekly. His tests usually consist of problems that are harder than in class.
He's probably the best math teacher at Gw. He's very smart. I just don't like how he teaches the class. His tests are okay. Thank god I took this class before in hs.
Bonin is a great guy and very helpful outside of class as well. However, his class requires a lot of time outside class, and he makes material very difficult. He teaches the course as if everyone in the lecture plans to be a mathematician. The homeworks are impossible, but if you can do them you will definitely get an A in the class.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! His class was terrible. He does not know how to teach at all. While he cared about his students passing, his tests did not reflect his review sheets. I put in 8-10 hours a week and still barely passed. He does not teach basic concepts, but instead skips straight to the difficult stuff. Doesn't give you time to learn the basics.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. That's all I have to say just don't.
Honestly most of the people that aren't approving of him probably didn't put in enough work, and didn't reach for that extra help. Not many people even went to lecture. He's extremely willing to help his students, his assignments reflect the test, and they have reasonable extra credit. Go to lecture, do the homework, study, and you'll be fine.
Bonin is probably the most helpful person I've met teach Calculus I. He will slow down for anyone and entertain anyone's questions carefully. He's very meticulous with the goings of the class and dedicated for you to learn calculus; he makes SO MUCH extra material for you to practice math. He's a dry, frank, but blatantly brilliant math professor.
Very fair grader. Just do all the problems on the test review sheet and memorizes the theoretical and you will do fine. Also his office hours are the best. He will literally go though the HW from that week before you turn it in if you try before hand. A nice guy and a good class
Very intelligent and caring professor. If you ever need help, go into his office hours, as he will help you understand the topics immediately. He is very theoretical, but always goes through the concepts quite thoroughly so that you are able to understand it. Go through all practice exams and reviews and you will be good
Took him for Math 1220, and did not pass. Only take if you are very good at math and understand math easily. If you are not a math person, avoid. Took this course with another professor and did amazing, but in his class had no chance.
go to recitation & participate, he will give you extra credit. he gives you a few theoretical problems to learn for the exam, memorize them, 1 will be on the exam- giving you easy points there. tests are easy. no quizzes. homework easy, just a lot of explaining. he teaches extra theoretical stuff, because he likes it. posts lecture summaries online
Likes to make everything as difficult as possible; will take more time and energy than any of your other courses even though it is just 3 credits; homework is graded on correctness even though there is no answer key provided (not online or in the book), hard to follow his very airy voice during lectures and is condescending in person.
I have never gotten below an A- in a math course. Professor Bonin gave me a D. I was meeting with multiple students in my class to study and go over homework assignments, and I had two tutors by the end of the semester for this course. Problem was the tests were so hard. He doesn't use the textbook, and the smartest kid in my class got a B-...
Teaches the class as if students are all math majors and expects you to grasp mathematical concepts accordingly. Homework is (relatively) easy, but tests are insanely hard. Bonin somehow makes easy concepts hard and hard concepts impossible. Class average was around a 60 and doesn't curve. Avoid if at all possible.
I took this class for calc and loved this professor! His tests are hard but fair and he gives you in-depth study guide before each exam. If you study off those you will pass no problem. Their is HW but he will accept it all day meaning as long as you try on your own you can go to his office hours, work out the correct answers there and turn it in
Bonin is a nice guy but is hard to understand. You really have to give all of your effort to the homework problems, recitation problem, and class discussion problems to do well. You should also probably do extra work from the book. If you love math then you will be fine but if not then I don't recommend taking Bonin.
Bonin is a terrible teacher. Teaches everything from a theoretical perspective, which is hard to understand. I took high school calculus and got an A (like most people in the class) and understood very little in his class. He grades according to how he teaches, so everything must be done his way or you get no credit on problems. AVOID!
I really like professor Bonin. He is so patient and helpful in office hour. He provides sufficient but not too much homework so I know how to prepare for further study and exams. He also gives us extra points by answering questions in recitation. Luv!!!
Once you get used to his monotone the lectures are incredibly helpful. Two midterms and a final that are a cumulation of problems he goes over in class and assigns for homework so no surprises. Difficult grader in that every problem needs to be explained theoretically. Class was not easy, but he has the best intentions and really wants to help
His class is tough, but his lectures are helpful. I had his class at 8 am, so not many people showed up all the time, but I couldn't imagine not going and still being able to understand the material. But he sets you up for success as long as you do the extra work he suggests. He's weird and quirky, but what can you expect from a math professor
He posts everything on Blackboard (Problem solutions, lectures, recitation problems etc. ). He explains hard concepts in an easy way, class drags by slowly, but he always covers everything he is supposed to. He answers all questions. Extra points on tests for answering in recitation. HW problems can be difficult. Txtbook is really not necessary.
I borrow the tests from my friends who took Bonin's class last semester. Those questions were a little bit easier than ours. I feel like he upgraded the questions for tests this semester. Even though he gives not easy tests, he's still a good teacher.
SKIP THIS PROFESSOR, WORST AT GW.
RIP if you take this class. Only equation I learned was: Bonin GPA Destroyer
Don't expect to get an A in this class unless you know the material perfectly. Easy to get something in the B range by showing up, doing homework, and studying for tests. Doesn't write the clearest problems on tests.
I had an 8am calc class with him, so the lectures were tough to get through. However, about 1/3 of the lectures reviews practice material that is almost identical to his two tests and final exam, so its really helpful to go. He also gives bonus points on exams for participation during recitations, which can help a lot. Not exciting but good teacher
Just don't take this class with him. GPA killer. The midterms and finals have harder and more confusing problems than the review sheet.
Find someone who had Bonin for this class and borrow their exams. I had my friends exams from the previous semester, and they were almost identical. He loves theoreticals (aka memorization). Not an easy A, you need to work your ass off. I would avoid taking him if possible. DO THE RECITATION PROBLEMS, IVA IS A LIFE SAVER
If you put in the recommended 2 hours per credit-hour and actually show up to class, you can definitely do well. I didn't, so I failed. I still left with a better understanding and appreciation for math than I would have from most professors, though. Don't take him to fill out a requirement; but if you're interested, you'll do fine.
Bonin was probably the best professor I've ever had at GW. His lectures aren't special and he has a monotone voice. However, he gives back very detailed notes on assignments. He is also caring, having reached out to me after an unusually bad assignment grade to make sure everything was alright. I didn't even know he knew my name.
Best math experience at GW so far. His class is tough, but hard work is rewarded. He gives detailed feedback and seems to genuinely care that his students improve. This shouldn't be rare, but I haven't had many profs at gwu like that. Also, he finishes grading exams before you even have time to recover from them; it blows my mind everytime.
Really helpful, lectures are clear and notes are posted online after if you miss a class or get confused about anything he presented in class. The best math professor at GW easily
Bonin isn't a clear lecturer- he just lists thms on the board and uses book examples, which don't reflect the difficult exams. I would recommend u take other pure math courses with him first, know his teaching style before taking this one. He will crack down on dishonesty. If the first 4 psets seem hard to you even w/ his help, DROP IMMEDIATELY.
He is really good at explaining the materials but the exams are hard and not straight forward you must prepare for his frequent homework due.
Professor Bonin is by far the best math professor at GWU. I'm a math major and have taken multiple classes with him and with other professors. He stands apart by giving students many, many practice (not graded) problems with fully detailed solutions (he posts online). He writes his own PDF textbook for each class because he is so dedicated.
Bonin is the man. He's a little dry and not super personable, but he's the best in the department at teaching undergraduates math - without a doubt. He is the only professor posts tons of optional practice problems, with fully worked solutions, online for students to study. No other professor does this. He really cares about teaching !
Bonin is incredible, he will help you anytime of the day if you ask for it, he responds to emails quickly no matter the time of day. If you don't understand something he will go out of his way to make sure you understand all the concepts. You need to go to class and study if you want a good grade, but it's an upper level math class, it's expected.
Bonin is the BEST math professor. Everything you need to know for the class is given to you: he writes his own pdf textbooks for each class he teaches (where concepts are very well explained), he always provides a review sheet before exams, and you learn SO MUCH. You can tell he really cares about his students and wants everyone to learn and suceed
Hardest grader I've ever met. Just chill out man. Take everything over seriously, but gotta admit that he is a great teacher. The weekly homework was constantly a nightmare for me.
Bonin is great. He's so helpful and always responds to emails quickly. He makes his own textbook notes so if you miss something you can go back and re read it. Ignore the bad reviews from intro classes, once you get to upper level math you realise that people just want an easy A which isn't going to happen in a college math class. Bonin is the best
I took Professor Bonin's "Elementary Number Theory" class "on the lark" and was VERY pleasantly surprised: it was one of the most interesting classes I had ever taken. He developed his own textbook (Notes for MATH 3120) which was very clear and directly related to homework problems. He was also very adaptive in converting to online training. Bravo!
He is very quick to respond to any concerns and questions. Grading for homework could be considered harsh, but he is very helpful and approachable during office hours. Exams are much easier than homework and graded much more generously. I hope to take his classes as much as possible going forward!
Homeworks are hard
Please be more fair theres really no reason to overcomplicate things
Professor Bonin was a very kind professor, but this class is unnecessarily difficult and stressful. The material is ridiculously difficult which resulted in a ton of people dropping the class. I understand that this class prepares students for upper level math courses, but there has to be a better way to do so without it being so intense.
Professor Bonin is an incredible teacher for a class like Intro to Mathematical Reasoning. It's cliched, but he truly cares about each student. He's the most accessible professor I've ever had and will respond to emails in sometimes in fewer than 30 minutes. The class is very tough, but his custom homemade textbook is comprehensive. Take him!
If you can take a better teacher PLEASE DO. I thought his rating was average but his lecturing for single variable calc was aweful. His homework is confusing and extremely difficult (when I went for calc help, even the grad students would get confused). His test are designed to trip you up. TAKE DAIGLE IF YOU CAN
Absolutely awful. Don't take him if you have the chance.
This is the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. If you do everything he recommends, you will pass. However, there are much easier professors available. He makes the material significantly harder than it needs to be - often tutors struggle with the material. Half the class dropped out. No curves. Likely a weed out course. I learned a lot.
Avoid. Tests are much harder than the material he lectures about, not great at explaining, does absolutely no curve even if the class average is a 40.
I had a good calc background coming in so I'm not sure how good his lectures were. Tests are hard but if you do the study guide it should be fine. Doesn't allow cheat sheet when I've heard other calc teachers do
Professor Bonnie knows a lot but teaches everything theoretically to the exact definition of the concepts and it sometimes is difficult to understand them. HE TEACHES EVERYTHING IN POWERPOINT. Does not draw on the whiteboard or tries to visualize the problems.
Took his Fall 2022 class. Provides good notes, but is very dry at lecturing. Course requires ridiculous amounts of studying relative to upper math classes. Exam averages are fairly low, so he curves end of semester and a good chunk drop. He discourages and gatekeeps non-majors from pursuing further math. Embodies the wrongs of the department.
Not the most engaging lecturer. Average scores for the entire class are usually pretty bad (40-60%).
arguably one of the most important courses you will take at uni. the actual math isn't particularly hard, but the problem solving skills you need to learn are what make this class so difficult. Expect to do math for at least 10 or so hours a week outside of class. Office hours are 7 days a week and he gives you review sheets.
Avoid Prof Bonin!! He makes the most simplest topics more complicated by just reading slides and grading harshly. Class average for the midterms were in the 40s.
amazing professor for a challenging subject. very difficult.
Professor Bonin is a fantastic teacher, he takes great pride in preparing every lecture and assignment extensively, and provides excellent feedback. He teaches you a new way of thinking about math in 2971, and 3120 is a great follow-up class to learn about theory and applications of number theory.
This is a very proof-heavy class and I would recommend students take other proof-dense courses with him first to see if you can manage his expectations. The textbook he uses gives too many easy examples that don't reflect the actual rigor of his exams. So take this class at your risk otherwise Voldemort will treat your GPA like he treats Muggles.
The material is very difficult, but he approaches it with perfect clarity. Don't worry too much about failing one or two exams. Stay diligent, follow his study advice, and you will exceed.
Very harsh
Professor Bonin is the backbone of the math department, an incredible professor and mathematician.
Professor Bonin runs a challenging class, but if you put in the effort, you can excel. The lectures are dry, but studying the textbook and using resources like ChatGPT and Unstuck study can really help with prep. Overall, a tough but rewarding course.
Bad teacher. Avoid him.
Bonin gives very in depth course resources and cares a lot about feedback and improvement, you can tell he really cares about his students. He was also really chill about me submitting hw late. This is a very hard class but if u practice a little everyday u will succeed. Great professor and rewarding class, would recommend.
He makes things unnecessarily difficult; he is inflexible and rude.
Just because the course is hard doesn't mean he's a bad professor. He loves what he does and if you use the resources he gives you can make it through any class he teaches. Lectures can be boring but he provides everything you need for the homework and exams in the course notes. Take his class but know you need to focus
