210 was awesome and the lectures were always interesting; 280 not so much
THIS MAN IS SMART!!! and he uses cool words like "diss" in class! haha
he's an amazing lecturer! very interesting!
Bryant is one of the smartest, most articulate professors I've had
No Comments
Never miss his lectures---even though one was a night class!!
Has a voice like someone from the Discovery Channel.
if he said things of that sort one more time, i would have killed myself.
too many sociological presuppositions
excellent
Bryant is the best, stimulating lectures, nice and helpful.
great lecturer and class. tests are to time consuming for only 10% of final grade
Prof. Bryant is an average profesorry. Nothing bad, but nothing *great*. It's important never to miss a lecture because about 90% of the testing is based on lecture notes.
Prof Bryant is a mediocre professor. We didn't go into much depth with any of the material.
This course seemed to have just happened. It wasn't particularly interesting and his readings didn't particularly correspond to the material. As far as overall learning experience, this course is definitely below-average to average.
The first comment was the FUNNIEST comment I've ever read! It's so true... his voice belongs to the discovery channel!
He's a wonderful lecturer and I'm glad I took his course. Though, beware, I found his 'quizzes,' which were more like tests, difficult to do well on. On the other hand, I found his (2) essays to be quite easy - just explain how the topic affects society.
The best professor at the U of T. Doesnt waste time with CCNET, slide shows, "things of that sort" - rather, he just lectures AMAZINGLY well. He is crystal clear and extremely funny. All of that makes the man HOT! A+
very interesting content and the prof does a great job of bringing the material to life.
Very clear, organized, helpful, kind and generous =D
Great professor.
HAWT, HAWT, HAWT! He is one hawt prof! Lectures are amazing! The best sense of humor! Interesting, smart and very very sweet! I loved the course and would take it all over again!
sweet personality, very helpful and approachable! topics are extremely interesting and he does a superb job of relating them to everyday life! SMART! the best prof ever!
very helpful and sweet prof. lectures are interesting and he presents in an excellent way. awesome material - and what i love about him is he is not into wasting time with slides, etc ... attend your classes, pay attention and you'll get the result! and he is very very cute!
Had him as a teacher many years ago when I was at the university; he is a very decent and caring man. Wish more profs were like him.
this prof is great! his lectures are clear and interesting. Very comedic, I recommend this class!
great professor, one of the few profs i've had who can actually lecture properly and doesn't just read off slides or notes, very interesting material which he explains very clearly with great examples, his class was amazing, i would definitely take it again
Incredibly insightful, a clear lecturer and approachable professor. Course is heavy in content and as a result test prep can be time consuming (although tests are incredibly fair). Overall, though it was probably the most challenging course of the year, it also ended up being my favourite class of the year.
Soc of Rlg is an interesting topic. The book is interesting, but it doesnt correspond to lectures. If you don't go to class, you won't know what to study. The exams are pretty easy and the final wasn't nearly as bad as the other exams. The TAs were terrible and didn't communicate well with each other, the class, or the professor. Never AGAIN!
The class could have been so much better. Nothing but 2 hrs of MS Word documents displayed and spoken to. The text was NEVER discussed yet related questions appeared on tests. Useless TA's, decent term tests, some questions on the cumulative final were obscure/unexpected, and 2hrs was too short. This prof knows his stuff, he just can't teach it.
knowledgable professor teaching an interesting topic. an insightful course on religion. textbook is of little use, and attending lectures is a must for the course. In a word, the professor is very nice, and the course is interesting
Although attendance is not mandatory, you should go to class if you want to do well. The lectures clarify the material immensely and are incredibly fascinating. J. Bryant is amazing! His lectures are revelatory and illuminating, not only in the context of religious history, but also in relation to the current cultural circumstances. Take the class!
Excellent speaker, and extremely helpful when concepts were unclear. Good sense of humour. Textbook was less than useless save for exams. Exams were based primarily on lectures, however, more obscure material from lectures and textbook was present. Overall, great professor, but the textbook shouldn't be part of the course anymore.
Really great prof one of the best Ive had! His lectures are very interesting, and max 20 or 30 pages of reading per week (sometimes only 8 pages in a week! , and no readings on the final, just lecture material). To get an A you definately have to work for it, but pretty enjoyable so its not such a drag to study for it compared with other clases
Professor Bryant is an amazing Professor. Really like him a lot, since he cares about his students a lot!! However i am not happy with the way TAs mark the papers (
He's a pretty good professor in the sense that he explains his notes pretty well. You have to go to class, trust me, he gives notes but to fill out the notes with most of the info, class is a must. Tests and essays are graded super tough by the tas
He's a pretty good professor in the sense that he explains his notes pretty well. You have to go to class, trust me, he gives notes but to fill out the notes with most of the info, class is a must. Tests and essays are graded super tough by the tas. But in general the class is cool, only take it if you are interested in the topic or you won't do we
Great professor who is extremely knowledgeable not only about the topic he teaches but in general. Cares about your learning experience. I appreciated that he lectured rather than read off of slides. T.A.s were not helpful. To improve the course, should hire T.A.s who are more passionate about helping students like the professor.
Professor Bryant is an excellent instructor. His teaching style and the clarity of his lectures are unbelievable. Overall his lectures are so interesting and I learned very new and interesting material in this course from Professor Bryant. The attendance wasn't mandatory but you have to attend each lecture to really understand the material.
Professor Bryant was enthusiastic with the material, but his lectures were very bland. The content was boring and when it came to assignments and exams, the clarity was horrible. The TA's did not know anything about the content and the marking scheme and consistency was horrendous. The TA's need to be let go or the course will suffer heavily.
One of my favorite profs so far because of my interest in religion and his knowledge. Bryant knows what he's talking about, and he speaks clearly and connects all of his points (easier for you to remember content). The shortcoming comes from the TA's. They are non-responsive and grade unfairly. Take this course if you love religion but not your gpa
Amazing prof who is able to keep students totally engaged for the whole lecture; a truly great thing in my opinion. Tests can be pretty specific which can be brutal considering how much material there is from each lecture but doable. Overall a great class about looking at religion objectively that I would suggest anyone to take:)
Great educator who genuinely cares about his students and the whole education system. Very knowledgeable lecturer from whom you can expect to learn a lot about religion if you go to his lectures.
I found the course very interesting. Prof. Bryant is a great lecturer who doesn't rely on presentation slides to do the teaching. If you wish to take a true 'lecture' style class I would really recommend this course. He did provide electronic copies of his notes which I found helpful. Written assignments were especially enjoyable.
His lectures are crucial because everything shows up on the tests and the exam. There is a lot of material he covers, but you can discern the important themes and stick to those on the exams. Revise what you're doing every two-three weeks because it will make your life easy for the tests and the exams. Whatever you do, do not skip the lectures.
He is soooo amazing! I had him for sociology of religion and he was always so nice and so clear with his teaching. He really cares for his students and his lectures are well organized and clear!! He was the one professor that made me fall in love with what I was learning!!! He also does give extra points if he sees you improve in your learning. )
One of the most eloquent and clearest professors at UofT. He genuinely is concerned when students are not achieving at a high rate, and does whatever he can to ensure people walk out with the grade they want. Tests are extremely fair, with everything being covered in class. No surprises. If you listen attentively, you will do very well!
Highly knowledgeable professor who offers fluid lectures interlaced with discussions to help the class tackle its own unique aspirations for the course material, and is willing to adjust curriculum according to students. Loves to go in-depth on certain subjects to make the class more interesting and engaging. Classy and relaxed.
Professor Bryant is probably one of the most smartest sociology professors I've had the honour of being lectured by. He's so incredibly smart that it's almost intimidating, but he breaks down these classical theorists and makes it SO relevant to your life, it's actually inspiring. Hands down, one of my favourite sociology professors at this school!
Prof Bryant's attitude is super chill, which I love. I find theory really difficult (took the course so I could read Malcolm X but it's actually classical theory-intensive); if you enjoy theory and thinkers, I recommend the course. Studied incessantly to get low 80s so if you're looking for an easy A, this ain't it (but def possible to do alright).
Professor Bryant is a truly inspirational teacher. His classes were entertaining and he seems to really care about his students and helping them learn. I would definitely recommend taking a class with him if you get the chance. He goes above and beyond to help students succeed. You can do great in SOC250 as long as you pay attention to his lectures
Classes were disorganized, but he seems nice otherwise
Prof Bryant is THE BEST PROF at UofT! He's extremely caring as he wants all his students to do well. If your grade improves over the course period, then he will give you extra points! Assignments are fun to do & tests are fairly easy. Marking criteria is also clear & fair. I would take any class he teaches because he truly acknowledges your effort.
Awesome professor, actually knows how to clearly express what he is talking about. Would say that he was one of the better profs at UFT (as many assistant profs in other classes are not able to clearly teach on the same level as him ) his experience is apparent in his lectures - very knowledgeable ( actual university-level teacher )
Professor Bryant was a pleasure to listen to. The depth of his knowledge shows in every lecture, and his use of anecdotes and other historical references both gives context for understanding and keeps it interesting. Some people found it a lot of information then to sift through, you just need to listen and not try to transcribe the whole lecture.
Nice Professor and very respectful! Makes lectures less boring and goes through required reading material page by page for our better understanding. Would definitely take him again.
Professor Bryant is one of the best professors at U of T. He is exceptionally smart, explains the material very well, and his lectures are well organized and to the point. He provides qualitative feedback, cares deeply about his students, and is very fair. A really amazing professor!
Professor Bryant is one of the most intelligent professors I have had at UofT. While the content is dry, he doesn't use a textbook, but goes over the readings in lecture. His tests are completely fair, and if you pay attention in lecture, take good notes you will do great. He cares about the success of his students and is very approachable!!!
Hes an absolute amazing lecturer with interesting content! The TA was amazing. It was not text book heavy so as long as you go to class and pay attention there is no excuse to not do well. Hes insanely intelligent and clearly passionate about the material. Its so easy to genuinely enjoy going to class. Plus he is easy to talk to after class.
Prof. Bryant is hands down one of the smartest individuals I have met. I just graduated from U of T and they really don't make Profs like this anymore. His lectures do not just pertain to religious history - they are lessons in philosophy, art, science, geography, poetry and literature. He is a polymath and his lectures are very enlightening.
One of the most INSPIRING professors! Did not care much about religion entering the course, but learned an abundance finishing the course! Professor Bryant is one of the best profs at U of T; he does not make his tests impossible. Attend class and you'll receive an A or A+!
Look, he's a great prof. I learned from his lectures, but you cannot keep focus listening to him drone on for 3 hour lectures. You better be ready to list every exact term on tests or else lose tons of marks. And the essay on Marx was heavily focused on an analysis of modern economics when this is a sociology course! I don't know economics! >:(
He's a really nice guy, and honestly tests are generally very easy if you study for them. His lectures can be pretty boring and slow, so prepare for that. I took it in the evenings, so it just wasn't ideal for that. Disappointed in his lack of accommodation in response to COVID
Really cares about his students. Handled the pandemic very well and cancelled the final test and replaced its grade with your best grade overall. Wants his students to succeed and believes the math shouldn't define what your final mark is, willing to bell curve when he can. Lectures can be dry but definitely worth it.
Professor Bryant is by far one of the nicest professors in UofT. He is very caring as he wants all students to do well. His lectures are very informative. SOC201 is a compelling course because it profoundly explores the classical theories. If you attend the lectures and do the readings, you will do great in his classes.
Prof. Bryant's class was quite enjoyable as a Sociology major. He made sure his students understood course concepts and explained everything thoroughly. Also with the COVID-19 pandemic, he offered a smooth transition, cancelling the last test and the final exam being replaced with a reflection. Overall, do the readings and study (recommended!)
My favourite professor at the university. I have taken all 3 of his courses and not only is he really intelligent and funny, he is the nicest person I have ever met. He truly cares for his students and goes above and beyond. If you just sit and listen to his lectures you will truly learn something. The university needs more professors like him.
The most intelligent professor I have ever encountered. I was hesitant to take Religion as I was not that interested in it, but really enjoyed his lectures. It turned out to be the best decision. He cares about his students, promptly answers emails with extra resources, is very accommodating, funny and his assignments are very fair and interesting.
He was an amazing prof and one of my fav. I have never heard of such an amazing lecturer I found his lectures and perspective on subjects to be extremely interesting and I was totally captivated for the two hour lectures. The grading was fair and due to the COVID situation, he was giving people higher marks. Cant wait to take another class with him
As someone who struggles with grasping dense theory (and related texts), I really appreciated taking Bryant's theory classes as his explanations were easy to follow and to comprehend. Classes were at night which was a bummer but worth it if you need a professor to appropriately "dumb down" sociological theory for your understanding!
Bryant is very intelligent and you can tell he wants everyone to do well in his course but the readings he assigns are incomprehensible and the exams follow an essay format which will definitely take a hit to your final grade. The lectures are extremely long and pretty boring so would not recco any 3 hour classes
Many Professors today are oblivious to other fields, although they may be specialist in their chosen field, Professor Bryant however is a polymath, his knowledge is so extensive, he has mastery over fields ranging from sociology, classics, religion, philosophy. Simply put: Brilliant, charismatic, and charing.

I had the opportunity to take SOC201 and SOC251 with Prof. Bryant and he truly goes above and beyond for you to understand the course topics as they can be difficult to interpret at times. You can also tell he loves contemporary sociology by the way he teaches & you'll end up loving the course topics too as they are highly relatable!
Professor Bryant is really nice and approachable outside of the classroom. His lectures are inspirational and make you think about really important social issues. I really like his lecture styles and contents. SOC251 is a bit hard and needs time to invest in readings and lectures.
I took both SOC201 and SOC251 in 2019/2020. He made the content interesting and enjoyable and his classes were always a joy to go to. He was especially receptive to student concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic. He even changed the marking scheme of the class to ensure students had an easier time finishing the class while transitioning to online.
The BEST professor in the sociology department. He cares so much for his students and I think he really just wants to see that reciprocated. Ask questions, get involved, but even if you do not do that often, choose his class. Trust, there is a reason why his lectures fill up. He wants his students to succeed and is very clear on what will be tested
Really nice Professor, always enjoy the lecture!!
Professor Bryant is an amazing lecturer and he cares deeply about his students. He uses electronic documents instead of a paper textbook because he knows how expensive textbooks can be for students, and he tries his best to make sure you do well in his class. Ask him questions and he is sure to answer it to the best of his capability.
Very caring professor. Do ask him questions and participate in discussions with him.
Professor Bryant is extremely understanding and would do anything to help you. I took two of his courses in the summer, he provides exceptional support if his students need one. I was sick and only informed him one hour before a test, he gave me an extra day and a couple advice to get rid of my headache. His replies were genuine and very caring.
Make sure you attend to Online class every week!!! Take notes carefully about what professor said and try to understand the whole the picture or the logic of the historical development. Readings could be difficult. Classical theory is not very easy but I think professor have already tried to explain them pretty well. He is very very nice!!!
Fine enough but tough course. Prof. Bryant is good.
Such a kind and accommodating person. He always related the material to the real world and his own personal connection which made the lectures enjoyable and engaging. They were very long though and often went overtime. Readings and tests are quite difficult (only downside of the course), but he explains every concept in-depth.
Professor Bryant is patient with every student in solving their questions, but the lectures are too boring, and he always talks about many extra events unrelated to the course. Also, one of the TAs was mean in grading, I totally couldn't understand the grade they gave me, and that was so frustrating.
It's a friendly professor, and if you ask questions of you're sure to get the answers you want. But you should also be prepared for some moderate reading. Overall I would recommend coming to Professor Joseph Bryant's lectures!
Professor Bryant is a lovely and kind professor. His detail oriented and highly understanding teaching philosophies puts him at one of the best classical theory teachers out there. He is very educated on all the topics! Loved his course!
He's a caring and responsive teacher, genuinely passionate about his subject. Quick to reply, considerate of personal matters, and his lecture style using personal notes and numerous examples is engaging. Tests are very fair, focuses most on what he spends most time on in lecture (short answers, T/F). Would definitely take another course with him.
Very intellectually stimulating lecturer. Professor Bryant creates an atmosphere that helps develop students' understanding of sociological theory (lots of examples used to make concepts more digestible). Do the readings, go to lectures, and you will succeed. Assignments allow you to demonstrate and develop your understanding of the material.
great guy, just be careful it can be easy to slack and not attend lectures/take notes but it will bite u in the ass when time comes for tests (even online) and essays. if u go to lecture each week and give ample time to do essays youll be fine. overall nice person though.
Considering the background of this class-- typically being a full year course narrowed down into a semester long course, Professor Bryant did an excellent job in narrowing down the information clearly. He was also extremely receptive to student questions and gave great study tips for the exams.
Really great prof! Knowledgeable and patient. Learned a lot in his class.
He often goes off topic from the readings and analyzes texts that are not included in the reading. He is extremely passionate but expects you to be knowledgeable about the history of sociology so it becomes difficult to keep up if you do not have this preexisting knowledge. Overall, he is quite relaxed but the course is unstructured.
Professor Bryant is a kind and knowledgable professor. His lecture style may take a moment to get used to, but they are packed with a lot of information regarding the readings. Attendance is not mandatory but whatever he spends time on in the lec, will most likely be on the tests, making things pretty straightforward. :)
Good attitude, definitely passionate about the subject, however, lectures were extremely dry which made the material difficult to follow.
Such a greta prof. So kind.
Lectures were dull with no slides only long readings on the board, but no tutorials. There's 4 300 word writing reflections, a few small papers that were very straightforward, and two term tests, that are marked fairly, and were pretty easy if you know the readings and study. Honestly a chill class and a chill prof who's very knowledgeable and fair
Prof. Joseph highlights key concepts and shares his notes, outlining what's crucial for tests and assignments. You don't have to take detailed notes, allowing you to focus on understanding the material. Attending lectures, engaging, and completing a few assignments can lead to excellent marks. I really enjoyed the readings! Best professor ever!
Professor Byrant is great, you can feel the passion that he has for the course. The content of it is genuinely intriguing and fun, however, the TAs are tough graders. If you want a good grade, you need to attend all of his lectures and be a good writer.
Kind and this is my second class with him, but some consistent downfalls have been his choices in TA's and lack of understanding around technology. Both the TA's I've had with him felt disconnected from the proff, and gave information that would go against the assignment/test expectations. He also did not know how to work tech but it was zoom...
