Joe is one of the funniest professors I've had. He keeps lecture fun and is a great guy. He also really listens to input from students and will change something if they want him too. The class isn't too easy but it's Chemistry.
Yay for Joe! He is the funniest teachers I've had. Chem is a dull class but watching him run into the desk and screw up demos keeps the class moving. He also really cares about his students and makes sure everyone is understanding what is going on.
This is a difficult class, but it's one of the few people actually attend lectures; they are so interesting. The demos being screwed up and things exploding are well worth the time. He's a great (and humorous). If you have to take it, take it with him. :)
I enjoyed this class. A few of the tests were a bit unfair. Like the first one. Its a good class though and I would advize anyone to take it with Burnette insted of Greenbow. JOE ROCKS
Burnett is probably the best guy to take quant with. He really cares that his students do well, as shown with his many review sessions. He also makes awesome study guides for the tests, and sometimes gives out candy during lecture!
Great teach
Prof. Burnett is great fun to listen to; I've enjoyed his class a lot. And he did say today that he checks these for fun to see what everyone says about him. So if you see this, Professor Burnett, know that we think you're a great teacher.
Professor Burnett makes chemistry fun. He makes lecture interesting, and his demos are awesome (it's hilarious when he messes them up!).
Joe is a great professor! He makes coming to lecture fun and his demos are awesome. Has good teaching methods.
He makes class way more interesting than it should be!
Joe is awesome! He is always willing to take time out and make review sessions when students are having a difficult time. He also has a question box so that you don't have to worry about asking questions in front of so many students. His demos are hilarious and he's really laid back. I love Joe!
Joe is awesome- Chem is hard but he makes it bearable. He will devote time to review sessions and meeting with kids that he doesn't have to but does anyways. He is the best!
Joe is an AWESOME professor!! He really cares about his students and will do whatever it takes to help us learn the material!! Plus, he makes chemistry a lot of fun! Who would have thought that could happen?!?

One of the best teachers i've had at Iowa State!
The class is easy although the tests are hard. They are primarily calculation. Joe makes lecture fun. He attempts to make jokes but rarely succeeds. His demos often are unsuccessful.
Awesome Professor.
Very easy.
Joe made this class hilarious... It was nice having another option for lectures instead of Gebrehysus or however you spell it... that guy was aweful. Joe's lectures were fun filled and interesting.
Good Guy, Good teacher, nuff said
He was a very nice guy and did a lot of demos to keep the class interested. He did make a lot of errors and caused more confusion than he should have. But I guess all teachers make mistakes at times.
Funny Guy!
Enjoyed his class. Chem is not one of my fav subjects, but he made it so fun!
Funny guy, although he tries to make these awful jokes that he says were jokes after they were told. He definately knows his stuff, although he makes the dumbest mistakes in lecture. Makes chemistry interesting with his demos, also he'll stop in the middle of lecture to get some life back in the class
Intelligent, entertaining, but horrible handwriting.
Joe is a lot of fun and makes chemistry about as interesting as possible. He is always concerned about whether everyone understands what he is trying to teach and is very helpful.
Very easy to understand, very helpful if you have anything you don't understand. Will work with you until you understand. Makes lecture fun!
His demos make the class most interesting kind of like Mr.Wizard's world of Chemistry. He definitely helps you wherever you may be having difficulty. His tests aren't made to give trick questions very straightforward! Also gives commercial breaks to ensure we are following.
One of the few classes i was never able to fall asleep in because he made it so interesting
If you're taking General Chemistry, you gotta have Joe. He makes a class that could be very boring very interesting with demos and jokes. He uses a lot of his own time to hold review sessions, etc.
I LOVE him! he's so much fun, and you can skip most of it and not be too bad off.
Very good at teaching very easy to understand concepts. And I love his dimenstrations.
Best. Professor. Ever.

Very arrogant. Hell make you feel like an idiot if you come to him with questions.
Don't be fooled by him, he's a jerk. And ladies: he might be ****.
He's an okay professor. He has a great sense of humor, and he really cares about your interest and understanding of chemistry. A word of caution, however, he may be a little arrogant, and the class may be tough(for me, at least), but nonetheless he tries to make chemistry interesting, and he does a good job with it too.
A good professor; very enthusiastic. He loves chemistry and does a good job of explaining concepts in lecture. His demonstrations also do a good job of keeping people awake.
Great prof, is extremely helpful as far as making sure students stay well informed. Tries his best to make sure students' questions are answered. A variety of interesting demos supplement lecture material quite nicely. Plus, he has a great sense of humor. The only downside is that the screensavers on his computer can be very distracting.
Joe is an awsome teacher. He explains things well and keeps the class fun.
He's really funny. He makes his lectures very interesting!
very entergetic, but he makes mistakes on everything he tries to show you, then has to show you again very hard to learn from stay away from him.
He went quickly in lecture and he created tests that little things could kill you. But all in all, the class was not too bad. And clicker quizzes were easy points, along with homework, although they could get long.
He is cocky and arrogant. He thinks hes hilarious but honestly he pretty obnoxious. He will make you feel like a moron and he'll certainly make you look like a moron if you come to him with any questions regardless of what the question might be. To be frank, hes a jerk.
If you do not pass this class, it is because you were not trying. Joe's test questions are not trying to "trick" us or make it more difficult that it needs to be. He devotes 2 hrs of his own time EVERY WEEK to review sessions. He assigns HW problems that reflect what will be on the tests. The class does move fast.
Joe is a great teacher and makes me enjoy the class not to mention how easy his exams are.
He is very good.
He really cares about the students and wants everyone to do well. He holds multiple review sessions before each test outside of class time which are really helpful.
Joe is great. He want students to succeed and is always willing to help. He find excellent ways to relate material.
great and very energetic teacher
Best teacher ever !
Joe_B is a good teacher, he's very interesting and entertaining with his movies and demonstrations; but goes fast and sketchily covering material even though it should all be a H.S. review. He's tricky on tests too, easy to get a B, hard to get an A.
Joe is the man.
Joe is about as good as a chem prof. can get
Very helpful and easy to understand. Prof. Burnett is also easy going and fun, and keeps the class focused yet entertained.
Joe is a great professor. He makes the class so interesting with his in-class experiments and his joke telling keeps you awake. Overall, the best teacher I've had at ISU.
He is a great teacher and does alot to keep student interest. The class itself was harder, lots of homework problems and the tests are ok, but can get tricky. Don't get behind in this class, if you stay ahead, you'll do fine.
Great Guy. Makes class fun and teaches the material in ways you can understand.
Greatest professor I've had at ISU so far. As good as they come.
I actually didn't do so well in this class, but I think it's mainly due to poor instruction in high school, and so I was just behind the curve a little bit. Joe is an awesome teacher and a really nice guy. I wish he was my teacher for every other class I have. I'm just not much on chem - but that certainly doesn't make him a bad teacher!
Joe is a Great teacher that will help you understand the material. The class is on the hard side, but he has review sessions that will help before a test. If you have questions, ask and you will do fine.
By far THE BEST teacher I have had at ISU thus far! It's really nice to have a teacher who actually cares about their students for once. I actually enjoy coming to class! If there is anything you don't understand he is so willing to help you or email you explanations. Make sure to go to class because he uses clickers daily! Fabulous instructor!

Joe is a great professor. He explains everything and if you don't get it he will take the time to make sure you get it. He honestly cares about his students too.
Great instructor..very helpful if you ask for it!
Joe is a great teacher for a subject most people find difficult! His lectures are very helpful and interesting! Uses clickers for lecture quizzes so make sure to go! Tests are fairly easy as long as you study! Great guy, very helpful if you ask for it! Holds review sessions often. Really wants students to succeed!
Joe is awesome and very helpful!! Best professor I've had!
I enjoyed the class.
BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD AT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY (AND I AM A SENIOR NOW!) you should go out of your way to make sure he teaches you! Amazing person!
Joe is a great guy. He is a good teacher and actually cares about YOU as a person. I had H1N1 and he said he would let me drop my next text grade because he knows people tend to do worse when they're sick. If it wasn't for him teaching, I would never go to the 8 o clock class!
Awesome :)
Just like everyone before me, I'll say it again...Joe is an amazing professor! He really made chemistry enjoyable to learn and fun!
Best professor I've ever had. Really cares... you're lucky to have him as a teacher!
Joe is awesome!! I had to take this class again due to dropping it the previous semester. He makes sure he covers everything and explains it extremely well. If you ever get a chance to take one of his courses, do it!!
He is great teacher! His teaching style is really good as well. Get this professor if you can!
i learned more from him then Kingston and Greenbowe the other 2 chem 177 teachers
It was hard to get to know him in 177 because the class size was so big, but now that I'm in 178, I really miss his teaching style. He was helpful in class, and made lectures fun whenever he could.
Very good teacher. Took notes along with the students, which made him easy to follow. Chem is hard but he makes it fun. Plus, he plays Disney movies before class started
I loved his teaching style and it was so fun, even though they are large lectures if you sit in the front row and BS with him he gets to know you and it is really interesting. Great guy!
Very entertaining lecture and made coming to ISU a comfortable transition. He did his best to make sure everyone was understanding the material. I liked this lecture over greenbowe for 178
Very engaging, humorous and helpful. Shows Disney movies before class, takes notes with the class, and sends emails to summarize lessons. Fantastic lecturer, and helpful ourside of class too!
hes passionate about his job and it shows. you'd be lucky to have him.
He's incredibly easy to understand and he e-mails the class with a summary of class, example problems, and even videos or pictures to help understand the concepts better. He's an excellent chemistry teacher!
I am now a senior at Iowa State. Joe is in my top 5 best professors at Iowa State. Very smart, helpful, and nice to students. I though he was fair and taught the material well even though it's tough to teach chemistry. He was always willing to help us out and he structured the class very well to help students learn. Very good professor!!!
I took 177 with him and 178 with the other professors and I wished the entire time it were Joe teaching. He's a total nerd and is really enthusiastic about his material. I highly recommend him!
Awesome professor, great lectures, and shows various disney movies before class, and he tells you to call him Joe
Very interesting
Amazing profesor. One of my favorites so far! Definitely recommend his class!
Very entertaining and interesting professor.
Super fun and personable professor. Easy to understand and explains the concepts well.
Great professor. He keeps class interesting and does a good job of explaining things and answering questions.
Absolutely the best professor I have had at ISU. Very intuitive and loves chemistry. Classes are never boring and exams are a breeze if you attend lectures.
Great professor had a blast with him, hated chem before taking the class but looked forward to it with him teaching
Joe's a great teacher!! He does a great job engaging students during lecture and has fun experiments. He made this chemistry class a lot easier than I thought. Go to class and you will learn everything you need to know for the exams.. which are easy!
Great teacher, his demos will keep you interested and he know his stuff.
He is a great professor! very willing to explain concepts in class and the tests are very similar to lectures.
If you go to class and try, you will pass. Joe is a funny guy who is GREAT at explaining chemistry. He tests fairly and makes lectures interesting and easy to pay attention to. My complaint is that there is lots of homework, but if you can do it all there isn't much need to study for tests. He wants every student to succeed and enjoy class.
Best professor I have had yet in college.
Great proffessor. One of the best I've had.
He is a very good professor. The tests were pretty easy, which was always nice.
He is a genuine dude, I'd go as far as to say a stud. He wants us to do well and makes chem 167 a pretty easy course. It's just a lot of work outside class. HW, Pre lecture quizzes and Clicker questions, and Recitation quizzes.
He is an excellent professor, know what he is doing, love the subject, and many fun demonstrations!! Make sure to attend the class, then the tests are piece of cake!
amazing professor that will have you on the floor laughing. pretty much one of the best professors at iowa state.
This guy is definitely one of my favorite professors. He has a great sense of humor and likes to connect with his students. If you sit in the front row, he will get to know you and poke fun at you in the lectures. Although the material can be hard, he presents it well and the tests do cover the material taught. Not an easy A, but still a fun class!
Dr. Burnett is one of the best teachers on campus. He is funny and loves to engage with students. The class is made for all students to pass as long as they make an effort. Get ready for bad jokes and Disney movies that he shows before class, always great for the 8am Monday mornings.
Excellent teacher. Had most organized class including online notes I've ever seen. Homework was always appropriate. This class was the template for how all other courses should be run. Very happy about. Not saying the material is easy but he does everything in order to make it doable. You'd be lucky to get Joe as a teacher.
Excellent Professor
All of the notes were online. Go to class and pay attention and you will be fine. I almost felt that the class was too easy, thought Thermodynamics would be a little more difficult than that.
He's a great professor who's very organized. He gives lots of resources to help you out of class. This course was pretty boring, but he definitely tries his best to make it more fun by cracking jokes every now and then (the jokes aren't always funny). There's homework every week. Tests are fair as he tells you exactly what to study for them.
Prof Joe is a super cool dude who makes incredibly boring material somewhat bearable.
I have been waiting all year to write this review. Hands down best prof I have had at ISU. Amazing sense of humor and his (not always) hilarious jokes make lecture interesting. The course content is difficult, but he does everything exactly how it should be done and makes it understandable. I have never seen a prof care about his students more.
Joe is pretty easy going and can be pretty entertaining. He lets you use a cheat sheet for the exams so the exams are not too bad. He lectures can be pretty boring but as long as you take notes and do the homework you should get a pretty good grade. He gives points for attendance and in class work so it's a good idea to go to class.
He is literally the best professor I have ever had. His tests are super fair and he allows a cheat sheet. There is no curve in this class because his test averages are some of the highest I have ever seen. Really goofy, approachable and a really great guy. If I could, I would have him teach me everything. If you are struggling he will help you.
Joe was incredibly caring and willing to work with you if you need to miss classes or exams for an emergency. Subject matter was dry but Joe is funny and always keeps class interesting. Work hard and get started on HW early so you can go to his office hours for help when you get stuck.
Joe was a great lecturer. He was very passionate about what he taught and tried to make everything interesting and hilarious. The difficult part of this class was both the homework and the exams. They were very tough, so I'd recommend studying off of reviews, practice exams, and homework. The final replaces all lower test scores if you do better.
Seems like an alright guy and takes pride in keeping a well organized class. However, he scheduled our first exam on the night of the fall career fair and REFUSED to change it, even when made aware over a month in advance. On top of that he gave us hw that week. I get it you're a chem prof, but 95% of your class is Chem Es. Be more accommodating!
Joe is very passionate about what he does. He definitely makes the class interesting by throwing candy at people who answer questions correctly and cracking jokes here and there. He is clear about what he wants and how he grades. Homework is given weekly (Mostly from the textbook) and Exams aren't too hard. Excellent professor for a tough course.
Best teacher for Chem 325. His grade structure for the class is very lenient which is amazing since this class actually has hard concepts.
Joe is hands down my favorite professor that I have ever had, he is funny and makes lectures fun. The material he gives is very challenging, but he makes it easy, he gives clear instruction on what is going to be on the exams and is not there to trick you. I would gladly take another class with joe.
Joe is a great professor. He makes lecture interesting and is very funny. He cares about his students and is willing to help anyone when needed. I recommend Joe for CHEM325
Joe is amazing! He is super kind and seems like a fantastic person. His lectures, however, taught me little to nothing. He spends a long time deriving things and doesn't spend enough time talking about concepts and explaining the material. If you have time to read the book before every lecture then do it, it saved me in his class!
Joe is a great professor! He not only cares about chemistry, but he wants the students to succeed at the subject and teaches in a way that is encouraging and humorous. I felt comfortable asking questions and he was also very accommodating with any issues that arose. I was scared of quantum mechanics, but it was not that bad and I had fun!
Before taking the first exam, the lectures make the material seem very intimidating. However, the exams are very fair based on the homework and problem sets. The professor is great. I actually learned something in this class, which is a rare occurrence. Attend the TA's exam reviews and office hours, it will help a lot.
By far one of the best professors I have ever had. I have not finished the course yet, but I wanted to share that he is amazing. He cares about his students and does everything he can to help them succeed. Joe is phenomenal, and I'd take this course again just to have him again. He made me like quantum mechanics...
Overall I think Joe is a good teacher. I think he honestly tries his best to help out his students and he tries to be fair about things. Not a bad choice for a quantum teacher.
Joe thrives to see his students succeed and provides us with the information to help us succeed. He'll work through problems in class and do notes with the class which helped me stay on track with the lecture. I looked forward to going to his lectures simply because he seemed like such a nice guy. He's very helpful in answering any questions!
He's a dedicated professor who cares a lot about the subject. The material is pretty dry and sometimes complex, but if you show up to the lectures, you should do well on the tests.
He is very funny and cares a lot about his students. Class wise he gives a lot of extra credit; it's on very exam and worksheet. The material can be tricky, but overall he does a good job teaching it. If you are having trouble with a topic try watching the YouTube channel Organic Chem Tutor.
Blew stuff up in class. The homework modules took forever to complete.
The class isn't too difficult to follow if you attend lectures and do the homework, it can also be useful reading the textbook. He was funny and you can tell he cares about what he does
Great guy, and a great professor. Cares about what he does. Little heavy on the homework side, but he gives you a few weeks to get one module done, and they only require one or two questions each. Tests cover exactly what they say they will; no surprises. His demonstrations are fun, too. Lit up a jack-o-lantern for Halloween. Loved the class
Joe was by far one of my favorite teachers I had first semester, he always made sure we were having fun in lectures by telling jokes and doing experiments to make sure we were paying attention. He cares a lot about the students and provides a TON of materials to help you prepare for exams and be successful in the class!
Dr. Burnett is an amazing professor! His lectures cover a lot of material so be prepared to take notes. Test-wise, there is extra credit, and lecture material is accurately reflected on the exam. I would attend 1 SI session per week and go to at least one review session before each exam. Take advantage of the exam cheat sheet you are given as well!
He gives good lectures although he moves too fast sometimes with not enough time spent explaining things. I like how there are practice problems on TopHat. He also gives demonstrations in class. Tests are all multiple choice and easy if you go to lectures and do the homework.
His in-class teaching was not very good over complicated everything.
He's simply him.
A great professor really tries to make lectures fun. Top Hats were helpful, and he tried to explain stuff well. Several experiments in class that were fun to watch.
Professor Burnett makes lectures engaging with demos and humor. The textbook and TopHat assignments are helpful for exam prep. I'd recommend using Unstuck study alongside other study tools to ace this class.
I was worried quantum mechanics was going to be a difficult class, but Joe made the experience much better than expected. The problem sets can sometimes be long and difficult, but not awful if you do some each day. Exams were fair based on lecture content, and the study guide he gives for each exam was very thorough. Best option for quantum.
Joe makes a dry subject digestible. Tests are very fair, with no trick questions.
Joe is super nice and very approachable if you ever have questions. Chem 211 is a very technical class that can get a little tedious, but Joe always trys to make lecture enjoyable and memorable. The exams are very similar to previous exams, so you know what to expect. Attendance is taken through tophat, but he typically gives the answer in class.
Joe is my favorite professor I've had so far. You can tell he really cares about his students and that he is enthusiastic about chemistry. He doesn't read off of slideshow presentations. Instead, he hand-writes notes during the lecture so that you can easily follow along in your own notebook. He understands that chemistry is difficult to learn.
