Unconstructive towards student comments and attitudes.
Dr. Califano has a strong passion for teaching and is very informed
Very much a father-figure
One of the best teachers I've ever had! Thanks Dr. C!
Prof Califano's lectures made me a better person and he is always there to help

WHAT A WEIRDO, WHAT DOES HE ACTUALLY TRY TO ACCOMPLISH BY RAMBLING ON AND ON ABOUT THINGS? And he's full of himself, and he has no reasons to be that way. He is an old man who hates everyone and goes out of his way to make lives miserable.
He likes to hear himself talk and sound like a hero. Maybe if he actually tried to teach, students could respect him for that.
he hates students, and he thinks hes Gods gift to man
Dr. Califano likes us to just learn from the materials that he wrote (which are more unclear than if they were in Greek). He never answered a question straight when I asked and his notes don't help at all. This was one of the hardest classes I ever took.

is it just me or does he really believe that he is the most holy person on the planet? people who think they're God's gift to men usually aren't
I really did not learn much from this class. i really don't think he is such a mean guy but he does think he knows everything.
Great person; however, he's in pain a LOT, as in, needs pain killers--but, he doesn't take any (you can tell his pain from the expressions on his face). If you're Orothodox Catholic, or hate contemporary philosophy, TAKE HIM!!!
Clear, concise, to the point, and provides critizism of the philosophers others won't talk about--otherwise, this class would depress me from the philosophies alone.
Very sound philosophy prof.

I definitely enjoyed phi20 with Dr. Califano--enough so that I considered taking his medical ethics course even though I was an edu major. Very interesting discussions.
He is the greatest Philosophy professor ever! He knows the material. A lot of people don't have to judge him because they refuse to do any work, they want an easy way out... There is no easy way out in college, its HARD WORK!!

Overall he had his ups and downs. He only talked about his family and did not cover anything that seemed to be ethics like.
what a jerk, dont bother arguing, he is stubborn and the tests are vary hard, if u take his class, do the paper....
Dont take him..thats all there is to it
Dropped the class after the first meeting ... Maybe he's a nice man, but it took me only one class to realize how BORING this semester would be. Makes you wanna sleep.
Dr. Califano is the most kind understanding man in the NY Metro area, if you don't believe me...Just ask him he will be happy to go on about how great he is FOREVER. Knows his philosophy. He is cordialI guess. He is VERY conservative in the Catholic Sense
JERK!!!!!!!!!!!
wonderful
Very unclear & disorganized lectures; speaks about many irrelevant topics and stubborn. Doing take home final RIGHT now; VERY DIFFICULT; avoid this professor, nice guy: YES, good professor: NO.
Poor Explainer during lecture and what's going to be on test's and also on assighnments. Very unfair grader. Had to speak with the Dean since he messed up my grade and claimed he was right.
One of My favorite professors @SJU, This teacher has the ability to make complex, issues understandible and enjoyable. God Bless you Doc!
sucks. i hated his class, and to a certain extent, i think i hated him. it took him 3 weeks to finally give us a syllabus, and all he does is talk about his family. if you disagree with him on a point, it's like he forces his opinion down your throat.
DR CALIFANO WAS A TOUGH PROFESSOR, AND STICKS VERY STRONGLY TO HIS BELIEFS. SOME STUDENTS MAY NOT LIKE THIS BUT I LEARNED A LOT FROM HIM. HE DOESN'T SPOON FEED THE ENTIRE COURSE LIKE SOME PROFESSORS BUT IT MEANS THAT YOU ACTUALLY HAVE TO PUT IN EFFORT
he only talks about his family and he never really prepares for class. the final exam is based on take home exam and final paper, sucks, no extra credit....
Rambles way too much in class. Needs to lighten up a bit.
This professor just RAMBLES - he is VERY unclear, talks only about himself and his family, is very sanctimonious, and there is absolutely NO LOGIC at all to his lectures. I will NEVER take another course with this professor.
I would recommend him to anyone who is willing to learn philosophy. He gives you so many notes that have clear explanations. He gives you the exams in which you have to write essays, but they are pretty clear from his notes. Just review his notes everyday, you will definitely get an A.
Bad Bad Bad dont take this professor he is just terrible. He was unclear and I just coudlnt wait for the class to be over.

HORRIBLE
He is the worst teacher I have ever seen. He does not prepare, always talks about his family, Gives a homily every class, talked about the seal of confession for three classes and it isn't even a theology class. Just dont take him unless you have no choice.DO NOT ARGUE WITH HIM! YOULL REGRET IT
Lets face it their some teachers that give bonus points for signing your name. In this class you have to work and actually test yourself. This is what you pay for when you go to college, if not take mansions of long Island or underwater basketweaving. Dr. Califano rewards all for hard work

A lot of time he doesnt show up and hes very boring. but hes really isnt that hard. but if you mess up early you will do bad
Horrible. Didn't get the syllabus until 3 weeks into the semester. Spent way too much time talking about his family with no apparent relevance to the class topic. Judgmental - careful, he's a deacon. He doesn't present topics in an instructive manner but more like, I'm right and this is what I think. He only gave a final, which is take-home, but difficult. Don't take him if you want to learn. You might be able to pull out a decent grade, though, seeing as how there's only the final to contend with.
Oh Man! The only reason I passed that class was b/c I spent 12 years in Catholic school and had an idea what he was talking about. Write everything he tells you and spit it back in the final. I'd recommend not taking him just to spare yourself.
So horrible it hurts. Interrupts students when they speak. Actually says "whatever" in responding. Spent 3 classes giving out the same paper topics. Easy, yet piously awful.
Horrrrrrrrrible! Run if u see him coming
absolutley !*&#ing horrible!!!!1
He's ok teacher. He can talk about his family for every example he gives in ethics. He gives surprises quizzes and test. If you decide to take him, go to class everyday and write down everything he says. On the day of the test, rewrite what he said, I guarantee you an A. Also, show him that you conservative, even if you not. He can be funny at time
I can't believe Dr. Califano is still there. I had him in 1973-1974. Excellent teacher.
He is not a horrible man but his class is a complete waste of time. I got an A but did not learn anything at all from him. Research all of your papers/take homes online and you will be fine. Don't bother going to class or taking notes. Do not take if you want to learn anything or be able to comfortably participate in class.
Great teacher and Life mentor
Professor Califano is the type of person who gives you your tuition's worth.I admire his intensity of faith and everything he has been through in life, while still remaining so positive. He is indeed an excellent teacher and life mentor.I learned so much from his class that I wish I was a Philosophy Major. He is not hard, I got an A & lectures rocked
This guy knows what hes talking about and hes so sweet. I ended up with an A. In the beginnning he may seem hard but at the end you will do better than you think.
Worst philosophy teacher ever! Philosophy is supposed to be about exploring different perspectives and civil discourse. In his class we were exposed to nothing but conservative califanoism. If you disagree he will instantly proclaim that you don't understand.
He know what he's his material very well. He's very interesting, this class is not like the boring phil 1000. He has a strong stand on stem cell research so be careful not to say anything with proof. Other than that he's very interesting and FUN. This class is worth it, it teaches you some MORALS.
Seems organized but fell out of place at times, giving assignments out of the blue. Midterm, Final is right out of his powerpoint, does not post so have to copy. It's an easy class, just do the assignments and hand in on time. He got to txbook in the end of semester so i did not even buy it. Do not raise a point unless you are very strong about it!
it seems very hard at first, but very easy class. take him, easier than other professors. stay with his point and write whatever it's in his powerpoint on the midterm and finals
Worst professor I have ever had. Gave me a B+ for writing an excellent paper on a topic he simply does not agree with- Gay marriage. He uses himself as a source to make outrageous claims- ie He knew the levees of New Orleans would break in 1971. Frustrating. Youll thank me when you dont take him.
Easy class, but dont expect to have any free intellectual discourse. He is stubborn in his thinking, and is ultra, ultra conservative.i.e.He said that condoms don't prevents aids, that the theory of evolution is crap- creationism "clearly" overrides it, roe v. wade dealt with the issue of "whether life is important"..Nice man, terrible professor.
Califano is set in his thinking, he does make some outrageous claims, and talks about his son alot, but tune him out for that part. Midterm is 40%, Final 45%, and coming into class, random quiz and short paper for final 15%. He is a very smart man, and he does raise important points that made me think. WRITE NOTES DOWN, WILL HELP FOR FINAL!
He is not mean and obnoxious, but he is too dogmatic and arbitrary. When a professor says evolution is just an OPINION, not a theory, we have problems. My high GPA friend submitted his paper and got a B+ and his friend who simply cut down parts of his paper and got an A. Class is very boring every day, but he gives out B+ or above, so go for him.
Califano is a decent guy not too bad of a teacher, cancelled a lot of classes, one time he got stuck in the school parking lot LOL, midterm, final and a couple of short essays. Sometimes the way he talks in class, gets to be a bit annoying, ad we started using the txtbook at end of semester do dont bother buying it. Pay attention and guaranteed A!!
Nice guy.....listen to him says some important things .....yes its the only opinion he has n hes stingy on it, but thats just becoz hes spent his life discovering it n try to make our lives easier by telling us.....do the work...put some time into it....A!!! take homes
easiest A you can get...just do the essays and pay attention ... guy barely comes to class !
easy A..he likes shorter papers better and straight to the point...he cancells class a lot..overall just put in the effort and u will get a good grade
really! easy A.. just midterm and final (couple essays which were part of the final)... he says hes gna give out pop quizzes but never did... cancelled a lot!! sometimes even leaves class early or comes 30 min late (it's like a 55 min class!).. just copy down his powerpoint notes and midterm and final are both take home!
Really sweet man, tells a lot of stories to help relate class material to real-time events. Sometimes goes off-topic, but keeps the class interesting. Provides all his own notes and texts, so books aren't necessary. I'd recommend taking him - just be prepared to pay attention and do a bit of reading!
ok... basically this guy talks ALOT of BS about his family being that awesome, and how his marriage is the best in the world. Everything he says... put it down on paper and use it in the midterm and final. you'll hear a lot of the same bs over and over again. I expected an A from him but in the end, gave me B+.
What an informed teacher! Take down notes and learn from a proffesor of yesteryear. we will never be able to replace these great Teachers that were acquired in the late sixties at SJU - Enjoy him before he retires!
Majority of the time he goes of topic, yet relates everything back to ethics somehow. I got an A in the course by doing what was asked and using his handouts and notes, and pretty much do what you can for the rest I had no textbook so that was a plus. Take home midterm and final :-)
Dont take him... run the other way. He is not fair at all...his tests are way too hard and almost impossible. He ruined my 4.0 gpa
Hes hard...if u want to learn take him...if u want an A stay away from him!!!
He is difficult and will put you through torture but at the end of the semester if you did do what was required you will get an A.
I cam in thinking the class would be very easy. Not so much so. His tests aren't bad, but he grades his papers very harshly. DO NOT Plagiarize he caught four students in my class last semester. Guaranteed a B, but you will really have to work for an A
has the most interesting lectures! no hw or papers, a few short quizes!...just make sure to take good notes...highly recommend, idk what all of these other students are talking about!
Seriously, Califano is really awesome. He decided to start a new system of just giving small quizzes every week (there was only 2 so far -_-) and now we have a take home test, which counts more than all the quizzes combined. He took attendance for about the first three weeks and then stopped. Do your work, pay attention - you'll do fine.
Take him. You will learn. He provides very strong and very logical arguments in ethics. He really utilizes his knowledge and experience. This is an interesting class. I got an A. It seems pretty easy when taking organic chem at St John's.
gave 2 quizzes with 2 short essay questions each. answers straight from the notes. pay attention, attendance not necessary 100% (simply get all his notes). memorization is key. easy A.
self centered, likes to tell stories about himself being a hero and loves to brag about his family. needs to start teaching and stop recounting personnal anecdotes because nobody cares that he has 20 kids and trained his dog how to talk
Painfully boring class... I know more about his family than ethics. Quizzes, midterm, and final -- all written. If you don't put his exact words you lose points. No matter how perfect your answer is he'll give you a 9/10. Pushes his opinions onto you; very old and set in his ways
Horrible professor
Older man who forces you to have his views on ethical issues. E.g. He refers to Pro-choice advocates as Pro-Death, and informed the class that if we don't say pro-death then we are going to be marked wrong. Quizzes, midterm & final. All written. All very challenging unless you get the questions ahead of time, and even then, you might only get a 8/10
