This was my most dreaded class. It seemed cool at first, however, after a few weeks, the class got incredibly boring and VERY AWKWARD. He asks questions and waits 5 minutes for someone to answer, but no one does. Also, his grading policy allows only a certain amount of people to receive A's, no matter how many people deserve an A.
Class seemed good at first. But then it got weird. Lots of readings and class discussions. He will ask a question, then wait for someone to answer and when no one does, he makes it awkward. Unfair grading scale. Only give out a few A's. Not my best english experience
Such a terrible class! What we have to read before each class is completely uninteresting, and very random. In class we "discuss" the readings, but hardly anyone in the class participates. Extremely boring. Grades unfairly. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
He seems like a cool guy at first, but then you realize he's just boring and awkward. He thinks he's helping but really the students just don't respect him much because he makes no sense. His grading is ridiculous and he will give you a grade based on other peoples' papers. Sometimes he can be a real jerk. Take another section for this Gen Ed!
A complete waste of time. He walks in everyday as if he's God and whispers some incoherent trash to the class about his obviously boring life. There are about four or five useless and random books that are required for reading that make no sense whatsoever. He has short man syndrome and grades papers very unfairly... DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
very annoying and hops around the class like a hobbit. lol the awkward pauses throughout the 50 mins of class are beyond torture! save your moolah. he's creepy, stares at you waaaaaaay too much (especially if you're cute) and looks like the science guy from 'honey i shrunk the kids'
Very hard to get an A on the papers for no reason- everyone gets a B. Will wait for someone to answer a question until it's way beyond awkward. Not the best class.
I don't know why everyone is complaining. This class was really easy. Yeah he kinna goes on tangents but the work load is very minimal. I never read but got a good grade. His paper grading is wack but he gives credit for easy stuff so it evens out. Plus I thought he was funny. I would say take his class.
The class isn't horrible, but he does pause a lot waiting for students to respond. He makes this crazy scrunchy face when hes talking and has a kind of creepy laugh sometimes. The readings are mandatory but no one does them and you can bs the questions he asks. If you are one of the people who talks in the class, its not that bad.
I really enjoyed the paper topics chosen in this class. It's pretty broad so you get to pick what you want. The readings are okay and it does get a little awkward discussing them. He's a nice guy, but mumbles a lot. If you're the person who talks all the time, then you will be fine. Attendance is mandatory.
The class was cool at first because it seemed like an easy grade but then it turned around and got extremely boring and i dreaded it every day! He asks really awkward questions that no one answers and i think he's obsessed with Lucifer!!!! DO NOT TAKE!!!!
I LOVED this class. You only had 4 essays the whole semester & the final was a self evaluation. The rest of the work was reading very interesting short creative nonfiction. Classes were all discussion and a lot of fun. Prof. Capista is funny, nice and always willing to help. I dont get why people are so harsh on him? TAKE THIS CLASS!
He is very arrogant and does not "believe" in giving A's this class ruined my GPA, because of it grades papers based on who's opinion he agrees with DO NOT TAKE HIM if you you are looking for an easy A or just want to get a decent grade for ENGL 102. I am serious do not take him take someone else.
Horrible professor! He grades papers by comparing everyones essay in the class. The essay topics are boring and unclear. He gives 4-5 essays which are your only grades so it is extremely hard to do well
Incredibly nice, fun guy. Very friendly, very involved in his work; knowledgeable. Four essays total; all very short. He's serious about his class but not to the point of arrogance. If you're willing to put even a marginal amount of work into his class you'll love it.
The class I took was Literary Essay; very enjoyable. He was fun and encouraged us to have fun and gave good prompts for the four papers. Sharp dresser, too.
This class is ridiculous and it will ruin your GPA. He grades unfairly and will only give out an A if your essay is written professionally and with NO MISTAKES. I highly advise you to switch professors before the class starts because you will immediately regret your decision to stay in his class.
Prof Capista is a really nice guy but his class is really hard. The in class assignments are discussing little 2 page essays you are to read the night before. But the papers he assigns are ridiculous. He assigns the hardest essay topics and is not lenient what so ever grade wise. Getting an A is kind of impossible
I took him for "Writing Poetry" which is a relatively easy course with little structured grading. He encourages discussion and does his best to introduce poetry to students in a short amount of time. Though he can be a little pretentious (never watches tv and brags about it all the time) he is a very nice man and wants you to succeed.
His class isn't very boring I didn't mind going, however he is a tough grader and you will almost constantly have an essay to write. there are 4 or 5 essays total, there are some readings, but you dont HAVE TO do those
He is a good guy overall, he makes hilarious faces but his grading is very hard. He makes it clear what he wants and is willing to discuss any problems you come across writing. He just expects so much out of your writing. Hard teacher, nice guy.
I took him for english 102 and he is a good teacher. He is a "hard grader" but he gives you all the tools you need to write good papers, so that isn't a problem. His critiques are helpful and the articles we read are interesting. I found the people who didn't like his class were the people who never bothered to put some time into the class.
Professor Capista is very helpful, and he wants you to succeed. He always emphasizes the positive aspects of your work, which makes it a lot easier to do your work. He uses both textbooks all the time, and most classes we just discuss the readings. He is sometimes hard to understand because he speaks in a very low, grovely voice.
My first semester at Towson I turned in a paper that did not meet the siting requirements of the university. Prof Capista following the rules of the university decided to give me an F for the semester rather than an F on the assignment or to redo the assignment. There are a lot of good teachers in the English department, but he is not one of them.
Very nice guy! Attendance is mandatory! Very hard to get an A on individual essays and I spent a lot of time on each of the four essays. If you are a good writer, then the class might be a little easier for you since there are only 4 essays and no tests. I enjoyed the class to some extent. He tries to make it enjoyable. A lot of class discussion.
He's a great professor!! I took him as a freshman & really benefited from his class. He takes the time to explain the material and wants to know you're also making an effort. 4 essays which were easy. Uses peer review. Felt like an AP eng. class. :)
class seems interesting at first and he seems like a really cool guy, but his grading policy is ridiculous. He is a VERY hard grader and barely anyone gets an A. I have been in AP english all of high school and received C's on all essays. if your essay does not match his opinion he will not agree with it. Do NOT recommend taking this class!
Please do not take this professor. You don't learn anything about writing. He tells you about the 4 essays. gives peer reviews for only 2 of them and doesn't give you his own feedback. Only gives a certain number of As.
The essays aren't difficult, and there are 4 assigned. He is an extremely hard grader. Hardly gives out any As. Do not take this class. He told me once that I had an A quality paper, but I didn't change anything about my draft for the final, so he gave me a B. DO NOT take this professor.
Loved this class! I retook it with this professor and I'm really glad I did. He has a great understanding of poetry and how to make your poem better than it was before. Small and relaxed class taken over the summer and fit my schedule perfectly. Show up, do the work, you'll be fine. And don't take him for essay writing, apparently.
I mean if a B or a C is fine with you then you can take this teacher. He doesn't give A's y'all.
He's a nice guy, and good teacher. I learned a lot from him. Only problem is that he is an extremely hard grader. Don't expect better than a C+.
Do not take this professor. Do not miss the peer review class day because he will yell at you for it. He is a very tough grader. His assignments will seem pretty simple and easy but I've never seen him give anyone an A.
Do not take this professor. He is not easy and he does not care about any of his students. He takes his easy way out to just fail a student. The worst teacher I've ever had and ruined my college year experience.
Hard grader. Doesn't really care about students. I would never recommend this teacher to anyone.
I had Capista for Writing Poetry and I loved the class. There's a weekly poem assignments that are generally easy and the entire course is discussion based.
There are four papers that make up your grade; he does little homework questions/quizzes sometimes that are supposedly added to the grade. He is a very tough grader (wants all your essays to be like the ones in the text book). However, he's a really nice guy and I enjoyed being in his class.
TERRIBLE teacher. This could have been a great class. Class time was enjoyable for the most part, despite a complete lack of organization and timeliness on the professors part. Capista is an unfair grader. He boosts his own self esteem by putting other's down. My class was full of excellent writers- yet we all ended up with terrible grades.
I had him freshman year. The class was difficult, but his comments are always helpful. If you work hard and ask for help when you need it, I don't see why you wouldn't succeed. He expects a lot from his students. Perspective English majors should take his class if possible. Good prep.
I have Capista for English 102 and he's just not good. He's an extremely tough grader, he's very picky and is also very hard to work with. My printer was broken and I emailed him one of my assignments and refused to grade it because I didn't turn it in during class. He's not worth taking a class with. I can't stand him.
Expect a discussion based class. He usually assigns two very short stories to read before the next class. Class is then spent discussing the information in the stories. He usually cracks jokes to make class more interesting and they are actually funny. He is a tough grade but he did give out several A's on each essay. Tough class but not horrible.
Do not take this class if you aren't serious about poetry. He's a tough grader, but if you make it through you will be a much better writer. Half my class dropped out. That being said, This is the best class I've taken in college.
I adored this class and it helped me improve my poetry a great deal. Capista is enthusiastic about his subject and is willing to help those who ask for it. However, do not take this class if you have little or no interest in poetry. I worked 4+ hours outside of class per week and he is an extremely tough grader.
I took him my freshman year and I personally was really scared I wouldn't do well. I'm not the best essay writer but it's a do-able class. The work load isn't too tough, and he usually gives you a good outline of what he's expecting in a paper.
Christ almighty, he's an intense guy. He had a manifesto in the syllabus! You miss a single class and you're pretty much doomed. He will actually ask you to withdraw from the class, excused or not. The peer review sessions are torture. If you didn't hate poetry going in, you'll definitely hate it going out.
He is a really tough grader. Unless you are an amazing writer than he will not get an A on any of his papers. There is not a lot of work in the class so you have to do well on essay's to pass.
Expect to read a lot and use all possible resources to better your paper. He will not give perfect scores unless your papers are perfect.
Your grade is made up of four essays and some small homework assignments graded for participation. Class is spent going over material that will help you write your essays. He is very straight forward in what he looks for in your essays, practically giving you an outline. For the final, you turn in your graded essays and answer questions on them.
It would be nearly impossible to receive an A in an essay in this class. It would be very rare to get a B. There is a lot of reading, but one thing I would admit is that his lectures and class discussions aren't the worst thing ever. Capista is extremely hard to impress. Change your name to George Orwell or Stephen King maybe he'll give you an A.
Great teacher. He is smart, funny, and adorable. Hard grader, but knows what the hell he is doing. Take his class.
Very hard grader. Hated his class. Don't take please. Only thing your grade consisted of were 4 essays.. the final is worth 5% of ur grade lmao. Take at your own risk.
Prof Capista seems to be very knowledgeable when it comes to poetry. He communicates the material extremely well and gets all of the students involved in the process of creating poems and revising them. If you go to his office hours, he can be a great help individually as well.
He was awful. Very condescending and rude . Tries to make jokes in classes and is an extremely tough grader. You can do everything required on the rubric and still manage to get a low paper grade. For basically all my papers I got C's. DO NOT TAKE HIM if you care about maintaining a good GPA.
Good professor and very knowledgable. Knows English very well and doesn't try too hard to make it flowery and rhetorical. Likes the literal definitions of the texts. Tough grader, hard to get A's. Small class sizes, so attendance is mandatory.
Don't take this course to "fill a requirement". Poetry isn't easy, and if you don't have a passion for it, you won't succeed. If you love poetry, then this class is for you! You'll learn a lot about the form and content of poetry. You'll come out of this class a much better writer than before. Attendance is mandatory!
Amazing professor. All essays were opinionated so it was somewhat easy. The essay word count might be intimidating but after the first two, it'll be a breeze. English is my weakness but I ended up with a B. Don't type essays last minute or you're going to stay up really late typing unnecessary bs. He's overall a great professor
Writing poetry is a lot more difficult than I thought. After learning the terminology and having to apply it to your work, its not as fun as I expected it to be. If youre not into poetry, then this class is NOT for you, because you will have many assignments to complete, and he is a tough grader! The exams are difficult!
I love poetry & this class was definitely not what I expected. I learned so much. There are poems due almost every week (which are very fun) & the exams are a little difficult but you just HAVE to study. The class was more discussion based so we all got to know each other very well. He gave us a handful of days off from class too. So worth it!!!
Overall hes a good professor. You have four essays to do which are somewhat easy because he guidelines you on how to do them between the deadline. Also, there are short articles to read before coming to class which are basically references on how to do them. Hes a bit of a tough grader but fortunately there is no final. Just be serious.
Gives you a few classes off to focus on essays and helps you edit them. One of the best professors I have had, especially helped since I am not a big fan of English.
This is BY FAR, the WORST class, Ive EVER TAKEN IN MY ENTIRE life! Take that last sentence with the knowledge in mind that I am a senior with over twenty classes completed. Shows you examples of his own essays which all sound like they were written by a fifth grader. Dude will make you feel like a genius until he gives you an D on a perfect essay!
Prof. Capista is probably one of my favorite professors. The class itself was so intriguing and if you want to learn about poetry, this is the guy you want to learn form. If you don't study, you definitely won't pass, but the assignments are really fun. DONT take this if you don't love poetry.
His class is very confusing because he cancels many of the classes but still has assignments due making it hard to understand them on your own without his explanation of the requirements.
By far the worst professor I've ever had! Attendance is mandatory, so don't skip! Be ready to follow strict guidelines for writing poetry. Don't take this class if you don't love poetry because he'll make you hate it! 0/10 recommend...
I loved having class with Professor Capista. If you love poetry, or the creative writing process in general, I highly recommend! It is really important to read the assigned poems. The sole thing I didnt like was that we were made to memorize the title and poets of all the in-class poems for the exams, which I felt was unnecessary and tedious.
I took his class online. We did not have synchronous meetings (imo it was probably better that way). Overall, he's a fair grader and gives great feedback on coursework. WARNING: we did have a final essay for the online format. It's basically a mini research paper. I would've had an A in his class but I got a B- on the final paper.
One of my favorite professors I have had. Gives absolutely the BEST feedback on assignments I have ever seen, which for a poetry class makes revisions very much easier. Any meetings are optional and very conversational but worth going to. Video lectures are productive and insightful. I took this class for a core requirement and have loved the class
I took this class to fill one of my cores and it was pretty easy. It was asynchronous and we had a paper/journal entry due every Sunday, with three essays throughout the semester. He is a strict grader and only grades things on a 4 point scale, so it was really hard to get a perfect 4/4. Other than that, it was relatively easy.
Dropped this guys class after the first day. His syllabus was completely unorganized and started with the word Manifesto. More poetry analyzation than poetry writing. Doesnt allow or excuse absences unless you are in the hospital. Extremely condescending, too. Choose another professor for this class.
He is such an influential teacher. Definitely recommend him for a laidback class that is fun and rewarding.
I recommend taking him for any freshman needing an English credit. Amazing professor, wants to see you succeed, and helps you along the way. Class is very laid back & at a steady rate. 4 major essays worth the majority of your grade, but if you try hard you'll do great. Opportunities for feedback and revisions from peers and himself that help 100%.
do not take this class. he only uses like two grades for your entire grade and it's not even poems you write being graded. this class is supposed to be about writing but it's all about memorizing other people's poems and it's a waste of your time. the midterm and final are complete bs and he is not accommodating with bumping grades or help.
Not a lot of work besides essays which is good and bad. If you do bad on a essay it's hard to come back from it. Nice guy.
I struggled a lot early on, but he was very willing to work with me and give me accommodations as needed. As long as you show genuine effort and communicate, you will succeed in his course. Very kind and easy to approach
Easy class overall as long as you do the assignments. There are only two tests, the midterm and final, and they're both VERY difficult. Impossible to reach outside of class, does not answer emails, and doesn't allow for excused absences.
HE IS RUDE AND DISRESPECTFUL TAKE IT FROM DROP THIS!!!!! WORSE CLASS IVE EVER TAKEN MIND UP I HAVE PHD!
Unnecessarily strict on attendance. The weekly assignments were, imo, really fun and the assigned readings were really good. The bulk of your grade is the mid-term and final which are 90% based on memorization and regurgitation. Also, I never got any feedback from him beyond "pretty good, expand on (insert concept of the week)"
Show up on time to class and stay the full length. He is strict on attendance but overall a good professor, and is willing to work with you over difficulties. HAVE A STAPLER, he will not accept unstapled documents.
Passionate professor who is clearly interested in what he was teaching. Very uncaring professor for students slipping out of passing. Was barely present, 1/3 of classes didn't take place. Way too rigid and demanding for a 102-required freshman course.
As a student who got an A in the class, all I'll say is-- be ready to work. His class is 2.5 hours long, which is almost unbearable, and almost the entire thing is lectures. You're graded on the midterm, the final, your poetry portfolio, and discussion boards. The exams are very tough and entirely memory based. He does not give any leeway.
I love Capista. He's strict w attendance, but I'm not sure why someone wouldn't show up when half the time you don't have class bc of peer revisions. He's so caring, genuine, and just a great person to have a conversation with. He is a bit of a tough grader, but his class is engaging and the readings are supper interesting. I would 100% take again.
this class was alright, we had to get only two books for the entirety of the course. the essays were decently easy, but he would pile one after the other, barely giving us time to finish the other. majority of the time, you're not even in class because of peer review days, which was really nice to get to focus on finishing it up.
Only 4 grades for the class, the midterm, final, and 2 portfolios of your work. Weekly assignments are graded for completion and do not affect grade. Easy to reach through email. The tests are extremely hard. It is all based on memorization of poem titles and their authors (like 30 poems you have to memorize). DO NOT TAKE. Was not an easy A.
He is an ok teacher. He has more assignments for the class, so it all equals out but his feedback is somewhat unclear. A lot of the assignments are subjective but the rubric is confusing!
He seemed super strict at first, but now it's clear he wants you to take it seriously. He is very knowledgeable about poetry (as he should be), but he doesn't expect you to be a master. He has a great sense of humor once the class settles in and gets comfortable. Attend class, do the readings and assignments, and you'll be fine!
He assigns reading and even if you don't read it will be talked about during class so you will be fine. He doesn't play about assignments if it's not done it's a 0, especially with giving your group their papers to read. Easy class if you follow instructions and do work on time. Attendance is needed or you will fail.
I needed 311 for a core requirement, and I didn't do any research on his class before enrolling. You'll write a new poem every week, but they are not included in your grade. You're graded on your midterm, final, and portfolios. He's strict on attendance; don't take him if you like to skip class. He's a nice guy, but his class stressed me out.
The class isn't graded on much, and the midterm was memorizing poems and their authors, something he didn't mention ahead of time. He did say the final will be the same. That part makes it unnecessarily hard, so I'd recommend taking someone else. It's nice that he doesn't expect you to be an expert on poetry, but the exams ruin the experience.
take someone else
Not a GPA booster, but not terrible. None of our poems were graded, only within the mini and final portfolios. The midterm and final were difficult, memorizing poets and titles didn't help me appreciate poetry, disappointing. He's nice, but the beauty of poetry wasn't really explored in this class for me.
Professor Capista was amazing for my summer course, he was always available whenever anyone had questions. We had to write many poems, flash fictions, and other writing styles. It was a new experience but his lectures and guidelines/expectations made writing easier. His feedback to each assignment also allowed you to improve each assignment.
I loved Professor Capista--he can be a little intimidating at times, but he'll often crack jokes during class. The class only meets once a week, but some of those weeks you don't have to go in person. Each week you'll write a new poem for a total of 9 to 11, and there is a midterm and final that you must memorize poems and their authors.
Very quirky guy, but was very great. His instructions were easy to understand and gave a lot of good feedback. We also barley had class since most times were peer reviews. Make sure you participate because he likes that. Would take again.
Professor Capista was amazing! We never had any homework, just essays to work on outside of class, and peer review workshops to attend after writing our essays. Most classes got out very early, and a lot of them you weren't required to go to, because of peer review, and drafting days.
