Really nice guy, but not a great teacher. He doesn't tell you what's going to be on the exam because he doesn't want to "hold your hand" which he says over and over. Doesn't give study guide, no practice problems, just teaches a bunch of nonsense and then tests you on something else totally different. Very hard to get an A if u'r not psychic/genius
Professor Carolan will take the extra time to explain concepts to his students. Still, his lectures and rants are hard to understand. Professor Carolan has a lot of potential, but as of now, he seems to make easy econ concepts hard. Expect challenging projects and exams that you will not be prepared for.
Not a class for people who can't teach themselves. He tries to lecture but nothing sticks and he is boring. One page papers due every week that are easy, 4 homework assignments that are alright, but the midterms are are kind of hard. Again, if you expect him to teach you anything it will not be good for you.
I'm typing this as I'm studying for my final which is at 8 am... it's 3:14 am. So, so, so happy I'm almost done with this class. His lectures will put you to sleep, and his handwriting is so gosh darn messy you can't read it. His midterms are hard, one-pagers due every week are annoying, and he doesn't curve anything. Be prepared to teach yourself.
First off, took this class as a GEN ED. Expected to have a break from the EGR courses. This class ended up taking up just as much time. His lectures are dull, exams are difficult, and decided to throw us a curve ball on the 3rd exam which was the same day as the final. A smart professor who has expectations above what students give to a gen ed
Everyone failed his tests, average for class was less than 50%. He had to curve tests just so some people could pass. And anytime someone in class argued with him regarding grades or the subject. He would act unprofessional to the student. He did not admit his mistakes. Worst educator I have had.
Class was very hard. The info he taught was very advanced. This was supposed to be a starter class. In my opinion, if you want get a good grade you will need to study every single day. Everything I learned could not be applied to the real world.
Prof. Carolan is by far one of the toughest professors I've ever had. With that said, he's always willing to help out and does huge curves. If you study and are proactive, his classes should not be a problem. Overall, I really like him as a teacher and I would take him again.
Exams are challenging and he's a hard grader. But he teaches well and is always willing to answer questions. He has high expectations and expects students to take the initiative to do everything. There are no practice exams/problems. There is a huge curve built into the class, so it's very possible to pass.
Prof Carolan was tough but fair. He is a nice guy, however his lectures were sometimes confusing but he always take questions and was willing to clarify. The homework was easy however the tests were long. Economics can be a hard subject so you do have to study outside of class. 202 was easier.
Very hard teacher. Messy handwriting. Hard tests. Yet he's willing to help you!
Tests are based off of readings, not lectures. Gets off topic easily and makes lecture confusing. Gives third prelim exam and final exam on the same day.
He is by far one of the worst teachers I've ever had. The final was the only test but there's a group project that turns into a huge paper at the end. His handwriting is horrible and the lectures are extremely confusing. The quizzes are based off of the readings and not the lectures, so the book is a must. I definitely regret taking this class.
Work load is fairly hard, there's no clear cut instructions on what he's looking for. BUT, if you explain your thought process behind everything he's a very chillax person. I loved his lectures but im passionate about business. He is VERY knowledgeable in his field.
This class was THE HARDEST class i've taken at OU so far. The class is poorly structured with 1 exam, a few papers, one large group project, and multiple online quizzes. You never use the book.. only for the quizzes. He knows his stuff; but you basically end up having to teach yourself.
I really enjoyed this class. I didn't really use the book, but I paid attention and took notes & participated in class. I integrated the weekly papers into my day-to-day life by keeping what we had learned in lecture on my mind. If I couldn't remember what something was, I just Google'd it. I would like to have Professor Carolan in another class.
This was a very tough class but if you work for it you will pass. Dr. Carolan is a cool guy but will not pass you if you dont apply yourself. I worked very hard in this class and recieved a 2.2. Although the class is tough i did learn quite a bit. Weekly assignments are east and 15 of your grade so make sure to do all of them. The tests are hard.
Ent 201 with Dr. Carolan was pretty simple. Weekly assignments are important often 2-3 page papers. 2 tests are very fair and are graded on a curve. Show up and participate in class and you will pass. I leaned quite a bit from Dr. Carolan he is very smart and uses real life examples. Dont waste money on the book you dont need it
Let me save you all the trouble of taking this professor. Let me start by saying he's a nice guy who is very passionate on the subject. With that said he is the most biased, unclear brick headed professor i have ever had. zero instructions on all the papers given, 1 final exam at the end that is all essays. This class will destroy your confidence
There were weekly papers due, no homework assignments other than that. The tests were challenging but reviews whatever you want the class before, so helpful! If you're going in as a freshman, like I did, you might be surprised how abrasive. However he was a good teacher on the subject and the class is easy if you have common sense about economics.
Good in that he applies economics to the real world.
I like economics and the class material, but you could not pay me enough to take a class with him again. His assignments were unclear, he did not respect students very much, and he made the class much harder than it needed to be.
Don't take with him at all. He doesn't car about students and tries to sort of ignore you or look down upon you and he alsways expects you to teach yourself. He is also not clear as he is a tough grader as well. Passing could be possible, but even though, you wouldn't get a better grade than a D or C if you had no time to study for it every day.
WOW, Listen guys, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH CAROLAN. from the first class to the last class, i did not understand a thing.. He does a terrible job of TEACHING! average exam grade was in the low 40s and the final was about the same.. he does curve which is the only reason i passed.
He is not clear and always expects you to know every little thing, so never take him or be ready to study every single day to obtain a B-. H never curves tests so the chance of passing seems to be nearly impossible. He never gives good feedback on your tests and looks down upon you occasionally.
This was my favorite professor I've had at Oakland so far. The lectures are amazing, as he really knows what he is talking about and can relate it to real life. He's one of a few econ teachers that doesn't rely on powerpoints for each lecture. If you expect weekly one page papers and read before class you should do fine in ECN 150.
If you want to learn Economics as it applies to the real world and current events then take it. Being in class is everything, the book is just a skeleton. He gives plenty of opportunity for extra credit from optional quizzes to weekly papers, but you have to put in work. He's a great teacher if you ask the right questions. Office Hours are key!!!
I had Dr. Carolan in my first college semester, and he is by far the best one I had. He's very knowledgeable in economics and relates class concepts to experiences he's had. Very interesting to listen to. I think that studying is essential... Fortunately he goes over whatever you want the day before tests. Very tough class, but he's a great prof.
WOW all i have to say is do NOT take this teacher. Listen to me and save your time, money, and GPA. I have a 3.9 GPA and have been taught under many different teaching styles. This teacher sucks. Plain and simple. He does not care about you, or how well you understand the material. He wont even lecture. Read the book or fail.
It takes a little bit to get used to his grating tone and general personality, but this guy is no-nonsense and an excellent professor. He applies concepts to events that are occurring in real life and if you participate, you will certainly learn a lot. He is demanding but if you put in the work and try to grasp the material, he is more than fair.
He just does not know how to teach. He's the toughest grader and his tests are extremely hard. He is soooo messy when it comes to writing on the board and he gives out multiple chapters a week with multiple quizzes, online and in class. I cant understand anything and I have studied so hard for this class. Not worth it
Had no idea a professor this terrible could still have his job. Every single in class quiz is curved because everyone does so bad and most, if not all, students are confused as to what the assigned homework talks about and just turn random stuff in. Avoid him at all costs, he is the worse, and should be unemployed. Perfect class if you like crying.
I've never had a professor where I've attended every class and still feel like I learned nothing. If you want to succeed, you have to teach yourself even though he tests on things not in the book as well. There's only one real exam which is the final, with weekly 40 minute quizzes which are quite hard and are always curved due to low scores.
I had Professor Carolan for ECN 202 and learned so much from him. I actually enjoyed going to class because he would use current events and not rely on powerpoints. Extremely smart guy and the whole class revolves around online quizzes, a couple long papers, and a final. Yes he is tough, but go to class, do your work, and you'll be fine.
He's extremely knowledgeable and willing to answer questons IF you ask. You need to pay attention to lectures and read the material before class. Start on the papers early otherwise risk insanity trying to do it last minute. His handwriting started poor but improved by the end of the semester. He's funny and relates content to real world issues.
I have not met a more egotistical professor in my life. He lectures literally any material in world minus the material he places on the test. For one of his exams he said a few days prior "I know we haven't looked over many graphs but one or two may be on the exam" OVER 60% of the exam questions were graphs. Absolutely horrible. Blames students
I knew from the very first class that he was going to suck. I met with him and asked for extra help and got none. Got a 4.0 in micro and 3.7 in macro but I failed his course. If you're an Econ major you probably will learn a lot but for someone who has no interest and finds Econ pretty tough, he didn't help whatsoever.
I knew that this course would be difficult for me, no interest. I have done very well in other subjects I have no interest in, or have to work extra hard to do well in. Although, this professor is passionate about the subject he cannot effectively present it. He is very scattered and unorganized, this made it impossible to understand the subject.
Intimidating at first, but once I got used to his teaching style, it wasn't so bad. Take him if you are self-motivated, and descent with QMM 240. He worked with the class to see how we wanted our class structured - he liked to discuss material vs. "monkey see monkey do". Helpful in office hours. Get to know him - it will help! Lenient and adapts.
Most of my learning for this class was by reading the book but lectures were extremely helpful. He likes to discuss we what we learn and gives us good real world examples. If you read the book, attend lectures, and do his extra credit prequizes (which help boost test scores) you will pass.
I took Professor Carolan for ECN202 and then again for QMM241. He's one of my favorites at OU because his teaching style is so different from other professors. His lectures are not the usual powerpoints and book examples but rather real life applications. He's very lenient with class structure and wants the students to participate.
Okay listen. Dr. Carolan is hard, but he really cares. He is really passionate about statistics - and gives great feedback. Actually care about his class, attend class, ask questions, and he'll reward you with lenient assignment grades and maybe even a take home final exam!
DR Carolan is a great professor for ecn but he will never teach you or give you an idea how the test would be. Not saying that others do but he's first two exams in my class, I'll say 65% of the students didn't get a 2.0. For someone that is learning ecn the first time or never took ecn in the pass don't take him.
only reason why I wanted to go to class was because he was hilarious.
Tells you the first day of class the majority of his class fails, almost like he's proud of it. Lectures are really confusing and hard to follow and doesn't go from the book but what's in his head. His notes on the board are unorganized and hard to understand and read. Class average tests score where failing on every test, but he curves them.
All homework is done through online system. No exams except the final, which for my class was take home with the ability to do it as a group. A few projects which the grading is not clear. You will not learn from his lectures as they have nothing to do with the material. Final took my group of 7 people almost 9 hours to complete. Grading is unclear
I learned better by studying the book rather then listening to his lectures. He's very knowledgeable and makes class amusing, but he's not great at teaching. He gets way to into the details and doesn't spend enough time on the math and the equations. He talks about "why" the economy works and not enough about "how" to do what is needed for tests.
Confusing lectures, hard to read/follow notes, all points are from online quizzes that don't match the lecture or the book reading. Lectures don't match the book. Final exam is a choice. He's said himself that he's scatter-brained and it shows. He knows his stuff, but cannot bring his knowledge down to a 1500 level in a coherent way.
Dr. Carolan gets a bad rep, but in all honesty, he has made me actually understand economics. His course isn't homework or test heavy, but he does expect you to pay attention. He's a pretty decent guy and a good professor. The big things in his class are a midterm paper and a group project/paper at the end that you work on the whole time.
by far the worst professor I've had in college so far. He doesn't care about his students at all. The material learned in class looks like random numbers and graphs while quizzes done online are on concepts that are never talked about. Two huge papers. One individual (25 pages) and one group (50-60 pages). The final is pretty much an impromptu.
He will assume that you have mastered the material before coming to class. Lectures are mainly diagrams & seemingly random series of letters & numbers w/ very vague explanation. Questions are met with vague and often sarcastic answers. Exams are 90% deciphering diagrams w/ little to no context. Book material is much lower level than class material.
He assumes you know everything there is to know about economics. Lectures make no sense at all. You can't even read half of the things he writes on the board because of how messy it is. Get's side-tracked A LOT. Everyone fails his test. The class average is usually around 50% for each test, but he curves them.
Professor Carolan is very knowledgeable in his subject. The class is difficult , but not hard if you try. Actually read the chapter and take notes!! The book is very good at explaining concepts.
I took Economic 1500 with Professor Carolan. He's very fun. His class is very difficult and hard to grasp, but you learn a lot. There is a lot of homework that you need to do in order to understand the class and get a good grade. While the homework will not be worth it for most people, I learned more in this class than any other class I've taken.
Only 3 exams throughout the semester, all quite difficult. Majority of your grade is made up of these tests with NO reviews at all. Hw is given to boost your grade so is the extra credit quizzes given online. Tests consist of graphs with no explanation beforehand. Attendance not mandatory so theirs that.
This class was VERY. TOUGH. I spent hours each week doing the online HW and quizzes. He really didn't teach but cares a lot about real life applications. The final took me 16 hours to do. With hard work I managed to get a B, but this is not a class that you can come into and slack off in. Do all the homework and read the book, or take another prof!
Why does he have such negative reviews? I just took ECN 3030 with him and he was the nicest. He extended two assignments for me because i forgot, was so passionate about what he taught. He actually made ECN enjoyable, I'm so glad I had him as my professor. (Don't look at the negative reviews, these people probably never even went to class).
Lots of homework including online assignments, worksheets, and quizzes. Lots of graphs and diagrams on the homework. Has you read the book at home and when you get to class he barely talks about what was in the chapter while trying to "connect it to the real world."
Dr. Carolan's class was truly focused on student success. Sure, there was homework and quizzes, but with his final exam policy you did not have to do any of it if you chose not to. The final is not mandatory, and is only in place to help students grades. Overall, I had a great experience and I would definitely take his class again.
I think Professor Carolan was awesome. Homework and reading is done online through mindtap and honestly as long as you keep up with those you are golden. Final was on Moodle and was easy if you actually did your homework. He's a great professor and if you put time in this class you'll get a good grade easily.
Talked about two papers, a 25 page one and a 60 page one. That was enough for me to drop his class. Very arrogant and insecure, a little man tbh
I took him for ECN2010 and although attendance is non-mandatory, his lectures are engaging and informational. There are quizzes on every chapter and I highly recommend you read the book. I'm only writing this because I wish I took him for Econ2020- he truly cares for his students, just show him you are trying.
His classes are not hard or are not easy. His homework assignments though are not bad at all, he might lecture heavy but it is a good thing because there is no other way to explain economics. Final is option, this is a class where you will pass it but unless you are studying econ 24/7 you won't get a A.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. Does not care about his students and does not give clear directions for the handful of assignments and projects given. All quizzes and most homework done online though. If you email him, he either won't respond or he will get mad at you for asking questions. Class lectures are pointless/ no relevancy to what you're learning.
assignment directions are extremely unclear almost every time, will get become very rude & agitated when asked about directions, or grades. Class is not mandatory, and has no relevance to what is on curriculum or quizzes. The worst professor Ive had, and by far the most difficult to communicate with in a respectful manner. Lots of online aspects
He doesn't use any powerpoints or guided notes to base his lectures off. He wants majority of the lecture to be "discussion based" so it gets boring if you don't actually participate. He's a very fast talker so taking notes gets kind of hard especially when it's all verbal and his own words. He doesn't give tests, just quizzes and homework.
Carolan definitely has a different teaching style than most as he focuses on real-world applications for almost every concept learned in the class. He offers several extra credit opportunities, enjoys class participation, gives weekly quizzes no tests/exams and the final exam was optional.
As a teacher, "Dr. C" is not good. I'm not someone who benefits from PowerPoints read to me, which is not what he does. But his discussions are tedious and exhausting. He comes off lazy with the stuff you'd think a teacher would have to do (example: grading. He hates grading anything). He's a fine person but a horrible instructor. Easy A though.
I took this as an online summer course. Case studies, online assignments, online quizzes weekly and only the final. Expects you to be a master of econ and have memorized the book. If you ask him a question, he will get offended. If he's upset, he will email the whole class and try to make you feel bad. Online made it easier but never again.
He held his team meetings once a week. there was also a second meeting specific to one person from your group to present that weeks assignments. His assignment were given out as a group so it allowed you to work as a team to get better understanding of the materials. He gave alot of homework but most of it was very easy to answer.
Belittles students and is rude and unspecific when answering emails.
Seems to think his class is the only thing in life you have to worry about. Cases every week, and the lectures are basically him having conversations with 3-5 students about their workplace experiences. Quiz answers are all online, so at least there's that. Often goes over time in his lectures as well.
This professor is very knowledgeable, however he is rude to some students. Lectures had some level of cringe when you would ask a question or participate. He creates rules or grading criteria AFTER or just before an assignment is due. He dropped or taxed grades on the very end based on participation. Nobody in the class knew of this requirement
I currently have Prof. Carolan for qmm2410 for the spring semester. He's honestly very clear on what he expects of us, and he gives a good amount of homework. As long as you do all of the online homework you'll be fine and there are tons of videos that show step by step what to do. Overall, the class is pretty great for an 8 weeker.
I took this professor for the summer session and it was pretty easy but tons of homework. Weekly quizzes, hw, and group case studies. Grades based on effort and 1 big final exam at the end.
He is very average. The class is easy to get through, but a lot of work. No exams until the final, which is online. He expects you to know econ very well. A little intense, but overall a class where you can get other assignments done.
Im seeing very accurate reviews. TONS of assigments, lectures A LOT, case studies are a pain (they are useless). He is not terrible but I dont like his style AT ALL. It does feel like he expects u to have a strong understanding of micro-econ concepts. His lectures were a waste of time imo, if u like econ, are good at it, then go ahead and take him.
Honestly, not my favorite. I was always nervous going to his lectures because I thought he would randomly pick on me since he relies so much on class discussion (even though he never did), econ isn't my greatest subject. The case studies were such a pain. Too difficult, but he only graded them based on if you somewhat understand it. Huge final.
One of the worst monstrosities Oakland has ever sloppily slapped together. I have no idea why they made this a half semester course, but expect at least 10 hours of work on a good week. I advise taking this course elsewhere if you can, or at least be prepared to handle the workload. Professor is fine, just a badly executed class.
Prof C is OKAY. Case studies almost every week and a lot of HW. Takes a long time to input grades for case studies which got frustrating. Big 3 part cumulative final; a case study and two multiple choice tests, one for first half of chapters and one for second half. ECON 3030 is a hard class as it is so I believe he made it as easy as it could be.
Don't listen to the bad reviews. I'm not good at economics but he made the material easy to understand. The lectures were discussion-based; he wants all students to participate, you'll learn more if you do. Do the online hw and case study before class, that's what we talk about. Final was online and 100 multiple choice questions and a mini case
I would not recommend this professor at all, particularly if you are a non-traditional student (let alone have DSS accommodations, which he seems to DETEST). He is abrasive and terrible at explaining things. I am a great student (usually all A's) who always does the reading and homework, yet half the time I had NO idea what he was talking about.
Dr. Carolan is a VERY GOOD professor. However, the 8-week format class is very fast-paced specially for heavy stats cource. Dr. Carolan still did an amazing job explaining things thoroughly. Definitely recommend taking him for stats and even economics class he teaches.
Definitely recommend making a connection with Dr. Carolan. If he knows you, he will give you particiaption points linently. Dr. Carolan also willing to go over the material personally if you make the connection and ask the question on one-on-one basis.
This class did require a lot of work, however, I only had him for half the semester so I expected double the normal amount of work. He cares that you try even if you did not get questions right. Love the class discussions :-)
It was half sem course so very fast. Prof. Carolan was awesome with his lectures. Assignments and homeworks on cengage and were too many for half semester. Would love to take his full semester courses. Easy A in the class if watched all videos and did all hw perfectly. Def. recommend him.
If someone going for Onlline classes do not take these course under Prof. Joseph. Professor does not have knowledge how online classes works. His notes/presentations are useless, you have to read textbook to understand his notes. It's like take the course and and learn yourself, as professor comes up with so many reasons. Grades are always late.
Carolan expects you to spend a minimum of 20 hours a week working on material/assignments. He's a good professor in the sense that he's passionate about the topic he teaches, which I do respect. However, he expects A LOT out of students. The amount of homework, quizzes, case studies, and other activities due on a weekly basis is honestly overkill.
You can always tell when a professor cares about their student's success or not. I have had this professor for both econ and business stats 2. He is very good. He explains the material thoroughly and takes the time to make sure students understand. His classes are not an easy A, but if you genuinely try it is obtainable.
Professor was very hostile when asked for help in emails, and seemed to have issues with students questioning how he sets up his assignments. Overall, I learned everything from the textbook and his lectures were all over the place for 3 hours straight.
He is very knowledgeable on economics but he is not tech savvy at all. He does not update grades because he does not know how to sync them from the online textbook. He will frequently make remarks about students who choose to not turn their webcams on, and sometimes speaks positively of political figures without relating it back into the lesson.
Terrible
Great professor, is interested in the subject and answers emails quickly. The grade consists of cengage, a final, and a couple class activities.
I took this course online in summer, asynchronous. I believe that it was manageable only because of the online aspect. I have only had two email correspondances with him, and the first was very rude. However, the second was very nice. Overall, this class sucks due to the content, but 1000000% recommend taking online regardless of prof.
2024 review: The professor is not bad or mean. His handwriting was hard to understand. Class should not offered as half semester course. There is way too much to read and way too much homework. Only 1 final and it is in 3 parts throughout a couple days. The homework is very hard to keep up with and reading is too long to understand. BOOK IS PRICEY.
Truthfully, Dr. Carolan isn't the best lecturer. But he's very available by email. This course is graded by online homework and a cumulative final, all online open book. If you put in the time, you will do well!
Professor Carolan was not bad at all. His lectures are hard to follow, but he genuinely wants his students to succeed. There is homework through Achieve and one final that is worth 45% of your grade that is through Achieve as well. The class isn't hard, you just need to put a little bit of effort into it.
His lectures are not the greatest, but everything is very easy to figure out on your own with the textbook. He is helpful and also understanding. There was only one exam and it was 40% of or grade, but we had 3 days to take it and it was online. He is a pretty laid back guy who just wants you to pass.
This is the best professor I have ever had! He tries his best to make sure all the students understand the material. If you need help do not hesitate to ask. He will make sure you understand. His work is credit or no credit and 1 exam at the end which is online. Take this professor!
He's a great guy. Lectures are online and i'll actually pay attention
Carolan's class is tough but manageable with effort. The workload is intense, but the lectures are engaging and the material is made easier with helpful study tools like Unstuck study. Attend class, do the readings, and you'll learn a lot.
Zooms are hard to follow and confusing. By the end of the semester only half the class would show up. Attendance was mandatory. THE DUE DATES ARE SO WEIRD AND INCONSISTENT. He does not accept late work and due dates are at random times, make sure to double check the "AM" and "PM". If you do take this class it is not hard to pass tho.
This class need to have an excel prerequisite. Very excel heavy and took me hours to get through homework.
He literally was just all over the place with formulas and was so unorganized and barely even did an organized excel problem in class. Doesnt seem like he even cares He mainly relies on the mindTap to teach us on our own. Which isnt really fair to have students rely on a 100 dollar website especially when they're paying 2000 dollars for this class.
Overall a decent professor. Handwrites lectures and can seem unorganized. Encourages class participation and answers emails quickly. Homework is heavy but unlimited tries make it easy. No tests or quizzes, just a cumulative final.
