He's a great professor...very down to earth. he is willing to help and understands that life happens and you can't ALWAYS be in class! i would recommend him for and interesting person for an easy class!
Cook is an outstanding teacher. He isn't the easiest, but as long as you study and keep up with your writing assignments, you'll get a good grade. He is very knowledgeable and teaches it smoothly. Cook is a really nice and down to earth guy, I'd recommend him to anyone. The only real qualm is that the books are pricey and you don't use them alot.
He rocks! I really got a lot out of this class.
Nice guy! Cool class. Besy professor I have had because he is very passionate about the subject and his students.
Makes you realize that sociological is in every aspect of our lives, and it is not hard to find. With his anecdotes and movies this class was interesting!
Cook is pretty clear on what he expects. There are 3 tests (multiple choice & fairly easy), 1 oral group presentation & 2 papers (you must have the book to write these, but this is the only thing you use the book for). He's generous with grades & has a passion for his subject. Pretty easy class, really cool teacher!
I was absolutely frustrated with this teacher... he mis-scored my projects twice (he later changed the grade) and was in general a waste of a class. I wish I had taken a different teacher. He killed the subject(sociology) for me and I am a Psych major.
make everything very clear, take alot of notes, and don't be absent
I don't know who that is sayin' that he is disappointing. This is one of the best teachers I have ever had in my life and I seriously doubt that mis scored a project or that he changed somebodys grade.
I have him right now for Intro to Film at night and for a Sociology class during the day. He is amazing in both classes. You can tell that he really knows his stuff. I think sociology really changed his life and he show that to us. The movies we watch in the film class are really cool but some are a little weird. He definitely loves movies!
I took Prof. Cook for Intro to Film and thought it was a great class. He's clearly very passionate about what he does and that makes the class even more interesting. The choice of films was different, but it was nice to be exposed to something I wouldn't normally have chosen. I would highly recommend this Professor!
He's a really great guy and a good teacher. He's gives out some hard stuff, but if you listen, then you will know how to do everything he gives you.
This Profs. class was difficult for me. He is strict on following rules exactly as stated and will provide no leaniancy on mistakes that are made. Very rigid with rules.
I took his class online and he is very clear with assignment outlines and expectations. He gives study guides for tests so if you look over the concepts he wants you to know and read about them in your text, the class in not difficult.
This class is easy. Three fairly easy multiple choice tests and two essays. If youstudy his Power Points you will pass.
I took Prof. Cook's fast track Social Problems class online. He had us watch a different movie each week. These movies were a wonderful example of the different social problems that we are faced with. Excellent course. I'd surely take a class taught by him again.
I love this teacher. He is very passionate about the subject and is always there to help someone when they are in need. Attendance is mandatory and you are graded on it and he does not tolerate disrespect. Other than that, the class environment is fun, there is a lot to learn, and Mr. Cook really loves to teach and it shows.
He only gives three tests, two essays, and one final. Only six grades for your final grade so there really isn't any room for error. His test are multiple choice but they are extremely detailed. Study all his power points well and read the chapter and you will do fine.
He's a good teacher. Only have a few tests and 2 papers from what I remember. The first half of the term is watching movie clips and going over notes, the last half is watching full movies. It was an interesting class.I missed a few more than the typical 3 absences and never touched the book, bs'd a lot of the work and still got an A. Recommended
The class was fairly easy. Everyday he lectures, you take notes, and you watch a couple of movies here and there. Pay attention to detail because he doesn't give a lot of tests and you don't have a lot of home/classwork, so if you bomb the tests then you'll probably fail the class. And we only had one or two major projects but they were easy!
This teacher is nice; however, he will let you know the first day of class to lose the ?consumer mentality? about your grade and what you may predict from the class. He informs you didn?t pay to require the course carry on in a way to suit you, and u didn?t pay for a particular grade in this course. Enjoy reading and writing-you do alot.Good Luck!
Do not go into this class expecting to get an A! If you want an A you literally have to work your butt off. The class is composed of numerous writing assignments, all of which are in essay format. You'll have several tests which are timed. Do the study guides if you expect a decent grade. I took him online and got an B! I was happy :)
I took Professor Cook both for SYG2000 and then SYG2010 summer A and B. I would have to say that his social problems class was a little easier compared to sociology. There are only two tests but numerous writing assignments. If you complete the discussions, read the chapters, and do the study guides you should get an A. I suggest taking him.
The following is stated in his syllabus: (Loose the "consumer mentality" concerning your grade and what you expect to get from this class. You did not pay for a specific grade in this class and you did not pay to insist that the course be conducted in a manner that suits you.) I hope this helps you decide if you want to take this teacher.
You do ALOT of reading. His tests are NOT easy! Tough grading style. This guy doesn't actually teach - when he does kind of, it's not good. I couldn't wait for this class to end. If you are are a hard working student, you will do fine!
There is no room for error in this course. Look elsewhere if you are looking for an easy professor/course. If you read everything he assigns in detail, complete all discussion posts on time, and realize that the test questions are application questions that require you to think, and know there is no exception/room for late work, you will do good
SOO BORING!
I took both Sociology and Film and thoroughly enjoyed and learned a lot from both classes. He's not difficult, but don't expect to skate through any of his classes. The tests are not very hard, especially if you study, even if only for half an hour. He's very helpful and answers any questions you might have. I would definitely take him again.
Awesome teacher! He definately has a passion for sociology and teaching it to students. I never thought I would enjoy this topic till he started teaching it to my class! Very awesome and work isnt too hard either, few test and paper to write!
One of my favorites,
Very Nice & empathetic. The videos that we were required to watch for the class for our disscussions were very interesting. You do alot of short essays for your disscussions but this just helps you get ready for your final Essay Exam. This class really helped me view or world differently. If you do your work youll do great!
Awesome teacher really loves his profession and teaching it. spends two classes going through a movie and one easy paper along with essay questions for exam. just be sure to know both terms and the creators of sociolgy and youll do great! loved him!
I had Prof Cook a few years ago and he's a great instructor! He cares about the subject & his students! He's fair and tell you up front what you need to do to earn your desired grade! I would take every class he teaches if my program would allow! Sociology rocks because of Prof. Cook!!
Outstanding. I dreaded Sociology prior to this class. But Cook has made it interesting. He expects a lot of work but it's not difficult to do. If you can keep up with the course load it's an easy and interesting class.
Model Teacher.... not only sparked my interest in this class but in Sociology in general. Great discussion leader. Strict in what he expects but doesn't cross the line as far as "abusing authority" AT ALL!***Immature people BEWARE, he has no tolerance. He treats you like a grown up and expects you to act like it!
Great professor. I would gladly take again. I learned a ton and enjoed a subject I thought I would hate. He doesnt expect the world in the way of homework but ensures everyone learns.
He was very rude and stubborn. He required you to watch two to three movies a week. Basically only talked about himself. Assigns three papers that are boring. I dropped the class because I couldn't stand his ignorance.
Excellent teacher. this course requires that you read and study everything that he assigns. His tests are hard, but overall this was one of my favorite classes at PSC.
Great teacher! Tests require a lot of memorization but he gives study guides to prepare you. Class was very interesting.
I went in knowing absolutely NOTHING about sociology and came out loving it! Professor Cook is an excellent teacher. I will not lie- this course requires that you read and study everything that he assigns. His tests are hard, but overall this was one of my favorite classes at PSC. :)
I had a 4.0 GPA before taking this course online. I had almost no problem with the homework, etc, until the final project. We were required to write a 1000 word essay about a social problem. My essay was atleast 1500 words long, met all the requirements. After the six miserable hours I spent on the essay I recieved a D which dropped me to a 75.
I really enjoyed and learned in the class. Professor Cook requires a lot, but it is achievable. Everything we took test on was provided prior to test taking. Very good on line class.
Took this class in the summer fast track, so it is a lot of work in a short time period.Quizzes are easy as long as you read the book.Discussions are from the book and films he has you watch. Great class, and great class to take online long as you can stay on task.
Took online, fast track.Lot of reading, writing discussion posts, and watching weekly documentaries to go along with discussion posts. Requires well written, at least 400 words, discussions. Very interesting course. Lots of work, but loved this course
I have taken this professor for about three classes now fixing to be four and is one of the best online classes I have taken. I am not the most organized and with the way he shows you everything that will be due ahead of time really helped me out. He answered my emails in a quickly manner. I would highly recommend him! Great experience all around!
I enjoyed the class and assignments but I only enjoyed about half of the assigned films. As an open minded individual, I think their could of been less controversial films assigned that would have been just as effective in the course.
I took online. A lot of reading and very time consuming.. not that bad though. Make sure you do really good on the cyber journeys if you want to get a good grade. His papers aren't bad.. He is a fair grader so don't freak out. He resounds via email fast. over all good class .. even though I really wanted an A I got a B.
I have attended Polk State for three years and taken many online professors. He is the best online teacher I have had. He give you all the dates and requirements from day one and nothing changes. He responds to emails quickly and is very easy to talk to. His requirements are reasonable enough to balance with work/kids.
There is a lot of writing you will have to write a 500 word discussion every week, sometimes two. Then you reply to 1 student in 150 words. You watch 2-4 movies per week you are responsible for getting the movies. Quiz every week. Midterm and Final paper is pretty lengthy as well. He is a great professor though! Easy A just do the work!
Not a particularly hard class. You have to read a chapter per week and take a quiz about the content on PAL. I found him to be a little annoying and arrogant, but not intolerable. Not too bad overall.
He is a great professor that clearly outlines what he expects from you day one. He doesn't seem to like giving 100s for written assignments though, and will give you an F if you don't follow instructions. Do your work and put some thought into your writing, and you will get an easy A!
I have been participating in this class and missed an assignment deadline because my computer froze up. I immediately e-mailed him to let him know what happened and I did not receive any feedback and was dropped from the class. This was unfair and an abuse of power. Discussions are essays & unit exams are four separate essay questions, not a test.
This professor was very helpful and clear throughout the course, even online. He has pretty simple assignments, but they can be lengthy. However, if you pay attention to the content, this class will be both pretty easy and interesting.
Prof. Cook is great. having transferred from a university, he was the only professor I had this semester that was university level in lectures, assignments, and knowledge. He's pretty funny and makes the material really easy to grasp. There is a chapter quiz every week, a section review, and section exam. No final, writing project instead.
You're expected to read a chapter, 500 word discussion (possibly 2 per week), 2-3 movies a week, reply to 1-2 classmates. The professor answered e-mails in a timely manner and was wiling to help with any issues. Have to say one of the best online professors I've had.
Professor Cook has good lectures. As long as you keep up with your assignments and pay attention in class you'll do just fine.
Mr. Cook is an awesome teacher. I took this class online and it wasn't bad at all. It honestly went by so fast and he grades assignments fairly and tells you why you recieved the grade you did. If you just take the time out to read and thoroughly examine the questions and answer them properly you won't have a problem. I'd definitely take him again.
Absolutely fun and easy course. Laid back professor but must put forth effort. As long as you can write on college level and understand lectures you'll pass.
Barely has office hours. When I asked for tips (because he kept giving me bad grades I did not deserve) he offered no help. His lectures are interesting but he is a tough grader and is unclear on what he wants you to answer. His tests are based on the book, vague, and not what he talks about in class.
In this class you get the grade you deserve. His main concern is that you have the best understanding of the material possible. Tests are tough, but they show wither or not you know the material. If I ever had a question, he responded to my email rather quickly. The concepts are a lot to swallow, but essential to your college career.
I took Professor Cook online and he was very understanding and a fair grader. Written exams are a little long, but that's to be expected. Will work with you if you have a serious emergency or family issue, other than that assignments are due no later than the due date posted. Weekly quizzes & writing assignments. Took 8 week course.
Super nice and is obviously passionate about what he is teaching. I highly recommend taking his film class, so much fan and very informational.
This guy is a fair in terms of you get what you deserve. However if you have any instance that's not life or death or a serious emergency, don't expect any mercy from this guy. The problem could be as simple as the school not having what you need and he still docks you for it. On top of it all he has a no make-up policy, It's ridiculous honestly
Great professor but he has a weird love for making powerpoints where the text color is close to the background color, making it hard to read. Hes usually late to class by 3 to five minutes. YOU DO NOT NEED THE TEXTBOOK. the quizzes are easy to find. You only need the textbook for the final reflection. DO NOT DO IT LAST MINUTE.
Professor Cook is a caring professor who really cares about his students understanding the material. I would recommend participating in class discussions and taking notes during his power points. It's mandatory to go on the days scheduled for in-class activities. If you miss an assignment, he does offer extra credit. Would highly recommend class
Super hard on grades. Didn't accept emails for talking. To many papers that are very vague. Needs more explaining or videos of what he thinks.
I have taken Prof. Cook for Intro to Sociology, Intro to Film, and I have signed up for his Social Problems class this summer. Really awesome teacher, funny, and insightful. He actually cares about what he's teaching, and you can tell he enjoys doing it. Not to mention, his classes are relatively easy. Only about 1 quiz and assignment a week!
I had an A+ throughout the whole semester, however, because I received a bad grade on his final paper which is worth 200 points and is split into two parts, it brought me down a whole letter grade. To me, that is ridiculous. If you take this course online, be prepared for a lot of writing.
Took this class online, absolutely no help from the professor. His grading policy is also wack, no one gets a 100 either, your options are 93,86,83,79 etc. never recieved a 100, very vague questions and doesn't provide feedback on what he would like to see, he says "great job" and u get an 86! Pathetic, no help, didn't learn anything, lots of work.
Professor Cook isn't really a teacher that you will hear from alot, with this being an online class.. This is the hardest class I have taken throughout my entire college experience. I would rather have taken 4 on campus fall classes at once instead of this summer online class. Alot of writing, weeks 2 and 6 are jammed with massive work, essays ect.
Professor Cook makes learning fun by challenging the students to think critically about the subject matter that he teaches through film, text, and lecture. If anyone finds themselves having to take a sociology course, I highly recommend taking one that Professor Cook teaches. You will not be disappointed.
Prof. Cook was awesome! Very laid back and helpful when needed! I would definitely recommend and take another one of his classes!
Prof. Cook is an awesome professor, test and quizzes are fairly easy and he gives more than enough time to completely everything. He does offer an extra credit assignment but its really Im needed because the work load is so simple. Learned a lot in this course and was I could take him again
I gave 3 stars because I did pass the class, but if you do not like watching films, taking notes on it, and writing a summary based on his questions, do not take him. He loves film but doesn't realize that this is not a film class - it's a sociology course, stay away from all the film work. Other than that, class participation is not needed.
Well I don't really like this professor due to the fact he requires you to read so much and then do an elaborate "activity" which is usually between a 500-800 word response. Then you do all of that just not to get a complete grade on it. He rarely gives out 100's and its honestly a lot do in a short time. Maybe he is better in person.
I took this class over the summer and its an easy A. He is very clear on what he expects from you the first day so that syllabus is gonna be your best friend. There is quiet a bit of work but its online and you work at your own pass so if you dont get the work done its on you. He always replied fast to my emails and gave me feedback! Thumbs up!
I took online intro to sociology and had an A the whole semester until the end. Weekly quizzes that aren't hard as long as you know the material and writing activities too that seem essay style. Had an A all year until the final, missed something from the rubric that turned my A to a B as the final grade. Good class, but pay attention to the rubric
I took Mr. Cook online for film and it ended up being one of the hardest classes I have ever taken! The assignments arent that hard, but his grading criteria is all over the place, with little to no feedback to help you improve. When I asked how to improve my grade on papers I was told I got a high B andthats good because I dont give out As

I took his online film class and it was fun but very essay heavy. You'll be writing at least 1 per week. I found them easy to do as you're only analyzing a film of your choice. He's a tough grader and although he always left extremely positive feedback on my essays, I never got higher than a 95% (but never lower than a 90%).
Tough grader, and expects nothing but top-notch work. He does give feedback but leaves you wondering like, "What more does he want?" Expect to write, a lot, every other day. Read the syllabus over and over again. Also read the module to make sure you understand what he is looking for. There is an option to make up missed work. Unsure about it
he teaches through crash course videos and blog posts on random websites. assigns 70 pg readings from a mediocre online textbook, assigns loosely related questions, and asks that responses be between 350 and 475 words. Gives ABSOLUTELY NO feedback and is a very unreasonable grader. highest grade he gives is a 93. take his class at your own risk.
View crash course videos, read blog posts on topics, read from an online textbook and answer questions in essay form. Answers to each question (typically 3 or more) is: 350-475 words. Papers due every other day. Feedback is limited and generalized. Tough grader. Highest grade: 92%. Anxiety level: Through the roof.
I find it hard to recommend Joseph Cook's Online Film Class for Summer. He is very passionate and knowledgeable about film, but this is detracted by his irritating grading. You'll never get above a 93% on almost every assignment. This is a bad course for someone not interested in a film major and just curious about the art form. Overall, mediocre
He clearly explains what he wants when doing the assignments. since it was an online class for the lecture he would post videos to watch then after being done a quiz of 10 questions was needed to be taken and then you would start the assignment or which ever you want to do first. Lots of typing but not so difficult for a 6 week class.
This guy is the definition of a tough grader. He gave me a C on a paper for one mistake in the citations. He is nice and respectful in emails and feedback but takes so many points off for pretty minor mistakes. I got an A in the class, but with putting a lot of effort into this class. Don't take him unless you want loads of work each week.
I don't believe he even reads my papers. No matter what I do, it seems I can't get over a certain grade on an assignment. All of the assignments I have submitted have all got a 46.5/50 no matter what amount of effort I put into it. You have a paper or discussion due every week with two opportunities to make up missing work. Two very easy quizzes
Professor Cooks seems very nice and ready to help. But like the earlier comment, you wont hear from him much. Since the class I took was online, I did not have to buy the physical book. The course came with the online version of the book. And, this class is more learning from the textbook than learning from the professor. You read LONG chapters.
View the videos, read the blog posts, read the online textbook (which is free) and answer questions in essay format. Each essay is about 3 questions with about 4 sub questions about 350-475 words each. Feedback is generalized. Won's grade higher than a 46.5/50 no matter the effort put in. Final is only 6 questions worth 10 points
I had a lot of issues with Professor Cook. He is completely apathetic and non understanding, almost egotistical. He will never give you full marks on anything, no matter how great it was or even if you hit every point on the rubric. His 'makeup work periods' are completely misleading. Do not reccommend.
Best online professor Ive ever had. Extremely understanding! Instead of giving me a zero right away for forgetting to include page numbers in my citations, he let me know what I needed to do for future papers. Interactive class. Textbook is online, NO COST! Learned so much from him than any other professor. I highly recommend him!
You will be writing essays every week. It is always 500+ words but he is an easy grader and the class moves by quickly.
FIL1000 is a nice class as it has no textbook and there is only 1 assignment a week. At first Professor Cook's feedback was confusing, but as the semester went on I learned what type of film analysis he was looking for (more personal and introspective) and I did very well on assignments. He is good about giving feedback and acknowledging success.
Professor Cook's feedback was confusing I would ask for help and the response was not helpful his response was a repeat of the question in the assignment that was given and would say just read it carefully you will get it. Turned in all assignments except one due to being sick. Overall I would not take request for this professor again.
Professor Cook is an excellent teacher. He gives great feedback, there is A LOT of homework & papers to write. However it is an easy class if you do the work. Professor Cook responds well to emails (unlike most professors), and is willing to help answer any questions. Would definitely this teacher again. Highly recommended.
I absolutely loved this professor and took two of his classes. He does require a decent amount of work but it is easy to connect to the material. He is always open to questions and gives amazing feedback. Would definitely recommend.
This is an engaged professor whose online course is well presented. You won't feel like you are spending your money to teach yourself like you may with other professors.
The course is very clear with requirements and assignments. No exams. Weekly discussion post and short quiz on the topic covered that week. No lectures, professor posts content concerning the topic that week. Watch/read the content, take notes, and do the assignments and you'll pass.
Smarmy, careless, and irritating professor. His online work deadlines are at 10 PM instead of midnight for the express purpose of tripping you up, he doesn't respond adequately to student emails, and I can already tell that this semester is going to be boorish and irritating.
This is the second course I've taken with Prof Cook and he is a good teacher. The course schedule is clear and the same week to week so there is never anything unexpected. Assignments each week are to write and answer questions on the topics of the week. The only issue was that he rarely awards 100% to students. Other than that, not too difficult.
This professor is by far the WORST I've ever seen. He doesn't do a good job at making his own assignments, and sometimes the questions in his quizzes DON'T even correlate with the videos he makes us watch. I just don't understand why you would assign us videos, and make questions that don't even correlate with them. Take him at your own risk.
STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSOR! No matter how good you do, he will literally give you a low grade. The median of each assignments are 76%. His assignment instructions are also unclear. He gives you a couple links and lets you figure out the rest. I had no choice but to take him since he was the only one teaching sociology. Very hard class!
Ehhh he's alright. He's a tough grader for sure. What I've noticed is that if you make one small mistake on your discussion post, you'll automatically get a "C" or a super low "B." Assignments are pretty bland too.
There are papers for every module, but his grading is very lenient. The weekly quizzes were easy and used true or false answers. The notes and papers for this class are my only warning, but besides the assignments it's a very interesting class and easy to engage in. As long as you follow the instructions with each module you'll do fine.
Professor Cook was easy to work with some of his papers were lengthy and hard to understand but once you got the idea of it you were good to go. Some papers are long some are shortened up into discussion post I had a really fun time watching the movies!
He is a very kind and helpful professor. Professor Cook gives really good feedback whether it was a general email or personalize comment. Overall, I really loved the class the topics were very engaging, and you will use more than just a textbook which helps keep the class interesting and current. Not many assignments so stay on top of your work.
He's a fine professor and a tough grader, that's true, but I took three classes with him and finished with A grades in all of them. He gives you two bonus activities throughout the class to replace a 0 with.
Professor Cook is a great professor. Yes, he is a tough grader, but he provides great feedback on what you did right and what can be improved. Mostly all activities are essay style, however it's mostly just one written assignment per week. If you do your work and stay up to date you will be fine! I'd definitely take him again for another course!
Very few assignments, majority being papers. Like many other students noted, it is rare for him to give students more than a 93% on them; but further into the class I noticed that its not impossible to earn more than that, but you have to go above and beyond on the details, not just what is asked of you. He did give great feedback and it helped me.
Cook gives good feedback and his class has little assignments, HOWEVER, he's very critical with his grading. It's almost impossible to earn more than a 93% on his assignments. There's also some quizzes sprinkled here and there which you need to then do amazing on because if your grade drops to a B, it will be extremely hard to raise back to an A.
I took one of his Sociology courses and learned a lot. While I didn't get the grade I expected (mostly due to me slacking on some quizzes), I really enjoyed the class and found the weekly essays super interesting and engaging. This class has very few assignments and most are papers so if you don't like writing definitely don't take his classes.
The professor has a tough grading system, but the class is engaging if you stay on top of the assignments. I found unstuckstudy super helpful for quiz prep alongside the lectures. Worth taking if you're willing to put in the work.
This course is easy to navigate with a clear syllabus and grading criteria. While some of the assignments were lengthy; they covered critical topics which help to enhance learning here at PSC. His class had a research component unlike any other class took before. Overall, amazing course and amazing professor. Would take again!
Only issue i had was he didn't extend an assignment after we had a hurricane come though and knock out our power for 4 days.
The professor provided videos/websites for each module, which I liked. You're going to have to write A LOT, and he grades at a specific criteria, so it is difficult to get anything above 93%. He gives good feedback. Would take again!
Every week we learned about an aspect of film, watched a movie, and wrote about it. Sometimes in paper format, others in discussion. Fun class if you enjoy film, easy if you understand what the assignment is and engage with your chosen movie as you watch. Great professor!
Overall, probably the most fun course I have taken so far at Polk. The workload would probably not be ideal if you are taking multiple classes but it worked fine for my 2 courses I took alongside it. Professor is also very quick to respond to emails and leaves great feedback. He is a bit of a picky grader but I still managed to get an A.
