a bit geeky but very clear and very helpfull
Great prof, really knows his stuff. Lecture notes are in normal-people format, less esoteric than most. Pretty cute guy.
great guy! good lecture notes too. quirkiest prof i've met! i like him.
I want his babies.
He's cute if you pay attention!
His lectures are entertaining and his notes are so incredibly better then every other profs notes. And I'm getting an A in his class!!!(very rare)
He reminds me of Einstein, not brain-wise but personality-wise. He's eccentric & his jokes are pretty cheesy. But a good prof, altho he'll have a few challenging Qs on the exam.
he's awesome in class a great prof, but ask him a question 1 on 1 and the guy's a freakin jerk
i didn't learn anything from him...
very hard tests, and I don't know what's the purpose of the lecture if he's going to write the tests that way..
Cute guy. Lectures aren't bad, and he posts stellar notes on web ct. Exams are challenging though, be sure to do all his practice probs before hand.
Great lectures. Interesting professor. Exams are wicked hard, but if you do all his practice problems you'll be better prepared.
By far my favorite bio prof. Very cute, great lecturer but goes a little fast, be sure to keep up. Great notes. Practice problems are key for exam success.
Professor Dent keeps the class very interesting. Be sure to do his practice problems. He gives a lot of tricky questions and the practice problem can tell you where he likes to trick the students. Don't really need to go to class to get an A. Read his lectures in detail and if you don't understand something, refer to the textbook.
Prof. Dent is one of the great chillers in the McGill Bio Dept. He teaches with clarity, ingenuity, and patience. He is a wealth of info and willingly helps his student. Best of all, he doesnt have the "prof complex" which means he is easy to approach and a great guy. He is definitely one of the best profs ive ever had and recommend his clas highly
He's a great prof, very good teaching skills, funny lectures and everything is well explained and clear...one thing though....his exams are HELL...you'll fail if you don't study your ass off and even if you do, you need to be fairly inclined to get an A...seriously his Q's are VERY DIFFICULT
Awesome teacher. Very clear lectures, fantastic slides (very organized!)His first section isn't easy but with study it is totally feasible to get an A!
:( :( :( all I can say...
LOVE HIM! "DNA isn't written in english... because then what would francophones do?"
He's a pretty good professor. His lectures were very clear but sometimes hard to pay attention to. His questions were a little too challenging on the midterms and final but overall he was a decent prof.
Will make you want to dent your head.
His first part of material isn't easy and has physics involved. Questions are problem solving and equations type. Last portion seemed so easy and interesting, but final questions were very challenging. DO PRACTICE QUESTIONS! They looked irrelevant to class material, but a lot of them came regardless. It's almost ridiculous.
A very good Prof, gives clear concise lectures. But I can imagine being bored if I wasn't so interested in genetics... he has a monotone voice.
A bit brief when covering certain concepts in class; make sure you go over them in more detail before the exam, and practice loads of application questions because that is pretty much the exam!
Hardest [rpf ever... Memorizing is not enough, you need to know how to apply the concepts.
good prof but seriously needs to curve...
He goes over the concepts in class VERY briefly and then expects you to know how to apply them extensively on the exam
Exams were very similar to my grade 12 biology tests. Listen to his lecture recordings at 1.4x speed (he talks fairly slowly), and spend some extra time going over photosynthesis, cellular respiration, and genetics. Overall, entertaining prof with a good sense of humour. Gloss over lab manuals & answer focus Q's for the lab portion. Good luck!
Horrible. Horrible. Horrible. Don't bother learning anything he teaches in class because he doesn't test you on it. Figure out how to do his seemingly impossible practice questions because that's all you're tested on. The midterm average was 59. If you fail the first midterm (which is very likely) you can easily make up for it after Dent's section.
Definitely one of the better professors at McGill. I took this class back in '12 but lectures seem to remain consistent over the years. Yes, his questions are tricky, but that's the whole point... How else are you going to prepare for worse profs in later years?
Ok I have never felt the need to post on this site until now. That's how vehemently I dislike this man. He is an atrocious lecturer and doesn't explain anything on the slide, which can sometimes appear to contradict what he is saying. Thing is all the other profs for this course were great, it's just this man. Is. Terrible.
Worst prof i have ever had!
Goes through his notes at a fairly brisk pace while explaining concepts in a fairly clear way. Definitely need to rewatch his lectures and reference the textbook whenever he doesn't explain something clearly. He has many resources and practice questions available and those are highly recommended if you want to do well on the exams.
Dent is a very clear lecturer, yet does not delve into the concepts as much as he should to prepare the class for his exams. Exams are composed of both very simple memorization questions and very difficult genetic questions that require extensive application of the concepts (probability calculations). DO THE PRACTICE QUESTIONS
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. I have never posted on this site before until I had this prof and took Biol 306. His first midterm was nothing like the practice problems, and his second set on material is just animal model experiment data over and over and over.... stay away!!!
Understanding how to do the genetics problems are essential to getting a good grade in his course! Getting an A takes effort, but definitely not impossible. And I also advise you to know the lab section very well since exam questions do test lab information.
Dent is enthusiastic in class and explains concepts well overall. Questions are answered and notes are provided. He could be more articulate when explaining processes, provide more detail, incorporate more diagrams/animations, and show how to do genetic problems. Tests could be easier in my opinion as the exam averages are low. Do Mastering Bio!!!
Dent is funny and smart! His exams are hard though, and mostly test you on understanding and application, as opposed to memorization. Be sure to have a clear understanding of concepts, and looking up the abstracts/figures of papers cited is helpful. If you have questions, ask him! He's more than happy to help. Other profs test more on memorization.
He is an extraordinarily smart professor. He is an extremely well-rounded individual in terms of his profound knowledge ranging from linguistics, history and neuroscience, and ties it all together beautifully. Life-changing professor. Other professors' questions in 306 are shallow , whereas his questions require critical thinking. A is doable.
Honestly, one of the most difficult profs. His exam questionslets not talk about it. THEY'RE SO DIFFICULT! Not difficult as in tough, but difficult as in he BARELY, BAAAARREEELLLYYYYY touched on those important concepts in class that he will be testing. Like, what's the point of giving lectures if your exams are going to be set in another world :(
Dent is an interesting prof, however his grading criterias are unclear and his tests are known to be though. Average on the midterm was 60% and he did not curve it even though most McGill prof try to have a 70% average. For a freshmen course it could be easier.
very hard prof who barely mentions concepts in tests...
The overall class itself is fine. The content isn't terribly difficult; HOWEVER literally no practice is given. No bio equivalent to webwork currently exists. Nothing. You are left to your own devices. Nor does it help how access to past exams is a topic he's very willing to avoid. Reasons why? no freaking clue.
Biology itself is a tough course, there is a lot of information. I don't think his tests are fair. He focuses on random parts of the course extensively, won't spend enough time testing you on all the things you've learnt. Question phrasing is really difficult to decipher, questions have different answers based on the way you interpret them.
Lot of material but you can teach yourself the concepts. Smart but sub-par instructor exam focuses on application & students ill-prepared. He slayed his students on the midterm and refused to curve it. He gives practice problems before exams but most you've never seen before, and must learn from confusing solutions. Cool info, hard class.
Genetics went from 0 to 100 real quick in this class. I used to like it before I took this course. It was very difficult for me to stay awake in this class and I dreaded watching the lectures. His problems are tough. Do lots of practice if you want a good mark. I got wrecked in his section of the midterm and went ham for the final to save myself.
I thought all the comments for him on this class were excessive. Lots of people just complain after flunking. I went over the class lectures three times. I did the practice questions a minimum of two times. Then the midterm happened. The midterm questions were nothing like the practice ones, that he never actually explains how to solve or apply eqs
Well-prepared and organized lectures. Engages the class with live clicker questions polling.
Bad lecturer
Great lecturer, people complain because it isn't as sugar coated and basic as most first year classes.
Smart guy and speaks clearly (unlike most profs I've had) but his lectures are all graphs and images that he explains during class. I personally don't like classes like this as there's no information on the actual slides. Make sure to understand all concepts because literally everything is application. BUY NTC's if you don't take your own notes.
He seems to know what he is talking about and is engaging in teaching, but the overall quality is extremely terrible. Terrible slides sometimes with an image that has no explanation at all.
Spells colour color
He definitely knows what he is talking about but his explanations are not clear, even if you attend class you won't really get it until you work it on your own. Midterm was hard but overall his questions on the final were fair. I recommend you do all his practice questions and make sure you REALLY understand all his explanations
To me, I coundn't fully grasp the knowledge in his lectures and need to listen to the recordings again. A lot of his practice questions for the exams were DIFFICULT, but definitely do them all and understand them all. They are very representative. Ask him questions if you don't get it yourself, he will explain it pretty well.
Prof. Dent is okay for me, even though he makes mistakes during lectures from time to time. The processes or some concepts are not easily understood from his explanation. Read his notes and memorize it. For his section, you need to know and somewhat apply the knowledge. His final was not that hard last year. Hint: Do the practice problems
Great professor! His teaching and testing methods are a bit different from usual biology classes, but I think he's got it right by emphasizing reasoning and data analysis. There can be unclear details in his lectures, but Professor Dent is accessible outside class for clarifications! Pay attention to what he says in class in addition to the slides.
He is a very unenthused professor. His lack of passion makes it seem as though he dislikes teaching. Also, he doesn't really go in-depth in lectures. Don't study off of his slides (they have no information... just diagrams), rather, review all of his PDF notes that he posts on myCourses. Read them once, twice, thrice. His practice exams are useful.
I have Professor Dent during Covid, so maybe he isn't so bad usually, but right now, his section of the course is the worst. His lectures are very boring and the quizzes (no exams because its online) super hard! His portion is very heavy on neuroscience and even my friends in neuroscience have difficulty helping me with the material.
Biol 306 experience this year during the pandemic was destroyed by him. I still don't understand why the other 2 profs can change their teaching by pre-recorded videos and state everything in 20min clearly but he can't. The lectures are so boring and not useful at all for his quizzes. Really struggling with his sections, especially without NTCs.
Lectures are extremely dense and far too long (expect up to 5 x 1h lectures and the corresponding quiz due less than a week later). Takes up so much time watching pre-recorded lectures. Very difficult to follow content, extremely poor organization for quiz/lectures and often rude in email correspondence. Overall would not take again.
Professor Dent is a controversial figure. A lot of people find him kind of abrasive, but he just doesn't like stupid questions. He's blunt, and his jokes are really funny if you enjoy a dad joke or two. You must read his lecture notes he posts. There is information in those that will be on the exams that is not featured in lecture. He's pretty good
Take time reviewing his lectures, and focus on the clicker questions and the MyDalite questions -- those were sometimes word-for-word on the exams. His PDF versions of the notes are quite helpful. The genetics unit isn't really well-explained, go to YouTube to learn that. Tests are pretty tricky.
He clearly explains how genetics work and how each concept is connected to the next. He doesn't give much practice, and the questions he does give are much more difficult than what we are taught, so it is hard to know if you are understanding his content. The final exam was a good reflection of his lectures. He is very blunt.
Would rather spend 20 minutes on the history of the telegraph than teach students how to apply those formulas that will actually be on the exams. Be ready to take at least 20 hours to figure out everything by yourself after his section.
A biology course free of rote memorization... Sweet.
He is an awful professor in almost every sense of the word. He is monotonous, his lectures often times seem more like him rambling to himself than him presenting any coherent flow of lecture content. Has had extremely unprofessional moments of not showing up to class without warning, and not helping when students reach out.
Dent is an underrated professor! His content was inherently more difficult, but he was very fair. His lectures were engaging and enjoyable, and his questions on the final were similar to the practice. He's intimidating at first, but after asking a few questions, you'll realize he means well - you may even encounter some dad jokes here and there.
I really liked his lectures, they were challenging, but once you start to understand it's fun. As an art student without any background in biology, just be very careful with the exams. Got very low marks on that. Take advantage of the lab marks.
Engaging lectures and clearly explains complex topics. Brings up helpful examples and keeps students engaged. Hosts final review sessions and seems to actually care. Exam was fair as long as you studied well.
Cool, smart guy but lectures are just images and graphs with no explanations. The questions are pure application and very difficult, and you never know what to expect in exams, they don't resemble the practice ones. This course is divided between 2 instructors and the first chunk was great, he ruined the rest for me, unnecessarily difficult.
Dent's lectures are just him presenting complex graphs associated describing experiments, which he goes on to explain in detail. His test questions are very difficult, wordy multiple choice questions, which take forever to understand. However, you can still do well if you put in the effort to understand the experiments he presents in his lectures.
Dent often explains the finer details of the concepts he teaches, but fails to really give a comprehensive overview, making his lectures kind of disjointed and confusing. He also tends to get sidetracked a lot during lectures, brushing over key points in favour of some irrelevant topic. His lecture notes are pretty good, however.
Bro just wanted to leave since he would end the lectures super early instead of actually spending more time on fully explaining concepts. His section was the hardest and his questions were overly complicated. Spend the most time on his section if you can since the final was 70% his content basically. Good luck :(
Tries his best to make the lectures engaging but is not the best at explaining the material. Please be sure to dedicate lots of time to studying his section because it will ruin your grades if you don't. He had a couple review sessions where you could ask questions, but a vast majority of his questions are difficult.
This guy is a terrible teacher you can tell in his voice he is intentiionally trying to complicate his questions his rhetorical questions are very frustrating when he asks you the answer to his over complicated questions His explanations were even worse Highly recommend staying away from him no idea how he is a teacher
Very smart prof, and explains things quite well. However, I find it VERY annoying that all the lecture slides are just figures without explanations. This is extremely painful for me to review for the final exam, I need to rewatch all the lecture recordings for his section of the course.
Awful professor. Worst teacher I've ever had at McGill. His slides have little to no text, only graphs that can't be understood unless you write down word for word what he says and his exam questions are only based on the graphs presented in class. His neurophysiology section was bad too, barely any problem solving examples done in class.
Lectures are very boring, he doesn't really seem to care. The slides aren't helpful and you need to watch recordings to study for exams. His questions are long and frustrating, but he really doesn't emphasize memorizing on the exam in a bio class, so that redeemed him a little.
He seems not to be "present" when he lectures, almost as though he is somewhere else in his head. I thought that his name should be changed from "Prof Dent" to "Prof Dead".
loved his section, behavioural biology/neuroscience is fascinating. I actually had fun writing the final: it's 95% logic questions where critical thinking >> memorization. memorizing neural circuits for the final is a waste of time–just know it well. Everything on the final is figure-outable. Very sharp guy, but not the friendliest.
Confusing slides
This prof is obviously super smart and fair. It's up to you to prep and post-lecture work. The slides and lecture notes make a lot more sense if you review them a lot. Go to lectures prepared. Re-listen to the earlier lectures. He really wants you to succeed - he answers our questions; he puts up clicker questions; and even a review session.
Great lectures and notes, make sure you do all the practice questions and understand the logic behind them before the exam and you'll be fine.
lot of content that was just droned about to you, not particularly engaging
He is the meanest professor I have ever had. I asked him a question after a class about his section in the final exam and couldn't even bother to look at me. I even emailed him and his response was so condescending even though my question was very simple and straightforward. He is horrible at teaching. His slides suck and he barely explains.
