Not really an easy class if you're a slacker who lives on campus and doesn't like to go to class; teacher is pretty good though.
haha Dr.Dew is the man!! he was pretty chill...just make sure he likes you
make sure you know the slides because exactly what is on the slides is what is on the test... he's got some pretty interesting stories he tells in class
I call him Die Hard Dew. His quizzes are hard & fill in the blank. The Lab taken here didn't coincide with the class material learned. Hardest 1 credit class I ever took. Pick another lab teacher if possible, other teachers are easier.
Dr. Dew is the best professor for Bio. He is always there when something needs to be explained. His quizes are hard, but the answers come directly from your lab manual. So STUDY ten minutes before class. Dr. Dew curves like a mother, so be appreciative.
At first, his lab seems a bit difficult, he gives fill in the blank quizzes every week. But if you read the material and study at least 20 minutes for each test you should do ok. He's very laid back and well, different.
I hate his quizzes. They are hard even you study. You never know what his is going to ask you. The final is rediculous. He missed inform how you should prepare. You study hard and you still miss a lot. It is very discouraging. I heard other teachers are easier. However, he does tells interesting stories in the class though.
He is really chill. Make sure you study for your quizzes. He is def. cute.
He is weird. He seems very nice, but he is hateful because of his extremly hard quizzes. They are hard even you study. I spent a lot of time and still got a C at the end. He mis-informed about how he would test on the final. If you don't care for your grade, then choose him. You can learn a lot, but this is the hardest 1 credit course.
I really like Dr. Dew. He knows exactly what he is talking about and give explains and good explanations for everything. The only thing is his exams don't really reflect the material and are very hard. Also, they are on a lot of information. I enjoyed listening to him, but often felt unprepared for his exams even after studying for them.
Everyone says that he's an easy teacher but I had him for lab and I thought the quizzes were very hard. I studied his notes but they obviously didn't help me. He also didn't prepare us for the final. None of us knew what to expect. The final ended up being a bunch of different stations that we had to identify the speciman and answer questions.
I took his lecture and lab in the same semester. Taking both of them together was very helpful. His lecture tests are multiple choice and unbelivably hard, but he curves like crazy! His lab tests are fill in the blank and he gives you 10-15 min to study at the beginning of class. If you JUST study for these 10-15 min, you should get an B.
He is enthusiastic about Biology, which is cool. But, his lectures and his exams differ so much. I studied my notes that I took at every lecture, but when it came time for the exam they were nearly useless to me because the questions on the exam weren't covered at all. He curves, great benefit, but I came out with a C.
i don't know if is name is joseph or larry, but i don't think he knew this was a non-science major biology.it was too hard and to much material.he is a nice guy and his stories are great.i have never seen an instructor curve the way he does, without his curving i would have got an F but got a C.i thought the slides were useless, did not buy the book.
Mandatory attendance, he takes role every class. Barely used the text, but it is a good reference if you miss class, stay on top of the lectures and dont wait until the last minute to study andn you can pass the test with no problem. lecture are boring and his lectutre style does not hold the your attention, but the course material is fairly easy
He's a great teacher. He always has interesting anecdotes to add so it makes it easier to remember the material. That being said, his tests are ridiculous. He asks questions about years and numbers that just aren't relevant. He does grade on a curve though, so you can still get an A if you study. He's also very sweet and cute.
Doctor Larry Joseph Dew is a beast. He knows what he's lecturing to his students and you don't even need the text book. His lecture class provides the powerpoint on blackboard. He curves the exams as well, depending on how many people did bad on the exam. I recommend that you take him. He is nice too. BE ON TIME to class and DO NOT TALK in class.
He is extremely passionate about biology. I find sciences hard in general, but he tells great stories to help you relate to the topics. He does EVERYTHING on powerpoint, but after class you can print them all out. Shows alot of pictures and diagrams -- He is pretty helpful in responding to any questions you have. Good teacher in general.
This guy was awesome! Loved all of his PowerPoint slide shows and his little jokes every now and then! He's a really friendly dude and boy have I learned a lot from him. SIGN UP FOR HIS CLASS!
All these reviews saying Dew is "easy" is ridiculous. I ended up with a B in the course, but as much as I studied, I shouldve gotten an A! Curves his exams which helps ALOT, but granted, if it weren't for the curve, the whole class would fail.He asks TRICKY questions about the smallest details in his lectures.Course isnt impossible, but challenging.
He gives awesome lectures but terrible tests! The tests are nitpicky and the best way to do well is to go through the powerpoints slide by slide and make flash cards of EVERY DETAIL. His lectures are really interesting, though and you can tell he loves his subject. PS I definately thought he was cute, which made it hard to concentrate sometimes!
I had Dr. Dew for Bios 1073 and Bios 1071. I recommend taking him for both lecture and lab. He's super fun, and he's incredibly passionate about biology. His lectures are exciting, and he's cute as a button. Extremely helpful and caring, too. His tests can be tricky, but if you study the Power Point slides, you'll be fine. Highly recommended! :D
Dr. Dew is very friendly, knowledgeable, and has an obvious passion for biology. He's a great teacher and his lectures are engaging. That said, his tests sometimes rough. Some of them are very straightforward, but others go a completely different direction. I guess it's just his style, but the tests are inconsistent in their levels of difficulty.
Very passionate about his work. I would recommend this professor to anyone that has to take BIOS 1073. Study his powerpoint slides and you will do fine on his exams.
Dr Dew has a huge love for biology. This love began to rub off on me as I became more and more interested in class... granted I would sleep sometimes. He is very knowledgable and a genuinely nice guy. His tests were tough though. I never opened my book, which probably lost me 1-4 questions per test. I'd def recommend Dr. Dew.
Mostly teaches off of powerpoints nut loves Bio and his students it shows. Makes class as fun as it can be and breaks down info into common man language, very helpful, he was a delight
Take notes on what he lectures during the first ten minutes of class and you'll pass the weekly quizzes. Simple as that. Easy class and he's helpful.
Dr. Dew is a nice teacher and he is passionate about his work. Even so, most students didn't do well on his tests because he asks things that we never went over in class. I got a C in his lecture and B in his lab.
Great lectures, SUPER TRICKY TESTS. Best way to take notes is to just write down everything he says verbally in class and then go back to his lectures he posts on Bb and fill in the info off the slides. You have to know details of what he says, not just notes on slides. A bit unreasonable - class average was in the 50s. Goodbye 4.0 - not happy!
Dr. Dew is an amazing lecturer and teacher! He is so passionate about biology and hopes that everyone can have the passion that he has. His p.points are clear and organized. He explains things in a way everyone can understand. His test aren't bad if you go over powerpoints, take notes, and read the book every now and then. Take him! He's cute too!
The class is really fun, if you EVER have a problem, feel free to talk to him--he is very passionate about teaching his students and he's really nice. Very outgoing teacher, probably the best to have as your first BIO class!
Dr. Dew curves BIG time because no one can pass his test, due to the fact he test you on things he does NOT go over! I got a 60 C for the semester, because of the curve. He goes over A LOT of material and BARELY ANY is on his test! Hopefully one day he realizes he needs a new method! but at least he curves!
His tests are really hard. He puts random questions that you would never think to remember. I would recommend him though, he is really passionate about what he is teaching. If you study hard, you will do fine.
Dr. Dew is adorable! He has such a strong passion for what he teaches. Its truly endearing. His tests are not easy, however. If you study and make note cards then you will most likely pass because most of the test questions are definitions. Watch any videos he shows in class/emails because they will be also be used as test questions. A+ professor!
TAKE THIS GUY FOR THIS CLASS! Seriously. I went in the class thinking I'd be bored and came out knowing a few things that are interesting. Passionate about material. Eager for students to pass. Shows interesting material. Attendance is mandatory. Tests aren't impossible. READ THE POWERPOINT SLIDES. Hard to fail unless you bomb a test. Good luck.
This guy is ridiculous, if you ask him a question he would not give you an answer, and his quizes are very hard, don't take him unless your very patient with A#@ H*$s
He tests over things that are NOT ON THE POWERPOINT!! He only teaches from powerpoint. If the highest grade in your class is an 83, there is something wrong. He questions you over pointless things that mean something to him and have nothing to do with the class. We'll be learning about meiosis, he'll ask about what a sea turtle from Africa mighteat
Wouldn't recommend him b/c is tests are unreasonably hard. Asks about VERY nitpicky things instead of focusing on the general material (which there is A LOT of). Class avg. for tests was in the 60's..he does a big curve though; no one would pass without it. And yes, I went to class, took detailed notes, & studied for days for each test.
I honestly can't believe that anyone who left positive feedback here actually took a class with Dr. Dew. He makes his tests purposefully ridiculous, so that the majority of the class does poorly and he can grade on a curve (in which very few students are able to earn As). He is very condescending to his students, and extremely unhelpful! Beware!
Dr. Dew gives 4 exams & an optional final. The exams are graded on a huge curve. Highest grade anyone got on any exam in my class was an 84 (but thats an A)You have to study & take notes on everything he lectures, not just what's on the powerpoints. Participation is iclicker questions-that counts as an exam.
Dr. Dew is adorable, and loves his biology as well as teaching it to others. His class was always interesting. He wants his students to have a good time. You can ask him anything, and he has a lot to say. His tests are hard, but his grading curve makes them very survivable. Loved this professor! hope to have him again
I found dr. Dew very funny and interesting. I loved his class, but his tests were hard. You have to go to class and take very good notes in order to pass. He wants his students to pay attention in class and what he says in class is always on the test. Don't just study off of the slides, write down anything he says. If you hate bio, don't take it.
He's a good teacher and he cares for his students, but his tests are very difficult. Many of his test questions are things he mentions in his class that have little to do with the lecture. Thankfully he curves, so if you try hard you can still make an A. Just show up for class and PAY ATTENTION.
You can tell he loves the subject. If you want to pass the class, record the lectures and relisten to them later, because he tests on the random, tibits you'd never think of, and BARELY on the slides.
tests were very tricky; out of 50 multiple choice, 40 were straight forward from notes, the remaining 10 were from some insignificant side note, usually about one of his personal experiences, that he briefly mentions in class. He believes that this is the only way to hold students accountable for going to class. Bad teacher overall.
Tests were designed so that everyone did horrible, so he would then give a "generous" curve to make up for it. He doesn't hand back tests so the only way you can see what you get wrong is going to his office. When I did that, I found a total of 5 multiple choice questions that he marked wrong on EVERYONE'S test. Class is discouraging to bio lovers
I wish I would've checked this site before registering for this class. When someone says that the exams are "tricky" it isn't a good thing. I would absolutely not recommend this teacher. Counts heavily against you for absences, even though his attendance methods are flawed and inconsistent. Exams are ridiculous. No amt of studying can prepare you.
I am completely confused as to why UNO allows this guy to teach. As another post mentioned, his class is really discouraging. You might find his lectures interesting initially, but be prepared to be discouraged and quickly lose interest. This class is a terrible representation of what you can expect from upper level bio classes. Hang in there
I'm not sure why so many people are complaining about this class. The teacher has a passion for his topic and it shows in his teaching. If you study your notes, the power points, and pay attention in class, you will do fine. He was always happy to answer questions after class if you needed something cleared up.
Dew is a really nice guy and very helpful if you visit him during office hours but his lectures can be somewhat confusing and his exam questions are not always the most relevant. He does however use a very large curve so it is not difficult to get a good grade in his class.
His class is pretty hard. He uses a lot of examples in the lectures, and his tests include a lot of examples from the class and the textbook. He also puts a lot of random stuff on the test.
He does curves his test very heavily. However, when you take your first test, you will realize that a good bit of the questions are from things not pointed out on the powerpoint, but useless facts that he say. You will probably receive a low grade on the first test, but luckily the final is optional and can replace your lowest test score.
If you want a professor that will put trivia questions on every exam, by all means take Dr. Dew. I don't understand why the university even lets him lecture here. We study for countless hours on the slides when he puts random questions on the exams.
Dew is interested in what he teaches, and it does rub off on his students. However, no amount of studying can prepare you for his exams(contain trivial questions). How I can read every chapter from the book, study the notes, and still score in the mid 60s on his exams boggles my mind. He curves the grades heavily, but leaves you feeling uneducated.
I took Biodiversity with Dr.Dew in the fall. Bottom line, you have to read the chapters to get the full understanding because his powerpoint notes are very board. Study and take notes on any pictures given. The test are fairly hard but slightly easier but if you read and study the notes. Must put in work, not an easy class.
Tough tests but he makes up for it by being so passionate about the class. Make sure you write what he says. A good bit of the test are random facts he says that aren't on the powerpoints.
He is the worst teacher ever. His test questions are all over the place. It is like he pulls them out of thin air. The majority of the questions are not on slides he posts on moodle they are from things he said in class ONE time. Oh not to mention that you can't hear him because he speaks so softly when hes teaching 200 students. Don't take him!!!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! He doesn't care if he students are getting bad grades and won't do anything to help. His tests are all trivia questions and random questions, with barely any questions from the power points. He may look like he just came from the safari and knows what he's talking about, but this is one of the worst classes I've ever taken.
Extremely hard test but he curves a lot! amazing teacher!! makes class so fun and interesting! you will never be bored in his class!
Keeps the class interesting, knows what's he's talking about, he has a answer to every question asked, you have to show up to class and take notes on some random things he talks about so if you pay attention you get a freebie on the test. Curves really big and gives you ways to get extra credit, I liked it
His tests are pretty hard, and whatever seems like "additional info" that he gives on the power point is probably on the test, so write it down. But his enthusiasm for the class made me enjoy it and he could be pretty funny at times. I do recommend him because he is pretty fun, (he even brought his parrot to class), but you do need to study hard.
Amazing teacher! He is passionate and loves what he teaches. EXTREMELY lenient, he curves the grade immensely AND drops the lowest of five grades. Tests are not cumulative and you DO NOT need the book. If this class were any easier it would be remedial.
I HATE Biology. But I actually really enjoyed this class, he has a way of making the subject interesting. Make sure to go to class, and take notes on everything. He puts his random fun facts on the test. But there is a huge curve.
Find another teacher, his lectures are great but you will regret your entire life when you see his tests. I barely have a C in his class, I pay attention, attend every class, and read his Power-points online but evidently if you're not an absolute expert in Biology already, you won't have fun.
Dr. Dew's class was challenging, especially for an entry level lecture. His lesctures were always interesting, though, and he as a person is very endearing and kind hearted. I enjoyed the class, but not the difficulty of the tests. Luckily, he gives substantial extra credit, allowing me to make an A.
I know a lot of people don't like Dew, but honestly he helped me figure out exactly what I wanted to do with my life. There were times when his lecture got boring, and it was not my favorite thing in the world to have to buy an iClicker, but he is really passionate about Biology and he has been everywhere and studied everything. Perfect proffessor.
No assignments or hw, just tests and iClicker quizzes. Great teacher, truly learned a lot of interesting things BUT TESTS ARE IMPOSSIBLE which ur grades depend on fully. Show him your trying, he will pull you through. Curves are s great, but again tests are impossible. Don't buy the textbook it is not necessary. Very interesting and funny lectures
Dr Dew is silly, but in the best way. He's a little thick on the poo, reproduction and "I ate it and it was delicious!" jokes, but what else is biology really? I'm surprised he hasn't moved on to a better funded school.
Dr. Dew's tests are very hard. Made up mostly of things you wouldn't expect to be tested on. If you don't go to class, you most likely will not pass. But if you go see him he will definitely be of great help to you! That's what saved me, otherwise I probably would have failed. If he sees you trying, by going to him, he'll help you.
He's very interesting, slides are easy to read and understand. Overall likeable teacher and you don't have to worry to much about his tests.
HE loves what he does. But His exams are impossible the make a true A on. He has to curve using a bell curve. So far you can have an 83 in the class and have an A. Great lectures but if you don't come to class and pay attention to the small details your grade will suffer.
The best way that I can describe Dr. Dew's class is this. He will lecture on global warming. Put pictures of insects on his PowerPoint. Then test on the structure and life cycle of Cnidarians, with random trivia questions thrown in. My advice is to attend the lectures to answer the clicker questions, and study out of the book while he talks.
The only good thing about this class is that he curves the grades. His test are still 12 random things he says in class. He doesn't leave slides up for long, and if you ask to go back he only leaves it there for less than a minute. He is a nice guy but his test are really difficult and tricky.
If you don't go to class you might as well drop the course, Iclicker points average into your grade at the end of the semester. He puts things on the test that he might have mentioned once in class. Offered a fair amount of bonus. His rainbow curve will save your grade..
Dr. Dew is a great instructor. His passion is translated in his lectures making the class interesting he also mixed in some activities. He's very understanding and there's no homework. Dr. Dew's only drawbacks are that his tests are pretty hard. Its easy to make your grade with the extra-credit and service learning hours. The final is optional!
Dr. Dew is the worse professor thats employed here at UNO. He's not very helpful/understandable, even when you try to talk to him. He is a horrible instructor. I would not recommend anyone take him. He should quit bc my opinion is that it just doesn't seem like something he should do. Don't care about his credentials and what he achieved.
I love dr dew , awesome professor! , if i could take his class again i would! the class is not hard but be ready for the tests because it can be tricky sometimes. If you want to pass his class you MUST go to class and PAY attention of what he says. His tests are based on examples he mentions in class, write notes of what he says.
Tests are really tough, but he loves what he is talking about and you can tell he is passionate about biology. I loved hearing his examples about his experiences as a graduate student. Pay attention to his examples and things that aren't on the PowerPoints. He will test on that!
This guy is the best. I often think about retaking the class just to enjoy what this man has to say. He is very knowledgable and i will say that he is the best professor and class I've ever had in college. Biodiversity with Dew is truly a learning experience of YOU want it to be. If you find this topic interesting, Dew will lay it down for you.
I totally recommend Dr. Dew! I usually do not enjoy science classes, but I loved his bio class. He is beyond passionate about what he teaches and his lectures are never boring. You will need to come to class if you want a good grade! His tests are difficult, but just study ahead of time and you should make an A/B.
Not Clear on bonus points, when he says he'll give (1) extra bonus point, he does not mean on your final grade, which i implied. It will be on your test which is worthless when everything is averaged. Had a 79 B (ten point curve) and he would not bump it up. I thought it would be okay b/c i had an extra bonus point!! I played myself. Good teacher
His lectures are great and always entertaining. Everything he says in class is covered on the tests (show up, take notes, pass), his powerpoints are all on moodle so it doesn't really matter if he goes a little fast. his class is just lectures, 4 exams and an optional final.
Mention's things once in class, and then it's on the test. And you won't find it in your book. He has good lectures, and an interesting dynamic for the class.
There is only one word to describe this class, Amazing. His lectures are very entertaining and everything on the tests are on the powerpoints he posts on moodle which makes the tests easy. He's a great professor and very understanding. Just show up to class, study the powerpoint slides well and you'll get an A.
Inspired my interest in environmental sciences and wouldn't be where I am in my education without him.
Dr. Dew loves his job and makes learning easy! Show up to class with your IClicker and study for the test. He puts things he says in the lectures on the test. Take him! He's great.
His tests are weird because he doesn't focus on the main idea. He puts random/irrelevant questions on it. However, his lectures are amazing and he has made me love Biology even more than I already do. I would take him again any day.
I passed bio 2 lab with a 96 but lecture with a C. I had A's in BIO 1 lab and lecture and anatomy and physiology 1 & 2 lab & lec. Dr Dew gives interesting lectures, he is passionate but his tests are made up of random questions he randomly pulls out of nowhere. The test questions are not on the power points, lectures, homework, or notes.
Mediocre professor. Biology should be fun! But he makes his exams so darn hard it's impossible to enjoy the class. Lots of clicker questions. Lots of random exam questions. Lots of pictures of animals. Lots of short shirts. Lots of flashing underwear because of short shirts. Lots of unhappy students. Lots of despair. Lots C's, D's, and F's.
Most enthusiastic professor ever! Great travel stories, never dull. He makes you want to save the planet. Just study the lectures well. If you do better than average youll make an A or a B. Hes very helpful in his office hours and he even gives extra credit if you do volunteer work. Great guy.
I took his online class, little did I know I was going to have to sit through hours of lectures online. His tests are ridiculously hard mostly because most of the questions are obscure trivia that was only mentioned in passing during one of the lecture videos.
Very knowledgeable and shares his personal experiences which help to make the class more interesting; esp for those who are not biology majors.
